Chapter 39
On Saturday morning, Charles and Terry made sure that they were up early to prepare for Max's visit. Everyone else was fast asleep in their rooms upstairs. Chandler and Monica had been freaking out all week about what they had found out at the doctor's office. Thankfully the other members of their group had managed to keep them relatively calm so far.
There was a light knock on the front door and Charles went to let in his brother. They walked back into the kitchen where Terry was preparing a pot of coffee and some bagels and cream cheese were set out.
"So what's the plan?" Max asked them.
"We'll go wake up Chandler in a little bit," Charles told him. "We'll tell him everything before the others manage to wake."
"Then you can start-" Terry started.
"Got it," Max nodded as he took the offered cup of coffee.
Chandler and Monica were sleeping soundly as their door opened and Charles and Terry started to approach the couple on the bed. Monica was resting her head on his chest as he had his arms wrapped around her. There was a pregnancy book abandoned nearby.
Terry started to shake Chandler awake and he stretched and looked around. He spotted his dads standing over him as he saw that Monica was sound asleep.
"What's going on?" he mumbled as he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
"We need you downstairs," Charles told him.
"Why?"
"We need to discuss something with you,"
"Can't it wait?" he glanced at his clock.
"We don't want the others to overhear what we want to discuss with you,"
"Fine," Chandler sighed. "I'll meet you down there."
Chandler slowly sat up on the bed as his dads walked out of the room. He looked down as he felt movement beside him and saw Monica slowly sitting up on the bed as well.
"What's going on?" she asked softly.
"My dads want to talk to me," he told her.
"About what?"
"I have no idea," he started off the bed. "But it must be serious if he wants to have this talk early enough so that there's no risk of everyone else hearing it."
"I'll come down with you," she followed him.
"You can get some more sleep. I'll just tell you about it afterwards."
"I'm coming," she stated. "No arguments."
"No arguments from me," he smiled as she followed him out of their room and down the stairs.
When they reached the kitchen, they spotted Terry and Charles brewing up a pot of coffee, and Max standing nearby.
"Uncle Max?" Chandler rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"I told you I was coming today," Max replied.
"I thought that would be during daylight hours. And where's Aunt Sherrie, James, and Jenna."
"They're coming later," Max informed him. "Your dads asked me to come earlier so that I could help them talk to you about something."
"Talk about what?" Monica spoke up. "I'm here for support."
"Let's sit down," Terry brought coffee over for Chandler and some herbal tea for Monica.
"You're starting to scare me," Chandler stated.
"I am going to just jump right in," Charles told his son. "The others have told us what happened at Ross' birthday. When you guys went to the bowling alley after dinner."
"What do you mean?"
"More specifically, your concerns about your mother once you turn eighteen."
"Oh," Chandler said softly as Monica started to rub his back.
"It is true that once you become an adult we can't renew the restraining order anymore,"
"I know,"
"However," Terry spoke up. "If you are not comfortable having her in your life still, you can fill out a new restraining order before you are eighteen so that it will remain in effect."
"Seriously?" Chandler looked at them. "I can do that?"
"If you want to," Max cut in. "We can do it this morning if you want to. Your dads' friend Tom is waiting to hear from us. Whether you want to do this."
"So what do you want to do?" Monica asked him and he looked over at her.
"I told myself back then that I would never have anything to do with Nora for the rest of my life," he said softly.
"So are we doing this?" Max asked him.
"Yes," Chandler glanced at all of them.
"So why don't you go up and get changed and ready, and I will take you to the police station so that we can get this taken care of as soon as possible."
"I will be going too," Monica told him.
"Of course," Max smiled at her as both Chandler and Monica left the table and started back upstairs.
"Do you mind if I take them out somewhere afterwards?" Max looked at his brother. "You know he's going to be in a funk."
"That's fine," Charles told him. "You always seem to get him out of his funk."
"We're ready," Monica announced as they came back down to them.
"That was fast," Max stood up.
"I want to get this over with fast," Chandler told him.
"Alright," Max went to them and they all headed outside to Max's car.
Chandler and Monica were sitting in a private room at the precinct waiting for Tom to come in with the paperwork. Max was out in the waiting area. When they were informed that no one would be able to accompany Chandler, Monica put up a fight. Stating that as his wife she had a right to be there to support her husband. No one tried to stop her so she followed Chandler to the designated room as they waited.
"Here we go," the door opened and Tom came in with a clipboard of papers. "If anything confuses you, I can help you."
"Thanks," Chandler mumbled as he took the pen and took the cipboard. "I'm putting Monica onto it as well. Just in case."
"I was going to suggest that you do since you are married," Tom told him.
"Fine with me," Monica assured him. "Especially with the babies."
"Can we put the babies on it?" Chandler asked.
"Not until they're born," Tom said. "Congratulations by the way. Your dad told me that you're having twins when he called me about this."
"Thank you," Monica smiled at him. "It suddenly doesn't seem like such a big deal. Not with all this going on."
"Focus on the good right now," Tom told them both as Chandler continued to fill out the paperwork.
Ross had gone to pick up Carol that morning and they drove over to Chandler's. They pulled in and saw Chandler's aunt's car. They climbed out of the car and started into the front door of the house as they were greeted by James and Jenna running around the house. They found the rest of the occupants of the house along with Sherrie in the kitchen.
"Hey," Phoebe greeted. "You guys are early."
"I needed out of the house," Ross told them. "My parents have both been on me about telling them anything about Monica."
"Do they know about the twins yet?" Charles asked.
"Nope," Ross shook his head.
"Well Chandler and Monica aren't here," Joey said. "So we could get started without them, but if I remember correctly, Monica will just change whatever we do."
"She will," Ross agreed.
"Where are Monica and Chandler?" Carol asked. "And Max?"
"Max came early so he could take Chandler to the police station," Sherrie told them. "Monica went along to support him."
"Why are they at the police station?" Ross asked.
"We had a talk with Chandler this morning before everyone woke up," Terry told them all. "Addressed what you guys told us about what happened at your birthday at the bowling alley. Long story short, Chandler is filling out his own restraining order against his mother and her boyfriend. Hopefully it will go into effect by the time he turns eighteen."
"Max will probably take them out to breakfast afterwards," Sherrie said. "I'm sure you all know that certain situations will pull Chandler into a funk."
"We've noticed," Phoebe stated.
"We can at least get all the things that they have already purchased," Carol told them. "And put together the things that need to be assembled."
"There's a crib in the back of my car," Sherrie told them, getting a look from both Charles and Terry. "What? It's our present for them. We purchased it before they found out that it was twins. We ordered a matching one after they told us. It's being delivered here."
"Come on, let's get started." Phoebe told them all and the teenagers headed upstairs with James and Jenna following, while Charles and Terry went to get the crib box out of the back of Sherrie's car.
Chandler and Monica sat at the small table at the coffee shop while Max went to get their order. Chandler needed some much needed time away from the house for a little bit longer. He was quieter than normal when filling out the paperwork, and hadn't spoken a word since they both rejoined Max in the lobby of the police station.
"Here we go," Max brought all their drinks and snacks over to the table. "Now please say something kid."
"Is she really back with him?" Chandler asked suddenly.
"What?"
"Is-Nora-really back with the guy who abused me and landed me in the hospital?"
"According to your dad's private investigator," Max said slowly. "How'd you find out?"
"We overheard his dads talking about it," Monica spoke up. "We decided not to say anything unless they did."
"If you're that concerned, just ask them about it. They'll be truthful with you."
"I guess,"
"So what's the next blog about?" Max changed the subject.
"What?" Chandler looked back at him.
"We read your last one about the origins of your relationship. What's next?"
"The night the babies were conceived," Monica told him. "I'm going to be co-writing it with him. It's from both of our perspectives."
"Interesting," Max took a long drink of his iced coffee.
The trio spent the next couple of hours at the coffee shop until Chandler decided that it was time to head back to the house. They piled back into Max's car and head back. Max pulled into the driveway as he spotted his wife's car.
"Ross is here," Chandler stated as he saw his car as well. "Which means that Carol is most likely also hear."
"Let's see what kind of damage your cousins are making," Max told them as they all headed into the house.
"We saw you pull in from upstairs," Joey came down to them as they walked in the front door. " Come on upstairs. We decided to get some of the things set up in the nursery. We already know that you're going to change it anyway."
Chandler and Monica followed him up the stiars and into the room next to their bedroom. The room was in disarray with all the things that were stashed in their closet laying in the middle of the floor. They were all reading through some instructions as there were wood pieces spread all around them.
"Is that-a crib?" Monica asked as they sat down with them.
"Our present to you," Max told them. "There's another one on the way."
"And I brought you guys all the books I read during my pregnancy," Sherrie told them. "And I have the twins' old clothes, toys, and books. You can keep what you want. I also have all kinds of resources for you to contact if you would like to."
"Thank you," Chandler told her as they started to help put the crib together.
