Later in the evening
Pierce Home
Crabapple Cove Maine
It was now later in the evening, Daniel and Hawkeye had made dinner for the three of them, after all was cleaned up and put away, Daniel had excused himself for the evening to allow Hawkeye and Margaret some privacy and give them a real chance to talk. Both sat in silence, unsure how to continue their conversation from earlier Finally Hawkeye broke the ice.
"Have to spoken to your father since you've been back?"
"No, and I have no plans to. Not after the way he blew up at me for not taking one of the positions he lined up. I knew he wouldn't understand why I turned them down. He's always been all about the Army, I know he wanted a son." She said as she lowered her head. Hawkeye raised her chin up so he could look into her eyes, "Margaret what you've done here is monumental, you've saved a life, a little girl's life, and if he can't see that, to hell with him. We don't need him, you me and baby make 3, will be fine living here with dad."
"You make it sound easy Hawk."
"It is easy. It's a piece of cake."
"How can you be calm about this? After all, I showed up here without even talking about this with you?"
"We did talk about it, back at the 4077 if my memory serves me right."
"We didn't talk that much, we mostly gave into each other, that night."
"That's a form of communication..."
"In your mind it is."
"Now Now my dear, we do tend to communicate that way very well. I might have cracked up a bit, but I still have all my memories, the good and the bad." He said as he looked down at the floor. He started to get up when Margaret reached for his hand. He turned to face her.
"Hawk; I'm not here looking for a handout from..."
He silenced her with his lips, slowly deepening the kiss, he traced her lips with his tongue so she would part them open for him, and when she did he shot his tongue into her mouth, letting himself taste her, the sweet taste that is unique to his Hotlips.
She moaned as she allowed herself to get lost in the feelings he was once again waking up within her, she relished the way his skilled hands were working their magic on her body, she knew that her body was marked by his touch, that no other man would ever be able to claim her as his. Both stopped when they heard a tiny whimper from Kim (who was lying on the floor, on a blanket )
Margaret started to pick her up, when Hawkeye stopped her, by reaching down and taking her into his arms. "Hey, there little one, what's bothering you." He said as patted her bottom, she was dry. "Hawk she's probably hungry."
"I'm fresh out of glove milk."
Margaret rolled her eyes, "I have some milk for her." She said as reached into the baby's bag, "I'll be right back, I'm just going to heat this up."
"Yell if you need my help."
"I've got this Doctor." Margaret made her way from the den towards the kitchen. She stopped briefly and glanced at the photos on the wall, one, in particular, caught her eye, it was Hawkeye as a small child, standing next to a very attractive woman, this had to be his mother, Hawkeye looked like he was no older than 9 at the time.
As she looked at him, she thought about what he'd shared with her about his mom, his face and eyes always lit up, now she could see why, just by looking at the two of them, it was clear as day that, he loved her deeply, that's why he is the person he is, and why death effects him as hard as it does, it takes him back to the death of his own mother.
If she'd only realized this sooner, she'd never would've treated him the way she had, but back then she couldn't see past the antics that he pulled, now All that made sense to her, he knew he was in a war zone, and he didn't want to get close to anyone in particular, especially a woman.
Still standing in the hallway lost in her thoughts, she never heard Hawkeye and Kim walk up behind her."We thought you ran away from us." He whispered in her ear. This caused her to jump.
"Hawk, you scared me."
"Sorry mother!" He said as he flashed her his bright smile.
"It's fine, it's my fault, I got sidetracked."
"Here why don't you take the little one, and I'll heat this for you."
"You don't need to do that. I can handle it," Margaret said as she went into the kitchen, and started to search for a small pan to heat the baby bottle in.
Hawkeye ( still holding little Kim ) made his way into the kitchen, he stopped in the doorway when he heard her sobbing, he walked up beside her. "Care to share with me."
She turned her head, and quickly wiped her tears, "It's nothing, really I'm fine."
"Margie, I know better"
"Margie?"
"I thought I'd get your attention." He smirked
"I... I understand now why it was hard for you when you'd lose boys in Korea. Why you took it so personally."
"And you didn't?"
"Not like you did. Yes, it affected me, it still does. I understand now why you had a hard time letting people in, and a harder time letting them go." She handed Hawk the baby bottle and watched as he fed it to Kim. She placed her hand on the baby's soft black hair.
"Do you in all seriousness think we can make this work?"
"In all honesty, I'd love nothing more than to raise her with you, marry you, and give you a couple of more to go along with her."
"Aren't we jumping a little bit ahead of ourselves here?"
"Margie, I don't think so, if I had my way I'd have married you on our last day in Korea, this way I would've known for sure that you'd never run away from me."
"Hawk, if you'd have asked me, I'd said yes. I knew I didn't want to leave you. That's why I turned back around in the jeep, I was hoping you'd come after me."
"I was very tempted to, but I didn't want to stand in the way of your career."
"I did a lot of reflecting while I was at the 8063rd, Col Potter's words kept echoing through my mind, he said for me to have a good life, Every time I closed my eyes all I saw was you, I knew I couldn't have a good life without you, and I remembered what we talked about, how it wasn't fare that she couldn't have a good life. I knew then what I had to do. I knew I could not have a good life knowing that there was a tiny little girl that wasn't going to."
Hawk looked down at the precious little one in his arms, then back up at the woman whom he wanted to marry."Marry me?"
Margaret closed her eyes, "Yes, Yes Hawk, I'll marry you."
He quickly handed little Kim over to her mother, but not before kissing both of them. "I'll be right back, don't go anywhere."
She watched Hawkeye, run out of the room like a giddy schoolboy. Looking down at her daughter she smiled, "You know what little one, I made the right decision after all. We've both got the greatest man we could ask for."
