Pilar had a dream about Joshua. She was very worried so as soon as she could get away from the kitchen, she went to find Jason. She wanted to find out if he had heard anything. Jason was just sending his crews out to their stations when Pilar reached the top of the mountain at the main camp. Big Swede and Corky were discussing the day's jobs and Jeremy was talking to several of his crew.
"Hello Pilar!" Jeremy said, "is there anything I can do for you?"
"Por favor Senor Jeremy, have you received a telegram or anything from Senor Joshua?" Pilar said looking straight at Jeremy. Jeremy looked at her and said:
"Well, not yet! But I am sure we will hear from him sometime. Are you worried about him?" Jeremy asked. Jason came up to where Jeremy was and said:
"Jeremy, take your crew up to the south and Mark the trees. I will answer Pilar's questions!" Jeremy smiled and left. He wasn't sure what to say to Pilar. There had been some discussion before Joshua left that if anything should happen to him, he wanted Pilar to be able to continue her business. Joshua had hinted that he was indeed interested in Pilar and when he got back, he was going to 'pursue' her.
"Pilar, it is good to see you. Your tortillas are very good." Jason said. Pilar said:
"Gracias Senor Jason. Have you heard anything from Joshua yet?
"Pilar, I did receive a telegram today. Nothing to fear, Josh says that he will be there another couple of weeks to settle property and paperwork." Jason said there was one more thing, but Josh had said he wanted to wait to tell anyone until he was on his way home.
"Senor Jason. I had a dream; you know dreams are very real sometimes?" she stated in a question. Jason nodded in agreement and then said:
"What was the dream about if I may ask?" he knew she would tell him and he waited.
"Senor Jason, I dreamed that She was still alive, and that She had Joshua and would not let him come home! She is a very evil woman!" Pilar spit on the ground. Jason said to her:
"Pilar, she is dead. He confirmed it with the sheriff!" Pilar crossed herself and said a prayer. She was thankful that the woman was dead!
"Gracias Senor Jason. I will go back to Seattle now and continue my work." Pilar said. Jason asked if she would like a ride down since he was going into town for some supplies and to see Aaron. She accepted and they went into town.
Later in the day, she kept having an unsettling feeling about Joshua staying there for another couple of weeks. She decided to take the train and go see him. She would not tell anyone what she was doing. She told Lottie that she had to go visit some relatives but did not say where. She took her money that she had saved and used it to buy a ticket to the train station in Tacoma. She left the next morning and headed to Montana.
She arrived in Montana at the same train station that Joshua had arrived at. Len Thompson was near the train station and saw her get off the train. He wondered why she was back? He went to where she was standing on the platform.
"Hello Pilar!" Sheriff Len said. She looked at him and smiled. He had been one of those who was kind to her and some of the others.
"Hola! Sheriff!" she said as she walked to him.
"What brings you to town?" Sheriff Len asked.
"I came to town to find something that I left behind in the Milk Barn. It was a family heirloom." Pilar said. Len looked at her and then said:
It is getting kind of late, how about you come to the house for dinner, Maggie has a great stew cooking. You can go out tomorrow to find that heirloom." Pilar thought about it. Supper sounded good, she also wanted to find out where Josh was before she went to the cabin. So, she let Len take her bag and they went over to his house.
"Pilar, I don't know if you know Josh Bolt, I remember he was there while you were there…." Len trailed off as they were walking.
"Si Senor, I know him. I live in Seattle now and own my own business!" she said proudly.
"So, you know he is here then. That is good, because he is staying with us, and you are welcome to stay with us as well." Len said as he opened the kitchen door.
"Maggie, another guest!" he shouted and took her things upstairs to the room across from Joshuas room.
"Well, Pilar, how are you? I sure do miss your smile and Posole. I never could get the recipe to work for me. Would you teach it to me again." Said Maggie who gave Pilar a great big hug. Shellie stood right next to Maggie and tugged on her dress. Before Pilar could say anything, Maggie introduced her to Pilar.
"Pilar, this is Shellie. She is Sheila's child…"
"…and Joshua's as well!" Pilar finished. She knelt down to say hello to the child who spontaneously gave her a hug and said:
"This is Mawy, what you?" said Shellie.
"My name is Pilar!"
"Plar?" Shellie said uncertainly.
"Pi-lar" Pilar said a second time enunciating the sounds of the letters. Shellie again tried the name:
"Peee war!" She smiled and Pilar smiled. She did see Joshua in her. She also saw the Bolt resemblance around her face and eyes. But she also saw a little of Sheila in her expressions.
"Shellie, I need to get cleaned up for supper, but we can sit and visit afterwards?" asked Pilar.
"Yes!" said Shellie who skipped off to another room to play. Maggie took Pilar to the room and said that supper would be in an hour, she would have time for a short nap. Pilar thanked her and shut the door. The heirloom can wait, she will go tomorrow to see the Milk Barn. She might even get to see Joshua; wouldn't he be surprised!
Josh wasn't home and later Pilar found out that he had stayed up at the cabin with Frank for the night. Len wasn't worried and told Pilar that he probably would be home the next day. Pilar wasn't very happy but then it gave her time to get to know Shellie.
In the parlor, Len and Maggie and Shellie and Pilar sat and visited. Pilar helped Shellie with dressing her doll.
"You know Piwar, I need a mommy, will you be my mommy!" Pilar looked at this darling blue eyed blonde haired little girl. She looked up at Maggie and Len, wanting to know what to say.
"Pilar, I need your Posole recipe could you help in the kitchen?" Maggie said while looking at Len who got the idea that it might be Shellie's bedtime.
"Shellie, say goodnight to Pilar, it is your bedtime." Len said.
"No want to go bed!" Shellie said quietly. Pilar watched and said:
"Shellie, I will be here tomorrow, we can talk and play again!" Shellie was pouting, Pilar knew that face well, it was her mother's, She wondered if Joshua really was going to bring this child back, she wondered how he was dealing with this. Len said.
"Shellie, say goodnight!"
"Good night!" Shellie said and then she stomped off to bed not giving Pilar a chance to tell her goodnight.
"Len, why don't I put her to bed and then Maggie and I can discuss the recipe? Suggested Pilar. Both Maggie and Len agreed so Pilar went to Shellie who was sitting on the stairs with a gigantic pout on her face, Pilar almost laughed.
"Would you like me to tell you a story before you go to bed?"
"Yes, pwease!"
"Okay, then let's get you ready for bed." Pilar said as she walked upstairs holding Shellie's hand.
