The Painful Truth - Chapter 21: Chocolate Frosting
.
Sunday, October 9:
Mid-Afternoon, Kasanoda Noodle Restaurant:
"We sure stepped in it this time, Asshole."
He just nodded and shoved more noodles in his face.
"Can't believe how much work needs to be done."
"Mmm."
Jerk.
I slammed my chopsticks down on the table, and all the muscle in the place looked over at us ready for anything.
"Are you even listening to me?"
"Yeah, Bu." He set his chopsticks down and waived his guys off. "The compound's a shithole. The decorating is worse than a blind guy threw shit on the walls, the businesses are stagnant, the money's not there, and you want to go drag Dai off his fucking boat so you can kill him with your bare hands." He raised a brow, "That about it?"
"Yeah."
"You're the boss. The real question is, what do you want to do about it?"
What do I want to do?
"I'd like to take the whole thing and shove it up Dai's ass."
"Not going to happen. Next?"
"What do you think?"
He took a deep breath and tilted his head at me, "I think it's your show. You are the boss. You are the head of the Shiraishi Syndicate. You need to make up your mind how involved you want me before you ask."
"Well, shit." I signaled for another beer. I really shouldn't be drinking, but I'm stopping at two. "How involved do you want to be?"
"As involved as you want me to be."
"Fuck, Ritsu. That's not helping."
"I'm not trying to help you, my wife. I'm trying to help you, the Boss. And I'm helping you by making you decide for yourself. Anything else and it's not your show."
Fuck.
"I'll be back," and I got up and headed for the restroom.
.
I watched that amazing ass walk towards the back of the place and signaled for another bowl of noodles. Chika, Satoshi, and I gave the co-op's gym a try this morning and I think I went overboard. I'm fucking starving.
Didn't help that Bu and I spent hours at the new compound this morning digging into all the buildings and grounds.
I know what she thinks she wants, but she'll end up resenting me if I give her too much advice. This is hers. Not mine.
I paid attention during the tour and know what I'd be doing if it was me. I'll ask if she wants me to let her know if I see a better way. But I'm only doing that in private. To everyone there at the compound, I'm just the fiancé. Nothing more.
.
I gripped the rim of the steel sink and tried to steady my hands. Water dripped off my nose and chin where I splashed it.
"I can do this…
"I'm not falling apart…
"I'm a strong, badass, yakuza Boss…
"The nightmares don't matter…
My face slowly focused in the mirror.
"Who am I kidding? I look like shit."
.
What the hell's taking so long?
The bathroom door finally opened, and she came out looking paler than she did going in.
"You ok?"
"Yeah. Just really fucking tired."
I watched her ease back into her seat and stare at her noodles. She pushed them away and sighed, "Not hungry."
We've been married for a few weeks. Engaged for a couple of months. Dating for less than a year.
Sometimes I don't have a fucking clue what to say.
So, I shut the hell up and waited.
"I need a project manager for the remodel. Someone over the decorator and architect. Someone who knows the business and can keep them isolated from it."
She's right. I just grunted. Got the feeling she's just talking herself through it.
"Need an assistant. Someone to work with Yamaki and keep me informed."
I nodded.
"You got anyone over at your syndicate that isn't sworn yet? Someone young? I wanna start fresh."
We kicked around some names, and I ended up texting Manabu, the son of the guy in charge of our protection. He just graduated college on scholarship. Pops wasn't sure he wanted him. Just not the right fit. "He can meet with you tomorrow."
After that, she got on a roll, and I leaned back and let her go. She decided on Shiryu, the steward, as the project manager. He knows more about the compound than anyone else anyway and manages the upkeep.
"I don't think I like this adult bullshit."
I choked on my tea. Once I could breathe again, I croaked out, "Me neither."
"Sometimes I just want to be a fucking teenager."
"Yeah. Bet the rest of the group feels that too."
"Always knew it was coming, but it came so fast."
I finished the last of my tea, slammed the cup down, and smirked at her, "Let's do something fun and stupid."
"Like what?"
"I don't know," I shrugged. "Shopping?"
"You're on. We need new furniture, bedding, art, entertainment centers…"

Night, Haninozuka Limo, Headed to Cho Estate after Date Night:
I can't believe I drank three of those pink fizzy things.
And Honey-kun drank three glasses of champagne.
I should be happy.
My wonderful boyfriend took me out for dinner and then dancing at the most exclusive club in Tokyo. I know Mori owns it, but we would have been let in no matter who does.
The place was amazing. We headed straight to the top floor VIP section and danced on their almost see-through floor. I can still feel the beat in my chest.
But I'm not happy.
I want to be engaged to this man sitting next to me. The man that set my skin on fire petting my fake Bun Bun tattoos all night. The man that held me tight as we spun around the dance floor. The man that kept tasting my cake lip gloss all night.
…need to order another case of it…
There were couples everywhere tonight.
At the restaurant. At the club.
And there are couples everywhere in the group. Tamaki and Renge are getting married in six months. So are Yuki and Akito. Shinobu and Ritsu are ALREADY married. Haruhi's finally dating Mori, but that won't get serious for a while. Those two are still figuring it out.
And our contract is still up in the air. I still don't have a copy of the things that the Haninozuka's don't want changed. Honey-kun and I still haven't met with the lawyers.
My head's resting on his chest, and I can hear his heartbeat when I concentrate. The patch of skin on my shoulder blade where that tattoo is has turned ultra-sensitive with his thumb stroking it this whole ride.
I want some reassurance. I want some formality. I want to know we're getting married, not just hope.
When I close my eyes and imagine, I can picture our lives together. Engaged for two years, planning the wedding. Then married, sharing an apartment somewhere downtown. Our own place. Alone and private. Studying together, eating dinner on the balcony. Breakfast in bed. Talking about our days, our challenges, our businesses. Getting to know each other so much more than we can before we live together. Then graduation and jobs. Honey-kun managing the bakeries and the real estate businesses; me helping wherever I can.
Then babies. So many babies. Being pregnant. Seeing his face when he feels them kick. The pain and work of delivery, but everything disappearing when they put that bundle in our arms. Birthdays, playdates with our friends' kids, school visits, Honey-kun teaching them martial arts, me teaching them how to bake. Watching them grow up.
Then getting married and having kids of their own. Will there be love between our kids and our friends' kids?
I want all that and more.
I love this man so much.
.
The limo pulled up to her mansion, and we both waited for the chauffeur to open the door.
"Would you like to come in for some cake, Honey-kun?"
"Thanks, Cho-chan." I'd saved the cakes in the limo for the ride back to my apartment.
I helped her out and escorted her to the door. Ten minutes later, we were sitting on the sofa in her lounge, an entire fudge cake sitting in front of me.
She reached out slowly pulled her finger through the frosting, scooping up a huge dollop. I blinked when I realized I was staring as she slowly brought it up to her face and left smears on her cheeks and lips.
Then my jaw fell open when she traced a line of chocolate frosting from her lips down her neck to her chest.
Her other hand reached out, cradled my chin, and pulled my head up to face her. "Oops. Can you help me clean this up?"
.
I was curled up with a book and Daizo was already in bed when I got the text from security that Nomura was home. I waited to hear her bedroom door, but nothing. I was going to ask how her night went.
What is taking her so long?
I read another couple of pages and checked my phone again. Twenty minutes? She should be up here by now.
Maybe she's eating a snack.
I'll go join her.
.
Honey-kun lunged at me, sucking the frosting off my finger. Then he slowly started nibbling it off my cheeks.
There will definitely be a bucket of frosting in our honeymoon suite.
When his arm went around my waist and his lips followed the trail of frosting down my neck, I knew I was in heaven.
.
She wasn't in the kitchen.
Why is the lounge door closed?
"Nomura?"
I took a moment to realize what I was seeing.
Mitsukuni was practically lying on top of my daughter, his mouth attached to her throat.
Then I noticed what Nomura was wearing. Or not wearing.
Is that a dress or a slip? Spaghetti straps. Cleavage. And the bottom came to the top of her thighs. Then a couple of centimeters of skin before the pink lace thigh-highs started. Is that a tattoo?
I cleared my throat, and they sprang apart.
If she wasn't my daughter and I hadn't just found her half naked with a boy, it might have been funny.
"Mother?"
"Cho-sama?" He hasn't called me that since the first time we met.
"I think it's time Mitsukuni went home."
"Yes, Cho-sama," he stuttered as he stood. I looked the other way when he untucked his shirt. Guess he's not the child my husband thinks he is. "Right away, Cho-sama."
He kissed her knuckles, and I heard him whisper, "I'll call you tomorrow," then he was gone like a bullet train.
I turned back to Nomura. She wasn't embarrassed. She was sitting there with a napkin wiping frosting off her chest.
With more poise that I could have ever mustered in her situation, she smiled at me and said, "I know we can't get married right away, but I think we need that contract done."
"I'll talk to your father." And I fled the room.
.
SLAM
I jerked awake to find Mie standing over me.
"What?"
Then she switched on the light.
"I just found our daughter and Mitsukuni in the lounge. Kissing."
That woke me up.
"Kissing how?"
"Kissing like he was licking her neck."
I threw off the covers and headed for the door.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to kick him out."
"He's already gone, Daizo. I took care of it."
.
He spun around and headed back to the bed where I'd already sat down. "I assume you were more polite than I would have been."
"Definitely."
He sat down next to me, and I sighed, "We need to get that contract done."
"I'll give her what I have tomorrow. The clauses that can't be changed are marked."
"And I'll call Kumi tomorrow."
And perhaps we should explore the idea of birth control.

Night, Honey/Mori Apartment:
I'd just refilled my water bottle in the kitchen and was walking back to my room when the door slammed shut and I saw Mitsukuni running for his room.
Then his shower turned on.
Must have worked up a sweat dancing.

Monday, October 10:
Late Morning, Phone Call between Mei and Kumi:
Kumi: "Good morning. I was going to call you later this week to invite you to tea. How about Thursday?"
Mei: "Actually, I think we need to talk sooner."
Kumi: I can hear it in her voice. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
Mei: I'll tell her flat out. She'll understand. "Nomura and Mitsukuni went out for dinner and dancing last night."
Kumi: "Oh, I didn't realize. Now that he's at his own apartment, I don't always know." Surely security would have told me if there was a problem. "Is everything alright?"
Mei: "Well…I'm sure their evening out was fine. I'm more concerned about finding them in the lounge when he dropped her off."
Kumi: I'm sure Mitsukuni was a gentlemen…wasn't he?
Mei: "They were kissing."
Kumi: Oh, just kissing.
Mei: "It was quite heated."
Kumi: "Heated as in…?"
Mei: "Their clothes were still on, but it was…," how do I say it? "Intense."
Kumi: "Oh."
Mei: "I think the contract should be completed as soon as possible."
Kumi: Sounds like it. "It can be hard, but I remember being young and in love. The passion and the impatience." And the passion doesn't really go away…I'm pregnant after all. "It will still be at least a year, probably more, before they can marry."
Mei: "At least they'll be engaged." And I can suggest birth control to Nomura.
Kumi: "Yes. The sooner the better." And I can get Yorihisa to get condoms for Mitsukuni. "Do you have a suggestion to proceed? Our husbands seem to be dragging this out."
Mei: "What if the six of us meet with the lawyers and finish it." How hard can it be?
Kumi: "In just one meeting? I'm not sure that's enough time..." Obviously, her contract wasn't as complex as ours was. As Mitsukuni's needs to be.
It was silent for several moments. I could tell she's letting me think it over. As the higher family and the parents of the heir, it falls on us to move things along.
Getting together and negotiating with the six of us and lawyers is probably the fastest way, but it won't be a quick lunch meeting. After what Ootori did to Haruhi-chan, I wouldn't be surprised if both Mitsukuni and Nomura-chan both want personal lawyers involved. And I'm not opposed to that.
What if…?
"I have it," I snapped my fingers. "What if we get the six of us and the lawyers and go away for a couple days. We could finalize the contract and we could all get to know each other better as well."
Mei: "That would work. When? Do you have a location in mind?"
Kumi: I'd already pulled up my calendar. "Next week is quite busy for Yorihisa at work. But what about this week?"
Mei: "So soon?"
Kumi: "After what you walked in on last night?"
Mei: She's right. "What days?"
Kumi: "How about we leave Wednesday after the workday and come back Friday morning. That leaves Wednesday night for preliminary discussions, and all day Thursday to finalize it, have the lawyers write it up, and then we can all sign it that night."
Mei: "That would work. Daizo should be able to shift his meetings around."
Kumi: "As for where, the Haninozuka's have an onsen retreat in Kusatsu. It's large enough for the families and the lawyers and staff."
Mei: "Sounds heavenly. It's been a long time since I've had a good soak."
Kumi: "Perfect. I'll see to the arrangements. We'll take our private jet. It's only three hours. The jet is small enough for their private airport, so we won't need to take the train."
Mei: "I'll let Daizo and Nomura know." I scribbled some quick notes. "Thank you, Kumi-san. Getting this done will be a big relief."
Kumi: "Yes, it will. I'll inform Yorihisa and Mitsukuni and email you the travel details. We'll handle security. Let me know if it will be more than just the four of you."
Mei: "I'll watch for your email."

After Classes, Inoue-sensei's Office:
"Then Nagata decided Ebisu would ride in the back with me. That way they could keep the doors unlocked from the inside, but I wouldn't forget and just jump out."
Amazing how people don't think before they do something. Haruhi's been in a deadly car accident then kidnapped, blindfolded, gagged, and strapped down to a chair for over two days. It should be obvious that locking her into a car was an incredibly stupid idea. But what's done is done.
"How's that working for you?"
She heaved a big sigh and leaned back on the sofa. It's clear she doesn't want to be here. That she's not really ready to talk about everything that happened during those fifty-three hours. Best I can do is chip away at the edges and hope she'll be ready soon.
Her eyes had a slightly haunted look, and they were shadowed by lack of sleep. They kept darting around the room, landing in the corners like she was looking for something. She'd been taking slow breaths, trying to keep from snapping. This being on edge isn't good. Has she been like this all week?
"I haven't had another panic attack from not being able to get out of the car. Nagata's been sending another car ahead of us to do a sweep. That way, everything's ready when I get there so I'm not really waiting in the car. I didn't have to wait at all when we got here."
I bet she hates the trouble and expense of that advance car.
I watched her blinks last longer and longer as she fought drifting off. She must not be getting any sleep.
.
I'm not telling her about the nightmares.
No one needs to know I'm seeing things.
That man isn't around. He's arrested.
Takashi said they arrested everyone except those two that were killed.
That man with the knife can't get to me ever again.
Now I just have to make my dreams believe that.
.
When she spoke next, she kept her eyes shut. "The Morinozuka's offered to bring Mom, Dad, and Jarou-san to their estate so I could have them close by."
That's a big step.
"At first, I couldn't believe it. Why would they offer to do that? It's such a personal thing.
"Then it finally hit me. After having Chika telling me to stop thinking about me living there as temporary. After everything they've done to make me feel like I belong." She lifted her head up and stared at me. "They're family. My family has grown. Their estate is my home. And I don't need to hold on to things that make me separate from them…like opening my own car door…to still be me."
That's a long way in eight months.
"Satoshi suggested I start calling them obasan and ojisan." The small smile on her face told me everything I needed to know. "And it feels right."

Evening, Shinobu's Private Office, Himura Compound:
I was really tired after yesterday and classes today, so I had my lawyer and the gentlemen's clubs' manager come to the compound for their update. Manabu and I met this morning, and he agreed to be my assistant, so he's sitting in too. The clubs aren't part of the Shiraishi Syndicate, but he's more of a personal assistant, not just for the new syndicate.
Ritsu's somewhere doing his biology homework. Ha ha.
After the maid left us with tea, I picked up my pen, "Where are we on the remodels, Tashiro-san?"
"On schedule, Himura-sama. The Techno club opens Friday, October 21st." He pulled up the design specs and current pictures on his laptop and turned it towards me. "This is the largest of the five. There are four private party rooms large enough for groups of twenty. Each include a stage and two poles. Neon, black light, and laser lighting throughout. Four bars. Three stages, one with a catwalk down the middle of the place. Over by the fourth bar is a dance floor area set up like a club."
"Dance floor? I didn't approve the women working there dancing with the customers." No fucking way are those guys getting close enough to touch.
"No, not the strippers…."
"Entertainers," I cut him off.
"Not the entertainers. This would be for couples coming as customers."
"Female customers?"
"It's not unheard of."
"Whatever," I waived my hand for him to continue.
"Each stage and the club have a VIP section with table service and the option of a dedicated server."
"Costumes?"
"Each entertainer can personalize, but will contain lots of silver, gold, and sparkling fabric." He pulled up some examples.
"Alright. Next."
"American 20's will open the week following. Friday, October 28. One main stage with three removeable poles. Two private party rooms. No club area. Think Gatsby."
"What?"
"The Great Gatsby. American novel. They do parties in that theme over there."
I did a quick search on my tablet and waved him on.
"Champagne towers were big then. We'll do those on request and for a price." I nodded. "There will be four large champagne glasses scattered throughout the audience. Big enough for a strip…entertainer to get in and pose. Their choice if they want water or not."
Men are pigs.
"We also have five birdcages suspended from the ceiling for the entertainers to dance in."
"Fucking cages," I slammed my hand on the table, "I said no fucking cages."
My glare practically blasted him back in his seat. "I know you did, Himura-sama, but these cages aren't confining." He pulled up a picture. "The bars aren't close enough." He's right. Ritsu could walk between those without turning sideways. "I cleared it with the entertainers. They know they have a choice to use them or not."
I took a long, deep breath and blew it out slowly. Those ladies will know better than anyone what the guys coming will want. And it's their choice.
"Fine. Next."
"November 4, the next Friday, Heaven & Hell opens." He switched the images on the screen. "About the same size as the 20's, but a step up on clientele and service. Lots of fire and ice themed decorations. Option to get your drinks served in ice glasses. Entertainers dressed as devils, waitresses as angels. We had two entertainers get certified in fire-breathing and have gotten the necessary licenses and insurance for them to include that in their act."
He started a video and I saw a girl in skimpy black leather breathe fire straight up. "Different."
"It hasn't been done in Tokyo." I turned to Jinno-san, my lawyer, "Getting the license took some time."
"But should be well worth it," Tashiro continued. "We also have a moveable, hanging ring that a waitress can ride to deliver drinks. She'll have wings."
Damn, men are simple-minded. Bet Asshole will like it.
"Three private party rooms, each with stage and pole. No club area."
"And the fourth?"
"Elegance opens Nov 25. It's the most complex, most elite so it's taking longer. Based on location and suggestions from the entertainers, we decided to go with a supper club and dance floor. Think elite restaurant with strippers."
"Entertainers," I glared at him. "How's it elite?"
"Membership only. Monthly fees plus cost of food and drinks. Extras include private parties, servers, dancers, etc. Two main areas. First is the restaurant. There's a stage on one side, not unlike Ranka's." I raised a brow. "We didn't copy it; I'm using it as an example because I know you've been there."
"Fine."
"Entertainers dressed as classy as possible for strippers." I gave him another glare, but he just shrugged, "That's what they are, Himura-sama. That's what some of them refer to themselves as."
"Fine."
"Waitresses dressed in short skirts and shelf bras."
I looked over at my lawyer, "And that's fine with food regulations?" He nodded.
"The second area is the dance floor surrounded by cocktail tables. Members can bring dates. The entertainers have small stages around the dance floor. There's no mixing.
"Two private rooms set up for meals, two additional ones for entertainment and drinks only."
"That just leaves the last one." After their stupid idea of a library, I sent them back to the drawing board for new ideas. "What's the theme?"
"Sports." And he pulled up more pictures.
.
I had a couple backup ideas, but they weren't near as good. I'd assumed she'd like this, so we've already started the basic remodel. Most of it can be used for other ideas if we need to.
"Entertainers dressed in sexy sport uniforms. Waitresses in sexy referee uniforms. There will be TVs above the bar for different sports, but not near the stage. It will function as half sports bar, half strip club. Three private rooms that can be rented either for watching specific events, for entertaining, or both.
"Main stage is a boxing ring. It's set up so the floor is a cover for a mud pit. The entertainers can mud wrestle for special events or extra cost."
Her uncovered eye rolled, and I heard her mumble, "Men are pigs," under her breath. Some of them sure are. And we'll make them pay.
"One of the party rooms has a removeable floor to get to a mud pit. Entertainers can wrestle, or guests can, but not together."
"Damn fucking straight."
She clicked through the concept art for a few minutes. "Approved. When can it open?"
"December 2nd."
"Fine." She turned to the lawyer, "Any legal issues?"
"None, Himura-sama. All licenses applied for have been granted without problems. Liability and insurance are complete for the first four. I'll start on the sport club as soon as the designs are finalized."
"Police problems?"
"Local patrolmen have been by to see what's being built in their neighborhoods, but no issues further up. All the books and locations are prepared for audits and investigations, just in case."
"Yeah, they all know who owns them."
She leaned back and crossed her arms in front of her. "That just leaves security." I started to tell her what we've set up so far, but she stopped me. "These things better make a profit, but I don't expect it right away. Security comes first. It will not be compromised because of cost. Security for the women is priority. They are escorted in and out, to and from their cars or transportation. I want a woman in each club acting as a manager for the female employees. Someone they can come to with any issue they have, outside, with the clients, or among them."
This is new, and I'm taking notes.
"And no other business is conducted in these clubs. Not by any of the employees. No prostitution. No porn. No nothing."
"Yes, Himura-sama."
"I don't care if the business is legal, no other business by the employees."
"Yes, Himura-sama."
"Then, unless there's anything else, I think we're done until I can come out for inspections."
.
They left, and I went to lie down. My eye's throbbing, and that's not a good thing.
I had almost drifted off when Ritsu found me. "You ok?"
"Yeah. Biology done?"
"Yeah. What the fuck do I need to know the difference between a mushroom and a plant for?"
"Aren't mushrooms plants?"
"Nope."
"Fuck."
I felt the bed dip as he crawled in next to me and wrapped his arm around my waist. "How'd the meeting go?"
"First one opens on October 21."
"That's two weeks."
He curled up closer and started playing with my hair. Maybe I should keep it short.
Nah…It looks badass long. Fucking took years to grow it.
"So, do I have a big opening party?"
"Which is the first?"
"Techno."
"I wouldn't. It's nothing special."
"What?"
"It's a good theme, but it's not unique. Wait for one of the others."
"Heaven & Hell opens November 2. That one would be better."
"Sounds like fun."
"Couple of the entertainers breathe fire."
"You're more than hot enough for me, Bu."
He kissed my neck and I moaned, "Save it. We've got another week."
"Shit."
"What about the group? Think the guys might want to come?"
"Well, it's only Akito, Me, Mori, Honey, and Tamaki. The twins aren't eighteen yet. And Satoshi and Chika won't be for over a year."
"When's the twin's birthday?"
"No idea." He pulled out his phone and Googled. "December 15."
"Damn. All of them will be open by then."
"Doesn't mean they can't come later."
"I guess."
"Hey, after all that shit we learned about Cho, maybe she'd want to come."
"Not bad, Asshole. I'll bring it up on Wednesday."
"We can still go to the Techno opening, right?"
Men. They are so simple.
"Sure, Asshole."

Night, Email from Cho to Keiko:
…and it worked. Honey-kun and I, along with all four parents and our lawyers, are going away for a couple of days to get the contract finished. Barring catastrophe, it will be signed by Friday morning, and he can propose any time after that. I can't wait.
You'll be my maid of honor, of course.
And I'll see you Sunday. Kyoya's so nice to be giving me a ride. I know you'll have classes, but I'm sure we can find time to do some fun things. I want to see your dorm. It sounds so small and strange. At least you don't have a roommate.
You'll have to take me shopping. And I'm sure you know the best place to get pizza. I miss the ones we got in St. Louis. Nothing in Tokyo compares.
And we'll have to…

Night, Email from Haruhi to Katayama's (Grandparents):
…Thank you for your email. It's good to hear from you.
Things are going well here. All the stitches are out, and my physical therapy is progressing. It will still be another week before I'm allowed to start writing again. Typing with one hand is harder than I thought.
I'm not sure when the best time for a visit is. I'm very busy with school both making up assignments and working on a huge project. The fashion show is this week, and Petto Chinmi ads are being released soon.
Perhaps next month…

Thank you for arranging the interviews for my new assistant and attaching the final resumes.
Wednesday afternoon is fine. I'll be over at the estate for lunch with Mother then the interviews. I appreciate your offer to assist with them and will take you up on it.
See you Wednesday afternoon.

Aihara (Ooka Director): "The final selection committee meeting is tomorrow at one. I've confirmed all members will attend."
Tamaki: "Including the twins?"
Aihara (Ooka Director): "Yes, Suoh-sama. They're taking the afternoon classes off."
Tamaki: "Excellent. Are all the arrangements made for the final construction in the galleries, Claudia-san?"
Claudia (Ooka Manager): "Yes, Suoh-sama. Once we know the final equipment needed, modifications can be made immediately. Final equipment orders are ready, and all equipment will be delivered by the 23rd. All galleries will be ready for the November 1st opening."
Tamaki: "Thank you so much. Both of you. You are a huge part of the co-op's success."

Night, Phone call between Renge and Wedding Planner:
Renge: "How long will the meeting Friday take? I have a Hitachiin red carpet to walk that night."
Gushiken (Wedding Planner): "It's a quick run-through by the manager so we can see the progress on the remodel. It shouldn't take more than an hour."
Renge: I don't see why I have to be a part of this, but now that Tamaki's grandmother's gone, we're doing much more of what we want, so it probably isn't a bad idea to be there. "Fine, but no longer. My spa appointment is Thursday night, but I still have hair and makeup along with dinner with my fiancé."
Gushiken (Wedding Planner): "I'll make sure they know about the time constraints. We also need to finalize the date for your local bridesmaids to have their first fitting."
Renge: I scrolled through my calendar. I know Anne-Sophie wants to be there with us and she shared hers with me so I know her availability. "Monday the seventeenth. Haruhi, Yuki, Shinobu, and Cho all show available, but Haruhi will be have to be last. She has an appointment right after classes."
Gushiken (Wedding Planner): I held back a sigh. Her maid-of-honor has been nothing but trouble. This will be my first time meeting her, though I've certainly seen her in the news and social media. "I'll have her dress held for last."
Renge: "My future mother-in-law, Anne-Sophie, will also attend. It's the perfect time for her first fitting as well."
Gushiken (Wedding Planner): "I'll make sure the dressmakers know she'll be there."
Renge: "Good. Now, about their shoes…"

Haruhi,
I have been named to the Board of Directors for a new venture of Lightening Investments. The next meeting is November 2nd in Seoul.
I know you want to attend the first day of the first trial and it starts that day. I'm planning on flying the Haninozuka jet over the night before and leaving that evening.
Would you like to join me? There's space for you and up to twenty of your staff. It will save Petto Chinmi some funds. And no, you won't be costing the Haninozuka's any extra. The plane is going whether you are on it or not, so please accept my offer.
Let me know how many, and I'll make sure your assistant gets the flight details.

School…internship…homework…sleep…
I haven't even gone shopping since all that mess with Haruhi and Shinobu.

Maybe Kaoru and I could come visit sometime during the winter holidays…

Night, Phone call with Kaoru and Every Woman Staff:
Kaoru: "After everything that's happened in the last few months, my main concern is security."
Omigawa (Director): "We contracted with Morinozuka Security as requested. And the Ootori Black Onion Squad has reviewed the plans as an independent consultant."
Kaoru: "Why the BOS?" I know Haruhi's letting him off the hook, but…
Omigawa (Director): "Morinozuka's wanted a second set of eyes. Someone with more celebrity experience. They recommended them."
Kaoru: "Oh, well if they wanted them…"
Mao (Assistant): "They have it covered, Hitachiin-san. They said they're using the model from the On Okuri ball."
Kaoru: "Good. Nothing happened there but that cat."
Omigawa (Director): "Cat?"
Kaoru: "Never mind."
Omigawa (Director): "Everything for the show and the afterparty is also ready."
Kaoru: "Same security for the afterparty?"
Omigawa (Director): "Yes."
Kaoru: "Where are we on the new models?"
Suwa (Sales and Marketing Head): "We've done an open call for women in their thirties and women in their fifties. Headshots are coming in."
Kaoru: "You specifically asked for fresh faces?"
Suwa (Sales and Marketing Head): "Yes. No one with more than one small ad with less than a thousand imprints."
Kaoru: "What about tryouts?"
Suwa (Sales and Marketing Head): "Early November. I'll weed out the ones that won't work then the two of us can sit down and decide who we want to see in person."
Omigawa (Director): "I recommend including more of the staff in that process."
Kaoru: "Mao, Head of PR, Head of Sales, Head Photographer, Market Research, Sales Manager, and you, Omigawa. Along with anyone else you think should be there."
Omigawa (Director): "Wataru, the jewelry designer. As the only other male on staff, he'll bring that perspective."
Mao (Assistant): "What about Fujioka-sama?"
Kaoru: Yeah, right. Like Haruhi'd want to be a part of that mess. "I'll ask her, but I don't think she'll be interested."
Omigawa (Director): "She'll be working with them closely. Her opinion will be valuable."
Kaoru: "I'll try."

To: Shinohara (On Okuri CEO); Imamura (On Okuri Spokesperson); Tomii (Haninozuka Head of Real Estate Properties)
Ladies and Gentlemen,
After the huge success of the opening ball and the large press attendance for the recent check presentations, I believe it's time to find On Okuri new offices. Offices that allow for the elite of Japan to visit in comfort.
They will need individual offices for each staff member and at least two held for board members when needed. A room for formal presentations and small fundraising events will also be needed. No more than 100 people.
Tomii-san, is there anything in the current Haninozuka portfolio that On Okuri could rent/purchase? Or perhaps be donated?
Let's set up a meeting…

Mori: "You don't want to set yourself back by doing too much."
Haruhi: "I suppose," I sighed. I just want to be better.
Mori: "I know you haven't been sleeping well. You can call me anytime if you need to talk. Even in the middle of the night."
Haruhi: "I know, but I don't want to bother…"
Mori: "It's no bother. The next semester hasn't started yet, so don't worry about waking me up if you want to talk."
Haruhi: "Thanks." But if I woke you up to tell you I thought I saw that man with the knife hiding in the shadows, you'd think I'm crazy.
Mori: "Do you have dinner plans tomorrow?"
Haruhi: I didn't need to check my calendar. "I'll be at the office, but I'm not sure if we'll order in or if I'll come back here."
Mori: "How about dinner here at the apartment." I'm sure I could get Mitsukuni to go out with Cho.

"Bridesmaid, Asshole. Not only are we invited, but she wants me in the fucking wedding. I'm not just an heir anymore. I'm the head of a fucking syndicate, for fuck's sake. I can't be in the Suoh wedding!"
"Why not? His grandmother's dead. She won't care."
"It's not just his grandmother and you know it."
"Yeah, but…"

Tuesday, October 11:
Lunch, Dining Hall, Ouran:
As soon as we walked in, Renge practically jumped across the table, "I saw you giving a tour at the sports complex this morning. Did they like it? Are they going to hire you? How's business?"
Bu just looked at her and said, "No more coffee."
"Sorry," but she swallowed the last in her cup, "I was up late last night."
"I know," Haruhi grumbled. "I got your email about the fittings. I have an appointment right after classes on Monday, so I'll be late." Wonder what that appointment is. She usually isn't that cryptic.
"I saw it in your calendar. They'll work on everyone else until you get there."
"Anyway," Renge turned back to me, "was the tour a success?"
"Not sure. They are still in the beginning stages and don't know what they need. It's an apartment complex, but they aren't sold yet on going full out green."
"You couldn't talk them into it?"
"I let my CEO do most of the talking. Not sure, but I think the yakuza connection is the problem with this group."
"Well, they're idiots if that's the reason. If you want, Tamaki-kun and I would be glad to give you a reference. I know Suoh #2 isn't done yet, but everything your company's done has been stupendous."
Shit. Maybe I should get her another cup of coffee. "That'd be great. I was going to ask but didn't want to until we were done. We could put it up on the website."
"Consider it done," and she already had her phone out and was texting someone, probably her assistant.
"Speaking of dress fittings," Bu glared at her, "you need to get me out of your wedding, Renge."
"Absolutely not."
"Yes, you do. Just pretend you never asked." When Renge tried to jump in, Bu plowed on, "Think! You're marrying the Suoh heir. I can't think of a bigger political wedding this country will see unless it's royalty or Ootori. You can't have a yakuza in it. And I'm not just any yakuza. I'm the heir to the Himura Syndicate, the head of the Shiraishi Syndicate, and married to the heir of the Kasanoda Syndicate. It just can't be done."
"Who says it can't be done?"
"I do. Any politician out there. The Suoh board of directors. Anyone with any common sense. Have you even asked Tamaki's father about this?"
I put my hand on her shoulder and leaned in, "You might want to lower your voice. People are staring."
"Shit," she whispered under her breath, then she continued without the yelling, "I wasn't included before because of that old battle-axe. She knew it couldn't be done. I understand changing the flowers and other shit now that she's gone, but this is fucking nuts."
.
I tried not to cry. I really did. But my lip started to tremble and then two tears fell when I blinked.
Ritsu cursed under his breath, "Shit. Now look what you've done, you crazy wife."
"I'm sorry, Renge." She reached over and handed me a handkerchief. I had no idea she carried them. "I don't want to make you feel bad, but it is a terrible idea."
My wedding. Something I've planned since I was three. How beautiful it would be. How in love I would be with my fiancé. The flowers, the music, the dress. And everyone supporting me.
"You don't want to come?"
"Dammit," her uncovered eye rolled, and she heaved a sigh, "Of course I want to be there. You all are my friends. You and Tamaki are great together, and the wedding will be perfect. But that doesn't mean I should be there."
She scrubbed her hands through her short hair. How does it manage to still look good after that? "Tell me the truth. Have you asked Tamaki's father about us even coming to the wedding? Let alone me being part of the bridal party?"
"It's not just you." I glanced over at Ritsu, "Tamaki will be asking you to be a groomsman this week."
"Shit, Renge," he growled. "The tux better not make me look stupid."
Shinobu punched him in the shoulder, "Not the point, Asshole." She set her palms flat on the table and leaned forward, "Have you asked Suoh-san?"
Dammit. She's going to make me answer. "Nooooo…"
"Well, then!"
"But I'm sure he'll say yes." I was just waiting until it would be harder for him to say no. "But Anne-Sophie knows."
"And I'm sure you didn't explain the political implications to her when you told her."
"Well…"
By this time, the tears were gone, and I was angry. It's my wedding. I should be able to have the one I want.
"Enough," Haruhi made us all jump by slamming her fist on the table. She pointed at Shinobu, "Calm down. Deep breaths. Don't let your blood pressure spike." Then she turned to me, "You and Tamaki-sen…Tamaki sit down with his parents and your father and get a decision, one way or another."
"And if he approves?"
"Then Shinobu's stuck wearing a bridesmaid dress with me, and Ritsu's wearing a tux."
.
Renge-senpai wants a yakuza as a bridesmaid?
And Himura-senpai's married to Kasanoda-senpai? I knew they were engaged, but she said married.
Looks like they're all done.
"What's the charity today, Chika?"
He's so polite, he didn't even roll his eyes. I know it was in the school paper yesterday, the On Okuri website, and there's even a poster standing at the dining room door, but I love hearing his voice.
"Asia-Japan Women's Resource Center, or AJWRC. Their mission is to eradicate all forms of violence and discrimination against women, including sexual violence, trafficking, and exploitation. While we already had them on the list before the ball, Lighthouse recommended them."
"Do they work together?"
"Yes, mainly in advocacy and campaigning."
I reached out my hand, "Here are seven donations from me and my friends."
"Thanks." I shivered as his finger touched mine.
"Ah, Chika? Do you want to get together and study for that civics test next week?"
"I'm not sure about my schedule, Koizumi-san. I have several business meetings coming up."
"Oh. But if your schedule frees up, please let me know. I've heard a couple of third-years talking about it, and they said it was a hard test."
Why doesn't he want to study with me? I've done almost everything I can think of, and he hasn't told me he's not interested…
"I'll keep you in mind."
.
As soon as she was out of earshot, I turned on him, "What is the matter with you? You're never going to get a date acting like that."
"Leave me alone, Satoshi. Mind your own business."
"Fine, but she's right about the test. I've heard that, too."

Afternoon, Conference Room, Black Onion Squad (in person meeting, but using ID tags to keep everyone straight):
Ogata-san walked in and acknowledged me with a nod. If he was surprised to see the Morinozuka heir here for a security meeting, he didn't show it. Though after what happened with Haruhi, my presence should be expected.
He'd only had a week, but he'd been busy. He introduced his lawyer, Kagiyama-san and his assistant, Kozu-san. "I've made inquiries to my contacts in other countries and am working on contracts with a few of them. Once we settle on a contract among us, we'll decide on a timeline, and they'll travel here for certain inspections and meetings."
Makes sense. I wouldn't expect anyone to relocate until Ogata-san's company was well established. I'm sure some will work as consultants and not relocate to this country at all.
Morimoto, as the head of the Black Onion Squad, the organization that will be the signatory on the contract with Ogata-san, started the meeting…
Morimoto (BOS Head): "Good afternoon. Most of us know each other, but let's go around the room. Please introduce yourselves and give your role and affiliation…"
Ogata (Consultant): "Also tell us your number one security concern, keeping it to just a couple sentences, please."
Morimoto (BOS Head): I nodded, accepting his request. "I'll go first. Morimoto, head of the Ootori Black Onion Squad. As for my greatest concern, time. After what happened, we're all vulnerable and the country knows it."
I turned to my left and nodded at Ootori-sama.
Kyoya: "Ootori Kyoya. Head of the Ootori Conglomeration and owner of the Black Onion Squad. Greatest concern: the rising celebrity of Fujioka-san."
Tachibana (Kyoya's Head): "Tachibana. Ootori Kyoya's PPD Head. The current review of all BOS officers."
Kyoya-sama glanced at me from the corner of his eye, but it is my biggest concern. We've had two fail Yuki-sama within the last month. Clearly, we need assistance in cleaning house.
Kondo (Ootori Head): "Kondo Ikki, head of security for the Ootori Conglomeration. Maintaining the privacy of those that wish it."
Hibino (Himura Head): "Hibino. Head of security for the Himura Syndicate." I glared at Ootori. "Rising celebrity and fame of Himura-sama." Fujioka-sama isn't the only one whose profile has risen dramatically.
Igaya (Shiraishi Head): They really threw me to the wolves here. Hibino and Fujii gave me a quick rundown of what to expect at today's meeting, but shit… I'm sitting at a table with the head of the Ootori Conglomeration and the Morinozuka Heir. I may have been Fujii's second for years, but I've never been in a room like this.
They all know the Chiba Syndicate is now the Shiraishi Syndicate and Himura-sama's the head. They just don't know all the details.
"Igaya Nabuo. Head of security for the new Shiraishi Syndicate. My greatest concern is getting up to speed fast enough to prevent an incident." I followed that with a quick glare. No one better laugh at my expense.
Fujii (Kasanoda Head): "Fujii Jin. Head of Kasanoda Syndicate security." Guess I'll drop the bomb. Ritsu-sama told me it was time everyone knew. "Most of this room doesn't know what I'm about to tell you. The group was told Saturday night at their sleepover, but no one else until now. On September third in Las Vegas Ritsu-sama and Shinobu-sama were married."
I just about shit myself when Ishikawa handed over a ten-thousand yen bill to Oshiro, both grinning at each other.
Ogata (Consultant): "Well, that definitely changes some of the dynamics."
Fujii (Kasanoda Head): "Yes, it does. First, they'll be moving in to the Shiraishi, formerly Chiba, Compound after the master wing's remodel is complete at the beginning of November. Second, although the group does know, they are not announcing to any other syndicate or the public for now. When the announcement will be made is currently unknown."
Kawabata (Suoh Head): "But they'll be living together. Won't everyone figure it out?"
Fujii (Kasanoda Head): "It's not unheard of for a yakuza couple to live together after they're engaged but prior to marriage. It's just not common."
Ogata (Consultant): "And your biggest concern?"
Fujii (Kasanoda Head): "Integration of security for the three syndicates and integrating that into the group security."
Ogata-san nodded his head along with several others. It's a big shit show.
Harada (Hitachiin Head): "Harada Mikio. Head Security for Hitachiin Fashions and the family. Red carpets and other interactions with the public are my biggest headache."
Kawabata (Suoh Head): "Kawabata Kojima. Suoh security head. Right now, Tamaki-sama is insisting he be allowed to drive himself starting next semester."
That got some smiles and even a chuckle from Ootori-sama which was my goal. This heavy meeting needed a chuckle.
Ogata (Consultant): We'd made it around to my assistant. There's no need for her or my lawyer to introduce themselves. I've already done it. I turned and nodded to the man to the left of my lawyer.
Ohiko (Haninozuka Lawyer): "Ohi…" I cleared my throat and tried again, "Ohiko Tetsui, Haninozuka head attorney. My biggest concern is all the legal pitfalls that come from combining this many primaries, security teams, and elite families."
Ishikawa (Haninozuka Head): "Ishikawa. Haninozuka security head. I have many concerns, some of which have already been expressed. The biggest currently is all the intricacies of dealing with fifteen young primaries and their teams when they constantly form large and small groups for different activities. The teams must work together constantly. We need better integration."
And the fact that my family head and his wife are pregnant, Mitsukuni-sama wants to drive his bunny car more often, the marriage contract is up in the air and they are insisting on flying off at a moment's notice for negotiations, Yasuchika-sama's been suspiciously quiet since coming back from St. Louis and will be taking more business trips, and time. There's never enough.
Oshiro (Morinozuka Head): "Oshiro Isamu. Morinozuka security head. Data management. The search during the kidnapping showed several holes, though small, in our data collection and sharing. There's so much data including the license plate collection, calendars, threat tracking, friends outside the group, all the different businesses they own…there must be a better way, but I don't even know what questions to ask."
I have specific concerns about Haruhi-sama, but I'm sure Takashi-sama will address them.
Mori: "Morinozuka Takashi. Morinozuka Heir. Haruhi is my greatest concern. She's struggling with her recent trauma and how her security affects her. Her celebrity has gotten ten times worse, and she doesn't know how to cope. Right now, my PPD head is her acting head. Finding her a new head with celebrity experience that can build a new team to keep her safe is my only concern now."
Kyoya: She's struggling? What does that mean?
Tachibana leaned over and whispered, "I'll explain later, but it has to do with the graveyard."
The cemetery. The fucking cemetery. When I saw the footage it was all I could do not to throw my tea cup through the TV. What was she thinking? What was her security thinking?
Osakada (Houshakuji Japan Head): "Osakada Koji, Head of Houshakuji security in Japan. My concerns have already been expressed."
Horii (BOS Lawyer): "Horii. Black Onion Squad Lawyer. My immediate concern is finalizing the contract so that everyone can get to work."
Morimoto (BOS Head): I let my assistant introduce herself but jumped in right after. She doesn't have a concern except what I tell her.
"Everyone in the group is growing up. Engagements, marriages, dating, starting businesses, univeristy. Security must be flexible as they move into new phases of their lives.
"Ogata-san, you're the expert. We've come to you for help. What do you suggest?"
Ogata (Consultant): I looked down at the list of issues. Some I knew about, and some I didn't. The yakuza marriage came as a complete surprise, but since two heirs have never married before, I should consider everything about them a surprise.
Family and business security heads will have different concerns from the PPD heads, which will be different from the general security officer, which will all be completely different from the primaries themselves.
And Oshiro's right. Data. There's so much data.
"At first glance,…"

Afternoon, Ooka Artist Co-op:
After months of preparation, weeks of selection, and all the construction, we finally have our first twenty artists.
I looked around the table at my selection team, those crazy twins, two artists I've shown at the gallery, the dean of the art school, and my director, Aihara-san. Claudia-san, my manager, joined the meeting though she doesn't sit on the selection team. We reviewed hundreds of applicants with specialties ranging from the traditional painting, pottery, photography, sculpture, and metalwork, to digital, fabric, and paper.
And now we're calling the artist that inspired it all, Domon Hozumi.
It really wasn't that long ago when Renge and I saw him sketching in the park and the idea came to me. There was no doubt in my mind that he should be one of the first selected. Unfortunately, those crazy twins didn't think he qualified and wanted to put him on the waitlist, but the rest of the team disagreed.
.
Phone call:
Tamaki: "Domon-san, I wanted to call you in person to congratulate you on your acceptance as an artist-in-residence at the Ooka Artist Co-op."
Domon: Oh, shit. I really didn't think I'd make it. "Thank you so much, Suoh-sama. It's an honor and a privilege."
Tamaki: "There's so much to discuss. You're one of twenty artists selected. Move in is October 29 with the official opening to the public November first."
Claudia: "Domon-san, my name is Claudia Erdmann, and I'm Ooka's manager. We've met once before during the interview process."
Domon: "Yes, Erdmann-san, I remember. It's an honor." What else do I say?
Claudia: "There will be an orientation meeting and lots of logistics to discuss. You'll be receiving an email with all the details, don't worry. Once all artists have been informed of their selection and given time to review the email, I'll be calling you back to answer any questions. We're very excited to welcome you to Ooka Artist Co-op."
Domon: "Thank you, Erdmann-san, Suoh-sama. I'll go through the information as soon as I receive it."
Tamaki: "Congratulations again, Domon-san. You inspired the idea, and I'm thrilled you are joining us."
.
"You didn't even let us talk."
"I thought you didn't want him."
"Doesn't mean we didn't want to congratulate him," Hika pouted. He just wanted to give out the good news.
"We have nineteen more to contact, you crazy twins. Each of you pick a couple you want to give the good news to."
It was an hour and a half before we were done, and Hika headed to his internship and I headed to the office.

Afternoon, Conference Room, Black Onion Squad:
Four hours.
This entire group shouldn't have to meet in person very often now that the lawyers have enough to hammer out the contracts.
"Ootori-sama?"
My head swiveled towards Morimoto, and I cringed at my neck popping. I need a long run tonight to work all these kinks out. And maybe some female company…
"Do you have a preference for where in the building we give them space to set up?"
"No, but make sure they have a SCIF in addition to regular offices."
"Yes, Sir."
I leaned back and finished my water, trying to stretch my back without being obvious. The things the different heads wanted to argue about. It's a good think Morinozuka-san was here to help me cut through the bullshit.
Morinozuka-san? Do I call him senpai now that we'll both be at Todi? I dislike having to call anyone senpai. I'm the head of the Ootori Conglomeration, for fuck's sake.
Do I even need the degree?
Yes. Or the old guard that keeps such a tight grip on this country's politics will never take me seriously, richest man in Japan or not. They all thing I inherited it from Yoshio, not that I bought him out and ripped it from his hands.
"Ootori-san?"
I stood and faced the speaker. He's one of only two in the room that would use the -san honorific. The second being Ogata-san. "Morinozuka-san?"
"Thank you," he bowed his head slightly.
I bowed back, "You're welcome."
That was it. He left the room with Ishikawa, Oshiro, and their lawyer.
It was more than I expected.
"Ootori-san, do you have a few minutes for a private discussion?"
"Of course, Ogata-san."
Guess I'm not getting back to my office anytime soon.

Author's Note:
Almost didn't get this posted in time. Dad's home and we were watching a movie. Good thing I have an alarm on my phone for this. Inside man – good movie.
Proud of Ritsu for backing off and letting Bu be the boss. They work so well together. She's getting help, but they'll be minor characters. The remodel and setting up the new business will fade quickly with small updates. I'm trying not to let it take over their part of the story, but I'm having a lot of fun with it. I even wrote a business plan for the new syndicate. I know, I'm weird.
They're all getting so serious. And, like she said, sometimes they just want to be a teenager and maybe play kick the can. They'll be doing some fun teen things soon but remember the title of the story. There's some serious shit coming for all of them.
And Cho…damn, she's got game. That's one way to get a marriage contract going. And innocent Mori.
So, they're all going away for the marriage contract. That will be next chapter. Any requests/ideas?
Went into the strip clubs a lot here so I don't have to do it much later. We won't be involved in the remodels, but I'm going to be having fun with the openings. Can you picture all of them going? It's going to be a blast. No surprise she was heavy on security.
Tried a different type of 'round up' with the emails, phone calls, and texts. I'll use it sparingly, but it did a good job of quickly catching everyone up.
Part of the problem with the security review is I really want to write all of it. All the data gathering, analysis, and new procedures. I'll try to keep what I do brief, but I'm finding the whole thing very interesting. Probably write a few meetings like this one but spread out.
.
Next Chapter:
