Damon had originally applied to be a bodyguard for Elena on a dare. He saw her on television and commented on how beautiful she was. His buddy, Enzo, bet if he got to know her she'd be a bitch. The argument that followed resulted in a dare from Enzo for him to get to know her and prove him wrong. All he had to do was work for Klaus.
