Chapter nine:
They arrive and Mello is let off of A's back.
Mello looks to the place and is about to question it, as it looks like some cheap back alley medical practice.
"They let the look of this place be deceiving." Near explains and leads the way inside.
A lady working at a wooden desk glances up only to gasp at seeing Matt. She hurries over looking him over carefully. "What happened?"
"He caught me and him falling out of a tree." Near nods to Mello who gives a small nod as a hello. "We think he hurt himself doing so. He is a wolf." He adds clearly to make sure that Matt gets the right care.
The lady pulls up a radio from her pocket and holds down a side button. "I need a bed and a wolf doctor now."
Soon enough Matt is wheeled away into the clinic by two doctors who responded.
The lady at the desk leads them past the cheap looking reception area. She takes them to a back waiting room, where Mello notices this place looks more like a hospital. She heads off after they've settled in.
"See? They make this place look deceiving for humans. Even having one area humans are taken to that keeps up the cheap appearance. But for us who aren't human this place is better." Near explains to Mello. "This is because they specialize in nonhuman care. Thus they try to keep the humans away with fake appearances."
"Huh. I suppose that makes sense." Mello nods as he doubts many humans come here as it doesn't look like a good place at first. He almost didn't trust this place until he saw the hidden better looks.
"So. While we wait. Do you want to tell us about your idea? If that's alright. If not we can wait." A inquires clearly curious though not wanting to overstep Nears decision.
"Well my plan is that we may be able to convince Roger into helping us. With the offer of taking down an even bigger target. Someone knew how to make us go into a drugged state. That means that someone out there is intending for innocents to be hurt. This is a rather large threat on both us nonhumans and humans alike. Many can die if this person continues what they're doing."
A snorts at this. "Sorry your majesty but I don't think that's going to work. There's no way Roger will agree to helping our kind who he hates."
"I agree with A on that." Mello mentions and Near nods.
"You are right. He won't agree to help our kind. But he will agree to protect other humans. All we have to do is focus on the part of humans being hurt even killed. It may take a few tries however we should be able to wear him down with that."
A and Mello nod and share a glance when Near turns away. They're not sure that this will work however it is worth a shot even if there's a small chance. They turn away from each other to wait for news on how Matt is doing.
It takes awhile before one of the doctors that took Matt away approaches. He smiles to them. "He will be just fine. He hurt his spine when the incident happened but we were able to fix it. He will need sometime for recovery though."
"At least he will be alright." Near mentions with a thanks to the doctor.
"Can we see him?" Mello requests to which the doctor nods then turns leading the way.
All three of them follow after him.
"He may be a bit out of it as we used some anesthesia that he's still coming out of. Just to help his pain and to make sure the procedure to help him went well." The doctor informs them.
"Thank you for the heads up." Near nods softly and it isn't long before they reach the room.
The doctor doesn't enter allowing the three to head inside.
Mello is the first to be next to Matt on the hospital bed.
Matt blinks at the blonde as he stands next to the bed. "Mells!" He greats slightly slurring his words. "I love you man! You're like a part of my pack!"
"Good to know." Mello isn't sure what to say even though he knows it's probably the anesthesia.
"Mells. Mells. Mells." Matt pauses with a slight exhale before he continues. "I gotta be honest with you. I see Near as a part of my pack. It's like so cool to have like a mosquito person thing as a pack member. Someone who doesn't act like other wolves do. I don't feel the same way as with wolves with him and the other mosquito person things."
"A pleasant way to put it." A groans though doesn't seem to be holding the way Matt said it against him.
"I mean it man. You're amazing. Near too." Matt tells A looking at him before glancing around. He whimpers after noticing that there's only three here. "Where's BB? Where's the other member of my pack?"
"BB had a job to do. He's alright." Near assures Matt approaching his bed. "He'll be waiting for you to get better and I'm sure he'll visit later."
Matt does look to have relaxed at this assurance. "I may not like packs but I'm glad to have you guys in my life." He looks to the ceiling as his mind tries to come back to normal function.
"We'll take care of the territory while you recover." Near assures Matt who turns to give him a smile at this. He looks to Mello. "You can stay here with him if you want. Or you can come with us." He mentions meeting Mellos eyes when he turns to him.
Mello hesitates a moment and glances to Matt before nodding. "I'll stay for a bit. Make sure he is okay when he comes back to reality more." He explains then glances back to Near in time to see him nod. "And Near?" He gets a blink from the other. "If the talking doesn't work maybe let me try to reason with him."
Near smiles softly and nods his head. "It is worth a shot." He agrees before turning to head out. "Come A. Lets let Matt rest." He says loud enough for Matt to for sure hear so he won't stress out about them leaving.
A follows Near as they leave with that.
Mello supposes that it's good that they live where there's free healthcare. He wonders if there's a nonhuman in power that helps fund places like this. He turns away back to Matt brushing that thought out of his mind.
After all the nonhumans seem to always have a way around things they need in life.
Mello meets Matt's eyes as the red head looks at him.
"Mello?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I tell you something?"
Mello blinks curious as Matt almost seems troubled by this. "Sure. I won't tell anyone if you don't want me to."
Matt smiles looking glad to hear those words from Mello. "I have a secret. I actually have feelings for someone. Even though I know I shouldn't."
Mello is kind of curious who Matt means. "Who do you have feelings for?"
"Near. A little for you but man I would take Near over you any day for dating. No offense. You're just more like a brother to me." Matt looks a little worried before he continues. "I just know I shouldn't feel this way. We're species that usually fight. Yet there's something different about him. I don't know man." He slightly glances around. "What am I doing again?" He questions himself as if having lost his train of thought.
Mello is quiet for a moment as he processes this. He finally lets himself think of whether or not he'd actually want Matt or Near for himself. He never even really considered this before. He finds that he thinks of Matt as more of a brother than anything. His thoughts now focus on Near. Does he want the vampire? He blinks as he comes to realize that he isn't actually sure, he's actually on the fence as he wouldn't mind being with Near however he also is good to not date him. He isn't really sure what he wants to be with Near. He is a human though who is just learning about the hidden world, while Matt has been a part of this hidden world his whole life. He might not even be the best match for Near even if he does actually want him. He decides that he's going to have to think things over before encouraging Matt to say something. He also realizes he will have to consider if Matt saying something will sour things between them, he can tell that having Near the way things are is indeed important to his best friend. He doesn't want to encourage Matt only for things to be ruined for him.
Matt looks to Mello again. "Mello?" His voice helps bring the blonde out of his thoughts.
"Yeah Matt?" Mello inquires looking into those emerald green eyes.
"Do you think other humans will ever like us?"
Mello feels almost sorry for Matt. "You're tired of hiding?" He gets a slight nod.
"It can be so hard to stay in the shadows." Matt mummers a little sadly.
"Well it's probably for the best that you stay to the shadows. As much as I want to say you can come out of hiding that wouldn't be true. I may have accepted you guys, however other humans will probably be scared of you. If you want me to be honest. I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I'm glad you were honest with me." Matt hums closing his eyes for a moment. "Mm."
"You okay?" Mello inquires to which Matt nods.
"Just waking up still in my head Mells."
"Okay." Mello is glad to hear it and he looks for a chair which he finds one in the room. He pulls it up next to the bed sitting down in it. "I'll be right here." He promises. He silently hopes to himself that Near, A and B might be able to convince Roger to help them. He knows that as a hunter Roger will probably be more ready to take down the enemy than the rest of them, or at the very least be able to help track whoever it is.
If only they'll be able to convince him to help.
