Chapter 22: Severe Storms
"No." Whispered Ororo breathlessly as she surveyed the damaged town they journeyed to visit. Reports has said there were sightings of odd creatures nearby but this… What was once the demon village Nara. Ororo's beautiful ornate gold and white gown billowed around her legs serving as protection against the sandy grains and small pieces of debris that kicked up from the ground clouding the area creating a haze. The heat baked what was left leaving a stark stench that had her gag reflux protesting. The stench of death and rotten things carried over the brittle town.
Ororo's eyes went wide and teary to see the village that they had come to intercept had already suffered tragically much like her dreams had envisioned would happen to her home back in Egypt. Her delicate sandaled feet padded across the dry scorched earth that once showed promise of lush vegetation. In the center sat a giant crater revealing the source of the demise brought onto the people of this village. Pieces of metal and armor lay abandoned showing proof that a battle did wage there yet no victor was clearly selected. Swords and various demonic weapons were everywhere and forgotten by the wielders. The fractured stone, bone shells, pottery, and shields lay covered in dust forgotten and broken much like the entire village before her.
"I-I don't understand." She muttered with eyebrows furrowing together. "H-How? So quick too." Blue eyes surveyed the devastation littered around them. One of the villages that Sesshomaru once talked about now lay in dust at their feet. Bright green floral pastures no longer covered this side of the valley. Nara was now barren lands and dry soil with barely a story to tell. Whimsical ancient bright brown trees and twisting green foliage were gone from the surrounding forests in a perfect circular perimeter. Hard clay foundations of official buildings sat crumbled and barely standing. Her eyes took in the area as she stepped lightly further into what was a kind and prosperous demon village.
She looked onwards to see few pieces of rubble remained from the designated military outpost. Wood from shoin zukuri type houses lay broken into small dark wooden planks. A large far cry from their recent former beautiful glory. Their titled roofs and walls gone leaving nothing behind. Piles of dust swarmed the area and seared markings stretched across the village as if it had been lit by an invisible raging fire. Her fingers moved through ash blowing in the wind curiously. Seeing a small pile of it, she bent down and surveyed the sandy grey ash. With a heavy heart she stood up and she held her hands out watching the ash fall between her fingers. "This is all a mixture of flesh and bone….and everything else." She stated with a dry raspy voice gone almost hoarse from her own conclusions while staring at her sandy hands. Her eyes went to Sesshomaru for confirmation and reason. Her emotions began to boil in her chest. The skies above started to sway and bend to its mistress as the wind kicked up.
Sesshomaru looked around fighting the urge to grab Ororo and leave the area immediately. His skin prickled from the surge of colliding malicious energy in the air. Its danger and lethality burned his sensitive nose and spoke of great tragedy and death to come. His instincts pricked at his own flesh in warning and his beast growled alerting him into a state of defense. He looked around the village surveying the ruins and sensing no signs of life anywhere. Those villagers that ran through the forests must have been all that was left or lucky to have fled.
He looked towards what was the edge of the village where the trees from the valley surrounded and hid Nara protectively. The smell of humans and demons wafted over the area. Streaks across the dirt and fallen weaponry showed where the opposition moved in. He recognized signs of struggle, and a battlefield was created by opposing forces right in the center of the village. Sesshomaru stated moving forward as well into the center of the village where the energy centered. He felt the energy swirl around him as if trying to join but lacking the boost to become tangible. "A great battle between demonic energy and spiritual has taken place here." His eyes swept outwards and turned towards the side. "Monks entered through here. With something else. Those soulless creatures were here as well."
Ororo followed him while managing to hold her gold shawl and white gown close to her body while being mindful of her surroundings. A few ripped items of clothing hung onto broken sticks, and she could see dry bones of bodies lay buried under the rubble and dust around her. Ororo's body felt the evil aura of dark magic at work mingling with that of the two energies Sesshomaru spoke about towards the center where the large crater sat. She could feel an evil force sliding against her soft skin. It lingered and took delight in the aftermath of the chaos and death. "This was orchestrated by possession." Ororo muttered walking over to a small pile of rubble. She looked everywhere with scenes of her own village flashing through her mind warning of her this particular outcome. The dream of her people yelling in fright as her world crumbled around her. Two golden eyes locking into hers with outstretched claws ready to deal deathly blows. Her beautiful marble and granite buildings falling into ruin in front of her eyes. Dark demonic black entities running through her kingdom like they did this village causing chaos and death in their wake. The cries and screams of the people echoed in her ears.
Her feet deviated from the path to see stone and wood piled brokenly to the side. A cry pierced her senses. She slid her hands over her hips tentatively before lifting a large piece of wood. Ororo crouched down and immediately her hands went to work moving the pieces of debris. She quickly lifted another one with concentration; putting a crease in her delicate brows. She wasn't sure if she was searching for survivors, bodies, or items but instinct told her something important was to be found here. She kept going until she picked up on the soft sob of a child coming from the small pile beneath her. Her now dirtied fingers lifted the edge of a torn piece of wood and tossed it away. Hope filled her that maybe one was alive. A little cub maybe was alive. Maybe all was not lost and she could save at least one from this tragedy. Her fingers lifted a slab of stone, and she felt a small burst of energy from underneath it. Her heartbeat fast at the possibility and she worked quicker to move what she could until her fingers stilled after lifting more blocks of brittle wood. The wind ceased to blow as if taking in the sight with its mistress. Her stomach rolled at what she found underneath everything.
A skull to be the size of a humanoid child's skull lay separate from the body completely devoid of flesh lay sideways clearly in a position of hiding. Spiritual dust fell from the empty socket and vanished. An old protective barrier fell that wasn't strong enough to keep away the destructive forces fell before her making her quake in sadness. Ororo reached down with shaking fingers and touched the small skull gently. With care she picked it up and held it to look into the empty wide eyes that left memories of pain, fear, and grief. This child…a boy…spent his last moments in fear and crying out for help. In her ears she could hear it and feel it in her belly. She closed her eyes and hugged the skull to her body hearing the silent screams in her mind from the horrific event that had taken place. She mourned the loss of this child…the children…the mothers…the fathers…that were lost. Tears fell from her eyes and the possibility of losing a child…and losing a child in such a horrific way where he or she knew suffering and pain.
She looked around the area lost in fear before looking down at the child lost to this world with nothing but a small protective barrier formed from someone's love thrown around him for defense. This is what she wanted to avoid. What she wanted to avoid for her people. Her mind almost begged to go back and stand in the presence of those false kings than to see the painful reminder of what was on the line for her as Empress to the Great Pyramid Kingdom. Ororo thought back over the last couple of months and nearly fell to her knees. She never forgot nor did she forsake her mission. But, she had grown lax in her search and her mind went towards other things. She would admit, ideals of a possible new outcome for her own life captured her curiosity and she courted it unashamedly.
Sesshomaru watched how her touch seemed loving like a mother to an infant. Her finger ran slowly over the skull and her eyes closed. In this moment she seemed mournful and emphatic for the remains of the child giving what was left. He watched her give the grief and comfort of a mother. Her eyes opened showing unshed tears enclosing her blue eyes. Blue diamonds now raged like stormy waters. The sky grew grey and clouds moved in above them growing dark and angry. Her dress blew in the wind and for once he saw someone that looked lost and confused. He watched her lift the small skull to her lips and kissed it gently while muttering a string of apologies in his dialect and in Arabic. A droplet of water landed on his cheek and he looked to the sky to the see the clouds swirling over Ororo waiting to mourn with her.
"Why?" She whispered, while looking down at her fear turned into reality. The image shaking her to her core. This is what she had wanted to avoid. This is what she feared for her people and her ancestor's kingdom. This was devastation in such a brutal disgusting form leaving not even the children and the innocent alive to flee. Shame filled her as well that she could have been more active in the pursuit of her perpetrator and possibly have stopped this from happening. She felt like a child being chastised for her whimsical dreams and actions when she should have been out focusing on what's important; the reason why she was here.
Her eyes looked around taking in everything while trying to wrap her mind around what she knew would come to pass if she allowed this to proceed into her home. She gently held the child's skull close to her body until it burst into blue dust of spiritual energy. Her hands shook rapidly as she watched it pour through her fingers and disappear into the wind taking it away. Her hair blew wildly around her as she fought hard against her own tears. She would cry but now was not the time or place. The skies grew darker and thundered high above them now dangerously controlled by the queen's emotions. Gusts of wind swept through lifting their clothes and pushing everything away.
"Nobody wins when this happens." She whispered. "These barbarians who hide behind the cloth. Who dare take and use what is not theirs to cause pain. They will be slaughtered unmercifully." She croaked out with her hands turning into fists at her side. "They will pay for this."
Sesshomaru's skin prickled from the dangerous energy still floating in the air. He kept a tight control on his actions as he tried to suppress his instinctual nature which urged him intensely to get away from the area. Spiritual energy still lingered but it felt altered. Feral even. The scent didn't carry away. It lingered amongst the dust and the dead. This spiritual energy felt tainted somehow. And it layered the area. He wondered if the ones that performed the spiritual attack…did they sacrifice themselves to perform such deadly acts. His demonic senses did not like the high concentrated area of spiritual and reiki energy colliding in the air with demonic forces. The wind was heavy and it blew wildly around him now picking up in speed whereas the sky crackled with renewed anger and sadness.
"The energy is still active here." Sesshomaru spoke catching Ororo's attention.
His golden eyes took in her now opaque almond gaze. She stood stiffer staring at the raging sky. Her hair flew in waves around her. Her crown shined high on her head. Her gold and white dress billowed in the wind along with her beads and bangles dangling off her ankles and wrists; standing before him like an enraged goddess. He watched her look around and suddenly she closed her eyes. Her chest rose from taking in a deep breath before she opened them again revealing blue hard clear eyes. Her hair lay gently down her back and slowly the wind died down a bit. She carefully walked over to him and stood by his side still looking out at what little was left of the village.
"The energy is still moving." Ororo spoke waving her hand as if she could touch it.
"Hn."
Taking it as a need for additional information she proceeded to clarify. "I can't explain it but…." Ororo dragged subconsciously moving closer to his body to stand in his warmth and seeking the safety he protruded. "It's still alive…I don't like it. This energy…it is living." She pulled her gold shawl closer to her body for comfort. "Like it's trying to form or create something."
Sesshomaru focused on the opposing energy in the air and he confirmed her assumptions. Towards the center of the village could be felt an apex of energy colliding and clashing but too weak to do anything more. It felt dark in nature almost manipulated. Most likely the monk that sired the possessive demons was at work here, mixing their powers with the two opposing forces. He walked towards the large crater where he could feel the energy colliding yet stopping at its edge to peer down. Ororo walked alongside him and stopped looking in the center and seeing nothing. He offered her his hand. She looked to him and nodded. He suddenly grabbed her by the waist, and she naturally held onto him. Both jumped to the center where they could feel a hot burning sensation graze across their skin. They landed in the center where the release of power was strong. Both felt the strong emotions coming from the constant colliding sources of energy fighting even after the deaths of their bodies.
Anger, Hatred, Power.
It felt like two opposite forces constantly attacking the other and then trying to pull the other under. Ororo could feel the horrific intentions in the air and she said a silent prayer against the negative feelings. Voices became audible around her and filled her mind with mad thoughts. Insecurities and concerns now had a platform before her speaking to her in various tones with one speaking over the other before they all began speaking at once. Voices spoke near her ear causing her to turn her head quickly. Her wide eyes looked around hearing multiple voices but seeing nothing. This caused her heartrate to increase. She spoke quickly and murmured a protection spell but she felt as if she was being overpowered. She looked up at Sesshomaru for help. One voice mentioned his name and she quickly she shook her head in denial of its accusations. She turned away and squeezed her eyes shut. Her body felt heavy and her skin felt cold to the touch.
'He can't be trusted.'
'Look at what you allowed.'
'Allowed this infidel to distract you'
'He will do this and you know it'
'Destroy him before it's too late.'
"Kill him."
She looked again up at Sesshomaru when a voice came out loud and near split her eardrum.
"LIES"
Sesshomaru looked at the woman before him put her hands over her ears and crouch down like a child. He opened his mouth to speak when he heard a whisper in his ear.
'Betrayer'
Sesshomaru's eyes grew wide as he found himself staring at Ororo who looked upon him with shock and despair. The voice was small chanting in his mind. Old thoughts he once had now burned in his mind growing louder and louder.
'You almost gave yourself to weakness.'
'Humans did this to this village. Disgusting creatures.'
'This malicious witch will be our destruction.'
'She is the cause of everything.'
'Look at her…weak.'
'Kill her.'
'KILL HER NOW!'
His beastly nature recoiled at the outrageous thoughts and his claws extended wanting to destroy them knowing well they were insane notions not of his doing. His eyes turned into a glare as he looked into the center of the crater trying to see something that wasn't there. It spoke of disgusting things…hinted at Ororo's potential betrayal. He released a low growl in aggravation doing his best to stay focused until a pained cry that came from Ororo caught his attention. The clouds swirled quickly around revealing dark grand contours ready to unleash its wrath onto the earth.
Milliseconds later, the dark sky thundered loudly above him in a roar cry. Lightening illuminated the heavens above threatening to attack all until its mistress was free from agony. The wind blew considerably around them. He looked back to Ororo who was clearly muttering a spell with one hand outreached towards the center. Sweat was now visible on her forehead as she seemed to be locked into an invisible battle with the forces at work around them. He stepped forward when he suddenly felt the pulse of his sword react. He looked to his hip where Tensaiga was calling him to be used. He quickly pulled it from its sheath and held the hilt tightly in his grasp waiting to use his weapon. He watched as the two energies became visible clashing and colliding over and over while a black energy swirled around the two pulling it together.
"Do you see it!" Ororo yelled for him pointing before going back and muttering her spell. Her dress and hair blowing madly around her with eyes reflecting the heavens above her storming in a rage. A loud voice became overbearing, and she winced in agony.
Sesshomaru looked at Ororo crouching down and holding her ears clearly in pain as her lips moved still devoted to creating a spell. He looked to the forces where he saw her attempts fighting against the black energy pulling all of the energy together. A white light resembling that of lightening shined in the middle. The white light grew at the rise of Ororo's commanding voice. The crack in the void created from Ororo's spell called to him and guided his next steps. Its power was incredibly strong but seemed conflicted as it buoyed in size. It danced between the energies pulling and urged with static that connected to his sword encouraging him to help the Queen. Tensaiga pulsed rapidly in his hand in warning of a time constraint. He aimed the tip of his sword feeling his father's power and his own power swirl around his weapon imitating that of the beginning of Inuyasha's backlash wave. With a quick wave of his wrist he sliced through the raging energies in the center of Ororo's white lightening strike. Her white lightening swirled around his heirloom in a powerful combination of his and her power that swept the barren crater and land upon release. The black energy vanished leaving the two energies colliding only once before being destroyed. Their combined forces blew back what was left of the debris and the treetops of the forests further away blew from the force. The wind died considerably but the skies above rumbled above waiting for their mistress's command.
Ororo suddenly stiffened as silence assaulted her ears. Slowly she peeled her hand off her right ear and stood up looking around cautiously. Her eyes looked around the now quiet area until she landed on his powerful weapon that could wake the dead. She saw him put it away and a silent gasp came from her lips at his power. She felt nothing but the remnants of their own energy settling down over the earth. Her body felt light again, and she stood straight looking to Sesshomaru for confirmation. Her hands felt strange and gritty suddenly catching her attention. She quickly looked down to see black ash fall from her hands onto the rocky sandy floor. She could feel her heart pound rapidly in her ears before she closed her eyes to try to gain calm over herself.
Sesshomaru tilted his head slightly in acknowledgement that all was well. "Possession. That was a possession spell that lingered. I believe it is what was used for this village to fight against each other." Sesshomaru voiced.
She looked to Sesshomaru and spoke in a stern voice. "Dark chaotic magic is upon us." She said showing her palms to him while trying to control her breathing so as not to seem weak. Sesshomaru watched the black dust disappear off her hands as proof of her words. "Someone was definitely trying to create something tangible here using reiki and demonic energy. They wanted them in a singular collision." She clarified now looking at her dirtied black palms as they faced her. "But whoever this sorcerer is, they clearly know absolutely nothing of this dark magic because one cannot manipulate pure energy without tainting it thus ruining its substance. I think this was a test." She stated before shaking her hands and dusting them off with a grim expression. "A person of reiki energy was sacrificed to do all of this. To collide with that of a lot of demons." Her body shook still fearful of her own weakness as well as from the things muttered in her ears.
Sesshomaru put away his sword and quickly walked towards her to look down at her palms. He could sense her despair still and without hesitation he reached for her and pulled her to him. He could feel her stiffen in his hold before relaxing, allowing him to give her whatever comfort he was offering in his own way. She tapped her hands to rid themselves of the ash and black sand. When free, her hands came up and rested on his armor before moving around his neck. The sky still stayed thundering above, but it no longer held its angry temperament. The darkness lingered this time as if expecting something. The tall woman rested against him doing her best to gather herself before looking to him with stormy blue and white eyes.
"I-I would never betray you. I would fight you head on before I stab you in the back." She spoke with a strong finality not realizing her words had pierced him more than she realized. Sesshomaru said nothing but his hold tightened and understanding shown in his hard gaze upon her. A confirmation of his own thoughts and feeling reciprocated.
Ororo's lip tightened hearing the little remnants of voices still lingering in her head. "I think this is just the beginning of what is to come. There were these voices that tried to get to me. And if they had…we would have been in a deadly fight. This is the work of a spell and curse from my lands." Ororo pulled away from him reluctantly. Her mouth sat in a tight line with stormy eyes much like a devastating typhoon that swirled dangerously ready to unleash her wrath. Sesshomaru could see anger smoldering inside of her and he watched as she crouched down running her fingers in the dirt. Her mouth moved as she picked up a handful of it and brushed her lips to it gently while muttering words that sounded unlike anything he had heard her speak. No residue came to appear on her lips but instead it fell through her fingers back into the earth. He watched as the soil and ash moved and started to create bumps and hills outlines of structures. She stepped back and observed the earth manipulate into various forms shifting quickly into something he could recognize. He looked to her as she crossed her arms over her chest with eyes set in a now calm and demanding manner. Her queenly nature had returned. His gaze looked down onto the earth to see a replica of the map they had made in his study of attacked villages and potential threats. The map stabilized before she pointed at the giant size map and spoke.
"Where are we exactly?" She asked unfamiliar with the location of the village they were in.
Sesshomaru pointed in a spot further away from the village they thought was the next one to be targeted. His sword dragged through the dirt creating circular shapes in the earth. He labeled them with the kanji for villages that were attacked. Nara sat on the other end of the map in the Southern Lord's lands ironically. Ororo's eyes grew big to see the shape of the attacks laid before them. "This sorcerer has attacked a village in a circle formation around your country." She stated motioning with her finger.
Sesshomaru walked around the map before stepping in it. He quickly took out Tensaiga and used the tip of his sword to draw more lines in the dirt. She watched curiously to see what he was doing; waiting patiently for him to finish and enlighten her. He wrote kanji in the four corners and then wrote other things before he stopped. Ororo recognized the words and nodded her head. He stepped back using the tip of his sword to point at his lines.
"These are the borders of the Cardinal Lords lands. This attack happened on Lord Tanako's lands. The one that cowardly called you to aid him in his pursuit of eradicating the humans."
Frustration filled her knowing the Southern Lord will use this attack on his lands to push for the agenda he wanted and fuel the war with humans. But there was nothing they could do for now against him. "This dark sorcerer or monk has manipulated attacks on everyone's territory but yours...well technically Inuyasha's village got attacked which count as yours." She pointed at the spot with Inuyasha's name written. "And all of this in the middle hasn't been touched as of yet." She stated motioning towards the center as well as towards his capital. "I believe this monk wants all of you to go to war since he has gotten all of you to point fingers at each other. And this could cause the other kings of your lands to focus their energies on you should they go against our word and start a war. It would make sense to have my enemies fight and kill each other. It is the smart move." She stated pulling off her heavy gold headdress and running her fingers through her heavy thick cloud like hair roughly shaking it of the sand and ash.
Ororo walked around the map before looking around the area at the destruction. "We should have felt this massive amount of power but his spell was pulling the energy together clearly trying to form something and not gain outside attention. But what is there to gain from making those of spiritual nature attack those of demonic energies? And why in this circular motion?" She asked drawing more questions than answers. "It is forming a giant circle. With small crater circles within the villages attacked. All the energy flowing in the center. And colliding."
Sesshomaru looked at the map again and felt an omen in the air. He looked to see in the middle sat Inuyasha's village and something disturbed him about his brother and the miko being among the chaos. He was sure that if Inuyasha's village sat in the center had received attacks, then most likely so did the other villages in the middle did as well. Most likely his brother and his pack were busy saving everyone in the area as the contents of his letter spoke about the increased attacks. However, the miko's barriers kept them all safe and were working efficiently in keeping the village safe from harm. But how long would this last until their opponent found a way to get by her spiritual barrier. And why was his brother and the miko's village in the center anyway.
Ororo was thinking along the same silent lines as he was. "Your brother and his mate need to come home." She stated bluntly. "They are not safe. The village needs to flee."
"They are home." He countered stoically.
Ororo shook her head. "I do not know the full nature of you and your brother's odd relationship, but your castle is too his home and he should return to it." She stated. "He, his friends, his wife, and his people are not safe. The tainted creatures maybe now the least of their worries or an omen for what is to come." She stated pointing to Matsue where no doubt the Southern Lord was beginning the calls of war after hearing the first-hand accounts of the Nara villagers. "They reside in a mixed village on a separate territory away from your immediate reach. I'm sure that cowardly King will target them eventually for being what they are. Not full blooded in his eyes and human." She spoke seeing far beyond her sight.
Sesshomaru cut his eyes at her. "My brother and his mate have a fanatical duty to those mixed villages in the area. They will risk their lives to protect them all. They won't leave without a fight. And my castle will not hold them."
Ororo could feel the beginnings of a headache forming understanding what he was saying. This was proof even more to her however that Inuyasha was indeed a king in his own right. She looked at the map at the territories, villages, and towns that bordered on the four cardinal lord's lands colliding in the middle. Truthfully, Inuyasha did have his own little kingdom as these demons and humans all came to him for help. She truly did not want anything to happen to her new friends especially the miko she recognized from her premonition. Maybe if she spoke to her, they could work something out. A plan. A planning of the minds. The miko had to listen to reason that they were not safe completely. Maybe, having everyone in one location would put her mind at ease so that she could hunt down the bastard that did this and destroy him. Her eyes looked to Sesshomaru feeling sadness creep into her bones.
Also…there was Sesshomaru her relationship now to consider. She would need to distance herself from him this was for sure. She could not allow any more room for mistakes and opportunities for the innocent to get hurt. Ororo knew it would hurt for a bit as she had grown rather attached to the Inu King. But, she needed to save him. Possession proved it could happen. It could happen to anyone. She had heard the vile words whispered into her ears. She felt the negative power shift onto him as well trying to fill his head with lies. Her spell worked to guide him and protect him from the pain she felt during that attack. In the process of her agony, she had seen what her cowardly enemy could do and she could not allow this brilliant good youkai king to suffer. She had to do what was needed…by any means necessary.
