A wild Poliwhirl was chilling with its whole front floating atop the surface of a small creek that ran through the woods. As it was on the verge of dozing off, it was suddenly hit by a ray and vanished in a flash.
"That's another one." Nathan voiced as he cocked the transporter gun.
"Nice work. That should make for a decent number in this area as well." Keith noted.
Mightyena sniffed the air around them, trying to catch any foreign whiffs around them. "(Nothing around here, either. All clear!)" she barked, wagging her tail. The perk in her barking caught her Trainer's attention.
"What's that?" He turned back ahead. "Hey, Nathan. I believe that's we're clear now."
Nathan scanned the area – since he could actually use his eyes – and verified that he was right. Not seeing any signs of rustling or any movements of anything in the underbrush or riverbank, he clicked his tongue. "Guess that'll work for now."
"We've been going at this for some time now. What do you say we head back to get some rest?"
"Alright…" Just when he was about to agree, Nathan noticed something shimmering in the water. He furrowed his brow and slowly drew closer towards the water's edge.
Hearing his footsteps fade, Keith frowned. "Nathan?"
The Hoenn native sauntered over until he was right up to the water's edge. He peered down at something that was at the shallow bottom. His eyes widened at the object that seemed out of place.
"Is that…?"
Evan was sound asleep on his side, his beanie making for a makeshift sleeping mask. He found himself stirred awake, turning onto his back with a soft inhale of fresh morning air.
'What time is it…?' Realizing that he was awake, he curled his beanie over his forehead. He saw the draped that made his and Freya's treehouse were still fairly dark, but not to where it was hard to see outside. It was barely morning.
He looked over to Freya, who was on her side facing away, sound asleep. Unlike him, it looked like she wasn't getting up anytime soon, and he couldn't blame her. 'Still gonna be sore for a while…'
Even though he was sore himself, he still had a bladder to empty. He silently exited his bed, being mindful to be quiet so as not to wake his roommate. Once he stepped out into the open, he immediately felt how cool and crisp the air felt.
He inhaled again, exhaling the purified breath he just took in. "Gotta love mornings…hm?" A faint sound was heard close by. "What's that at this hour…? Is Corrin training this early…?"
The sound of thrusts and swinging was heard. He was around weapons long enough to know that it was a blade. That much he was certain. He noticed that it was coming from the central area of the fortress' courtyard. He kept quiet and snuck around the tree, making sure to be ready to spur back around if the situation called for it. However, he was met with something else.
"Hrah! Heh! Ha!" Grunting low in the open was none other than Hana, one of Sakura's retainers if Evan recalled correctly. She was holding her katana in her hands, striking poses and slashing at the air with precision. Her strikes were sharp, sharp enough that the few blades of grass growing between the cement were trimmed just from being sheathed back.
She repeated some of the strike poses in succession. She needed to be faster. Stronger. Better than she was yesterday. She couldn't let anything happen to Sakura after all. She needed to hone her skills and sharpen her blade through discipline!
After a series of slashes, the retainer exhaled, relaxing her body. "…right, again!"
Evan watched her train from afar, fixated with wonder. The way she was handling the blade made it seem like she knew what she was doing. 'Does she always get up this early to train?' He looked around once more. 'I'll go another way.'
Choosing to not interrupt her morning routine, Evan circled the long way around the treehouse. He walked so that he was behind Hana as she was facing away. He just needed to make it to the washroom and empty his bladder so he could return to sleeping soundly.
"Hrah!" Hana pivoted and swiped the air behind. Upon realizing she wasn't alone, she immediately struck another poised position. "Halt!"
Realizing he was caught, Evan turned back towards her. "Hey, it's just me."
Hana immediately relaxed. "Oh…you're that Trainer from before. Evan, right?" She sheathed her katana. "My apologies. Wasn't expecting you."
"Oh, don't worry about it. I was just passing through. You know, didn't wanna interrupt you and your training." He replied.
Hana blinked. "I see…well, I appreciate your consideration."
"Yeah, no problem." He was about to part, but he instead found himself drawn to an idea. "So, do you always wake up this early to practice?"
Hana put her hands to her sides, beaming proudly. "Of course! I push myself every morning to train! I won't allow anything to happen to Lady Sakura!"
"You really care that much about her, don't you?" Evan was honest with his question.
Hana nodded. "Yes, I do. She's been my friend for a long time. She's a very kind person who I want nothing less than to be happy." She grinned. "That said, it seems that she really trusts both you and Lord Corrin. So you have my gratitude, Evan!"
The Kanto Trainer shrugged impishly. "Yeah, thanks again for your help. It means a great deal to us. Especially Corrin and me." He meant what he said again. He was generally more at ease now that he didn't have to look over his shoulder as much as he did before. Though, the pressure was still there since he was making a lot of the plans upfront now, but he was perceptive with Pokémon. It couldn't be helped.
His thought process brought him back to his own problems though. Even though he knew he still needed to get stronger, he was barely able to do anything with his shield. He needed to learn how to wield his Killing Edge.
He looked at Hana again, an idea coming to mind. "…hey, Hana."
"Yes?"
"I was wondering. If it's not too much trouble, do you think you can give me pointers on holding a blade? I have one, but I'm not confident in using it, so…"
Hana blinked in surprise. "You want me to train you?"
"At least the basics. I know you're good with a katana, so I figured you'd have some pointers to give out."
"Hm…" She hummed to herself, looking away as if contemplating Evan's request. Even though the Trainer seemed patient, he was anxious on the inside. His reasons for needing some training were understandable, so it wasn't like there was any justification to turning him down.
After a minute of pondering, Hana turned back to him, smiling. "Alright, sure! I can see your resolve! If you need training, then I'll lend you a hand."
"Really?" Evan was genuinely appeased.
"Yes, but…" She frowned with a serious glare. "I take my training very seriously. I will not tolerate any slack. Understand?"
Evan nodded. "I hear ya."
"Good. Then, in return, I would like your help with something."
"Oh…with what?"
Hana lost her poise for a second. She looked down as if mulling about her options, something that Evan was doing a few seconds ago. Though unlike him, she seemed to be more…hesitant?
"I…I would like to request your assistance on helping raise my Machop." She finally answered. "After this last battle, it's clear that I am falling behind. As Lady Sakura's lead retainer, I need to make sure that doesn't happen. And you're the most adequate person I deem fit for the situation. So, if it's not too much trouble…"
Evan looked surprised, but got over it. "Yeah, I can do that. There's a whole outbound of Pokémon around us, and I'm sure Keith and Nathan are bringing over more, so there should be plenty for us to work with."
"Excellent! Then meet me at the south gate after breakfast. We'll start there. Oh…and don't tell Subaki about this. I would like this to be kept away from him."
"Deal." He then just felt the reason why he was out in the first place. "See ya soon." He quickened his pace towards the bathhouse area, looking like he was in a rush.
Hana watched him off before sighing. She honestly wasn't a fan of being under someone's tutelage, but she knew she needed help. She would just have to make certain to take in everything Evan says. For now, she turned back ahead and took another stance to strike the air.
Unbeknownst to the two, they were being watched from afar by Corrin. Unlike Evan who woke up to relieve himself, Corrin woke up by chance. He heard everything and looked away, as if deep in thought about something.
'Evan really wants to get stronger, huh…' He was glad that his friend had a resolve to help him. He appreciated it, too. But that didn't excuse Corrin's own problems. He found himself holding onto the Dragonstone that Azura gave him.
If Evan resolved himself to try new things, so could he. He knew he couldn't rely on the Yato forever. He steeled himself and walked away quietly.
As the morning hours continued their course, the mess hall was gradually filled with the denizens that occupied Corrin's recuperating army. And like all armies, they needed to stay fed.
"Okay, eat your fill guys. There's plenty to go around." Chef DK announced behind the counter filled with plates of various foods. "You've got your crispy waffles, your diced berries, a little bit salted sausage, a little bit of OJ, and sunny-side up eggs with extra pepper. Whatever you guys don't eat goes right to Munchlax's stomach."
While it sounded like a decent breakfast, the food was still a reminder that it was by Chef DK. For example, the waffles were burnt almost entirely, making them more crunchy and hard to swallow if it wasn't for the complimentary maple syrup. The diced sausage was so salty that it was hard to not taste the extra sodium. There was also the eggs, in which – like the waffles – they were almost crispy on the underside. The only saving grace this meal had was the diced berries that helped provide some manner of nutrition. Still, it was better than eating soup made out of sticks and grass.
Felicia rushed over with Corrin's plate. "Here you go!"
"Thank you, Felicia." Corrin thanked his retainer. "Though…you know you didn't really have to."
Felicia smiled. "It's no trouble! I got you extra on yours so you can keep up your strength!"
Corrin looked down at the extra servings of salted meat and burned eggs on his plate. He paused with a straight face. "Er…thanks."
Felicia bowed. "No problem! Now, if you'll excuse me!" She shuffled away impishly, much to the others' worries.
Corrin stared down at his plate again, but despite how he felt about its appeal, he couldn't deny his growling stomach. He picked up a fork and started with the eggs.
"So, Milord, how shall we proceed today?" Gunter politely asked beside him. "Assuming that we are still under the pretense of our recuperation, perhaps a little more rest is in order?"
"Fo', being in bed be good and all dat, but laying about be makingz me stiffs and all." Damon reasoned, before spitting out a small speck of waffle. "Ugh! Man, another crisp almost chokes me! Where's dat damn maple syrup at?!"
"(Right here, man.)" Scraggy passed him a cup of maple syrup.
"Thanks, lil' man." Damon thanked his Pokémon before pouring the sticky, sugary liquid over his food. "Dis sweet like Bluk Berries. I guess it'd be aitz."
Corrin turned towards Gunter. "I thought about it. I think that it would be best that before we plan our next move, we should probably practice a little more so we better understand how to battle."
"A sound move." Kaze agreed.
Subaki harrumphed. "For my ancestors and honor of Lady Sakura, I shall get stronger with my Corvisquire!"
Sakura, while she was in agreement, was still unnerved. "There's still so much to know that we don't understand. There's these little discs that grant these attacks, and these special items, too…"
"Don't worry, we'll all learn together. It's how we'll win over everyone to fight for our cause, I'm certain of it." Corrin assured.
Sakura tightened her hands on her lap, sheepishly nodding. "R-Right! I'll do whatever I can!"
Corrin smiled in appreciation. He thought about what he heard Evan intending to do. He looked over to see him managing to get through his sausage while the rest of his Pokémon were eating their shares. Freya looked just as content, seemingly talking about something.
He paused and thought about his own resolution. He looked around and saw Azura close by, a smile coming to light.
Meanwhile, inside her shrine, Lilith was sound asleep after getting an Oran Berry from Chef DK as part of helping keep her strength up. As she was sleeping soundly, her orb shined brightly, resonating with her.
"Hm? Oh! They're ready!" Lilith was awake and beamed. Her eyes flashed with her orb and readied another transport.
In an instant, a sphere of bright energy fluctuated before vanishing. In place was Keith and Nathan, and Keith's Ditto – who turned into Nathan. The reason being was because it had something of a thick machine-like part that seemed to have a fan inside and inserts.
"Well…that takes the wind right of you." Keith chimed. "You good over there, Nathan?"
"Yeah, I'm just fine." Nathan bluntly answered, looking around. Even though a short while had passed since their previous departure, it still felt like forever since they've been here."
"Seems that we're back in the Astral Planes." Keith continued. "I'll go ahead and deliver our little 'gift' for our doctor. I'm sure he'll be aching for the news."
"I'm sure he would." Nathan had sheer sarcasm in his tone, clearly tired. He went ahead and handed Keith the transporter ray. "Here. Mind if I hot the baths first?"
"Of course. You earned it. Thank you for your cooperation as always, Nathan."
"Yeah, sure thing." Tired, but still sounding appreciative Nathan turned away and started for the bathhouse area, whereas Keith was guided by Ditto towards Poopenschmir's laboratory.
The International Policeman walked over until he found himself in front of the door to the lab. He honestly wished that he could see what it looked like. Must be an interesting place, he figured. He felt for what seemed to be a wall and knocked three times.
The sounds of rummaging was heard from inside. He couldn't make it out, but it sounded like clutters and some buzzing. In a few moments, the door slid open with an exhausted doctor Poopenschmir.
"Yes?" He adjusted his glasses and looked surprised at his guest. "Oh! It's you! How was my invention working out for you?"
Keith smirked. "Worked like a charm, doctor. We've got plenty sent here."
"Oh! I see! Yes! Great job, you two!"
Keith nodded again in thanks before turning towards Ditto. "Also, Nathan found this at the bottom of a creek."
"Hmmm…" Poopenschmir leaned into the device in Ditto's strong arms. He scrutinized closer before his eyes widened with a gasp. "Oh! T-This is…?"
"Is everything alright, doctor?" Keith inquired, catching his worries.
"This…this is…" He sounded like he was on the verge of jumping for joy. "IT IS! IT'S A PIECE OF THE IMMERSIFIER! YES! YES!" He jumped up and down in joy, shaking his wrists frivolously. "Well done! Yes! Very well done! And with this, we are finally one step closer to recreating the device that can fix this paradox!"
Keith smiled. "Glad to be of service, doc. Here's this back as well." He handed him the transporter ray.
"Ah, yes! Thank you." Poopenschmir took a moment to inspect the device. He squinted and leaned into it as he looked at any external damage. He lifted it up and weighed it. "Its frequent use wore it down a lot, but…I think I can retune it!"
"Thanks for the heads up, doc. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll have to retire for now." Keith spoke humbly before turning and walking in the direction of the mess hall. 'Hopefully that chef's gotten better. I'd hate to see Evan getting his stomach pumped…oh wait, I couldn't anyway.'
A giddy Poopenschmir turned back towards his lab, hauling the two devices. "Rotom! Prepare the generators! Papa's got work to do!"
Evan stood just outside the south entrance towards the outskirts of Corrin's castle domain. He stood with his armor on, his shield on his left arm and his Killing Edge strapped to his back. He stood at the base of a tree for cover so he wasn't fully out in the open. Even if he was technically safe, he still had to remind himself that wild Pokémon were still all around. No sense in keeping your guard down.
'We gonna practice my swordsmanship, or battle?' Evan pondered about the order in which they'd be assessing their private training, as how Hana would call it.
Just when he was thinking of their order, he heard footsteps close in. He immediately got on guard, but relaxed when he saw that it was Hana and her Machop out, looking primed for some workouts.
"Good, looks like you're on time!" Hana boasted with a proud smile. "Had you gotten here sooner, I'd have to send you out on a few laps with my sword at your back!"
"Oh, uh…noted." Evan slowly nodded. He didn't want to ask what would happen if he called in sick. Luckily for him, Chef DK's breakfast was tolerable to where he didn't feel as such. "Alright, so what do we start with?"
Hana put her hands to her sides. "I want to make sure that Machop doesn't fall behind anymore than it already is. So let's start with that."
"(Yeah, and can we make this snappy? The sooner we get exercising, the sooner I get stronger!)" Machop roared with determination.
Evan nodded. "Okay, that'll work. So let's start off with the basics first. Do you know much about your Machop?"
Hana blinked in confusion. "Hm? Like what?"
"So, there's eighteen types of Pokémon out there, but we're just gonna focus on the ones related to Machop for now. So Machop is a Fighting-type, which is good because Fighting-types overcome a lot of types out there, but is equally less effective against others."
Hana's eyes widened. She remembered battling those Flying-type Pokémon in the Wind Tribe's Village and how easily her Machop was defeated. It still stung just thinking about it, and it stung more knowing how Subaki shadowed her.
"Fighting-types like Machop are weak to Psychic, Flying, and Fairy-types." Evan continued. "As you remember that, you'll be able to pick and choose your fights easier."
"(I'm not afraid of some twinkle dust and a little wind. That was just a fluke!)" Machop complained.
Hana nodded in understanding. "Then, what about the types that they're effective against?"
"That's a good question. So remember when I said Fighting-types have a lot of advantages? Well, there's five in total. They're strong against Normal, Steel, Ice, Dark, and Rock-types. But their moves are resisted also by a lot too, like the types I mentioned they're weak to. Also, try to avoid Poison and Bug-types if you can help it."
Hana furrowed her brow, humming in deep thought. It was a lot to take in.
"How's about we go out to the fields and I'll help coach, would that be better?" Evan offered.
She immediately perked up. "Yes! Direct battling will do nicely! C'mon, Machop!" Hana trekked towards the fields, with Machop behind. Evan guided them until they were far enough out to where they were able to oversee the numerous occupants of Pokémon that inhabited the grass and wilderness around them.
Just from a glance alone, they could see the numerous Pokémon of shapes and sizes. There were many of one species managing to find solace in groups, while many others had refuge in isolation. Some flew about overhead, and they saw a few fish-like Pokémon jump out of the water.
"So many of these…Pokémon…" Hana's eyes ogled at all of them.
"(Yeah, so many opponents to choose from.)" Machop awed.
'Wow, Keith and Nathan really brought a big number over.' Evan was in awe himself, but he had to remember what they were doing. He scanned the many Pokémon in the tall grass and saw one that caught his eye.
The Pokémon in question was a small, bipedal creature that bared the resemblance to a pink imp. It had curved ears and an equally curved nose pointing up. It had a black tongue sticking out of its devilishly smirking mouth. Aside from its thin arms and legs, it had purple bat wings on the back of its head.
Not sure himself, Evan pulled out his PokéDex out of caution and scanned the creature.
"Impidimp, the Wily Pokémon. Through its nose, it sucks in the emanations produced by people and Pokémon when they feel annoyed. It thrives off this negative energy."
Evan saw the typing, which intrigued him. 'A Dark/Fairy-type?' He didn't have to think too hard about this one. He instead turned towards Hana and Machop. "Okay, so it looks like this one is a Dark and Fairy-type."
"Got it, and what does that mean exactly?" Hana questioned.
"Basically, if a Pokémon has two types that both resists and are weak to certain types, they cancel out. So Machop's Fighting-type moves would be regularly effective, but it's still a Fairy-type, so it could have a Fairy-type move she'll be vulnerable to."
Hana furrowed her brow. She didn't like it, but she understood it for the most part. But still, it was annoying to have so many disadvantages.
Of course, this annoyance didn't go unnoticed by the wild Impidimp, who sniffed the negativity coming off the swordswoman. It turned around and ogled her with a sick grin.
"Such an ugly creature…!" Hana braced her sword, ready to fight the grotesque creature.
Immediately aware of the hostility, Evan held up his shield's side to flank her. "Hold on!" He stopped her advance. "This is the part where you use your Pokémon to fight it, not chop its head off. I'll go first so you can learn from example, okay?"
Hana closed her eyes and hummed before stepping back. "Very well then. Proceed as you wish."
Evan sighed out his nostrils. He was relieved that she was at the very least cooperative. Though he'd rather focus on the Impidimp heading right for him. He pulled out a Pokémon Ball and tossed it. "C'mon out, Bellsprout!"
The capsule popped open, revealing Evan's Bellsprout. She stood on her small root toes and looked at Impidimp with a scowl. "(Great, first it was a monkey, now I face a little goblin. Ain't I just lucky.)" She sassily scoffed.
The Impidimp snickered mockingly at his opponent. He hopped back and forth while flicking his tongue and blowing a raspberry, much to Bellsprout's irritation.
"(Boy, you're just asking for a butt-whooping! You're just a…)" A red aura enveloped Bellsprout as Impidimp continued taunting her. As soon as the mocking and jeering ended, the red aura faded, but Bellsprout swayed left and right in a daze.
"Bellsprout?" Evan realized what happened. 'Crap, that was Swagger. It amped up Bellsprout's Attack power, but now she's confused. Gotta make this count!'
Hana and Machop stayed silent, observing this battle.
Bellsprout swayed about, unable to make heads or tails of her surroundings. The confusion really messed with her head. "(Everything is…so annoying…)"
The wild Impidimp pointed and laughed at Bellsprout. The smell of her negativity was like incense to him.
Evan decided to take the chance. "Bellsprout, use Poison Jab!"
Bellsprout swayed about drastically, but it seemed like Evan's command echoed to where it run her bell-like head. Her leaves swayed as she lifted one coated in poison energy. She rushed for the Impidimp, who was too busy laughing to catch onto the attack before it was too late.
With a hysterical jab, a blast of spearheading venom pierced Impidimp, immediately pulling him off the ground. He went sailing through the air and careened back towards the earth with a thud that made everyone cringe. He laid on his side, visibly unconscious.
Hana's eyes widened in awe of the display. "Such power…"
"That's because Fairy-type are weak to Poison-types." Evan explained. "Certain Pokémon can learn moves that are more effective to others. Like Corrin's Riolu with Rock Tomb." He turned towards his Bellsprout, who was starting to come out of her confused state. "Hey Bellsprout, you good?"
Bellsprout rubbed her head with a leaf. "(Yeah…geez, and here I thought a burn or paralysis would be annoying. I think I found something worse…eh?)" She suddenly felt a spur of energy, enveloping her in a bright glow.
Evan's eyes widened in surprise. "Bellsprout?!"
"What's happening towards it?" Hana inquired, cautious as to keep her blade close.
Evan remained diligent as he stared at the glow. He realized what it meant and became even more surprised. "Bellsprout…she's evolving!"
They all watched as Bellsprout's body underwent a serious change. Gradually, her root-like body began retreating into her head as the appendage started to inflate in place of appendages. The leaves moved as well, much to all their wonder.
When the light exploded, it revealed an entirely new Pokémon in Bellsprout's place. Unlike Bellsprout, whose body resembled a flower, this one looked like a pitcher plant with three small green spots atop of her eyes, and a small, curved stem on the back. She had a gaping mouth with pink rims. She had two large leaves on each side of her body.
The newly-evolved Pokémon blinked, shaking her body. "(Oh…Arceus! I did not just get fatter!)"
"That's its evolution?" Hana sounded more curious than surprised. 'It's not cute at all…'
"A Weepinbell." Evan pulled out his PokéDex to analyze the newly christened Pokémon.
"Weepinbell, the Flycatcher Pokémon. This Pokémon has the appearance of a plant. It captures unwary prey by dousing them with a toxic powder."
Evan was taken aback by this. 'Guess that last battle revved up her experience to where she was near evolution. Guess this was the ticket she needed.' He smiled in delight. "How do you feel now, Weepinbell?"
"(Better, as soon as I grow a pair of legs again!)" She exasperated, hopping up and down.
"I see, so Pokémon have the capability to take on new forms as well upon battling enough." Hana realized. She turned towards Machop, who looked anxious to the point where she could barely stay still.
Evan turned back towards her. "Yeah, at least some can. But, let's just focus on experience first before we get into that. C'mon, let's find a suitable opponent for you and Machop." He turned back towards Weepinbell with her Poké Ball sticking out. "Good job, Weepinbell. Return."
Weepinbell returned to her capsule with only a small scoff, barely huffing toxic particles in the air.
As the duo-in-training went off to train against other wild Pokémon, they were being watched from afar by a rather nosy Hayato. He was far enough away to avoid any detection, but as he watched Evan's Pokémon evolve, he felt the tension he felt before intensify.
'Tch! So his Pokémon got stronger did it?' He thought begrudgingly. 'Well, I'll just have to get stronger to!'
He turned and looked around for any Pokémon that seemed like a strong opponent for his Hawlucha. He needed to face something that would give him a challenge. Something strong that would escalate his experience faster than Evan could. He needed it if he was going to impress Freya.
He heard something close by and immediately acknowledged it as a Pokémon. He saw that it was floating in the air, having an orange body with yellow spokes around the frame. It looked a lot like the sun, but with a rocky texture.
"Perfect! That one looks strong!" Hayato pointed at her. "Go, Hawlucha!"
"(Si!)" Hawlucha rushed for his new opponent, taking a small skip before jumping and flipping overhead. He landed on a knee and rose in a braced stance. "(Alright, let's go!)"
The Solrock said nothing, instead it floated in wait for its apparent opponent.
"Alright then, use your Brick Break!" Hayato ordered.
Hawlucha flexed before springing into the air once more. He came down with his right arm glowing brightly as he drove onto the Solrock's head. The force made an airwave, which only buffered the sun rock for a moment.
Hayato smirked. "That's a good shot."
Hawlucha held his poise, but his eyes widened at a realization. It wasn't enough!
The wild Solrock adjusted its vision and cried out. Its forehead gave off a wavy energy forcefield that it drove into Hawlucha's exposed chest. Being so close, he was unable to escape as the attack barreled across the air until momentum did the rest and pushed him towards Hayato.
"What the-OOF!" Hayato had the misfortune of being in Hawlucha's flight path and ended up tasting feathers the moment his body slammed into his own. Both fell to the ground with a loud thud, the force leaving both in a daze.
The wild Solrock remained silent, but it sensed that its opponents were in distress and pain and opted to turn away.
As a fainted Hawlucha laid atop Hayato, the latter groaned from the wind knocked out of him. "Ugh…cheap…shot."
"Okay, there we go…" Chef DK proceeded to dropping a Pecha Berry into the dirt hole. He used his hand shovel and scooped a layer of dirt to cover it. "And now the water."
"(Coming~!)" Cutiefly buzzed her way over, her tiny limbs dangling a small cup of water. "(Right here!)"
"Oh, thank you, Cutiefly." Chef DK thanked his Pokémon and accepted the water. He gently poured it over the dirt and quickly dampened it. "There you go. In about twelve to sixteen hours, you'll be ripe enough for plucking, hehehe." He looked up, seeing the rest of the field's progress. "Okay, just a few more to go…"
"Excuse us, Chef DK?" A voice called up to him.
"Huh?" The chef lifted his head, recognizing the person that was talking to him. It was Keith, accompanied by Nathan. "O-oh, it's you two. Hey guys, glad to see you're finally back." He greeted.
Keith offered a smile. "Thank you. I trust that you managed to keep everything in order while we were away?"
"Well…as orderly as I could get it, at least." Chef DK grimaced. "Despite the few hiccups, it really wasn't too bad. Oh! But get this, I got myself a Munchlax!"
Nathan cocked his head in the direction where a Munchlax was sitting down, enjoying his near-empty Honey jar generously provided by Cutiefly's Honey Gather. As he ate his fill, he was eyeing Farfetch'd's leek in his wing and slowly leaned over to reach it, earning him a good smack by the leek's owner.
"A Munchlax? Now there's a rare find. Good for you." Keith praised.
"Thank you. So, uh, what else did you guys find while out there? Any Pokémon for yourselves?"
"I got a Nidoran, and Keith got a Bronzor." Nathan clarified, beating Keith to the point.
"Oh, really? That's pretty cool. Well, let's just hope they like fresh grown berries like I do~!"
"Actually, that's why we're here." Keith noted.
The chef blinked. "What?"
To make his point valid, Nathan reached back and pulled out a handful of colorful berries. Seeing the numerous specimens gathered, the chef's jaw dropped at them all with a loud gasp.
"Oh…my…GOD!" He gasped, leaning in and eyeing all of them. "Look at all these! A-A Mago Berry! A Lum Berry! A-A Figy Berry! And is that a Wiki Berry?!"
Keith smirked. "Ah~, figured you'd know your berries. Nathan and I-"
"Hmm?" Nathan hummed, shooting him a glare. He caught on quick.
"Sorry, Nathan plucked some of these while we were out in the open. It was by chance, but with how scarce these were, it was an opportunity we couldn't miss. So, would you mind?"
"Huh?!" Chef DK was brought out of his daze and realized what he meant. "O-Of course! Yeah, I will definitely take them off your hands!" He reached over and accepted the berries with upmost delight. "Oh man, I'm gonna be making some good recipes now! Just you wait! Hahaha!
"Hm? What have we got here?" Rinkah walked by, with Sakura, Subaki, and Kaze following close by. "Oh! We heard you guys just got back. Guess this our first time meeting."
Keith raised a hand. "Pleasure. I'm Keith Harris."
"Nathan." Nathan greeted.
"Glad to see you're both well." Kaze greeted, before turning to Chef DK. "And Sir Chef DK…"
"Hm? Oh, yes, what is it?" Chef DK asked.
"If I may ask, what purpose do planting these berries provide?"
"Oh…well, to be honest, that's not up my alley. Sorry." He sheepishly admitted. "But you can ask Keith. He'll probably know. Uh, Keith, you mind?"
"Guess so." Keith turned towards the others present. "I'll be as blunt as I can. These special berries have unique features for Pokémon. You see, aside from being used as ingredients for various recipes like what Chef DK does, they're also used for their effects in battle." He explained. "For example, if a Pokémon eats a Chesto Berry, it can immediately be awoken from sleep."
The others looked surprised by this information, most notably the denizens of this universe. Unlike the humans that fell to this realm like Evan did, they were speechless to know such ample edibles could be used effectively for combat.
"Is…that so?" Kaze inquired. "Never expected that."
"Sound like a pick-me-up snack." Rinkah chirped. "I might have to try that. What other kinds of effects do these berries have?"
"They vary. Some restore one's energy, others cure status conditions. There are even others that reduce damage and increase stats…though those ones are rare and harder to grow. But, use them right, and the results would speak for themselves."
"A-Amazing…" Sakura gasped. She was currently being hugged by Audino, who smiled bashfully in the embrace.
"That's crazy." Chef DK awed. "Guess that explains why Munchlax always tries to get a handful when he is able."
Keith chuckled. "Well, it's not important at the moment. We just got back, and Nathan and I were about to retire for the time being. Perhaps later Chef DK could ration part of the stock for us to use?"
Chef DK sighed. He was really looking forward to trying out so many dishes with the berries, but he understood the cause "Yeah, guess so."
In their musings, they were all passed by Hayato, who was hurrying away somewhere. From his panting, he seemed to be in a rush.
"…the hell? Why the rush?! It's not lunch yet!" Chef DK complained.
"That boy's in a rush." Rinkah admired.
Hayato stopped for a brief moment and looked at them. "Hey, do any of you guys happen to know a way to heal a fainted Pokémon quickly?"
"Uh…what?" Chef DK quipped.
"Look, I don't have a lot of time! I need to heal Hawlucha! Is there any way to do that?"
The others looked confused, some shaking their heads in dismay. It didn't help his case.
Keith put his hand to his chin, humming. "Hmm…perhaps we should pay our good doctor one more visit. Let's go."
"Great…huh?" Hayato found himself embraced by Sakura's Audino, much to his chagrin. "Hey! Where'd this one come from?!"
"S-sorry!" Sakura quipped.
In a moment, Keith and Hayato found themselves in front of Poopenschmir's lab.
"So, this is that weird guy's hideout?" Hayato inquired, scanning the two-story building.
"It would appear that way." Keith chimed, holding onto Ditto – who had become his blind cane once more. "We just spoke to him a short while ago. He's probably occupying himself."
Hayato stepped forward and knocked on the entrance. "Hello? Anyone there? I came looking for some help with my Pokémon!"
"One second!" Poopenschmir shouted from the inside. In a moment, the door opened to reveal the eccentric doctor as he adjusted his swirly glasses. "Yes, what is it?! I'm very busy!"
"Sorry for the disruption, doctor, but we were hoping that you could help us with our dilemma." Keith explained.
"I heard that you're a doctor. Do you know how to treat my Hawlucha so that he's back up to speed?" Hayato bluntly asked.
Poopenschmir's eyes widened beneath his huge lenses and pointed. "Aha! I had a feeling that this would happen! Luckily for you…" He pointed to himself. "This doctor thought ahead, and built just what you need! Gimme a sec! Yip!" He hopped back into his lab behind the door, leaving the two alone.
The sounds of cluttering and Poopenschmir's frequent mutters didn't go unnoticed by the two waiting patiently outside. They heard something drop and Poopenschmir shouting swears, causing them to feel disturbed, if not worrisome.
In a minute, the door opened again, with Poopenschmir strained as he was dragging something across the ground. It looked like a medium-sized machine that sat like a table, but was heavily structured with two curved boards like arches on the ends. These arches had red plus signs on them. The inside of the machine was black, with what appeared to be six concaves that looked like a Pokémon Ball would fit perfectly in each one. From how the doctor was dragging the large piece of equipment, it seemed rather heavy.
"Hnnngh…! Hnnnngh…! C'mon, you…hefty piece of shit!" The doctor strained.
"Is everything okay, doctor?" Keith asked.
"Yes! This is very heavy! Somebody help me before my back breaks like a board, damnit!"
"Okay. Ditto!"
Ditto wordlessly responded by shifting its shape once more. It changed from a cane, to an exact replica of Poopenschmir himself. The copycat hunched over and strained as it lifted the bottom half of the machine across the yard to wherever Poopenschmir intended.
Hayato's eyes widened at the sudden shapeshift. "Woah! Did it just transform?!"
Keith smirked. "You'd be surprised."
"Right here! Here!" Poopenschmir trudged to a stop along the northern walls of the castle. With all their strength used up, both scientists nearly faltered; one of them completely dissolving to a pile of pink goop. The real one wiped his forehead with his sleeve and sighed heavily. "Okay…phew. That was a workout…woah. Okay, you can see now!"
Hayato, who was guiding Keith for the time being, drew closer. "What's that?"
Poopenschmir placed a hand on the huge device. "This, right here, is what will solve your problems! Behold! The Portable Pokémon Center! Or as I like to call it, the 'PPC' for short!"
"An interesting name choice." Keith mused. "Where'd that come from?"
"Ah, well, good question. Allow me to explain. You see, what I did was, I duplicated the machine that Pokémon Centers use to heal other Trainers' Pokémon. With this, it will be much more efficient than using old-fashioned rest to recharge your fighting machines."
Hayato's eyes widened. "You're kidding! You're saying that there's stuff like this in your world to instantly recover?!"
"Correct! Oh, but, there is one drawback…" Poopenschmir's mood dropped some as he fidgeted. "You see, it uses up a lot of power. So after you use it, it needs like a ten-minute recharge period."
"Ten minutes?" Keith parroted. "That's rather off-putting if we're all constantly battling, wouldn't you say?"
"Oh, so~rry! I don't see any other scientist around, do you? Maybe they went out on lunch break? Who knows!" Poopenschmir chided back mockingly.
"I-I know, I know…sorry."
Poopenschmir exhaled and dusted himself off. "Good! Now then, if you'll excuse me, there's a faulty wire in the Immersifier piece calling out to me!" He marched back towards the lab with a dainty skip.
Hayato furrowed his brow as he watched him off. 'These guys get weirder by the hour.' He looked down at the PPC and realized what he came here for. "Well, time to see if it works."
He picked up Hawlucha's Poké Ball and placed it into one of the six open slots. As soon as it was nestled good, he looked at the control panel that was on the side and saw numerous buttons and a tiny screen above them that was blinking. He had no idea what it meant, but when he saw a blue button light up labeled 'Heal', he picked up on it.
"Like this…?" He used his index finger and pressed the button. Instantly, the screen lit up with the words 'HEALING IN PROGRESS'. He pulled away as he watched the machine and monitor flash three times. A chirpy melody played while in process.
Hearing the melody made Keith smirk. 'He even got the melody down. That doc really does know his stuff after all.'
After the lights faded. The screen showed 'Finished' and immediately turned off. It hummed low as its systems were heading into recharge mode. Meanwhile, Hayato reached and grabbed Hawlucha's Pokémon Ball. "Well, if that's all it takes! This magic healing thing rocks!" He turned and ran off. "Thanks guys!"
Keith was left alone, humming to himself. "Could stand to stay when you say your thanks next time…"
Meanwhile, nearby, Felicia was watching them. She saw what Poopenschmir had invented and lightly gasped. "Such a marvelous machine…" She mumbled. Her curiously led her to subconsciously feeling something she kept hidden beneath her maid outfit. More accurately, the egg that she was still holding onto. 'I wonder…does he have anything for this?'
"Lady Felicia."
Felicia snapped back to reality and instantly tucked the egg away. She whipped around as her acquaintance approached. "Oh, Gunter, it's you!"
Gunter smiled. "That's quite a reaction you had. Were you that startled?"
Felicia shook her head. "Oh, n-no, sorry. I was just lost in thought, that's all!"
Gunter hummed, seemingly invested, but he chose to let the matter go. "By any chance, have you seen our Lord around?"
"Lord Corrin?" Felicia blinked. That came out of the blue, but she knew it was within reason to be worried. "Hm, I think I saw him head off somewhere with Lady Azura. They shouldn't be too far off."
In the eastern area of the castle, there were more hills that opened up towards a riverbank of pure, untainted water, untouched by man nor time. The hills provided decent cover, and aside from a few bushes, there wasn't anything to destroy. A perfect setting for what Corrin was going to attempt.
Corrin was not alone in this, however. Azura followed behind until they were near the water's edge. Once they got there, they turned and faced each other.
"I'm pleased to have your company, but if I may ask, why all the way out here did you want to meet?" Azura asked.
"Thank you for going along with this." Corrin started. "Please, hear me out."
Azura went silent, awaiting for Corrin's reason.
"Do you remember when I was on that rampage, how you and Evan were able to bring me back to my senses?"
"Yes, I remember." How could she? It was a close call for Evan especially since it took a lot to keep Corrin's dragon form in check.
Corrin frowned. He honestly wished to forget what happened. There was no way he was going to be able to bring back all the souls that perished that day. It was amazing how despite the few screams he hears in his sleep that he hadn't cracked from guilt.
He inhaled before seemingly becoming more resolute. "I want to get stronger. I can't just rely on the Yato and Riolu for everything. There may come a time where I might have to actual turn into a dragon to achieve our goals. So, it would really help if you were there in case something happens."
Azura nodded. "I see. But you have the Dragonstone, so you won't have to worry about your feral state anymore."
"Maybe so, but still." Corrin sounded dead serious, something that took Azura by surprise. "I can't remember much at all, but I remember being overtaken by an immense power. I don't want anyone else getting hurt because of that."
Azura blinked, taking a moment to consider Corrin's plea. Though she hadn't turned into a dragon herself, she did witness Corrin's strength with her own eyes. She could only imagine the guilt and frustration of having such potential and not utilize it. More so, to not be of any use to stop Anankos.
She gripped her Steel Naginata and nodded. "I understand." She smiled. "If this is what you want, I will lend you my support. Please, do bear with me."
Corrin nodded. "Got it, thanks."
He pulled out a Poké Ball, in which Azura followed his lead.
"Riolu, come out!"
"Brionne, lend me your strength!"
The capsules popped open, expelling the two Pokémon out to the open.
Brionne stretched her hands up and flexed her tail. "(Ah~, I feel so fresh! Oh, look, a river!)" Without a second thought, she dove into the water with a loud splash.
"(Yes, Corrin?)" Riolu turned towards his Trainer, his aura feelers sensing a serious vibe from him.
"We need you guys to help with training. Please, just bear with us." Corrin insisted. He turned towards Azura. "You ready?"
Azura nodded, taking a step back. "Yes. Ready."
Corrin exhaled and closed his eyes. He focused his mind and power into the Dragonstone in his palm. At first, nothing seemed to happen. However, as time went on, the stone began glowing.
Riolu's emanation sensory triggered, making him stiff. '(Corrin's aura…I can feel it resonating with the stone. I'm feeling a strong swell of energy.)' He took a step back out of caution.
The stone's light began to intensify until it gave off a powerful flare. The energy-like inferno enveloped Corrin, much to everyone's shock. However, he didn't look bothered by it as the substance overtook him. His form gradually changed with the hue of the flames to an indigo shade before erupting.
"KROOOOOOAAAAH!" Standing in Corrin's place was a quadruped dragon; the same one that he became.
"(Wow~! Now that's a neat little party trick!)" Brionne awed.
Riolu stared in awe and shock. '(Such power…did Corrin really turn into a Dragon-type?)'
Azura watched Corrin carefully, seeing him being perfectly still like a statue. "Corrin…can you hear me?"
Corrin lifted his head and looked around. He certainly felt different. He looked down at his feet, realizing they had become claws on the front that gripped the grass below. He craned his head and saw the hooves on his back, which served to confuse him, but didn't question otherwise. He saw and levered his wings, tail, and craned his long neck around.
Out of curiosity, he marched over towards the shallow riverbank and looked down at his reflection. He almost recoiled at the sight of himself.
'Woah! Is that…really me?' He thought critically. Lifting a wing and watching it reflect on the surface, he came to a realization. 'This is…incredible!'
He turned towards Azura. "Sorry about that, Azura. But it looks like I'm fine, just like you said." Corrin answered. Surprisingly enough, he could speak! Though his voice was deeper and was two-toned with a distant echo. But otherwise, he was vocal.
Azura looked relieved. "That's good. The Dragonstone worked."
"That's good…I was worried, too. But still, keep watch over me just in case." He took a battle stance. "Let's go, Riolu!"
"(Understood.)" Riolu brought his paws up towards Brionne. "(Sorry if your playtime is short, but we need this experience. Do bear with us if you can.)"
"(Oh~, I get to fight a dragon and you? How exciting!)" Brionne chimed. "(Let's bring our song on~!)"
"Now Machop, Low Sweep!" Hana shouted.
Machop eyed the wild Chansey that stood a short distance away. She kneeled before lifting her left foot and swept it across, kicking Chansey's lower abdominal region so hard that she fell to her back. She didn't get back up after that.
Hana beamed with pride. "Just like that!"
Machop folded her arms, huffing. "(Hmph! Not even a challenge…but I'll take it.)"
So far, the regiment that Evan advised had been going according to plan. Thanks to the Trainer's knowledge of Pokémon types and using his PokéDex to scout their levels, he helped her in scoping out areas with Normal, Rock, Dark, and Steel-types. Though the last type didn't have much luck at all, but there were quite a few Rock-types and Normal-types that they battled.
"Nice job, guys! Chansey have very low Defense, so that one blow did the trick." Evan reaffirmed.
Hana smirked. "Thanks for the tip. Thanks also for teaching us to avoid Flying-types for the time being."
"Don't worry, I think that Rock Tomb TM is in the Accessory Shop with the others. We can swing by there and teach Machop that move if you want."
"We'll take it into consideration. Our strength should have increased considerably after all these battles."
"I'd say so. Machop gained a few good levels…behind you!"
Evan's warning alerted Hana and Machop. The two turned to see another Pokémon appearing from the tall grass. It was a mammalian Pokémon that had the appearance of a skunk. It had a primarily purple body with cream-colored fur running up the head towards the spiky tail end. It had wide eyes, small dark irises, and three claws on each foot.
Evan pulled out his Pokémon Dex again, scanning their adversary.
"Stunky, the Skunk Pokémon. It sprays a foul liquid from its rear. Its stench spreads over a mile radius, driving Pokémon away."
'Well…that stinks.' Evan almost did a double-take on the unintended pun he told himself. "It looks like this one's a Poison and Dark-type. You sure you wanna fight it? Machop's health is running a little low…"
Hana brazenly nodded. "Yes. No matter how putrid it may be, we'll overcome that! Machop, ready!"
"(Hope you're ready to smell defeat, because that's what you'll get a huge whiff of.)" Machop panted, bringing her arms up.
The wild Stunky hissed and brought his end up. He sprung after Machop head-on, opening his mouth as energy fangs grew swiftly from his upper jawline. The fangs met Machop's arm, causing her to cringe and pull back.
"(Gah!)" Machop winced, then her body visibly cringed.
"A flinch!" Evan exclaimed.
Hana looked surprised. "What's going on?"
"It means that she's flinching, and she can't attack. Some moves have that effect."
Machop grunted, but she was still standing. Her health was still in the yellow, so she was able to battle. It was just a scratch.
Stunky only added insult to injury when he rushed again with the opening, his front claws extending and brandishing lengthier, glistening nails. He slashed repeatedly against Machop, approximately three times. It was enough to make her step back and drop to a knee.
"Machop, Revenge!" Hana commanded.
Machop opened and eye and careened back a fist. "(Ironic this ain't Payback…but you deserve it!)" She embedded her fist in the glowing energy and drove her fist into Stunky's face. The impact to her face nearly snapped his head off, but instead blew him across the grass and onto his stomach with a loud thud.
The wild Stunky hissed, straining to get up.
"Hurry now!" Hana shouted. "Low Sweep!"
Machop didn't falter as she charged straight for the struggling skunk. Without missing a beat, she drove a roundhouse kick across his right side, kicking him off the ground.
"(And down goes one…more…?)" Machop trailed off as she saw something wrong. As she followed through with the kick, Stunky's body began to give off a brief light…before an explosion overtook the two.
Both Hana and Evan covered themselves as the explosion was surprisingly strong, but they both had a foot forward and were braced for the impact. Evan had his shield on hand to minimize the impact.
"Hrah!" Hana sliced through the smoke, dispersing it with one strong swing.
With the smoke cleared out, they both looked ahead and were stunned at what they saw. To their surprise – and Hana's dismay – Machop was laying on her back fainted, as was the wild Stunky. It was a double knock-out.
Hana grimaced annoyingly. "What…just happened?"
"Hang on…" Evan went silent as he traced his thoughts around his intelligence. After a few seconds, his eyes widened at what happened. "That Stunky…its Ability was Aftermath!"
"Aftermath?" Hana parroted.
Evan nodded. "Yeah. When a Pokémon with Aftermath is defeated, it sets off an explosion that affects the Pokémon that defeated it, dealing damage." He frowned. "And Machop was already so low on health before this."
Hana looked disappointed. She didn't like this, not one bit. But she held her head up high with a calm visage and recalled her Machop back to her Poké Ball. "You've battled well. We'll train harder when you've got your rest." She put it away and sighed.
Evan walked closer. "Hey, you doing okay, Hana?"
"Yes, I'm well." She turned towards him, remaining stern. "But that was entirely your part! If you had known about that Pokémon and its Ability, then I would have avoided it and confronted another more amiable Pokémon to accommodate our training."
Evan furrowed his brow. "Me? I've never fought a Stunky before, I wouldn't have known either unless I fought it. Some Pokémon's Abilities you won't know unless you battle them for yourself. That's the whole basis of experience."
Hana clicked her teeth. "Tch! Suppose there's merit in such words. But make sure it doesn't happen again."
Evan frowned. He really didn't appreciate her attitude right now, but he had to remind himself that this was a trained swordswoman, one of the best in Hoshido if he recalled. He knew better than to throw caution out the window. It's how he was able to last thing long to begin with.
"I'll do what I can." He answered. "Let's just head back to the fortress for now. It's almost lunchtime anyways."
Hana started walking. "Very well. I suppose proper nutrition will benefit. We'll eat, then I will teach you…" Just as she was a few feet away, she felt the ground beneath shake. It felt like something heavy was coming. She immediately took a stance. "Something's wrong!"
'An earthquake?' Evan looked down at the ground in caution as he rationalized. 'No, the Astral Planes are peaceful. They don't get tremors. Which means…' His eyes widened at a realization. "Hana, move!"
Hana heard his plea and looked at the ground. She and Evan separated just when a large rocky prong shot up from the soil. The ground erupted and dirt collapsed when a large, serpent-like creature made of boulders clustered into a lumpy chain arose. Its height was staggering, much to their shock.
Hana backpedaled, her eyes wide with shock. "Is…that a Pokémon?!"
The rocky serpent let out a loud roar, fully surfaced. It stood to being nearly 30-feet-tall, with its whole body being nothing but rock. Its face was defined with rough ridges, and a bridge defining the nose. The giant rock spike stuck out of its head like a horn and its dark eyes scanned its surroundings/
This was a Pokémon that Evan was familiar with! "An Onix." He breathed. He pulled out his PokéDex and analyzed their surprise visitor.
"Onix, the Rock Snake Pokémon. When it travels underground, it causes rumblings and tremors. It can move at 50 mph."
"Now it makes sense. That earthquake just now was this Onix." Evan realized. He didn't know if this was sheer coincidence or bad timing, but he knew better than to lose his guard against such a robust creature.
"(Ah, that was filling.)" The wild Onix surfaced with a low groan. Since Onix are known to always be eating as they burrowed, it was only natural that one would get full. Not that he was complaining. The dirt around here was rich. He couldn't get enough of it!
Hana glared up at Onix, her Iron Katana at the ready. "No matter who the adversary, I shall not waiver!" She rushed in after the Onix, much to Evan's shock.
"Hold on!"
The wild Onix looked down, noticing the little human rushing at him with a thin but sharp blade. He made no effort in moving and Hana brought her blade down against his stone body.
CLANG!
The katana met his body, however, instead of cutting through it like she could with trees, the rock body was too hard, much to her shock. Her eyes widened in shock. "What?!"
Onix scoffed, opening his mouth as the inside glowed bright orange. An orange orb of energy manifested and fired it at Hana. The swordswoman was struck by the harsh blow, sending her falling towards the ground.
Evan saw this and made a quick-ditch effort. "Hana!" He pulled out a Poké Ball and threw it. "Butterfree, catch her!"
Butterfree emerged from his capsule, flying steadily through the air towards Hana. Just when she was about to hit the ground, Butterfree swept over her and used his two tiny hands to grab her hand. Hana dangled for a moment as she recovered from the shock, but soon opened her eyes and realized what happened.
"You…you saved me…" she quipped.
Butterfree smiled. "(You're welcome.)"
Onix growled. "(That wasn't very nice. How would you like it if I came up and hit you out of nowhere?)" He opened his mouth as loops of energy swiftly converged into the vacuum in his mouth. "(Take this!)" His maw widened, but instead of an orb like before, it was indigo dragonfire.
Hana looked shocked, but Butterefree was a step ahead. "(Oh no you don't!)" His antennae channeled psychokinetic energy before he unleashed a Psybeam to counter the dragonfire. The two attacks collided, making a brief standoff before Butterfree's attack was able to overwhelm the dragonfire. It blasted into Onix's face, causing a smoke surge around his face as he reeled in pain.
In haste, Butterfree fluttered closer towards the ground and sat Hana down. Evan rushed over and got in front of Hana to guard her. "Hana, stay behind me. I'll handle this."
Hana didn't say anything. She was still in shock. But Evan knew he had to get this situation under control, fast!
'Onix are very sturdy, especially on Defense.' He relayed what he knew about Onix from his studies and school. 'It's a Rock and Ground-type, so I'll use…' He pulled out a Pokémon Ball and tossed it. "Weepinbell, go!"
Weepinbell emerged back into the open, flexing her leaves upon feeling the air again. "(Alright, what is it this time?)" In her disgruntlement, a shadow cast over her. She traced it up, noticing the agitated Onix glaring down at her. "(…well, shit.)"
"(You're not a rock…not edible!)" His eye twitched. "(Begone!)" He opened his mouth as orange energy charged into a hardened energy sphere.
"Weepinbell, Poison Jab!" Evan shouted.
Onix fired the Smack Down at Weepinbell, who pulled one of her leaves back as venomous energy coursed through them. With a hardy jab, she connected with the energy mass, creating an explosion that separated the two combatants.
"(For a Rock-type, that wasn't so hard.)" Weepinbell sassed. "(Guess you got cold stones, eh big guy?)"
'Butterfree's Psybeam did some damage, but we need to put a stop now.' Evan elaborated his next move. He reached his arm out with a command. "Alright, use Sleep Powder!"
Weepinbell aimed her gaping mouth at Onix, unleashing a broad, green pollen that scattered around the rock snake's face. Onix squirmed as he tried to sway the bizarre pollen away, but it was too late.
"(Gnnngh…so sleepy…appetite…inducing…)" As he was blaming his rock diet, his massive body collapsed with a loud thud. He laid before Evan and everyone else, fast asleep and not looking to be getting up anytime soon.
Hana gasped, taken aback by how easily her opponent went down. 'He…he took it down like it was nothing. Meanwhile, I was…'
'It's a lot easier to catch Pokémon when they're afflicted with a status condition. Don't wanna waste this!' Evan reached and pulled out a Poké Ball. "Go, Poké Ball!"
He threw the ball and it tapped on Onix's hard snout. The capsule opened wide and converted the humungous Pokémon into energy that all went inside, much to Hana's shock. They both watched as the ball hot the ground, rolling once, then twice, and then a third time…
Click!
The loud click was like a led weight off Evan's chest. Though he grinned at the new capture that he got in the Onix. He hurried over and picked up the Poké Ball with a smile. "Alright, looks like we caught ourselves an Onix!" He turned towards Weepinbell. "Great job, Weepinbell."
Weepinbell shrugged. "(Meh, hardly a challenge, but whatever. You're welcome, I suppose.)"
"(That's so cool! We got another ally!)" Butterfree chirped happily, kicking his feet.
"(Heh…guess so. Though I guess I should thank you for buttering him up a bit.)" Weepinbell teased.
Butterfree shook his head. "(I honestly didn't do much, really…)"
She eyerolled. "(Keep being modest like that and you'll just be a showoff.)"
As Evan reveled in his success, Hana stood a short distance away, looking stunned as well as dumbfounded. She didn't know whether to feel one or the other, or both. But she knew for a fact that Evan saved her from a big mistake that could have cost her.
"Hmph…" She didn't like it, but she knew she had to accept it. She walked up to Evan and presented herself.
Evan turned back towards her. "Hey, how're you feeling, Hana? You hurt from that last attack?"
"No, I'm fine." She lied. Her body still stung from that blow, not that he needed to know that. Her stance hid her injuries well. "I was just careless, that's all. I thought that we agreed that you'd alert me in the future?"
Evan frowned. He knew he was being patient with her up until now, however, she was making it hard for herself. He knew where to draw the line.
"Uh, I didn't tell you to rush in like that, did I?" he backlashed.
Hana clicked her teeth. "Then what was I supposed to do? As Lady Sakura's retainer, it's my duty to-"
"Shut up about your retainer crap! This has nothing to do with it!" Evan's sudden outburst surprised Hana, causing her to freeze. Evan sighed heavily. "Hana, just do me a favor and level with me for a minute here. Are you taking this seriously?"
Hana put a hand to her hip. "Of course I am! I told you that I take my training very seriously! It's how one becomes strong!"
"Then you should know when to pull back, too! Your Machop fainted! Your priority as a Pokémon Trainer is to make sure that your Pokémon are healthy and safe. You could have just continued back and let me handle the Onix by myself! Your safety is just as important!"
"If it's for Lady Sakura's sake, then I'll gladly risk it!"
"It's not for Sakura! It's for Machop and yourself! Let's say that you were Lady Sakura, and Machop was you. Now tell me, in your honest opinion…do you really think Sakura would act the way you are right now?"
Hana opened her mouth to retaliate, but when she was about to make sense, nothing came out. She had known Sakura far longer than Evan, so she knew her very well to where she could make out when she was crying or was genuinely happily. The bravado she had before faded dimly as she considered her best friend's feelings.
"…I…I hadn't considered that." She mumbled at her realization.
Evan nodded. "I haven't known her for so long, but I do know that she's a good-hearted girl. If she and her family were upset about Corrin being taken from them, imagine how'd she feel if she lost you. I know if I lost Butterfree or Weepinbell, or even my friends, I'd be upset beyond words."
"(You mean that…?)" Butterfree sounded touched. Despite her sassy nature, Weepinbell seemed humbled by his consideration.
Evan stepped forward. "All I'm saying is, it's okay to face something you're not familiar with, but know where to draw the line. And if you're not up to it, then just count on us…I mean, that's why we're in this together, right?"
Hana didn't know what to say, or what to feel. But she knew that despite her better judgment, she had to respect Evan's viewpoint. Especially after what happened. It only validated his reasoning.
'Perhaps I was too hasty to get strong myself after all…' She exhaled out her nose, calming down. She opened her eyes and straightened herself up. "Right. Sir Evan…I apologize for my behavior. I'll…consider your advice and be more wary with handling these Pokémon from now on."
Evan grinned. Hearing that was like sweet honey. "So…you wanna take a break?"
Hana relaxed. "Yes. I'll allow Machop some rest. In the meantime…I believe that I owe you some sword handling lessons."
"Right."
Hana's prideful grin returned. "But don't be discouraged if you can't keep up…but I hope that you're a fast learner."
Evan smirked. "I've been told. Let's go, guys."
The group, including Butterfree and Weepinbell, headed back towards the castle, where their lunch awaited them.
"Okay, we got it this time. No more mishaps." Hayato breathed out. He turned ahead and reached his arm out. "Alright Hawlucha, use Aerial Ace!"
His Hawlucha spread his wings and spurred over the ground after the wild Spearow. As Hawlucha passed by, the smaller avian cried out before falling onto his back with a thud, fainted.
"Yes! Excellent work!" Hayato praised with a bright smile. "About time! Now, just wait until Freya hears about this!"
Rather than resume his training any further than just that one battle, Hayato recalled Hawlucha and strode back into the castle walls with pride.
"Now, were is she…?" He looked around for any sign of her. That's when he was hearing a strange sound from close by. "Huh? What's that weird music? Is somebody performing a ritual?"
That strange ritual music happened to be Freya. She was sitting on the ledge to her and Evan's treehouse, blowing into her bagpipes. As disturbing as this may have sounded to others, it seemed to relax her Pokémon as they seemed idle and chill around her, especially Drizzile.
"(Ah~, I always love that sound…Eep!)" Drizzile's uneasiness that was going away gradually was interrupted by footsteps drawing closer. She turned invisible out of caution.
Freya was taken aback by Drizzile's sudden retreat and stopped playing. She looked up and saw Hayato approaching. "Oh, hey." She responded neutrally.
"Hey there." Hayato smirked coolly, rubbing his nose with his index finger. "So, what are you doing?"
Freya looked down at her bagpipes. "Hm? Oh, I was just tuning and playing my instrument, that's all. It really calms down Drizzile."
'Seriously? That's what's making that noise?' Of course he didn't want to say it aloud. He didn't want to drive her away after all. He cleared his throat to find his voice. "Uh, y-yeah, sure. It sounds almost as nice as you."
"Oh…thank you." Freya smiled at the compliment.
"Yeah, it reminds me of the intense winds we get through our village. Especially the ones that make you fall over from how harsh they are."
Her delight turned to confusion, and partial discomfort. "Um…excuse me?"
Hayato changed the subject. "Well, not that it's nearly as riveting as your…flute bag, but I was training pretty hard today." He beamed. "Yup, showed a wild bird up when it looked at me and Hawlucha funny."
"Oh, I see…" Freya's tone was curt. Of course, Hayato didn't recognize this and took it as a good sign.
'Heh, looks like I got her reeled in. She's gotta be impressed with me by now.'
'First he calls my music obnoxious, now he's dissing my bagpipes?' Freya was annoyed, but she was subtle about it and tried to get away. "Um, I think lunch is almost ready…"
"Oh, great idea! I'm starving! How's about we sit beside each other, and I can give a couple pointers." He coolly smirked and winked with upmost boisterous pride.
"Hey, Freya." Coming at the most convenient time – to Freya – was Evan. He was accompanied by Hana, the two returning from their little training session.
Freya's mood lifted some. "Oh, hey there stranger!"
"Oh…hey." Hayato's tone spoke anything but generosity. He was not happy seeing Evan, even if he was with another woman. He crossed his arms. "Well now, where've you been all day?"
Hana scoffed. "We were training. I've learned plenty thanks to Sir Evan's knowledge." Her smile had grown. "And I intend to be more mindful because of it."
Hayato crossed his arms. "Sure you two weren't eloping?"
The two exchanged looks, only to look back confused. "Uh…no?" Evan answered.
Hayato eyerolled. "Whatever. I was just asking Freya here if she wanted to grab some lunch, right after she's done with that horn sac she carries around. Hehe."
An audible gasp was heard from Freya as she looked offended. She smacked Hayato across the head with her left arm, putting him on the pavement with a loud grunt. He grunted loudly as his face met the stone below.
"Ugh…" He groaned lowly.
Everyone looked down at his pitiful state.
"Uh…is he good?" Evan worried.
"Hmph! He has a long way to go." Hana exasperated. "Hm?" She eyed Freya's Snom, momentarily taken aback by the small Pokémon's appearance. She looked partially tranced by her adorable stature. 'It's…so cute!'
"Um, did we miss something?" Evan asked Freya.
Freya shook her head and tossed her hair over her shoulder. "No, you didn't. Sorry you had to see that."
Evan's initial shock wore off. "Uh, no worries. Anyways, we were training like she said, and I caught myself an Onix." He held up Onix's Poké Ball in his hand for Freya to see.
"An Onix? That's great." Freya sounded far more pleased than she did a few seconds ago. "Glad you got a new ally, Evan."
"Thanks. We were gonna get some lunch. You hungry for something?"
"Well, since you asked, sure." Freya walked with them towards the mess hall, her Drizzile, Carkol, and Trapinch in tow. Meanwhile, Snom sat on the top coal on the mound of Carkol's back as he rolled along.
Hayato was left on the ground, still dazed by the touch of Freya's cheek against his head. "Maybe…dinner then…" He mumbled before blacking out.

After six months of being away, I'm back! It felt so good to get a decent update in after so long! I know I've been very busy for a long time, though part of the reason was I was focusing on finishing the current arc for my other ongoing fanfic, The Contender's Ascent. Plus, I went through a drastic move with my family and was acclimating and finding a new job with health benefits that I needed. Though, I'm well on the way, so expect more stable updates moving forward!
Nothing too significant outside Evan ascertaining an Onix, but I wanted to help certain characters like Hana get their support levels up, sort of speak. It also wasn't major, but I made Corrin's use of the Dragonstone more prominent. There'll be more going into next chapter.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed this chapter! Can't wait to hear your feedback! XD
