Chapter 1

The helicopter finally landed. Exiting it was a teenage boy; he had yellow irises and his silver hair had black highlights. On his left wrist was a blue Duel Disk (A/N picture the Duel Disks from Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V). The entrance exams had been a little difficult, but he managed to get through them.

"This is sweet! We're finally at Duel Academy!" a voice said. The voice belonged to another teen, one with neon green hair and purple eyes. "Whoa! Look at you! And your eyes are yellow! That's crazy!"

"Well, I have them," the other boy replied.

"Nice to meet ya! My name's Connor. What's yours?"

"I'm Yukon."

"Wanna Duel?" Connor asked excitedly.

Yukon was taken aback, "What? We can't Duel now; we have to go see what dorms we're in."

"Outta my way, everybody," another voice rudely stated.

The two teens looked around and saw nothing.

"Down here."

They looked down to see a Komodo dragon with a small, black Duel Disk on its right foreleg.

Both boys were dumbfounded. "What the!? How are you talking?!" Connor asked/yelled.

"Speech therapy," the big monitor lizard answered, before proceeding to barge past them.

After another moment, the boys finally got over their shock and went to get their jackets.

Later at the dorm…

"Aw man, I'm in red? Well, at least this jacket looks good on me," Connor said.

Yukon was too excited to listen. He'd managed to get into Obelisk blue! Fortunately, when he got his jacket, the people there were willing to tailor it to make more like a regular jacket instead of one those long coats the other blues were wearing.

Connor was starting to look both eager and impatient "So, wanna have that Duel now?"

"Okay, let's do this." Yukon sighed, activating his Duel Disk's red blade.

"Alright!" Connor said; his Duel Disk had a purple body and a green blade.

"DUEL!" they both shouted.

Connor LP: 4000

Yukon LP: 4000

"Dibs on the first turn!" Connor picked a card from his hand. "I summon the Tuner monster, Infernity Avenger (Dark/Fiend/Tuner/Effect/ATK: 0/DEF: 0/LV: 1)!"

A small, goblin-cowboy creature wielding two pistols appeared on his field.

"Next, I play the Spell Card Double Summon. Now I can summon Infernity Necromancer (Dark/Fiend/Effect/ATK: 0/DEF: 2000/LV: 3)."

Entering the field next to Avenger was a skeletal witch doctor.

"I'd mention that Necromancer switches itself to Defense mode when it's summoned, but that's not important," the upbeat youth stated. "I activate the Spell, Tannhauser Gate. If my monsters are the same type and have no more than 1000 attack points, then both their Levels become their combined Levels, which is four."

Avenger LV: 1-4

Necromancer LV: 3-4

"Now I synchronize my two Level four monsters!" Avenger transformed into a quartet of green rings while Necromancer became a quartet of white stars. "Arise from the space between Heaven and Hell…which is basically Purgatory! Synchro Summon, Level 8! Void Ogre Dragon (Dark/Dragon/Synchro/Effect/ATK: 3000/DEF: 3000/LV: 8)!"

A dark miasma formed on his field, before condensing into the shape of a dragon. The dragon was black with big claws and orange-red 'orbs' all over its body. It took a crouching position on his field in Defense mode.

"I set one card and end my turn."

"What was that?" Yukon asked.

"What was what?"

"That little dramatic speech you gave while summoning your monster. What was that about?"

"Oh, nothing. I just think it sounds cool to say stuff like that when I summon my best monsters."

Yukon took the answer for what it was and looked over his opponent's field, 'His hand is empty, which means he can use his monster's effect. That could be a pain. But besides that-'

"Why'd you put that thing in Defense mode?" he asked.

Connor shrugged, "In case you make some epic counterattack next turn."

"Uh, okay, well, speaking of my turn, I draw!" Yukon looked at his hand. 'This'll work.'

"I summon Heroic Challenger-Thousand Blades (Earth/Warrior/Effect/ATK: 1300/DEF: 1100/LV: 4)!"

Bursting out of the ground was a monster resembling an armored knight, which, true to its name, had a thousand blades sticking out of its back.

"Thousand Blades' effect lets me discard a 'Heroic' monster to summon another 'Heroic' monster from my Deck. So, I'm summoning another Thousand Blades in Attack mode."

Just as he said, a monster identical to his first appeared. He continued, "When Thousand Blades-"

"How 'bout you just call it 'TB?'"

"What? Why?"

"Well, 'Thousand Blades' is a bit of a long name and this way it'll save text space on this chapter's page."

Yukon gave him a dull stare, "This chapter has plenty of room. As I was saying, when Thousand Blades uses its effect, it switches to Defense mode. Now, I'll use the effect of my second Thousand Blades. I discard another 'Heroic' monster to summon Heroic Challenger-Extra Sword (Earth/Warrior/Effect/ATK: 1000/DEF: 1000/LV: 4)!"

Another knight-like monster appeared on his field. This one had had green and silver armor and wielded two swords, one long and one short.

"Now, with these three monsters, I build the Overlay Network!" A spiral portal formed on the ground; his monsters turned into three brown-orange lights and flew into the portal. "Xyz Summon! Rank 4! Heroic Champion-Kusanagi (Earth/Warrior/Xyz/Effect/ATK: 2500/DEF: 2400/R: 4/OU: 3)!"

Out of the portal emerged a monster wielding a lightsaber, but unlike Yukon's other monsters, this one looked a bit more like a samurai than a knight.

"When Extra Sword is used to Xyz Summon a monster, that monster gains 1000 attack points (Kusanagi ATK: 2500-3500)!"

As he said this, Extra Sword's long sword materialized in Kusanagi's free hand.

"Time for the knight to slay the dragon! Kusanagi, attack!"

The samurai knight charged at Connor's dragon, slicing and dicing it, causing it to explode.

Connor didn't look fazed at all, "I KNEW you were gonna make an epic counterattack!"

Yukon was a bit surprised at how positive this boy was, "I set one card and end my turn."

"Then it's my turn. Draw!" Connor looked at his drawn card and grinned. "Since I drew Infernity Archfiend while there's no other cards in my hand, I can Special Summon it (Dark/Fiend/Effect/ATK: 1800/DEF: 0/LV: 4!"

A slender, robed demon materialized on the green-haired boy's field. "Now that that's done, I can add an Infernity card from my deck to my hand," his Duel Disk ejected a card from his Deck," which I'll now activate!" He put the card in his Spell/Trap zone. "It's the Continuous Spell Card Infernity Launcher," a demonic-looking catapult appeared on his field, "and I'm using its effect now."

Just as quickly as it had formed, the catapult vanished. "When I have no cards in my hand, I can send this card to the Grave to revive two Infernity monsters. There's only two to choose from, so come back, Avenger and Necromancer!"

A swirling vortex appeared on the ground, allowing the two monsters from the start of the Duel to emerge.

"Now, I synchronize my Level 1 Avenger, my Level 3 Necromancer and my Level 4 Archfiend!"

Avenger transformed into a green ring while Archfiend and Necromancer turned into seven collective stars.

"Okay, can I interrupt for a second?" Yukon asked, holding up a hand.

The Synchro Summon paused; Connor looked a little off put by the interjection, "Uh, yeah?"

"This is the second time you've said, 'I synchronize.' That's not what you call it when you Synchro Summon."

Connor tilted his head, "It's not? Well, what do I say then?"

"You're supposed to say that you tune your non-Tuner monsters with your Tuner monster."

"Uh, ok," Connor said. "I do that thing you just said with my monsters and Synchro Summon the Level 8 Infernity Doom Dragon (Dark/Dragon/Synchro/Effect/ATK: 3000/DEF: 2400/LV: 8)!"

The boy's new dragon was rather ugly, having four eyes, multiple arms, and tattered-looking wings.

"With Doom Dragon's effect, once per turn I can destroy one of your monsters and deal you damage equal to half its attack if I have no cards in my hand."

Doom Dragon charged up an energy blast in its mouth and fired it at Kusanagi.

Yukon LP: 4000-2250

The following explosion sent Yukon flying towards the wall. It took him a minute to recover from the impact and drag himself off the ground, but he ignored the pain long enough to make a declaration, "Once per turn, when I take damage of any kind, I can Special Summon Thousand Blades from the Graveyard in Attack mode!"

Upon saying that, the silver knight returned to the field. When The silver-haired boy got to his feet, he saw Connor glaring at his dragon.

"You're NOT supposed to cause real explosions, Victor! I mean, c'mon, we talked about this!"

Yukon was stunned for three reasons: one, his opponent was actually talking to his dragon. Two, said dragon just caused more damage to him than Solid Vision is supposed to. And three- "Your monster's name is Victor?"

Connor took his focus off his dragon and smiled at Yukon, "Yep. His full name is Victor Von Doom Dragon. Anyway, I end my turn."

"Alright then, I draw!" Looking at the card he drew, he immediately played it. "I summon Heroic Challenger-Double Lance (Earth/Warrior/Effect/ATK: 1700/DEF: 900/LV: 4)!"

The new knight was covered in white armor and its weapons were self-explanatory.

"When Double Lance is Normal Summoned, I can summon another Lance from either my hand or Graveyard in Defense mode. Fortunately, there's one in my Grave."

The second Lance appeared next to the first on one knee with its weapons crossed.

"When did that thing get ther-wait a minute," Connor said, thinking back. "You discarded it with one of your Thousand Bladeses didn't you?!"

Yukon almost laughed at the pronunciation and continued, "I use Thousand Blades and the Double Lance I have in Defense mode to build the Overlay Network!"

Another spiral portal formed on the ground and Yukon's monsters flew into it.

"Xyz Summon! Rank 4! Heroic Champion-Excalibur (Light/Warrior/Xyz/Effect/ATK: 2000/DEF: 2000/R: 4/OU: 2)!

This time, a red knight appeared.

"By using both its Overlay Units, Excalibur's attack doubles until the end of your next turn (Excalibur ATK: 2000-4000). Now, I'll attack Doom Dragon with Excalibur!"

With one swing of its sword, Excalibur cut the dragon right down the middle.

Connor LP: 4000-3000

Unlike Yukon, Connor barely moved an inch when his monster exploded. "When you destroy my monster in battle, I can bring Avenger back from the Graveyard and make its Level the same as the destroyed monster." True to his word, a light shot out from his Graveyard and formed Avenger sitting in Defense mode.

Avenger LV: 1-8

"Now your Lance can't attack me directly!"

Yukon shrugged, "Then I'll just have it attack Avenger." Double Lance charged and proceeded to stab Avenger in the face, making it explode. "I end my turn."

"Then it's my turn." He looked at his drawn card and set it right away. "I activate my Trap, Call of the Haunted to bring back Necromancer!"

The witch doctor returned to the field.

"Once per turn, when I have no cards in my hand, I can use Necromancer to bring another Infernity back from the Grave! I choose Avenger."

Next came the little goblin.

"I activate my set Spell, Magic Planter. By sending Call of the Haunted to the Graveyard, I draw two cards." Connor's Trap Card shattered, causing Necromancer to fade away. "Next, I set another card and activate Dark Eruption from my hand. It lets me add a Dark monster with 1500 or less attack points from my Grave to my hand. I pick Necromancer and Normal Summon it."

The witch doctor monster returned to the field yet again.

"Now that I've re-summoned this thing, I can use its effect again. This time I'm bringing back Archfiend."

With the reappearance of the demon, Connor had reassembled all his monsters.

"Alright, now I play the Spell I set a second ago, Falling Current. It lets me pick a number between one and three and make one of my monsters that Level. I'm making Avenger's Level three.

Avenger LV: 1-3

"Finally, I synchronize my Level three Avenger, my Level three Necromancer, and my Level four Archfiend."

As Avenger became rings again and the other two monsters became stars, Yukon just shook his head with a smile at Connor's terminology. He decided not to comment this time since, at the end of the day, it wasn't that important.

"Creature who lurks in the mysterious beyond, come forth and wreak havoc on those before you! Synchro Summon! Level 10, Beelzeus of the Diabolic Dragons (Dark/Dragon/Synchro/Effect/ATK: 4000/DEF: 4000/LV: 10)!"

This new dragon was bigger than the last two. Its torso resembled a horrific face and coming out of its shoulders were two long-necked dragon heads.

Connor grinned smugly, "What do you think? I've summoned three dragons with nothing but a few recycled monsters. Not bad, right?

"That is pretty resourceful," Yukon admitted

"Beelzeus, attack Double lance!"

The dragon's two heads started gathering energy in their mouths and fired a pair of purple energy balls at Double Lance.

Yukon thrust his hand forward, "I activate the Trap, Half Unbreak! It stops Double Lance from being destroyed and halves the damage!"

Double Lance took the attack head on. It didn't falter, but the force from the impact made Yukon skid back several feet.

Yukon LP: 2250-1100

"Now, since I took damage, I can bring Thousand Blades back from the Graveyard!" On cue, the multi-bladed knight returned.

Connor looked a little annoyed that his opponent survived his finishing blow. "Ok, then I activate Beelzeus's effect: I pick one of your monsters, drain its attack to zero, and then its original attack is added to my Life Points!"

Beelzeus wrapped its tail around Connor and extended its heads, having them bite Excalibur's shoulders. Energy flowed out of Excalibur, through Beelzeus, and into Connor.

Excalibur ATK: 4000-0

Connor LP: 3000-5000

"I end my turn."

"Then it's my turn. Draw! I summon Tasuke Knight (Light/Warrior/Effect/ATK: 1700/DEF: 100/LV: 4)."

A red, samurai-looking monster appeared on the field.

Connor looked surprised at this, "Hey, that's not a 'Heroic' monster!"

"I have other monsters in my Deck besides 'Heroics,' you know," Yukon clarified. "Now, I activate Double Summon."

"Oh, you have one of those too?" Connor commented.

"With my Spell's power, I Normal Summon Flash Knight (Light/Warrior/Pendulum/ATK: 1800/DEF: 600/LV: 4/SC: 7). With my two Light attribute knights, I build the Overlay Network."

A spiral portal appeared on the ground yet again.

"Xyz Summon! Rank 4! Starliege Paladynamo (Light/Warrior/Effect/ATK: 2000/DEF: 1000/R: 4/OU: 2)!

This new Xyz monster-

"Wow! That thing looks like a mix of an astronaut and a knight! It's like a, like a, an astroknight!"

Never mind. I guess we're letting Connor describe the monster this time.

"I activate Paladynamo's effect! By using both its Overlay Units, I can reduce your monster's attack to zero and negate its effects!"

Paladynamo used its swords to bat its Overlay Units at Beelzeus. Once they struck, the monster went limp and all color drained out of it.

Beelzeus ATK: 4000-0

"Now I'll attack! Paladynamo, Thousand Blades, Double Lance, go!"

The three warriors charged and slashed the dragon in the order they were called.

The silver-haired boy saw that Connor's head was hanging. "Uh, hey, you ok?"

"Hahahaha!" Connor's laughter caught Yukon off-guard.

"That was totally back and forth! I summoned a dragon, then you summoned a knight, then I summoned another dragon and you summoned another knight! It was awesome!"

The boy's optimism was starting to rub off on Yukon.

"Hey, wanna be friends?" Connor asked.

"…You know what? Sure." Yukon smiled.

It was getting late. Yukon and Conner had spent the day exploring campus and seeing where everything was. Curfew was about to set in, so the boys were about to head back to their dorms.

"Today was pretty nice," said Connor. "Although that welcome dinner could've been better. Wanna hang out after class tomorrow?"

"Alright," Yukon said.

Then the boys heard 'Duel!' shouted and made their way to where they heard it. Once they got there, they saw the Komodo dragon from before now wearing a sleeveless Ra yellow jacket, facing some generic student. Neither one had any cards on their field at the moment so it must have been the first turn.

"How's a Komodo dragon even supposed to Duel in the first place?" Yukon wondered out loud

"I'm going first," the Komodo dragon said. He reared up on his hind legs, using his tail to balance and gently grabbed some cards from his hand with his claws, "I set a monster, then I set two cards. I end my turn."

"Then it's my turn," said the unnamed student. "Draw! I summon Twin-Sword Marauder (Dark/Warrior/Effect/ATK: 1600/DEF: 1000/LV: 4)."

A monster with green armor and swords for hands showed up on the field.

"Now I play the Spell Card, Blustering Winds and the Equip Spell Card, Magnum Shield! Winds gives my monster 1000 attack and defense points while my shield lets it gain attack equal to its defense, which is 1000."

Marauder gained a green aura while the swords on its left hand became a shield.

Marauder ATK: 1600-3600/DEF:1000-2000

"Twin-Sword Marauder, attack that face-down monster. And just so you know, my monster can deal piercing damage!"

The blade-wielding warrior leaped forward and slashed the face-down monster, revealing it to be a giant tadpole. The amphibian exploded, sending the Komodo dragon flying a dozen feet.

Komodo dragon LP: 4000-400

"When T.A.D.P.O.L.E. is destroyed by battle, I can add two more copies of it from my Deck to my hand," the lizard said as his Duel Disk ejected the cards.

The look on his opponent's face told him that he couldn't care less. "Whatever. When my Marauder attacks a monster in Defense mode, it can attack again!"

Marauder lunged.

The dragon grinned, "I activate my face-downs, Hand Destruction and Draining Shield."

A barrier formed to block the warrior's attack.

"Draining Shield stops your attack and gives me Life Points equal to your monster's attack," explained the monitor.

Komodo dragon LP: 400-4000

"And Hand Destruction makes us send two cards from our hands to the Graveyard and then draw two cards."

"I repeat, whatever," his opponent said as he drew his new cards. "I set two cards and end my turn."

The Komodo dragon drew and said, "During my Standby Phase, if there are no cards in my Spell and Trap zones, I can Special Summon Treeborn Frog (Water/Aqua/Effect/ATK: 0/DEF: 0/LV: 1) from my Graveyard."

A Graveyard portal appeared on the ground and from it emerged a little frog with wings.

"When did that thing get in your Graveyard?" the unnamed student asked.

"Hand Destruction," the lizard said. "Now I tribute Treeborn Frog to summon Des Frog (Water/Aqua/Effect/ATK: 1900/DEF: 0/LV: 5)."

The winged frog disappeared, being replaced with a man-sized, regular-looking frog.

"When Des Frog is Tribute Summoned, I can summon another Des Frog from my Deck for every T.A.D.P.O.L.E. in my Grave. There's two, so I get two more frogs."

"But there's only one tadpole-thingy in your Graveyard!"

"Again, Hand Destruction," the dragon repeated as two more frogs appeared on his field. "I activate the Spell Des Croaking. Since I have three Des Frogs, every card on your field is destroyed."

The three frogs gave loud, echoing croaks, destroying Twin-Sword Marauder and the guy's two face-downs, revealing them to be Puzzle Reborn and Prideful Roar.

"Wow, he set all that up perfectly," Yukon commented.

"Des Frogs, attack him all at once!"

The frogs pounced, tackling the generic student.

Generic Student LP: 4000-0

Komodo dragon: WIN

The big lizard walked over to the generic student, "Alright, hand it over."

The student growled before handing the dragon a… sandwich?

Connor and Yukon made their way over where Connor asked the big question, "You Dueled that guy for a sandwich? Also, who are you?"

"My name is Adam," the now-introduced Adam said. "And yeah, I dueled that guy for this sandwich. I saw him take it from some girl a few minutes ago."

Connor smiled, "So you went to the trouble of getting it to return it? That's nice of you."

Adam looked annoyed at the idea of that, "What? No, I just wanted it for myself," he said before taking a bite out of the sandwich.

The boys sweatdropped. "Uuuh, well, I'm Yukon and this is Connor," Yukon introduced them.

"Okay, see ya," Adam walked away.

'What a piece of work,' Yukon thought.

"Let's get to our dorms," Connor said.

As the two friends began the walk back, Yukon commented, "Did you notice that this chapter had two duels and practically no plot elements?"

Connor shrugged, "Eh, it's just the first chapter. I'm sure some sort of plot will get going soon."
