CH 9
Most college kids headed for beaches and fun. That night Randy pulled his new truck into his driveway. They also brought pictures of their new house.
Opening the door, Randy called, "Mom, Dad, we're home!" He ushered Kanae in first with her bag. Tom was heading that way. Upon seeing Kanae he stopped short and said, "Whoa." Pointing he asked, "Randy this is your girl?"
Randy replied, "Yes, this is Kanae. Kanae, Tom, Kat's boyfriend.
His mother came quickly out of the kitchen. She stared at Kanae too. His father also took a long look at Kanae.
"She the witch?" his mother asked.
Kanae grinned. "Greetings," she said with a bow. "No witchery lest someone gets violent. Please to meet you all."
Kat came downstairs and stopped short. "Fuck me! It's Kaede Kikumura!" she cried.
Kanae laughed, "Nay lass, I'm Kanae. Kaede's me mom."
"Damn you look just like her."
"Well, duh," Kanae said with a giggle.
Randy's Father laughed. "So son, how'd you get home?" he asked.
Randy jerked a thumb behind him. "Our new truck! Come look."
The men went out to see Randy's truck. His mother asked, "Why a new truck?"
"To take Randy's things to our new house," Kanae replied. "We're gonna need ta git ta school an back an git things fer the house too."
"Can you afford the house payments?" his mother asked.
"Nay payments. It's all paid fer."
"You really are rich," Kat said, gaping at Kanae.
Kanae shrugged. "Nay, just been workin hard. Got a job at the hospital. Got a few days off ta come see ya. Til now, we've been livin in the dorms, savin money." she explained.
"That must be some job," Kat said vacantly.
"Aye, the better job ya git, the more it's worth. Kin I see yer wee one?"
"What?"
"Yer baby, lass. Kin I see'im?"
"Oh, yeah, come on up. I'll show you to Randy's room too." Kat said, looking confused.
Going into Kat's room and ignoring the clutter, Kanae focused on her baby boy. "Oh, ain't he a little darlin."
"I think he is," Kat said. "Mom wasn't happy about it, but hey. He's my child and I love him."
"As ya should Lass," Kanae assured her. "Ain't nothing more special."
"I saw that video you sent to Randy," Kat said. "How do your family float around on the air like that? And what's with the horns?"
Kanae grinned. "We're elves, Kat," she said and took her hat off. "Very close ta human, but not quite."
"So I that why you talk funny too?"
Kanae giggled. "Nay lass, that's from growin up in Scotland. I kin also speak French and a bit'o Spanish. Only me mom, Dad an me grandparents kin speak Japanese. I learned a bit, but it wasn't nay important."
"You know a lot." Kat said vacantly.
"Aye, because I studied a lot. The more ya know, the better off ya'll be. Learned one thing right away, Lass. Doan go trustin others ta take care'a ya, or yers. If ya fall down then, yer'll fall hard. It's best ta take care'o yerself an yers."
"Yeah, I'm getting that." Kat said softer.
"Good fer ya! I'm gonna go put me things away."
.
"So Kanae bought you a new truck, AND a house?" his father asked as he eyed Randy.
"She did, Dad. We're going to be in College for a total of at least six years. She said, and I agree, it's the best thing for us. Kanae's real smart, Dad. She thinks ahead. The house we got does need some work, but if we work on it as we're living there, in the future we can sell it for more than we got it for. Property there has a fairly high turnover rate due to it being a college town."
"Dude, so what is she?" Tom asked. "I never seen anyone with pink hair and red eyes before. Your mom thinks she's a witch."
Randy chuckled. "No, Kanae isn't a witch. She is real smart and she works hard. She's got that coloring because she's an albino, very little pigmentation in her skin. Kanae's a whole bunch of fun to be with as well."
His Father waggled a finger at him. "You better hold onto her."
Randy grinned. "Plan on it."
"So, like her family has a big house?" Tom asked.
"Yeah. Our house could easily fit in the courtyard of their place," Randy told him. "It's been standing since the 1500's."
"You talking like it's a damn castle," his Father stated.
"It is," Randy said. "I got the video of Kanae and her family putting up a huge tree in their foyer. It was like a 12 footer. Her Grandmother stood up on a beam I'm thinking two stories up, looking down on it. She was teasing Kanae some too," he said with a grin. "This summer, Kanae's taking me to Scotland to go see it and the town she lives in."
"Get pictures!" Tom said quickly.
"He better," his Father agreed. "And at least get her an engagement ring."
"Yeah, get on your knees and everything!" Tom beamed.
"Dad, we haven't decided anything like that yet," Randy reminded him.
"Just keep going like you're going," his Father said with a wink.
.
Inside, since Randy's mother was starting things for dinner, Kanae said, "I kin help, Mrs…" It was then she realized she didn't know Randy's last name.
"Angela Turner," Angela said with a smirk. "My husband's Peter, or just Pete."
"Aye, Mrs. Turner. Somehow Randy never told he his last name," Kanae said meekly.
"Your minds were probably on other things," Angela said with a smirk. She pulled a covered bowl out of the refrigerator and asked, "Ever have Speedies?"
"Nay, never heard'o'em."
"It's a local favorite. Chunked up chicken or pork and marinated for four days so the marinate seeps in good. Summer time we barbecue them. Pan fried, they are pretty tasty too. In a couple places in the summer, we even have Speedie Fest celebrations. Those are events, People come with their own marinate mixes to see who made the best, games are played, there's balloon rides and music. It's a fun time."
"Aye, kinda like our Highland games," Kanae agreed. "Lots'a stuff goes on there."
"It's most likely close," Angela agreed. "If you want to do something, you can set the table."
Kanae nodded. "Kin do. Least gettin dinner'ere's easier than at home. You got a stove and everything."
Angela frowned. "No stove, how do you cook things?"
"Wit the swingarm o're the fireplace. Either the pot, the deep pan, or the griddle hooks onta the swing arm and ya put it o're the fire. Gotta watch the fire close too fer the proper height. The pot ain't so bad, wat'er boilin's a little more fergivin that a piece of meat or haggis."
Angela and Kanae talked as they made dinner. Angela also realized this was an old castle they lived in. When they wanted a garage in the courtyard, they cut stone and lumber and made one, the same with their driveway. They wanted furniture, they made it. Kanae had indeed grown up learning how to work for anything she wanted.
Angela also noted Kanae fawning over the smell of the cooking speedies as she helped where Angela let her.
Sitting down for dinner, Kanae sat between Randy and Kat. She also put a bottle of 14 year old Glen Finnen on the table as her contribution.
"I really can't, I breast feed," Kat told her.
"Ain't got a breast pump an bottles?" Kanae asked.
"No I just breast feed. It's what's best for the baby."
"Aye, i'tis. Still, Lass, ya gotta have the pump and bottles fer when ya can't be there," Kanae stated. "We'll go git'em after dinner." She nudged Randy, "Ye'll take us woan ya?"
Randy grinned. "Aye Lass, I will."
Kanae grinned back. "I'll make a Scot outta ya yet."
Randy's Father thought that was funny.
Randy did show Kanae how to load speedies on a slice of Italian bread in a line and add just a bit of juice on it. Kanae loved it, she wanted to take some marinate home with her.
After dinner when Randy took Kanae and Kat to the store is when the Scotch got drank. Pete and Tom sat down to sip, and began sipping more.
By the time Randy brought the girls back, Kat with her new breast pump and bottles, and Kanae with a couple bottles of Speedie marinate, they were feeling pretty good.
In the kitchen Kanae showed Kat how to use the breast pump and fill the bottles. Kanae also showed her how to squirt a bit'o milk on her wrist to be sure the milk was 'skin warm' before feeding.
"Now, lass ya kin have good milk fer yer youngin and still partake some," she said with a wink.
Randy got on the web and got Kanae a recipe for speedie sauce and printed it out. Sitting down on the couch by Randy, Kanae got herself a half glass of Scotch. She sniffed it then took a sip. "Ahh, Ain't nothing better."
"This is good stuff," Pete agreed. "You can drink it straight?"
"Aye, lad." Kanae said, then raised a finger and added, "BUT! If yer tipsy, careful on the stone steps down ta the whiskey cellar if ya wanna git more. A tumble down those kin really hurt!"
They all laughed at that.
"I really wish I could think of a good, original song," Tom lamented. "Seems like every one's been done already."
"How bout one from home I doubt no one around here's heard?" Kanae asked.
"Yeah, you got one?" he asked eagerly.
"Couple," Kanae then grinned and said, "Now member, this is Scot'ish."
"Lemme hear it," Tom asked.
Kanae sang.
Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low
Through the streets in me kilt I'll go
All the Lassies say 'Hello!
Donald where yer trousers!'
Wearin me kilt is my delight
I'm not wrong I know I'm right.
The Highlanders would git a fright
If they saw me in trousers.
Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low
Through the streets in me kilt I'll go
All the Lassies say 'Hello!
Donald where yer trousers!'
I went ta a fancy ball
And it was slippery in the hall
I was afreared ta slip in fall
For I had nay tousers
Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low
Through the streets in me kilt I'll go
All the Lassies say 'Hello!
Donald where yer trousers!'
When the air gits a cool breeze
I got me knee socks fer me knees
Ot'her wise they might freeze
For I nave nay trousers
Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low
Through the streets in me kilt I'll go
All the Lassies say 'Hello!
Donald where yer trousers!'
Tom sang the last chorus with her, grinned. "That was great! Got any more?" he asked eagerly.
Kanae took on an impish look. "Got another favorite, though Mom an Dad didn't like me singing it. tis a Sea Shanty I learned from Captain Ron."
"Why?" Kat asked. "Wasn't bad, was it?"
"Nay bad, it told a story but a trip on a sailin ship from England ta America. I thought it was good, but a couple words me parents doan care fer. I learned it as a wee lass."
"Well?" Pete asked.
"I want to hear this one too," Randy added.
Kanae sang again
Now all ya lads'o Liverpool I'll have ya all beware
When ya sail those packet ships no Dungaree jackets wear
But have a monkey jacket already in yer hand
Fer there blow some cold Nor'westers
On the banks of Newfoundland
We'll washer an we'll scrub'er down with holy stone an sand
There blow some cold nor'westers
On the banks of Newfoulndland
We had Jack lynch from Ballnachitch,
Mike Murphy and some more
And I'll tell ya true, they suffered like hell
On the way ta Baltimore
They pawned their gear in Liverpool and
Sailed as they did stand
an there blow some cold nor'westers
On the banks of Newfoulndland
We'll washer an we'll scrub'er down with holy stone an sand
There blow some cold nor'westers
On the banks of Newfoulndland
The first mate stood on the foc'sle head
And loudly he did roar
Come rattle'er in me lucky lads
We're bound fer America's shore
So wipe the mud off the dead'mans face
And haul or ya'll be damned
Fer there blow some cold nor'westers on the banks of Newfoundland
We'll washer an we'll scrub'er down with holy stone an sand
An we'll bid adue to the virgin rock
on the banks of Newfoulndland
An now we're off the hook me boys
The land is white with snow
An soon we'll see the pay table
An spend the night below
An on the docks, comin in flocks
Those pretty girls will say,
'it's snugger with me than out to sea'
On the Banks of Newfoundland
We'll wash'er an we'll scrub'er down with holy stone an sand
There blow some cold nor'westers
On the banks of Newfoulndland
Randy eyed her. "It sounds like those guys had it rough back in the days."
"Aye, even the storm we ran through on the Sea Witch was nay pleasant," Kanae agreed. "In me hammock I could see the wave tops though the porthole was taller than the boat. They crashed hard against us too, rollin the boat one way then the'tother. Water crashin down an pushin us over. Only thing worse than that was when Mom jumped a Tsumami. Woke up wit me face pasted ta the ceilin, then was weightless fer a bit, then slammed back into me hammock. There was stuff all over the place in the cabin after that."
"You jumped a Tsunami?" Angela asked, wide eye.
"Aye, Mom saw it coming an meetin it head on was the safest way. We hit a wall'o water an got thrown in the air. Dad said, 'Let's nay do that again."
"No shit!" Tom cried. "That had to be frightening."
"Narly knocked cold," Kanae said. "I was dead asleep when me hammock kinda sling shot'ed me up inta the celin. Narly broke me nose."
"How big is this boat?" Kat asked.
Kanae shrugged. "Nay real big. Fifty foot sail boat. Mains'le and fore'sl, six bunks, six more hammocks, kitchen, eatin table, storage. Pretty much everythin we need out on the ocean."
"A yacht." Pete stated.
"Aye, mom keeps it ported in BrightSea. We've gone all kinds'a places in it. Usually, every summer we take a trip someplace. Speakin'o that." Looking at Randy, she said, "We gotta git ya a pair'a boat shoes."
"I'm thinking a rope to hang onto?" he asked.
Pete burst out laughing.
"Maybe a helmet and a life jacket as well?" Angela asked.
"Hey, Kanae, could you write those songs down for me?" Tom asked.
"Aye, Lad!"
Randy and Kanae had a good time, writing down those songs for Tom, and had him practice them a few times. Surprisingly, Kat only had some watered down scotch and didn't get as toasty as they did. Tom, although a bit tipsy, did work on those songs and got them down. At least he was serious about getting into music. Kat drifted off to bed, followed by her parents. They stayed up later (since they didn't have to get up in the morning) and called it quits around two AM when they found the bottle was empty.
Snuggling into bed in a spoon, Randy kissed Kanae and said, "Thanks. This is the best time I've had with my folks in a long time."
Kanae turned over, "I'll do what I kin fer ya, love. Always will."
"Me too." They kissed again and started to make out, but passed out in the process to fall asleep hugging each other.
.
In the morning, Randy had thought getting toasted the night before, he'd have a hangover . He didn't. He felt a little sleepy still, but otherwise OK. The reason they got up was a knock at the door. Kat called in, "Kaede! There's a couple government people down here to see you. They got badges."
"Nooo," Kanae groaned. Sitting up she yelled, "Tell'em I'm comin!"
"Government people? Any idea what they want?" Randy asked.
"Nay, but it doan sound good," Kanae grumbled. She got dressed and stumbled downstairs to see what was up.
A man and a woman, sharply dressed in their black government uniforms waited in the living room. The dark haired man and the blonde woman also had their sunglasses on. Pete was there with them.
Coming down the stairs, Kanae said, "This bet'er be important."
"Kanae Kikumura?" the man asked.
"Aye. Whaddya want?" Kanae asked as she rubbed the sleep off her face.
"You need to come with us," the man stated firmly.
Kanae eyed him. "Why?"
"It's best if you just come," the woman stated.
Kanae eyed her. Firmly she said, "Ya kin tell me why, or I ain't goin."
The man motioned towards the door. "You are required to come with us."
Kanae stopped and cast him a scowl. "Why's that? Ya tell me why, or ya kin leave."
The man took a step towards her to grab her arm. "No!" the woman barked and held him back. "Don't touch her!"
"Ya better listen lad," Kanae warned.
"We can tell you outside," the woman said. "Please, it's important."
Kanae nodded. "It better be. Who are ya?"
The woman pulled her badge. Seeing this the man did too. "Agent Bennet and Agent Porter, Homeland Security," the woman said. "We need to talk to you."
"Aye." Kanae said and motioned them outside.
Pete and Randy stared as the three went out. Pete looked at Randy. "What does Homeland Security want with Kanae?"
Randy shook his head. "No clue."
Outside, The blonde said, "We talked to Agent Gilbert, He said you can help us with this guy, Robert Shaffer." she said and handed Kanae a picture.
Kanae took it. "I take it he's local? What's he wanted fer?"
"We found he's in town, and we can't let this chance go. He's into the cartels, smuggling drugs, guns, prostitutes, contracts for hits, you name it. He's visiting his parents. Keeps his personal guards with him. We can show you the house."
Kanae sighed. This wasn't what she'd planned on for her vacation. "Hokay, yer back window's work on yer car?"
The blonde grinned. "Another drive by beheading?"
Kanae snorted. "Hope it's that easy. Let's get this done."
"It's just a few blocks up. Brown two-story mid street on the right," the Blonde said.
"Show it ta me soon as ya see it." Kanae said as she leaned up between the seats. "How many cars they got?"
"Three, one in the driveway, the two on the street are Shaffer's and his body guards." The man said.
It was mid morning, She hoped they were there. "So is this arrest or wipe out?" Kanae asked.
"It's best if we don't have to take them to court, This guy is very slippery and has contacts and makes large payoffs." The Blonde said.
Watching ahead, the man turned down a street. She saw a couple cars with men looking like they were about to get in. "Those them?" she asked.
"They are."
"Doan stop," Kanae told them. She got the window down and timed her jump. Shooting out the window, she ran beside the cars and bounced up over the men's cars. By the time they saw her, she was ripping heads off. She got eight men, then jumped back in the window. "Done!" She announced.
"Fuck!" the man said, looking in the rear view mirror.
"No need ta take'em ta court," Kanae assured them.
The blonde turned to stare at her. "But, we just drove past."
"Aye, a drive by beheadin." Kanae agreed.
"Damn," the woman muttered. "We'll take you home now."
When Kanae got back in the house, Pete and Randy watched her come in.
"What was that about? You just left." Randy asked.
"Bad guys lost their heads." Kanae said simply. "Anyone hungry?"
It was after Kanae made herself and Randy breakfast that police sirens were heard. Pete, Angela, Tom and Kat went out to see what the commotions was about, as did neighbors. Randy and Kanae decided it was time to go upstairs and finish what the started last night.
The news was ablaze with the 'mysterious' deaths in the small town. State Police were called in, news vans arrived and the block was closed off to traffic. Later on the news, police were not commenting on the deaths, other that saying eight men had been killed and the only one who saw anything was the Father who went outside to see the bodies and severed heads lying on the ground. Police were searching the streets for anyone who had information on what happened.
The news equated this to a smaller version of what happened at that convention center. It was suspected that at least two perps were involved, possible four, but no one had actually seen what happened. Again, the dead men had guns that were never pulled like at that convention center.
"Wow, Man maybe it was like a ghost!" Tom said firmly.
"Ghosts aren't real." Pete said. He looked at Kanae. "But someone did it."
Kanae shrugged. "Coulda been a drive by."
"But they weren't shot. They had their heads cut off," Kat said.
"Maybe a real long sword was used?" Kanae guessed.
"That was right about the time those government people came to get you," Kat said, eyeing her.
"Coincidence," Kanae said with a shrug.
"What did those people want you for?" Pete asked.
"They wanted to verify me status," Kanae replied.
"They looked pretty serious for just wanting to verify your status," Kat stated.
"Aye, they were used ta playin bad cop, worse cop. Blondie understood that was a bad idea wit me." Kanae explained.
"Why's that?"
Kanae grinned. "I kin giv'em a much worse day than the kin give me."
Randy chuckled. "Like those three girls with clubs who wanted to beat on you?" To his parents who eye him, he said, "Kanae just stood there and those three beat on each other until they knocked each other cold." He chuckled, "They thought they were tough and could strong arm anyone. They all ended up in the hospital."
Kanae shrugged. "They wanted violence, so they got it."
"Damn," Tom breathed as he stared at her.
To get the talk on to something else, Kanae asked, "Tom, what instruments ya plan on using fer yer songs?"
"Guitar, drums, keyboard maybe?" Tom said in a musing tone.
Holding up a finger, Kanae said, "Lemme suggest somethin. These are old songs from the old world. How bout old style instruments. Say, a keyboard set on harpsicord, and say … a set'o bagpipes? Maybe a squeeze box? Make it sound like they're old."
Tom thought for a moment then said, "Yeah, OK. Make it different than anything else out there. That will make them unique!"
"Aye, an sing like a Scot, not like those wailin rockers," Kanae coaxed.
"Yeah! And I don't know about wearing a skirt though," Tom said with a frown.
"A kilt, Lad, and go all the way wit a Highland uniform wit the cap, knee socks, belt pouch an sash. Yer band mates too. I've thinking clan McLeod'er Clan Campbell tartans."
"You can get those?" Tom asked, surprised.
"Aye, look it up on the web."
"People might come to see you just because it's unique," Pete said.
"And get band members that aren't high all the time," Randy added.
"Yeah, Ok," Tom said thoughtfully. "It's worth a shot."
Kat nudged Kanae. "Thank you," she whispered.
Kanae winked. "Family should help each other."
.
Kanae had a good time at Randy's house. One thing Tom and Kat were lacking was money. Kat agreed to stay in school and Tom couldn't find a job that paid anything. Quitting school wasn't doing him any favors. He 'hated' to go back. Kanae got another $7,000 for getting rid of those men, she got Pete and Tom to the side and gave Pete $3000 to get to started. And stressed, "Only fer things fer his band!"
Pete agreed to use the money only for band items to get Tom started.
