The Painful Truth - Chapter 27: Keiko
.
Wednesday, October 26 (Continued):
Tuesday, Lunch, Restaurant, San Franciso Time (Wed Early Early Morning Tokyo):
What the hell just happened?
I dropped the dishes and grabbed my phone:
911 Operator: "911. What's your emergency?"
Server: "He just stabbed her. I don't understand…"
911 Operator: "Someone's been stabbed?"
Server: "Yes. The knife…he used the steak knife." I can't even look…so much blood.
911 Operator: Got to get her to focus before she loses it. "Ma'am. Who stabbed someone? Are they still there? Are you in danger?"
Server: "No. They got him. He's on the floor."
911 Operator: Lots of screaming. Public somewhere. "What's the address?"
Server: "Stan's Steaks on Everette Ave."
911 Operator: "Help is on the way. The person who was stabbed…are they still alive?"
Server: "I don't think so…" [breaks off into sobs]
.
911 Operator: "911. What's your emergency?"
Random Guest: "I'm at Stan's Steaks at Everette Ave and High Street. Someone was just stabbed. I think they're dead."
911 Operator: "Sir, I'm sending help now. Where is the person who stabbed them?"
Random Guest: "Some guy tackled him to the floor. He's got him on the ground."
911 Operator: I can hear someone yelling in the background about some bitch leading him on. "Police and an ambulance are on the way. Can you tell me what happened?"
Random Guest: "I was just sitting here and then they started yelling. He called her a bitch and then just fucking stabbed her in the chest…"
.
"Get the fuck off me, you asshole!"
He's bucking pretty hard, but I managed to zip tie his hands.
"Keiko-sama!" Kohima yelled, and I looked over.
No…
She's in his arms, knife sticking out of her chest, her eyes wide open but dull.
"Fucking bitch!" Joshua bucked underneath me again, "How do you like that, huh? That's what you get for leading me on."
I leaned forward, grinding my knee into his upper back, "Shut up."
"Fuck you! Let me go, Dickhead. She deserved it."
That's when I gagged him with my handkerchief.
As soon as I had him under control, Kohima got my attention, "She's not breathing. She's…" He can't say it. I swallowed down the nausea. We've both been with her for over a decade. "Call Aoyama-sama."
I pulled out my phone and hit the speed dial.
.
Phone call between Tanabe [Keiko's guard] and Aoyama [Sugahara Family Security Head in Tokyo]:
Aoyama: I squinted hard at the clock. 1:37 am. This better be important. "Aoyama."
Tanabe: "Aoyama-sama, this is Tanabe in California. There's been a security breach. Keiko-sama is dead."
Aoyama: Dead? Did he say dead?
Tanabe: "Protocol requires we call you immediately."
Aoyama: I threw off the covers and stumbled to the closet. "What happened? Be specific."
As he told me about the argument and the stabbing, I threw on some clothes and headed for the family wing.
I do not what to have this conversation.
"Hang on, Tanabe."

Early Early Wednesday Morning, Sugahara Master Bedroom, Tokyo:
Bang! Bang!
I jerked awake to someone pounding on the door to our rooms. "Masaji-sama!"
"Aoyama-san?," I heard Masaji mumble as he crawled out of bed and headed across the room.
The door opened, "What?"
"We have a security breach in California."
I felt my heart thud as my eyes flew open. Keiko!
"What breach?"
"There's been an attack. I'm getting details now. I suggest you and Yoko-sama come to the command center."
I already had my robe and slippers on when they both turned to me.

Early Early Wednesday Morning, Sugahara Security Command Center, Tokyo:
Aoyama-sama'd texted ahead, so we were ready when he and the family arrived. I'd cleared the conference table, transferred Tanabe's call to the speaker phone, and ordered tea service from the kitchens.
Didn't stop me from nearly jumping through the ceiling when the door slammed open and Aoyama-sama barked, "Is he on there?" and pointed to the speakerphone.
"Yes," and I hit the button to unmute it.
"Tanabe, report!"
Tanabe (on speaker phone): "The police and ambulance have arrived. The paramedics have pronounced Keiko-sama dead."
Yoko-sama let out a scream and collapsed into a chair. "Dead! My baby's dead!?"
Tanabe (on speaker phone): "Joshua's been taken into custody. They're putting him in the back of a patrol car for now while they perform interviews."
"And Keiko-sama?"
Tanabe (on speaker phone): "Pending coroner."
"Stand by, Tanabe. Report in with anything new."
Tanabe (on speaker phone): "Yes, Sir."
Aoyama-sama hit mute and told the parents and the rest of us everything he knew.
.
Once Masaji-sama and Yoko-sama were caught up with everything I could tell them, I unmuted Tanabe and let him give us a rundown on what's happening there.
The police are interviewing the guards and any other witnesses. The corner is still almost an hour out. The suspect hasn't left the premises yet.
I pulled out my tablet and opened the checklist for California emergencies. So much to do.
My first call was to the off-duty guards in California letting them know what happened and getting them to the restaurant. Tanabe might need them. Next, I called the family lawyer, Kuwamoto-san. He's on his way in. It's his responsibility to deal with the law firm in California we've put on retainer.
"Aoyama-san?"
"Yes, Masaji-sama?"
"Please call my assistant and have him come in."
"Right away," but he didn't hear me. He started pacing the room, mumbling to himself.
.
How could this happen? My daughter was supposed to be safe. She left the country. No one in the US knew her, knew who her family is. She was supposed to be just another college student.
And now my baby's dead.
Killed by another student. What the hell is wrong with people over there?
I stopped and stared at the main screen showing the camera on the estate gates. It's a good thing Aoyama-san talked us out of the guards setting up a live-stream. Yoko doesn't need to see that. Hell, I don't need to see that.
Yoko's crying sent a shiver through me. It's like nails on a chalkboard. Maybe someone should get the family doctor down here and give her something.
Movement caught my eye on the screen, and I recognized our head lawyer's car. At least Aoyama-san's thinking clearly.
That's when my assistant came in the room, and I waived him over to Aoyama-san.
.
"What do you need me to do, Aoyama-sama?"
Tsujimoto had thrown on some clothes and dashed over here from his room in the servant's quarters. I'm glad he grabbed some shoes. He might not make it back to his room for a while.
I gave him the bullet points on what had happened so far. "Yoko-sama's in shock. Call the family doctor and get him over here."
Once that call was made, I continued, "I've got security handled. This was a single attack. No one else in the family's in danger. Kuwamoto's on his way. He'll handle legal from here and is in contact with the American firm. I need you to monitor social and administrative."
"Got it."
We both turned to the door when the lawyer came in. He reported directly to me. "I called our US law firm. They're dispatching two lawyers to the restaurant to watch over our interests and smooth anything out between our guards and the police."
"Good. ETA?"
"Thirty minutes."

Tuesday, Lunch, Restaurant, San Franciso Time (Wed Early Early Morning Tokyo):
"Are you the officer in charge?"
"Incident commander, Pat Dougall." Lawyers. I looked them up and down. Expensive lawyers.
"Adam Wilkerson." I gestured to the guy next to him, "Michael DuBois. We're here to represent Keiko Sugahara and her family."
Fucking foreigners. God damn international incident. Thought this was an average lover's thing until I found out the girl had fucking bodyguards. Bodyguards! Shit-ton of good they did her. Bet they get fired.
I glanced at the card he handed me. Shit. Now I'm dealing with one of the biggest firms in fucking San Fransisco.
"It's our understanding that Joshua Harrigan has been arrested."
"He's been detained, charges pending."
"I'd like to go to the precinct when he does and monitor the process. I'd like Michael to join Ms. Sugahara's body at the morgue and monitor that process as well."
"I'm not sure…"
He held up his hands, palms forward, "We're not here to intrude. The family wants to know what's going on, and we'll act as their eyes and ears. We want to help the prosecution and see justice done for Keiko. It is not our wish to interfere."
What do I care? As soon as they leave, they're either the detective's or the coroner's problem, not mine. "Fine. Be sure to check in with the appropriate offices when you get there."
"We will."
.
I'd given my statement and met with the American lawyer. They're getting ready to transport Joshua to the police station, and we're going to meet them there.
I checked with Kohima before I left. The coroner had come, and they were preparing to transport her as well. "I want to go with her." He's covered in her blood and looks like he's in shock.
"Have one of the other guards take you back to base for a shower and a change of clothes. They won't start right away, and you have no idea how long you'll be there."
I could tell he wanted to argue but lost the chance when they started to wheel her body out. "Fine. I'll keep you updated."
"Thank you."
I left one of the other guards here in case the police needed anything and left for the police station.
When I passed the squad car, I could hear that bastard still yelling about how she got what she deserved.
I should have killed him while I had the chance.

Early Wednesday Morning, Sugahara Security Command Center, Tokyo:
"Sir, do you want me to call Shigeru-sama?"
No response. Masaji-sama's sitting on the sofa off to the side of the conference table. Yoko-sama's curled up against him, almost asleep. Not sure what the doctor gave her, but it calmed her down quite a bit. She hasn't said anything in the last hour.
I raised my voice a bit, "Masaji-sama?" His eyes slowly tracked up to mine. "Your son. Do you want me to call Shigeru-sama?"
"I'll do it. Bring me the phone."

Late Morning, Phone Call, Yoko [Keiko's mother] to Cho Nomura:
My baby's dead. I don't know what to do.
Masaji and Shigeru are still in that security room, but I couldn't take it anymore, so I left. It's not like the guards over there were saying anything new. Just that the man who did this was arrested, and I'll never see my baby again.
I stopped at a door. I'd just been wandering, but here I am at Keiko's rooms. It's like they were calling to me. I opened the door and walked in.
She'll never sleep in this bed again.
It doesn't seem real. Am I asleep? It's hard to think; I can't focus.
My feet took me to her desk, and I saw a picture of her and Nomura from their first year at Ouran Middle School. They've been close for so long.
I really should let Nomura know what happened.
.
Cho: "Good morning, Yoko-san."
Yoko: "Where are you, Nomura-chan?"
Cho: That's odd. "At Todi. I'm done with my morning classes and am meeting Honey-kun for lunch soon. It's the first week of the new semester."
Yoko: "I need to tell you about Keiko."
Cho: "Tell me what?"
Yoko: I crawled into Keiko's bed. I'm so tired. "Something horrible happened in California…my baby…my baby's…"
Cho: "Yoko-san?" All I can hear is sobbing, and my stomach's churning. Keiko! I started yelling into the phone, "Yoko-san! What happened? Is Keiko alright?"
Yoko: "My baby's dead, Nomura-chan. He killed her."
Cho: "Yoko-san!" She's slurring her words. "You're not making any sense. Slow down. What happened?"
Yoko: "He killed her. She'd dead. In the restaurant. Tanabe called. He couldn't do anything."
Cho: "Yoko-san, where is Keiko?!"
Yoko: "She's gone."
And the phone disconnected.
.
"Cho-sama?" She's just standing there staring at her phone. "Cho-sama?" I touched her arm and her knees buckled. I led her a couple steps back so she could sit on a bench.
"Cho-sama?"
She just sat there, staring straight ahead. Her phone slipped from her grip and fell to the ground.
I checked the last number. Sugahara-sama. What happened?

Lunch, Todi Campus:
"Kyoya!"
What's he doing here? He didn't have a class at this time and doesn't have another for two hours. "What Tamaki?"
"Let's have lunch. You only have an hour before your next class."
I flashed my glasses at him, "How do you know my schedule?"
"Ah…you told me?"
"Really?"
"Yes. Last week."
I must have been asleep.
"Come on. There's vending in the refectory."
Somehow we were already headed in that direction, and I don't see a way out of this. "Vending? You expect me to eat vending?"
"Well, what were you going to eat?"
He's got me there. All I have is a protein bar. "Fine. Hundreds of people eat it every day and don't die."
"That's the spirt," and he grabbed my hand and started walking faster.
We turned a corner, and there was Cho and her detail. Something's wrong. He saw them too and headed towards them.
"Cho! Kyoya and I are headed for a marvelous vending lunch. You and Honey should join us."
"Ah…Tamaki…"
"It's fine, Kyoya. I'm sure they have cake."
"Tamaki," I jerked my head towards her, and he finally took a closer look.
.
"Darling Cho," I dropped down on my knees in front of her, "what's wrong? Are you alright?"
I heard Kyoya talking to her detail head, "What happened Yamada-san?"
"I'm not sure. She got a phone call from Sugahara-sama and collapsed on the bench."
"From Keiko?"
"No, her mother."
Cho's still not doing anything, so I cupped her face in my hands and turned it to face me, "Cho? What happened?"
Her eyes slowly focused on me, then they blinked, and a tear spilled from each and ran down her face. "She said she's dead."
"Who?"
"Keiko. She said Keiko's dead." Two more tears fell. "I don't understand."
.
I instantly turned to Yamada, "I'm calling Sugahara security." We stepped away from the primaries so I could put it on speaker. I saw Kyoya-sama break away and follow us.
Phone call between Tachibana and Aoyama [Sugahara Security Head]:
Aoyama: Why is Tachibana-san calling my personal cell phone? Ootori-sama's here in Tokyo, not California. "Aoyama."
Tachibana: "You're on speaker with me and Nomura-sama's detail head, Tamada. We're on the Todi campus with Nomura-sama. She received a phone call from Yoko-sama and now is in shock. She told us that Keiko-sama's dead. What is going on?"
Aoyama: Yoko-sama called Nomura-sama? From where? I looked around and realized she wasn't in the room. Dammit.
"Can she hear us?"
Tachibana: "No."
Aoyama: "Early this morning Tokyo time, Keiko-sama was having lunch with a classmate. They argued, and he stabbed her. She died on site."
Tachibana: "The classmate?"
Aoyama: "Arrested."
Tachibana: Yamada-san and I looked at each other and then over to Cho-sama. "And Yoko-sama decided to call her and give her that news over the phone?"
Aoyama: "I'm sorry for that. As you can imagine, she was practically hysterical this morning. The family doctor gave her something to calm her down. Masaji-sama and I have been on the phone with California, and she must have slipped out of the security offices and made that call. She's obviously not thinking clearly."
Tachibana: Obviously. "I suggest you find her and keep her from doing any more damage. You should also contact Cho Mei-sama and let her know what happened. Call me back when you've done that, and we'll have a plan on our end."
Aoyama: "You're right. I'll take care of it," and I hung up the phone and went to clean up this mess.
.
Keiko's dead?
How the fuck did that happen?
She has security. Her detail is Morinozuka trained.
"Kyoya-sama?"
"What?" I snapped at Tachibana.
"We need to contact Haninozuka-sama and get him here for Nomura-sama. Then we need to decide what to do next." He lowered his voice, "We don't want Tamaki-sama making that decision."
Oh, hell no.
We found out that Honey-senpai was meeting Cho at the refectory. Tamaki texted him and redirected him to our location. He arrived in just a few minutes.
.
I turned the corner and immediately saw her on the bench, Tama-chan kneeling in front of her. "Cho-chan?"
That's when Tachibana and Ootori stepped out in front of me. If it had just been Ootori, I would have plowed right through him, but Tachibana doesn't do anything without a good reason.
"Haninozuka-sama," he said, holding out his hand to stop me, "you need to know what's happened before you talk to her." I nodded. He lowered his voice, "Keiko-sama's been killed."
"What?" My voice was hard. I'm pure Black Honey now.
Tachibana leaned forward and whispered a quick summary.
Dead? "That doesn't make any sense."
"We're working on getting more information."
She collapsed in my arms crying as soon as I sat down next to her. "Keiko's…Keiko's…Keiko's…gone," she managed to get out in between gasps for air and sobs.
I looked down at the most precious thing in my life. My Cho-chan. Sitting in my lap and sobbing out pure grief. We can't stay here.
"We're going to my apartment."
Tama-chan stood and picked up his bookbag, "That's a good idea, Honey."
"Not you, Tama-chan. Just Cho-chan and me. She needs to rest. We need to find out more. She needs quiet."
"But Honey, we need to tell everyone."
"No. Everyone's coming after classes for the study session. We'll tell them then. They don't need to know before." I looked over at Ootori, "Explain it to him." Then I scooped up Cho-chan and started to head for my limo, both our details following us.
Ootori stopped us, "I still have BOS officers in San Francisco. I can send them to the police station. They'll report back to Tachibana. He can be the point person for all our families."
"Bring him to the apartment after classes."

Lunch, Sugahara Security Command Center, Tokyo:
Kuwamoto-san'd just hung up with the American lawyer when Aoyama-san slowly walked in. He headed straight for the table and with a huge sigh sank into his chair.
"Coffee." His assistant placed a cup in front of him. He sat there hunched over the table, cradling that cup for several moments. Then with another sigh, he drank it all in one go and turned to me, "We found your mother in Keiko-sama's room curled up in her bed, asleep."
At least they found her quickly. We were all so wrapped up in the phone call, we never noticed her leaving. We should have been watching her closer. The doctor warned us she'd be loopy from the drugs he gave her. Still, loopy's better than hysterical.
"Masaji-sama's calling Mei-sama now and explaining everything." He leaned back and rubbed his eyes, "What a mess."
What an understatement.
"The doctor and her assistant put her to bed. They're going to stay with her."
Good. They can babysit Mother so Father and I can…can what? There's nothing to do from here except get small snippets of information at a snail's pace. Maybe I should go to California.
I could hear Father's voice in the hallway getting closer, "Thanks Mei-san. We'll keep everyone updated through their security."
He was on the phone when he walked in. "I appreciate it. We'll let you know. Thank you."
With that, he hung up, tossed his phone on the table, and started walking around the room. "Nomura's security had already told her the basics. Apparently, they're taking her back to Mitsukuni-sama's apartment. The rest of the kids will be there after classes for a weekly study session. They'll be told then."
"By whom?" Aoyama-san asked. He'd started another cup of coffee.
"What?"
"Who's going to tell them?"
"That's what we need to figure out. We need to inform all the families' security and one of them will. I doubt Nomura will be in any kind of shape to do it."
"Tachibana."
"Ootori's head?"
"He's already been in touch, offering any assistance the Black Onion Squad can give. He volunteered to be the contact between us and the rest of them."
"Fine. Keep him informed."

Early Afternoon, Japanese Politics Class, Todi:
I think I managed to reign in Tamaki. Took some fast talking, but I convinced him to wait until the group gathered. Not sure what Mori-senpai and the rest of the group going to say when I show up, but Tachibana's acting as the go-between and will be there to give them the details…those that are known by then anyway.
I still don't understand what happened.
It doesn't make sense. He asked her out, and she said no. That's it? And he killed her for it? What the fuck?
She should have had Ootori protection. She was a new employee. If she had had a BOS detail this wouldn't have happened.
If I hadn't left.
I closed my eyes and remembered the last time I saw her. Right before Cho and I flew back. We were eating brunch, and she was smiling.
.
xXx
.
Early Afternoon, Todi Campus:
Kyoya's wrong. Just wrong.
Everyone needs to be told. Cho needs us all right now.
And Keiko wasn't just her best friend, she was everyone's friend.
I don't like knowing and not telling everyone. It's not fair. It's like when some of us knew things about Haruhi being missing but not others.
"That's it!" Oops. Said that out loud and now everyone's looking at me. At least I'm at the vending machines rather than the library waiting for my next class.
I checked my watch. She's in art history.
I'm texting Renge. She'll know what to do.
.
Tamaki: Need to talk to you. Emergency.
.
Phone call between Tamaki and Renge:
Renge: "What happened? Are you alright? I told Sensei I had a family emergency and had to make a call."
Tamaki: "My darling Renge-chan, something terrible has happened, and I must tell you."
Renge: "Tamaki," I snapped, "stop talking like a fake prince and tell me quickly." It must be bad for him to be sinking back into that persona.
Tamaki: "Keiko's been murdered."
Renge: "What? What did you say?"
Tamaki: "Keiko's dead. She was killed by a classmate."
Renge: "Take a deep breath and tell me everything from the beginning."
Tamaki: "I met Kyoya at his class when it ended…
…he tells her everything he knows, ending with how Honey and Kyoya want to wait to tell everyone…
Renge: Shit. I can't believe she's gone. Poor Cho.
Calm down and focus, Renge. Tamaki needs you. The group needs you. You can fall apart later.
"They're right. We should wait to tell everyone at the apartment. Tachibana will be there, and he can give details and answer questions. If we told everyone now, it would be just as bad as Keiko's mother when she called Cho. They'd be in shock, and we couldn't give them any details."
Tamaki: "I hadn't thought of that." And that's why I called her. She's right. My first reactions aren't always the right ones.
Renge: "I'm glad you called."
Tamaki: "Me, too."
Renge: "I should get back to class before Yuki and Haruhi start to worry. And you need to get to your class. It's starting soon."
Tamaki: "Alright. I'm coming directly to the apartment as soon as it's over."
Renge: "I'll see you there."
Tamaki: "I love you, Renge-chan."
Renge: "I love you, too, Tamaki-kun."
.
Now how am I going to go back in there and act like nothing's wrong?
.
xXx
.
Afternoon, Sugahara Security Command Center:
We were getting another update from the lawyers and guards when my son threw his pen on the table and scrubbed his hand through his hair, "I'm going to California."
"Shigeru?"
"I'm serious, Father. We can't just sit here. Someone from the family needs to go. You have those meetings about that acquisition on Friday. You can't miss them. And Mother's in no shape to go anywhere. Hell, she can't even think clearly." He picked up his phone, "I'll get the jet ready and leave in a couple of hours."
He's got a point. Having someone from the family there will ease legal issues and maybe get answers the American lawyers can't. And Yoko's definitely not in any condition to make any decisions right now.
"Fine. But not alone." I looked around the table and made a quick assessment. "Take Kuwamoto-san and Tsujimoto." Kuwamoto can help with all the legal mess and my assistant can make all the arrangements.
I looked at my son over the tops of my glasses, "Bring your sister home."
"Yes, Father."

After Classes, Mori/Honey Apartment:
Only the third day of classes and I already feel behind. Taking that semester off to train and compete seems to have dulled my study skills. Principles of microeconomics will be difficult. It has the most reading by far, including many, many case studies.
I was surprised to find Ootori in my Japanese politics class. Fortunately, he has the good sense not to talk to me. He hasn't even acknowledged me, and I hope it stays that way.
I walked into our library and didn't see anyone else's books. Looks like I'm the first here. I dropped my things on the desk I share with Haruhi and headed to change. I have almost an hour before she arrives, so I'll meditate.
.
Kyoya and Tachibana were just getting to the apartment door when my elevator arrived. "Don't bother ringing, I have the code," I said and punched it in.
"Morinozuka security gave you a code to the apartment, Tamaki?"
"It's my personal code. We all have one. It's only good for Wednesday afternoons, but I assume Haruhi's and Cho's are good anytime."
Yamada-san met us in the entry, "Ootori-sama, Tachibana-san, I suggest you wait with me in the security offices for everyone to arrive." He pointed down a hallway, and they headed that way. "Tamaki-sama, none of the Ouran students have arrived yet, though they should be here soon."
"I'll wait in the library."
Mori was reading when I walked in, but only looked up and nodded. I don't think he knows. Should I tell him? No, Kyoya said no, and Renge-chan agreed.
I pulled out my political communications text and leafed through it.
Fifteen minutes later, Haruhi, Yuki, Satoshi, Chika, the twins, and Renge-chan came in. Everyone but my darling fiancée dropped their things and went to change out of their uniforms. Renge-chan gestured for me to follow and left the room.
"Anything new?"
"No. I rode over in my own limo, so I haven't had a chance to talk to Tachibana."
"Are Cho and Honey here?"
"I assume so. I haven't seen them."
"Alright. I'll go change and come right back."
With a quick kiss, she headed for Haruhi's guest room where the girls change.
.
"That biology test is next week, you crazy chick."
"I'm aware," I smirked as I entered my code. Security sends a new one-time use code every week to Kono.
"You said you were going to tell me how you cheated before the next one."
"And I will." We headed to the bathroom off the living area to change, "But not with everyone else around. Tonight."
"I can think of better things to do tonight, Bu."
"Yeah, but will they help you pass biology?"
.
Something's wrong, but I can't put my finger on it. Tamaki keeps flipping pages too quickly to be reading, and Renge keeps looking up at the door.
Looking around, I could tell Haruhi feels it too. And our yakuza couple don't seem to be able to settle.
As soon as Akito-kun walked in, I felt a huge knot in my stomach let go. I didn't even realize it was there.
He grabbed a bottle of water and sat down next to me, "Where are Honey and Cho?"
"Haven't seen them yet."
He pulled out a book that must have been ten centimeters [~4 inches] thick. Management of PTSD and Related Disorders. Yuck. I opened my latest Vampire Knight fan fiction chapter and started rereading it.
.
"That's everyone," I said, standing up and finishing my tea. "I'll go get Mitsukuni-sama and Cho-sama." I turned to Ootori-sama and Tachibana, "I suggest you wait until we get to the library before you come in."
"Of course."
I could tell from his tone he understood. Mitsukuni-sama might have invited him, but he practically had to if he wanted Tachibana to come.
The room was quiet, so I tapped lightly on the door. Mitsukuni-sama opened it slowly, "Shhh. She's asleep."
"Everyone's here. Should we wake her up?"
"No. Let her sleep." He closed the door behind him, and we went to the library.
.
I'd heard Akito ask Yuki about Mitsukuni and Cho, but it didn't sink in for a few minutes. They should be here. Neither of them had a class after lunch. I assumed they'd meet somewhere to eat then come here. It would be highly inappropriate for them to be in either his room or her guest room.
That's when he walked in without Cho. Followed directly by Ootori and Tachibana.
Something is very wrong.
My eyes darted to Hikaru to see how he'd react to Ootori being here. Just as he took a deep breath to start complaining, Mitsukuni cut him off, "I want to thank Kyoya and Tachibana for coming." No sign of flowers, no smile. He's pure black.
Hikaru dropped back in his seat with a thunk, and Mitsukuni continued, "There's been a security event in California…" Keiko? "Keiko-chan was murdered early this morning."
What?
.
Yuki-chan gasped and grabbed my arm tight, her nails digging into my skin through my shirt. "Murdered?" It was barely a whisper.
Dammit. They should have told me before they just threw it out there. I'm training to be a psychiatrist. I could have helped them do it better.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" Shinobu practically screamed. "How? Who? Are they dead too? Her security better have killed them."
"Bu," Ritsu reached out and grabbed her knee. Their eyes met, and they had a silent conversation. In less than two seconds, they both turned back to Honey, waiting for more.
Haruhi's hands were clasped at her chest, her face in total shock. Mori rolled his chair over to her so he could put his arm around her.
"Where's Cho?" Renge's not surprised. I can tell by her eyes. Neither is Tamaki. They knew…
"Sleeping in her room. She's had quite a shock."
"No shit," Hikaru grumbled.
"Tachibana has all the currently available details. He's acting as liaison between Keiko-chan's family and us."
That explains their presence. Kyoya looks like death. Pale, red eyes. I knew they both went to Stanford, but I didn't think they were close.
Tachibana cleared his throat and stepped out in front of everyone, "Keiko-sama was having lunch with a classmate…"
.
I listened to what I already knew, my stomach in knots and my brain in a fog.
Keiko's gone. She's dead.
It doesn't seem real.
How many times have I thought that in the last three hours?
Too many to count.
She never said anything about that guy. Never even mentioned him beyond talking about the class project they were doing.
Would she have told me is she was concerned? Maybe not, but she would have told her security.
"It's almost one this morning in California right now." Tachibana looked up from his watch, "Mr. Harrigan has been arrested and now charged with murder. His arrangement is later today. The Sugahara family has retained American lawyers. They are working with prosecutors and will be asking for no bail and are expected to get it."
"Where's Keiko?" Yuki choked out while wiping her face with Akito's handkerchief.
"The morgue with the coroner."
.
I can't breathe. My chest is so fucking tight it feels like something's trying to claw its way out.
"What…" I coughed hard and tried again, "What can we do? There has to be something? Are we supposed to just sit here?"
I can't just sit here again.
I had to sit when Haruhi was missing after that bomb. I had to sit when Haruhi was kidnapped. I had to sit when Shinobu was kidnapped.
"Hika," Kaoru tried to say something, but I just shouted louder.
"I can't just sit here."
"I received a call right before I came in here. Keiko-sama's brother, Shigeru-sama, the family lawyer, and her father's assistant are flying out within the next hour or so. They'll handle everything that needs to be done and bring her back as soon as they are able."
"That doesn't answer my fucking question."
"Unfortunately," Akito spoke up, "there really isn't much any of us can do except comfort each other and grieve."
"Well," I slammed my fists on the table, "that fucking sucks."
"Yes, it does."
.
I couldn't hold her back anymore, and Bu let loose, "What does her security say about letting her get killed in front of them? What kind of incompetent dickheads does she have guarding her anyway?"
Gotta admit, I'm wondering the same thing and with Tachibana here, now's the best time to ask.
He took a deep breath and looked around the room before focusing on her, "I've had a long discussion with her detail head, Tanabe-san. He's been through BOS protection training." Bu snorted so hard I worried she'd hurt her eye again. "So, I knew there must be extenuating circumstances."
He shifted slightly from one foot to the other, but no one was going to offer him a seat. He'd never take it. "Before I go into what he said, I need you all to realize Mr. Harrigan was a classmate. Tanabe-san and his team saw him as that. It's similar to how any of your details view any of your classmates when they are around you. The idea that someone in Ouran's dining hall could pick up a knife and stab one of you isn't on our radar. And Keiko-sama never said anything to her team about him. Nothing to indicate she was concerned. Nothing about him ever saying something that felt 'off'.
"Tanabe-san told me that they'd studied together many times including going out to meals at least one of which was at that restaurant. Nothing in his behavior indicated he might do something like that."
"But her team didn't hear everything they said to each other."
"No. None of us hears everything said between our primary and the people they interact with. We have to rely on you to let us know if something's wrong. If someone gives you an odd feeling. If someone says something that makes you uncomfortable. She never said anything to her team. Nothing. She saw him as a classmate and a casual friend, and that's how her team saw him."
"Well, fuck," Bu leaned back in her seat and popped her neck. She needs a massage. "She must not have picked up on him."
"Her team never saw any red flags until he raised his voice and picked up that knife. And by then it was too late."
.
By this time, Takashi's fingers combing through my hair had taken the anger away and left me hollow.
How many things can one person go through before it's too many things? It's incredibly selfish, but I feel like I was just getting my feet under me again after what happened and now this.
Poor Cho. She's got to be devastated. I know how it feels to lose someone close to me, and although Keiko wasn't a family member, she was her best friend. And sometimes a best friend is closer than family.
Honey stood up, "Thank you, Kyoya, Tachibana. You both are welcome to stay for dinner and keep us updated."
"Thank you, Honey-senpai."
They started for the door, but Honey called them back, "You can stay here in the library if you wish."
"Thank you again," and they chose the table furthest from the rest of us while Honey left mumbling something about checking on Cho.
Tamaki might be the only other person here that could see the anguish behind Kyoya-senpai's eyes. He and Keiko must have spent more time together in California than any of us realized.
.
I told Tamaki-kun that I was going to check on Cho, and I followed Honey to her guest room.
We found her sitting up in bed, huge tears slowly running down her cheeks. "Keiko's really gone, isn't she?"
We climbed in on either side of her, Honey putting his arm around her shoulders, "I'm so sorry, Cho-chan." I just reached out and took her hand.
"What happened?"
"She was having lunch with someone named Joshua from her class…"
"I met him. Seemed nice." She shook her head slightly, "Little weird, but…"
"Cho-chan," his arm tightened around her, "he killed her."
"Joshua? No, that's not right." She sounds drugged…like she's far away.
Honey caught my eyes over her head, pleading with me to help. I took over, "From what the police can piece together from what he and the witnesses said, he got angry when she said she wouldn't go out with him, so he stabbed her right there at the restaurant table."
"But…"
She took a deep, shaking breath, "But that means she…"
She tried again, "She was killed because she wouldn't go out on a date with him?"
"That's what he's saying."
"That's…that's…that's just…stupid," she finally managed to get out between new sobs.
Honey pulled her tighter while I rubbed her arm.
I sort of know how she feels, but when Haruhi was missing, there was hope we'd get her back. Cho's completely lost her best friend.

After Dinner, Mori/Honey Apartment:
Somehow, we all managed to get through dinner, but I don't remember much of it. Fortunately, our housekeeper had made the dinner delivery arrangements yesterday.
Everyone's on autopilot, and we haven't seen Mitsukuni since Tachibana finished his briefing. He and Cho ate in her room. Renge came back from Cho's room after about an hour, and we all tried to study, but I don't think anyone actually did.
Now we're in the living area, all sitting around on the sofa, some on phones, some just staring at the walls. Haruhi and Renge are standing by the window whispering quietly. The'd talked to Cho's mother and decided that since Cho didn't want to leave Mitsukuni, her mother would come over here to stay the night. Renge and Haruhi's maids were sending overnight bags so they could stay in Haruhi's room just in case Cho might need them.
Once Cho-san arrives, I decided I was going to ask everyone else to leave. Aside from probably Cho, we all will be going to classes tomorrow and need our sleep.
That is…if we can get to sleep.

Night, Plane from Tokyo to San Francisco:
"We'll be landing around noon their time, four yours, Father. I'll call you around nine your time tomorrow."
I hung up and reclined the seat back. I need to get as much sleep possible, but I don't see it happening. At least not naturally. The pill the doctor gave me doesn't look that powerful sitting in my hand.
Fuck it. I swallowed it down with a bottle of water and pulled the blanket up tight.
I remember when she was born. I'd just turned seven. Our parents never really spent much time with us as kids, so I wasn't jealous. She had her nanny, I had mine. But it was fun to have a little sister. Someone to tease at the dinner table.
And now she's gone. I won't hear that laugh again or see those eyes shining.
All because some…boy couldn't handle being told no.
What the fuck is wrong with the world?
.
"I think that's all we can do until it's business hours in California."
"Run the list again to be sure."
"You're handling all the legal issues. You and Shigeru-sama will head directly to the coroner when we arrive. Keiko-sama's guards and the American lawyers will meet you there.
"About two hours before we land, I'll start making calls to Stanford to get any administrative issues settled. Depending on the schedule, Shigeru-sama might meet me at her dorm to help pack. I'll make arrangements to have all her belongings shipped back."
"Sounds like we have it covered for now. Let's get some sleep."

Thursday, October 27:
Midnight, Tokyo Time (8am CA Time, Wed.), Restaurant, Stanford:
"I assume it's useless to tell you to stop beating yourself up about it, Kohima."
Damn right, it is. I held my primary as she died in my arms. I saw it the moment it happened. Her eyes dimmed, and she was just…gone.
"Kohima?"
I looked up across the table at Tanabe. "How can you even ask me that?"
"I have no fucking idea," he dropped his head in his hands. "It's not like I've stopped doing the same thing. Not even once."
It never even occurred to us that we had to worry about a classmate doing that. Someone she's been studying with for weeks. Someone who gave us no indication. Gave her no indication.
"I don't understand how we didn't see it coming."
I shrugged and finished my coffee, "She didn't either. He was just a classmate. It's not like we could keep her in a bulletproof glass box or something."
"Maybe we should have."
That's when one of the American lawyers cleared their throat. Damn, we've been speaking Japanese this whole time, and they look really confused. We're supposed to be planning our day and discussing how to work with the police detective. "It's almost time for our meeting."

Morning, Mori/Honey Apartment:
A drop of blood hit the side of the sink and slowly made a red trail down to the drain.
I haven't nicked myself shaving in forever.
Keiko's gone.
We were good friends once. I remember the New Year's Eve ball when she told me to kiss Haruhi. When she told me Haruhi thought that way about me. How when we danced at the On Okuri Ball, she congratulated us on finally getting together. And she was truly happy for us.
I hadn't really talked to her since that picnic at the twins before that. Before she left for Stanford. I barely spoke to her in St. Louis. Just accepting her congratulations on my win.
I should have stayed in touch. But I let us drift apart. And now it's too late…
.
"Breakfast is delicious, Mitsukuni-kun. Thank you."
"You're welcome, Mie-san."
I woke up early to check on Cho-chan, but her mother wouldn't let me in the room. She didn't sleep well last night, and she didn't want to wake her. So, the two of us are eating breakfast alone.
"Do you know when her first class is today?"
"Technical writing at ten, nutrition at eleven, and portfolio management with me at two."
"And yours?"
"Eleven, one, and two."
"Do you think she should try to go to classes today?"
Do I? I'm not sure. "Well, it could help take her mind off it, but she might still be in too much shock. Maybe just the one we have together? We won't know until she wakes up."
"And I want her to sleep as much as possible and wake up when she's ready."
I must be strong for Cho-chan.
I've never lost anyone close to me. My grandparents died when I was too young to remember, so I guess Ranka's the only person I knew and cared about that's died that I do remember. And that was horrible. I don't want to think about what it would be like to lose Takashi.
I'll do whatever I can to help her through this. If it means cutting classes or missing business meetings, I'll do it. Whatever. She's going to be my wife. We're going to spend forever together. If she needs me, I'm there.
"Are you going to classes?"
I checked my watch, "I have almost two hours before I must decide. If she's not awake yet, I'll stay. If she's awake, we'll figure it out together."
"I'd like to take her home when she wakes up. She can either get ready for classes at home or rest there. You're welcome to come with and even stay the night tonight if you wish."
"Thank you, Mie-san. I appreciate it."
.
Keiko's gone.
My best friend is gone.
I need her. I need to talk to her. How can I get through this without her?
After yesterday, I didn't think I'd have tears left, but here I am sobbing into the pillow so Mother and Honey-kun don't hear.
I know they want to help, but they can't. No one can.
She's gone.

Morning, Phone call between Hikaru and his Doctor:
Hikaru: I didn't even let him say hello. "Keiko's dead."
Doctor: That's the girl in California that's a year ahead of him. "How?"
Hikaru: "Fucking told a guy no. Told that asshole she didn't want to go out with him. Said no. He fucking stabbed her in the middle of the fucking restaurant. Right there! She died right there!"
Doctor: I googled quickly and found lots of articles in English. Just a few in Japanese. The press must have just connected the dots. "I'm sorry, Hikaru."
Hikaru: "Sorry! You're sorry! That's all you can say? That you're fucking sorry!"
Doctor: He didn't know her that well, so what's got him this agitated? "What would you like me to say?"
Hikaru: "I don't know." I tried counting. Only made it to three. "How about something that's not stupid. Tell me something I can do."
Doctor: There it is. Helpless. "What is there to do?"
Hikaru: "Fuck if I know. I'm just so fucking tired of not doing anything. Haruhi gets bombed, and I'm told to sit still. Haruhi and Shinobu get kidnapped, and they tell me to study. Anything happens and I'm the last person anyone ever fucking thinks about to help with anything. I'm just fucking sick of not being able to do any damn thing."
Doctor: I think I'll just let him rant. Maybe he'll figure out something on his own.
Hikaru: "Why can't I do anything? Why is there never anything that I can do?"
Doctor: He's practically screaming at me through tears.
Hikaru: "I'm fucking worthless as a friend. I never help any of them. Never. NEVER!"
Doctor: So, not going to figure it out on his own. "That's not true. Not at all true."
Hikaru: "Bullshit."
Doctor: "No. No bullshit. You're a good friend. You support those close to you."
Hikaru: "Yeah, like I supported Haruhi so much I assaulted her."
Doctor: "You need to stop that right now. Hear me? Right now." All I heard was panting. "That happened. You got the help you needed. She's moved past it. She forgave you. You'll never catch her bringing it up again." I know she won't. She's an amazing friend. "You need to stop beating yourself up with it. You need to stop defining yourself by that one act. Define yourself by how you responded. How you got better. How she's so close now she's practically your sister. That's what you did for your friends. You got better. You are staying better. You are getting better every day.
"And that's a huge fucking thing to do for your friends."
Hikaru: "It's not enough."
Doctor: "It's more than enough…"
We kept at it for another few minutes then decided on an in-person appointment that afternoon.

Morning, Dining Room, Shino Estate:
I stood outside the door, taking a couple deep breaths. Fuyumi's so pregnant and Sota-kun's so young. Neither of them needs to worry about me.
I didn't just lose my best friend.
I wish I'd insisted on staying over at the apartment last night, but Haruhi and Renge looked like they had it under control. And I'm not sure Cho even talked to them. I would have stayed for selfish reasons. Because I needed to. That wouldn't have helped Cho.
The simple truth is that Cho needs support, and I don't.
I squared my shoulders and walked in for breakfast.
"Good morning, Yuki-chan!"
"Good morning, Sota. Fuyumi."
"Are you ready for this afternoon?"
"This afternoon?"
"The photographer? Aren't you meeting him for a lesson?"
"Oh. Yes. After classes."
Photographer.
Doesn't seem as important as it did before. Not as exciting. Like the whole idea is gray.

.
Breakfast, Dining Room, Haninozuka Estate:
"Good morning, Yasuchika. How are you doing?"
Mother's morning sickness must have already happened or it's not bad today. She's got a full plate in front of her and is already digging in. Good. The baby needs to eat.
"I'm fine, but how are you and the baby doing? Hearing that news couldn't have been good for either of you."
Not sure what that funny look is for. "We're both fine. Nothing to worry about."
Nothing to worry about.
There are about a million things that can go wrong in a pregnancy, especially if the mother is over forty, and she says she has nothing to worry about.
Cutting into my fish, I realized it was, "Swordfish! You can't have swordfish, Mother. It's bad for the baby."
I was on my feet, leaning over to grab her plate when she slapped my hand. "Yours is swordfish, Chika. Mine is salmon. It's perfectly fine. Sit down and finish your breakfast."
Looking closer, I could see the pink flesh. Definitely salmon. But should the chef be preparing them both in the same kitchen?

.
Breakfast, Dining Room, Hitachiin Estate:
"Where's your brother?"
"Calling his doctor."
I slipped into my seat and picked at my fish. I'm not hungry.
Hika tossed and turned most of last night. Was surprised when he wanted to sleep in my room but couldn't turn him down. Not after what just happened. But he kept us both awake almost all night.
Kept mumbling about how he can't do anything. How he's worthless.
As soon as the alarm went off, I dialed his doctor and handed him the phone. Is he getting worse, or is this just a dip in his healing?
"I'm sorry about Keiko, Kaoru. I know you'll miss her."
But will I? She's barely been around lately. I saw her at the ball and the Olympics, but before that, I hadn't seen her since she left. I designed a couple dresses for her, but beyond that, we hardly knew each other.
"Whatever," I shoved my plate aside and headed out. "Tell Hika I already left for Ouran."
.

.
Before Classes, Haruhi's SUV, Headed for Ouran:
"Do you think the Chairwoman will make an announcement?"
Renge didn't answer, so I turned away from the window to see if she heard me. Her eyes were locked on the SUV floor, her coffee travel mug shaking in her hands.
"Renge?"
She started slightly and looked up at me. She's been crying. I'm not surprised. I lost it in the shower this morning. "What?"
"Will the Chairwoman make an announcement?"
"Not necessary. It made the morning news."
She looked back at the floor, and I looked back out the window.
I didn't really know Keiko that well. We were friends, but not very close. We hadn't even kept in touch since she left, just getting together when she came back or in St. Louis.
But I know Cho talked to her almost every day. They texted and emailed and Zoomed all the time. They'd known each other since they were kids.
Everyone grieves differently. I'll just have to be sure she knows I'm here for whatever she needs, no matter what.
.
I'm a horrible person.
I can't even focus on Keiko or Cho.
I keep thinking about Haruhi. How I almost lost my best friend to kidnappers. Because of Shinobu.
I keep thinking about how I could be Cho right now. Lost, grieving. Without a maid of honor. Without a best friend.
Before I realized what I was doing, I'd dropped my coffee and launched myself at Haruhi. I squeezed her so tight…
"I love you, Haruhi. You're my best friend."
She hugged back just as tight, "I love you, too, Renge."

Before Classes, Himura SUV, Headed for Ouran:
"I don't fucking believe this," Bu growled, glaring at her laptop.
"What?"
"Apparently," she looked up, and I almost flinched at the anger in her eyes. Damn good thing it's not directed at me, "this kind of shit happens a lot in America."
"What? Restaurant stabbings?"
I said it to break the tension. It worked. A little.
She rolled her eyes, "No, Asshole. Men beating or killing women for rejecting them."
"You're shitting me."
"Nope. Quick search and I found dozens of examples. Stabbing, punching, strangling, beating, you name it. Just because they said they weren't interested. Just for being told 'no'." She slammed the lid shut, "And it's not just women. Shit happens to young girls, too."
"Fucking disgusting."
"No shit."
I leaned back and thought for a minute. "You have any or know anyone that has any contacts in the California prison system?"
"No. Why?"
"Because as soon as that dickhead's convicted and put behind bars, I think his torture should begin. I'm sure we can find someone who'd love to make him their bitch."
"Fucking A."

Before Classes, Morinozuka Limo, Headed for Ouran:
I didn't know Keiko-senpai very well. Really not at all. I don't think I ever even danced with her at the Host Club balls or at the On Okuri ball. It's not that I didn't like her. She was OK. It's just that there was no reason for me to get to know her, so I didn't.
So, I guess it's not that big a deal that I don't feel a huge amount of grief. Yeah, I'm sorry she died. And it was horrific and stupid the way she died. But I just don't feel that affected.
Breakfast was so quiet without Haruhi there. Is that what it would have been like if Haruhi hadn't been rescued? Just me and my parents eating with nothing to say.
That would have…shit, I have no idea how I would have felt.

Before Classes, Ootori Limo, Headed for Medical School Campus:
Should have taken this PTSD course last semester with all the shit that's happened to the group since I've joined them.
I'll need to watch Cho for signs of depression coming through normal grief. Probably should suggest she see someone to help her with this. I know Honey's getting ready to propose, and Keiko would have been her maid of honor. She'll probably always see whoever she chooses now as a second choice.
But she won't be the only person in the group hurting. Honey will be strong for her, but he probably won't know what to do, so he'll feel powerless. And Hikaru will definitely feel that way. He's been hit so many times by things happening to his friends and not being able to do a damn thing to help. Or at least not seeing what he's doing as helping. Not being able to see the small gestures as being enough. He'll need to talk to his doctor. Maybe he should start seeing him in person on a more regular basis. Couldn't hurt.
Kyoya knew her from his time at Stanford. If he's hurting, he'll never let it show.
And Yuki. My Yuki. She'll be worried about making it worse for everyone, so she won't show she's hurting. Cho has the entire group to help her. Yuki has me. I'll need to pay attention.
Just wish this wasn't such a killer semester. Between the classes, my clinical rotations, and different short internships, I'm swamped.
Good thing she met that photographer. That will help her.

First Class, Todi:
"Everyone needs to find a case-study where a new CEO or President coming into a company turned it from near bankruptcy to decent profit margins. The company does not need to be Japanese."
Could I use Honey and Bun Bun's as an example? There's been some articles written about the turn around, but I doubt a formal case study.
Or maybe Kyoya could suggest one.
Kyoya.
I'm so excited to have my best friend back. He's staying in Japan. For good! We even have a class together! We can be study buddies!
I was so shocked when Honey invited him to stay last night…and he did! Kyoya stayed to study and for dinner!
Maybe things will go back to the way they were.
Maybe he'll be part of the group again.
I'm so lucky to have him back!

First Class, 2A, Ouran:
Everyone was so upset last night. Cho was so upset, I never even saw her.
I didn't feel anything.
Keiko wasn't really a friend. I barely knew her.
But still…to feel nothing when told about her being brutely murdered? What kind of monster am I?
I need to talk to someone. Is there anyone I can trust? Someone who won't run away when I tell them this?
Haruhi. I'll talk to Haruhi.
"Chika!" Satoshi hissed at me. I just looked up and glared, "Pay attention or you can't borrow my notes."
What notes? He hardly listens in class anymore.

Mid-Morning, Lecture Hall, Todi:
Why didn't I give her BOS guard protection? I hired her and dumped her on her new boss. No follow through. No security.
I called the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco last night. I'd met with the Consul General many times as I stood up the satellite office, and he owed me a favor or two. He'll be putting his weight behind prosecuting that bastard to the fullest extent of the law. The death penalty is still legal in California, though no one's been executed in seventeen years. He's still going to push for it. If this had happened in Japan, I wouldn't have been satisfied until that fucker was hanged for what he did.
Tachibana can go on and on about 'classmates' and all that bullshit, but it should have never happened.
Keiko should be sitting in her new office learning new things and living the life she wanted.
And to make it even fucking worse, when I stopped by the office last night after leaving the apartment, I found a marriage contract proposal from her father. He didn't want a merger but knew one of his companies could help the Conglomeration. He wanted Keiko to be safe. He used that word. SAFE. He knew she would be married to an Ootori.
Shit.
I might have actually considered a contract with her. I never thought I'd have the luxury of being friends with my arranged bride. Now I never will.
Fuck.
I need a drink.

Author's Note:
And now we get to see everyone find out and feel. I'd hoped to get through the funeral with this chapter, but there's too much going on, and I didn't want to cheat anyone out of their personal grief. So, I ended with one of our roundups to check in with everyone while it's still so raw.
Some will bounce rather quickly. Others not so much. One thing's for sure, there's a hole in everyone's lives that they sure weren't expecting.
Dad and I really wanted Cho to find out the way she did and were having problems with Keiko's mom doing something like that, hence the sedative and her dopy state. Hope it doesn't seem forced. I've never been in a situation where I lost someone unexpectedly like that, so I really have no idea how I'd react.
Kyoya's redemption arc is in full swing, so it makes sense to use Tachibana as the point person between Keiko's family and the rest of them. In my head, Tachibana's probably the best security officer around and could do the job of any family head or even Ogata's. But he stays with Kyoya out of loyalty and because he truly cares for him. I haven't read the manga, so I don't know if that impression is correct or not.
Hope the part that Tachibana said about classmates makes sense. You can't guard against everything. These kids are the elite, but not necessarily assassination targets. Security just didn't have that on their list of possible threats. You can bet this will be rehashed in the security review.
Hope the roundup showed the varying degrees of grief. Poor Kyoya. Couldn't resist that thing with a contract.
.
Next Chapter:
Ogata's moving forward with the security review…More for California…Yuki has her first photography lesson…a photo shoot starts…Cho's lost in grief…Shinobu's second club opens…Chika and Haruhi talk…Kyoya help doesn't help…and the funeral.
