The Painful Truth - Chapter 19: Shiraishi Syndicate
.
Wednesday, October 5:
Morning, SUV headed to Ouran:
"You sure you're ready for this?"
I heaved a big sigh and chanted 'don't pull your gun' five times. "Yes, Asshole. For the thousandth time, I'm ready to go back to Ouran."
"You're still wearing your patch. Maybe the doc's wrong."
"Stop. Just stop." I reached out, grabbed his jaw, and pulled him closer, "If I don't leave that compound today, I'll lose it. Between you, Mother, and that crazy nurse who I'm convinced is trying to kill me, you all are making me fucking nuts."
"How is the nurse trying to kill you?"
"I don't know, Asshole," I let go of his face and flopped back in my seat. "Can you die from having to be calm and still?" Her face floated in front of my closed eyes, and I pictured breaking her nose. "It's either her or me unless I get out of there today."
"Shit, Bu. Didn't realize it was that bad." He wiped a hand down his face and smirked at me, "I'll send her back to my compound, and I'll keep you from doing stuff."
"Oh, hell no. It's taking all my control not to jump you when we're alone. The thought of her seeing us is what keeps me in check."
That got a snort. "Then we'll keep her, because I sure as shit don't want her walking in when you're jumping me."
He kissed me quick and sat back in his seat. I dropped my head on his shoulder. "When are we going to tell the group we're married? It's got to be before we move into the new place."
"You were going to ask Renge about designers today. How are you going to ask without telling them why?"
"Easy," I shrugged. "I'll just tell her it's for after we're married. She's redoing that mansion for her and Tamaki, so she'll get that."
He's quiet. Is he thinking?
"We still need to tell them soon."
"Saturday at the sleepover?"

Morning, SUV Headed for Nozuka Supotsu BOD Meeting:
We pulled up to the front of Takashi's office building, and I reached out and grabbed the handle.
The door won't open…
I'm yanking and yanking, and the door won't open…
Need out…
Trapped…
"Help!"
I'm pulling and pulling.
"Let me out!"
Then, the door opened, and I almost tumbled out.
"Haruhi-sama!"
.
It was a quick sweep. I sent a car ahead to secure the front and clear a path for us. Less than a minute after we stopped, I heard the back door handle being pulled. And pulled.
Is she trying to get out?
She shouldn't be. I walked her through the new protocol before we left this morning. I wasn't just going to start locking the doors on her.
Out of habit she might have forgotten, but it sounds like a trapped animal trying to get out.
"Help!..."
Oh, no.
"Let me out!..."
I yanked open the door and caught her before she hit the ground.
"Haruhi-sama!"
"I couldn't get out." Huge eyes met mine, and I cringed at the tears. "Trapped," she whispered.
I helped her to sit on the seat but kept the door wide open. Then, I knelt down in front of her. Wish there was a better place, a more private place, but I'm not putting her back in the car.
"You're safe, Haruhi-sama. You're not trapped. You're outside." I tried rubbing her upper arms. "Breathe. Can you hear the birds?" Good thing the offices are next to a small urban park. "Smell the air. You're outside."
It took several moments, but she finally started breathing normally.
Finally, she looked up at me, "I can't… I can't… You can't lock me in. I just can't…"
"Of course, Haruhi-sama. I won't lock you in again." I'm still rubbing her arms. She might be breathing better, but she's trembling like a leaf. "We'll think of something else. Don't worry."
And I've got just a few hours to come up with something.

Morning, Secure Room, Black Onion Squad Headquarters:
Ootori-sama came in, draining a cup of coffee. He'd requested moving the meeting to this morning, but I'm not sure he's actually awake yet.
He dropped his notebook on the table and slid into his chair. "Where are we on the women, Nishimori-san?"
"All but five have been identified. Everyone that has been has signed the contract, been paid, and, for those that wished, relocated." I lowered my voice, "No other children were found."
"Good." He wrote a '5' and circled it. "What's being done to find those remaining?"
"Without telling them who or why, I've had one of your techs run the pictures through several databases and a general search through the internet. Nothing so far."
"Shit." He looked over at Tachibana, "Time to get serious with those downstairs."
"Yes, Kyoya-sama."
He turned back to me, "I know the one that fled to Australia's been found. Where are we on the last one?"
"It's like he vanished into thin air, but we're looking."
Writing a '1' and circling it, he nodded, "Keep at it. He doesn't deserve to be a free man."
"No, Sir, he doesn't."
"Tachibana's been overseeing their interrogation, and I wanted him to update us both together." He gestured him into a seat, "Tachibana?"
.
Since I was not able to participate in the 'interrogation' of the man who stabbed Haruhi-sama, I perhaps enjoyed this more than I should.
"We have six in custody. The four that were still BOS employees, the one that was in Nagoya, and the one that fled to Australia. As of two days ago, all six have confessed to assisting Ootori Yoshio in either stocking the room, supervising the women cleaning the room, procuring women for the room, or various other things." I took a deep breath, "Five have confessed to using the women when Yoshio was finished."
"Oh, fuck…"
He's seen so much, but I forget he's nineteen. As much as I might want to, there's nothing I can do to protect him from this.
"And the sixth?"
"He's the anomaly, Kyoya-sama. He claims he was blackmailed into helping after he accidentally found out what was going on."
"Do you believe him?"
"One of the others corroborates his story. The others are keeping quiet on the topic."
"But do you believe him?"
He was the first to crack. He begged for his family's safety, still concerned even after Yoshio's been dead for over six months. Everything about his demeanor and speech patterns rang true.
"Yes, I do."
.
Now what?
I've got six men downstairs in cells.
I can't turn them over to the police. Everything will come out. The Ootori name will be ruined. The Conglomeration will be ruined.
I wish I could kill him all over again.
Maybe I don't have to decide this all on my own. "Recommendations?" I asked the two of them.
Tachibana was ready, as usual. "No police. I know you already know that." I nodded. "Ship them off to a country who will hold them in prison with no questions. Wash your hands of them."
"How can we guarantee they won't talk? Even in the deepest pit of some shithole country, someone might hear and want to find out more."
"Leave that to me." I'm not sure I want to know what he's going to do. Whatever it is, they deserve it.
"And the one that was blackmailed?"
Nishimori-san cleared his throat, "Is it possible to let them go?"
I leaned back and crossed my arms in front of my chest. Can I really sentence someone to death when they were only trying to save their family? But what about the women and their families?

Morning, Board Room, Nozuka Supotsu:
"All ten new stores will be open before the new year." The slide changed. "Five in Tokyo, two in Nagoya, three in Fukuoka, and four in Kumamoto."
I'd read the report already, so I let my attention slip from my CEO and focused on Haruhi.
Nagata-san told me what happened when they arrived. Even with telling her he was locking the doors, she panicked. We're idiots. Of course, she'd panic about being trapped. She was just held and tied to a chair for days. It's no wonder she forgot all about his warning as soon as she tried the handle.
She's been quiet so far. Not speaking at all. I hope that will change when we get to the donation part of the agenda.
The rest of the board keeps glancing at her. What are they expecting? For her to suddenly go crazy? Or is it having someone infamous in our midst? I'm not sure she'd noticed the looks she's getting. Or maybe she's used to it.
"Online sales have increased twenty-one percent compared to this time last year. Kendo equipment accounts for three percent of that."
One of the members looked over at me and asked, "Will you continue to sponsor the karate and kendo teams?"
"Yes."
"Will you continue to compete?"
Will I? I haven't even thought about it since the kidnapping.
"I am unsure at this time." Haruhi's head jerked up, and she stared at me. Guess she is paying attention. "University starts in a couple of weeks, and I must focus on my studies."
I saw her write herself a note. She'll probably ask me about it later. I hope she doesn't feel like I'm not competing because of her. Even if I might be.

Morning, Tokyo Metropolitan Police Station:
"Not only did you violate an NDA, you broke several privacy laws." I stared at my client over my reading glasses. "You were caught red-handed with texts proving you leaked private, protected information about two patients. And you sold that information to the press."
Her knuckles gripped the table so tightly, they were white. All her fingernails were chewed to the quick.
"You're a nurse. You've had training in how to handle patient information. There's no way you can pretend you didn't know what you were doing."
A huge shudder ran through her, and she held back a sob.
"And these weren't just any patients. They were both personal friends of Ootori Kyoya, the owner of the hospital. But not just his friends. They're friends of the Suoh's, Hitachiin's, Haninozuka's, Kasanoda's, and Houshakuji's. One's the ward of the Morinozuka's. The other a yakuza hero who brought down a trafficking ring."
I haven't raised my voice. I'm just giving her the facts.
"Basically, you're screwed."
Her breaths quickened and tears started to land on the table around her handcuffed hands.
"Fifteen years. The conviction is guaranteed. You might as well plead guilty and hope for leniency," I shook my head, "which you won't get."
She drew in a long breath and let out a sob.
"Your only hope is that you didn't act alone."
I waited for her to collect herself and say something. It took almost three minutes.
"A few of us talked about how much the press might pay, but," she sniffed hard, "I did it on my own."
"Then there's nothing I can do. Ootori Kyoya and Tokyo main will take every yen you have in penalties for violating the NDA, and you'll be sentenced to fifteen years."
She slowly lowered her head to rest on her hands and sobbed.

Morning, Secure Room, Black Onion Squad Headquarters:
"I'm not sure I can give him his freedom. He still participated. He still actively ruined those women's lives." Ootori-sama's long fingers were tracing the rim of his empty coffee cup. "And he could still expose everything that happened."
"But he is a victim, too, isn't he?"
"Well, shit." He stood up fast, and his chair rolled back and hit the wall behind him. Then he started pacing.
He did two full circuits of the room before Tachibana spoke up. "We relocate him and his family to one of the southern islands, perhaps Yakushima. He can guard a clinic there. That way we can keep an eye on him, and he knows we'll know if he talks."
Ootori-sama stopped and stared at the far wall for a beat. "That could work." He pulled the chair back and sat. "Write up a contract that says what it needs to without giving anything away. I want him relocated before we do anything with the rest of them."
"Yes, Ootori-sama." I'll start that contract as soon as this meeting's over.
"And," he leaned back and rubbed his temples, "unless there is new news, I don't want to talk about this anymore."
I wonder if he's looking for a therapist. I've only met with mine once, but it's already helped.

Lunch, Dining Hall, Ouran:
"You sit, and I'll get your lunch."
"I can carry a tray, Ritsu. It's not that heavy."
"Yeah, but," he ran his hand through his hair and held the back of his neck, "you shouldn't have to."
How cute. He's trying to be sweet. "Fine. Get me something traditional."
"You got it."
I sat down and took a deep breath. I'll never admit it, but I might be more tired than I thought I'd be.
"How are you feeling, Shinobu?"
I feel like I'm really fucking sick of that fucking question.
"OK, Satoshi. It's weird being back."
"Well, just let any of us know if you need anything."
"Sure."
Everyone's looking at me.
.
It's a good thing Haruhi's not here to hear what everyone's saying…
"Can you believe they were stalking her at the cemetery?"
"Commoners have no manners."
"And the press? How horrible."
Our statement went out this morning. It probably won't do much good for the fangirls, but the press better take notice if they ever want to interview any of us again.
"Hey, Renge?"
I pulled my head out of the clouds and turned to Shinobu, "Hmm?"
"Who's your decorator?"
"For Suoh mansion #2?" She nodded, and I told her about the firm Yuzuru-san hired. "They cover everything from the architect, to the designer, to the decorator. Why?"
"Chiba Dai handed over his syndicate to me because of what his dickhead son did. Ritsu and I are thinking about living at that compound after we're married, and Dai had shitty taste. The whole thing needs to be redone."
"How exciting!" An entire compound to redo. "But what's on the compound? How big? The firm we're using is in high demand, and I'm not sure they'd be able to get it all done well before the summer."
"I could give you the name of the firm remodeling the Ootori mansion, but I have no idea if they're taking on new clients."
That's right. I forgot Yuki and Akito are having a wing done for them.
"Whatever names you can give me will get me started. No matter what, they'll have to work with Ritsu and Gurinraifu. We'll want it as green as possible."
"I'll text you their contact info."

Afternoon, Board Room, Nozuka Supotsu:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for your insight today. I look forward to seeing you at our next Board of Directors meeting."
As we all disbursed after a long meeting, Takashi asked if I was alright. I think both Shinobu and I are sick of that question. I remember hearing it all the time right after Dad died, and now I'm hearing it again.
Does everyone really expect me to be alright after what happened?
But now is not the time to give a truthful answer, so I nodded.
"Do you want me to ride with you to the check presentation?"
"No," I snapped out too fast. I cleared my throat and tried again. "No, thanks. I'll see you there." I need to get out of here. The walls are closing in.
I headed for the elevator and stood staring at it as the doors opened then closed.
"Haruhi?"
"I'll take the stairs," and I bolted.
.
I followed Haruhi-sama down the stairs, close enough so she'd realize it was me and not someone chasing her. Nagata-san assigned me to cover her while she's in the building mainly to make sure none of the staff tried to approach her and talk about what happened. So far, quiet.
When we came out on the ground floor, Takashi-sama was waiting. Fast elevator. I'm sure he wanted to say something but held back. Sometimes you just have to let the fear run its course.
She told him again, "I'll see you at Lighthouse," then headed for the main door. I'd already texted Nagata-san to have the car ready.
.
I stopped dead in front of the building.
The SUV.
I have to get back in the SUV.
"Haruhi-sama?" I turned to Nagata. "Ebisu will be riding in the back with you for now. When we arrive at our destination, he'll wait with you while the sweep's being done and then help you out. We won't lock you in."
Ebisu gave me an encouraging smile and nod. It was comforting to have him around today and even follow me down the stairs. "Thank you, Ebisu."
"You're welcome, Haruhi-sama. And if this doesn't work, we'll come up with something else."
"Like a sticky-note on the door that says 'wait' or 'no'?"
That got a smile from both of them, though they were strained. They know I'm trying to make light of the panic attack this morning.
"Let's just try this for now."
I stood at the door, took a deep breath, and climbed in, Ebisu climbing in behind me.

After Classes, Lighthouse Offices:
Satoshi, Haruhi, the twins, Renge, Tamaki, Yuki, Akito, Cho, the alien, Takashi…
We're waiting on our yakuza couple.
Since the On Okuri offices are tucked away in the Nozuka Supotsu building, we decided to hold the check presentations for both Lighthouse and Kakurega at the Lighthouse offices. With as much money as we collected from the ball and all the interest generated, we might need to look for new offices. Something on our own. Something more befitting the status we seemed to gather overnight. We'll all have to make another donation to cover administrative costs.
I wonder if there's something in the Haninozuka real estate holdings?
"Haninozuka-sama?" I nodded to acknowledge the Lighthouse executive director. We'd all decided to stick with last names for all On Okuri dealings. It focuses on our elite status and hopefully will help distance us from our ages. "The press is ready when we are."
That's when my phone chimed, notifying me Ritsu and Shinobu were here. "Our last two have arrived. Let's gather everyone."
.
Not only did I gain a fiancée, but she brought me into her group of friends, and I became a board member of the hottest new charity in Japan. Even if I'm at least eight years older than the next oldest.
And the age difference is obvious when I look at what everyone chose to wear. I, of course, am in a suit. With this conservative cut, I probably look like I'm in my forties. Standing next to me, Yuki-chan definitely looks almost eighteen. The skirt of her suit barely made it to mid-thigh, and the shirt under the jacket bared her midriff. I feel like a cradle-robber. At least Mori's wearing one almost as conservative, but he is coming from a board meeting. While they don't clearly match, Haruhi's dressed to complement his level of professionalism. The only girl in slacks, her suit is a dark red with black plaid and black shirt. Other than simple gold studs and a watch, I don't see any jewelry.
Chika's doesn't look as bad, but I think that's simply because of his age. It's almost black, but the emerald green shirt does spice it up a bit.
Tamaki and Renge look like a Hollywood 'It' couple stepping off a red carpet. Or onto the White House lawn. She's wearing a cream and navy tweed miniskirt and short jacket with a navy silk shirt. With a string of pearls, she could be a young Jackie O. Tamaki's suit's cut to match her vintage style. Definitely Japan's Golden Couple.
Cho's wearing a bouncy, pink dress. Honey's dressed to match in a gray suit with pink shirt and tie. Their understated (for them) jewelry matches. Pink diamonds on her ears, neck, and wrist and a tie-stud and cufflinks for him.
The twins are as fashion-forward as usual wearing dark gray slacks and shirts and vests in orange and pale blue, one with the shirt orange and the vest blue, and the other vice versa. Satoshi must have gotten advice from them, because he came in black slacks and a purple silk shirt with no tie. His sleeves are rolled up, and he looks much more relaxed than most of us.
But no one is going to miss our yakuza couple. Both in leather, his suit is cut casual and done in dark gray. She's wearing a black miniskirt and vest with no shirt, but it's her jewelry that stands out. Since I've known her, she's always worn that ruby, but it really stands out now with her short hair. It's huge. And the dragon arm band that Yuki-chan told me is a sword when you pull it out. Plus huge solitaires in her ears, that ruby dragon over the pearls on her engagement ring, and those sunglasses. And I know he gave them all to her.
I looked back at Yuki-chan and the gold necklace she's wearing. Clearly, I've got to up my jewelry game. I can't believe I don't know what her favorite gemstone is.
.
We need to get this going. My head is fucking killing me.
"You got this," Ritsu mumbled and squeezed my hand. Wish he was squeezing my ass.
I glanced over at the Lighthouse executive director and tried hard not to give her a shit-eating grin. Guess my money is good enough for you after all.
Stepping up to the podium, I got a nod of encouragement from Haruhi, took a deep breath, and started my speech.
.
There are advantages to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't have to give the speech, Shinobu does.
I stood proud behind her with the rest of the group, Takashi by my side, his hand in mine, and watched the press as she spoke. Certain phrases struck me…
"…these girls and women will need help for a long time in order to find a new normal…"
"…while we saved so many, we're only scratching the surface…"
"…this money is needed, but it is not enough…"
"…human trafficking is an ongoing problem here in Japan and around the world…"
"…don't ever forget the ones still out there…"
Flashes went off and the crowd applauded as she handed over checks to both Lighthouse and Kakurega with huge numbers. Numbers I'd never considered achieving when I started that commoner challenge.
She did great.
We all did great.

Late Afternoon, Mori/Honey Apartment:
I can't believe I failed that chemistry quiz.
But what am I ever going to use it for? I don't need to know molarity or how to titrate anything for the apartment business or to run a dojo.
Waste of time.
"Earth to Satoshi," Karou's snapping his fingers in front of my face, "you in there?"
"Yeah."
"Well, hurry up and change. I'm hungry."
"Right behind you."
The twins and Chika left the guest room, and I realized I'm the last one here. Zipping up my jeans, I grabbed a t-shirt and headed for the dining room. I wish Haruhi was cooking for us, but not with that hand.
.
"Too bad Ritsu and Shinobu decided not to come, but she did look tired." I held the sushi platter for Haruhi so she could choose.
"I think it's smart of her. She's got to be careful and not backslide in her recovery." She set the tongs back and smiled, "Thanks, Karou."
"No problem."
The check presentations lasted longer than we planned, so we decided to go ahead and eat as soon as we arrived. We'll study after.
"She did a great job on her speech," Renge chose some salmon and put it on her plate. "Better than I thought she'd do."
"Meow…" I kicked Hika under the table.
"No, it's just she's not used to doing anything like that."
"Whatever." He's bored and just wants some drama.
"Well," Chika cleared his throat, "we'll need to have a full On Okuri board meeting soon. All the new applicants have been vetted, and those that made it through the background checks need to be approved by us for funds. A long-term strategic plan is imperative now that we've exploded onto the scene. I also think we should consider new offices. Something more public facing and conducive to things like small fundraising events and check presentations."
"If we're not a voting member, can we skip that?"
Chika glared at both of us, "Just because neither of you are voting members, Hikaru, doesn't mean your input isn't needed. You both bring experiences none of the rest of us has."
"He's right, Hika," I nudged him under the table. "It won't be that bad."
"When?" Haruhi'd already pulled up her calendar.
"I'll send an invite, but I want to have it before Todi starts."
We kicked around dates for a few minutes and settled on the Saturday before.
.
Haruhi's hardly said anything since we got here. Did something happen? She probably doesn't know about the press release.
"Haruhi," she cocked her head, "After the incident at the cemetery, I had my PR department draft a statement condemning the press for lying in wait and for the fans stalking you there. All of our PR offices released it this morning."
"What? Why? Why would you do that?"
Here's where her naivete still shows. "Because if the Suoh's, Haninozuka's, Morinozuka's, Ootori's, Hitachiin's, Kasanoda's, Himura's, and Houshakuji's all release a statement pointing out how horrible the reporters were acting and reminding everyone that you are our friend, the press will remember that we can make or break them."
"Renge…"
"No," I held up a hand to stop her, "it had to be done. You're our friend, and we'll protect you. Besides," I flipped my hair over my shoulder, "it needed to be done no matter who was treated that way. It's just rude to stalk someone in a cemetery."
Everyone's eyes had been following the conversation, but we all focused on Haruhi when the first snort happened. Then another. Then she was laughing. "Rude…" More giggles. "What a way to put it."
"Well, it is rude."
"I'm not disagreeing," she wheezed out. "I was thinking more like horrible…ghoulish…"
"Shitty," Karou threw in.
"Revolting."
"Fucked up." Leave it to Hikaru since Ritsu isn't here.
"And just plain mean," Yuki finished.
.
Hearing her laugh again makes me gooey.
Unfortunately, the mood was broken by Tamaki. "Kyoya's going back to Stanford to tie things up. I was hoping to go with him, but I can't get away from the gallery."
Everyone stopped laughing and those that know what happened between Ootori and Haruhi, all stared at him. Tamaki can be completely tone deaf to a situation.
"Oooo," Cho bounced in her seat, "do you know when he's going? I could go visit Keiko." She reached for Mitsukuni's hand, "You could come too, Honey-kun."
"I'd love to, Cho-chan, but wouldn't you enjoy some girl time alone? Besides," he frowned, "I need as much time with the bakeries as I can get before the semester starts."
"Oh, alright." She wasn't disappointed for long. Even though Keiko was just here for the ball, they are best friends. "I'll just text Kyoya and get the details."
.
Haru-chan and Cho-chan did such a good job decorating our apartment. There's even enough tables for everyone in the library, but only Takashi, the girls, and me have our own desks.
"In conclusion…"
Chika-chan cleared his throat and tried again, "In conclusion…"
"At least it's not just me," Haru-chan mumbled.
"No, it's not. There's something off with the dictation software. Probably best if you take it back to Morinozuka IT when you get back home."
She sighed heavily and sat down in the seat Chika-chan got up from, "Alright. At this point, it's probably easier to just type it anyway, even if I'm just using one finger from my right hand."
It got quiet for a while, with just keyboard tapping filling the room.
I have a bunch of new toy designs for Bun Bun's to approve. Those gachapon machines sell out so fast. The temporary tattoos were such a hit.
Oooo! I just remembered! I have to tell them. "I grew another two centimeters!"
"That's terrific, Honey-senpai."
"No more senpai, Haru-chan, please."
"Sorry."
"You're going to…"
"…need a whole new…"
"…wardrobe soon."
"My tailor's working on it right now. They've been putting in extra at the bottom to make my pants longer as I grow."
"Well, when you want to go on a shopping spree…"
"…we're your guys!"
"You bet, Hika-chan, Kao-chan!"
.
And all because I started making him eat his vegetables. I hope that nutrition class I'm taking helps me help him make even better decisions. I needed a health elective. I want him to live a long life with me, our children, our grandchildren, our great-grandchildren…
"How about we all go out to Ranka's next week for dinner?"
"Great idea, Renge-chan," Tamaki leaned over and quickly kissed her lips.
"How about Thursday?"
"That works."
"I'm not sure I can go…"
"But, Haruhi," Renge started.
"I don't want another incident like the cemetery or the bookstore."
Several of us jumped when Mori quickly stood, "I will not allow that to happen. Not to you. Not at my club."
I watched different emotions cross her face. Surprise. That he'd say that or that he'd be so forceful? Apprehension. She started worrying her lip with her teeth.
"You'll be safe. I promise."
Not sure anyone else could see it, but from my angle I can see her hands in her lap. She's picking at the bandages.
I can't even imagine how she feels after everything she's been through.
"Haruhi," she looked back up into his eyes, "I promise."
"Takashi's right," Satoshi smiled at her, but it was a hesitant smile, meant to reassure, "we'll all be there."
They looked into each other's eyes, his reassuring, hers begging for that reassurance.
Finally, she blew out a breath and nodded. "Alright. It will be good to see the ladies in a show."
Mori sat and his face broke into one of the biggest smiles I've ever seen from him, which isn't that big, but still…
"I'll make the reservations and handle the security."
"And I'll text Ritsu and Shinobu and let them know." Renge's thumbs were already flying.
.
It will be ok.
Takashi will be there.
Honey, Satoshi, and Chika will be there.
Nagata will be there.
I can always leave if it gets crazy.
I looked across the desk at Takashi, and he smiled again. "I'll be there for you, Haruhi. It will be fine."
I smiled back and nodded. He'll keep me safe. He always has.
"Ouch."
Nuts. I ripped the bandage and pulled the stiches again.

Thursday, October 6:
Morning, Shinobu's Rooms, Himura Compound:
"Your blood pressure is fine, and your retina's healing like I'd hoped." I folded my scope and slipped it back into my bag. "You're cleared to keep going back to school."
"Yes," she practically fist pumped.
"But," I paused until she looked at me, "another week without any cardio, no lifting anything heavy, and plenty of rest including just shutting your eyes and resting them for short periods throughout the day."
She nodded, and Kasanoda-sama assured me he'd keep her in line.
"Whatever you say, Asshole."
"Hush, you crazy chick. You know you need to rest."
"Yeah," she signed and looked back at me. "Anything else?"
"We'll have another appointment late next week at Tokyo Main. We'll run a few scans to be sure you're all healed."
"And then cardio?" Her eyes darted over at her husband, and he blushed a bit.
"If everything's all set."
"Fuckin' A."
.
"Stop pouting. It's only a few more days."
"Nine, Bu. Nine days."
"But who's counting?"
"I am." He helped me into the car and climbed in after. "And I know you are too."

After classes, Petto Chinmi:
"I'm so sorry that happened to you at the cemetery, Fujioka-sama." When I saw the tweets, I was shocked. People have no shame.
"Thanks."
"The Houshakuji PR team sent over the release when they sent it out to the press. Do you want Petto Chinmi to send one out as well?"
"No." She leaned back in her chair and sighed, "I don't want to dignify it. I want to distance Petto Chinmi and what happened as much as possible. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were after Shinobu. We have no comment on the kidnapping or anything else that happened except that human trafficking is a tragedy and must be stopped."
I anticipated that answer. That's why I don't have a draft ready to go.
"Let's just focus on our agenda. I need to leave on time for my physical therapy."
She studied the paper in front of her. "First item, Korean lawsuit."
"The first trial starts November 2," Sato-san said, looking up from his laptop. "We already decided I'd go for the entire trial. Will you attend?"
.
Will I?
I should. Even with school, I should at least be there for the opening arguments and the verdict if I can get back there in time. It's my company.
What about security? What about Takashi?
Will they even let me go?
Let me go…
LET me go…
Oh, hell no. I say if I'm going or not, and it's their job to make it safe.
It's a court room in Seoul, not some sketchy part of town or yakuza hangout.
"Yes, I will." I will.
I doublechecked my calendar. "The second is a Wednesday. You and I will take a shuttle on Tuesday after classes, and I'll come back Wednesday evening. That should give us enough time to meet with our lawyers there if we need to."
"Would you like me to attend as well?" Tanaki-san asked.
Does it show we're serious having the three of us there, or does it show I need a chaperone with two older men there? I think having a dozen security guards shows that, so what's best for Petto Chinmi?
"I'm not sure. What do you think?"
"Well, there's no reason for me to attend the entire thing. Who knows how long it will last. So, we're only talking about me going with you. It does show a united front unless you're worried about me seeming like a chaperone."
I gave him a half smile, "That's exactly what I'm concerned about."
"Then I suggest you go on your own. Sato-san will be there to handle any legal issues that come up, and I'm sure you'll have security with you, so you won't be on your own."
I turned that over a few times.
"No…I think the more people we have there, the more serious the manufacturers will take us, regardless of whether you look like a chaperone or not."
"Very well. Do you want to take anyone else?"
I looked around the table. Who would I want to have with and why?
"Imai-san, do you have a passport?"
.
Me?
Fujioka-sama wants to bring me to Seoul?
"Yes, I do."
"Perfect. If you're able to be away overnight, I'd like you to come. You can arrange the travel and hotel and help represent us in the courtroom.
"I'd be honored."

Late Evening, Koi Pond, Morinozuka Estate:
"How was physical therapy?"
"EEeep!" She jumped and Koko hissed and ran off. The white one stayed and glared at me.
"Chika," her hands went to her cheeks, and I noticed her bandage needed to be redone again.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. I thought you heard me come in."
She took several slow, deep breaths and forced her shoulders to relax. "It's alright. Maybe they should put a bell on the door."
They. Not we. Not I. They. Like she's still a guest.
"May I sit?"
"Sure," she gestured to the other end of the sofa. The white cat was in the middle.
"Have you named her yet?"
She reached out and scratched her behind the ear. "I was thinking of either Kippei or Nodoka."
"Flowers?"
"Peace and Calm."
"I like Nodoka better."
"Then, Nodoka it is."
.
Chika was quiet long enough for Koko to wander back in and claim his lap.
I was just about to ask if he needed anything when he asked again, "How was physical therapy?"
"Fine. My hand's sore, but it's to be expected." I switched to Nodoka's belly. "It gets tired faster than I thought it would."
"Not surprised. It was a bad injury, even if it looks small from the outside."
"Yeah, I guess that's why I thought it'd be healing faster."
Now both cats are purring.
"I spoke with Nagata."
"He told you about yesterday morning?"
"Yes. And the solution you worked out."
"And?" I know he wants to say more. I'm so tired of all this.
"Don't get mad, but maybe it's time to stop fighting the last bits of 'rich bastard' living you haven't come to terms with yet."
"Chika…"
"I'm sorry, Haruhi, but I'm serious. You can't keep fighting. Your life has changed and trying to hang on to a few things that the rest of us don't do, like opening our own car doors, just so you can feel a little less like one of us needs to stop."
I think he's trying to project earnestness, but the smile was bitter, and he broke eye contact. His usually bright personality gone and now just a sense of resignation. He's disappointed. Disappointed in me.
"Chika…"
"I know you want independence, control. But you can't have them like you used to. Your life has completely changed. You're still Haruhi. You just need to come to terms with all this."
"I thought I had."
"You're close." He shooed Koko off his lap and scooted close to me. Nodoka fled after Koko. "It's coming in stages, and this is a new one."
"I hate this…"
"I know." His arm came around my shoulders, and I leaned against him. "You can be in control. You can be independent. You have to take the new situations into account."
"How?"
He squeezed my shoulders, "Here's the hard part. Ready?"
"I guess."
"Accept." He paused a beat and continued, "Accept your new life. Accept that it's permanent. Accept that this is your new home. Accept that you need security, not that we all think you need it, but that you actually do. Once you accept all that, you can learn to work within your new normal. You can take control and plan for things rather than reacting."
Accept? I thought I had.
"Live within the security restrictions. No, you can't just walk off the estate and down to the convenience store, but that doesn't mean you can never go there."
He turned, and I felt his cheek on the top of my head, his breath in my hair. "We all struggle when you get hurt. It hurts us. Especially when we know that acceptance and planning could have prevented it."
"But…"
"I don't mean the pet store. That was a security issue. You had no part in that. I'm talking about the cemetery. Plan your trips. Let security do their job. And wait for them to clear the area." I felt his thumb start to rub my arm. "You understand what I'm saying, don't you?"
Do I?
If I hadn't decided on the spur of the moment…
If I hadn't opened my own door…
I slumped heavier against him. "Yes, I do."
"Think of it this way. If Satoshi had jumped out of his limo and been surrounded by crazy kendo fans yelling for autographs, hugs, and photos, wouldn't you have thought that he should have stayed in the limo until security was ready?"
Shit.
"Yes."
"Well, there you go."
.
I stopped talking and let her think about it.
A paradigm shift is a huge thing, and I'm sure it won't all happen at once. But I meant it, she's close.

Evening, Hitachiin Studios:
"It's not working."
"We could try the putty."
"And spend all that time blending?"
"They can just fix it in post."
"That might be best."
Karou opened the makeup room door, "What's taking so long?"
"We're having trouble covering the scar and keeping it looking as natural as we usually do."
Great. I really didn't think it would be this much trouble.
Now I've got three makeup people and Karou staring at my face, and they're too close.
Deep breaths.
"Finish the eyes. We'll deal with the scar in post-production."
"Kaoru?"
"It's alright, Haruhi. We fix stuff there all the time. Wrinkles, pimples, pores, everything. Don't worry about it."
"Fine." I'll try not to. It's not like I can do anything about it.
.
"She's a natural, Yuzuha-san."
"Yes, she is."
"Any chance we can break that exclusivity in her contract?"
I glanced at her agent out of the corner of my eye. He's playing with his pen, trying to look casual. I don't know what kind of billing he negotiated, but he needs to get to know his client better.
"Even if we could, she'd never model for anyone else but Every Woman and Petto Chinmi."
"With that face and her high media profile, she could make a fortune."
This time, I turned my chair to face him. "How much time have you spent with Haruhi-chan?" He hesitated and I kept going, "How much time talking with her? Getting to know her and what she wants from life and her career?"
"Some." Even that sounds like an exaggeration.
"Not enough. Either she told you and you didn't believe her, or you didn't listen, but she's only modeling for Kaoru because of their friendship and his charity tie-ins and donations. She's only modeling for Petto Chinmi to save money on a spokesperson and because she was already becoming known. That girl," I gestured with my head, "has no interest in being a model, being famous, or being known. She just fell into it."
"Pity."
"The wasted potential…I agree. But once you get to know her, you know she'd hate every second of it."
.
"What's with the big fan?"
"For the second and third outfits, we decided to go with a green-screen and add everything in post. But we need the wind to move your hair and scarf."
"Oh."
"Now just walk slowly towards us…"
.
Haruhi came out in her third suit, but the photographers were still redoing the lighting, so I waved her over to where Mom and I were standing. Although, let's be honest, she was going to come over here anyway. We're standing at the food table.
"How's your hand, Haruhi-chan?"
She lifted it and made a fist. "It's doing alright. I'm glad the stitches are out."
Even though they came out this afternoon, we've been avoiding that hand. Haven't been asking her to hold anything and trying to keep it out of the shot entirely.
"The physical therapist says I should be able to start writing again in a week, but it gets tired so quickly."
"Well, don't push yourself. I'm sure my boys are helping you take notes."
She looked confused when both Haruhi and I snorted.
"Have you ever tried to read Hikaru's writing, Yuzuha-san?" Mom shook her head. "It's almost illegible."
"What about Kaoru?" she asked, pointing at me.
I just smirked and shook my head. "My notes suck, Mom. Haruhi's been recording the lectures on her laptop."
"Oh." Then she looked Haruhi up and down and changed the subject. "How are you and Mori-kun doing?"
Her face flamed. "Mom, don't make her blush. We don't want to have to fix everything in post." That just made her face redder.
"We're fine."
"He's a wonderful man. I'm happy for you both."
It's going to take forever for that blush to fade.

Evening, Tokyo Ramen Festa, Komazawa Park:
"I don't think I've ever been to this part of Tokyo before."
"I couldn't resist when I heard there'd be dozens of different ramen street vendors here. What better way to sample all the varieties and find a favorite?"
Tamaki-kun looked around, his eyes huge. "We should have brought Father and Maman. She hasn't gotten to experience all the commoner things we have."
If we hadn't been in public, I would have smacked him on the head. "You really need to watch out and not use that word. Haruhi's still having such a hard time assimilating into our world, and every time you bring that up, you just remind her of what she's lost when her father died."
"But…"
"No," I put my finger over his lips. "No 'buts'. It hurts her. That should be enough for you to stop."
I watched him take a deep breath and consider what I said. "You're right. It's a habit I need to break."
"And she'll thank you for it."

Evening, Planetarium Bar, Tokyo:
"Are they closed?"
"No. Hold my hand."
I led Yuki-chan down the hallway and into the main area of the bar.
"It's beautiful."
You're beautiful. The way the projected starlight shines in your eyes.
Damn…I'm such a sap.
The Ootori name got us a private booth with an unobstructed view of the stars. It also got us seated without having to prove her age, although her BOS provided fake ID would have worked just fine.
I ordered sake for me and a lemon chuhai [lemon sour] for her. She'd read about it in a short story and wanted to give it a try.
"How's your internship going?"
I leaned back and put my arm around her. "Harder than I thought." Not sure I want to describe the young man we had to commit today. He went off his meds and it got ugly. "But I'm learning a lot."
.
He pinched the bridge of his nose then rubbed his eyes.
Just how bad is it?
Does he want to talk about it?
Does he want to talk about it with me?
"I'm here if you'd like to talk about it."
He turned to me, and I saw a clearly fake smile. "Thanks, but no. I don't go back until Monday, so I don't want to think about it until then."
"Alright."
The drinks came and I tried mine. "Yum." Tangy, but still sweet.
He drank all of his.

Evening, Purikura no Mecca, Shibuya:
"This one next, Honey-kun," Cho-sama grabbed his hand and pulled him towards a booth covered in hearts. "It's new!"
It might be new, but it doesn't look that different from the dozens of others here.
Before I could signal, one of her team was already ahead of them to give the booth a quick check. After everything that's happened, we're not taking any chances. If primaries can be kidnapped from a pet store, they can be kidnapped from here too.
Especially here.
There are dozens of booths, all with costume rentals and editing capabilities after the pictures.
"I think by now they've had their picture taken in every booth here."
I nodded, agreeing with Cho-sama's detail head, Yamada.

Evening, Planetarium Bar, Tokyo:
"How are your classes?"
"It's strange," I looked up from studying the menu. It's so dark in here, we have to use a small electric candle. "After going through everything with Haruhi and Shinobu, being extracted from that park and taken to the Morinozuka's, not knowing what was going on, nothing seems real anymore. School just doesn't seem important after being that scared."
"I know what you mean." His fingers started stroking my arm. "It's hard to get back to reality."
"Exactly."
"That's why I wanted to bring you out on a date tonight. Something normal."
I looked around but couldn't really see anyone else in the place. Tani-san told me he'd be nearby using infrared glasses so he could see everything.
Not very normal.
"Anything sound good?"
"Not really." It's all appetizers. Not really a meal.
"Me either." He tossed some cash on the table. "Let's go find a real dinner."
"Yes, please."

Evening, Tokyo Ramen Festa, Komazawa Park:
"One more." I squeezed her hand. "Please."
"Alright," she laughed and tossed her hair, "one more."
We found a table and tasted. "This is the spiciest so far. Too bad Kyoya isn't here."
"Tamaki-kun, I know he's your best man, and I know he's being slowly…forgiven isn't the right word, but you know what I mean…but I'd rather not talk about him."
"I'm sorry, Renge-chan. It just popped out. I've never seen anyone eat spicy food like he does."
"It's alright, but let's change the subject."
"To what?"
"How about tomorrow night?"
"Wonderful!" I pulled out my phone and looked at the list. "Your assistant took care of the bedding, right?"
"Yes. It's already delivered."
"We already went to the 100 yen store for candy and fun things."
"I know they'll love the sleep masks and socks we got them."
"And the toys." She didn't try very hard to talk me out of them.
"Yes, and the toys."
"Did you tell everyone about the things for Haruhi?"
"Yes. They all loved the suggestion and will bring their surprise with them."
"Then we just have to get ours."
"They didn't have what we wanted there, so let's find a toy store."
"I know just the place. It's where Honey and Cho got those big stuffed things."
We were almost to the limo when Renge called out, "Yuki!"
"Renge! Tamaki!" Yuki waved us over, "Come join us." They both had bowls and were slurping ramen at one of the many tables set up for the festival. "Didn't know you were going to be here."
"Tamaki-kun insisted. But I thought you were going to that bar."
"We were there but didn't care for the menu."
"Well, you'll love the food here. We must have tried a dozen different ones."
"Oh, so you were leaving?"
"Yes," Renge-chan smiled, "and headed for a toy store to get Haruhi's surprise for tomorrow."
"You should join us!"

Evening, Chika's Room, Haninozuka Estate:
Boring.
I lived over at Satoshi's for the last eight months and could almost always find someone to talk to or do something with.
But now I'm back home and the alien's moved out.
Satoshi's at Neon, Haruhi's at Hitachiin studios, Takashi's at his apartment, and the alien's out with Cho-senpai.
Cho.
Better get used to that. Looks like she might be my sister in a couple years.
Guess I'll finish this report for Lightning Investments and go to the gym.

Evening, Shinobu's Rooms, Himura Estate:
"Shiraishi."
"What?"
"Shiraishi Syndicate." Bu stuffed her hands into the pocket of my hoodie she's wearing. "What do you think?"
"White stone?"
"Yeah, as in 'hard as stone'."
"Works for me, Bu."
"Then Shiraishi Syndicate it is." She leaned back and sighed, "Now to reorganize, rebuild, remodel, and establish it as a force to be reckoned with." Her hands came up and scrubbed her short hair, "All while trying to heal, graduate, and setup a new place to live with my new husband."
"You need a second."
"Yeah, but who? Tamura-san's too new. He knows the syndicate, but I don't know him. I don't trust him. Not yet."
"Anyone in the Himura Syndicate that's loyal and smart, but stuck in their position?"
"Stuck?"
"Yeah, can't be promoted because there just isn't a place to move up to? There must be someone."
"I can think of a couple." She gave me a quick kiss…damn I can't wait for her eye to get better. "Thanks. Now I just have to convince Dad to let one of them go."

Late Evening, Hitachiin Studios:
We don't usually help the models take their makeup off, but Hitachiin-sama wanted us to show Fujioka-sama some of our recommended products.
"I don't know what you're so upset about, Karou. This bottle actually says 'soap' on it."
"Yes, but at 50,000 yen [~$500] a bottle, I guarantee you've never bought it."
"Fifty? Thousand?"
"Yes." She poured a drop in her hands. "Haruhi, use at least five times that amount. You'll never get it all off if you just use a drop."
I showed her how to use the soap with the makeup wipes. She really has amazing skin.
"The show's next Friday," Hitachiin-san smiled at her. "I'll escort you on the red carpet, and you'll sit with Mom and Hika, just like always."
"Not Takashi?"
"No. He can escort you to the afterparty, but as the face of the line, I need to escort you to the show."
"Alright."
"We'll need to schedule another winter photo shoot in early January to use as sales start to flag after the holidays."
"What about the spring clothes?"
"I'll have the designs done by December and will need reference photos then. The show for the buyers will be in January, so we'll do the big ad shoots in February."
"Just make sure you give me plenty of warning. We'll be graduating in April, so time will be really tight."

Author's Note:
After being tied to a chair for days, locking Haruhi in a car isn't the best idea. We'll try the next solution for a bit and see what happens.
Last update on Yoshio's shit for a long time. Just going to leave those 5 women and 1 guy out there for a while. The topic's been done to death. And bets on if those guys will make it to another country alive? Can Kyoya risk a therapist?
What do you think about Takashi retiring from competition? Is it just temporary or for good?
Didn't write Bu's speech for the check presentation. Figured the phrases I included were good enough. And the group studied and ate dinner at the Mori/Honey apartment. I'm thinking we might stick with that for a bit. Neither Haruhi nor Bu are going to be in the mood to just randomly go out for dinner. And will Haruhi make it to Ranka's?
Leave it to Chika to give her the straight talk about security. I wanted him to rather than Takashi. Figured she'd react better to Chika's slight scolding than Takashi. They're still so new, I didn't want another fight like at St. Louis. She'll start to get more comfortable soon. Once Ogata finds her a new team lead, it will get even better.
Haruhi's agent really doesn't know her, does he?
Friday date night…thought it'd be fun. The planetarium bar is real, but I changed some of the details.
Shiraishi – White Stone – for Bu's new syndicate name. Thanks, momstable! It's perfect.

Next Chapter:
It's not written yet. (I'm behind.) But it should include…
Umeko and Akira talk to Haruhi about her parents ashes…the ladies have a spa product date with Fuyumi…Bu tours her new compound…and lots of fun and games at the capsule sleepover
