Chapter One
We Need Time

Firehouse 51, Chicago – May 9, 2018
It was clear to him now, just how much in pain his wife truly was as she digested the news that they recently got from the doctor; the doctor that was supposed to help them have the family of their dreams. But rather than help them, she just made their lives so much worse; because the truth was, Matt has never seen his wife in this state. And while she's experienced grief in the past: when they lost Shay, when they lost their first child, and then when they lost Louie; there was just something different about this time. And that was due to the fact that every single dream they had to have a family with Gabby getting pregnant was dashed with one single word. Heck, he can still remember when the doctor said it: "Gabby, I called you in here today as I wanted to tell you this in person. We've reviewed your scans, and unfortunately we have seen some problems with your ovaries." And let's just say that Matt was confused as to just what that meant, as he didn't learn much about that. However, the doctor soon explained what that meant after saying that.

She told them the worst possible news that they could ever hear. "When you suffered your ectopic pregnancy, you had a lot of bleeding that took place during that time. And based on the scans, we've deemed that it was not just due to the loss of the pregnancy; but rather, it was also due to the fact that a blood vessel connecting your heart to your ovaries malfunctioned…and has been malfunctioning since that day." And if you thought that was the worst news, as there was one worst part. "Gabby, based on this; we do not believe that you will ever be able to naturally conceive a child, which is why we advocate getting eggs out immediately to preserve your ability to have a child." And that was precisely what they did, they booked an appointment and got a couple eggs out a few days ago to preserve their ability to have a child. But recently, Matt's noticed something, which is the fact that Gabby's just been different. Both since that appointment, and since they did the egg retrieval. And he just knew in his heart that she wasn't okay.

Heck, he wasn't okay, which was something that his best friend was picking up on as he walked up behind him and placed his hand on his back. "You're still staring at her man." Turning his head, Matt sighed as he heard Severide say that as he knew that was the case; he knew that he was staring at his wife due to the fact that he was worried about her. "Yeah, I am." Kelly then proceeded to whisper in his ear. "You guys going to try for a baby in the shower when you get a chance?" Turning his head, Matt was shocked. "She told Stella?" Kelly agreed with Matt, as Gabby most certainly did tell Stella that they were trying for a baby. "Yeah, and she told me. I'm surprised that you haven't told me." Matt sighed as he turned around to face his friend, as it was no longer that simple. "Yeah, things may have changed." Kelly was confused as he heard Matt say that, unsure as to what his friend was talking about. "What are you talking about man?" Matt sighed as he heard Kelly ask him that, before turning his head once more to look at his wife and make sure she was ok.

That was, until he heard the Ambulance sounds, which meant that she would be gone for a while. Precisely what he needs to talk to his friend. To explain to him what's going on. "Mind if we go to my office?" Kelly agreed with Matt as he asked him that, clearly able to see that there was something big on Matt's mind at the moment; something that the captain really needed to talk to his best friend about so that he could make sure that he was okay, something that Kelly has been worried about. I mean, he and Gabby have just been off as of late; and he really hopes to know if there's something that he can do to make sure that they're okay again. Because the last thing that he wants is for the both of them to not be okay. For them to be having problems, without him even knowing whether they were having problems; little did Kelly know that the problems that the couple were having were much worse than anybody could ever know, and it was all related to their biggest dream: their dream of becoming parents to a child of their own someday.

Casey's Quarters – Sitting on his friend's bed shortly after making their way into his quarters, Lieutenant Severide just looked at him as he saw him staring at the picture that he has of Gabby on his desk; something that Matt does whenever he's happy with her, or when they are in a fight. And right now, Kelly can't tell which one they're in. Whether they're in a fight, or if they're in a good place. He just hopes that it's that they're in a good place, rather than have them be in a fight; something that he decided to share with his best friend. "I hope you guys aren't fighting or in a bad place, because I am not ready to put my relationship with my girlfriend on the line. I mean, I would take your side of course but…" Turning his head, Matt was surprised that his best friend was thinking about that right now. That he was thinking that he and Gabby were fighting right now. "Woah, where did you get the idea that we're fighting?" Kelly just looked at Matt as he said that, as that was the only idea that he could come up with at the time, the only reasonable explanation.

"So, you guys aren't fighting right now?"

Matt shook his head, as they aren't fighting right now. If anything, they were just being together and trying to work things out; something that they need to do right now. "We're just dealing with a lot right now, stuff that was a huge blow to Gabby." Kelly agreed with Matt as he said that. "Where do you want to start? The beginning?" Matt agreed with Kelly. "Well, the start is when Gabby was pregnant the first time around." Kelly was a bit confused as he heard Matt say that, as he had no idea how it could be related to that. "How does her having been pregnant in 2015 have anything to do with what's happening now?" Matt sighed. "Well, when they were trying to save Gabby's life the first time, they nicked an artery." Kelly remembered that nodding. "I remember that, she had to go back to surgery to fix it." Matt nodded. "Unfortunately, that was the worst artery that you could hit; as it was the artery that connects Gabby's ovaries to her heart." Kelly was a bit confused as he heard Matt say that, not really the best when it comes to anatomy.

Especially the anatomy of a woman. "OK. I love having sex with women, but I am not that aware of the anatomy." Matt agreed with Kelly, as he had to learn too. "The ovaries create eggs." Kelly looked at him. "Eggs?" Matt just groaned as he leaned back in his chair. "God, you're hopeless; so, let me really dumb it down for you: Gabby can't get pregnant." Kelly then understood. "Why didn't you say that in the first place?" Matt sighed. "You really think we want to advertise that Gabby can't get pregnant? When she literally got pregnant when we had a night of passion? Dude, she got pregnant when we were broken up!" Kelly realized that too. "Yeah, so that makes sense." Matt agreed. "Just to let you know, this stays here; we aren't interested in advertising this." Kelly was confused as he heard his best friend say that. "Dude, women deal with infertility all the time." Matt sighed. "Kelly, I got her pregnant during a night of passion when we were broken up; now that we're married, shouldn't it be just as easy?" Kelly thought about it and agreed with Matt.

"And this is all you need to know, it's not for a lack of trying to have a baby that we aren't pregnant."

Kelly smirked as he heard Matt say that, well aware what that means. It means that his best friend has been getting lucky in the sheets with his wife. "You must love that." Matt just looked at Kelly as he said that. "Dude, it's not as glamorous as it sounds." Kelly laughed, as he didn't believe that. "Yeah, because I'm going to believe that you hate the sex." Matt snickered. "Oh, I love the sex. Don't get me wrong, it's the other thing I don't like." Kelly was confused as he heard Matt say that. "Explain." Matt sighed. "The disappointing look on her face when she takes the pregnancy test, only to see that it's negative." Kelly then realized that. "Oh, I remember that face." Matt was confused as he heard Kelly say that. "When did you try and get a woman pregnant? You've never been married…" Kelly then went to say that he has been. "Well, I…" Matt then put his hand up. "That was a three-week marriage based on nothing more than sex. Me and Gabby have been married for a year and a half and have dealt with near-death experiences since our engagement."

Kelly agreed with Matt as he said that. "And a horrible stalker." Matt groaned as he heard Kelly say that. "Don't remind me. Oh, and guess what week that fell on?" Kelly was confused as he heard Matt say that. "What week?" Matt sighed. "It was a week where she was ovulating." Kelly sighed as he heard Matt say that, before shaking his head as he already knew what meant; it meant that it was a week where they could've gotten pregnant (maybe), if not for the problems that they now know that they have. "Honestly, I just have no idea what we need right now." Kelly laughed. "Sounds like you guys need some time off to really take some time with each other." Matt was about to say something due to the fact that he thought his friend was going to say something stupid, but he actually just said something that was a really good idea; for them to take time off due to the fact that it was what they needed to do. "You know, I was about to say that was a bad idea; but that most certainly is a good one, thanks Kelly." Kelly smiled and agreed with his friend, nodding.

"See, not just a pretty face."

Matt snickered as he heard Kelly say that. "Yeah, we'll see how you do when it comes to your relationship with Stella. Because I swear to god, you better not screw it up. The last thing I am going to have to deal with is drama between one of my men, and my Squad lieutenant. And yes, you are my squad lieutenant due to the fact that you answer to me." Kelly agreed with Matt, before going to play with him. "Aye, Aye, Captain." Matt shook his head as he heard Kelly say that before getting up so that he can go talk to Chief Boden. "Get up and out of my office. I am going to talk to Chief." Kelly agreed with Matt as he said that. "I think that's a good idea." Matt agreed with Kelly as he watched him leave his office, before going to walk out behind him so that he can make his way to Chief Boden's office so that he can talk to him about getting some time off for both him and his wife; after all, he thinks they deserve it after all this time. Heck, he hasn't even taken Gabby on a honeymoon yet. So, maybe now's the time to take her on a honeymoon.

Chief Boden's Office – Walking up to Boden's office this morning, Matt took a breath as he didn't know whether he was going to be able to do this for him and Gabby; but at least he already had one thing going for him. He already practiced what he had to say to Boden by talking to Severide, something that he's come to appreciate now. But now that he's here, it just seems to daunting, asking him for some time off for both him and Gabby. I mean, does she have to do this; should he talk to her first? All he knows is that he thinks this is something that they need to do. They need to take some time with each other so that they can sort a bunch of things out right now. He just hopes that he can understand and let him, and Gabby take this time that they need. "Hey Chief, have a minute?" Turning his head to look up at Casey, Boden agreed as he always has a moment for his Captain. "Of course, come in Casey." Matt agreed with Boden as he carried in some paperwork which he needs to give him. "Here, I owe you this too." Chief agreed.

Grabbing it from his Captain, he proceeded to look over it to see just what it was. "OK. I will look over this. Is this all?" Matt shook his head, as there was more. "Do you mind if we talk for a moment?" Boden agreed with Matt, clearly able to see that there was something on his Captain's mind at the moment, which is why he's more than ready to talk to him. "Sure, how about you sit?" Matt agreed with Boden, as he made his way over to the door first so that he could close it. After all, this was something that he didn't want the entire house to hear about. Rather, it was something for only him and Chief Boden to hear. "Let me guess, something serious?" Matt sighed as he soon walked over to the chairs that Chief Boden had in his office so that he could sit down, as this was a serious topic. "Yeah, it's about Gabby." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, well aware that was something they needed to talk about. "I have been meaning to ask. I know you wouldn't let her work if she wasn't okay, but I can see that she's off recently." Matt agreed.

After all, the last thing that he was going to do was deny the obvious; and that would be the fact that his wife was not fit for service at the moment, nor was he. And that was why he was here at the moment. He was here to talk to Chief Boden about what's been going on in their lives. "It's why I would like to talk to you." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, deciding to give him his full attention when it came to what he needed at the moment. "Is there something that I need to know when it comes to you and Gabby? Are you guys okay?" Matt sighed as he looked at his chief, well aware that he couldn't lie to him. Yet, he just didn't want to reveal too much; but he decided that he should also know the same (if not more) than Kelly as he's in charge of keeping them safe. "So, listen, this is a lot and I would like to just get through it. It's a lot of information." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, deciding to do what he thinks Matt needs him to do at the moment, which would be to listen to him as he speaks about what's been going on.

And the truth was, that was precisely what Matt needed Boden to do. He needed him to listen without interrupting him, so that he could make sure that he said everything correctly. So that he could ensure that he was being accurate in his statements and not worry about something being said wrong. But still, he decided to go for it. "So, you may or may not have noticed that me and Gabby have been a bit…off recently." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, as that was the truth. "Yeah, I have, which is why I asked if you were okay. Problems in the marriage?" Matt shook his head. "More like health problems." Boden then got worried. "Wait, are you guys…" Matt then put his hands up. "OK. Slow down chief as we're both okay. We haven't been diagnosed with anything and you're not loosing us." Boden was relieved as he heard Matt say that, glad that was the case. "So, what's up?" Matt sighed. "You remember when Gabby lost our first baby? You were there at OFI?" Boden agreed with Matt, remembering that day as clearly as ever.

God, that day really tested the couple even before they were married. "Yeah, I remember that. So sorry about all that." Matt agreed. "Well, it turns out that day has even more unintended consequences to this day." Boden was confused as he heard Matt say that. "OK. Not following." Matt sighed. "While she was in surgery, they nicked an artery that provides blood-flow to her ovaries." Boden just looked at Matt. "Should I really know this?" Matt sighed. "It's relevant." Boden nodded. "OK. Let me say this. Me and Gabby have been trying to have a baby recently." Boden smiled as he heard Matt say that. "Congratulations, that's great news. Wait, are you…" Matt shook his head. "Emphasis on the word trying. We recently went to a fertility doctor to see what was wrong. They told us her ovaries are malfunctioning and they say Gabby can't get pregnant naturally." It was just then that Boden realized just how grave the news that Matt and Gabby got truly was. "Oh dear. And I know how much you've always wanted kids." Matt agreed with Boden, sighing.

He then went to tell him the truth. "Listen, I tried to stay quiet about it; because I thought that Gabby was okay. She seemed okay, but…" Matt then tried to think about what he was saying and how to word it. "You know how you get that feeling in your gut sometimes. That gut feeling that just tells you that your wife isn't okay, but she doesn't want to admit that she isn't okay? That she's just pushing past the pain, and trying to pretend that she's okay?" Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, starting to understand more of where this conversation is headed. "You think Gabby's dealing with that." Matt sighed. "The truth is, I don't think she ever truly recovered from loosing the baby and then Louie. She never recovered, and she just hasn't the same since. And this news has just devasted us, and it's changed our world." Boden agreed, as this news really has changed their world. "The truth is, I was actually hoping that it was me that was having problems. That it was my fault. And honestly, I wished it was." Boden agreed with Matt.

After all, what husband wants to watch his wife go through the pain of knowing that she's the one that can't get pregnant? That can't give her husband the child that he's always wanted? "And I don't want to say that she feels pressure to get pregnant. But it's no secret that I've always wanted to be a father." Boden snickered as he heard Matt say that, even though it was the worst time for him to snicker. "Matt, I'm sorry, that was the worst possible time for me to snicker; but we all know that's the truth that you've always wanted to be a father. And nobody will ever be able to deny that." Matt agreed with Boden, as he was well aware that was the case. "And that's where I can see Gabby really struggling, as she's known that since before we were married. Since before we were ever an item." Boden agreed. "Truth is, I never liked Hallie for you." Matt just looked at Boden as he said that. "She reminded me of my first wife. Possessive, controlling." Matt thought about it. "She wasn't…" Boden just gave Matt a bit of side-eye as Matt tried to deny it.

Tried to deny that Hallie wasn't possessive and controlling. "Matt, she wore your engagement ring even when you weren't engaged; and she strung you along for years, when you didn't want the same things. She didn't want a baby, yet she still wanted to marry you and told you that she may want a baby sometime. Let's be honest, she never wanted to get pregnant with your child." Playing with his wedding band, Matt snickered as he soon started to see that was the case. "Yeah, I can see that now. And even better, I have a wife who wants to get pregnant with my child; but who has problems doing so." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, which is something that still breaks his heart due to the fact that he knows just how great parents the two of them would be. "I hate to say this, but have you guys looked into adoption?" Matt sighed. "We can't. God, did I ever tell you when we first met Andre?" Boden was confused. "Who's Andre again?" Matt sighed. "Louie's biological father." Boden then realized that. "Oh, right." Matt agreed.

Taking a breath, Matt played with his wedding band before telling him the story. "We met him on our doorstep, on our wedding night." Boden just shuttered at the idea of that. "Oh, now that's not fun." Matt agreed with Boden as he said that. "Yeah, that was a scary thought. Still hate it. And him for how he ruined my wedding night." Boden was confused as he heard Matt say that. "Seriously? It was our wedding night! I don't care if Donna was pregnant, we both know that wanted to have the traditional wedding night!" Boden sighed. "Matt, Shay died that day." Matt nodded, well aware that was the case. "Yeah, during the call that interrupted my proposal!" Boden then realized that. "Oh yeah." Matt nodded, as that was the case. "Yeah. Trust me, that was a horrible summer." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that. "And this summer isn't starting out great so far." Matt nodded. "Yeah. And that's why I'm here. I just feel like it's time." Boden was confused as he heard Matt say that. "Time for what?" Matt smiled as he looked at Boden this morning.

"It's time for me and Gabby to take some time, time that we should've taken a while back. The weeks we should've taken after Shay died, after we lost the baby, and after we got married. Heck, maybe even after I almost died a year ago."

Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, as he and Gabby certainly have earned some time off. "Yeah, you guys sure have gone through a lot in the past four years." Matt agreed with Boden. "A death, a miscarriage, loosing a child, almost dying, and then this news." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that, as that truly can take a toll on a marriage. "That can take a toll on a marriage." Matt nodded. "Add in the fact that we only get like twelve hours together every two-three day, and that is not enough for a marriage." Boden was confused. "Twelve hours?" Matt nodded. "Sleep and the bar." Boden realized that and nodded. "I know I've only been a captain for seven months. But I'm seven months away from my second wedding anniversary and I've yet to take my wife on a honeymoon. Heck, or just done anything." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that. "So, you want some time off?" Matt sighed as he agreed with his chief, as that was precisely what he wanted. He wanted some time off with his wife, time alone with her.

"I feel like me and Gabby really need to take time away and not have to worry about anything. And by time away, I mean away. I want to take her out of the city or something. Heck, you remember that trip to New York City in 2016?"

Boden agreed with Matt, as he does remember that. "Yeah, we went together." Matt agreed. "That was the last time that I left Chicago. Heck, one of the only times I left Chicago. And it was with you instead of my wife. I have never taken my own wife on a trip outside the city limits, let alone time where we can be romantic with each other. Time where we can concentrate on each other without any disturbances." Boden agreed with Matt as he said that. "How long are you thinking?" Matt sighed. "That's the thing, I have no idea. I just know that we aren't in the mindset to work right now. We just have too much on our minds, and I'm worried that we're going to get hurt on the job. So, I just feel like we need to take some time off. I don't know how long, or what we're going to do but…" Boden agreed with Matt. "You just need to take time away with your wife." Matt agreed. "And Boden, I mean weeks away. I know it's a lot to ask, but I think we just need that. Time where it's just us and our thoughts. No interruptions." Boden agreed.

"I promise to work my magic for you guys."

Matt agreed with Boden as he said that, before getting up and reaching over to shake his hand. "That's all I could ask for." Boden smiled as he heard Matt say that, well aware that was the case.
