"He was like a man who has got used to drinking the finest wine, and now finds that everyday wine tastes like vinegar." Pillars of Earth Ken Follett
Lena was on her third pint of the night. It was games night at Kara's, and to be quite honest, she had no intention of going home at the end. Instead, she felt it was time to get down to her roots, feeling like she was a kid again, trying to get a swig of beer at the pub whilst her máthair was distracted by the dancing. Alex had offered her a weaker beer, but Lena refused, muttering something in Irish under her breath.
Kara pulled out monopoly, "Lena's my partner, business mind, and I don't have to move; to move the pieces on the board, she can just magic them." Kelly passed a considered look towards the both of them, wondering if it was an excellent idea for Laoina to be doing magic at this point in time, given how much the witch had had to drink. "Beidh sé ceart go leor, cad a d'fhéadfadh dul mícheart. It's not like I'm going to set fire to anything." Lena did regret to mention the last time she freaked out; it ended in her candle exploding, catching the curtains alight and the windows shattering into tiny sharp shards of glass. But that was only the once, ok twice, maybe slightly more.
The game began to get heated; Kara and Lena's character, the dragon, was currently flying above people's heads, judging their next move, before sweeping down to knock over their houses and hotels. "Hey, that's unfair! Magic counts as cheating! Get your little dragon back down to earth, Miss Luthor!" The sound of Alex being a sore loser. As the Kryptonian had named the dragon, Berty came down and landed upon Alex's hair, burying himself, curling into a ball like an overtired puppy. "That thing better not set my hair on fire." She cautiously rolled the dice, keeping her eyes locked on the witch for any movement or mumblings.
Lena raised her hands to surrender, "Tá sé cosúil nach… bhfuil muinín agat… asam." Her voice started to slur as she lent on Kara's shoulder, "In ainm Brigid… beidh tine." As soon as the last words came out of her mouth, she realised what was about to happen. Kelly was right magic should not be done under the influence; it leads to stupid mistakes. Like commanding fire instead of forbidding it.
The little dragon rose from Alex's head and started to follow Lena's eye line towards the curtains. She knew what was about to happen; Lena nudged Kara, whispering in her ear. Everyone's attention became transfixed on the small metal creature as it drew in a breath. The room increased in heat as the flame started to climb the fabric, Lena's dragoon returning to her shoulder, looking proud of his work. She scratched him gently on the chin before feeling the Kryptonia's icy breath meeting the atmosphere. Soon smoke was surrounding them; thankfully, the witch still had the sense to open the window and turn on the kitchen extractor fan before the smoke alarm blasted its wonderful tune.
"And on that note, Alex, I think we should get going and let Lena go to bed before the rest of the apartment is in flames." Both Alex and Kelly left, leaving the two women alone. Kara guided Lena to the bed, pulling off her shoes and tucking her in. A soft hum came in reply as they both drifted off to sleep, and the monopoly dragon curled up on Lena's discarded jumper on the floor.
So, there you go. Anyway this was going to be longer but it's like 01:00. But tiny dragons are cute right? And who hasn't accidentally set fire to curtains before.
