After Nathema (about Lana)

Lana is having lunch at the cantina. They usually try to spend that time together, it allows them to catch up a bit, talk a bit more privately and also helps them relax in the middle of the day. He is late, he comes with a tray and sits opposite of her on her table.

O - What are you having?

L - The same.

O - Again fried veggies? Aren't you ever bored?

L - When I find something I like, I like it.

(He smiles)

L - You?

O - I'm trying something new today. Yesterday's dish wasn't to my taste.

L - I told you that you wouldn't like it.

O - And how was I to know if I didn't try it?

(She smiles)

L - To each his own I suppose.

(After a while, she is done with her food, leans back in her chair and looks at him, she seems to be lost in deep thought. He notices it)

O - What is troubling you?

L - Nothing.

O - You seemed to be contemplating something.

L - Indeed. Us.

(He is intrigued)

O - Us?

L - I was thinking, our taste in food is similar to the way we deal with life.

(He puts his fork down, this is getting interesting)

O - Oh?

(She is smiling)

L - I make a decision I think is good and stick with it. I rarely change my habits. You can adapt easily to a situation. You find new interests constantly. We are almost the opposite in that regard.

O - It's a very good quality for an advisor to have a strong opinion and to be able to defend it.

L - Yes. And for a leader to adapt and not be afraid to take chances.

(He continues with his food. She is still contemplating. He notices it)

O - But, there is something else…

L - What?

O - You tell me. You are still thinking about something.

L - Indeed, I was. What if you get bored again?

O - Of what?

(She looks down to her lap, shyly)

L - Me.

(He stops messing with his food altogether, turns so as to be facing straight to her)

O - I was never bored of you in the first place.

L - But, you sought another's love.

(He is silent for a while, it makes her uneasy, sad even)

O - I can't offer assurances of the future. But, I didn't seek out another's love.

L - Yes, it sort of fell on your lap.

O - You know what I mean.

L - I do. Nonetheless, you meet new people all the time, it is an essential part of your job, and given who you are, many more opportunities may fall on your lap.

O - True.

(She is looking at him expectantly, he is looking at her rather coldly)

L - That's all you are going to say?

O - What more can I say, Lana?

(She gets up from the table as if to leave)

O - Sit down.

(She looks at him sideways)

O - Please.

(He points at her chair)

O - Sit down, please.

(She does so)

O - Is this about our marriage?

L - Yes.

(He makes an urging move)

O - Explain please.

L - Marriage means committing oneself to another, right?

O - Right.

L - I have done that in all the possible ways. I'm effectively married to you.

(He seems amused)

O - Okay…

L - I'm not sure you realise what it means though.

O - Tell me.

L - I just did, and you still require explanation.

O - Okay… so…?

L - What does being married mean to you?

O - That I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you.

L - Until something more interesting comes along.

O - I can't guarantee the future.

(She seems exasperated)

L - No one can! Still, people get married.

O - Where are you getting at?

(She takes a deep breath, tries to calm herself)

L - Did you ask her to marry you?

(He is very serious now)

O - Yes.

L - And why didn't you?

O - She effectively refused. For the better too.

L - What about Ashara? Did you ask her also?

O - She asked me actually.

(Lana laughs a bit)

L - Really?

(He smiles, nods in agreement)

L - But you accepted.

O - Well, sort of. Effectively yes.

L - Don't you see there is a pattern here? You don't take the matter of marriage seriously.

(He leans back in his chair, crosses his hands in front of his chest)

O - I guess I don't… Hmm…

(She is smiling now)

L - I don't expect assurances, but I expect commitment. I would like you to mean it this time.

O - I honestly meant it every time.

L - I don't care about the others. I want you to mean it, this time.

O - Yes. That's fair.

(They remain sitting, looking at each other in silence for quite a while)

L - I have to go.

(She gets up, gives him a small kiss on the cheek and leaves. He remains in the spot for a while longer)

Later that night, in their room. He is on the couch, thinking. She walks in, takes her lightsaber off)

L - Hello, love. You are early tonight.

O - I have been here a while.

L - But your agenda had a late meeting.

O - I bailed on them.

L - Don't do that! Tell me if you aren't feeling up to cancelling, so I will do it for you.

O - I don't care about that at all, Lana. Come here, we need to talk.

L - Okay. What about? Did something happen?

(She sits next to him on the couch)

O - I make you feel insecure, don't I?

L - Oh, this is about our earlier talk.

O - I have been thinking about what you said all day. I think that the reason you brought it up in the first place is because I make you feel insecure.

L - It's not that. It isn't insecurity I'm feeling. I don't want this between us to change. Honesty made us better, made the Alliance better. If you fall in love again, you will start lying again and I don't want that at all. I prefer the truth rather than a nice lie.

(He takes her face in his hands, makes her look straight in his eyes)

O - I will never lie to you.

(He kisses her)

L - I know you mean that now, but when the time comes and you will have to tell me something I won't like, you won't do it. You will fear my reaction.

(He says the following rather playfully)

O - I was warned after all. You did say you will eviscerate me next time.

(She laughs)

L - Exactly.

(Again, looking straight to her eyes)

O - I will never lie to you. Come what may.

(She smiles, she kisses him. She says the following smiling)

L - Okay.

O - Does that mean we are still getting married?

L - We weren't?

O - I thought that since we had a fight, it was off.

L - That wasn't even a real fight. We had a conversation. You believed that a conversation was able to change my feelings for you?

(He smiles broadly)

O - I love you.

(They kiss again, it takes them longer now, it's a very romantic kiss)

O - Undress please.

L - As you wish.

(They make love)
