Return of the Light Bringer
Summary: What if Michael was behind Priest Kinley's actions? What happens when God discovers not only those plans, but also his manipulations that lead to Lucifer's actions before the rebellion?
Disclaimer: I don't own the TV show Lucifer.
The Plot Backfires
Michael smirked as he headed toward the priest's office. He was aware of his reputation with humans as Saint Michael the Archangel who vanquished the devil and sent him to hell and had every intention to use that to his advantage. After all, what priest would refuse his orders, especially one this stupid.
Yes, everything was going according to plan. He knew this human particularly hated Lucifer and he was going to use that to his advantage. He entered the room and found the priest. He put up a front of peace. "Hello, Father Kinley," he said mildly.
"What… who… who are you?" The priest stumbled backwards. "What are you doing here, how dare you trespass."
"You misunderstand me, Father Kinley." Michael smirked internally. "I am the one you refer to as Saint Michael, the Archangel." He let his wings out to prove it.
Kinley gaped at the sight. Then he hastily bowed deeply. "Oh my, I'm so sorry. It's an honor to meet you Saint Michael."
Michael smiled. "It is of no concern. I come to you with a dire warning. The devil walks amongst the humans as we speak." He opened his arms dramatically. "You have been deemed the one worthy of sending him back to hell." The stupid human didn't need to know it would destroy Lucifer permanently.
"What? Me?" Father Kinley's eyes widened. That was massive coming from Saint Michael. "I am honored, sir. How does our Father wish for me to proceed?"
"You will find all the instructions in full detail here." Michael handed him a sheet of paper. He also grabbed the feather from his pocket he'd prepared. "And this is the feather of an Archangel you will need to complete the ceremony. You will also need a vial of blood willingly given by a miracle. She will come soon enough, and you are to convince her. Her name is Chloe Decker."
Kinley nodded. "And the devil? What name does he use here on Earth?"
"Lucifer Morningstar." Michael said. "I really must return to the Silver City now. I trust you will follow through with this?"
"Of course, I will, sir." Father Kinley bowed.

God was furious when he found Chloe Decker about to put a sedative in his son's drink. He quickly made sure the glass broke as she went to pour it. He quickly discovered that it was William Kinley who was behind her plot. He scowled. That man was a disgrace to the priesthood.
Enraged, he immediately transported himself to appear in front of Kinley. Decker wouldn't be a problem in the short time it took. He grabbed the man before he could even move. "How dare you hurt my son, you're an absolute disgrace to humanity and especially to the priesthood." He growled.
Father Kinley was taken aback. "Who… who are you? What son?" He was completely baffled.
God was now beyond furious. "I am your God, and you hurt my son Samael, the light bringer, an Archangel. Be very careful with your next words, human. To harm an Archangel is to declare war with me."
"What? I don't know anyone by the name Samael." Kinley wracked his brain, trying to think of who God could be talking about.
"No? Well, I suppose he does rather prefer to go by his title now. You would know him as Lucifer Morningstar here on Earth." God gripped the priest tighter. "Now tell me what I want to know. I have half a mind to smite you where you stand for harming one of my children."
"T… the devil?" Kinley squeaked in terror. "Father you must be mistaken. Saint Michael, the Archangel gave me explicit instructions from you for me to send him back to hell."
The room shook from God's fury. "My son is no devil. You humans took a private argument with my son and blew it way out of proportion. Now what is this about Michael?" He shook the human harshly.
Kinley was terrified. He didn't know why God was so furious, but he knew better than to provoke him further. He handed God the instructions Saint Michael had given him. "These were the instructions he gave me. He gave me a feather from an Archangel to use and told me to get a vial of blood from the miracle." He handed both objects over as well.
God saw red. He knew his sons never got along but he didn't think Michael would take it this far. In addition to feeling the truth from the priest he could feel Michael's energy from the feather. This was unquestionably given willingly for the assigned task.
He looked back at the priest in disgust. What to do with him? He had fully believed he was acting on His orders, given by an Archangel he had no reason not to trust. But He also wasn't going to allow anyone to get away with harming his son. He waved his hand to paralyze the priest before calling Azrael. Samael had a right to have a say in what happened, and he had bigger matters to attend to.
"Father?" Azrael yelped. She looked between God and the man on the floor in confusion.
"Take this man and Chloe Decker to the Silver City cells to await trial." God told her.
"Yes, Father." Azrael was still confused but wasn't going to question her father's orders.
Seeing his daughter's confusion, God decided to elaborate. "They saw fit to attack Samael. Don't feel obligated to be gentle with them. My only orders are they are to live to see trial and that they will remain in their cells separate."
Azrael growled. "You attacked my big brother? You are going to pay for attacking an Archangel, human." That was basically a declaration of war. Not to mention Lucifer was her favorite brother.
God nodded to himself as Azrael teleported away. He knew that Michael had no intention of leaving the Silver City for now. Now, he needed to grab Samael and find out from his sons exactly what had happened.
He quickly found Samael in his penthouse. "Samael." He tried to keep his voice even as Samael was innocent in this, and God knew he was the last being his son wanted to see currently.
Even still Lucifer jumped back and had his wings out from the startle and moved back before realizing who was in front of him. He scowled "Father." He bit out.
God closed his eyes. He'd regretted sending Samael to hell for a long time but hadn't had the courage to approach him. That was going to change now. "You're coming with me," he said, grabbing his son by the arm.
Lucifer yelped and tried to pull his arm away. "If you're going to send me back to hell at least let me have the dignity to do it on my own." He glared at his father.
"We're not going to hell." God said gently.
"What? You can't mean…" Lucifer didn't have time to finish the question before he was in front of the gates to the Silver City. "Let go of me! Why would you bring me here?" He hated this place.
God let his son go once he lifted the banishment. "My apologies, I had to lift your banishment before I could let you go. You would've died otherwise."
"You… what?" Lucifer stared after his father as he pushed through the gates.
"We have much to discuss, Samael." God felt guilt that Samael was surprised at the banishment being lifted. "Come with me."
"My name is Lucifer." Lucifer grumbled. But he followed anyway.
"We can certainly discuss your name if you would like after the meeting, but for right now, here you will need to use your given name." God knew his son didn't like it, but this was a formal meeting.
"What meeting?" Lucifer was confused. "Why did you bring me here, anyway?"
God sighed and brought him to his quarters briefly. He did owe Samael an explanation before it got thrown in his face in front of his brother. "Michael tried to have you killed today, using Chloe Decker and a priest she ran into in Rome. I know this is hard to accept but it is the truth. He did so under the guise of having you sent back to hell under my orders."
"He… you… what?! You sent him to…" Lucifer felt absolute fury.
"I did no such thing." God said firmly. "Which is why you are here, so I can find out what has been going on. I know there is more to this than just this plot. You have my assurances; Michael will be punished harshly."
"Wait!" Lucifer took a deep breath. "Don't send him to hell. Please?"
God stared at his son. He couldn't say the thought hadn't crossed his mind. He regretted banishing Samael, but the crimes Michael had just committed far exceeded anything any being had ever committed. And that was assuming those were his only crimes he had committed. "He tried to have you destroyed, using his position and my name to do so. Why would you not want me to send him to hell?"
"Because not even he deserves that punishment." Lucifer knew Michael would never last in hell. The demons would tear him apart for how he acted. Not to mention attempting to destroy their King. "Do you have any idea what the demons would do to him for trying to destroy me?"
God had to admit his son made a fair point. The demons had come to respect his son greatly. "Very well, I will not send him to hell, but his punishment will be very harsh. Also, you should know. As soon as I can appoint a new one, your duties as King of hell are over. I had intended to ask your friend Mazikeen however the choice is ultimately yours who you wish to take over."
Lucifer stared. "I'm not…" He immediately stopped himself. As much as he wanted to hear his father's reasoning, he wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. "Maze would be best fit for the job, yes. But doesn't a celestial have to rule hell?"
God waved it off. "I made that rule, I can also remove it. And no, Samael, you will never be expected to return to hell. I intend to return your role as an Archangel, beyond that the choices are yours." He knew his son wanted to ask but was too afraid of the answer. "You will never be banished again. You have my word. And I am so very sorry for ever sending you to hell. I reacted in anger rather than calm down first."
Lucifer's breath caught. He turned away for fear of what emotions his father would see. For as many issues as he had with his father, he knew his father never lied. It was the one trait he wasn't ashamed to share with him. His word was his bond. Deep down this was everything he'd ever wanted to hear from his father since his banishment.
God knew Samael wasn't ready to talk more about this yet. "Come, Samael."
Lucifer shook himself out of it. Right, the meeting. "Yes, Father."
