CH 8
By the time Kanae got back to Mrs. Perkins room from visiting personnel, a check of the chart showed Mrs. Perkins again, was doing a bit better. It was getting later, so she and Randy left to go have dinner.
Walking down the street to a steak house, Kanae beamed, "I'll pay tonight, I got me a job at the hospital!"
"Great! So do I call you Doctor Kanae now?" Randy asked.
"Not sure," Kanae said in a musing tone. "I'm kinda an on call, non surgical surgeon."
"That's original. So what's with swimmer Nancy? First she browbeats you into racing her, then she's all gaga over a book your Granddad is in and hangs all over you?"
Kanae winced. "Seems really strange that lady put Grandpa in a book, but Nancy thinks it's all true. What's worse is though even I'm sure she used to be a guy, she really is a girly girl."
Randy shrugged. "There's all kinds of people in the world." With a grin, he asked, "Think she wants to date your Grandfather?"
Kanae stopped and stared at him. "That's too gross to even think about!"
Randy laughed. "It is funny."
"Nay! Maybe I gotta beat yer head on a lamp post."
They walked on a bit then Kanae grumbled, "That's gonna gi'me nightmares."
Randy couldn't help but chuckle.
.
Getting back to her room, Kanae saw Tracy lying on her bed. "Tracy! I was wonderin what happened to ya." Seeing Tracy staring at the ceiling, she asked, "Ya OK?"
"I gotta quit college," Tracy monotoned.
Kanae sat on her bed. "Why? What happened?"
Tracy let out a snort. "Met a boy from home I'd liked a month ago. We got a little drunk and screwed our brains out. Went for my physical, and found out I'm pregnant. Mom says I can't be in college now, so they're going to stop paying my tuition. I can come home and take care of my own baby, or get an abortion."
"That doan seem fair," Kanae replied. "Do ya want this baby?"
Tracy frowned. "I do, but having it means I can't stay in college. Bill wants it too. I'm fucked, Kanae."
"Kin ya git a loan? Work something out wit admin? There must be something ya kin do. How much ya owe?"
"Thirty five thousand. There's no way in hell I can cough up that much."
"I got a job at the hospital, any way ya kin find some work?"
Tracy threw and arm up and sat up. "There's nothing I can do! I've never had a regular job, I know I'm not pretty enough to work at the strip clubs, and no one hires pregnant women!"
Thinking, Kanae asked, "Which semester ya owe fer?"
"Spring, and it's due before March tenth. There's no way I can get thirty five thousand before then."
Kanae asked, "How's this, git what ya kin outta Bill, and apply for every grant an loan ya kin think of. Even if it's cleaned rooms, try ta find work doin something. If yer getting close to the deadline, I'll pony up some fer ya. Ya kin pay me back when yer able."
Tracy eyed Kanae. "You'd do that?"
"This is yer life we're talkin bout," Kanae said firmly. "If ya quit college now, it'll be damn hard ta make it back. If Bill will help ya with the baby, I'll help ya git ta graduation. Ya gotta work hard, Tracy, but if ya really want yer education and yer baby, it's the only option you got. Whatever ya do I beg ya, doan give up."
Tracy got up and went over to hug Kanae. "I got a chance! Thank you, Kanae, thank you!"
Kanae patted her back. "Ya just go try hard as ya kin. Long as ya do, I'll support ya."
"You really are a good friend."
"Hey, friends help friends, just doan give up on me, or yerself."
The weekend came and although Randy was hoping to spend it with her, Kanae knew she had a scum bag to go case out. David agreed to take her to where Mr. scum lived so she could see the place. He also found intel where he was going to be for a meeting on Sunday. Kanae wanted to go there.
It was a six hour drive to the convention center. It wasn't boring though because he'd brought the building plans for the place for Kanae to study.
Looking them over, Kanae said, "I suppose there's gonna be max security and cameras all over the place."
"There is," David agreed. "As well as metal detectors and a strict guest list. There's going to be traffic control in all the lots all around the building. They usually have roof watches too."
"Ain't makin this easy, are they?"
"Nope," David agreed. "He's one of the most hated men there is by some. He's going to keep himself safe and he pays big to do so."
Kanae nodded absently. "I kin see why this is worth so much. How many are comin?"
"Between the guards and the Kanto's men? We've seen up to 70."
"We're talkin grand slaughter then."
"We are, and the emergency generators are inside. Cutting power is not an option," David stated. "The security control room is a steel box, you can be sure there will be guards on the doors there too. You're the only one we can think of who has a chance to get in there."
Studying the layout Kanae said, "The security room is above the main floor. I imagine all the cameras are wired into that security room."
"Yes, and they have a direct link to the police department."
Kanae nodded absently again. She was working out how to get in there. As they neared the city. She said, "I'll have ta spend the night inside. Stop by a store so I kin git some snacks."
.
With Kanae gone off on a 'job', Randy was feeling lost. He went to the hospital to see Mrs. Perkins. Two of her children, in their forties as well, were visiting her. Both women were talking to their mother. Randy went in and looked at the chart. He noted her sugar level had gone down and her kidney function had improved.
"OH! are you the doctor?" one woman asked.
"He's a young one," the other said critically.
Mrs. Perkins said, "No, he's Kanae's friend. Randy, is Kanae coming by today?"
Randy looked up from the chart. "No, Ma'am, she's got other things she needs to do. She should be back Monday. Your chart's looking better. How are you feeling?"
"Somewhat better. The pain's less." Mrs. Perkins said. "You're gonna marry that girl, ain't ya?"
Randy shrugged. "We're just concentrating on college now."
Mrs. Perkins waggled a finger at him. "You need to make that girl happy! She's a true angel, and deserves the best. Make sure she gets it."
"Mom, you've had surgery? Haven't you? That's what we heard."
"Not normal surgery, That Kanae sat here and has been pulling the cancer right outta me. Other than a twinge and a tickle, I didn't feel nothing either. I'm telling you, that girl is an angel. The one doctor was ready to give up on me, but Kanae's been making me better."
"Mom, there's no such things as angels." one woman said firmly.
"Then you tell me how she's been doing it." Mrs. Perkins asked.
"Yack yack yack," the old man grumbled as he came in. "Hey girls, glad you could make it." He smiled at Randy. "Randy, where's the pink haired wonder?"
"Hey, Mr Perkins. Kanae had another job today. She'll be back Monday."
"Dad, do you think this Kanae is really an angel?"
"Don't know what else to call her," the old man stated. "Never seen someone that pale, or with red eyes before. She just looks at yer ma and the cancer flies out! She did it right here when I was talkin to your ma too."
Randy left to let the old folks talk. He decide to go do something before they started asking him too many questions.
Not sure what to do, he headed back to campus to do some studying. Seeing the college papers for sale, he got one. It showed the pool with the headlines, 'It's official! The fastest swimmer by official timing is Kanae Kikumura.' He read how she'd just not broke the record, but made a new school record that many thought a motorboat couldn't beat. It was also mentioned that besides being a top scoring medical student, she also liked romance novels.
He was sure Kanae wanted to read about that.
.
Kanae had David get a hotel room to wait for her in, then after dark, had him dive on a near by side street past the convention center. The outside side wall were corrugated deep enough so she could get a grip. She had him slow, but not stop. Passing an area where there was no street light, Kanae climbed out and jumped off the moving car to grip the wall. Satisfied she wasn't going to fall, she moved up the wall and over to above the security center.
On the upper roof, she found the vent duct down into security. She pulled it off and once inside, put it back on. She also felt someone inside. Getting down into the chamber with the air filters to the AC unit, she saw a form on the floor.
"Figured it was you," a familiar voice said.
"Mom?" she asked, trying to see her mother in the dark.
Kaede giggled. "Well you always said you wanted to come help me in the dirty jobs. Looks like you did it."
"But, I thought I was the only one the Americans asked for help from?"
"I'm werkin fer the British, hon. I doubt they coordinated on purpose. Still, wit two of us, it'll be quicker. So, what's yer plan?"
Kanae settled down near her mother. "There's gonna be a ton a people here, at least 70 players, and all kinds of security. The only way I could think ta git in, was git in this way early, wait fer'em to come in an check things out, then once they're doing their thing, we go out the service door, break the wall down ta the security room, kill the guards, smash the monitors, then jump straight down and start takin'em out as fast as possible."
"Not bad," Kaede agreed. "Steada takin the time ta destroy the monitors though, rip out the cables ta the cameras. Also there's four guards inside security an another two outside. First thing, is getting out through the access door fast. Chop heads off inside, then rips the cable part, Then git out and chop the two guards right outside. Clear our backs, then jump down swingin fast as ya kin. The old bald guy is the main target, but ta git outta here, we're gonna be fast as possible and kill everyone ya see quick as ya kin. They got guns too so keep a mind hand shield up over ya. Block the doors shut if ya kin also. Doan fergit bout the reporters either. Destroy every hand held camera ya see. This is gunna be a frantic race at wipe'em out then be gone. Nay pausin fer nothin."
"Aye," Kanae agreed softly.
Kaede showed a watch with a glowing face and hands. They're suppose ta start takin stations at seven. The main party's ta arrive at eight thirty. I figure nine, we'll begin our party so they are in an settled. What's yer escape plan?"
"Back out the way I came in, and jumped a few roofs ta git clear."
"I was planning on usin the police car I drove in wit. Bust out the back, wipe the guards out, hop in an go. Care ta join me?"
"How'd ya git a car here?"
"Borrowed it. Long as no one outside's alerted, we just drive away."
Kanae giggled. "Only you, Mom."
"Better git some sleep, we're gonna be real busy in the mornin."
"Aye." Kanae wasn't sure she could sleep, knowing what was coming, but with her mother here, she felt a little better about the odds they were facing.
.
Kanae felt her shoulder shaken. She opened her eyes and saw light. Quickly sitting up, she found the flashlight that was pointed at the ceiling.
"Rise an shine," Kaede told her and handed her cold burger and a drink.
Kanae wiped the sleep out of her eyes. "Burgers?"
"Lest ya wanted yer uncle Richie's cold pizza."
"Please no," Kanae said with a grin.
"Eat up, we got fifteen minutes before the fun begins."
They ate, then Kaede cracked the access door open in the AC unit room. A finger to her lips to motion silence, and they crept out listen at the door to the room. At first, there was nothing, then they heard guards talking, verifying all the cameras worked.
The guards talked about people coming in. Kaede showed Kanae her watch. It was eight thirty five.
Guard checks came in, a call was made to handle some protesters in the parking lot. Five minutes till nine, a guard reported everyone was inside and the building was secure. Kaede and Kanae smiled at each other on hearing that.
Kaede gripped the door handle and nodded. She shot out into the room, Kanae right behind her. Kaede chopped four heads off. Seeing no others, Kanae grabbed the camera cables coming down from the ceiling and chopped them in half.
"Look," Kaede said, pointing out the windows. "That's him, greeting people."
Kanae saw the bald man working along a greeting line.
"Kanae, go get the other two guards, then get down there and head for the back, killing fast as you can. I'll drop right down on that bastard to splatter him and work my way forward. Stay low, keep'em confused. Go!"
Kanae burst out the door. The guards turned as she slashed out and chopped their heads off. Their heads and bodies were still falling when her and her mother leaped out to fly down to the main floor below. Kanae slowed herself by planting her mind hands down hard on four heads, killing the men and driving the bodies to the floor. She quickly spun her invisible arms around her as she ran at people, blasting them apart. To the side, more blood quickly flew in the air as Kaede charged for the front.
Kanae chopped her way through bodies so fast a woman only had time to open her mouth to scream before her head flew off. A guard managed to pull his gun to let it fly away when his head came off. The whirlwinds of death ripped through the room. Only a reporter turned his camera in time to have it and his head blast apart.
A cry of, "What the.." was all another man got out before his brains blew across the room. Kanae got to the back to splatter the last guards. She stopped to look around her. Everyone was a bloody mess on the floor, except Kaede who was flying at her.
"Out, to the car!" Kaede called.
Kanae got outside to see another guard. She punched him hard with mind hands to collapse his chest and rip his head off. She and her mother then got in the police car. Kaede drove away at a normal speed.
"Now that's teamwork!" Kaede announced. "Hon, where you wanna be dropped off at for I dump this car?"
Kanae told her the hotel, then asked, "Does this mean we split the reward money?"
"Hell no! No one knows we were both there, do they?" Kaede asked. "Just tell'em job's done."
"OK, Mom."
.
Kaede let Kanae off close to the hotel. Walking in, Kanae found David's room and knocked on the door. He opened the door, smiled briefly, then said, "Get in here, you're covered in blood."
Kanae looked at herself. Oops, there was blood all over her in large splotches. "Darn, gotta use the shower."
"Wash yourself and you're clothes," David said pointing to the shower. "I take it job's done."
"Aye, done, anyone in that building ain't no longer alive. I was like a mutated lawnmower. None survived me blades," she said, then went in the bathroom to clean up.
Kanae got herself and her clothes clean. She put on the hotel bathrobe to bring her clothes out to hang them up to dry. David as watching the local news. He nodded to the TV. "So far, not a word's been said about anything happening. Not even a 911 call. You sure no one lived?"
"Nope, not unless they can live without heads. Or a couple who no longer have brains. You wanted everyone gone right? The meet'ers and the guards, and any friends they brought with them."
David laughed. "You just earned yourself a big pile of cash. You'll find 121,000 in your account on Monday." In a more serious tone, he added, "And you helped save democracy. If it was possible, you'd be getting a medal for this."
"Ehh, don't want one," Kanae said with a wince. "I'm already too high profile at school. Doin good is good enough fer me."
By the time her clothes were dry, a news flash came on about the 'horrendous slaughter' of everyone at that convention center. The news had no details, but showed a bunch of flashing lights, police cars and ambulances at the site. The police were giving out no details.
Kanae got back to the campus just before dark. She walked the last block so no one saw David drop her off. Hungry, she went to the cafeteria to eat and watch the news broadcast about the 'massive slaughter' at a convention center. The center was shown, but a previous picture. The names of all the attendees were still being withheld until the families could be informed. So far, the body count was 64 and more were being brought out. The police commissioner ensured the culprits would be found and prosecuted.
Yup, that was good PR.
"Kanae!" Randy said happily and sat down beside her. "When did you get back?"
"Not long ago. Haven't eaten all day, so I came ta git some food." Seeing he hadn't held her hand or anything yet, she said, "Put yer arm round me."
"Gladly!" he beamed.
She smiled, "That's better. Ya check on Mrs. Perkins?"
"I did. She's doing better. I think her kidneys are working more too now. I think eventually, she's going to be OK."
"Good, I was hoping that would help."
Tracy came in and sat down with a tray. "I'm exhausted," she grumbled. "But! I did clean two frat houses, and made three hundred bucks."
"Good fer ya!" Kanae cheered. "Ya kin do it girl!"
"You ever goin join a fraternity?' Tracy asked. "I know there's a couple who have been wanting you to join."
"Naw," Kanae replied. "Sooner'er later though, I was thinking bout a house."
"You want to rent a house?" Randy asked.
"Nay rent. Buy," Kanae said and winked at him.
"Why buy a house?" he asked.
"Well, seeing we got at least five years of College left, more if we become doctors, my little dorm room is gonna git small. Sides, you'll come move in an help pay the bills, woan ya?"
Randy stared at her. "Move in, with you? Is this a trick question?"
Kanae giggled and shook her head. "I got a decent job now, and at the moment, all I'm doing is savin. Me schooling's paid fer, think ya kin git us a car?"
"You're serious," Tracy said. "How good is this job?"
"At the hospital, I'm an on call 'special' surgeon. Fixin people's good money."
"Yeah, OK you got that tumor out of that guys head." Tracy said.
"You're getting paid for working on Mrs. Perkins now?"
Kanae nodded. "Yup, and it ain't chump change."
"All right!" Randy beamed.
"Wow," Tracy said. "So you really can help me out. I will still have to pay you back."
"Aye, lass. But we kin work out how ya kin keep yer youngin an stay in college, even if yer parent's woan support ya. Speakin'o that, ya talk ta Bill bout it?"
"I did. He's willing to support me. He's going to bring some money for me and he's looking at renting a house here for us."
"Good." Kanae then had a thought. "Say, if he's gonna come here, Maybe we can share a house? It'll only haveta be a couple bedrooms. It'll be cheaper fer all of us."
"I'll ask. With a baby, this won't be a sorority house," Tracy said.
"Nay, we got studying an werk ta do. It's gonna be pretty domestic." Kanae agreed.
"When should we start looking?" Randy wondered aloud.
"Right away. See what's out there fer sale. Hopefully, some places will come up on Summer vacation when others graduate," Kanae replied.
"Come help me pack my things during Spring vacation?" Randy asked.
"If we git one that fast. If not I'll still visit. Yer coming home wit me this summer, right?"
.
Another summer trip was being planned to Glen Finnen. Nancy now knew Duncan McLeod, Glen Finnen and this fairytale world was real. She wanted desperately to go see it. She became a trip planner and hung up posters for it, and even made a signup sheet at the pool front desk for those who wanted to come. She even called and got a tour bus from Inverness to Glen Finnen scheduled. She was working hard calculating the cost per person. The more people coming, the better. Many were taking her up on it. Students and some of the faculty. She even got a hotel right there in Glen Finnen for everyone to stay at. Coordinating this, she found about the Highland games and adjusted the dates so her group could attend.
.
Tuesday, Kanae remembered to check her bank balance. She was pleasantly surprised. $331,962.91 Wow, it paid to work! Being in a college area, properties weren't cheap unless they were run down. In scanning the real estate adds, she noted most fell into the $150,000 to $250,000 range. There was only about a dozen houses in the area for sale though and many not close to the college.
A week after her and Randy decided to look for a house, they spent a Saturday at the hospital to check on Mrs. Perkins before they met the real Estate agent.
Mrs. Perkins was doing OK, not the best but much better than before. She was scheduled for pollop surgery, where most of the cancer was. Dr. Latimar was also a little more agreeable but didn't want to do any surgery until they could get it all. He showed Kanae on the latest X-rays where the long pollops were. It would be a bit nasty, but it looked like she could get all the targets that were infected. She decided to come back Sunday to get them out. Dr. Latimar wanted to do X-rays Monday morning to see what was left.
.
The woman who was the real estate Kanae contacted was a bouncy middle aged woman who bore a constant smile. Kanae and Randy got showed three houses. The first one was a bit small, had no yard and only driveways to each side. It was also $180,000. Too much for what they were getting. The second one was a little better, but over 300 grand. Too much. The last one was a small three bedroom place with a front porch, a garage and some yard to it. It seriously needed painting on the inside, and had no furniture, but was not as much at $165,000. It also had a full sized, though rough stone walled basement. This one was a possible, it was only a mile and a half from the college and the hospital wasn't that far away either. Beside, Kanae thought it was cute.
Leaving that house, the agent said, "I think this place is adorable! Yes, it needs a little work, but it's also a little less expensive. It's perfect for you two! I have all the information here, including all the yearly taxes."
"Thank you," Kanae told her. "We'll consider it."
"Just consider too that places like this usually go fast," the agent reminded them.
It had been for sale for over a year. Kanae didn't think it was going 'that fast.' "We'll consider it. We still have a few more places to check out."
"If I may ask, do you have a loan company you were looking at?" the agent asked sweetly.
Kanae shook her head. "If we decide ta get it, I'll pay ya by check or bank transfer. There woan be a loan."
"But getting a loan, you can save your money for other things."
"Nay, lass. With every loan, there's interest. That's paying interest out steada getting interest in. Me Dad taught me well how ta buy with what ya got."
The woman eyed her. "You really are frugal Scot."
"Aye lass."
The next day, Kanae concentrated on getting Mrs. Perkins' pollops out. They were thin, little left connected to her large intestines, so they weren't that bad getting out and sealing them up. After getting out all of them, Mrs. Perkins had to go to the bathroom bad. Kanae was glad not to have to see those things exit her.
Sunday night, the 'massive massacre' at the convention center was still being talked about on the news. 'Rumors' had it that the police had no clue who did it or even how it had been done, since they found many guards had guns that were never even fired in defense. It was suspected that there had been many attackers who were coordinated. The big question was, who was behind it.
Kanae showed Tracy the house they were thinking about. Tracy told Kanae that Bill was excited, and if there was work to do on the house, he was more than willing to do it. He even wanted the paint colors so he could start getting wall paint for the place. Kanae was happy he was willing to help, but they still had to pick their place.
With being very busy with school work and other work, weeks flew by. Mrs. Perkins finally got her surgery to remove the last of the cancer and medicine to help keep it from coming back. The day she was released, she insisted Kanae be there, and gave Kanae a big hug of thanks. Kanae and Randy also decided on the three bedroom house and bought it. Getting back to the dorms, Kanae let Tracy know they had their house. Kanae also had a key for the house made for Tracy, since soon, her and Randy were headed for Greene to see his parents. Knowing they would be bringing things back, Kanae got Randy a pickup truck so they could haul his things back. As well as get things they needed once they got back.
In his new Toyota pickup with a 'camper' bed cover, Randy was high in his glory driving Kanae home. It was an all day drive, but he did it with a big smile on his face, driving his own truck.
