The light shone through the blinds on Sheldon's face. He rubbed his eyes and sat up on the couch. The clock on the wall told him it was just past noon. Not too surprising, considering he had been up until at least 5:00 AM last night. A sigh of joy escaped his lips as he remembered the kiss he shared with Jenny.
"Jenny…" he thought. "It's already mid-day, she must've gone home by now." He got up and stretched, before making his way to the kitchen. As he got closer, the aroma of bacon and maple syrup filled his nose. Curious and hungry, he proceeded with caution to the kitchen, only to see his robot friend frying bacon in a pan and cooking waffles in his parents' waffle iron. He blinked and rubbed his eyes. "Jenny?" he asked.
"Good morning, sleepyhead!" she said cheerfully. "Golly, I was starting to think you'd never wake up! It's almost 1:00 PM!"
"Jenny, what are you doing here?" Sheldon asked. "N-not that I don't want to see you, of course. It's just… shouldn't you be getting diagnostics done right now?"
"Oh, I already did that," she said with a shrug. "I left through your window at around seven, mom gave me breakfast and a check up, and I got back shortly before you woke up."
"Wha…? Why?"
"I wanted to make you breakfast! And I knew you were gonna sleep in late, especially after how long you were up last night."
Jenny turned the stove off and moved the pan out of the fire, then unplugged the waffle maker after taking out the last waffle. "Help yourself!" she said with a smile. "I cook for mom sometimes when she forgets to eat after working for so long, so it should be alright. Edible, at the very least." A cheerful laugh escaped her mouth.
Sheldon filled up a plate with some bacon strips and three waffles. "Wow… thanks Jenny!" he said. "But… why'd you go through the effort?"
"Just consider it my thank you for fixing me up last night. Speaking of… last night… umm…" She scratched the back of her head nervously. "Let's sit down, alright?"
"Uh, alright," Sheldon gulped.
"It's nothing bad, I promise."
The two of them sat down at Sheldon's dining room table, with Jenny scooting her chair a little closer to him. His heart skipped a beat. "S-so…" Sheldon said nervously as he poured some maple syrup on his waffles, "w-what did you wanna talk about?" He cut off a chunk of syrup-coated waffle and took a bite, trying to calm his nerves.
"Well…" Jenny muttered, looking away from him and kicking her legs back and forth. "Umm… so… this morning, when my mom was running diagnostics, we were talking, right?"
"Mmm-hmm," the boy muttered, chewing another bite of his food.
"And uh, she noticed I seemed deep in thought and… well, you know how moms can be when you don't tell them what they wanna know and, uh…" She took a deep breath- or at least mimicked taking one, since she couldn't breath. "I told her that we kissed last night."
"ACK!" the shock caused Sheldon to swallow his food incorrectly, causing him to start coughing violently.
"Sheldon!" Jenny yelled with worry. "Uh… uh… hold on, let me get you some water!" Standing up, she extended her arms to the nearby kitchen, grabbed a cup from the cupboard, filled it with water, and retracted her arms. "Here, take small sips!" Sheldon grabbed the cup from her, taking small sips to help swallow his food properly. "You alright?" she asked as the coughing died down.
"Yeah," he gasped, "yeah I'm fine, thank you." After taking a second to calm down, his eyes widened as he remembered what had caused him to react in the first place. "Wait, no! No I'm not ok! You told your mom?! Why?! Does she want me to stay away from you forever now?! Oh jeez, I can hear her now. 'You stay away from my daughter, you weird boy! Begone with you!' Gaaaaahhhh! My scientific idol hates my guts now, doesn't she Jen? Doesn't she?!" He grabbed her shoulders and began to shake her violently, panicking and desperate for answers.
"Sheldon, chill out!" Jenny said, grabbing his arms and pulling them off her. "Just listen before assuming the worst, will ya? I told you it was nothing bad!"
"Then… then… then why were you being so weird about it?"
"Because it's embarrassing telling your mother you kissed a boy for the first time! All the teasing and ugly crying about how 'my little girl has grown up!' and all that… it's so embarrassing!"
Sheldon blinked. "Oh," he whispered. Turning his attention back to his plate and going in for another bite, he continued, "Yeah, no, I guess that makes sense."
The robot girl rolled her eyes. "Ugh…" she muttered. "Anyways… so, yeah, I told her we kissed and she got all emotional. She said she approves of it, if that makes you feel better."
"It does," he said as he grabbed one of his bacon strips. "Did you tell her you were still thinking about it?"
"I did, and that's when the teasing began. First it was light, with her joking that you must be getting fed up with waiting for me by now, but by the end of it she started saying you were perfect for me because you could probably build her a grandchild."
A bright red blush crossed the boy's face. "I- uh…"
"Yeah, I know, I had pretty much the same reaction," she sighed.
They sat in silence for a bit, unsure of what to say, Sheldon continuing to eat his breakfast. "This is really good, by the way," he said at last as he began to finish his plate. "You could probably become a chef one day."
"Oh, you're just saying that," she muttered, blushing a little. "I'm not a professional or anything, I just know the basics of cooking."
"Well, hey, that's more than me!"
The two of them laughed. For a bit, they just looked at each other smiling. "Umm… was that all, Jenny?" Sheldon asked finally.
She shook her head. "No," she replied. "It's just… it's summer, you know? The first one since we graduated high school."
"Yeah… feels weird knowing we won't be going to school in the fall."
"Are you not going to college?"
"No, and my parents are a bit bummed out about it. I'm thinking about going into a trade school. Manufacturing, most likely. I haven't even thought about telling them though, I don't think they'd be happy knowing their son doesn't want to be a lawyer or doctor or something like that."
"You could become a robot doctor!" Jenny suggested. "You've already got someone who can give you glowing five star reviews right here!"
"I… think that's just a mechanic, Jen," Sheldon replied sheepishly. "I appreciate your enthusiasm, though." He paused. "Where exactly are you going with this?"
She once again mimicked an inhale and said, "Sheldon, we're both adults now. We don't have to do what our parents tell us, right? So, you know what? Screw it! Let's be ourselves. In school, you never cared if you were popular, so why should I?"
"Jenny, what are you trying to say?"
"I'm saying I want to date you, Sheldon." She grabbed his hands and held them, locking eyes with him. "Let's go on a date. Tonight. Just you and me. It doesn't have to be fancy. We could put on a scary movie and cuddle up on the couch together. Something simple like that." She leaned in closer to him. "I know you can fight crime just like me, I've seen how you pilot Silver Shell first hand. You're super smart, you could easily patch me up after a fight. You're the best anyone has ever been to me, and together we could kick some serious bad guy butt, then go home and have a cute little date night. Are you picking up what I'm picking down?"
Sheldon blinked. "Yeah, I understand you completely," he said. "I just… I've gotta be dreaming right now. I must be… I'm still asleep on that couch, and you've probably left by now and-"
He was cut off by her metallic lips meeting his. Taken aback and blushing profusely, he soon went with it, wrapping his arms around her neck and kissing her back. After a bit, they broke apart, staring into each other's eyes. "Still think you're dreaming?" Jenny asked with a smirk.
"If I am, don't wake me up," Sheldon replied blissfully.
The robot girl laughed. "Man… I wish I realized how I felt about you sooner, Shell. To be honest, for a while I thought you only liked me because I'm well… a robot. It wasn't really until the whole Christmas thing that I realized you like me for who I am."
"Well, it helps you're the only person who ever stood up to those bullies for me. I kinda owe you one for that."
"I don't think we owe each other much of anything at this point, Sheldon. We've already done so much for each other."
The two stared at each other for a moment, just smiling. Suddenly, Sheldon frowned. "Hey, wait," he said cautiously, "I… thought you said you wanted to wait before we start dating, didn't you?"
Jenny blinked. "But I did think about it, Sheldon," she said simply. "I ran thought subroutines about it all throughout the night and this morning."
"You… oh, right. Of course. You can think at the speed of a computer, so… yeah. I get it."
Jenny lightly smacked him in the shoulder. "I'm just kidding, ya dummy! I mean, not thinking about it all night and morning, but the subroutine part. But… yeah. I've thought about it."
"O-oh," Sheldon laughed, "I see. But… you're sure you wanna start dating now?"
Jenny crossed her arms. "Yes, I'm sure Sheldon. Why are you so hesitant? Isn't this what you always wanted?"
"Well, uh… yeah, hehe…" He scratched the back of his neck nervously. "But… I just wanna make sure it's what you want too. I don't ever want to make you feel like I… I don't know, pressured you into dating me or something."
Jenny leaned over and gave him a big hug. "That's why I want to date you, Sheldon," she whispered to him. "You're always looking out for me, even when I haven't always done the same for you. I want to make sure you're happy too."
A big dumb smile crossed the boy's face as he hugged her back. "Alright, Jenny, if that's what you want, I'm not gonna argue. I love you, Jenny."
"I love you too, Sheldon."
The two of them embraced each other for a moment, before breaking away and enjoying each other's company.
"Hey, Jenny!" Sheldon said excitedly as he stood up. "Tell your mom you're going out tonight. I'm gonna take you out! We can go to the skate park, shop at the mall, then come home and watch movies!"
"That sounds like a plan!" Jenny squealed as she stood up. "But… what if a monster attacks again?"
"I'll back you up however I can! Silver Shell might be decommissioned, but that's ok! I can always start work on a new suit of armor. One that's… not… meant to trick you… hehe…" He rubbed the back of his neck in shame.
"Water under the bridge, Shell," she comforted. "Alright, I'm gonna go home and tell mom. You get ready, alright? Take a shower. And wear deodorant! I know you forget to wear it sometimes."
He rolled his eyes. "Alright, alright, I will! Now go tell your mom about our plans!"
Jenny laughed as she walked to his front door. Just as she was about to say goodbye, she turned to him. "Hey, Sheldon?" she asked. "Do you still have that suit from when you were in the agency?"
He looked over at her, confused. "No, it had all those gadgets in it, remember? They confiscated it when I left."
"Aww, that's a shame," she said with a fake pout. "You looked really cute in that suit, too." She quickly turned around to hide the grin on her face. "Welp, see you tonight Sheldon! Love you!" Quickly, she walked out the front door and closed it, pressing up against it to listen closely.
After a few moments of stunned silence and the occasional grunt of confusion, Sheldon finally said, "Suits! Suits! She likes guys in suits, of course! Does the one from when I went to my cousin's wedding still fit? No, wait, that was a rental… maybe one of dad's will? Gah! No! If I ruin it, he'll skin me alive!"
Jenny pulled away from the door and giggled hysterically. "Oh Sheldon," she thought, "never change, please. Never change."
With that, she took flight back home.
Across the street, a man in a lab coat watched as the robot girl flew off from Sheldon's house. "Hmm…" he muttered to himself. "I seem to be far too early. Nothing has even happened yet. Well, nothing of note, that is. I suppose he hasn't done much of anything to this world yet, beyond his usual romantic tampering." He turned away from the house and began walking, pulling a stop watch out of his lab coat. "Oh well! Too early, too late, right on time… it's all the same really. After all, I've been doing this for well over a hundred thousand years!" He walked past a lamp post, only to vanish- as if he were never there to begin with.
Perhaps he never was.
Author's note: I hope you enjoyed this two-shot. I will continue this storyline in another fic, so stay tuned for that. As for labcoat man, stay on the look out for a new chapter of Tales of the Visitor. Please read & review. Thank you.
