The Painful Truth - Chapter 14: Eiji's Fate

.

Thursday, September 29 (Continued):

Late Morning, Private Surgical Waiting Room, Tokyo Main:

"Husband?"

What do I do?

I need a signature. It needs to be next of kin.

And Himura-sama looks like she's going to kill me.

"There must be a mistake." She took a step towards me and held out her hand, "I'm her mother. I can sign."

I stepped back again and held the clipboard to my chest. "But…"

"Arisa, is something wrong?"

Oh, thank goodness. The patient's father and Kasanoda-sama walked in. I'm saved.

"She needs a form signed but won't let me." And she took another step forward. I stepped back again, and my back hit the wall.

"I need the next of kin's signature. Kasanoda-sama…" I looked over at him, pleading for rescue. I've only been working here for a few months. I had no idea I'd be cornered by yakuza when I took this job.

"Here," he reached out, took it, signed it, and handed it back. Then he lowered his voice so only I could hear, "You better take off. It's going to get ugly."

I left, closing the door behind me. Maybe I'll take my lunch break early.

.

I tensed up, ready for the coming storm. Only a very few people have seen Arisa truly angry, and Ritsu-san isn't one of them. He has no idea how bad this could get.

Arisa's anger tends to start calm and deadly, slowly building into full throated screams. She didn't disappoint.

"Will someone tell me what's going on here?" She pointed at Ritsu, "Why did you sign that form?"

He glanced over at me, and I shook my head. He got married, he can do the talking.

I hid my smile when he swallowed hard. "I'm her husband."

"What?" She must be furious, the volume's already increasing.

"I'm Bu's husband. We got married in Las Vegas."

"No." Her hands landed on her hips. "There's just no way my little girl would do something like that. She'd never do that to me."

Probably the wrong thing to say, Arisa.

"I can safely say you were the last thing on her mind that night, Arisa-san."

Definitely the wrong thing to say. I might have to call security in here.

"You little…" then her face went pale, then red. "How dare you! How dare you get my daughter pregnant!"

I won't have to get security. At that volume, they'll come on their own.

Ritsu-san sputtered then his fists landed on his hips. "She's not pregnant." He practically growled, "Not that it's any of your damn business, but we were both virgins on our wedding night."

More information than I needed, but I did suspect.

"Then why…"

"Because we love each other. Because," he started shouting, "we wanted our life together to start. Because we wanted something for ourselves. Because it was the RIGHT THING TO DO!"

She reeled back like she'd been struck, but his hands had never moved. Good thing or I'd have had to kill my son-in-law.

Unfortunately, that's when she realized I was in the room and hadn't said anything.

"You," she spun on me. "You knew, didn't you!"

Well, shit. Can't lie. I like my dick attached, thank you very much.

"Yes. I found out during the kidnapping."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"Arisa," I held up my hands in surrender and started walking towards her, "with everything else going on, we decided you didn't need to know. We were all worried about getting her back. Knowing they were married wouldn't have made a difference."

When she came towards me, I thought she would walk into my arms.

I'm rarely that wrong.

SLAP!

"Next time, tell me, dammit. I'm her mother. I deserve to know."

"Next time she gets married without us knowing, or the next time she gets kidnapped?"

SLAP!

And I'm rarely that stupid.

She spun on her heel and headed for the chair in the corner.

"Arisa-san?"

"Don't," she held up her hand. "Don't even talk to me. I'm so angry at the three of you I could kill you all."

He and I stood there, not wanting to breathe too loud and make it worse.

"Oh, sit down you idiots."

.

Married.

My baby is married.

And Junto's sitting over there like it's no big deal. Like it's nothing. Like he didn't just have his world flipped over.

Oh, he's going to pay for this. Just wait until we get home.

The TV came on, and I peeked over at them. Over there sitting as far away from me as possible and still able to see the TV, those two are cowering. I may not be a boss, but I'm a yakuza wife. Don't fuck with me when it's about my child.

My child.

She's married.

And I wasn't there.

Oh, just wait until she wakes up.

Late Morning, Haruhi's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"Oh, how refreshing! Such a nice, private room."

I'd know that voice from kilometers away.

"Misuzu…"

"Oh, Haruhi, darling, are you alright? How horrible what happened to you. I can't believe it. I just can't believe it. How horrible. And to be exposed to such people."

She'd made it to the bed and reached out and pinched my good cheek. It still pulled a bit on the stiches on the other side, and I did my best not to flinch.

"And here you are in the hospital. It's just shocking. So shocking."

"Misuzu…"

"I saw you on TV dear. You really should have let someone put makeup on you. You know," she leaned back, studying my face, "I could always teach you."

No way in hell. I'd ask Ritsu first.

"Misuzu…"

"That color is terrible for your skin tone. I know," she snapped her fingers, "I could make you a beautiful robe covered in frills and bows. Yes, it would be perfect."

Kill me now.

I glanced over at Takashi, but he just smiled back. No help there.

I tried again, louder, "Misuzu…"

"Yes, Darling?"

Her face was all innocent enthusiasm. "Thank you for coming," I sighed with a half-smile.

"But of course. And I brought a friend."

That's when I noticed Arai.

.

Haruhi stared at Arai then gave him a small nod. "Arai."

"Hello, Haruhi. I hope you're feeling better."

"I am, thank you."

Why are they acting so strangely? They were fine when I left after the dog show. Something must have happened when she was there by herself.

What did he do to my Haruhi?

"I brought you some strawberries." He set the basket down on one of the tables. "I know they're your favorite."

"Thanks."

Misuzu was looking back and forth between them, obviously wondering what was wrong too.

She did his best to cover. "About that robe…I can get started as soon as I get back to the pension. Pink, I think, with darker pink ribbon and purple lace."

Everything I tried to picture was horrifying.

"You don't have to, Misuzu. Hikaru and Kaoru are already working on something, plus," she looked around the room, "I don't plan to be here much longer."

"Oh, are you sure, Darling? It won't be difficult at all. I can do it in no time."

"I'm sure."

Me, too.

.

Should have followed my instincts and not come. It's still awkward after that kiss and our argument. I'd hoped we would be past it, but we haven't spoken since my apology, so how would we be.

When Misuzu left her bedside to greet the Morinozuka's, I walked up and whispered, "I can leave if you'd like me to."

"It's fine. I just wasn't expecting you."

"I'll wait outside…"

"No. Stay." The corner of her mouth twitched, "Thanks for coming."

"No problem. We came up on the early train." Why'd I say that? It doesn't matter.

"Oh, Haruhi?" Misuzu came back to the bed. "When will we see you again? I've had the pension painted, and it looks so refreshing."

"I'm sure we'll be back for the dog show next year."

"But that's months and months away," she pouted.

"Maybe I could come for a day or two over winter break."

"Wonderful," she clasped his hands in front of his chest, "I'll redecorate a room for you."

"That's not necessary."

"Of course, it is. Only the best for my Haruhi."

We stayed a little longer, but I could tell she was getting tired. It took all three Morinozuka's and me to talk Misuzu out of the room.

Lunch, Dining Hall, Ouran:

Renge stood in front of the closed dining hall doors. "We have to face them sometime. Might as well be now."

"And the more questions we can deal with before Haruhi and Shinobu come back, the better." Kaoru waived towards the door, "Let's go."

Last night, Akito-kun and I stayed up way too late talking about how to handle the questions and pressure here at Ouran. Then we spent a long time kissing and cuddling. Nothing as wild as the other night. Softer, gentler, and a slower pace. I think the other night surprised us both.

As soon as the doors opened, everyone fell silent. All eyes were on us as we got our lunches and headed for our table. As soon as we sat down, it was like an explosion of noise went off.

"How's Haruhi?"

"Tell us the truth, they were trafficked, weren't they?"

"Is Shinobu going to be expelled for getting her kidnapped?"

"Is she scarred for life? How bad is it?"

"Kaoru, do you need a new model?"

"Is she even coming back to Ouran?"

I covered my ears when Renge raised her fingers to her mouth. Her whistle shut everyone up.

Then she stood and addressed the room. "Haruhi and Shinobu are recovering nicely. They've asked us not to go into details about their injuries. We do not know when they'll be released from the hospital or when they'll return to Ouran, but they both will be returning." She glared at the one that asked if they were coming back.

"As for the kidnapping, the police have explained everything. Their statement is correct. The rumors are not. Neither Haruhi nor Shinobu were trafficked. Shinobu was actively working to expose the ring and rescue the girls. Haruhi just happened to be with her when she was kidnapped, so she was taken too and used as leverage.

"The Ootori Black Onion Squad and the Tokyo Police found the information that led to their discovery and headed the rescue." She clapped her hands and held them up. "That's it. If and when Haruhi and Shinobu want to tell you more, they will. Until then, please respect their privacy and don't ask us more questions."

Once she was seated and we'd all started eating, Koizumi-san came up to the table. "Chika, may I ask how the On Okuri Ball went?"

He wiped his mouth and laid his napkin down. "It went very well. Logistically, politically, and financially it was a complete success. Thank you for asking."

"You're welcome. I'm happy for you all." Then she gave him a flirty smile, "Would you like to get together and study sometime next week?"

Hikaru laughed as Chika choked on his drink. Satoshi pounded him on the back. Finally, he was able to sputter, "I'm not sure what my schedule will be. Can we talk about it later?"

"OK. See you in class," and she took off back to her friends.

"Chika," Kaoru said while shaking his head, "you've got to work on your flirting skills. You don't have the Olympics as an excuse anymore."

"Whatever."

.

How can I get her to stop? I've done everything short of flat-out telling her I'm not interested. How do I do that and not look like an ass?

"Chika?"

I looked over at Yuki-senpai, "Hm?"

"Do you have final numbers for the ball?"

"I do, and it's great news. I think we should all meet tonight at the hospital and talk about it."

Renge picked up her phone, "I'll text everyone."

.

Afternoon, Haruhi's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

I set my phone down, and Takashi instantly started, "Nine is too late. You should be asleep."

He's been overprotective since I woke up here. I'm doing my best to not get angry. After what he probably went through while I was missing, he needs reassurance I'm safe. But enough is enough.

"It's fine. I'll probably take a nap after dinner to be ready. Besides," I tried adjusting my position, "I'm getting really tired of sitting around this hospital."

Next thing I know, he's on his feet and hovering. "Are you in pain? Do you want me to call the nurse?"

"No, don't call her. My leg's asleep. That's all." I pushed the button to lower the bed. "Help me up, and I'll walk it off."

Once up, I headed for the door. Maybe if I walk up and down the hall, I'll feel less stir crazy. Of course, as soon as I left the room, Umeko-san got off the elevator.

"Haruhi, Sweetheart, are you alright?"

When did I become such a fragile thing in their eyes?

"I'm fine. Just tired of sitting."

"Let me help," and she came up on the opposite side from Takashi and reached out to support my arm.

I'm ashamed to admit I pulled away. "Thank you, but I can walk on my own." Her face reddened. Nuts. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap."

"It's alright, Sweetheart. This whole thing has put us all on edge."

The doctor said the IV is coming out tonight. Once that's out, I can do this completely on my own. That stand is so heavy. It will be nice to not need help to get to the bathroom.

"How's Shinobu?"

"She should be back from recovery any minute."

"Seems like a long time."

"I don't think they wanted to move her too much right after the surgery."

I turned around and they followed me back to the room.

Aoi-san was there with a suitcase. "Fresh clothes for tomorrow, Umeko-sama."

"Thank you, Aoi."

I slowly sat down in a recliner and set my arm on the rest. "Umeko-san, you don't need to stay the night anymore. The doctor says there's nothing to worry about. They're taking the IV out tonight, so the threat of infection is over. That bed can't be very comfortable."

.

She doesn't want us to stay here with her?

I sat down and took a close look at her. I really hadn't in the last day.

Her color's better. And she was moving better in the hallway.

"I'll stay with her, Mother. You and Father will sleep better in your own bed."

They're right. It's only been two days, but she hasn't needed us overnight.

"We'll move into the hotel next door."

"Are you sure? Your estate isn't that far away. I'm sure the room is expensive."

She's always more concerned about other people than herself.

Wait…'your estate'? I need to talk to Takashi and Yasuchika about that.

"We'll stay there tonight and decide tomorrow if we should move back home." Maybe she doesn't know? "Everyone else is staying there."

"Everyone?"

"Yes. All the group. Kumi and Yorihisa. Aoi and Honami."

"I didn't realize." She leaned back and closed her eye. "Seems like such a waste."

"They only want to be close to you, Haruhi." Takashi took her hand and rubbed the back of it with his thumb. "After everything that happened, it's understandable."

"I suppose."

.

.

Afternoon, Shinobu's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"She's on her way."

"About time." The doctor kept her in recovery far too long and wouldn't let us in. I think Ritsu-san told him to.

The dividing curtain was already pulled partway, but the nurse pulled it to completely separate the two sides. Then she dimmed the lights.

"She'll be tired and needs to avoid any stress or strong emotions. It will raise the blood pressure in her head."

I nodded. She recognized the dismissal.

.

The elevator doors opened, and they pushed my bed out and down the hall.

Ritsu's still apologizing.

"Shut it, Asshole. It's done. It wasn't your fault."

He'd told me everything after I'd woken up. Then we asked the doc if I could stay in recovery an extra couple of hours and keep my parents out. There was no way I could deal with Mother right away.

"You ready to face her? I can kick her out."

"I'd like to see you try. I need the laugh."

"You need to be still. This discussion won't be good for your eye."

"Let me handle it. If you jump in, it will only piss her off."

"Alright, but if your pressure goes up, I'm kicking her out."

.

We came into the room, and it was just Arisa. Junto must have chickened out.

"How do you feel?"

"Hungry."

"You heard the doc, Bu. Liquids only. Doc doesn't want you chewing. It will jostle your head too much."

"Fuck." She reached up to feel the new bandages over her eye. "Miso."

I ordered it through the hospital app and sat down. I'll do my best to not get in the middle of this.

"How could you get married like that? What were you thinking, Shinobu? You're an heir. There are protocols."

"This really isn't the time, Mom."

"I don't understand how you could do that. I've been planning your wedding and now it's ruined." Her voice was rising. I kept my eyes on Bu's blood pressure numbers.

"Mom…"

"How could you do this to me?"

Shit. That's the straw.

Bu took several slow and deep breaths, careful to not move her head.

"Alright, Mother," she only uses that tone when she's really mad, "if you want to do this now, we'll do it now."

"Bu?"

She ignored me. "I didn't do shit to you. You never crossed my mind that night. We wanted it. Ritsu and I wanted it. Wanted to be married. Wanted to start our lives together. Wanted to have something for ourselves."

Arisa cleared her throat, but I have no idea what she was going to say. Bu kept going. "We love each other and were tired of waiting. That's it. That's the reason. It's why normal people get married."

"You aren't normal."

"No, but too fucking bad. It's done."

"What about the wedding this summer? What about announcing," she waived her hand at the two of us, "this?"

"We can have that if you really want it. We can keep this quiet and that can be our official wedding. I do kinda want to get married in Japan too."

"Fine. Then we'll just pretend it didn't happen and have the real one this summer."

Pretend it didn't happen? Oh, fuck no.

But Bu was ahead of me. "No. It happened. We're married. We're not going to live separate lives to let you live in a delusion."

The room went still. It's obvious Arisa wasn't done, but Bu's voice was slowing down. She's wearing out. Not good.

The soup arrived, but she turned it down. "I can't. I need to sleep."

And she faded quickly with me running my fingers through her short hair.

Arisa and I just stared at each other.

Afternoon, VIP Private Buffet, Tokyo Main:

"You wanted to see me, Oshiro-sama?"

"Yes, Nagata. Come in. Sit."

I looked around the large table and realized what this meeting was probably about. Haruhi-sama's security and Eiji's fate.

Akira-sama and Takashi-sama were sitting on either side of her with Oshiro-sama to Akira-sama's right, and Eiji to his. I sat down next to my primary.

"As Takashi-sama's detail head, you've already been working closely with Haruhi-sama's detail. You should be aware of what's going on."

"Yes, Sir." I glanced over at Eiji, but he was staring at Haruhi-sama. She was doing her best to not meet his eyes. This could be a problem.

"Haruhi-chan," Akira-sama started, "as I explained, we need to meet and discuss the future of your protective detail. Things must be in place before you go back to Ouran." He looked around at all of us, then back at her. "We want your input. We want you to be confident in your protection."

That tiny girl sitting there in a huge, fluffy, blue robe made us all forget her age when she nodded to Akira-sama and turned to Oshiro-sama. "I cannot be confident in my protection without knowing what is going on." She looked at Eiji for the first time I'd seen, "Today is Thursday. Before all this mess happened, you and Takashi were going to talk to me yesterday about the letters." She reached over with her good hand to adjust her injured one. "Tell me everything."

.

When Eiji and Oshiro-san finished walking me through how the letters were received, the analysis performed, and current theories, Oshiro-san handed me his tablet and let me read them for myself.

Tampons and condoms.

Are people's small, little worlds so precarious that they can be threatened by tampons and condoms?

"Well," I set the tablet down gently, "the last few days weren't about these, so what's next?"

"Until they make a mistake or intentionally make themselves known, all we can do is be prepared and continue to plan for contingencies."

My boyfriend is definitely not happy about that. He's so tense, he could push me over with his aura alone. "Takashi?"

"I agree. I don't like it, but I agree. We simply don't have enough information to go on the offensive."

Oshiro-san's voice made me jump, "Now, if we could move on to discussing your detail, Haruhi-sama."

"No." That got everyone's attention.

"Haruhi?"

I looked in Takashi's eyes and saw it. Dammit.

"What else is there?"

"Else?"

"Yes, Eiji. What else? Those letters," I pointed to the tablet, "can't be the only security issue out there that you aren't telling me about." Nothing. So, I kept going. "I know you can't tell me about every little thing, but there's more. More out there that I should know. Isn't there?"

"There's nothing else that would do you any good to know about." Eiji's cheeks turned a very slight pink. "Let us handle it. It will only upset you."

And there it is.

That's what it comes down to.

"Gentlemen," I sat up straighter and looked at each of them in turn, "there is protecting my safety, which is your job, and protecting me from being aware of the threats out there, which isn't. The Morinozuka's, as my guardians, are the only two people who could decide if I can't handle being told something. However, given that I'm closer to eighteen than seventeen, I'd argue that it's my decision if I'm told about all the threats against me."

"Haruhi…"

"No, Takashi," Akira-san gave him a quelling look. "She's right. She not only deserves to but needs to know about the larger threats. How else can she make an informed decision about her security team?"

Finally. Someone gets it. "Thank you, Akira-san."

And I waited.

But no one said anything.

.

There's no way I can tell her that some pervert has been sending pictures of his genitals to her.

How do I even say it?

"Eiji?" I looked up, and Oshiro-sama must have seen the panic in my eyes. "Very well," he sighed. And told her everything.

When he was done, she sat still for a minute, drained her water glass, then cleared her throat, "Well, I wasn't expecting that." Then she met his eyes, "I do not need to see the pictures."

He nodded. By this time everyone in the room was blushing.

"Anything else?"

"We're watching a total of fourteen people to varying degrees. They rose to that level through some type of stalking, either in person or electronic. None serious, just being watchful."

"Alright." She reached up and pushed her hair out of her face. "If that's it for current threats, we can discuss my team. Akira-san," she smiled slightly at him, the best she can with the bandages, "I assume you have some suggestions."

"Yes."

.

I took a deep breath and remembered what Umeko said. 'Watch her carefully. She's probably more tired than she lets on.'

"Do you need a break before we start, Haruhi-chan?"

"No. I'm fine. But," she pushed her glass forward, "could someone refill this and add some ice, please? I can't lift that pitcher."

While Takashi took care of that, I started the discussion. "One of the first things to discuss is your detail head."

"What happened to Miwa?" I knew that was coming. Oshiro and I both were surprised she hadn't asked before now.

"He was blackballed." She looked down at her hands for a moment. "He was given the choice to be demoted to the bottom of the Morinozuka security ranks or resign with a blackball. It was his choice."

She met my eyes and nodded. I'm relieved we don't have to justify giving him that choice or his decision.

When she turned to Eiji and raised an eyebrow, I continued. "Eiji asked that you decide his future role in your security, if any."

"You did?"

"Yes, Haruhi-sama. I failed you. It is your right."

I'm not sure he realizes the disconnect between not keeping her informed of the threats against her and asking her to decide his fate.

Oshiro-san's right. He's too close.

She looked back up at me, "What are the options?"

I saw Eiji tense across the table. I think he's been worried I wouldn't present her with all of her choices. I'm insulted he'd think that.

"First, he stays as your detail head and rebuilds your team. Second, he would stay on your team but be demoted. We'd find you a new head. Third, he leaves the detail but stays with Morinozuka security in some other capacity. Fourth, he leaves Morinozuka security without a blackball. And last, he's fired and blackballed throughout Japan."

She turned and stared out the window for several minutes. Being the trained men we are, none of us fidgeted, but I could tell we were all anxious to know her decision.

"If you need some time to think about it, Haruhi-chan, you can have a day or so."

"No need," she sighed and focused back on Eiji. "You've been with me from the beginning. You were there through the car accident, my father's death, Kyoya-senpai, St. Louis, and I know you made yourself sick with worry these last few days." Eiji swallowed hard and nodded.

"What do you want to do?"

"I want to remain at the head of your detail. But," he broke in before she could speak again, "I question my ability to be effective when I don't have the confidence of the men at this table."

She took a long drink from her water glass. I hope I only noticed her hand shaking because I'm sitting right next to her. When she glanced over at Takashi, he gave her an encouraging nod.

With a deep breath, she proceeded to announce Eiji's fate. "Considering everything that's happened recently, the kidnapping, finding out about the letters and other threats, discussions I've had with certain people," Takashi's eyes flashed in question at that. I wonder who she's spoken with. It wasn't him. "I have doubts."

Her head turned to Oshiro. "Whether they are justified or not, I have doubts. And doubts are not something you build on." Her eyes pleaded with Eiji to understand, "I'm not angry anymore, but I think a fresh start might be best."

.

Not sure what I was expecting, but Eiji just slowly closing his eyes, exhaling, and then sitting there wasn't it.

I can't believe I said all that.

I'm not the little, naive commoner anymore. I've known since I was able to think straight after the rescue that a serious discussion would have to happen soon about Eiji and my team. I wish it didn't have to be this soon, but if wishes were horses…

This decision feels too close. Too personal. And if it feels that way to me, then it feels that way to Eiji. And that is part of the problem. One of my doubts.

At what point are we too close to make the hard decisions?

I'm going to miss him terribly. But that's also part of the problem.

"As for where you go next, I have no issue with you staying with Morinozuka security if that's what you want. I'll leave that up to you, Oshiro-san, and Akira-san. But please, no blackball."

There. Now if they'll only understand.

I felt Takashi take my good hand. When I looked up and met his eyes, I knew he didn't completely agree with me.

.

That's it.

That's my fate.

And I'm not surprised.

Too much has happened to go back to the way it was before.

"Thank you, Haruhi-sama."

"Eiji, you and I will discuss your future in private."

"Yes, Oshiro-sama."

"Take two weeks off, away from the estate. Think about what you want. Get some distance from the situation. We'll talk when you get back."

"Yes, Sir." I'll visit my parents. I can't do much while I'm in this boot anyway.

"What about a new detail head?" Akira-sama asked.

"Can we hold off and ask Ogata-san when he starts?"

"Who's Ogata-san?"

Takashi-sama explained to her while Oshiro-sama answered the question, "We don't know how long it will be until he starts, if he does. We're not even meeting with him until Tuesday."

"But we don't want to rush to hire a new head and not take everything into consideration."

"Like what?"

"Experience. We don't have anyone on staff that has celebrity experience. We need to look outside the current staff, and that will take time."

"It also depends on how fast Haruhi-sama's released and goes back to normal activities."

"Soon," she jumped in quickly. "I had my initial appointment with a physical therapist for my hand this morning. I may not be able to do much with it right away, but they said there's no reason I couldn't go back to school and the office next week if I was careful."

"There's no way we can fully vet and hire someone that quickly."

"Nor should we."

"I can do it." We all turned to Nagata. I'd forgotten he was even here; he'd been so quiet. "I can supplement the remaining members of her team with other security officers. I can even pull a couple from the Haninozuka's if necessary." He turned to Takashi-sama, "Your second can lead your team for now. Besides," the corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly, "you and Haruhi-sama will most likely be together most of the time you require coverage."

Oshiro-sama considered for a moment. "That should work. We'll meet tonight and discuss it." Nagata nodded. "And a new head will be one of the first priorities for Ogata-san if he comes on board."

It was quiet for a bit while some took notes and others finished their coffee.

"If that's all you need from me for now," Haruhi-sama said as she slowly stood, "I think I'll go back and lay down."

We all stood as Takashi-sama escorted her out.

Afternoon, Haruhi's Guest Room, Tokyo Main:

I know she needs her rest, but I need answers, so I guided her to her guest room.

"Takashi?"

"May we speak in private for a minute?"

She didn't sigh, but I got the impression she was expecting this. "Just for a minute. I really am tired."

I helped her sit on the bed and sat down next to her. "Who did you talk to about your security?" And why wasn't it me?

"Shinobu and Ritsu." She leaned her head against my shoulder. "Shinobu and I talked about it a little in the warehouse, but the three of us talked about it last night."

When I was out of the room for almost two hours.

"Why didn't you speak with me?" I did my best to not sound either petulant or demanding. My thoughts about her security have been possessive, and I know that won't work with her.

This time she did sigh. "I needed an outside perspective from someone who knows everyone but isn't so close. Someone who wasn't biased. Both of them know how to be direct and not spare my feelings. Besides," her hand reached up and encircled my wrist, "you wanted to keep the letters from me. I wasn't sure of your objectivity."

I suppose I deserve that. But…

"Haruhi, you're my best friend and now we're more than friends. I want you to be able to talk to me about anything."

"I know." She leaned back, pulled me towards her, and kissed my cheek. "What do you think of my decision."

"It's close to the one I would have recommended."

"The difference being?"

"I don't want Eiji to remain with the Morinozuka's."

"I suppose he could go back to the Haninozuka's."

"No, you misunderstand. I want him gone."

She was quiet for a long moment. "Well, I don't."

Late Afternoon, Tokyo Main:

After checking in with hospital security and PR, I decided to pick at an open wound and check on Haru…Haruhi.

I needed to see her with my own eyes. Make sure she's alright. I haven't seen her since the blowup yesterday morning, and through Tachibana I know she had a meeting with her security earlier this afternoon.

I've known her for years, and we were quite close once. I'm sure she's having a harder time than she's letting on.

The guard at the door didn't hesitate to step aside and let me in. I was just going to take a peek, but she saw me.

"Kyoya-senpai?"

Fortunately, the room was divided, so I didn't have to face the yakuza couple. "Do you mind if I come in?"

"No."

I walked slowly towards her bed. The lights were dimmed. "Were you sleeping?"

"I was trying to, but there's too much going on in my head."

"Maybe I can help." Where did that come from? I'm the last person she'd want to talk to about anything.

"Actually," she gestured to the seat next to her, and I sat, "I just had a meeting about my security detail, and I'm curious what you would have done." She craned her neck, trying to see outside the door, "Is Tachibana with you? I'd like his perspective also."

I called him in, and he tried to stay standing, but she insisted he sit as well.

She went through the meeting, her reasoning, and some of the things she talked to Shinobu and Kasanoda about. I glanced over at Tachibana, letting him know he should take the lead. She probably wants his take more than mine anyway.

"Sound decisions, Haruhi-sama." She sagged slightly in relief. "In my personal opinion, Eiji-san was getting too personal, too close to you. His decisions were not completely based on security, but somewhat on your emotional protection."

"Would you have had him leave the Morinozuka's completely?"

He leaned back slightly in his seat, his only concession to relaxing. "It's a difficult decision, and one I wouldn't have made lightly, as you didn't. In the end, I'm not sure that his remaining with the family will impact you one way or another. Depending on his new duties, you may not even see each other."

She looked down at her hands and picked at the bandages on her right one. Is that a new nervous habit? "We became friends."

"And while that's not a surprise, it's not good for a head and their primary." He said it gently. Far more than I would have.

"What do you think, Kyoya?"

I nearly reeled in my seat. 'Kyoya'? No honorific? Either she's extremely nervous about her decision or much more tired than she looks. I'm sure she didn't even notice she didn't say it.

"I agree with Tachibana's assessment. Also, placing Nagata-san as your temporary head is smart. He knows the layout and has had enough experience with you through Mori-senpai, that he knows your preferences. Ogata-san will find the right permanent replacement."

We were quiet for a bit, each waiting for someone else to speak.

I jumped a bit but hid it well when she finally spoke. "Thank you. I needed some reassurance from security I can trust." Her hand searched through the covers, and she found the adjustments for the bed. Her head started reclining. "I think I can take my nap now."

"Then we'll take our leave."

Tachibana followed me out, and we headed for BOS headquarters and another update on the basement room.

.

After Kyoya-sama climbed into the limo, he asked me to join him.

"What do you think about Eiji?"

"Exactly what I told Haruhi-sama."

"And her decisions?"

"Again, exactly what I told her. She made excellent decisions."

"I was shocked she asked us our opinions."

I was too, but I believe she wanted mine more than his and asking him was the only way to get mine. "Yes."

"She really just wanted yours."

I shouldn't be surprised he realized that. He can read people almost as well as I can.

"Perhaps, but she did ask you for yours."

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, "Honestly, what do you think about how she's starting to include me again? How she's tolerating my presence?"

Do I really want to rub more salt in?

"I want to know, Tachibana."

Alright. I took a deep breath and told him, "I think she's a realist. I think she can see past the need for vengeance and anger. I think she considers Tamaki-sama a true friend. I think she sees some changes in you.

"I think we're all lucky to know her.

"And, while she may want to put some things in the past, your relationship with her will never be as strong as it once was. Some things can't be repaired."

He dropped his head in his hands. "I know all that. We are lucky. I did all this to myself. The best I can do it move forward and not hurt her or anyone else again."

"The fact that you realize that, Sir, shows just how much you are not your father."

Late Afternoon, Ooka Artist Co-Op:

"The rooms are smaller than I thought they'd be." Renge-chan leaned into one of them and looked around.

Claudia-san smiled, "They are wider than the capsule hotels at airports and train stations but are still designed for mainly sleeping. Each has a large storage drawer that opens from the outside, locking with the same key as the capsule. There's a solid panel than can slide over the window in the door for complete privacy."

"I think they're just adorable," I called back over my shoulder after I dove into one and landed on the bed.

"Each artist has one permanently assigned. They can personalize it to a point. Bed linens and decorations, for example. But no holes in the walls. They are responsible for keeping them clean and doing their own laundry."

"Where are the bathrooms?"

"At the end of the hallway," Claudia-san pointed. "They're modeled on public bathhouses, with separate areas for men and women. Along with the kitchens and public areas, they'll be cleaned by a service."

"Excellent," I headed that way to take a look, the women following me.

After a quick tour, Claudia-san escorted Renge-chan and me to the business offices to meet with our newly hired director, Aihara Mima.

.

It was a more detailed interview process than I'd expected, and I only met Suoh-sama at the last one. I've never met his fiancée. It was hard not to stare at the diamond on her hand.

Still, I'd spent the last week getting caught up on what was finished, what was in process, and what needed to be done. Fortunately, Claudia-san is an excellent choice to manage the artists and the general needs of the co-op. I'm in charge of the public image, artist selection, the board of advisors, and any shows.

"We're on track to open November 1, Suoh-sama. The selection committee is meeting for the last time on Tuesday, October 11. Final artist decisions will be made and once their contracts are signed, their studios can start being customized."

"Wonderful. I think several winter events are needed to introduce Ooka Artist Cooperative to the public, culminating in a show for all artists sometime in January."

"I'm not sure that will be enough time for them to create enough pieces," Houshakuji-sama spoke up. "We want quality, not a rush."

"Excellent point, Renge-chan," he raised her hand and kissed her knuckles. Who does that? "Let's consider February but see what the artists think."

"I'll discuss it with them at our first meeting," and I flipped to the meeting agenda in my notes and added the discussion item. It's going to be a long meeting.

.

As the meeting finally broke up, Suoh-sama suddenly brightened like the sun. "I want to stay in one!"

"One what?"

"One of the capsule rooms. I want to test it out."

"Oh, me too." Houshakuji-sama turned to me with a huge smile, "Can we, Claudia-san?"

Teenagers.

"I suppose." Pulling up the calendar on my tablet, I checked for when the majority of the last-minute decorating would be done. "How about the night of the eighth? It's next Saturday."

"Perfect. I'll contact my assistant to set up logistics. My maid will be over that afternoon to make up the beds and come back the next morning to clean the rooms."

At least she thought of that. I was not expecting them to offer.

One of the ever-present security guards cleared their throat. "Excuse me, Tamaki-sama. You'll need a security presence and a chaperone."

"Good point." Houshakuji-sama turned to her female security guard, "Shimizu, you can be our chaperone. You and Tabata-san figure out how many guards need to be in the capsule too and let Iwahara know. She'll make sure enough linens are sent over."

"I'll stay the night as well." Guess I'm hosting a sleepover.

Late Afternoon, SKIF, BOS Headquarters:

"Facial recognition found nineteen of the twenty-seven women. They are or were either Ootori Conglomeration employees or building employees. We've moved on to the next level of databases to scan for the rest."

"Offer them the same compensation as the ones we knew about already. Same contract. If they are still employed, make sure they know we'll facilitate a transfer to a different Ootori company or help them find employment outside the Conglomeration if they prefer."

"Yes, Ootori-sama."

"For those we don't have identified yet, we'll need to ask those…people…we have locked up downstairs if they know them."

"Would you like me to handle it?"

"No, Nishimori-san. Tachibana will oversee it." I looked over my shoulder and he nodded and left. He's the better choice. He won't hold back.

"Unless something unexpected comes up, let's meet next week." Now that this investigation is moving forward, the less time I spend with this the better.

"Wednesday afternoon?"

"Check with my assistant."

I picked up my coffee and tried to act comforting. "Have you chosen a therapist?"

"Yes, and I've submitted the name."

"Good. Schedule an appointment as soon as they're cleared."

"Yes, Ootori-sama."

Maybe I should find one for myself? No. Can't risk the exposure.

"Once the women are identified or December, whichever comes first, you're cleared for a month-long vacation with your family, all expenses paid."

I think I broke him. He's just sitting there, his mouth slightly open.

"You choose where."

"Thank you, Ootori-sama."

"You've more than earned it."

And I thought I'd never learn how to not be a dick.

"And I can't believe I've got a fucking agent."

Dinner, Fancypants French Restaurant:

I looked out the front windows of the dining area and cringed at the photographers still standing outside. Tamaki-kun and I decided against coming in the back, thinking that if people saw us out and about, they wouldn't think Haruhi and Shinobu were at death's door.

From the tweets I've seen so far, it didn't work like we wanted. Vultures.

"Just ignore them, Renge-chan." He lifted my hand and kissed my knuckles. "No one can control them. I don't know what I was thinking yesterday morning. Yuki didn't deserve any of that."

"No, she didn't."

We paused as our second course was served. He chose the salmon mousse and my French onion soup smelled wonderful.

"You realize you sounded like your grandmother when you blamed Yuki."

I cringed at his fork clanging against the dish. "My Grandmother?"

"She did tend to blame people for things that weren't their fault."

I let it sink in for a moment but broke in before he could wind himself up. "You don't need to throw yourself at Yuki's feet. A simple apology will be fine. I'm sure she realizes you didn't mean it. Everyone was tired and upset."

"How did you know that's what I was thinking?"

I smiled and ran my foot up his leg, "I know you very well, my wonderful fiancé." I love watching his face turn red like that. There aren't many people that can blush violently.

"I love you, Renge-chan."

"I love you, too."

.

The fish course was being replaced by our lime sorbet before the idea hit me. "Renge-chan!"

"MMmm?"

"We should invite the entire group to sleep in the capsules!"

I watched her eyes brighten as she reached for her phone, "Great idea. I'll text everyone." Then she shook her head, "Never mind. We're going back to the hospital after this. We'll talk to them then."

"It will be so much fun. We can order dinner in and eat in one of the lounges then leave the doors open so we can talk all night."

"Tamaki-kun," her hand touched my wrist, "don't get your hopes up. I doubt Haruhi would be able to climb into the bed with her hand, and Shinobu shouldn't strain her eye. Don't be surprised if they can't come."

"I'm not sure I want Shinobu there. Or even Ritsu. It's her fault my darling friend Haruhi was kidnapped and injured."

"Yes, it was." My head jerked up in surprise that admission. "But Haruhi's forgiven Shinobu."

"I'm not sure if I can."

She took a deep breath and held it for a beat. "I think you're going to have to. It's the same as her forgiving Kyoya-senpai. Once she did that, the rest of us need to follow her lead. It's been hard, but if Haruhi can come to terms with what he did enough for him to be your best man, I can let it go for her."

"But that's different."

"Because he's your best friend?"

"Yes."

"No. Not to Haruhi. She's the one who was wronged in both scenarios. She's forgiven. The rest of us need to let it go."

"Have you forgiven Shinobu?"

"I can't say I'm there yet, but for the sake of the group and Haruhi, I will be. Right now, I'm trying not to treat her any differently."

"Then I will as well." For my darling friend.

That's when I remembered what Cho said. "Renge-chan? Do you think Haruhi would do an interview for our newspaper?"

"Only for a really good reason."

"Cho and I were talking yesterday about it. With the right interview, we could change the narrative. Change the way the rumors and social media are viewed. Discredit them."

"Interesting idea…"

Dinner, Private Room, Elite, Traditional Japanese Restaurant:

"Excellent choice of restaurant, Kumi-san."

"Thank you, Mie-san."

Then my husband opened his big mouth. "You will be returning home with us after dinner, Nomura-chan." Our appetizers haven't even arrived yet.

"No, Father. I will not." She set her teacup down and glared across the table. "The group is staying in the hotel next to the hospital and will until both Haruhi and Shinobu are released."

I warned him, and he ignored me from practically the first words out of his mouth. "That's fine dear. We know how much you care about your friends."

I nudged his leg with mine, and fortunately he took the hint. "That is acceptable."

Then he opened his mouth again. "But we need to discuss Nomura's safety now." Daizo leaned back in his chair, distancing himself from the table.

"Safety? Father, I'm fine."

"No. Two of your friends were kidnapped and tortured. I want to know what's being done to fix the security you're so famous for, Yorihisa."

.

I was expecting a security discussion. Let's hope we can keep it to a discussion rather than blatant anger.

"We are forming a taskforce among all the families in the group. We're bringing in an outside consultant to review all security procedures, training, and guards. They'll be providing recommendations to tighten or fix any deficiencies. Your security head will be notified as soon as the details are finalized."

"Is my daughter safe around your son? Is she safe around the rest of her friends?"

"Yes. I'm comfortable with the level of security now and any future changes will only make it better."

"I would never let anything happen to Cho-chan." He looked Daizo dead in the eyes, glaring at him. "And I'm insulted you think I'd do anything to put her in danger."

My son can definitely project deadliness when necessary.

I held back my smile at Daizo's hard swallow. "Thank you, Mitsukuni-san." San? Not kun? Maybe he's finally seeing him as a man and not a boy. "She's precious to me."

"She's precious to me as well."

.

That's a relief. I have every confidence Kumi-san and I can work out a contract through our husbands that's acceptable to all, but my daughter's security comes first.

Our family's never been touched by this type of violence, even if it is only Nomura's friends. Daizo and I both have had nightmares.

Our daughter looked at Daizo then me then back at him. She straightened in her chair. "Before this dinner goes any further, I want to make sure everyone here understands Honey-kun's and my position." She looked around at all four parents. "I love him. He loves me. The wedding will happen no matter what."

Daizo leaned forward, but she spoke over his objection. "It will, Father. No matter what happens here. But," a slight smile, one that you'd miss if you weren't looking for it, lifted the corners of her mouth, "we want everyone at this table to support it. We want a contract. We want there to be no issues between our children and their grandparents. We want this to work out."

"That's right," Mitsukuni-kun spoke up. "If we all work together, I'm sure we can get a contract we can all accept." I'm so glad he didn't bring the bunny. In fact, the only pink he's wearing seems to be his cufflinks. I think Nomura-chan bought those pink diamonds for him.

Kumi looked up at Yorihisa then back at her son, "We want that as well. We want you to be happy, Mitsukuni, and if Cho-chan makes you happy, then we're happy."

I really should ask Nomura why they still call her 'Cho' when we've been asked to call him 'Mitsukuni'.

"Good," I smiled around the table, "then we only have the contract to finish."

And then the appetizers were served.

.

Now is as good a time as any. "Honey-kun?"

"Yes, Cho-chan?" He squeezed my hand three times.

"There's something in the contract I'd like removed if possible." He nodded in encouragement. "The Geisha clause."

His brow furrowed, and I knew immediately he had no idea it was in there. "The what?"

Yorihisa-san took over. "It's a standard clause going back generations. It provides you the opportunity to have a relationship with a Geisha as long as it isn't public."

Honey-kun went hot pink all the way to the tips of his ears. He swallowed hard, "Take it out."

"But it's tradition."

"Father, are you having a relationship with a Geisha?"

"Of course not."

"Then you should understand when I tell you I neither want nor need the opportunity. Take it out." His blush had faded a bit, but what was left was anger.

"If you're sure."

"I am." He turned to me with worried eyes. "I didn't know it was there. If I had, I would have taken it out myself."

"I know, Honey-kun." I leaned forward and kissed his cheek. "I know."

.

Well, if that bunny boy turns down a Geisha for my daughter, maybe this might actually work out.

"There are, however, some things that cannot be removed."

"Father, I think the best way to approach this is to consider everything up for negotiation."

"I don't think you understand the seriousness of this, Mitsukuni. We must protect the family."

"Cho-chan will be a part of the Haninozuka family, Fath…"

He fell silent when Nomura's hand gently grabbed his arm. "It's possible those clauses won't be a problem. Can you give us an example, Yorihisa-san?" Mitsukuni turned hopeful eyes to his father.

"Well, once the Geisha clause is taken out, the rest of the reasons for divorce and monetary settlement would need to stay the same."

"I have no problem with that. Do you, Honey-kun?"

"Not if you don't, Cho-chan."

She smiled back at Yorihisa, "Anything else?"

"You must live on the Haninozuka estate in the traditional family home."

The kids turned to each other, and Mitsukuni nodded. "Father…"

.

I think it's time to stop this before it goes too far. "I'm not sure this is the best venue for discussing contract details." I smiled at my son to take the sting away. "Not that we don't need to, but perhaps not over dinner when we've just decided to reopen negotiations."

"I agree," Mie-san said, giving a small half shrug. "The lawyers should have another meeting and then we should get together to go through it point by point."

It looks like Mei-san and I as the mothers will be the voice of reason.

.

I picked up my fork as an entire cake was set down in front of me. After this stressful meeting, I might need a couple more back at the hotel.

I agree with Mother that now's not the time for detailed discussions. The only things Cho-chan and I wanted out of this meeting were to get everyone talking again and decide on a plan to move forward.

"When would you like to propose, Mitsukuni?"

I had to swallow a huge bite of cake before I could answer. "I don't want to ruin the surprise for Cho-chan."

"How about we plan for the contract to be completed before the new year."

"Perfect."

I looked down at my plate and the cake was gone. Did I eat the whole thing already?

"You can have another back at the hotel," Cho-chan whispered in my ear, and I smiled back.

.

The Haninozuka's took a separate limo back to the hotel, leaving Honey-kun and me alone in the back of his.

"All this talk of marriage…" I mumbled as he kissed my throat.

"I know." His lips worked up to mine and he kissed me hard. "You're wearing your cake lip gloss."

"I always wear it for you."

His hands ran up my back and into my hair. It tumbled down around my face when he pulled out the clip. "You're beautiful, Cho-chan."

Dinner, Small Dining Room, Ootori Estate:

I wiped my mouth and leaned back in the chair. "This is exactly what I needed, Akito-kun. Everything's been so crazy. It feels like time has stopped since we walked into the mansion."

He smiled as he also pushed his plate away.

It was a delicious, traditional Japanese meal. The chef here is better than Fuyumi-san's, but I'd never tell her that. I hope he stays when we move in. He must be bored cooking for only Akito-kun.

"Where are we going for my birthday?" I hoped the surprise of the question would get him to answer.

"Nope."

"I don't know where that is."

He just smirked. I wonder if he realizes he looks like Kyoya-senpai doing that. "I'm not going to tell you. Just know it's a good surprise, and you'll love it."

"And to pack for the beach."

"Yes."

He stood and held out his hand. "Why don't we take a walk up to what will be our wing. The decorator and architect have started on some of the plans."

.

As soon as we walked into our living area, she stopped dead. "This color looks better than I pictured."

It's a soft shade of green and went well with the view. I don't mind how she decorates as long as it doesn't look like something Yoshio would have done.

She's only had a few meetings with the architect and decorator. The living room is the only one not needing large amounts of remodeling, so the decorator had it painted so they could test the color.

"I'm glad you like it."

She walked in and did a full 360 turn. "It's perfect for what I have in mind. For the furniture, I was thinking white but not leather. Something soft and warm."

"Sounds good for cuddling." That got me a slight blush, but she's becoming more comfortable with not only our physical relationship but talking about it.

"A small, indoor garden against that wall. Just a meter wide by three or four long. Enough for greenery and a fountain. And flowers."

She frowned at the large wall to the left of the entry. "I'm not sure about this. The decorator suggested one or three huge pieces of art." She spun on her heel, "What do you think?"

"I think," I said as I walked over and took her hand, "that that could work with the right art."

"Then we'll just have to find it." What a beautiful smile.

"What about the rest of the wing?" I started walking backwards, pulling her gently with me.

"I'm not sure how much there is to see. They're still doing the plans for the remodel."

"You can tell me what you're hoping for."

I tried to focus. I really did. But that short skirt and those legs were making it hard. Pun intended.

The master bath she described was very much her and her shyness. Basically two complete bathrooms separated by an area with a proper Japanese bath to share. I anticipate one of us joining the other in their shower on a regular basis.

I do appreciate the separate dressing areas. After Kyoya being in charge of my clothing budget, I've been buying so many new clothes I'll probably never wear them all. We'll definitely need our own spaces to hold them.

"I'm not sure about the furniture for the bedroom…" I smiled as she trailed off. "What do you think?"

"I think we can make it a point to stay in as many luxury hotels as possible on our honeymoon and figure it out together."

She surprised me by swaying her hips as she strolled over and put her arms around my waist. "I'd like that." Then she cocked her head, "Where are we going?"

"I haven't thought much about where, but I did think we could take a couple months and do anything we want."

"Months?"

"Sure," I kissed her nose. "Since the wedding is right after graduation, I can put off starting my residency and you could take a semester off before starting university."

"Sounds romantic."

And I kissed her. Right in the middle of all that construction material.

.

After a hot make-out session that I will definitely not be telling Renge about, we headed for the hospital and the On Okuri meeting.

Doesn't mean we're not all over each other. I'm sitting sideways in the seat with my legs draped over his lap, and he's running his hands up and down my legs starting with my ankles, stroking my calves, tickling the back of my knees, massaging my thighs.

"Ohhh."

"Yuki-chan…"

"Mmmmm?"

His hands left my legs. "We need to stop, or we'll end up at the hotel instead of the meeting."

I didn't think I did, but he has to be smiling at my pout.

"There's something about On Okuri I want to discuss before we get there." He sat up and lifted my legs off his lap. I instantly missed his warmth and shivered.

"What?"

He pulled a blanket out of the under-seat storage and draped it over me. "I think we should switch our places on the board."

"You want me to be a voting member?"

"Yes," he smiled and reached under the blanket to take my hand. "I'm headed into my last semester of medical school and then my residency. I have no idea what my schedule will be. You're closer to rest of the group and the charity itself. You deserve a bigger say in what it does."

.

I never felt right about being a voting member and Yuki-chan not, but it came to a head for me during the ball. She was so invested in having it work while I just tagged along for the ride. It didn't feel right.

"Are you sure?"

"I am. I know you'll excel at it."

"Then we can bring it up tonight."

Dinner, Girls' Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"Hey, you crazy chick, here's your furball."

I set Kasa down in Bu's lap, and the fucking babytalk started. "How's mama's little girl? Were you good today? You're so cute…" and on and on.

Then they both looked up at me, "Thanks, Asshole," she scratched Kasa behind the ears, "having her around really helps."

"Anything for you. You know that."

"Damn, you're going soft."

I leaned forward and whispered in her ear, "Just wait until you're better and I'll prove to you just how wrong you are."

"Damn right."

Then she finally saw the bag in my hand. "Dinner?"

"Yeah. Noodles."

"You better have gotten some for Haruhi."

"I did." That's when I realized she wasn't around. "Where is she?"

"Taking a walk. She's getting stir crazy."

I pulled out the bowls and handed her hers.

"Your parents finally leave?"

"Thought they were going to make me use security against them, but yeah, they went home."

Good. Arisa was making us both fucking nuts with the glares and then acting like it never happened. They don't need to stay here overnight anymore. Not with me here, and I'm not going anywhere.

"Now that Mom knows, I don't want to go back to my compound when I get out of here. I want to be with you."

"I know." It's something that I've been trying to work out ever since she was rescued. "After all this shit, there's no way you're not sleeping every night where I can't hold you."

"That's sweet, Asshole."

"Stop it, Bu. You're going to make me blush." I took another bite, and when I was done, I asked, "But where?"

"No idea." I watched her feed that mutt a noddle but decided not to say anything. I do have some self-preservation skills.

"When are you meeting with your lawyer and that Chiba Syndicate guy next?"

"Tuesday. Why?"

"Think you can get a list of their properties before then?"

A sly smile slowly spread across her face. "I like what you're thinking. I'll send them a text."

Late Evening, Haruhi's Guest Room, Tokyo Main:

"Your friends will be here any minute, Takashi, and your mother and I are headed out for a late dinner. What is this about?"

My oldest son is pacing. He does it so rarely; it's never a good sign. A quick glance at Chika and Oshiro told me they had no idea either.

"I've tried to take your advice, but I can't put it off any longer." He stopped and spun towards us. "Why didn't the police ask about who killed Daiju? They never even mentioned it."

"Them not asking might not be the relief we were hoping for. It is suspicious, Uncle."

We all turned to Oshiro when he cleared his throat. "The final reports will be in by Monday. Our contact should have no problem getting me a copy."

"Can we wait? While Takashi did nothing wrong, we don't want the media to get wind of this. The public is fickle."

Oshiro glanced at his watch, "It's too late now. I'll give him a call in the morning."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome, Takashi-sama. Please don't worry. I'm sure there isn't a problem."

"He's right, Takashi. Try to put it out of your mind and concentrate on your meeting."

"Yes, Father."

"And Haruhi. I know she's strong and seems to be doing well, but the effects of trauma can build and then cause large problems."

"I'll protect her, Father."

"Not protect," Chika gave him an odd look, "just watch over her. Be ready when she needs you. You can't smother her again. You know that."

Several silent moments passed as the cousins stared at each other.

"Hn."

Late Evening, Girls' Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"These cookies are delicious, Honey-senpai."

"Yes, and now that I know Bun Bun's does decaf cake coffee, I'll be stopping by the café on campus all the time."

The alien smiled, "Glad you like them!" then inhaled another cake. I'd ask him how the marriage contract meeting went, but our relationship isn't that close despite the repairs we've done. Maybe soon.

I took a sip of my tea and woke up my tablet. "The ball raised more money than expected. Since we don't need any of it for administrative costs, I thought that the sooner we decide where it goes, the sooner those organizations can start using it."

"How much more?"

I looked around the group. Good. Everyone's sitting.

"Ten times more."

"Are you sure?" Haruhi asked, her one visible eye huge. "I thought the projections were already too high by a factor of ten."

"I'm sure. The finance group sent their final report today. The silent auction was more successful than anticipated, and so many poker chips were sold, they were having to collect them from the tables to repackage them."

"Leave it to Haruhi to come up with the best way to drain the wealthy of Japan dry." Hikaru gave Kaoru a high-five. "Too bad we can't do it again."

"Why not?"

"Oh, Haruhi, you can't do the same thing twice for the elite of this country. It won't have the same draw."

"Rich bastards."

"Commoner."

She stuck her tongue out at Karou and turned back to me. "What organizations have applied for donations?"

"Before the ball? All those that were present that night and a couple others." I listed them off. "We've also had hundreds of applications since. Once everyone saw how successful it was from the TV coverage. Suggestions?"

"Safe House and Kakurega." I had no doubt Shinobu-senpai would bring them up.

"I agree." I turned my screen so they all could see. "Here's a breakdown. First, half should be held in reserve for new applicants. Those at the ball received so many donations, some told me they had to be careful to not expand faster than they could handle."

"I heard the same thing." Satoshi grabbed another cookie. "A couple mentioned they didn't want to invest in new infrastructure with what could be a one-time influx of funds and then not be able to maintain new programs."

"Makes sense."

Then Yuki-senpai spoke up, "One mentioned to me they were going to start an endowment with it and use the interest to fund new programs."

"Maybe we should do that with the half in reserve."

"Oh, it will definitely be invested." I'd already set up the accounts and assigned my personal finance advisor to oversee them. "No sense in it just sitting there."

"We could use the interest for donations and hold back the principle for either emergency funding or new issues that come up."

"And the second half?"

I swiped and showed them the next slide. "Twenty percent to Lighthouse, twenty to Kakurega, twenty to those organizations that applied but couldn't be there at the ball, and the last forty to be determined in the next month or so once the new applicants are vetted."

"That works."

"Yeah. Good ideas, Chika."

I called for a vote, and it passed unanimously.

"We need to arrange for presentation ceremonies." Renge was practically hopping in her seat. "Especially Lighthouse and Kakurega. The board should all be there, but Shinobu and Haruhi should present the checks."

"Oh, hell no."

Renge just tilted her head, "Oh, hell yes."

"Shit."

"Think of it like this," Haruhi looked over at Shinobu-senpai, "it's from On Okuri. The board is presenting it. You're on the board. It's part of the job."

"Where'd you get that?"

"It's what I'm telling myself so I can be ok with it."

The twins burst out laughing, and most of the rest of us smiled. Leave it to Haruhi.

"Fine. Whatever."

"That's all we need to talk about tonight. I'll have the office make the arrangements, and the presenting can be done after you both are out of the hospital and recovered enough to be comfortable."

"Actually, Chika, Yuki-chan and I have something we'd like to bring up."

"Sure. Go ahead."

.

Akito-kun explained about the switch, and I sat still trying not to be nervous. I don't really want to be a voting member. Being in the background and helping when needed really was enough for me. But I understood his argument, and it made sense, so I agreed.

Now I'm not sure.

"Are you sure?" Renge quietly asked me.

What am I going to say? No? Akito-kun already asked.

"Yes."

I'm not sure she believed me.

"This calls for another vote. Akito-san, if you'll recuse yourself." He nodded.

"All in favor?"

It passes unanimously.

Akito-kun smiled at me, so happy. Guess I'm a voting member.

.

"Now can I ask them," Tamaki-kun whispered at me, but they all heard it. I'm not sure he'll ever really learn to whisper.

But I do love the big goof.

"Yes. Go ahead."

He jumped up and threw his arms open wide, "Ladies and gentlemen, next Saturday, you are all invited to tour the Ooka Artist Co-op and spend the night it its capsule hotel!"

I've never seen so many people not excited by a big announcement.

His head whipped around, taking in the confused faces. Finally, Haruhi spoke up. "I think we need more details, Tamaki-senpai."

"Yeah, Boss. What's a capsule hotel?"

"And what's Ooka Artists Co-op?" I can't really fault Akito-san for not knowing. He's been so busy and with the age difference, it's been hard to integrate him into the group.

Tamaki-kun gave them an overview of the Co-op and the capsules.

"So, it's not really a hotel, Senpai. It's where your artists will live?"

"Exactly. I want to try them out first, and I know you all will want to join Renge-chan and me."

"I don't think I can. I'm not sure how my hand will feel, Senpai."

"Haruhi, my darling friend, I think it's time you let the 'senpai' go and call me Tamaki. In fact," he leaned back to take the entire group in, "everyone should call me Tamaki."

"What about me? Can I still call you Tama-chan?"

"Of course, Honey-senpai."

"Then everyone can call me Honey."

"You two," Shinobu pointed at Chika and Satoshi, "drop the 'senpai'."

Ritsu nodded, "Yeah. For me too."

"I agree," Cho chimed in. "We've already let the honorifics go among the girls. This group is too close to use them anymore."

"Agreed." We all turned to Mori-senpai…Mori in surprise. I thought he'd be against it. "We've all been through so much together."

"And drop the 'san'," Akito told us with a smile. "It makes me feel old."

Everyone else was nodding along.

"Wonderful! Now that that's all agreed upon, let's plan a sleepover!"

Author's Note:

And so Arisa gets her explanation and the kids get raked over the coals. There are still some hurt feelings about this, so it's not disappearing right away, but it's not going to cause horrific consequences.

I read that part to Dad while he was in French Polynesia. The connection sucked, so we didn't have video, but he laughed so hard…"I'm rarely that stupid." He just about lost it.

And the long awaited discussion about Eiji. Dad and I look forever to decide what to do. We knew we weren't keeping him as the head from the beginning, but couldn't figure out what to do with him after. He's not disappearing. We have plans for him when he gets back from his forced vacation. In the end, we decided he'd just gotten to close to Haruhi and it became too personal. Nagata's Mori's head and will go back to that when a new head for Haruhi is chosen. Let us know what you think.

And then she asked Kyoya. Or really, Tachibana. That assessment was right. And Tachibana knows her quite well. Another step in the rehabilitation of Kyoya, but their friendship will never be the same. There's no fixing that.

Finally named the Co-op. Ooka is a river that goes through an area of Tokyo known for the arts.

I'm winding down Yoshio's room and other shit. Kyoya might hit one more bump this Fall, but it will be a small one. It's time to move on. There might be references here and there, but we're done with the huge reveals.

So, Cho, Honey, and the parents had a talk. They aren't through. There will be another discussion coming after the lawyers. Small bumps. Nothing big. I'm not ruining their wedding or making them elope. Don't worry.

Akito and Yuki are too much fun to write. So cute. I looked up who's voting and non-voting members of the On Okuri board and realized I had them switched from what I originally wanted. Hence, Akito's wanting to change. Yuki not wanting to be a voting member is just her insecurities. She'll be fine.

.

Next Chapter:

Haruhi meets with Every Woman…why the police aren't asking about Daiju…the girls get good news about their recovery…Arisa argues about where Shinobu will go after being discharged…and Kyoya makes a big decision.
