Author's Note:

Welcome back to the 6th installment of "The Last Straw" series, or what has turned into the Ouran Soap Opera.

This chapter marks the first time in over four years that I've posted without reading it to Dad first. I've mentioned he's out of the country but haven't said he's on a cruise, which means spotty internet. Hopefully, he'll be ok with it when we're able to video call again.

Request for help…please read my request for help at the end of the chapter.

The Painful Truth - Chapter 15: Where does Bu go?

.

Friday, September 30:

Early, Early Morning, Haruhi's Guest Room, Tokyo Main:

BOOM!

Leaping out of bed, I overbalanced and sharp pain shot up my legs as I landed on my knees.

BOOM!

Then I heard her squeak.

The covers were tangled around my legs, and I finally tore them off as I crashed my shoulder into the doorway trying to get to her bed.

"Haruhi?"

A small voice answered from under the covers, "Takashi?"

"I'm here, Haruhi." I finally made it to her bedside and reached under the covers. "You're safe. I'm here."

I'd managed to lift the covers enough to see her face. It's covered in tears.

"Takashi?"

"I'm here, Haruhi. Right here."

The small voice just called my name again. She's so afraid she doesn't even see me.

Lightning flashed and lit up the room even with the blinds closed.

BOOM!

Another high-pitched squeak and she tried to get back under the covers.

They'd taken her IV out, and she's not hooked up to any wires. I shoved my arms under her body and lifted her and all her covers up and out of bed.

"Hold on. We're moving."

I headed back to the guest room. No windows and some sound muffling.

Shutting the door behind me, put her down and curled up around her. I covered us both with all the blankets we both had.

She's shaking against me, and I pulled her tight.

"I've got you. You're safe. No one can get you here."

No acknowledgement. Just more shaking.

I've never seen it this bad.

Early, Early Morning, Twin's Room, Hotel next to Tokyo Main:

"Stop, Hika. Come back to bed."

I finished zipping my jeans and looked up at him. "Are you nuts? That's a huge fucking thunderstorm out there. Haruhi needs us."

"No," he stood up and crossed the room. "Mori-senpai's with her. She needs him."

Mori-senpai?

Shit.

"Fine." I ripped my jeans off and threw them across the room. "You're right."

"Come back to bed. She'll be fine."

We crawled back under the covers and just as we were drifting off, I remembered. "We're supposed to call him Mori now."

"Whatever," a slurred voice floated my way. "Go to sleep."

.

Breakfast, VIP Private Buffet, Tokyo Main:

The grilled fish was dry and tasteless, but I think that's from a bad night's sleep and not the fish. Everyone else seems to be enjoying their food.

I was so hot and confused when I woke up this morning. Took me a bit to realize I was in the guest room bed with Takashi covered by every blanket in the room. Then I remembered the thunderstorm but couldn't remember how I got in that bed.

The nurse helped me with a shower and gave me something for my pounding headache. I need some real sleep today.

Everyone looked up from their breakfast when Kaoru sat down across from me. He's going to Ouran late so we can have this meeting. "Good morning. I'm not sure everyone knows each other, so I'll start with introductions."

He introduced me, Umeko-san, Takashi, and Honami. Then went on to introduce the Every Woman staff in attendance. I only knew two of them already.

"To my right is Omigawa-san, our Managing Director. To her right, Mao, my assistant. To my left, Akabane-san, our PR Head. To her left, Suwa-san, head of Marketing and Advertisement. Then Shiojiri-san, our head photographer.

"Representing Agent for Haruhi is Inokuma-san."

"Thank you, Hitachiin-san. I'd like to introduce Fujioka-san's contact in my office, Kawai-san."

He'd introduced her to me earlier.

.

So far, I'd held back any reaction to seeing Haruhi this morning. They'd left the bandages off her face after her shower. Better for healing, they said. Seeing that cut with that long chain of stitches going down her face just made everything so real. And her hand didn't have the bandages either.

"Before we go any further, I need to ask," I looked her in the eyes, "do you still want to be the face of my line?"

I was ready for anything. From her agreeing to flat out refusing to step in front of a camera or crowd again.

"Of course, Kaoru. This," she waved at her face, "won't stop me."

"Are you sure?"

"Definitely."

A huge weight fell off my shoulders and it's like I surfaced from being underwater. I thought I was ready for anything, but I was more nervous than I realized. Replacing her would have been terrible.

Umeko-san didn't look surprised, so Haruhi must have talked to her about this before the meeting and she agreed. Mori wasn't happy. He must have wanted her to quit. Her agent just grinned like he knew how worried I'd been. Dickhead.

Now the awkward part. "Haruhi, Every Woman leadership and I have been discussing a plan to expand the face of the line to three models."

Her agent's hands fisted. "Fujioka-san's contract states she'll be the face of Every Woman."

"I realize that, but please hear me out." Inokuma just glared at me, but Haruhi nodded. "You came on as a favor to me, and I appreciate it more than you'd ever know. But the last few days made it clear that anything can happen at any time. It's selfish, but if you weren't able to continue modeling, I'm not sure the line would continue either."

"Karou," she sighed, "that's not selfish at all. You have lots of employees depending on your line. You have to watch out for your people." She sure has learned a lot about business in a short period of time. "Please continue."

My eyes flicked towards her agent, but he was quiet for now.

"The line has become more popular quicker than I anticipated. You do a great job showing it off, but you don't represent my entire target consumers."

"Of course, I don't. I'm only seventeen."

"It's like you're reading my mind. I want to bring in two more models. One is a mother in her thirties who can demonstrate how the clothes can be durable even with kids around. The other will be someone older, late fifties maybe. She'll show the clothes can be worn even by someone who's upper management."

"Sounds great. Just make sure they're commoners."

"I wouldn't consider anyone else."

"And the charity tie-ins will continue?"

"Definitely. We get a lot of great press from those."

"Then it's a win-win all around."

"When do you anticipate them starting, and what, if any, changes to her contract to do anticipate, Hitachiin-san?"

Jerk. "They'll start on the Spring line. And no changes to the contract. Haruhi will still be the face of the line. The new models with become secondary faces."

He nodded and smirked. Did he think I was going to try to pay her less? What an asshole.

"Now that that's done," I swiped my tablet, "We're here to discuss the Every Woman photoshoot that was missed on Monday and the October 14 fashion show."

Then that agent of hers opened his big mouth, "Clearly, Fujioka-san's injuries prevent her from participating in a photoshoot anytime soon."

But he doesn't really know her yet. "The shoot was to fill in gaps from the shoots in America, right Kaoru?"

"Yes," I gestured to Suwa-san to explain.

"We anticipate only needing a few hours for two outfits to be reshot. The lighting wasn't right, and no amount of Photoshop could fix it."

"Can this," she pointed to her face, "be covered?"

"Makeup, no," our head photographer, Shiojiri-san, shook her head. "Not with stitches. It could compromise your recovery. However, airbrushing in post-production will take care of it."

"Then we should schedule it as soon as the doctor clears me." Haruhi glanced down at her right hand, "You'll have to shoot around my hand too."

"Not a problem, Fujioka-sama."

"Why don't we tentatively schedule the shoot for the evening of October seventh? It's a Friday, a week from today. That should give your doctor plenty of time to determine if you can participate."

"Alright." She glanced at Honami to make sure she'd entered the date on her calendar. The doctor doesn't want her doing much with her hand yet.

"Next item," I checked my agenda, "is the fashion show on the fourteenth."

"I'll be there. The stiches will be out so we can cover the scar with makeup."

"Will you walk again?"

She rolled her eyes at me. It's good to see both of them again. "Yes. I don't like doing it, but I will for you if you walk with me."

"Just like before. We'll walk at the end."

"Fujioka-sama," Suwa-san broke in, "I must ask, has your doctor told you what kind of scaring to expect?"

I've been wanting to ask the same question. Especially after seeing her without bandages. The cut's wider than I thought and there are more stitches.

"Minimal. When it's all done there should be just a faint line."

"Really?"

"Really," she said with a half-smile.

"Then I think we're done."

Haruhi slumped in relief. "Good." She'd long since pushed her plate away. "I'm going to take a nap. I didn't sleep well last night."

I'm not surprised. That thunderstorm was bad even with Mori there for her.

Morning, Medical School Campus:

"Mmmm." The sweet but bitter taste of cake coffee rolled around my mouth before I swallowed it.

Just what I needed to wake up for my last final.

Though if I'm going to make this a habit, I'm going to need to hit the gym more often. Maybe with Yuki-chan and her leggings.

A couple of my classmates were waiting outside the door. "Hey, Ootori?"

"Yes?"

"Heard the news last night. Are Fujioka's injuries as bad as they said?"

News? I didn't watch the news last night or check it this morning. Too busy studying. "I haven't seen it."

They gave me an overview. "Are they that bad? What about Himura's?"

"I may not be her doctor, but you know I can't tell you anything. Besides, they're friends, so I wouldn't even if I could."

"Sure sounded bad. The hospital press releases say the surgeries were successful, and they're recovering. Can you at least confirm that?"

"Since the release was approved by them and their guardians, yes, I can confirm that." These three have hardly ever spoken to me before. "Why are you interested?"

"Are you kidding?" the only female of the group spoke up. "Fujioka's been in the news for months for this big controversy over tampons and condoms and now this happens. Plus, yakuza are always good for gossip."

Good thing Haruhi isn't here to hear that. Or Shinobu for that matter.

I know what they'd want me to say. "You're missing the point. A huge human trafficking ring was dismantled, and women and girls were saved. That's what matters."

Her cheeks went pink, and she started playing with her hair. "Yeah."

At least she has the decency to be ashamed.

Late Morning, Morinozuka Limo, Parking Garage, Tokyo Main:

"Why here, Oshiro?"

"Guaranteed privacy." I studied Akira-sama and Takashi-sama. Both were nervous, though barely showing it. They knew what this was about. One of us will fill in Yasuchika-sama when he's back from school this afternoon.

"My police contact gave me the warehouse report."

"And?"

"One of the Black Onion Squad officers took responsibility for killing Daiju. He stated Daiju was advancing on Haruhi-sama, and he had no choice if he wanted to protect her."

"Why?" Takashi-sama's voice was quiet. "Why would he do that?"

"I can only speculate. He is Morinozuka trained."

"I want to speak with him."

"I'll arrange it through Morimoto-san."

Afternoon, Kiddy Land Toy Store, Tokyo:

"Look at these stuffed animals, Cho-chan. Aren't they so cute?"

"Squishmallows?" She picked one up. "They're so soft."

"Do you see a bunny?"

We started digging through the big bin they were all piled in.

"Frog."

"Owl."

"Unicorn."

"Look," she held up a gray one, "Godzilla!"

That's when I saw the clerk. He cleared his throat, "I must ask you to refrain from spilling the toys onto the floor."

"Oh, no. I didn't realize…" She started scooping them up and stuffing them back.

I solved the problem the rich bastard way (as Haru-chan would say). "We'll take them all."

"Excuse me?"

"We'll take them all." It was very satisfying to see that snooty look he was giving Cho-chan disappear. "Please take them to the front. We aren't finished shopping yet."

I grabbed Cho-chan's hand and guided her further into the store. Security will handle it.

.

"What are you going to do with all those Squishmallows, Honey-kun?"

I know he wanted to celebrate our finals finally being over, but I wasn't expecting that.

"I don't know, but I'm sure we can find the perfect one to give Haru-chan and Shinobu."

He stopped dead, and I barely kept from running into him. "Look, Cho-chan. Socks!" An entire wall full.

.

"Look at all the Hello Kitty things, Honey-kun."

I glanced over at Akatsuka-san, and he rolled his eyes. Leave it to our two primaries to find the biggest toy store in Tokyo and proceed to buy it out.

OK, not really, but all those stuffed animals? There were over a hundred.

"If Haruhi-sama finds out, she'll suggest he donates them."

"True. What else is he going to do with them?"

"These pens and highlighters are just what I need for next semester."

"Here's a tape dispenser that looks like a piano."

"We should definitely get that for Tamaki."

Once we assured that first clerk they were serious, he assigned someone to act as a runner, taking the baskets up to the front as they were filled. Mitsukuni-sama had me give the cashier his card so they could ring up the purchases as they came up. Since both full details were here, we had a guard to spare. He's helping the driver load the SUV we had to call to carry all the stuffed things.

.

"I think one of each candy will be enough for now, don't you Cho-chan?"

I turned around, but she wasn't there. "Cho-chan?"

"She's two aisles over, Mitsukuni-sama," one of my guards pointed.

I skipped in that direction, thanking him over my shoulder.

"Cho-chan?"

She was standing in front of a huge dollhouse display. Dollhouse…that's right. She's mentioned them before.

"Aren't they adorable, Honey-kun?"

"Would you like one?" I'd do anything to make her happy. "Or maybe an entire town?"

Her smile lit up the store. "I'm not sure I'd have time to enjoy it, we're so busy."

"OK."

I let it drop, but pointed out three to Akatsuka, my detail head. He nodded and made sure the clerk took them up when Cho-chan wasn't looking. I'll have them set up at the apartment for her.

.

"Are you sure? She hasn't asked for one."

"Haru-chan plays Go so much, she should have a portable game." He grabbed another one, "And one for her SUV."

"Maybe she hasn't asked because of her hand."

"Oh," his lip started to quiver, and his eyes welled up. "I hadn't thought of that. Poor Haru-chan." We both looked down at the games in his hand. "Should I put them back?"

I thought for a second. "No. She can wait for later if she wants. Who knows, her physical therapist might think handling the stones is a good idea."

"You're so smart, Cho-chan." He handed the games to the clerk and gave me a big hug. "I love you."

"I love you, too."

Afternoon, Haruhi's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"Your hand is healing as expected, Fujioka-sama." She held up her tablet so we could see the display, "This morning's CT scan shows no sign of infection, no displacement of the bones or tendons. Only the small nick from the knife is visible but blunted as it's healing."

She tucked the tablet under her arm and reviewed my chart. "I see physical therapy's already been."

"Yes," Umeko-san said, "they said they'd be by again sometime today to discuss next steps."

"Fujioka-sama?"

All our heads turned to the door as a woman in her thirties stuck her head in.

"Yes?"

"Ishii-san," my orthopedist waived her in, "we were just talking about you."

She came in and introduced herself as the physical therapist newly assigned to me. "I'll take you through all your appointments and see you to the end when you're fully healed."

"I was just about to tell everyone that Fujioka-sama will be released tomorrow."

I sagged back in the bed. "Thank you, Oinuma-sensei. I'm going crazy stuck here."

"Excellent." Then Umeko-san turned to Ishii-san. "Will you be coming out to the estate?"

Why can't the elite of Japan do anything the normal way?

"It's better this way, Haruhi," Takashi whispered in my ear. "You won't have to come out and battle the press and fans."

"Oh." I'm alright with that. "Makes sense."

I turned back to Umeko-san and Ishii-san. They'd called Honami-san over and were huddled around the calendars on their phones.

"Evening is best, right Haruhi-sama?"

"Yes. That gives me time for anything after classes."

Afternoon, Bunny Café, Tokyo:

A plate full of raw vegetables arrived with our food. Four bunnies instantly surrounded us, one jumping all the way from the floor to Cho-chan's lap.

"So cute…"

And she is. So cute. And she'll be my wife one day.

I felt something pulling on my pants leg and looked down to see a black one tugging with his teeth.

"He looks hungry."

"Then," I scooped him up, "I'm sure he'll like a carrot."

"Just make sure you eat your vegetables too, Honey-kun."

"Ok."

"Don't worry," she winked at me, "there's cake in the limo."

.

We'd finished our snack but still had plenty for the bunnies. Honey-kun was feeding the three that had surrounded us when the second plate of raw vegetables came out. I'm swiping through his tablet.

"That yellow area will open in February, the green in March. They started buying and renting properties as soon as I approved it yesterday."

"That was fast."

"My staff doesn't mess around. They'd planned it while we were in St. Louis." He held out another piece of lettuce to the fat, brown one. "Now that the standard design for the stores and the supporting bakery are done, building and decorating are a lot easier. Plus, they won't be remodeling some of these locations because they're new."

I nodded along, happy his business was becoming so successful. It was a mess when we first looked at the budget and employees. He hired a good staff to come in and clean house.

"What's this note about catering?"

"Nekozawa-san asked if Bun Bun's could cater Kirimi-chan's birthday. She stopped me specifically at the ball. We're trying to decide the best way."

"What are the options?"

"Directly, providing the cake and other sweets, or we could partner with a catering company or other food vendor to handle the party sweets and any meals."

"Interesting. Have you thought about…"

Afternoon, Shinobu's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"You better be here to tell me I'm going home tomorrow."

This young woman is my first yakuza patient, and the experience hasn't disappointed. Security in the hall, her unnerving parents, that attitude, and her terrifying husband. That face. And I know he's armed.

It's like being in a movie!

"Yes, Himura-sama, you can go home tomorrow."

"About fucking time."

I held back my smile. It wouldn't be a good idea to let them see I'm enjoying this. I need to act slightly intimidated. It's not hard.

"There are some restrictions to you being released. If you can't follow them, you'll need to stay here."

"Don't worry, Minoru-sensei, I'll make sure Bu follows them."

Her mother sent him a deadly glare. Hospital gossip says she didn't know they were married. "No, I will."

He glared back but kept quiet. Guess he's picking his battles, because from the little I've seen he isn't the type to back off.

"I'm an adult. I can follow instructions without having my hand held." She looked up at me, "What are they?"

"Minimal activity. You need to stay as still as possible with your blood pressure as low as possible."

"OK."

"That means no school."

"Sounds good to me."

"Shinobu…"

"Not now, Mother."

I cleared my throat before that glare could send her pulse up. "No school through Monday. I'll perform another check then and reevaluate." I took a deep breath, "I'm also recommending full time nursing care to help you stay still."

"Fuck."

Her husband just laughed, "Don't worry, Bu. We'll get one of the Kasanoda nurses to do it. She'll take good care of you and won't put up with your shit."

"Just great." Then her face softened, "Thanks, Asshole."

"No problem."

I'm really going to miss this crazy group of people. With the yakuza on one side of the room and an elite family like the Morinozuka's on the other, it's been quite the experience.

"Do I have to come back here on Monday for the checkup?"

"I'm sure Sensei wouldn't mind coming to you, would you?" The corners of her husband's mouth turned up, and he looked at me with a raised brow.

Does he know I'm enjoying this? That I'm dying to see where they live? "That can be arranged."

"Good," he stood up and bowed slightly, " as soon as we know where she'll be, we'll let your office know."

"What's that supposed to mean, Ritsu-san?" Arisa-sama stood and put her hands on her hips, "She'll be at home."

In a move I know he did just to piss her off, he leaned back, crossed one leg over the other with the ankle on the knee, and said, "We'll see."

I may be curious, but I'm not stupid. I left before a fight could break out.

Afternoon, Private Office, Black Onion Squad Headquarters:

My son stepped into the private office and shut the door behind him. He insisted Oshiro, Morimoto-san, Ootori-san, and I wait outside. This is between him and the officer that took responsibility for killing Daiju.

Morimoto-san and Ootori-san are hiding their confusion well, but I can see it. Ootori-san learned from his father, and I only know from his eyes moving a bit too swiftly among the people standing here. Morimoto-san was trained by us years ago. It's only his posture, and anyone else would think he's offended he's not in the room, but it's because he doesn't know what's going on and is worried for his employee.

Tachibana, on the other hand, knows what's going on and has kept it to himself. He knows it's not his business to share this information with his boss. If he wasn't working for Ootori, I'd offer him whatever he wanted to come work for the Morinozuka's.

When a BOS officer came in and handed Morimoto-san and Ootori-san a printout, I knew they'd figure it out. I could see the police report seal at the top of the page.

I turned slightly to put my back to the door. No matter what happens, I won't let them interrupt my son.

.

He's only a few years older than me, and I recognized him from training classes a couple years ago. I was impressed with him then.

"Why did you take responsibility for Daiju's death, Kuroki-san?"

He stood at parade rest, his hands clasped behind his back. Keeping this as formal and businesslike as possible will help me get through it without showing any emotion.

I can't let him know how confused I am. Or, ashamed as I am to admit it, relieved.

"Permission to speak freely, Morinozuka-sama?"

"I'm not your superior. Please, speak."

"I trained in both the Morinozuka and Haninozuka dojos starting at five years old. I grew up with respect for the art, the families, and the honor instilled in me." He stood still and drew in a long breath, "My squad came in on your heels for the rescue, and I saw what happened. While I'd never second guess you, in my opinion, your actions were completely justified."

I believe I've come to terms with that. However, his opinion is reassuring. As far as I know, he's the only other person who saw it happen besides Chika.

"Your family is in the public eye. More so now than ever. Me eliminating Daiju to protect Fujioka-sama is not an issue. No one cares. If you're on record as having done it and it comes out, it could be devastating."

"I don't need your protection. I'll weather whatever the consequences are."

"And I believe that. I believe you'd make it through just fine. But," he closed his eyes, took a breath, and opened them, "but why should you when a statement that cost me nothing can prevent so much harm."

"Kuroki-san…"

"Please, Morinozuka-sama," he'd relaxed his stance and raised his hands, palms up, "please allow me to do this for you. I've already been cleared for the death. No one in the police even questioned it. It's not reflecting poorly on me at all. Besides," his eyes bored into mine, "I can't change my story now. If I did, the scrutiny we'd both face would be enormous and probably public."

He's right. Changing things now will cause a devastating inquiry.

And I won't put Haruhi or my family through that.

Those who matter to me know the truth.

I bowed a full saikeirei [45 degrees] and held it to show the depth of my respect. "Thank you."

"It's my honor, Morinozuka-sama."

.

This is the police report of the rescue. Why would…

Then I saw Kuroki's name. He killed Daiju to defend Haruhi.

Mori-senpai must be thanking him personally.

Then I took a closer look at Tachibana and called him over. The look on my face asked the question.

"Plausible deniability."

"Should I be concerned?"

"No, just something that the public doesn't need to know."

"What isn't?"

.

Afternoon, Shinobu's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

"What does that mean, 'we'll see'?" Arisa shook her head, "Of course, she'll be at home."

"Depends on what you mean by home, Mom. I'm married now, and we're not hiding it from you anymore. Ritsu and I can have our own home."

"You'd move out?" she gasped.

Time to take control of the situation. "Shinobu, you're my heir. Your place is at the Himura Compound."

"And Ritsu's Ryuu-san's heir. By that logic, my husband belongs at the Kasanoda Compound."

"He does," Ryuu-san barked. He'd been quiet so far. We didn't even expect him to visit today.

"So, what was going to happen after we got married in the summer?" Ritsu asked, his whole face darkening. "Were we just going to live on separate compounds? For our entire married life until our kid merged the syndicates?"

Shit. Hadn't thought that one through.

"Well…"

"Fuck, Pops. It never crossed your mind, did it? You just thought Bu would move in with us, didn't you? What kind of message would that send to the syndicate she leads," he pointed at her. "Talk about telling them she really is just a fucking wife."

"Uh…"

"And how would she keep them together with her authority undermined? What? Did you just expect she'd commute daily, like it's just a fucking job?"

"Ritsu," my daughter tried to break in, but he wasn't listening.

"Or did you think I'd take it over despite what the contract said? You think I could do that to her after everything we decided? Everything we agreed to?" He scrubbed his hands through his hair. "Shit, Pops, I'd quit our syndicate before I'd ask her to do that to hers."

"That's enough," I stood and shouted. "Everyone stop talking before someone said something they can't take back."

.

"Umeko-san?" We were both staring at the curtain dividing the rooms. "Let's get out of here."

"Where?"

"We'll figure that out once we get to the elevator."

"Good idea."

.

"The wedding is this summer. That gives us months to figure it out." Apparently, Mom is still living in a delusion.

"No. The wedding happened weeks ago in Vegas. We have until tomorrow to figure it out." Now to give them a taste of just how serious Ritsu and I are. "Of course, my husband and I could just move into one of my love hotels. There's one about halfway between compounds." I turned my head so Mom couldn't see and grinned at Ritsu. He smirked back.

"Are you insane? How dare you even think of going near a place like that."

"Where do you think we've been spending time together since we got back? It's not like one of us could spend the night in the other's room, now could we."

Over my shoulder, I heard Ryuu-san try to muffle his laugh. Ritsu's face went white. Guess he didn't think I'd go that far.

"That's it. You're coming home with your father and me."

"And your son-in-law?"

"Oh, dammit, Shinobu," she covered her face with her hands, "what a mess."

"Not necessarily."

"Yeah," Ritsu's face had got some color back, "we have a solution."

"I'd love to hear it." Ryuu-san's grumble sent a shiver up my spine, and I ordered him into my line of sight.

"Well," Ritsu sat and gave a predatory smile. That's the one I get all hot over when we're in private. "Dai gave Bu the Chiba Syndicate, right?"

"Yes."

"That includes a compound, right?"

Dad's expression hardened, but Ryuu-san's cleared as he nodded, "Good idea, Son."

"We thought so."

.

These kids.

If it was my daughter we were talking about, I'd probably be as upset at Junto and Arisa, but Ritsu's always been independent. As my heir, I've had to think of him that way, especially when I could be killed at any time.

Gotta admit, they've painted us into a corner using both logic and emotions.

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"Of course, you don't, Mom. But if you want a summer wedding, we get this."

"You're not cleared medically to be by yourself."

"With all due respect Arisa-san, the nurse can take care of Bu just as easily there as she can at your compound."

"She needs to come home," Arisa continued like a broken record.

"Then I'm moving in."

"But…"

"Arisa," Junto stood and held out his hand to her, "let's speak privately."

.

When they'd left the room, Pops grinned at us. "Did you two practice this?"

"Nope," I answered with a grin of my own.

"You're doing fine. Just calm down and don't fuck it up."

.

He led me into the guest room and closed the door.

"You need to stop."

"What?"

"You need to stop talking to her like she's twelve. Our daughter is eighteen and married. She's also my heir. She hasn't been a little girl in a long time."

I sat down hard on the bed. "I know, it's just so…"

"I know, but you're just pushing her away with this attitude. You know her. The harder you push, the harder she'll push back. Do you want her to just announce their marriage to the papers and ruin the summer wedding? Do you want to drive her away?"

My shoulders slumped. "No."

"Then stop insisting and work with them. Despite what they've been saying, they both are reasonable. They're only digging in their heels because you are."

"I want her to recover at the compound."

"Then you'll have to let Ritsu-san move in with her."

She's married.

He's her husband.

"Remember when we were first married? Arranged or not, we wouldn't have accepted a separation like this."

We were young. Just getting to know each other. I was realizing he wasn't the monster I thought he was. He was realizing I wasn't the frigid bitch he thought I was.

We got pregnant just three months in.

"No, we wouldn't have."

He held out his hand to me, "Let's go listen to them and figure this out."

.

We came back into the room and Arisa sat on one of the sofas. She agreed to let me do the talking.

I headed over to the bed and the couple. "We might compromise on the Chiba compound, but some things need to happen first."

"Such as?" Even with the bandages, I can tell her brow's raised.

"With the way Dai and his family left, it can't be in a condition for the two of you to just move in. Plus, the staff there haven't been vetted. It's not secure."

They looked at each other, then back to me. "You have a point, Junto-san."

"Here's what I suggest. Shinobu, you move back into your rooms at our compound. Ritsu, you move in with her. The nurse will join you there. Getting the Chiba Compound ready could take a couple of weeks. Once that's done and you've recovered, you move in there."

They turned to each other again, and I stepped back so they could discuss it.

"It would give us time to make sure it's ready."

"Yeah. I'm not moving you in there until I know it's secure, even if that means I get rid of everyone there and bring in guys loyal to us."

"That's not a bad idea anyway. Reassign those that want to stay with the syndicate and let the rest go. And," she smiled, "we'll need to redecorate."

"Shit."

"What?"

"We'll probably have to tell the group before someone figures it out and tells the wrong people."

"Yeah. I figured. Haruhi already knows."

"Mori does too."

They both laughed. "So much for not telling anyone."

"At least we picked the right people. If anyone can keep quiet, it's those two."

"Alright, Mom," they looked over at the sofa, "we'll move in."

Arisa smiled with a big sigh of relief.

"But it's temporary."

The next sigh was in resignation. "Alright. At least that gives me a little time to get used to the idea. I only found out yesterday after all."

"This way Minoru-sensei will get to see the compound."

"The eye doctor?" Ryuu-sama asked.

"Yeah. He may look nervous, but he's getting a big kick out of being around some yakuza."

Evening, News Reports, Various Locations Throughout Tokyo:

Girls' Patient Room:

"…In an exclusive story received by this station today, we've confirmed that Himura Shinobu was shot during her recent kidnapping…"

.

"Fucking shit!" Shinobu threw the remote and it shattered against the wall. Is that the second or the third she's destroyed? "How'd they get that?"

Ritsu was up in an instant, petting her head and rubbing her arm. "Shhh. Don't yell. Your blood pressure. Your eye."

She took a deep breath and leaned back on the raised head of her bed. "Dammit."

I glanced around the room and hid a smile. Aunt Umeko and Uncle Akira aren't near as shocked as they'd have been a week ago. Aunt Umeko especially has spent enough time in the room with Shinobu to get used to her mouth. On the other hand, my parents aren't hiding their surprise well at all. Even the alien's eyes are bigger than normal. His bite of cake is stuck halfway between the plate and his mouth.

"Guess it's your turn tonight," Haruhi said with a sigh.

"Yeah."

"It's not like we can do anything about it anyway."

I don't think she realizes just how much the information about her condition that came out last night has blown up all over social media. Aunt Umeko told me she hasn't watched any TV or checked her accounts all day.

"Don't bet on that," Junto-san growled as he pulled out his phone. "Hibino will find whoever leaked that and deal with him."

Deal with? Better we don't know.

"So, you both are going home tomorrow?" Hitachiin-san broke in trying to change the subject. She and the twin's father joined us for dinner. I think they just wanted to make sure their sons hadn't burned down the hospital. The twins were sitting there looking like the model of innocence. They weren't fooling anyone. Wonder what they have planned.

"Yes. Finally…"

I tried to concentrate on Haruhi, but Junto-san's phone conversation was hard to ignore. Phrases like 'fix this' and 'end them' drifted in from the hallway.

.

Never a dull moment with this group, that's for sure.

I ate another piece of salmon and wished Tamaki-kun was here to see this. It would either help him sympathize with Shinobu, or he'd be pleased her personal information's being exposed. I'm not sure which. I can't decide how I'm feeling either. Haruhi's details were announced yesterday and discussed all over the press and social media today, so I kind of think Shinobu should have hers out there too. But we're all in the press too often, so I guess I don't really wish this on her.

Being an adult is so hard. I'd much rather be petty.

.

Security Conference Room, Haninozuka Estate

"…Sources say the shot was meant to kill, but ended up in her hip…"

.

"Yes, Junto-sama. I'll do whatever it takes."

I hung up and went back to the table. All the family security heads except for Fujii were staring. Bet they're all wondering what 'whatever it takes' means.

"Hibino-san?" Ishikawa-san set down his tea, "I think it's best if we worked together to find whoever is leaking this medical information. Odds are it's the same person that leaked Haruhi-sama's information yesterday."

He's right. Besides, depending on who it is, them disappearing might be noticed. "Alright. Once Junto-sama's calmed down, I'll discuss it with him." I picked up my knife and attacked my steak. Wagyu. My favorite, but I only get it two or three times a year. The Haninozuka's don't hold back even for staff.

"Are we sure it's not that Dylan person?"

Kawabata can be such an idiot. How are the Suoh's not kidnapped or dead?

"I'm positive. He's in jail." Oshiro's so much more diplomatic than me. My response would have left no doubt how I felt.

"What's been done so far?" Much better question from the Hitachiin head. I used to think Harada was as big an idiot as Kawabata, but he was helpful during the kidnapping. Makes sense. Kidnapping and fans are the highest risks for those twins. But I'd pity whoever was dumb enough to kidnap them. A couple hours in, they'd be paying the Hitachiin's to take them back.

"Hospital security's been interviewing those staff with direct access and reviewing network security to see if anyone suspicious accessed the patient records."

Just then a phone rang, and we all looked over at Morimoto.

"Yes, Ootori-sama?"

.

Family Dining Room, Shido Estate:

"…While the gunshot wound was a simple through-and-through, our source tells us Himura Shinobu's eye injury is much more serious…"

.

"How is her eye?" My wife had finally finished her third plate of noodles and was leaning back rubbing her swollen belly. "Is there permanent damage?"

"Her doctor expects a full recovery. Detached retinas aren't unusual, so he does the procedure all the time."

"Didn't you see her when you went to visit?"

Both Akito and I stared first at Yuki-chan then Fuyumi. "I didn't know you'd visited."

"Yes, I went after lunch today. But," she laughed, "I never made it to the room. Umeko-san and Haruhi were in the hallway and stopped me. I heard people yelling, and they told me they were giving them some privacy."

Yuki-chan leaned forward, "Do you know what they were arguing about?"

"No, and if Haruhi and Umeko-san knew, they didn't mention it." I watched her hand circle her belly. I can't wait to see our baby. "We ended up in a lounge on the opposite end of the floor from their room."

"I wish I'd known you were going. I would have tagged along."

"I know, Umeji, but you had that business meeting this afternoon and it had already been rescheduled twice. Besides," she reached out and put her hand over mine, "I'm sure we can visit Haruhi at the Morinozuka's next week once things calm down."

Then the lightbulb went on over her head, and I braced myself.

"We could have them over for dinner! I'm sure Sota would love to see her. He's too young to visit in the hospital, and I didn't want to explain why she was injured."

.

Leave it to my sister to turn a kidnapping into a social event.

"I'm not sure she'll be up to anything social for a while. It will be another week before the stiches on her face come out, and she's just starting physical therapy for her hand."

"Oh," she waved her hand in dismissal, "it can't hurt to ask. The worst she can say is no, right?"

"Right." Or Umeko-san can say it for her. Maybe I'll warn them the invitation is coming and to not feel bad asking to put it off another week or two.

"She's going home tomorrow. I assume you'll be moving back here, Yuki-chan?"

"Yes." She looks amazing tonight. She changed out of her uniform and into a short skirt and a sweater that shows her midriff. All I want to do is kiss that exposed skin.

"Do you want me to send your maid over to pack for you?"

"No." It came out in panic, then she took a breath and continued, "No, I can do it. I really have barely unpacked anyway."

Fuyumi's eyes caught mine, and I knew she knew we were sharing a room. It's not like we're keeping it a secret, we're just not telling anyone. The group knows.

"Alright. I know Sota will be glad you're back. Umeji bought him another couple Lego sets."

Yuki-chan just smiled, "Then I'll just have to help him build them."

She'll be a great mother if we decide to have kids.

.

Ootori Limo, Headed for Dinner with Tamaki:

"…the first surgery was not successful. A second was performed yesterday morning, but it's not yet known if it fixed the problem…"

.

"I want you and an entire squad of BOS officers descending on that hospital tomorrow morning. Find whoever's leaking private information about two of our VIP patients and toss them in a cell."

"I don't care. They're making the Ootori Conglomeration and Tokyo Main look like idiots. How can we reassure the rest of our patients of their data security when we've got medical details being leaked to the press?"

"Then talk to the rest of them and figure it out. I want their head on a platter by tomorrow night."

I tapped the screen to hang up. Not satisfying at all. Makes me miss my flip phone. At least that I could slam shut.

"Perhaps some time in the gym tonight, Kyoya-sama?"

I'd left the partition down and Tachibana was looking at me over his shoulder through it.

"Not after a full seven courses of heavy French food with a different wine for each. Besides, I'm not working out at the hotel gym."

"They're being discharged tomorrow. There's really no reason you couldn't move back to your apartment tonight."

"Doesn't matter. I still wouldn't hit the gym after that meal." I leaned back and had to stop myself from loosening my tie. There'll be press at the restaurant. "No, I'll wait until tomorrow. Have my maid arrive at nine to pack and check me out."

"You'll be awake that early?"

I shot him my shadow king glare. "Yes. I want to see her before she leaves. I don't know when I'll be able to next. I'm not welcome at the Morinozuka's."

And it's my own damn fault.

"Call my special friend and set up an appointment for tomorrow night at eleven." I'll blow off some steam before I have to go back to Stanford. The sex always takes the edge off.

"Yes, Ootori-sama."

.

Security Offices, Tokyo Main:

"…Our source confirms she was backhanded, and her cheekbone was fractured due to a heavy ring…"

.

I hung up and assessed my security officers.

"That was Morimoto-san, head of the Black Onion Squad. He'll be here tomorrow with some officers to help us with our investigations."

"Good. Maybe that will scare whoever's doing this, and they'll mess up."

"Or confess."

I looked down at my tablet and rolled my eyes at the new guy's comment. One of my other officers jumped in before I could.

"Having this place crawling with not only hospital security but even more Black Onion Squad security will not get anyone to confess. If they haven't figured it out yet, that's when they'll realize just how much trouble they're in. We need to all watch out for someone who's acting out of character. That will be the leaker."

"Exactly," I nodded. "And since we don't know if this person is on days or nights, those of you working tonight pay attention. It could be as simple as them looking at you a little too much when you walk by."

I dismissed them and went home. Tomorrow's going to be a long day.

.

Inokuma's Office, Haruhi's Agent's Firm:

"…And finally, our source indicates that both girls might be released tomorrow. We'll be there and hope to bring you exclusive footage of their departure…"

.

I'd invited Himura-san's new agent, Takemoto, over to watch the evening news and strategize. We're enjoying some excellent sake and discussing strategy.

"I'm sure their security will have them leaving through the parking garage. They won't get pictures."

"Pity. It wouldn't be a bad thing."

He grunted in agreement and finished his glass.

"Another?"

"Sure." And I poured us both one. "Is everything's set for their news panel on Sunday?"

"Yes, my assistant's confirmed. We'll prep them both over video tomorrow night." I finished my drink and decided three was enough. "I'll be meeting Fujioka-san at her home Sunday morning and escorting her to the studio. I suggest you do the same with Himura-san."

"Good idea. I haven't spent much time with her yet, and we need to get to know each other."

Well, if anyone can, it's him. He's been a press agent for some people with what we call questionable pasts. That's why I recommended him.

"Did someone from On Okuri contact you regarding the check presentations?"

Evening, Fancypants Five-Star French Restaurant:

Why did I let this idiot talk me into this?

"Where's Renge-san, Tamaki-san? Trouble in paradise?"

I can't believe we're taking questions and stopping for pictures in front of the restaurant.

"Renge-chan's eating dinner with Haruhi and Shinobu. I'm here to spend time with my best friend."

He tried to get his arm around me, but I managed to dodge without it being obvious.

"How are they doing? Is Himura-san blind in one eye?"

Fucking vultures.

"They're both doing fine. I'm sure they're thankful for your concern."

I'm sure they absolutely are not.

"Tamaki," I grabbed his elbow and started dragging him towards the door, "you've said enough."

"Ootori-san! You're missing quite a lot of classes. Will your grades suffer?"

I didn't dignify that. My grades never suffer.

.

"MMmmmm." My anchovy canape melted in my mouth, and I followed it with a sip of martini. "Delicious."

Kyoya nodded as he swallowed his caviar on toast points. He surprised me by ordering three fingers of whiskey.

"So, why haven't you left for Stanford yet? Aren't you worried about getting behind?"

"Haruhi's still in the hospital."

"But she's better," I waved my hand towards the waiter and another martini instantly appeared. "She'll be released tomorrow. The danger's over."

"It's not that simple."

Kyoya and I have been best friends for years, and I know him better than almost anyone except for Tachibana. His stiff posture and how his fingernails are white from the grip he has on his glass…he's uncomfortable with this topic. But why? Haruhi thanked him. They all know he's my best man. She even said he's not the same person he was before.

He slowly lifted another caviar topped toast point to his mouth. As I watched him chew, I realized he's not really enjoying the food. But he agreed to come out with me. He stood with me for the press.

Then it hit me. He misses us.

"You don't want to leave, do you?"

He slumped slightly in his seat, proving he's definitely not his father, and sighed, "No. Not particularly."

"Then don't."

"That means leaving Stanford and enrolling at Todi."

"Yes! The next semester doesn't start for three weeks. That's plenty of time to get signed up for classes. We can have lunch, and study, and hang out, and maybe we'll even have a class or two together."

He cleared his throat and glared at me. I'm practically hopping in my seat. "I don't care. I won't calm down. This is amazing news!"

"I haven't said I'd stay yet. Mori-senpai and Honey-senpai are there. Do you really think they want to see me all the time?"

"Haruhi forgave you."

"No, she thanked me. I'm not sure she'll ever forgive me. Besides," he finished his whisky and refused another, "what do I do about my security team members that are taking classes at Stanford?"

I just tilted my head and stared. The great Ootori Kyoya. The Ootori Kyoya who always knows what to do. Why's he fighting this?

Our soup course came out with an excellent bottle of wine. As soon as the waiter left, I plunged on, "Let them finish the semester then transfer back. Or they can leave with you and enroll here. You'll need them at Todi anyway. Kyoya," it's time to give him that serious look back, "you're making this harder than it needs to be."

He's hesitating!

Keep going, Tamaki.

"I see the changes in you. Haruhi sees them too, or she wouldn't have said what she said. She said you were a different person now. You know she doesn't say things she doesn't mean."

He turned back to his soup, so I did too. Maybe if I leave him alone to think.

A few minutes later, he finally said, "Tamaki, Haruhi might have thanked me publicly, but I highly doubt she wants to see me every day."

"Why would it be every day? Why would you see her at all? You'll be a Todi and she'll be at Ouran."

"Only through next semester. Then she'll be at Todi."

"And not taking the same classes as you. You two aren't even majoring in the same thing. You'll be in different buildings."

"It's not that simple."

"Yes, it is."

"I'll think about it."

That's OK for now, but I've got five more courses to convince him.

Night, Neon:

Our limo pulled up and the line of girls waiting to get in went down the block and around the corner.

Karou glared at me.

"Well, I might have tweeted that I was coming tonight."

"Dammit, Satoshi. Every single one of those girls will be asking about Haruhi and Shinobu. Every. Single. One."

"Hey, some of them came to dance with me." I pointed at him and Hikaru, "Or a Hitachiin twin."

"Yeah, Kaoru. It won't be that bad. Just don't answer any questions."

"Doesn't matter if we do or not. You know they're going to post all kinds of shit."

"Then what's the problem, little brother?"

Kaoru just rolled his eyes. "Will you cut that shit out."

"Nope."

.

The bouncer on the door just waved us in. Kaoru and Satoshi disappeared through the door, but I turned and waved at the girls. "Come find me when you get in! I'll save a dance for you."

A lot of them got that on video, and I bet some were even streaming. Maybe it will take some of the attention off Haruhi and Shinobu.

I went straight to the bar and ordered a round for all the girls around me.

Because we come so often, Mori got us gold bar-code bracelets that we just bring with us. Saves time. The bartender scanned mine and started handing out sodas, teas, and waters.

"Thanks."

"No problem," I said as I spun around. Damn. Is that painted on?

"You like?" she asked as she did a slow 360.

"I do." And I did. A play on a kimono, but without sleeves and with a skirt that almost didn't cover what it should. Then she cocked her hip and I saw panties that matched the red floral print. "Very hot."

"How about a dance. I guarantee I feel better than I look."

I'd have to be an idiot to turn that down. And I'm no idiot.

.

"Did you have any idea what Himura-san was doing? That she was trying to save those girls?"

We know the owner. I wonder if we could get them to turn up the volume.

"I mean, it's so amazing. A yakuza fighting crime."

"I know, right? Maybe they'll make a movie."

I'm dancing with five girls right now, and they're all asking questions, but it's like they don't even realize I'm not answering. Do I even need to be there for this?

"Oh, I could play Himura-san."

"You? No one would ever believe you're yakuza."

"I bet I could play Fujioka-san."

"No way."

"Yes way."

Finally, the one who hadn't said anything yet danced close and wrapped her arms around my neck. "I'm having so much fun with you, Satoshi. Just ignore them."

I spun her out and back then we shimmied away from the others.

I knew there'd be at least a couple of girls wanting to be here just for us.

.

Satoshi and Hika were out on the floor, but I'm not really in the mood so I'm shooting monsters on the arcade games.

"I wonder how long it will be before she can come dancing again."

"Not too long, I hope. Watching her and Kasanoda is soooo hot. I wish someone would look at me the way he looks at her."

"I know. And that body."

"Which? His or hers?"

"Either. Both."

I snorted and quickly checked to make sure they didn't hear me. They were headed for the picture booths.

"Hey, are you Karou?"

I leaned on the game and gave her our trademark grin. "What makes you think I'm not Hikaru?"

"He's more outgoing, so I assume that's him on the dancefloor."

That logic deserves a reward. "Correct." I bowed slightly, "Hitachiin Kaoru at your service."

Her giggle made me focus on her mouth.

Nice lips.

.

"Have you seen Kaoru?"

Satoshi just pointed with his water bottle.

"Damn."

"Yeah."

"Looks like something I'd design."

Short skirt. Basically two rectangles with leather straps holding them together on the sides. The top was another rectangle covering the front with the leather crisscrossing the back to hold it on.

She's sitting on his lap while he's sitting on a motorcycle at a driving game. What a way to teach someone to play.

"Lucky dog."

I rolled my eyes, "Satoshi, you can be just as lucky as that and more, you just choose to be more proper with the girls."

"Yeah."

"Downside to the Morinozuka honor."

"Nope. It's a good thing. The girls know I don't do stuff like that, so they don't even ask anymore. It's kinda freeing."

"Whatever."

"Hey, Hitachiin." I spun on my heal and found my painted on kimono girl. "Wanna dance?"

"Do I ever."

.

Shit.

He's a friend of the owner, so I gotta be careful.

"Hey," I tapped him on the shoulder, and he pulled his mouth off hers. "Either cool down or take that outside."

"Sorry, man. Got carried away."

No kidding. That tiny kimono is pretty sexy.

"Just keep your tongue out of her throat."

As I walked away, I heard him ask if she's ever seen the inside of a limo.

Evening, Fancypants Five-Star French Restaurant:

We'd made it to the cheese course, and I indulged in a full glass of wine. I'd only sipped at the ones from previous courses.

Tamaki's shown restraint I didn't know he had. He hasn't brought up me staying since the soup was taken away. We've mainly been talking about his artist co-op. It sounds like it will be a success. If the art isn't too atrocious, I'll buy a piece for a conference room or something.

"Kyoya…"

Shit. I knew he wasn't going to let it go.

"You've been avoiding the topic for 3 courses. I know you've already decided to stay. Just do it."

The problem with having a best friend is that they actually know you.

"Fine. I'll contact my US assistant after dinner."

"Yea!"

It's a good thing Ritsu doesn't want to kill me anymore.

Night, Shinobu's Guest Room, Tokyo Main:

"Damn, that feels good."

"Stop wiggling around."

"Mmmmm." Then his thumb found that spot. "Ouch!" I jerked my leg away.

But he gently pulled it back. "Calm down, Bu. Let me work that knot out."

"Go easy. Gotta watch the blood pressure."

His fingers slowly started to circle my calf trying to find that knot. I hissed when he got there. "Shhh. I'll start real slow." This time he gently pressed down. "Didn't realize it was so bad."

"Yeah, well, you try sitting still in awkward positions because of your hip and eye. Everything's a knot."

"I'll make sure the nurse that comes over is licensed for massage too."

"You're the best, Asshole."

"I know." His touch got a little harder. "Now hold still and breathe."

.

I finished her legs and needed a shower. No sex for a while. We can't even really make out. The things I want to make her feel would probably blow her eyes right out of her head.

I tried to be quiet, but…

"You better have been thinking about me."

"Duh." I slipped under the covers and spooned her from the back. "I love you, you crazy chick."

"I love you, too."

Not sure how many minutes later, but I thought she was asleep when she said, "Do I have to do the Sunday show? Is it really a good idea? I'm a yakuza heir, you know."

"Oh, I know. But the PR firm and your agent think it's a good idea, and you wouldn't want to let Haruhi do it on her own, would you?"

"That's low, Asshole." I didn't reply, just waited. "Yeah, OK. I'm going to fucking hate it, but OK."

"Relax. Have you ever heard an expert let anyone else say anything? Just sit there and let those guys do all the talking. You and Haruhi are just there to get people to watch."

"Good point."

.

I was just drifting off when his chest rumbled against my back. "I'm liking this not going to school. Think we can drop out? We're adults. We're married."

"There's no way. Can you even imagine the shit we'd get from our parents?"

"Yeah. Pops wants me to finish because he never did."

"Neither did my mom, and she's pissed enough at us already."

"Fine," he huffed. I bet if I rolled over, he'd be pouting.

"It's not going to kill us. Plus, if we quit, we wouldn't see our friends."

"That's going to stop after graduation."

"It would stop whether we dropped out or not." I reached back and gave his hair a tug. "Suck it up. It won't be that bad. I'll show you how I cheated on that biology test."

"You better."

.

This time she woke me up.

"We need to get our tattoos."

"Damn straight." I twisted so I could kiss her back. "Here, right?"

"Mmm. Middle of my back. I can show it or cover it that way."

"Koi for good luck and water for changing and life."

"We need to find someone to design them. It's gotta be unique."

"I'll find the best tattoo artist in Japan."

She was snoring softly in time with Kasa in less than five minutes.

Night, Haruhi's Patient Room, Tokyo Main:

That's not him.

My hearts beating so fast…

It can't be him.

Can't breathe…

It's just a dream.

Can't move…

He's in jail.

I forced a deep breath and held it. Blowing it out, I counted to ten then started over.

I slowly made my eyes open.

Relief hit like I was boneless. Just a dark corner.

I fumbled around, and the button clicked under my finger, and the room was instantly flooded with light. It's empty.

He's not here. He was never here. No guy. No knife.

I'm ok. I'm safe here.

Takashi's in the guest room. There are two guards on the door. There are at least a dozen on this floor and around the hospital. Ritsu's in Shinobu's guest room with his gun.

Nothing's going to happen.

But I'm still breathing fast. I can't slow my heart. It's pounding.

Remember what you learned, Haruhi.

In…

Out…

In…

Out…

It took over an hour before I could close my eyes again.

Author's request for help:

A couple chapters ago I asked for help with ideas for Akito and Yuki's arc, and I got some great ones. I've started plotting them and can't wait to write.

But I need some help with the twins. I missed their canon birthday (June 9), so I'm going to have them turn 18 in late October. I have some ideas that center on them having a wild and crazy birthday party, but need others. The ones I have feel too tropey (if that's a word) and want to do better by them. Let me know if you have any. Things I will definitely not do are a Hikaru relapse or a pregnancy scare.

Author's Note:

Started and ended with Haruhi having nightmares/fear issues. I want her to be strong coming out of this, but it's completely unrealistic for her to not have problems. In the last eight months she's been kidnapped twice, her father and two others have died, she went through a bombing and lots of social media controversy, there's still that parent's group and pervert out there, and she's a senior in high school. She's going to have problems.

I bet no one's surprised she's going to continue being the face of the line. Adding the two other models is something Dad and I have been talking about for a while. The kidnapping just made it the perfect time.

I'm not necessarily done with the Mori killing Daiju thing, but it won't go public, so don't worry about that cliché. There's not a lot left, but there is some.

Ritsu and Bu moving to someplace from the Chiba syndicate was an idea from a reader, but I can't find the review or PM right now. I want to say it was momstable. If so, thanks! If not, someone correct me and I'll give credit where it's due. Those two will have some work to do to get that place to their tastes. I see a personal assistant in the future for both of them.

And Kyoya's staying in Tokyo. I've been foreshadowing that pretty hard, so it shouldn't be a surprise. Re-integrating him into the group, however much makes sense, will be happening for the rest of the story.
