Edward
I didn't know what the hell Bella was doing but I was pretty sure she was insane. What the fuck was she thinking keeping that psycho in her house? I was not even to the edge of her yard when I had her father on the phone.
"Chief Swan here," he answered gruffly.
"Chief Swan, it's Edward."
"Oh, hey, boy, how are you doing?"
"Not good. I believe Bella's in trouble and she won't let me help her. Did you know she had James at her house?"
It sounded like he jumped up and spit out his coffee. "Stalker James? The James that shot you?"
"YES! I went to get her out of the house and she kicked me out and refused to leave with me. I don't know if she's brainwashed with Stockholm syndrome or what but you've got to get her out of there, Chief."
I heard his siren go on. "I'm already on my way, Edward; I'll be there as fast as I can."
I walked with Demetri back to the edge of her property and hid in the trees as we waited for Chief Swan to show up.
The Chief had turned off his sirens and was accompanied by two other cars with deputies. I was glad he was taking this seriously.
I sent Demetri home and met Chief Swan in the driveway.
"What's your plan?" I asked.
"Do you think she'll answer the door?" the Chief wondered.
"Most likely, but that James seems a bit off."
"I'd say more than a bit," the Chief grunted.
He motioned to the other two deputies to move around the house and went up to the front door.
I stepped behind the tree in the yard like a pussy, trying not to let her see it was me that called him.
Bella
I heard a knock on the front door and wondered who it was.
I'd just gotten Jamie calmed down. I didn't want any more disturbances.
"Jamie, why don't you go to our room while I get rid of whoever that is?"
He looked at me worried.
"It's probably just Jake. I haven't had a chance to tell him to stay way yet."
He nodded his head again and I heard another knock.
"Coming!" I called out pleasantly to show him I wasn't frightened or upset. I shut the bedroom door to hide him from whoever may be at the door.
I knew he was wanted.
I was shocked when I saw it was my dad.
"Bella," he said sounding relieved and hugged me tightly.
I hugged him in return, not sure why he was upset and then I felt his hug change.
He was suddenly dragging me out of the house and pushed me into the back seat of his patrol car.
He was shouting out orders to his men and I watched in horror as the deputies invaded my home, tackled Jamie and dragged him out bound and beaten to their patrol car.
Once they drove off, my father walked over and opened the door to let me out of the car.
I got out and slapped him.
"You have no idea what you just did!" I shouted.
"Bella, that man shot your daughter!"
"It was an accident!" I defended.
"Only because he was aiming for Edward!" he shouted back.
"He's sick, Charlie!"
"That's one thing we can both agree on!" he snapped.
"He has severe brain damage, Charlie! He never fully developed past the mental age of six! You just had your men beat a scared little boy!"
He looked at me stunned for a moment.
"He needs to be in a mental hospital, not jail! Did you see his head? Did you see what they did to him? It'll kill him, Charlie. Jail is not safe for him."
"It's not safe for you if he's out."
"I'm perfectly safe!" I was getting frustrated. "He needs to be on his medication and he needs to be taken to a facility where I can visit or he won't stay."
"Well, he won't have a choice in the matter, Bells."
"Charlie, he can escape from anywhere, even your jail. You need to let me see him. I need to talk to him so he'll settle down and you'd better call your deputies and tell them not to lay another hand on him or I'll sue your department myself!" I snapped.
Edward
I stood back shocked listening to the way Bella ripped into Chief Swan.
She was pissed.
I was surprised to hear about the brain damage thing but that would explain why Bella was so protective of this guy.
Her eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of me and she hurried over. "Edward, you have to help me find somewhere that'll take Jamie now. It needs to be nice and close. Please; can you help me find somewhere?"
"Of course." What else could I say?
I knew if I went against her, I would reap her wrath and I didn't want that right now.
As soon as the words left my lips, she fell apart. She burst into tears and I wrapped her in my arms. She sobbed for a moment and then she asked if I could drive her down to the police station.
She wanted to wait with Jamie until he had a place to go.
I wanted to say no. I hated that she was in that man's presence.
I wished he would just fall off the face of the planet but I knew Bella would not let that happen.
I started making several phone calls on our way. I was determined to have a place for him to go by the time we reached the station.
I had two possible locations. All the deals were bantered on speaker phone but Bella was too upset to focus on what was being said.
Finally, she perked up when the owner of the Oasis facility mentioned a horse therapy class and also dog training that they had patients help with.
"Jamie would love that, Edward. I might be able to get him to go there," she said hopeful.
I nodded in agreement and let the man know that I would be arriving that evening with a new patient and a very sizable donation. He promised the penthouse room would be ready for the new patient.
As soon as we arrived at the station she flew out of the car, not even waiting for it to come to a complete stop.
She was familiar with the station because her father worked there and ran straight back to holding.
"Jamie!" she called excitedly but a little happy. I watched as she gripped the bars and told the deputy to unlock the door. He looked to the chief for permission and to my surprise, he nodded for him to open it.
She quickly hugged James and they sat on the floor with him curled into a ball in her lap.
I stood there gap-mouthed, watching as the full grown man seemed to shrink down so he could fit in her arms.
He cried softly into her neck as she tried to calm him.
I looked over at the Chief and he looked broken.
"I found a place for him in a nice high end mental hospital. Bella was there when I made the deal so she approves of it. I just need the okay to take him, Chief."
He rubbed his face and looked at his confounded deputies. "Let me see what I can do."
I realized that this hospital was in Colorado and Bella had insisted that she live close by. I pulled up a few realtor listings and called my mother, asking her to pick a home for us. I was not living away from Bella again.
I refused to lose her.
I was surprised when I overheard her conversation with James.
"Edward is going to get you out of here, honey. I know you're wanted for hurting Elizabeth and Edward but we know you're sorry and we're trying to fix it so you don't have to go to jail, okay, baby? You won't go anywhere scary, I promise," she said soothingly.
"Where are they gonna take me, Bella?" he asked timidly.
She smiled widely. "You like horses, Jamie? Edward found a beautiful place for you to live that has horses to ride and feed. They also have dogs they train to help people. Would you like to play with some puppies?"
I watched as James peeked up at her face to see her excited expression.
"Really?" he said sounding just like a little child.
"Yes, really," she said with a beaming smile.
"Will you be there, too, Bella?" he asked sounding scared.
I took the opportunity to jump in. "I have my mother looking at homes next to his new place so we can be close."
Bella smiled at me and looked down at James. "See, Jamie, I'll be close so I can come see you all the time. Do you think you'll let me meet the horse you ride or the puppy you play with? You'll share with me won't you?" she asked catering to his childlike demeanor.
He nodded his head yes. "I'll show you everything, Bella, I promise and I'll even let you play with my puppy."
She gave him a tight hug and kissed his head gently. I hated that we were here but watching her interact with this damaged man made me love her even more.
Her heart was just too big for her own good and I knew I couldn't let her out of my sight.
Someone had to keep her safe and help her do the good she wanted to do without getting herself hurting in the process.
