The Worst Reincarnation Yet
Chapter 9: Unbroken
How did it come to this? When Whitley looked around, he couldn't believe the people around him were the girls from team RWBY and their buddies from team JNPR. The intention was to arrive early in the afternoon and witness the conflict between Weiss and his bodyguard, thereby proving to his sister that the decision he made to appoint Trivia as his guard was the correct one. However, instead of there being a hardcore battle, the entire group was occupied at the library engaging in games and reading comic books.
This left the young man completely in despair, he wanted to avoid contact with these kind-hearted idiots as he didn't want to be dragged along in their problems. Though simply leaving wasn't an option, Whitley needed to keep his word to visit from time to time, unless he wanted the Ice Queen going after his ass and ruining his plans. This is so suffocating! I am not a social person, just handling those fools at the nightclub is a pain in the neck. Back on Earth, I had a decent life, I worked, played games, and read comics, I didn't need friends then and still don't them now.
Having Pyrrha on his left and Nora to his right did nothing to improve his discomfort at the moment. The boy thought the red-haired female was much more attractive since she had a muscular figure, which made her more seductive in his eyes. Her cleavage was clearly visible, and occasionally the boy's gaze appeared to drift there. Focus! I can't spend time doing that. Neo, why is it taking you so long to get here? Whitley began to wonder if perhaps something had occurred. N-Nah, now that I somewhat understand her eccentric mentality, it's the scumbags at Maelstrom that need to worry, not myself.
Whitley returned to reading the news on his Scroll. Since the Xiong crime family abandoned their criminal activities and began working to help the poor citizens of Vale, public opinion was beginning to change. The Faunus community living in the Industrial sector was extremely grateful to them, as the entire area was renovated, and the families now had proper homes and access to better health benefits. Some nobles also started to pay more attention to Hei Xiong as he owned the new refinement center and was now competing against a member of the kingdom's ruling council. "It's only a matter of time before we gather proper support from the influential houses of Vale." A wicked grin formed on his lips.
"Hm? Did you say something?" Pyrrha asked.
"O-Oh, w-was I too loud?" Whitley replied nervously, he didn't have much experience when it came to dealing with women but his recent interactions with Penny, Weiss, and even Neo made him feel slightly bit more confident than in his past life where he had zero relationships with the opposite sex. "I simply found this article to be interesting, that's all, I apologize if I bothered you." His voice cracked a little due to his anxiety, but Pyrrha found that quite adorable, her giggle, unfortunately, caused the young man to feel embarrassed. Why can't I ever look cool in front of girls? I always make myself look like an idiot.
"Haha! Don't be so nervous." She smiled warmly. "Though, your funny expressions make me want to tease you more."
"Right?! He looks like a shy fun-size snowman." Nora joined in, poking the boy's cheek with her finger. "If we are not careful, we might break him." She then ruffled his hair.
"P-Please stop, I'm not a child." Oh, just kill me already!
The sound of a door closing caught everyone's attention. A beautiful girl with black pigtails and green jewel-like eyes approached the group with her umbrella in hand, her posture clearly showed she had received lessons in noble etiquette. Whitley let out a sigh of relief as Trivia had arrived, this meant the battle could finally happen, though, for some unknown reason, she was glaring at him fiercely. Why are you allowing those two to touch you like that? Trivia clenched her hand into a fist.
"Uh?! D-Did I do anything wrong?" The white-haired boy murmured to himself before averting her fiery gaze but ended up staring directly at Pyrrha's cleavage which was inches away from his face, making him blush instantly and swiftly stand up. His agitated outburst was adorable to both girls, and teasing him was quite fun. "H-Hi! I'm glad you made it." He walked to his guard and extended his sweaty hand to greet her.
Hmph! I see you got yourself quite entertained while I wasn't here, hope you got your fill of breasts... Trivia faked her smile while shaking his hand, she then stomped hard on her employer's foot. Whitley's face contorted in pain, he kneeled to check on his injured foot as it seemed to be on fire... I will do much worse than...w-why am I getting this annoyed?! She couldn't understand why she was feeling this way. T-This guy is my plaything nothing more it doesn't matter if he flirts with other girls, I intend to break him anyway after I get what I want, I just don't like others playing with what's mine.
"I'm surprised you actually came." Said Weiss somewhat impressed as not everyone would be willing to duel against a Schnee. "At least you don't lack courage, I hope your fighting skills are on par, I expect a lot from you since he places great trust in your abilities." This was something she was intrigued about, could this strange woman really be strong enough to protect her brother? "Our battle will take place in the amphitheater in two hours, so rest and you better take this seriously, as I won't hold back." She said with a serious tone.
Weiss stared at the bodyguard with a threatening expression, whereas Trivia was not intimidated, as she possessed a devilish smile on her supple lips. It had been a while since she had a proper fight, and her shoulder was still hurting from the last time she had fought Maelstrom, but she was confident enough to deal with a snob girl from the kingdom of Atlas. Heh! I'll show you! Trivia wrote on her Scroll and showed it to the Ice Queen. "I shall show you why you shouldn't underestimate me. I will not be gentle with you solely because you are a Schnee."
Despite the fact that they were roughly the same height, Weiss appeared to be peering up at her opponent due to her terrifying aura. "I-I guess w-we'll have to wait and see." The young heiress realized Trivia's eyes were filled with a primitive drive to win at whatever cost. But, maybe more significantly, why was this unknown woman taking this conflict so seriously, as if she had something to prove? I wonder how much my brother is paying her... though it doesn't feel like she's doing this for money...how strange.
"Heh! You better watch out, Weiss, she means business." Yang pointed out, she understood what the girl's look meant, as she too had that burning flame inside of her.
"I am curious to see who wins." Said Blake while flipping to the next page of her book.
"Oh, I am so jealous, I want to fight too." Ruby couldn't believe her luck, watching fights was awesome, although it was better if she was the one fighting.
Whitley regained his composure and gently grasped Trivia's arm, catching the woman off unprepared and prompting her to blush slightly. "A word, if you please." The bodyguard nodded, then he turned to face the group. "We have a few things to talk about, so we'll see you all later at the amphitheater." With that said, both of them left the library.
Trivia was perplexed since she wasn't sure what was there to discuss, but her attention was primarily on the hand that was holding her arm. He sure has quite the grip for a weak guy. Her lips curled into a devilish smile, this was a perfect opportunity to tease him. Enjoy yourself while you can... The girl stopped dead in her tracks, forcing Whitley to halt as well, so he turned to look at her to see what was happening. "For how long are you going to hold my arm? This wasn't a date, if I remember correctly."
"W-WHAT?! I-I... T-That wasn't?!" He was at a loss for words, his cheeks burned bright red, while Trivia was having plenty of fun due to his reaction. "S-Sorry, I d-dint mean to do that." Whitley immediately released her. "I-I just wanted to leave that place, it was... uncomfortable."
"Strange, you don't impress me as someone who is shy, you seem fairly assertive occasionally. She was thinking back to the days he had described her as alluring and bewitching.
"Heh! If only it were true." Small talk is not my strong suit; in fact, I despise it. In my previous life, I tried to chat with girls I really did, but I never knew what to say and made myself look like an idiot.
Trivia was unconvinced by such a response, but there was no use in probing further because there was nothing of value to her anyway. "I'm curious, why is your sister here at Beacon while you are hanging out with scum like Junior?" It's not very logical since you belong to the Schnee household, one of the most influential families in Remnant."
"..." There was no answer, she glanced back at him and saw his expression had changed, he looked disappointed but also angry. "... That word 'Schnee' will always haunt me." He had no love for that family, nor the glory or responsibility that sole name carried, none of that was important to him. "Ah... I tried once, I did some training but... I would only bring shame to the family..."
5 years ago, Schnee Estate
The weather was awful, the grey clouds covered everything and not a single ray of sunlight could penetrate the denseness of the dark clouds. Rain was bound to fall soon, but that didn't matter to a young child with white hair. Whitley was training in the courtyard with a senior knight from the household, the reason for that was his dream to be like his late grandfather, a brave and skilled warrior who faced the Grimm with no fear in his heart. Everyone across Atlas knew that name and the glory that came with it, and he admired it. He wanted to be just like him.
"I won't lose!" Shouted the little Schnee with determination as he swung his wooden blade, though the hit was parried easily by the seasoned knight. Whitley used all his strength to push him back, but he wasn't budging one bit. The old man took this opportunity and jumped to the side, making his student fall to the ground, then he followed with a downward slash that hit the boy square in the back. "One more point for me." His grin was wide, he seemed to be enjoying this. "Come on, get up and fight!"
Whitley's back was throbbing from the recent attack, though he was still willing to continue, his eyes had a sort of glint to them. Grandfather wouldn't give up, so neither can I! He rose and charged at the knight once again, he swung his blade frantically in multiple directions, but the old knight didn't even bother to black, he was just dodging them with ease. "D-Dammit! S-Stay still!" His anger was taking over and that made his movements sloppy, which his tutor took notice of.
"A knight cannot allow his emotions to take over, or he will lose focus and his movements will become easy to predict." He deflected the impending blow, then he delivered a kick to his student's stomach, spit pouring from his mouth as his eyelids twitched from the searing pain in his gut. Whitley dropped hard to the floor in agony, he couldn't move much, but he knew he'd lost the duel in this situation. "I expected more from you, my lord; both your sisters were far stronger than this when they were your age." The old knight sighed in frustration. "I don't think the path of the sword is for you, perhaps you'd be better off not becoming a huntsman."
"N-No! I-I won't give up!" Whitley struggled to get back up. "I-I'm not defeated yet!"
"ENOUGH!"
When the yell rang out across the courtyard, Whitley and his instructor whirled around to see a scary woman glaring at them with slate-blue eyes filled with scorn for the kid. Her clothing belonged to the Atlas' military, her white hair was wrapped back in a bun that was high on the left side of the back of her head, along with bangs on the right side of her face and a small curled lock of hair down the left just above her shoulders. "This is all over."
"W-Winter?... N-No, I can do better, I promise." His voice cracked due to his fear for his older sister. "I... I, too, want to become a huntsman."
"Are you trying to bring shame to me and our family?" Winter towered over him with a menacing expression. "You keep chasing some fantasy that will never happen, you are not gifted like Weiss." There it was, being compared yet again to the beloved daughter of the family. "She has already accomplished so much, while you can't even fight or hold a sword properly." Her words always stung him deeply. "This house cannot look weak in front of others, so you will never join Atlas academy or any other, I already spoke with father, and he agreed."
Hearing this shattered his heart, his face couldn't conceal his emotions any longer. "N-No! That is not your choice! You don't care about the Schnee name! How can you-..." Winter slapped him, she had enough of his unruly behavior.
"I did this for my sister." Replied Winter with a cold tone. "She is the heiress now and since I can't look after her, I must make sure this house remains strong while I'm gone." Her only interest was to safeguard the family's reputation because of Weiss. "Have you ever thought what would happen if rumors would go around saying the youngest member of the household is a weakling that can't fight? It would only bring shame to us, mother doesn't even want to look at you."
Whitley remained silent as there was nothing he could say. Winter and Weiss despised him, this was something he knew, but he had no idea why. I-I don't understand why they hate me so much?! I didn't do anything to them!
Winter picked up the wooden blade. "No more of this." She broke the blade, leaving her brother in shock, that was a gift from the butler. "Stick to your studies and be like a mouse, don't do anything to bring humiliation to the Schnee name." She walked away, but then glanced back. "A coward like you won't become a huntsman, nor be like our famous grandfather. All you are is useless."
"..."
Beacon Academy...
"Useless..." Whitley repeated while staring at Beacon academy's statue, mainly the two huntsmen.
Trivia stared at him, she couldn't understand why he was treated in such a manner by his own family, though she knew very well sharing the same blood meant nothing to some. I thought he had a luxurious life back on Atlas and was here just to entertain himself for a while, but I was wrong, his life there was a living hell kinda like mine here... I guess we're both outcasts. They had more in common than she had realized.
"Well, regarding being a coward, I think she has a point there, I have a nasty habit of running away from conflict." A punch immediately hit him on the side of his stomach, although it wasn't strong, it almost made him fall to the ground. "Ahhh! Ahh! Uhhh! W-Why the hell did you do that?!" His tone was a mixture of confusion and anger, he looked at his companion writing on her Scroll.
"It was your ideas that brought the Xiong family back from the brink of ruin. The Faunus from the Industrial area are living in peace because you were able to force those Maelstrom bastards out, not to mention the modifications done to better their living conditions." Trivia kept writing more. "You could have left me to die at the bank, but instead you saved me, and you are currently working to free me and Roman from that vile spider, that does not sound like a useless or a coward to me."
Whitley's eyes widened, he never expected to hear such words from anyone, especially from this crazy girl. "... Ha! Haha! Thanks for saying that." Neo is much nicer than I realized.
"Don't get sentimental, you are still an idiot noble. I was simply stating the obvious."
"Heh! I suppose so. Hahaha!" He laughed.
The young man's beaming smile caused Trivia's cheeks to turn slightly red. He looks more handsome smiling like that...uh?... Ugh! What am I saying all of a sudden!? She shook her head. I always hated nobles, they are all fucking bastards who only care about themselves but... not you, for some unknown reason you genuinely seem to care about people, even someone as broken as me. Trivia grasped her chest. Can I... can I really trust him?
