Revised Author's Note:
Dear readers, I have done it again! Many thanks to those who mentioned they missed reading Elizabeth meeting Zachary. It was written, but I had mislabeled 2 chapters in my writing program, both as 93, therefore this first part one is the missing section. Rather than reconfigure multiple chapters, I am just adding this new part one to the beginning of the original chapter 93 which is now part two!
Can I blame it on the internet being down in the midst of working on this grouping of chapters? Haha! It's either that or one stressed author... Thanks for reading this part one to catch the missing storyline.
(Please note for those who read this story translated, there are multiple languages in this and the following chapter and I don't know how different languages will translate. I hope you will get the full story!)
Hanukah and Christmas Blessings to you all! Eilie

Chapter Ninety-three - Part One
.
At The Concert
.
Zachary was waiting at the Depot entrance and hurried to the Grant's vehicle as soon as Nathan turned in to the parking lot. A quick glance inside showed Zachary that the front seat had been saved for him, so he entered and turned towards the ladies in the back seat. "Good evening, everyone! Are we ready for some beautiful music?"
"We are. Let me make some introductions?" Nathan turned in his seat. "Grace? Please meet my brother, Zachary Archer Grant. Zach, meet Mrs. William Thatcher."
"It's an honor to meet you, Ma'am." Zach reached his hand out to the older woman. Then as Nathan made the next introduction, Zach took in this beautiful woman with sapphire eyes and rosy lips that formed a perfect cupid's bow.
"Elizabeth? Please let me introduce someone very special to me? This is my brother Zachary, who prefers to have us use his nickname, Zach. Zach, please meet Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton, the woman I am now courting!"
Zachary moved his hand to shake Elizabeth's and froze. "Did you say courting?" He addressed his question to Nathan, but held her gaze as she held his. Elizabeth nodded as Nathan responded. "I did. As of last night, Elizabeth and I are courting! Isn't this grand?"
"Oh! It is fantastic news and it is lovely to meet you. May I call you Elizabeth?" He reluctantly broke his gaze and let go of her hand.
Elizabeth, finally recovering from the shock of seeing Nathan's lookalike brother, nodded. "You may, Zach, and it is wonderful to meet you as well. Please excuse me staring at you. Your brotherly resemblance is remarkable."
"I know!" Zach laughed as he reached to pat Allie's knee. "You all have to look at two of us! How are you Allie-girl? Ready for your debut performance?"
"Hi, Uncle Zach. I hope so. I think we have practiced so much that we can sing all the words in our sleep!" Allie grinned, placing her hand over her uncle's. "I'm so glad you can join us…even though I won't be seated with you, I will look for you in the crowd. At least I hope I'll see you!"
"Maybe I'll be the one who begins a standing ovation! Then you'll find us!" Zach turned towards Nathan. "Oh, and good evening, brother! Wait." Zach leaned forward. "Are you wearing formal wear? I didn't know! Do you think I am dressed okay? I wore my navy suit, so maybe I can somewhat blend in?"
"Hey, Zach! Do not worry about it. I only discovered this afternoon that a few men I know are wearing tuxedos. You'll be fine and if people see us together, and with my lovely Elizabeth and Grace, they won't notice what either one of us is wearing!" Nathan chuckled.
"Probably true! But, remember this is our big debut, Nathan!" Zach pointed out, laughing. "The Grant brothers!"
"You are right!" Nathan chuckled. "We'll keep the ladies on our arms so we have a chance to change the subject if quizzed!"
"Here we are! It is good to be this early as we have a great parking spot! Ladies, please wait for Zach and me to assist you?" Nathan engaged the brake and the men exited the vehicle, going to the rear doors. Elizabeth was on Nathan's side and Allie was in the middle, so Nathan had a lady on each arm. Grace gladly accepted Zach as her escort and the family turned to admire what was known as the "Gingerbread City Hall!"
"The name fits, doesn't it? The turrets and windows surrounds do look like an elegant Christmas gingerbread creation! This style is Romanesque Revival isn't it?" Elizabeth asked anyone listening.
"I believe it is. Wes said something about the style and the name when I informed him that this was the location of the concert." Nathan looked down at Allie. "Are you ready, Honey? Do you want to hug everyone out here or inside?"
"It's cold, so let's go inside, please?" Allie requested. "I'm shivering."
"Then let's get you ladies inside." Nathan questioned. "Maybe we will just admire the interior and find our seats early, okay Elizabeth? Grace?"
"It will be more exciting to be inside and feel the energy, Nathan." Grace admitted. "I vote for inside as well."
"Okay with you, Lisbeth?"
Looking up at Nathan adoringly, Elizabeth responded. "Wherever you are is okay with me, Nathan."
Smiling at her, Nathan pressed his Elizabeth's hand closer to his side and they climbed the steps to the tower entrance.
Inside, Allie allowed Nathan to take her coat then hugged everyone, accepting their advice to forget all the people in the Hall and enjoy singing.
Nathan excused himself. "Zach would you accompany Elizabeth as well? I want to be sure that Allie finds the right room and is situated."
"Of course. It's my honor." He took Elizabeth on his other arm and asked. "So, are you enjoying this fair city? Have you toured around some?"
"Zachary? I'm sorry, but not only do you look like Nathan, but you have similar voices!" Elizabeth offered. "It is taking me some time to get used to all this! I confess I was listening to your voice and not your words! I apologize."
"Not a problem, Elizabeth. I was asking if you have toured Regina?"
Still staring at this handsome young man beside her, Elizabeth nodded. "Ah, yes. A little. I confess my focus has been on Nathan and Allie more than the city, but we've been driven around a little and Mother and I went shopping downtown with Carol the other day."
"Oh? You know Carol Collins?" Zach questioned.
Grace answered as Elizabeth still appeared dazed. "We do. We met them many years ago when Peter was briefly stationed in Hamilton. It has been lovely to meet again though and we are staying with them too!"
"Aren't they lovely people? I've shared dinner with them and love to see how they love Nathan and Allie. They've included me in their extended family as well, so I feel as though they are my grandparents! Of course, that is only when not at Depot!" Zach explained.
"You have probably seen more of Regina than I have, but I hope to look around more before my first assignment begins after graduation." Zach chuckled, looking from one lovely lady to the other. "They keep us new recruits busy!"
Charmed, Elizabeth responded. "A Mountie's responsibilities are so extensive I am amazed your training isn't longer than six-plus months! You finish in February, right?"
Nodding, Zach agreed. "I do and a part of me can't wait. Sometimes though, it's just hard not knowing my next assignment."
Zach looked down at Elizabeth admiringly before continuing. "Elizabeth, Nathan has made a lovely choice in who he is courting. Congratulations again! And, although prejudiced and knowing I don't know my brother as well as you do, I think you have a wonderful man in your life now too."
Elizabeth blushed, responding. "Thank you, Zach, and I agree about Nathan. He is a noble, honorable and precious man. You'll be blessed as you get to know him."
"I am already blessed, Elizabeth. Nathan, Allie, Dad and Mom Grant, the Collins's, Bill… and now you and Mrs. Thatcher. Suddenly, I am no longer alone and I am very grateful." Zach gulped down his emotions before adding. "I am truly impressed with Nathan, as are the men in my troop. Actually maybe everyone in the entire Academy is impressed? Has he told you about the funeral exercise he led?"
.
Having joined Allie with her classmates and some fellas from the Boy's Academy, Nathan hugged his daughter and whispered in her ear, "You are beautiful, have a lovely voice and will charm everyone tonight." Backing away, he added, "I am very proud of you, Allie-girl!"
Sally giggled. "Uncle Nathan, you are calling her Allie-girl again. Tonight she looks like a lady, not a girl!"
"She does, but you'll find your father is the same. You daughters will always be our 'girls' no matter your age." Nathan winked at Sally. "You all look stunning tonight, ladies. I'll say farewell for now and pray you'll have a wonderful and memorable time. You probably have news to chat about right?" Nathan winked at Allie, knowing she was dying to share about her father and teacher's courtship.
Nodding, Allie turned to Sally, Rachel, Katie and Naomi, "Guess what?! Dad is courting Mrs. Thornton! I can't wait for you to meet her afterwards, or tomorrow if it's too crowded tonight. But, isn't that exciting?"
Squeals drew the attention of a few others and Ellie Blake and her brother Jared made their way to join the group. "What's so exciting?"
"Allie's Dad is courting her old teacher!" Naomi giggled. "Well, not old but the teacher she had before she moved here! Isn't that exciting?"
"Oh Allie! That is wonderful!" Ellie exclaimed.
"Hello, Allie." Jared spoke shyly. "Are you happy about this news?"
"I am ecstatic! I've been hoping and praying for this for a very long time." Allie responded.
"Then I am happy for you, Allie. Mrs. Thornton seems like a lovely lady." Jared blushed slightly but forged ahead. "You look lovely tonight, Allie."
Blushing in response, Allie thanked Jared and suddenly the girls were oo-ing and ah-ing about their outfits. Jared quietly moved away, but not before winking at Allie and whispering, "You'll be great, Allie."
.
Meeting Elizabeth, Grace and Zach in the large entrance all, Nathan sidled-up to Elizabeth and took her arm. "Thanks, Zach for taking care of our ladies. What did I miss?"
"We've been admiring the architecture while getting to know your brother a little bit. He was telling us about the funeral exercises and how you are admired." Elizabeth squeezed Nathan's arm.
"Ahem… I am glad I missed that conversation." Nathan chuckled. "Do you know where to check our coats? We kept them with us last week."
Zach nodded to the Coat Check Room and they all headed in that direction.
"Oh, Elizabeth. You take my breath away in that dress, you look so stunning. Eye-catching. Mesmerizing. Gorgeous… I could go on, but seriously, that dress is incredible. Please turn around?" Nathan admired her figure, the color that pinked her cheeks and the sparkle in her eyes. "Of course, the woman wearing that dress is beautiful and to be with her is far beyond what I could have ever imagined!"
Having turned a slow circle, Elizabeth blushed, smiled, took Nathan's arm again and inclined her head towards her mother.
"And, Grace! You look stunning as well. Navy blue or midnight blue or indigo, whichever one that is? It is one of my favorite colors. Actually all blues are my favorites! But you are very elegant tonight and I am sure William wishes he was here with you. Please mention that we took good care of you, okay?" Nathan winked at Grace, earning himself some addition points in his favor!
"It is my privilege to accompany you, Mrs. Thatcher." Zach confessed nervously. "I just hope I don't embarrass you in my suit."
Grace stopped and turned to Zach. "Zachary Grant. You are not an embarrassment in any way. I am proud to be on the arm of such a handsome and gentlemanly young man. Your mother raised you well."
Blushing, Zach admitted. "She tried!"
"She succeeded." Grace squeezed Zach's arm and they began to walk slowly again. "Shall we stand over by the wall and people-watch a little before we find our seats?"
.
"Hoping that some people he knew would come greet them, Nathan was happy to oblige.
"Sergeant!"
Following the voice, Nathan saw an older man approach and in the nick of time remembered the man was Allie's math teacher. "Well hello, Sir. How are you this evening?"
"I am well, thank you. And you?"
"Also well, thank you, but I apologize. Though I know you are Allie's math teacher we only met that one time. Remind me of your name, please?"
"Oh, of course. I confess I don't recall your first name as to me you are Allie Grant's father! I do recall you are a Sergeant though! I am Mr. Kelley. Ian Kelley."
"Of course, Mr. Kelley." Nathan whispered. "I am actually only a Staff Sergeant Major, Sir, but tonight I am Allie's father. Mr. Kelley, please let me introduce Elizabeth Thornton, the lady I am courting and Allie's former teacher in the Hope Valley School. Elizabeth? Mr. Ian Kelley."
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kelley. I am so thrilled that Allie is getting the opportunities to advance here at St. Anne's. I started her in an advanced math course in which she excelled, but she was alone as no other student shared her aptitude for the subject! I am so happy she has others with whom to share her class. I probably don't need to ask, but is she doing well, Mr. Kelley?"
"Miss Allie is an excellent student and a personable young lady as well. And, to be direct, she is progressing faster than the others in the advanced class! You trained her well, Miss Thornton."
"It's actually Mrs. Thornton, Mr. Kelley. My husband was a Mountie and died some years ago. I am happy to hear that Allie is advancing, I just hope you can keep her engaged?"
"Excuse me. My condolences, Ma'am. I believe she enjoys the challenge, so before I move her beyond the other students, I assign Miss Allie more of the same types of problems to solve. She is thriving, so don't worry." Mr. Kelley chuckled. "Somehow I think that she would be forthright and let me know if she was bored!"
Turning back to Nathan, he excused himself. "I am sure you have others to meet tonight, but Sergeant, you can be proud of your daughter. Miss Allie is a joy to teach."
"Thank you, Mr. Kelley. I am glad to hear that. Enjoy the concert tonight!"
.
"Oh, Elizabeth, come with me for a moment?" Nathan nodded to Zach and Grace who were deep in conversation about something! "Be right back."
Together Nathan and Elizabeth approached the pastor of Knox. "Ellwood? May I introduce the woman who I am courting? Ellwood, please meet Mrs. Elizabeth Thornton? Elizabeth, this is our pastor at Knox Presbyterian, the Reverend Ellwood Huntley."
"A pleasure, Mrs. Thornton. Please use my given name since you are so close to Nathan? Are you visiting or do you attend another church here in Regina?"
"I am Elizabeth to all of Nathan's friends!" Elizabeth laughed. "Although originally from Hamilton, I moved to become a schoolteacher in Hope Valley, the town where Nathan served as a Constable before moving here to Regina. I am visiting for ten days, will return home for my little boy's birthday and come back here as soon as we can manage it! Nathan and I are newly courting, so I hate the idea of being apart from him!" She looked adoringly at Nathan.
"Well, I can understand that! Will you attend this Sunday? Nathan will be reading another of his Advent poems in the service."
"Oh? You didn't tell me that, Nathan! Did you mean to surprise me?"
"Ellwood just asked me this afternoon, so with everything going on I didn't think to tell you!" Nathan chuckled. "We have had some extraordinary days! Don't worry, Ellwood, I will be prepared by Sunday!" Nathan looked to the side. "Oh! Is this your wife?"
The pastor's wife threaded her hand through his arm as the pastor spoke. "Yes! Darling? Please meet Staff Sergeant Major Nathan Grant and his lady friend, Mrs. Thornton? He is the author of the poetry volume we have been reading. Nathan and Elizabeth. My wife, Dorothy."
After exchanging greetings and compliments about Nathan's writings, Nathan and Elizabeth excused themselves to get back to Grace and Zach. As they approached they found Jon and Jane Samuels, Ardis Ross and the Collins's chatting with them.
"Good evening, friends! Isn't this an exciting evening?" Nathan asked.
"It is indeed! Hello again, Elizabeth! Have you met Ardis Ross yet?" Jon spoke up.
Ardis and Elizabeth grinned. "Oh yes, we have met! I toured St. Anne's and saw Allie's creations in the Art Department. Lovely to see you again, Ardis! You look lovely tonight." Elizabeth said warmly hoping to offer friendship.
"Thank you, Elizabeth. You look beautiful!" Ardis returned the compliment. "I can't wait to hear Allie sing tonight. She was full of nervous anticipation today! Well, most of the girls were. This concert is a big event for them!"
Nathan glanced back as he felt a nudge on his arm. "Wes! Good evening! How are you, my friend?"
"Missing my office-mate all day today!" Wes eyed Nathan and took note of a smile that Nathan couldn't hide. "What is it?"
"Elizabeth and I are courting!" Nathan's eyes sparkled and he turned to glance at Elizabeth.
"Well! I'll be! That is news to celebrate!" At that moment, Wes saw Elizabeth, her mother, Carol Collins, Jane and a beautiful woman who he had never seen before. Under his breath, Wes let out an appreciative whispered whistle. "Well! We have some beautiful ladies in this group tonight. You all look stunning. Mrs. Collins, we've met, Elizabeth too, but I haven't met you ladies."
"Sergeant Doctor Wesley Murphy, please let me introduce, Mrs. Grace Thatcher, Elizabeth's mother? My brother, Zachary Grant and this is Miss Ardis Ross, Allie's art teacher at St. Anne's and a fellow choir-member at Knox." Nathan completed the introductions. "Zach? Ladies? Please meet my office-mate and friend, Wes Murphy. He is not a fan of formal titles, so we get along handsomely!"
"Zach! You sure are Nathan's brother. Unmistakably!" He clapped Zach on the back. "So glad you could get the time off to come." Shifting his position, Wes spoke again. "Now, it is lovely to meet Nathan's lady's mother, Mrs. Thatcher. Welcome to Regina!" He shook her hand, then turning to Ardis, offered his hand to her as he spoke. "Miss Ross. It is an honor to meet you. I am hoping to attend Knox on Sunday and maybe I will see you there?"
"Delighted, Sir. I will be there!" Ardis blushed pink and Wes Murphy noticed, charmed.
"Do you have your seats yet, folks?" Wes asked, but kept returning his gaze to this beautiful blonde with the twinkling blue-grey eyes.
"No, but we should probably make our way inside now. Peter, Carol, will you lead the way?" Nathan requested.
As they began to move together, Wes held back and crossed behind the group to walk near Ardis. "Are you with someone this evening, Miss Ross, or can I request to sit beside you?"
"No, I am not with anyone in particular, Sir." She looked at Nathan briefly as if asking permission. Having glanced back, Nathan's encouraging grin and nod told Ardis this was a good thing, so she looked back at Wes and took his offered arm. "You are welcome to sit with me. Thank you!"
"Please use my given name? Wes? As Nathan mentioned I don't stand on Mountie protocol except when at Depot." Wes chuckled thinking this night was already wonderful and the music hadn't even begun!
Elizabeth caught Nathan's eye and they exchanged a knowing and happy look. Love was in the air!
.
The group filled three rows, with Zach on the aisle, then Elizabeth, Nathan, Grace, Ardis and Wes. In the row ahead of them were the Samuels's and Collins's, soon joined by Claire and Dan. Josiah Blake and his wife, Johanna, slipped into the seats behind Nathan and Grace, followed by Isaac and Esther West.
Isaac patted Nathan's shoulder. "Hello, there, Brother. Don't you look smashing tonight! Care to introduce us to your lovely ladies?" Isaac smiled innocently, but with intent.
"Of course! Good evening, Esther, Isaac!" Nathan adjusted his seat and released Elizabeth's hand from his arm, while quickly grabbing it in his hand. "My friends, let me introduce you to Elizabeth Thornton, the woman I am now courting!" Nathan couldn't keep the joy from his voice. "Elizabeth? Station Sergeant Isaac Best and his wife, Esther! They are on loan from Barbados for a year and their daughter, Naomi, is a dear friend of Allie's."
"Oh! Barbados? How exotic! I have taught my students about the various countries and islands in the Caribbean, but confess I have never met anyone from Barbados. Lovely to meet you and what a treat for Allie to have a cross-cultural experience by getting to know your daughter." Elizabeth shook Isaac's offered hand, then Esther's.
"Teach? Are you from St. Anne's?" Esther inquired, hearing the comment about her students.
Laughing, Elizabeth explained. "Nathan usually introduces me as Allie's former teacher from Hope Valley. As our courtship is very new, I think he chose to only mention that connection! Right, Nathan?"
"Well, yeah… It is now the more important one!" Nathan and Elizabeth shared a look of love.
"Oh? Well! Congratulations to you both! How recent is this courtship?"
"Last night!" Nathan chuckled as he and Elizabeth blushed slightly. "So, very recent!"
"How wonderful, Nathan. I assume Allie knows and may be sharing the news amongst her friends? Naomi didn't mention anything yet."
Elizabeth explained. "Allie was sworn to secrecy today until we could inform our parents and siblings. Oh, Nathan! I forgot to tell you that I talked to Julie today. She intends to catch a train west as soon as possible to meet you and Allie!"
"Oh? Okay then! We'll have to discuss timing and accommodation for her." He looked apologetically at the Bests. "As you can see we are just getting to know each other's families! Oh, let me introduce Elizabeth's mother." Nathan shifted again, to include Grace. "Grace? I would like you to meet friends of mine and Allie's, the Bests." Nathan introduced them with their proper titles and mentioned Naomi was Allie's friend and they hailed from Barbados.
"Delighted to meet you both. You wouldn't happen to know Margaret Marshall? I think she was from Bridgetown. Her husband was an attorney and was in Hamilton for an international trade case. We got to know each other quite well volunteering for the Children's Hospital." Grace shook Esther's hand.
"I'm afraid I don't know the name, Mrs. Thatcher." Esther smiled warmly. "Still, it is always worth asking!"
Extending his hand to shake that of Josiah, Nathan included the Blake's in the introductions, mentioning that Elizabeth and he were courting.
"Nathan, Brother! Congratulations!" Josiah exclaimed. "Well, congratulations to you as well, Elizabeth! Nathan here is a catch as I am sure you are aware."
"Welcome to the Mountie family, Elizabeth!" Johanna smiled warmly. "You will find an ever-enlarging family here in Regina. I look forward to getting to know you, maybe even this weekend? Will you be joining the caroling tomorrow night?"
"I will and, although I don't want to wish away one moment with Nathan and Allie, I am looking forward to that special event." Elizabeth looked at Nathan with an adoration that was not unnoticed by their surrounding friends. Suddenly realizing she had her back to Zachary, Elizabeth shifted and took Zach's hand. "Have you met Nathan's brother, Zachary Grant? He's a Cadet at Depot. Zachary? Mr. and Mrs. Blake."
"How do you do? Pleased to meet you." Zach spoke immediately as it took a moment for each of the Blake's to recover their voices. Making it easier for them, Zach added, laughing. "I know there is no mistaking we are related!"
"Related? You could be twins!" Josiah exclaimed, shocked.
"We didn't know, but welcome to our Mountie family as well, Zach. Lovely to meet you." Johanna graciously offered. "You'll have to meet our son, Jared, sometime. He has another year at the Boy's Academy so his future is uncertain, but his father's desire is for him to follow his footsteps to become a Mountie. Jared is very hesitant so maybe you can chat with him someday? You are closer in age I'm guessing?"
"Yes, Ma'am. I am twenty-one. Maybe we can? I graduate in February so will have more unscheduled time after that, although I don't know where I will be stationed as yet."
"Of course. Well, if you find yourself at the Bookstore downtown on a Saturday, look for a tall, blue-eyed blonde. Jared works there, usually at the cash register." Johanna Blake added.
Nathan spoke up, "I think they are almost ready to begin, Honey." As Elizabeth turned back towards Nathan her eye caught Claire Collins watching her.
Quickly standing, Elizabeth stepped in front of Nathan, avoiding the roses tucked under the seat in front of him. "Just a moment, Nathan!" She stepped close enough to reach Claire's shoulder and, her face beaming, whispered. "We are courting!"
Claire's face broke into a wide grin. "Oh!" She whispered, rejoicing. "How wonderful. We'll talk soon!" Having read Elizabeth's journals, Claire was the only one, besides Nathan, who knew the history of this couple finally coming together. "I am thrilled for you both." Claire reached back to pat Elizabeth's hand and they exchanged a knowing and happy gaze!
Quickly returning to her seat just in time, Elizabeth settled next to Nathan and took his arm. With sparkling eyes she tilted her head. As Nathan bent his ear towards her, Elizabeth whispered happily. "The news is out!"
Nathan winked, giving his crooked smile and opened his program guide. Folding it open, he then placed his hand over Elizabeth's as the lights dimmed.

Chapter Ninety-Three – Part Two
.
"A Celebration in Song from Beyond our Borders"
.
A distinguished older man walked onstage towards the grand piano, positioned stage right in front of the closed curtain. He lit one candle of a brass Menorah and sat at the piano to play an arpeggio. Melodic and beautiful Hebrew words began to swell from the rear of the auditorium. Slowly the choirs from St. Anne's Academy for Girls and The Boy's Academy of Regina began to enter and, two-by-two, slowly proceeded down the center and two side aisles. Their a cappella voices blended beautifully with the young men sounding a low droning tone while the others sang the ancient Hebrew melody of 'Maoz Tzur (Rock of Ages).'
'Maoz tzur y'shuati l'cha naeh l'shabeach
Tikon beit t'filati v'sham todah n'zabeach.
L'eit tachin matbeach mitzar hamnabeach
Az egmor b'shir mizmor chanukat hamizbeach
Az egmor b'shir mizmor chanukat hamizbeach.' (*33)
Gradually the heavy velvet curtains opened as the singing choirs climbed the steps to assemble on the risers. Once on stage, they sang a verse of "Maoz Truz, Rock of Ages," in English.
'Rock of Ages, let our song Praise Thy saving power;
Thou, amidst the raging foes, Wast our sheltering tower.
Furious they assailed us, But Thine arm availed us,
And Thy Word Broke their sword
When our own strength failed us.' (*33)
Searching quickly, Nathan found Allie, her eyes searching the audience. He slyly pointed her out to Elizabeth and that motion was enough for Allie to notice him and the family gathered. Her face lit up and she smiled widely.
Stage right in the second row, Allie stood as the second girl from the outside. This would allow her to quietly move to the outer edge and make her way to the center front for her solo.
For now though, Rachel Bell took the center position, standing with her back to the choir and her music stand. She lifted her hands to quiet the audience as the pianist moved to join her.
As Rachel spoke, Nathan noted the acoustics were marvelous and she was easily heard. "On behalf of St. Anne's Academy for Girls, and…" Rachel nodded at the gentleman standing beside her.
"And on behalf of The Boy's Academy of Regina, we welcome, you, Ladies and Gentlemen, Parents, Teachers, Students and their families. I am Dr. Samuel York, instructor of music at the Boy's Academy and choirmaster at St. Stephen's Anglican Church." He half turned to Rachel who began to speak again.
"I am Rachel Bell, the music instructor at St. Anne's and music director at Knox Presbyterian Church. I welcome you as well and thank you for attending in support of our students and the Academies."
"We have begun our concert tonight with an ancient Hebrew hymn traditionally sung at The Festival of Lights, also known as Hanukah. This year the eight-day Hanukah celebration begins on Sunday, December fifth, with the lighting of the first candle on the Menorah." Rachel motioned to the lit candle on the candelabra near the piano. "Hanukah celebrates the rededication of the Jewish Temple when a jar of oil that was only enough to light the lamps for one day, miraculously lit the Temple lamps for eight days. Nowadays, Jewish families gather around their Menorah to light another candle each night, and to pray, sing and remember a miracle."
Dr. York continued the introductory remarks. "This evening we have prepared a celebration of another miracle, the Birth of the Christ Child as foretold in prophesies from long ago. We are proud of all that our choirs have accomplished these past few months. Please follow the program as you will note our offerings this year are both international and multi-lingual. Interspersed you will hear some instrumental offerings from talented musicians at both of the Academies, so we hope you enjoy, 'A Celebration in Song from Beyond our Borders.'"
Dr. York nodded then made his way to the grand piano.
Rachel added, "Thank you."
Turning to the choirs, she smiled to encourage the students to smile as well. Once Dr. Work played the piano introduction, Rachel lifted her arms and the girls opened the concert singing multiple parts while the boys hummed a low harmony. The audience knew they were in for a special evening when the young people beautifully presented the American carol, "There's a Song in the Air."
"There's a song in the air! There's a star in the sky!
There's a mother's deep prayer and a baby's low cry!
And the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing,
For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!
There's a tumult of joy o'er the wonderful birth,
For the virgin's sweet Boy is the Lord of the earth.
Ay! The star rains its fire while the beautiful sing,
For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!
In the light of that star lie the ages impearled;
And that song from afar has swept over the world.
Every hearth is aflame, and the beautiful sing
In the homes of the nations that Jesus is King!
We rejoice in the light, and we echo the song
That comes down through the night from the heavenly throng.
Ay! We shout to the lovely evangel they bring,
And we greet in His cradle our Savior and King!" (*34)
As the applause died down, Nathan pointed to the next piece in the program, whispering into Elizabeth's ear. "My favorite Christmas carol!"
Elizabeth nodded and smiled, squeezing his arm and determined to listen carefully as Dr. York directed from the piano and the choir sang a traditional English carol, "Of the Father's Love Begotten." (*35)
Nathan glanced back at the Blakes and smiled as their son and daughter, Jared and Ellen, made their way to center stage. In front of the piano stood a young lady with a violin while seated with her were two young men with their guitars. A musical treat ensued!
Jared sang at first and then was joined by Ellen with a most unusual and difficult harmony to "Brightest and Best." You could hear a pin drop in between verses, the piece was so captivating.
"Hail blessed morn, see the great Mediator down from the regions of glory descend.
Shepherds go worship the babe in a manger. Lo! For a guard the bright angels attend.
Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion, fragrance of Edom and off'rings divine?
Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?
Brightest and best of sons of the morning dawn on our darkness and lend us Thine aid.
Star in the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer was laid.
Vainly we offer each ample oblation. Vainly with gifts would His favor secure.
Richer by far is the heart's adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.
Brightest and best of sons of the morning dawn on our darkness and lend us Thine aid.
Star in the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer was laid
Cold on His cradle the dewdrops were shining. Low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall.
Angels adore Him, in slumbers reclining. Wise men and shepherds before Him do fall.
Brightest and best of sons of the morning dawn on our darkness and lend us Thine aid.
Star in the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer was laid.
Guide where our infant Redeemer was laid." (*36)
The Hall was silent for some moments when the last note died out, then erupted into tremendous applause as the brother and sister and instrumentalists bowed. Nathan, Josiah and Johanna were among the first to stand and most of the audience was soon on their feet, clapping enthusiastically. Not allowing the program to continue without another bow, Rachel waved the singers and musicians back on stage to accept the audience's appreciation.
Before being seated, Nathan reached his hand behind Elizabeth and Zachary, grinning and squeezing the hands of teary-eyed and proud parents, Johanna and Josiah Blake.
Once the audience resettled in their seats, the choirs shared a rendition of the traditional American Spiritual, "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow."
"There's a star in the East on Christmas morn Rise up shepherds and follow.
It'll show you the place where the child is born. Rise up shepherds and follow.
Leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up shepherds and follow.
Leave your ewes and leave your rams. Rise up shepherds and follow.
[Chorus]
Follow, follow, rise up shepherd and follow. Follow the star of Bethlehem
Rise up shepherd and follow.
If you take good heed to the angel's words, Rise up shepherds and follow.
You'll Forget your flocks, you'll forget your herds, Rise up shepherds and follow." [Chorus] (*37)
Taking the audience further south to the Caribbean islands, the choir then presented a West Indian traditional carol, "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy." Sung a cappella, one of the young men kept time with the Cabasa (*38), a hand-held percussion instrument with a gentle sound, while two others played steel drums, rarely heard in western Canada. The effect was magical and the simple word repetitions assured that the audience would go home with this song on their hearts!
"The Virgin Mary had a baby boy. The Virgin Mary had a baby boy.
The Virgin Mary had a baby boy and they said that his name was Jesus.
He come from the glory, He come down. He come from the glorious kingdom.
He come from the glory, He come down. He come from the glorious kingdom.
Oh yes, believer. Oh yes, believer.
He come from the glory, He come down.He come from the glorious kingdom.
The angels sang when the baby was born and they said that his name was Jesus.
The angels sang when the baby was born and they said that his name was Jesus.
The shepherds saw him. He was lying in a manger.
The shepherds saw him. He was lying in a manger.
The wise men saw where the baby was born and they said that his name was Jesus.
The wise men saw where the baby was born and they said that his name was Jesus." (*39)
Joining the Casaba and steel drum players on stage was a young man with a small drum and two others with guitars. Together as a quintet they played an embellished instrumental version of "Go Tell it on the Mountain" to everyone's delight. (*40)
A French carol followed with the French language majors singing in French, accompanied by hummed harmonies. Both choirs then joined together, singing an English version of "Il est Né le Divin Enfant?"
[Chorus]
[Chorus]
English translation
[Chorus]
"He is born, the Heav'nly Child, Oboes play; set bagpipes sounding.
He is born, the Heav'nly Child, Let all sing His nativity.
'Tis four thousand years and more, Prophets have foretold His coming.
'Tis four thousand years and more, Have we waited this happy hour.
Ah, how lovely, Ah, how fair, What perfection is His graces.
Ah, how lovely, Ah, how fair, Child divine, so gentle there.
In a stable lodged is He, Straw is all He has for cradle.
In a stable lodged is He, Oh how great humility!
Jesus Lord, O King with power, Though a little babe You come here.
Jesus Lord, O King with power, Rule o'er us from this glad hour." [Chorus] (*41)
Staying with music from France, the combined choirs sang a stunning, harmonious rendition off "Quelle est cette odeur agréable? "
English Translation:
"Where is that goodly fragrance flowing to steal the senses all away?
adorns the air, and nothing like it the shepherds sensed in fields in May?
Where is that goodly fragrance flowing to steal the senses all away?
A light so bright, a beam so piercing it turns our darkness into day.
The light of Christ, it is so radiant, the beam it casts to be our way.
A light so bright, a beam so piercing it turns our darkness into day.
Shepherds to Bethlehem, go hasten! And in a manger see him lay.
Adore your God and your redeemer; Saviour of all to win the day
Shepherds to Bethlehem, go hasten! And in a manger see him lay.
All pow'rful God, and King eternal, The heavens praise with one accord.
Grace, peace and truth give to all nations Spring forth from Jesus Christ our Lord.
All pow'rful God, and King eternal, The heavens praise with one accord." (*42)
Whispering to Nathan, Elizabeth confessed, "I believe that is my favorite song so far. Wasn't it beautiful?"
Nodding, Nathan smiled at Elizabeth while continuing to applaud loudly.
Although "Gesu Bambino," the final piece before the intermission, was from Italy, the choirs sang the verses in English, accompanied by the piano and a lovely female student who played a lilting flute.
"When blossoms flowered 'mid the snows upon a winter night
Was born the Child the Christmas Rose, the King of Love and Light.
The angels sang, the shepherds sang. The grateful earth rejoiced
And at His blessed birth the stars their exultation voiced.
O Come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.
Again the heart with rapture glows to greet the holy night
that gave the world it's Christmas Rose, it's king of Love and Light.
Let every voice acclaim His name, the grateful chorus swell
From paradise to earth He came that we with Him might dwell.
O come let us adore him, O come let us adore Him
O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.
Ah! O come let us adore Him, Ah! O come let us adore Him
Ah! Adore Him, Christ, the Lord.
O come, O come, O come let us adore Him
Let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord." (*43)
Appreciative silence descended until the audience began to applaud. Realizing it was already intermission, the guests' clapping grew loud and long to show their gratitude for the preceding hour they has so enjoyed and for all the talent and work involved. Every attendee was proud of these young people, whether they were family or faculty or not!
As the house lights became brighter, murmurs and movements began in the Hall as the curtain drew closed.

(*33) Maoz Tzur (Rock of Ages) Hebrew, Composed in the 13th Century, the English paraphrase by Marcus Jastrow (1829-1903) and Gustav Gottheil (1827-1903) is not a literal translation, but is based on a similar German hymn by Leopold Stein (1810-1882.) Public Domain.
A.N.: Maoz Tzur (Rock of Ages) is a traditional Hanukah song (Note: This is not the Christian hymn by the same title.) Recommend online performance by SOTA music to hear and see a beautiful processional of this song in Hebrew, performed by The Ruth Asawa San Francisco School Of The Arts Concert Choir at St. Mark's Lutheran Church

(*38) "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy," Traditional West Indian Carol, Public Domain.
A.N.: I first sang this delightful carol in a youth choir in the 1960s and the arrangement that I know and love is recorded by The Northwest Boyschoir, just released 11/16/22. Sung a cappella with a few percussion instruments, I highly recommend you find it online and experience a taste of a Caribbean Christmas as it would have been sung in this story!
(*39) Cabasa: A musical percussion instrument, also known as a hand-shaker, with metal beads. Rhythm is soft but a unique sound. Often used in African and Latino music.
(*40) "Go Tell it on the Mountain" originated as a spiritual and dates back to 1865, although thought to have originated much earlier. In 1907 John Wesley Work, III published the song he had written down from listening to the oral history of the southern peoples. Public Domain.
A.N.: Recommend online: Go Tell It on the Mountain/Mary, Did You Know? Medley - Sounds of Steel Orchestra. The arrangement in this story originated in my imagination and later I went online to look for a steel drum version and what do you know? It exists! LOL Although not the exact instrumentation I imagined, this is a good representation. Enjoy! (And, note to self, always look it up… It may be online!)
(*41) "Il est né le divin enfant" Published in 1874 in a book of French songs collected by Jean-Romary Grosjean. Public Domain.
