Parents of the Year

Chapter 3

Mommy and Daddy Makes US Four!

"So, you're in some serious trouble," Heidi said, her arms crossed, looking down at the man that sat in a plush chair, unable to move, "Tock, we thought you've been dead for 30 years or at the very least, stuck in a time loop."

The thin man was sweating in fear, as Heidi's ears were smoking in anger. Robert Tock gave the woman a trembling smile and said, "W-well you know, Agent Heidi, I was very busy doing time things, when Geuwulf came to me asking for a spell trap."

"What about this spell trap?" Diesel asked, hands in his pockets, "What kind of spell did Wulf need?"

"He needed a time spell, to make time go backwards for the person affected by the spell. It means anything on them, goes back to where it came from as well. It's a nifty spell I've been fine tuning. Just throw the spelled hourglass at the person's feet, they age back and any items they have go back in time as well!"

"Did it work?" Heidi asked, earning a head shake, "Oh really? Why do you say that, humor us."

"The trap was mean for you, Agent Heidi," Tock said, with a sigh, shaking his head, "Wulf came talking about you and some things he wanted, hoping that the spell would send the items back to where you got them from. It didn't work, you and that agent over there, weren't affect by the spell."

"Can this spell be reversed?" Diesel asked, suddenly, coming over to the man and leaning forward, "Come on Tock, you're a smart man, shouldn't be hard for you to fix this, right?"

"Well, making time go backwards, it's only a temporary thing," The man said, earning a sigh, "Time will right itself on its own, but it will take some time, with that spell."

"How long?" Heidi asked, looking over to Diesel briefly, who looked back, "A month? A few weeks?"

"With the power behind that spell, try a few decades," Tock said, smiling nervously, "I mean, it didn't work, no one as hit with the spell. So, honestly, we're in the clear!"

"In the clear, eh?" Diesel asked, lifting a picture up and making Tock's eyes widen in shock, "Yeah, a few decades? We'll let Old Man Evanston deal with you, buddy."

Heidi stomped out of the interrogation room, with her hands on her hips and her eyes closed, in frustration. Diesel walked over to her and said, "Hey, Old Man Evanston will figure it out."

"It's Senior Agent Evanston to you," Heidi snapped, turning her head, "Also, he should be the one taking care of this, he made us partners, how and why did think this was a good idea…."

"He must have his reasons, Agent Heidi," Diesel said, turning to the woman, who wrapped her hand around the stones she wore, "He was setting a trap for the stones, if the trap really did work, where would they have gone back to?"

"Most likely his personal safe," Heidi said with a shrug, as she began walking down the hallway, "With the other stones in places where we don't know, it was easier to steal the ones he had and keep them on me."

"You robbed Wulf? Color me impressed," Diesel whistled as he followed Heidi down the hallway, "Wait…you robbed Wulf!"

"I did, he had the stones guarded by some weird fellow dressed like he was stuck in the 1400's," Heidi said, waving her hands (Diesel muttered "That would have been Hatchet,"), "I understood two or three words he spoke but then put him to sleep, zero time for his old English."

"Still," Heidi said, looking down at the stones, "I have no idea what power he's trying to get, all I know is that two humans got crossed in the middle of his little schemes, and as Agents, we have to see to it that they're back to original selves."

"That could be decades," Diesel tucked his hands in his pockets, following Heidi down the hallway, "What are we going to do with them?"

"That is an excellent question," Senior Agent Evanston appeared before them, holding a folder, "Agent Heidi, Agent Diesel, you're needed in the medical rooms."

Diesel and Heidi looked at one another before they followed the man, his pace brisk and path set. When they entered the area, they walked back into the secure room that housed their unexpected guests. The duo were expecting them to be asleep, still but were surprised when they found that both Stephanie and Carlos were awake, in their beds, shyly drinking juice and covered in their blankets, while a medic sat close by.

"Your charges are awake," Senior Agent Evanston said, turning to the two adults, "And they were looking for you two, specifically."

"Me?" Heidi asked, her voice making the children stop what they were doing and turn Diesel and Heidi, "Wait, there must be a-"

"Mommy! It's you, you're back again!" Stephanie was first to jump out of the bed, run over to Heidi and hug her, making her squeak in shock, "I've missed you!"

"Mami!" Carlos was next and together, the two children knocked Heidi down on her back, snuggling against her, with smiles on their face, "I missed you more!"

"M-mommy? Mami?!" Heidi croaked, her face paling in shock, before she turned to Diesel, "A-agent Diesel, do something!"

"Sorry, Mommy, I don't know what to-" Diesel started but let out a grunt as the two children turned to him and hugged his legs, "This is the most affection I've gotten from Ranger, heh!"

"Daddy, where were you too?" Stephanie looked up at the man, with bright blue eyes, "How could you two leave us here?!"

"Yeah, Papi," Carlos huffed, his brown eyes serious, "It's not right to leave your children somewhere alone, that's illegal!"

"I thought I had a few years before this parenthood stuff," Diesel cracked a smile, turning to Heidi, who still lay on the floor, "Agent Heidi…are you okay?"

"No! Why are we being called Mommy and Daddy!?" Heidi choked out, still in shock, "I demand answers!"

"Well, I suppose it's best if we have this conversation not in a medical room but in my office," Senior Agent Evanston mused, looking at the odd group, "Please, bring your children, I think there were some clothes left for them that should fit them."

(~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)

"We've managed to look at some of the time dust compound that was found on the children's clothes," Agent Evanston said to the two sitting before him, each agent had a child latched onto them, "It's a lot more than just time manipulation. It seems like some forget me dust was added as well."

"So, not only would it have been used to turn back time, but to make someone forget things as well," Heidi mused, wrapping her arms around Carlos, when the child demanded it, "Tock said that the trap was for me, so Wulf wanted me to lose the stones and forget where I found them?"

"Maybe," Diesel shrugged, looking over Stephanie's brown curls, "The man doesn't think right, sometimes."

"It runs in the family," Heidi sniffed, as she turned to her father, "What does that mean for these two?"

"It means, not only are they children, they don't remember anything else," Agent Evanston said, looking down at the children, who were holding tightly to Diesel and Heidi, but engrossed in playing a game on Heidi's phone, "For now, they're helpless wards of the Agency."

"The memory loss and age regression doesn't explain why they're calling us our parents," Heidi argued, earning a nod from Diesel, "Why are we Mommy and Daddy?"

"Well, it seems like they've imprinted on you both," The older man said, with a shrug, but his eyes were sparkling, "Hence the new titles."

"Like birds, or baby animals," Diesel said, looking down at Stephanie, who paused in her game to look up at him, owlishly, "That doesn't make sense, Senior Agent Evanston, how?"

"Well, now, the medical staff did a quick scan over the both of them and found some interesting things," Agent Evanston said, holding his hand out and showing information before the two, "The two have some levels of Potential Energy housed them."

"Now it makes sense why they smelled the way the did," Heidi said, looking at the information, "Diesel, you never told me that these two were Potentials."

"Potentials," Diesel blinked, looking down at the busy children and then to Heidi and her father, "What does that mean?"

"You-we will be do mandatory training on the basics of Unmentionables," Heidi said, looking down on Diesel, "Potentials are people who house Potential Energy in them but either are unable to use it, don't know how to use it or use so little of it, it doesn't leave a blip on the radar. All Unmentionables start out as Potentials but not all Potentials become us."

"So, they could have been Unmentionables, tch, why didn't Steph tell me," Diesel said, looking down at the girl, shaking his head, "Would have made our adventures more exciting!"

"She most likely didn't know, Potentials have a higher chance of being us when they're younger and are around Unmentionables that use their powers often, it's why when Unmentionables, if they have children and see the signs of their children being Potentials, use as much of their powers around them to help their children manifest their own gifts. If they're not around Unmentionables, they stay as Potentials and often time what little power they have goes dormant. These two were never around Unmentionables as children."

"From their medical scans they're about the age of 6," Agent Evanston said, looking to the two, "Quite young to be manifesting any signs of Potentialhood. The magic used on them must have caused a reaction or some sort. Their Potential gifts must have responded to the high concentration of foreign power, when they were forced back in time as children. Their energies sought out the most stable sources of Unmentionable Energy for safety, which just so happened to be you two."

"Which means…what?" Diesel asked, still confused, he definitely slept through this part of training.

"We're in charge of them, we can't leave them alone, their energy is tied to ours," Heidi sighed, pinching her brow, "If we leave them with someone else, or send them back to their families, they'll...well.." she made a motion with her finger and neck, "It's why we're being called Mommy and Daddy, their Potentialhood imprinted on us and think we are."

"Oh shi-shoot" Diesel stopped himself short, "So…what's going to happen now?"

"Well, now, you get a brand new mission, both you and your partner. You two will keep watch over these two children, until Tock figures out how to undo his magic by force or we come up with a solution," Agent Evanston said, going over to his desk and sitting down, "Of course, that means no more field work, either working from home or desk duty and of course the responsibilities that come with child rearing."

"We get to play house, that sounds…" Diesel looked over to Heidi who was leaning back in her seat, still pinching her brow, while Agent Evanston added "I'm sure you two can handle the logistics, where you will live, etc. etc."

"Lovely," Heidi muttered and then she sat Carlos down on the floor and stood, "I suppose, we have no choice, we're already in this mess, Agent Diesel, we can't do much but follow our new mission and wait for the Agency."

"Yeah you're right," Diesel said, setting Stephanie down and standing as well, "Let's go hash out the logistics parts…I guess."

"Mommy, Daddy," Stephanie looked up at the two, with a serious face, "I have to go potty."

"Me too!" Carlos said, tugging at Heidi's dress, "We drank too much juice in the white room."

"Well, let's take care of the potty first," Diesel said, making Heidi glare at him, "I bet you, this will be an easy job, Agent Heidi, not problem at all!"

(~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)

"Who are you?" was the first question the boy asked the girl that lay in the bed by him.

"I don't know…who are you?" the girl asked him back, making the boy blink and think about that question.

"I don't know too," the boy said, with a frown, looking down at his chest and running a hand over his chest, "Hey, we got the same thing on!"

"Yeah, you look like a ghost in yours, do I look like a ghost too?" The girl asked, looking down at her gown, "It covers my hands and toes!"

"Yeah, you're a ghost," The boy nodded his head and found his own feet covered, "Me too, I'm a ghost!"

The children giggled together and then covered their heads up to be ghosts. When they woke up, it was very scary for them. Where were they? Why were they in a white room together? What was going on? They didn't know anything about themselves! Maybe they were friends, because both the boy and girl found that the other had this very nice feeling. The boy liked how the girl felt warm, like the blankets around him and the girl liked how the boy made her feel happy even though she was very scared.

Someone in a white coat came in and both children clammed up, scared. They relaxed, when the person in the white coat gave them a smile and asked if they wanted a snack and juice. The snacks were delicious and the juice was too. The hadn't known how hungry they were until they asked for seconds. As they were eating the first round of their snacks, another person came in, a man. He would have been scary, if not for the fact that the two children could feel how nice he really was, plus he smelled really good, like chocolate and other nice things.

He asked them some questions. Did they know their names? How old where they? Where did they came from, do you know what year it is? The children shook their heads and it had the man looking oddly at them ,for a moment, before he muttered something to himself.

"Where's Mommy and Daddy?" The man blinked and looked the little girl that spoke, "Where are they? I can feel them, where are they hiding?"

"You can?" The man had asked and the boy nodded his head, "Interesting…"

"We want out Mami and Papi!" The boy demanded, his hands on his hips, a firm look on his face, "Why did they leave us here, alone?"

"Is your Mami and Papi my Mommy and Daddy too?" The girl asked the boy, who looked over to her and shrugged, "Oh…"

"Well the only ones close by…hmmm this is very interesting, very much so…" The man said but then he smiled and said, "I'll be back, I'll bring them to you."

The man had been gone for all of 5 minutes and returned with two people. Both the boy and the girl instantly knew, that the two standing before them were their parents. They didn't know how or why they knew this, but the man that smelled of cookies and wonderful snowy days and the woman that smelled like sweet fruit and warm days were their Mommy and Daddy!

Their Mommy looked surprised and their Daddy looked happy, but they didn't reject them! The two children were a little upset at being left alone and away from their Mommy and Daddy, but it didn't matter now, they were back!

What was even better was that when their Mommy and Daddy returned, The two children were dressed in comfortable clothes, given comfortable shoes and were able to leave the white room, holding tightly to their parents. In another room, they sat on their parent's lap, playing a game Mommy let them play, while the adults spoke about boring things and things they didn't care about.

When the adults finishes talking, their parents set them down, the Daddy gave them a bright smile and said, "Well now, let's go hash things out."

"Mommy, Daddy," the girl said, looking up the two, "I have to go potty."

"Me too," the boy said, "We drank too much juice in the white room!"

The boy and girl looked at each other as their Mommy and Daddy led them off to find a bathroom. So they both had the same Mommy and Daddy, but they couldn't be brother and sister, right? The girl had pale, skin with a few freckles on her face, blue eyes and wild, frizzy brown hair that fell passed her shoulders and the boy had darker skin, caramel in color, with soft brown eyes and black hair that ended before his ears.

That was an important question to think about but the real question that the two needed answering now was where was the bathroom?!

TBC….

The children are up, let's see what our two agents do next, now that they have new titles ;D Also...so important things were foreshadowed...
