Hobgoblin threw the bomb at the two, as Spider-Man was knocked into a garbage can and Wolverine was knocked into a pile of crates.
Wolverine grabbed Spider-Man. "I'm tired of being diplomatic. What have you done with Phantom?"
Spider-Man pushed him off. "I don't know what you're talking about. Aren't you at all interested in that clown who just threw a bomb at us?" He asked Wolverine as he dodged his attacks.
Spider-Man webbed Wolverine's feet. "I don't have time for games, Wolverine."
Wolverine cut the web with his claws. "Good. Cause I ain't playing any."
"You boys are having so much fun." Hobgoblin said. "I'd hate to bust up the party, but I will anyway." He threw a pumpkin bomb at the heroes, who got out of the way.
Spider-Man decided to deal with Hobgoblin first. "We'll finish our conversation after I take care of laughing boy." Spider-Man said to Wolverine as he webbed Hobgoblin's bomb to his hand.
"No!" Hobgoblin panicked as he flew away.
Wolverine then tackled Spider-Man as the two kept fighting.
The evil villain, meanwhile, managed to get the webbing off his hand as he spotted a nearby security camera. "Ah, the very thing I need."
Hobgoblin smashed it with his glider, setting off the alarms in the facility.
Landon heard the alarms as he went to one of the monitors. "Talk to me, Lewald."
"Intruders, sir. Area three." Lewald said.
Landon checked the cameras and saw Wolverine and Spider-Man fighting.
"There they are." Genevieve said.
"Mutants." Landon said in disgust. "Activate the missile launchers and turn off those alarms!"
A missile launcher aimed itself at the two heroes.
"Missiles locked on target." Lewald informed Landon.
"Blast that mutant scum into oblivion!" Landon ordered.
Spider-Man knocked Wolverine out of his path. "Get out of my way." His spider sense then went off as it sensed the missiles."
"Spider sense? Danger?" Spider-Man managed to dodge the missiles, while Wolverine barely dodged his. Spider-Man grabbed Wolverine and swung them away from the projectiles.
"Come on. We'll finish our tap dance somewhere else." Spider-Man then tried to examine Wolverine's wounds. "Let me see where you got hit."
Wolverine pushed Spider-Man's hand away. "Don't bother. I heal real quick."
"You can heal by cell?" Spider-Man asked. "I'm impressed."
"I'm not here to impress you." Wolverine said. "Where's Phantom?"
"I told you I don't know." Spiderman repeated for the billionth time. "I haven't seen him since last night when he told me about this place."
Hobgoblin chuckled as he saw the two heroes talking. "Perfect. You two keep Landon distracted so I can collect what's open."
"So what's with that clown in the Halloween costume?" Wolverine asked about Hobgoblin.
"He claims Landon has a secret agenda." Spider-Man said. "To destroy all mutants."
"I'm gonna find out for myself." Wolverine said as he started walking. "And you're coming with me. If you're lying." He flashed his claws. "You're fillet spider."
"I get the picture, Wolvie." Spider-Man said. "But have you ever thought about seeing a manicurist for those things?"
"Where are they?" Landon demanded of Lewald.
"They got away, sir." Lewald said.
"Then find them!" Landon ordered. "They can't be allowed to disrupt my experiment."
"Your experiment was disrupted the moment you caught me." Danny said as he rolled his eyes.
Landon ignored him as he left the room.
Danny then looked at Genevieve as she was typing. "Why are you helping that asshole?"
"Mr. Landon is not an asshole." Genevieve said.
"We are talking about the same Landon, right?" Danny asked.
"He wants to eliminate the mutant condition." Genevieve elaborated. "The suffering they must endure."
Danny waved that off. "Most of their suffering comes from putting up with pricks like Landon."
"If they don't exist, then they can't suffer." Genevieve argued.
"You're a mutant, aren't you?" Danny asked.
Genevieve turned to Danny with a shocked look. "How did you know?"
"You have that look in your eye." Danny explained. "The look of being afraid that someone's going to find out who you are. I've had that look plenty of times when I was a teenager." He said, thinking back to his fear of his parents finding out.
Genevieve turned away and walked out of the room.
Two guards were patrolling the hallway when Wolverine burst through the ceiling and threw them into a wall. Spider-Man then webbed them to it.
"Subtlety is not your strong point, is it?" Spider-Man asked.
"Can't even spell the word." Wolverine said as he was reminded of Danny by Spiderman's jokes. This didn't make him happy. He already had one Phantom. He didn't need another.
"You're the one with the nose." Spider-Man said. "Where to next?"
Wolverine sniffed the area. "What I smell is trouble." Wolverine said as he looked behind him to see two more guards charge at them.
"Good nose." Spider-Man said as the two dodged the guard's laser blasts.
A security guard saw the two heroes in the facility through the camera and left to deal with them, leaving the place empty for Hobgoblin to come in.
"Wonderful." Hobgoblin said. He saw a computer that said Mutant Genetic Research. "Now I'll go play Trick R Treat."
"Mutant genetic research." He read. "Computer open wide." He put a CD-ROM in and started typing. "Tell me all your secrets."
"All data on genetic mutant code has been transferred to CD-ROM." The computer said.
Hobgoblin took out the CD-ROM and kissed it. "Nice treat." He turned back to the computer. "Now for the trick." He started typing as the computer's voice changed to that of the Hobgoblin's.
"Greetings." The computer said. "Your computer's data has just been deleted by the Hobgoblin computer virus."
"Oh, I'm such a bad hacker." Hobgoblin said. He flew away as he muttered to himself. "Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad."
Wolverine and Spider-Man were searching through the halls when Spider-Man spotted two more guards, which he webbed up.
Another pair showed up as they chased the two into a warehouse room. Spider-Man dropped down behind them and threw them at Wolverine, who caught them and threw them up to the girder above them.
"Nice moves, kid." Wolverine complimented. He really was like Danny.
"And you're not so bad yourself." Spider-Man replied. "For an old guy."
They then heard the two guards begging to be let down.
"Don't hang around waiting for us." Wolverine said. He then sniffed the area and pointed to his right. "That way."
Landon and Genevieve were at the controls as Danny was held above the vat of the mutant-destroying chemical.
"The chemicals are just at the right temperature." Landon said. "It's time to begin, Genevieve."
Genevieve was hesitant. "Are you sure we're doing the right thing?"
"This is no time for second thoughts." Landon said. "Mutants are the curse of the human race."
"Actually, the curse of the human race is their own ignorance and refusal to learn from their own mistakes." Danny corrected.
"To be a mutant is to be cursed." Genevieve said, not listening to what Danny said.
Lewald appeared on the monitor. "Sir, Spider-Man and Wolverine are heading for their lab."
"Guess Spider-Man took my advice on coming here." Danny said. "Though I'm surprised Wolverine came looking for me. I thought it would be Rogue."
"No!" Landon shouted. "You must stop them! Do you hear me? Stop them!"
Spider-Man and Wolverine came into a room as Spider-Man shut the door, preventing the guards from coming in.
"Well, that ought to keep them..." Spider-Man stopped as he realized they were trapped in a dead end. "Nice tracking, Wolvie. Only problem is there's no exit."
"Then I'll just have to make one." Wolverine said as he used his claws to make a hole in the wall.
"Cool." Spider-Man said.
"We must move quickly!" Landon urged Genevieve.
Genevieve turned to Danny. "I'm sorry." She apologized. "It's not my fault."
"You're helping this guy commit genocide, and you're saying it's not your fault?" Danny looked at her in disgust.
Wolverine finished carving a hole in the wall.
"Yep." Spider-Man remarked. "Claws are definitely more fun than doors."
The guards blasted the door open as it fell on Spider-Man.
They saw Spider-Man's hand stick out from under the door.
"There he is!" One guard yelled. "Waste him!"
Another one aimed his gun at Spider-Man. "You can kiss your webs goodnight, wallcrawler."
Spider-Man threw the door at them. "Next time, don't barge in without knocking."
Wolverine burst into the room where Landon, Genevieve, and Danny were.
Landon turned to the guards. "Stop him before he ruins everything!"
The guards were about to deal with Wolverine when Danny had enough as he phased out of his cage and knocked them out with a pair of ecto-blasts.
"Thanks for coming for me, Wolverine." Danny thanked him. "Although, to be perfectly honest, I was expecting Rogue instead of you."
"Bub, count yourself lucky that Rogue didn't find out that you stayed here even though you could've gotten out of here whenever you wanted." Wolverine snarled.
Danny shrugged. "Hey, I stuck around so I could hear what his evil plan was." He pointed to the chemical. "He's going to use that chemical to destroy the mutant race. It was also funny hearing him brag about having a mutant test subject, even though I'm not a mutant."
Landon heard this. "Wait! You're not a mutant?"
Spider-Man then came in. "Looks like we've got a little case of mistaken identity." He looked at Danny. "Good to see you're okay, Phantom."
Danny smiled. "Wolverine didn't give you a hard time, did he?"
"With him, I can honestly never tell." Spider-Man admitted.
"Neither can I." Danny said as the two heroes laughed.
Hobgoblin burst in as he confronted Landon. "Why does my business with you always keep getting interrupted, Landon?"
Landon smirked. "Ever heard of Karma?" He pulled out a gun and fired on Hobgoblin, who evaded his shots.
"Who the hell is that?" Danny asked as he looked at the Hobgoblin. "And why does his voice remind me of Undergrowth for some reason?"
Lewald was watching all this from the security cameras as he reported to Kingpin. "Situation critical, sir. Landon's chasing Hobgoblin. Spider-Man and the mutants are wrecking the lab."
"And what of the mutant army that Landon was to create for me?" Kingpin demanded.
"I don't think that was ever Landon's intention, sir." Lewald said.
"How disappointing." Kingpin said. "Evacuate immediately. I no longer have need for a spy on those premises."
"My men and I are bailing out." Lewald said. "Operation terminated." He ended the call.
"I told you not to trust Landon." Smythe said to Kingpin.
"Mind yourself, Smythe." Kingpin scolded. "Or I might take out my frustration on you. Do you understand?"
"Quite." Smythe responded.
"Landon!" Hobgoblin shouted as he kept dodging Landon's shots. "I wiped out all the data in your computer. Now I have this." He pulled out the CD-ROM. "The last and only copy of your work. What's it worth to you?"
Landon gasped. "My life's work. All those years." He kept firing.
The three heroes looked on.
"Should we do something?" Wolverine asked.
Danny tried firing a couple of ecto-blasts but Hobgoblin was too fast.
"He's a speedy little devil." Danny said.
"Actually, the correct term is goblin." Spider-Man said.
"Come back with that disc!" Landon demanded.
"Sorry." Hobgoblin said. "Finders keepers. Losers weepers."
Landon went up the steps to get a better shot at the villain.
Danny also got up to higher ground as he fired an ecto-blast at the CD-ROM, destroying it.
"No!" Hobgoblin cried out in frustration as he sneered at Danny. "Who are you?"
Danny smirked. "I'm Danny Phantom."
Landon, however, was even more distraught.
"My life's work! All destroyed!" He glared at Danny. "Because of you!" He charged at Danny, but he went intangible, causing Landon to fall off the railing and into the chemical.
Hobgoblin decided to leave, as he had nothing else for him here. He shouted at Danny as he left. "We'll meet again, Danny Phantom!" He then muttered to himself. "On second thought, forget it. I'm crazy enough to take on Spider-Man and the Kingpin, but that guy? No thank you."
Genevieve pointed at the vat. "Dr. Landon's in there! We got to get him out!"
Landon climbed out of the vat as he fell to the floor, covered in the chemical.
"Question." Danny said. "This thing destroys mutants, but what does it do to humans?"
"No!" Landon screamed as he was surrounded by electric energy.
"What is happening to him?" Wolverine asked.
Landon started turning green as he grew a tail and two tentacles that protruded from his back. The monstrous Landon then went to a generator.
"Do something!" Genevieve pleaded. "You're mutants. Use your powers!"
"Yeah, I don't think we can help him." Danny said. "Looks like Karma has come for him."
Genevieve went up to Landon. "Mr. Landon, stop. We can help you."
Landon grabbed Genevieve with one of his tentacles as he started to leave.
Wolverine got in front of him. "That's no way to treat a lady." Wolverine pulled out his claws and tried to attack him, but Landon threw him aside.
"You sure showed him." Spider-Man and Danny spoke in unison.
"Shut up, you two." Wolverine replied.
Landon went to another generator. "I need relief from the pain." He muttered as he absorbed the electricity, making him grow in size. He then shot a beam of lightning out of his tentacle, making a hole in the wall for him to leave through.
The three followed the monster.
"It's my worst fear." Spider-Man said. "Turning into some mutated thing like that." He swung to the top of the building. "And now I got to stop it."
"It's heading for midtown, Danny." Wolverine said as he saw the creature leave the premises.
"It'll look for more electricity to ease its pain." Danny said.
"If we don't do something, it's gonna drain the entire city's power." Spider-Man said.
"And if it does, it'll become invincible." Danny said.
The monster rampaged through the city as it pulled off a manhole and sent a tentacle to feed on the power of one of the powerlines down there, causing it to grow even bigger.
"This is John Beard from the J3 News Network live report." A man reported. "A monstrous creature apparently drawing power from the city's electric power grid has escaped from the Brand Corporation, where Herbert Landon has been carrying on mutant genetic research. The creature is now terrorizing the city and heading for Times Square. And the police are unable to stop it."
Rogue and Cyclops were watching this report from the Blackbird.
"Are you getting this news feed, Rogue?" Xavier asked over the radio.
"I'm getting it loud and clear." Rogue said as she looked at the monster. "That is one ugly critter."
"Danny and Wolverine are down there." Xavier informed them. "They'll need your help."
"We're on our way, professor." Cyclops said.
The creature grabbed a news helicopter in its hand as Rogue left the Blackbird to help them out.
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size, big fella?" Rogue grabbed the helicopter and set it safely on the ground, only to be hit by the creature's tentacle and knocked into a building as she fell to the ground.
Danny managed to fly in and save her. "I got you."
Rogue smiled. "Glad to have you back, Spooky. I was getting worried."
"You don't need to worry, Rogue." Danny said.
"Sugar, you're my boyfriend." Rogue pointed out. "I'm always going to worry about you."
Spider-Man and the X-Men then met up.
"We came as soon as we heard the news." Cyclops said. "What can we do?"
"That thing feeds on electricity to grow stronger." Danny said.
"He is a walking storage battery." Storm realized.
"What if we shut off its power?" Spider-Man suggested.
"It might stop his powers from growing, but we don't know if it would stop them permanently." Danny said.
"If we short circuit the physio-electric energy field." Beast said before Wolverine interrupted him.
"Right." He said sarcastically as he pointed to the creature climbing up a building. "I'll just climb up there, hand him a wire, and say, hold this."
"Wait!" Spider-Man interjected. "We can do it remotely. If we had a microwave antenna, adjust it to the right frequency, and a transmitter big enough to hold all that energy."
"Yes." Beast nodded. "That would work. We have both in the Blackbird. Come with me. So, there appears to be a keen scientific mind behind that garish mask. Eh, my friend?"
"Takes one to know one, blue boy?" Spider-Man replied.
"Set that frequency at twenty eight microfarads." Spider-Man said. He was now on the Blackbird with Wolverine, Beast, Cyclops, and Rogue.
"Done." Beast said. "Begin sequence to align the two antennas."
A satellite dish emerged from the bottom of the Blackbird.
"Antenna aligned." Beast said.
"Now it's their turn on the ground." Spider-Man said.
Storm floated in front of the creature. "Power of lightning, illuminate the night." Storm struck the creature with her lightning.
"This ought to make it see spots." Jubilee said from the ground as she fired her pyrotechnics at it.
Danny was also there, as he fired his ghost ray as well.
"Gambit gonna deal you a real fine hand." Gambit said as he threw his cards at the monster.
This caused the creature to let go of Genevieve as she fell into Gambit's arms.
"I got her." Gambit said.
Beast then moved on with phase two of their plan. "Perfect. Now we must make sure that Landon isn't grounded."
"Rogue, your turn." Spider-Man said.
"Be careful." Cyclops warned her.
"Don't worry about me, sugar." Rogue said. "Once bitten, twice shy." She then wrapped a cable around the creature's torso. "Haul away!" She shouted to the others.
"Full power!" Spider-Man ordered. "Now!"
The Blackbird lifted the creature into the air as its energy was being drained.
"It's working." Beast observed.
The Blackbird then stopped as it started to shake.
"What's wrong?" Wolverine inquired.
"The creature's too heavy." Cyclops stated. "We're going down! I can't keep her aloft. Brace yourself for a crash."
"No." Genevieve said as she stood next to Danny and Gambit. "No more suffering." She closed her eyes and put her hands to her head as she used her telekinesis to lower the Blackbird gently to the ground.
"Something has taken control of the ship." Cyclops said. "We're leveling off."
"You mean they won't be picking us up with blotters?" Spider-Man joked. "I like it!"
Landon was transformed back to his normal self, although half of his body still resembled the creature as he was placed on the ground.
"Thanks for helping them." Danny said to Genevieve. "And for accepting who you are."
"What is she?" Spider-Man asked as they exited the Blackbird.
"She's a mutant." Danny explained. "A telekinetic."
"A mutant." Spider-Man said. "Of course. It all makes sense now. You were the one who rescued me in the auditorium when the ceiling caved in."
"It's true." Genevieve said. "I am a mutant. That's why I first went to work with Landon. I had hoped he really did have a cure."
"I can relate to that." Spider-Man said as an ambulance came to take Landon away.
"His problem has been solved." Genevieve said. "But what about the monster within me?"
Danny rolled his eyes. "You're not a monster. We can introduce you to Xavier. He can help you."
"Maybe somewhere there's someone who can help me too." Spider-Man hoped.
Cyclops went up to Spider-Man. "I'm sorry we got off to such a rocky start. You're a heck of a team player."
"You got that right." Gambit agreed. "A regular ace."
"Nice working with you, kid." Wolverine said.
"Real nice." Jubilee said.
"Thanks." Spider-Man replied. "I don't know what to say."
Danny offered his hand. "Just remember, no matter what problems have got or mistakes you make, you don't have to carry it all by yourself. You've got friends if you need them."
Spider-Man shook his head. "Thanks, Phantom. You're a real pal."
The X-Men said their goodbyes as they left on the Blackbird.
Spider-Man caught a nearby newspaper that said that Dr. Mariah Crawford was arriving.
"Dr. Mariah Crawford?" He said to himself.
"Well, here goes nothing." Spider-Man said as he swung to her lab.
She gasped. "Spider-Man. I'm glad you came, but our time is short. I must leave for Africa in three days. What took you so long to call me for help?"
"I had to be reminded that when I'm in trouble, I'm not alone." Spider-Man said. "I need to turn to my friends."
