Hi, my lovely people!
I decided not to update The Anteline Pearl this week but I think the next chapter should probably be out next week - I promise, it's not going to end up being abandoned for months again.
This is just a little story (I think it will be three chapters, most likely) which follows Finn and Fontaine working together as the amazing duo that we know them to be. I've been working on this for (what seems like) an insanely long time and I've been planning it for even longer but yay, it's finally ready to post and I'm so excited to see what you think. So, without further ado, I want to say:
I hope you enjoy!
Fontaine was focused.
Her face was slightly scrunched up in concentration as she worked on the final steps of her plan. Ant had been irritating her more than usual lately: pulling random pranks; jumping out at her; aggravating her with Jeffrey; and just generally being annoying.
She had followed the regular steps of 'How to live with Ant being annoying' which were:
1) Ignore him
2) If that doesn't work - go out for a long swim for some time alone whilst Ant is distracted 'hanging out' with Jeffrey
3) If that doesn't work - try ignoring him again
4) If that doesn't work - eat all the cookies
5) If he works out that it was you - hide out in your bedroom
6) If he still manages to find you - hide out in the vents.
7) If he won't stop pestering you and finds a way to disable the mute button on your comm so you have to hear him over the radio All. The. Time - Tell Dad.
8) If that doesn't work - tell Mum
9) If he still won't stop - find a new sub to live on, but it should work, telling mum always works
Fontaine had completed up to step seven as she was always hesitant to carry out step eight , it was almost like an unwritten yet sacred rule among siblings, sibling rivalry always stays among siblings until absolute desperation.
Sure, she had told Dad, and he did tell Ant to stop, although both Fontaine and Ant (and probably her father) knew that Ant was never going to listen to that.
She had been coping decently (by which she meant, not completely awfully) with him, mainly just hiding out in either the vents, her bedroom, or her secret room, up until just over a week ago when he had crossed a line.
And so, she had decided that she was going to prank him back - it was about time she retaliated to at least one of her brother's many pranks: she felt that she deserved her revenge on him.
She had been working on this idea for a long time, staying up late at night and waking up early in the mornings, just so that she could work on her idea without being interrupted or found out.
Much to her horror, Fontaine had discovered that Ant invaded her privacy a lot more than she had previously thought. She had discovered this when she had been about to get out her guitar from its usual place by the side of her bed when she saw crumbs on the floor. This confused her as she rarely ate in her room and when she did, she rarely made mess and if she did, she always made sure to clean it up.
The crumbs seemed to lead a trail, which she tentatively followed, taking her to her bed. She frowned when she realised the crumbs went under her bed and she crouched down to look. She let out a slight yelp and jumped back in mild fear and shock when she saw a pair of eyes staring back at her, and stumbled backwards until she eventually crawled forwards, realising what she had seen.
"Ant!" She near-yelled at him, "What are you doing? " she asked, quietening down slightly, her voice now dangerously calm.
"Ah, ha ha," Ant laughed nervously, "Well, um, you see, "
"Never mind, I don't want to hear it, just go," Fontaine moved backwards and stood up to give her brother space to emerge from his hiding place, pointing in the direction of the door .
"Uh, Fontaine, I don't -" Ant sounded confused and quite honestly rather scared that his sister may kill him before he could make it out of her room alive.
" Out! " Fontaine almost snapped, pointing at the door again.
Ant nodded quickly in terror and slid out from under the bed, however as he moved out from the right space, he failed to hide what he has been looking at and he accidentally pushed it out from under the bed.
"Wait!" Fontaine said suddenly, noticing the book that had come to the light as she knelt it down to pick it up, "Is this my diary?"
Ant actually look quite terrified at that, "Um, diary? What diary? I didn't see any diary under there,"
Fontaine looked up from the book with a face like thunder.
"ANT!" She yelled.
And with that, her brother ran for it, and he was right to run, it was probably his best and safest option - Fontaine was close behind him - and he spent the next three days running out of a room whenever Fontaine entered it and running into a room just after she had left it.
She could deal with the pranks and jump scares and the general being annoying but reading her diary? That was crossing a line.
Since that, Fontaine had kept almost all of her secret and private possessions in the vents: it was the safest place.
Logically, she knew that her family could theoretically, probably fit in them but the chances of her mum climbing through the vents was highly unlikely and just the thought of her Dad trying to crawl through the tight, confined spaces made her laugh. Admittedly, she was fairly certain that Ant could travel through the vents as much as he wanted, since despite his abnormally large head, he was still relatively able to fit through tiny spaces. However, Fontaine spent a lot of time in the vents (it was her secret escape from her family - mainly Ant) and she had never once bumped into him so she doubted he went in there often, if ever.
One of the vent entrances was in her room, safely hidden behind her guitar case when she wasn't crawling through the vents, so Fontaine had permanently borrowed a medium-sized wooden crate from Professor Fiction, placed her diary and a few other odds and ends she didn't want her brother, or just her family in general, to find inside and then hidden it just inside the vent, not so close to the entrance that it was in the way but not so far inside that it was a struggle to reach.
Her secret room became her second home, her secret world, finally, her own space.
Suddenly, a loud, unfortunately familiar beeping awoke Fontaine from her trance of focus.
"Ugh," she groaned as she accepted the call, not even bothering to check who was calling - in all honesty, she had almost no doubts on who it was calling her.
She should never have started answering his calls in the first place and she definitely should have stopped long ago but she couldn't help it, there was something almost therapeutic about accepting the calls and ranting about whatever was annoying her lately.
"What do you want, Pirate Boy?" She asked, the second the call connected.
"Hey, Fontaine, did you miss me?" Finn asked, his usual grin plastered all over his face.
I hope you liked this first chapter! This fic has been a work in progress for months! I will admit, the story changed a lot while writing (which I'm not complaining about) but I think the old idea still has a lot of potential so if you like this story, let me know if you want me to write another one similar to how I originally planned it.
I also wanted to ask for your opinions: I can either update The Anteline Pearl next week or I can post the next chapter for this fic - let me know which you'd prefer.
Thank you so much for reading, I'd love to hear what you thought.
Until next time! :D
