Echo Eternity

March 21, 1995

Annika watched the young woman muster all her strength to push her baby out of her body. The young man at her side was holding her hand, as if it relieved some of the pain she was going through - maybe mentally.

Finally, the child was born.

The doctor and nurses were quickly doing their jobs to look after the newborn- getting her wrapped in a towel so Mom could hold her for the first time. "A girl," the dad spoke happily.

Before the mom could say anything, Annika went to work. She was seconds away from putting her palm over the baby's head when someone called out her name.

"Annika, stop."

The Reaper froze, barely turning to see who it was. She noticed time was now stopped; the baby wasn't crying, the mom didn't talk. Nobody moved.

"Who are-?" Annika began to ask, but as the stranger walked into the delivery room, she felt his holy power. Wasn't that-? She forced her whole body to turn right as she stepped back from the bed to face the Archangel before her.

"Michael," she recognized. It's not like the Reapers knew everything about what the angels did, but Annika knew that Michael almost never came to Earth. Him being here must be important.

The Archangel was holding something in his hands, it appeared to be a wad of red light and white... smoke? Annika could strangely sense both angelic and demonic power emanating from it.

Some kind of hybrid?

"Annika," Michael began. "When you reap that child's soul, I'm going to place her," he motioned to what he contained in his hands. "Into that body before the vessel dies."

Annika was extremely confused. "What? An angel cannot enter a vessel without consent. This is a human baby-"

Michael smiled as he held out the hybrid in his arms. "She's half demon. This will work."

"Why are you doing this?" Annika wondered, proceeding with touching the baby's head, moments later holding the newborn's spiritual self in her arms, wailing.

Michael answered with a chuckle, "Between you and me, I can't have her interfering with mine and her father's destined fight in the future."

May 16, 2003

A gentle shake stirs my eight year old consciousness awake. "Good morning, angel bug," follows into my ears next, just like every morning.

I open my green eyes to greet his own bright orange-colored ones. "Good morning, Tei." I rubbed my eyes and face next, followed by a humanly yawn; I'd actually slept a few hours tonight.

"Are you excited for today?" Tei asked me, stepping back to give me room to climb off my bed. I yank the collar of my blue Scooby-Doo pajama shirt, darn thing itches all the time, but this was one of my favorite sleep shirts.

"What's today?" I asked back, stretching.

Tei shook his head. "Your memory is worse than my mother's was sometimes, angel bug. Today is the day you get to meet your pen pal from school."

I nearly screamed in response. "HOLY CRAP!" I double checked that my mom laid out my outfit by my closet like she always does the night before, before I dashed out of my bedroom to get ready for school.

My class was doing pen pals with a school that was just over an hour from my own school. My pen pal was a girl named Megan and I was very, very excited to meet her. She was born the same year as me, but I am five months older than her. At least, that's what she'd wrote me when I asked her how old she was and when was her birthday.

First I enter my sister's room, who's the youngest. "Nat," I said a little loudly. "Nat, it's time to get up."

The five, almost six year old grumbles in response. "Don't make me do it," I warned her. She gave me more sleepy mumbles. "Okay that's it." I remained still and narrowed my eyes, holding my hand out and swatting it.

Natalie's blanket flies off on it's own. "Lynn!" She yelped. "I hate when you do that!"

"Well I hate that you don't get up when I tell you!" I scolded her, turning and leaving her room, getting ready to repeat the process all over again with our brother, JD. He's the middle child at seven years old, as of nine days ago.

After I finish in the bathroom, I'm back in my bedroom. Tei is gone, giving me the privacy to change into my outfit for the day. Tei is my BEST friend even though he's tall like my dad. His skin is very tan compared to my own, and I'm pretty pale. His eyes are so orange they look like fire. His hair is halfway between short and long, and it's the color of night; he's got dark facial hair that's messy like Dad's is when he doesn't shave for a while. For the longest time, I thought I made him up like some imaginary friend, but he never went away as time went on, and then he showed me that he is... like me.

Nat, JD, our parents, or anyone else can't see Tei. Only me. He says he's hiding from my family. "They're not like us. They won't understand us either, angel bug. They're not ready yet." He'd explained it to me.

It didn't bother me one bit. It just meant Tei would keep being MY best friend only - he wouldn't be Nat's or JD's best friend. I grin to myself as I sit down at my vanity. In an instant Tei appears back in my room, and he tilted his head. "What are you smiling about, angel bug?"

I shook my head. "Can you do my hair?" I asked him. "I want you to do it today."

"Of course." Tei nodded as I handed him my yellow hair brush. He began to run it through my bed-head dark brown hair. Tei only knows how to do one style - a long, big braid. As he began, I decided to ask him:

"Tei? Did your mom teach you how to braid?"

"Yes she did," he answered. "Just so I could do it for her almost every day, it felt like." He recalled. He finished my braid just as Natalie screamed from downstairs that Mom had made breakfast. "Make sure you get some eggs this time." Tei urged me.

"No way." I stuck my tongue out at him before I left my vanity to get some breakfast before Mom would take us to school. I'm one of the first to wake up, but usually one of the last ones to make it into the kitchen. Dad was already gone it seems. Mom prepared our plates as she asked me if I was going to have the usual. I nodded, watching her hand me nothing but a clump of bacon on my plate.

We eat and then we get on our way to school. Mom always takes us in her little red four-door car. She dropped us off and I ran as fast as I could to my classroom, I was eager for the field trip.

I joined my other best friend in the classroom, watching my teacher begin preparations for us to head out. "Hi Alice." I spoke first.

She nodded happily at me. "Hi Lynn, I can't wait to meet my pen pal."

"Me either." I agreed. Her real name is actually Adelina but she hates it, so she goes by her middle name. Alice is tanner than me because she's half Italian; she's got long, light brown hair and brown eyes I always say are too big for her head.

Soon our entire class is on the school bus. I briefly thought of JD and Nat, knowing they were jealous I got to go on a field trip today. Alice and I sit together, towards the back of the bus. She wants the aisle seat so she could talk to the boys she thought were cute in our class. I didn't mind the window seat.

The drive felt very long, but eventually we made it to the state park listed on the field trip form. I don't think I've been to this one before. It was big with millions of green trees and I saw a lot of squirrels. When our bus came to a stop, I noticed there was another school bus right of us, also parked. I widened my eyes and thought, is that the bus of our pen pals? Megan's bus? I'd soon find out.

I'm not known to be shy, so I was the first student off the bus. Everyone else was too nervous I guess. I'm too excited! After everyone's piled out, our teacher walks us over to a large pavilion, where the other class had been waiting for us. We had sticker name tags on our shirts, to help us find our pen pal. A lot of the kids began to interact, to find their pals and meet each other.

"Lynn?"

I blinked suddenly and turned to my right. A girl stood before me - name tag read Megan. I gasped immediately and started grinning. "Hi!"

"Hi!" She said back. "Nice to meet you!" She reminded me of a taller Nat. Her eyes were the same lighter blue, with nearly pale blonde hair. Megan had hers in two long braids. I flip my one long braid over to the front.

"I swear I didn't plan this." I laughed, and she laughed too. I looked back to see what any of the other kids were doing. Half of them went to the playground already. "Hey, will you go on the swings with me?" I asked Megan.

"Okay." She agreed. "Want to race?"

"Definitely." I knew I would win anyway. Tei says that because I'm... different, I can run faster than the normal people. I've never lost a race, even against grown ups.

But this time, for the first time, someone was keeping up with me - Megan. Wait... does this mean she's like me? Like Tei?

We make it to the playground at a near even draw. "Shake on it?" Megan offered.

"Shake," I agreed, taking her hand, and that's when I felt it. I sensed... something. I didn't understand it, but I recognized it. I feel it in myself, and every time I'm hugging Tei. I pulled my hand away out of slight fear. If I could sense her 'power' could she sense mine? I wish Tei was here.

"Are you okay?" She asked me. I studied her face. She tilted her head. "Lynn?"

I don't think she's aware, I realized. I gulped in relief and said, "Yeah, sorry. Let's swing!"

The rest of the day was an entire blast after I decided not to ask Megan about how she was possibly some kind of- I gulped. I thought it was just Tei and I. We were on the swings together for a while, talking about anything and everything. She cracked a lot of jokes.

When we ate our lunches, I was selfish and tried to isolate Megan from the other kids to keep her to myself, but she wanted me to meet some of her classmates, so we sat with some of them. I remember Alice shooting me a look of betrayal, but I knew she would get over it.

My mom packed me a ham and cheese sandwich, potato chips and a bottle of water. I went through it pretty quick, and it was back to play time for the rest of the field trip. Later came too soon, and it was nearing the time to head back to school.

"Even after the school year ends, who knows if we'll get to keep writing each other." Megan wondered sadly.

"I have an idea," I reached into my backpack for a notebook I brought from my classroom desk. I scrounge for a pen before I write as neatly as my little fingers can my first and last name, and my address. I rip the paper out and fold it, handing it to Megan. "Ask your parents if you can start writing me for real."

"I will. They'll probably say no, though." She said laughingly. She offered a goodbye hug and I took it. I hugged her tight, hoping maybe now she could sense our power, but she still didn't. Maybe she was just keeping it a secret from me too? I understand.

Alice was still a chatterbox on the ride back to school. I remained quiet, feeling sad that I was back with the normal kids again. I wonder if there's more like us out there?

My bus returns just as the school day has ended. I literally exit the bus then head over to my mom's red car in the pickup zone. As I get in, I see I've beaten my siblings to the car. "Hi sweetie," Mom greeted me. "How was your field trip? Was your pen pal nice?"

"Hi Mom, and yes," I replied, switching my bookbag to in front of me. "I had a lot of fun."

"Good to hear." She turned to smile at me. My mom is the most beautiful woman I know. Her hair is long and sunny blonde, that's like an almost white. Her eyes are a deep brown. Quickly she looked out the passenger window to watch her other two children run up to the car. Finally, home bound.

That spick of sadness stayed in me even after we were home and I went up to my room. I missed Megan already. "I hate this," I mumbled to myself, throwing my bookbag down angrily.

"You hate what, angel bug?" I heard Tei ask from the floor on the other side of my bed. I shake my head and turn my television on, to mask anything Tei says. "Come on, Lynn. You can show me if you don't want to tell me."

I sighed. "Okay." I join Tei on the floor, our backs against the bedside. He holds out his grown up hand, palm side up. I set my left hand, palm side down on his, and he gently squeezes. Then it begins.

Tei says there are things we can both do, but there are some things that us special people can do that is unique to ourselves. What that all consists of is something I don't understand, but what is happening now is something only Tei can do, a power he inherited from his mom. As long as he's holding my hand, or hugging me, he can show me his thoughts and memories, and he can read my thoughts and memories.

It's something out of a dream whenever he wants to read my memories. He closes his eyes and concentrates, and I enjoy the powerful energy he emits like Megan does. "I'm glad you enjoy it," Tei said aloud. I giggle and feel very embarrassed. "I see..." he spoke next. "You think Megan is like us?"

I nodded.

"I believe it may be so." Tei acknowledged, opening his hand to release mine.

I gasped. "Really? Are there more people like us out there?"

Tei rubbed his thumb gently on my cheek. "Possibly, angel bug. So, what's on the agenda today?"

"No homework today," I answered in relief. "I don't want to go back outside and play any more."

"Cartoons? Maybe Scooby's on." Tei suggested eagerly. I nodded, getting up to find my TV remote to get the cartoon channel on. I wonder if Megan likes Scooby-Doo too.
