Chapter 13
2 days later
Once again she is standing in front of the hospital. She has tied a colorful hair band around her dark curls and put on a tunic. She has the syringe in her tunic pocket. This time he would not escape her. She moves through the hospital as if it were a matter of course. Always the cleaning cart at her side. No one pays any attention to her.
The policeman outside Steve's door also gives her a friendly nod as she enters the room with the floor mop. Then she stands by his bed. This time she would administer the poison directly to him.
Just then, Dr. Carter sees a cleaning crew disappear into Steve's room. He thinks about it for a moment, the cleaning crew usually came on Fridays. With a few steps he is at the door and rushes into the room with the policeman.
She is about to turn to the cannula when the door is pulled open and someone shouts 'What are you doing? When she turns around, the doctor and the officer are already in the room. The officer points a gun at her, "Drop the syringe."
Cursing softly, she does as she's told. The officer pulls out his handcuffs and puts them on her. Then he bags the syringe, radioes in the arrest and asks to be transferred to Five-0.
Dr. Carter has long since turned his attention back to his patient. However, the commander is lying there unchanged and his values are stable. They had come soon enough. Dr. Carter takes a breath.
Surprised, the friends look up when suddenly an officer with a woman is standing with them at HQ.
"Officer Lee arrested her when she tried to poison the commander."
He hands Danny the evidence bag with the syringe and one with the contents of her pockets, including a car key. Astonished, Danny looks at him. Now he feels even more sorry that he had approached Lee like that. Danny has the syringe taken down to the lab right away, but he already suspects what the yellowish liquid is.
"Is the commander okay?" The officer just nods and says goodbye.
They take the woman to the interrogation room and let her stew for a while. In the meantime, they check her fingerprints. They match the ones in Lynn's house and in the storage unit. It's the 'wrong' Lynn.
Kono and Catherine grab the car keys and drive to the hospital. They quickly find the Suburban and search it. In the trunk they find two suitcases and a laptop bag. They check the suitcases.
The first one is filled for a trip. In an outside pocket they find a one-way ticket to Cuba. When they open the other suitcase, they almost throw up. Lynn's sightless eyes stare back at them. Kono calls in forensics and Max.
Kono is about to head back to the car to bring the laptop to HQ when she sees Catherine's gaze keep wandering over to the hospital.
"Go to him and make sure he's okay. The laptop isn't going anywhere."
"How...?"
"The concern is written all over your face." Catherine nods.
"Thank you, Kono." Briefly, she hugs her friend, then walks across the parking lot to the hospital.
Catherine greets the officer in the hallway and thanks him for his attention. He shakes his head and admits that Dr. Carter had noticed the cleaner, he was just making the arrest.
"Still, they responded immediately, and that was the most important thing."
Arriving at Steve's bedside, she gently strokes her Seal's head. She wishes so much that he would finally come back to them. After a few minutes, she kisses him on the forehead and goes to the parking lot to drive back to HQ with Kono.
After a while, Danny and Chin go downstairs to question the woman. When they open the door, she is sitting bent over in the chair, there is vomit on the floor in front of her, and there is a faint smell of bitter almonds in the air. Danny is with her in a few steps, but there is already no pulse and her skin already feels cool. She must have already poisoned herself shortly after they brought her into the room.
Damn, why didn't they question her right away. So still don't know why she wanted to kill Steve.
Disappointed, Chin and Danny arrive back at the hall just as Catherine and Kono enter the HQ. Briefly, they bring each other up to date. Max has already sent the brief report of his necropsy of the 'wrong' Lynn. She must have already had several surgical procedures that changed her appearance. The last procedure was only a few days ago, the stitches still fresh. Killed herself with a cyanide capsule hidden in her tooth. Danny shakes his head.
"I thought this kind of thing only existed in the movies."
They take care of the laptop. It is well secured, but after a few hours Catherine has cracked it. She has connected the laptop to the table, so everyone can see the contents.
Everything they need is there. A wealth of photos and other information are included, as well as the last job including the client. Kono immediately starts a query in the system. It is a Russian oligarch. But the computer finds no connection at all between him and Steve.
When Catherine opens the next file, they can't believe their eyes.
"That's not true now, is it?"
"Do I understand that correctly? This was never actually about Steve?"
"Looks like it."
"The 'wrong' Lynn was supposed to go to someone else entirely. A Steven McGareth.
According to the documents here, he is a Russian agent and she was supposed to check if he had defected. And then she got the order to eliminate him."
"And apparently no one has noticed the mix-up yet."
The friends look at each other in disbelief. Then Catherine picks up the phone and calls her contact at the agency.
In the evening Catherine receives the call that the Russian has been arrested. Finally, they can breathe a sigh of relief. Steve is no longer in danger.
