Jamie couldn't believe it. The last baby he'd delivered at the end of his shift weighed a whopping 13 pounds and 6 ounces. It baffled him because the woman who gave birth to this little girl was tiny. The woman whose name was Jerica Stevens was only a mere four and a half feet tall and at the beginning of her pregnancy weighed 90 pounds. It had been a long day and he was beat. Coming out of Jerica's room, Jamie spotted Linda.
"Linda? What are you doing up here?"
Linda gave Jamie a smile.
"Just getting a patient settled. You off shift soon? You look tired."
Jamie nodded and felt like he was dragging himself down the hallway. Linda followed next to him towards the elevators.
"Just finished actually. I'm baffled by the baby I just delivered. A little girl named Jessica who weighed 13 pounds and 6 ounces. The mother didn't have Gestational diabetes, and we checked Jessica's sugar. It was normal. It baffles me because the mother is only four and a half feet tall, and at the beginning of her pregnancy was only 90 pounds."
Linda nodded and pushed the button to close the elevator doors.
"I would hope she asked for an epidural. The pain alone without it would've been extremely excruciating."
Jamie shook his head and turned his head to look into Linda's blue eyes.
"She went without the epidural. I asked twice. She had such a tiny bone structure, for a minute or two I thought the baby was going to get stuck. Didn't happen though. Surprisingly she only needed 5 stitches."
Linda nodded as the elevator dinged and the doors opened up, revealing the first floor of the hospital.
"Well, I'm off in a few, do you want us to give you a lift home?"
Jamie nodded.
"Thanks Linda. I don't think my feet can carry me to the subway today."
Linda flashed him a smile and disappeared towards the women's locker room. Jamie let out a long and tired breath and headed towards the men's locker room. He didn't want to sit down for too long, he might fall asleep.
It was Sunday and the Reagan's had all gathered for their weekly dinner together. Everyone had already put food on their plates and they prayer said. Frank was the first to speak after taking a bite of his Spaghetti.
"So, how was everyone's week?"
Sean was the first to speak up.
"I got an A on my spelling test."
Frank smiled and nodded.
"That's good Sean. Good grades show dedication and hard work."
Jack was the next to speak.
"Well, I scored a goal in soccer. Best game ever."
Frank kept smiling and then looked over at Danny.
"What about you Danny?"
Danny looked up tiredly at his father and gave a grunt.
"16 open cases and Baez and I collared a ringleader of a very large coke ring. Working with narcotics is like pulling teeth. They think their god's gift to society."
This solicited an eye roll from Linda next to him. She was the next to speak up. Changing the subject.
"Oh, hey Jamie, I heard about that crash C-section you did in the ER last week. Did the mother and baby make it?"
Jamie stuffed another forkful of spaghetti into his mouth and then swallowed, giving Linda his answer.
"The mother needed 6 units of blood. She almost bled out in the trauma room. It was hairy for a few minutes, but I got it under control. She was released from the hospital yesterday. Her daughter Rosie, she's in the NICU for the next month. Her lungs were developed enough. She's a fighter though."
Nicky spoke up from the other side of the table next to Erin.
"Have you ever lost a patient Uncle Jamie?"
Jamie shifted his gaze down to his plate for a minute and then looked Nicky in the eye.
"I have. But that's the one percent grief and loss. 99 percent of it is pure joy."
Nicky nodded her head and kept eating. Erin smirked and looked at her brother.
"Ok Jamie, I'm just throwing this one out there. What's the biggest baby you've delivered so far?"
Slight chuckles came from both Jamie and Linda. Jamie put his fork down for a minute and looked Erin in the eye.
"The last baby I delivered last night. She weighed 13 pounds and 6 ounces. 32 inches long. Get this, her mother is only four and a half feet tall. Delivered her daughter Jessica without an epidural. Even though I strongly advised it. Twice."
Erin made a face and spoke.
"Ouch. Here I thought Nicky was heavy weighing in at 7 pounds and 8 ounces."
Danny butted in put his two cents.
"Well, isn't this refreshing. My little brother the baby doctor. I thought for sure you would've joined the family business and become a cop. You would've made a great one."
Jamie pointed a fork at Danny and smirked.
"I'm an Obstetrician. That's the correct term."
Danny shrugged his shoulders and spoke through his bite of spaghetti.
"Whatever. Baby doctor sounds better."
This elicited an eye roll from Jamie.
