Author's Note:
Welcome back to the 6th installment of "The Last Straw" series, or what has turned into the Ouran Soap Opera.
In a different time zone, so you're getting your Saturday night fix a little early. Don't get used to it. I'll be home for the next post.

The Painful Truth - Chapter 22: Silly Socks
.
Tuesday, October 11 (Continued):
After Classes, Petto Chinmi:
"I received these this morning," I poured toys out on the table. Honey and Cho went Sunday and messaged them over to me this morning. "There are three sets of gachapon toys here, all from other pet stores or pet supply companies."
Several of my employees reached out and started spreading the toys out, grouping them by set. One consisted of seven different dogs all wearing the company logo either on a shirt or their collar or something. The next was a series of cats playing on different cat trees. The third was the cutest in my opinion. Five dogs and five cats, all curled up in pet beds. The blankets had the company logo.
Honey and Cho included a note telling me how successful Bun Bun's toy sets were. "What would it take for Petto Chinmi to design, produce, and distribute a set of toys to different gachapon stores?"
"We should check with our advertising company. They would have a better idea if it's worth it. They'd also know how to tie it into the next ad campaign."
I gave Gorou-san the go-ahead for that and moved on to the first agenda item.
"Where are we on the lawsuit?"
.
I half listened to Sato-san updating us on what's going on in Seoul while I studied her. She looks better this week. A little more color in her cheeks. The scar isn't as prominent. I hope this week she feels good enough to start our breakfast meetings back up. The company is holding up without her, but I know she wants to be hands on, and frankly I miss her being around.
I focused back in when she asked, "The ads started going up yesterday. What's the response been?"
Our head of sales took that one. "There's been a seven percent uptick on website traffic and a four percent uptick on actual sales."
"Only four?"
"Keep in mind, Fujioka-sama, that not all the ads went live yesterday. Some of the newspaper ads won't go out until this weekend and the 'Dog's Life' one won't be until next month. Also, the ads at the different dog parks don't have the reach of anything on the internet, so results from those will be slower, but steady."
She nodded, "You're right. Makes sense." She's struggling to take notes with her left hand. Normally her neat handwriting flows over page after page in meetings. Now she's forming misshapen one-word reminders for herself. I can almost see the headache building behind her eyes.
"Anything else from sales?"
"We've had positive response and the grooming stations are making a profit. Do we want to go ahead and add them to other stores?"
"Grooming…" she trailed off, and we all watched as all the color drained from her face. "Excuse me…" and she walked quickly out of the room.
Several of us turned to the sales head, but I said it first, "What were you thinking bringing that up? It's only been two weeks."
He was staring at the door that just shut behind her. "I'm sorry, Tanaki-sama. I wasn't thinking." He shook his head, "Not thinking at all."
.
The door opening surprised me. They'd only just started the meeting thirty minutes ago.
Fujioka-sama headed straight for the front doors, and I followed her.
"Fujioka-sama, did you need to go somewhere? Do you need me to call Nagata-san?"
That's when I realized she was struggling to breathe. "Air," she gasped, her hand on her throat.
Nagata-san warned me about panic attacks but said he hadn't seen any since last week when she was locked in the car. What a stupid idea.
As I ran around her to open the door, I reported in over the radio, "This is Goto. We're headed for the front door. Panic attack."
"On my way." He's in the SUV in the parking lot, so he should be here in just a few seconds.
I pushed open the door and the cool air hit us both as she stepped outside. Leaning over with her hands braced on her knees, she took short, gulping breaths. It was painful to hear.
I don't know what the hell to do for a panic attack, so I did what I do for my wife when she's upset.
I reached out and gently laid my hand on her back then slowly started rubbing it in circles. "You're safe, Fujioka-sama. I'm here. Goto's here. Nagata-san's coming. Try to slow down. Try to concentrate on your breathing. Everything will be fine. I'm here."
"Haruhi-sama," Nagata whispered as he joined us, "I'm here. It's alright. Just breathe."
.
Stupid.
I'm at the office. Nothing's going to happen here.
Why am I panicking?
Chest tight.
Where am I?
Everything's gray.
"Just breathe. Slow down and breathe for me, Haruhi-sama."
Nagata?
"In…
"Out…"
I can't feel my lips.
"No…" It slipped out. Was that my voice? It's so scared.
"You're safe."
Am I?
Will I ever be?
.
It was only a couple minutes before she was breathing normally again. Maybe just a little quicker than normal, but nothing like she was when I arrived.
She straightened up and met my eyes, "Thanks." Goto-san removed his hand and stepped back.
"You're welcome, Haruhi-sama."
Her eyes darted around the parking lot, but no one was watching. My team kept anyone moving that wanted to stop.
"Well," she straightened her shoulders, smoothed her slacks, and stared at the front door, "now that I've embarrassed myself completely, I probably should go back to the meeting."
"You didn't embarrass yourself at all. You're recovering. It takes time." I still don't know what set her off. I'll ask Goto-san after we get her back to the conference room.
"Embarrassed or not, I need to get back."
.
As soon as she walked in, I stood and bowed deeply, "I apologize, Fujioka-sama. I didn't think before I spoke."
"Please sit. No apology necessary." She glanced around at all her department heads, "I'd like to apologize for leaving the meeting so abruptly."
"No apology necessarily," Tanaki-sama said, smiling slightly.
She gave him a small one back and took her seat. After two deep breaths, she turned to me, "Four more stores. Make sure they are spread around and not close to each other. Let's see if keeping it exclusive among our stores creates more of a draw."
"Yes, Fujioka-sama. I'll get right on that."
"Thank you. Please work with Tanaki-san. I'll ask for updates as I need them."
No kidding. I wasn't going to be sending her any reports. I like to think I only make mistakes once.
"Anything else?"
I swallowed hard. I do have another question, but will it set her off?
She saw the indecision in my face. "Please just ask."
Here goes. "You brought samples of baked treats back from the United States and were going to discuss working with Bun Bun's bakeries. Where are we on that?"
"Nuts," she grumbled and slowly wrote a couple words with her left hand. "I mentioned it to Honey, but we haven't discussed it in depth. I'll talk to him tomorrow night when I see him next."
Checking her agenda, she continued the meeting, "Next are the upcoming dog shows. We should be present at the same ones and add cat shows this year…"

Dinner, Mori/Honey Apartment:
"I'll be right back."
Nagata and I watched Haruhi head for the guest room that I've designated as hers. She brought some casual clothes to change into from her office suit. I'm hoping she'll become more comfortable here to leave some. Maybe I'll talk to Karou. He's always shopping for her. He can build a wardrobe here.
"She had another panic attack." My head whipped towards Nagata. "She came out of the department head meeting and headed out the front door needing air. Goto was on the door and followed her out and called me."
"Do you know what set it off?"
"No. He couldn't tell and when I tried to ask her, she changed the subject."
Another.
Just how often is she having them? How many has she had when there's no one there for her?
"It wasn't bad. Once she got outside and the cool air hit her, she calmed her breathing in a couple of minutes. Went right back inside and continued the meeting for another two hours."
I stared down the hallway to the guest rooms.
Nagata's voice brought me back to the moment, "I'll be waiting in the garage with the cars."
"No. You're dismissed for the night. I'll drive her home and my team can handle the trip." I don't see enough of her.
"Alright, Takashi-sama. I'll have her things moved from her SUV to your car. Please let her know I'll see her in the morning for the trip to Ouran."
"Of course."
.
I pulled the gray sweatshirt over my head and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror across the room. If Karou knew I owned these sweats, he'd shred them.
Doesn't matter. I don't go out in public in them. They're still perfectly serviceable. I don't need ten-thousand yen sweats to bum around in. That's just ridiculous.
That bed is so tempting. I wonder if I could sleep better here knowing Takashi's down the hall. Maybe I wouldn't see that creep with the knife in the dark. I'm so tired.
I carefully hung up my suit and went to find Takashi.
.
"I hope you're in the mood for Italian." I had it delivered from the best restaurant in town, but she doesn't need to know that. She looks like she's lost weight, and I wanted to tempt her.
"Sounds good as long as I can eat it with one hand."
"Ravioli."
"Perfect."
We ate in the informal dining area in the kitchen. Where we eat doesn't matter to me, and I know she's most comfortable there.
"What did you do today?"
Do I want to burden her with my problems? She has so much going on in her life.
"Takashi?" She gave me a small smile, "I want to know, or I wouldn't have asked."
"Hn." I took a sip of wine and dove in. "I spent the day with Ranka's accountants, managers, and lawyers working on the case against Lewis Dylan."
"Oh." I'm sure my face showed my disgust. "I'm sorry you're having to go through that."
"It's worse than we originally thought. He started embezzling from the first food order he made. He also took food and alcohol home. I don't think Yamamoto knew any of it."
"Well," she wiped her mouth and tilted her head, "I didn't know Lewis-san at all, but I got to know Yamamoto-san in St. Louis. For whatever it's worth, I don't think he had any idea about any of it."
"Thank you. That helps."
Things were quiet for a few minutes as we went back to our meals. The ravioli was a good choice. She's almost done, and I'm hoping she'll ask for seconds. I had the restaurant send over four servings just in case.
"Will the lawyers get a conviction?"
"Definitely. He wasn't careful."
"Good."
"What about your lawsuit?"
"The first trial starts November second. I'll be flying to Seoul with Petto Chinmi's lawyer and several other staff for the opening statements."
"You're traveling to Seoul?" Has she cleared it with security? Does she think she's flying on a commercial flight?
"I can see the questions and worry in your face, Takashi. I haven't talked to security yet, but it's on my list for my weekly meeting on Sunday. I'll have the hotel information for them then as well. It's still a couple weeks away, so they'll have plenty of time. We were going to fly commercial, but Chika's going to Seoul on the first for a board meeting, so he invited us along. I'm sure that will make security happy."
"Hn."
"I'm sure it will be fine."
Maybe I should go along. I'm not sure the courtroom will allow personal security, but they'd let me in.
"No."
Did I say that out loud?
"I can see your wheels turning. You do not need to go with me. I'll be in a criminal courtroom. There are guards and police. I'll have my security team, and I'm sure they'll bring extra. I'm not planning on going anywhere except for the hotel, the courtroom, and my lawyers' offices." She reached out and laid her hand on my arm, "You do not need to come. Besides," she frowned at me, "you'll be in your second week of university. You need to be in class."
Once again, I'll be leaving your security in other's hands, Haruhi. And every time I do…
"I'll be fine, Takashi."
But the haunted look in her eyes didn't convince me.

Evening, Out on the Town:
"What about that one," Cho-chan pointed to a jewelry store through the limo window.
"That's a commoner store. I'm not sure about the quality."
"It doesn't matter. You're not buying it there. We're just looking for ideas."
"OK," and I told the driver to stop the car.
.
Honey-kun helped me back in the limo, and we headed for the Ginza shopping district.
"I can't believe the biggest diamond they had there was three carats."
"You deserve so much more, Cho-chan." He kissed my cheek. "And they didn't even have any pink diamonds…"

Evening, Mori/Honey Apartment:
"Listen to the water running."
I watched her sitting on the floor in my meditation room. Her shoulders too rigid. Her face too tight. Her eyes closed.
"Deep breaths. Slowly."
I thought if she tried to meditate, she might be able to put her mind in a quiet place and get some sleep.
"Concentrate on the sound of my voice."
I've been doing this for so long, I've forgotten what it's like to begin.
"You're safe here. Relax. Let your mind float."
Her shoulders slumped slightly.
"Good. Count your breaths. In…
"Out…
"In…"
.
Out…
In…
Out…
Let my mind drift.
To what?
What am I supposed to be doing?
"Relax. There's no wrong way to do this. Stop worrying."
Is he a mind reader?
"Picture someplace calm. Soothing. Someplace you feel comfortable."
The library? The koi pond?
The koi pond.
I'm sitting at the koi pond watching the fish…
Wouldn't this be easier to just do at the pond?
"Keep your breathing slow and steady."
In…
Out…
In…
Out…
Koi pond. Watching fish.
That big orange one keeps chasing the others.
Around and around.
.
She's finally calming down. Not slumped forward, but relaxed. Her face is slack. The worry lines are gone.
"In…
"Out…"
I wonder where she's picturing.
Probably the koi pond.
.
Around and around.
The orange one.
The white one.
The yellow one.
Around and around.
I can see Koko sitting on the edge wanting to reach in.
Silly cat.
.
A small smile flashed across her face.
Good.
She's there on her own now.
.
The black and white one chasing the gold one.
In…
Out…
I can smell the plants. The flowers.
Around and around.
I reach into the container and toss them a handful of food.
Mad dash…they splash me.
.
Something's wrong.
She's breathing heavy.
.
No.
Stop.
Water.
They dumped a bucket of water on me.
My hand…
Hurts.
No.
"No…"
Was that me?
.
"Haruhi?"
She's brushing her arms. Like she's trying to get something off.
I reached out to gently shake her shoulder…
And she screamed.
.
Warehouse.
Knife.
"Don't touch me!"
My eyes flew open.
Takashi.
"Takashi…it hurts."
He's saying something, but I can't hear him.
"Take it out. It hurts."
The blood's pounding in my ears. I can't hear a thing.
I see his lips moving.
But I can't hear…
.
"Haruhi?"
Do I try to touch her again?
"It hurts."
She's holding her hand to her chest. It's like she's back at the warehouse.
"Takashi?"
She knows it's me.
I'll risk it.
I leaned forward and scooped her up into my lap.
She clung tight and burst into tears.
.
I'm not sure how long I cried, but his shirt's all wet.
Great.
Nothing like getting tears and snot all over your boyfriend to show him how pathetic you are.
"Do you want some water?"
I sniffed hard, "Yes, please." Where did that little girl voice come from?
He stood up slowly, keeping me in his arms. "I can walk."
"I know." But he didn't set me down until we got to the kitchen.
He opened the refrigerator for the water, but I saw something else. "I'd like tea instead, please."
He grabbed water for him and a tea for me. "Let's drink it on the terrace. The air will help."
I hate that the first thing I thought was security, but since he wasn't worried…
.
It was clear she was back in the warehouse. I want to know what she thought that took her there, but she wouldn't talk about it.
Now we're curled up on the terrace sofa, cuddled under a blanket. Her head's on my chest, and I can smell the cherry blossoms from her shampoo.
I wish she could stay the night. I want to hold her and keep the bad dreams away.
"I know you're hurting, Haruhi, but you're not alone. I'm here. I'm here for whatever you need."
She took so long to respond, I thought she might have fallen asleep. "Thanks, Takashi. I just want to be close to someone right now. Just for a while. Can we stay out here like this? Is that OK?"
"Definitely."
Anything for you, Haruhi.

Night, Mori/Honey Apartment:
Mitsukuni paused the movie as I walked in, "Did you take Haru-chan home?"
"Hn."
I flopped down on the sofa across from him and put my feet up on the ottoman. I'm exhausted.
She didn't want to talk about her panic attack, and I didn't push. I can only hope that she'll want to talk about it later. It doesn't even have to be with me, but she needs to talk to someone. Isn't her therapist helping her? Should she be having these attacks even with the therapy and medication? Maybe she needs to meet with her more than once a week.
"…getting better?"
I looked up, realizing Mitsukuni'd been talking. "Can you repeat that?"
"I haven't seen much of Haru-chan lately. Is she getting better?"
Is she?
"I don't think so." I took a deep breath and told him everything. All about the car, the board meeting stairs, the attack today at the office, and trying to help her meditate.
His eyes kept growing the more I told him, his grip on Usa-chan getting tighter.
"I don't know what to do. She won't talk to me."
"Haru-chan's so independent." I nodded. "But she's getting better. She's getting more comfortable in her new world. I think she'll reach out when she realizes she needs to."
"Really?"
"Yes."
He started the movie again and left me to think.
.
Once the credits started, I looked over at Takashi. He hasn't moved. Just sitting there staring out into space. He didn't even want to watch the movie. And it's one of Disney's best.
Maybe I can shake him out of it.
"Cho-chan and I looked at engagement rings tonight."
His eyes flicked over to me, and I gave him a huge smile. "We started at a commoner jewelry store, but they didn't have anything big and beautiful enough, so we headed for Ginza."
"Did you find anything?"
"We were only looking. She wanted me to know what she likes, but I still want to surprise her with it."
"Hn."
He's still off somewhere.
"I'm going back this weekend. I figure since the contract will be signed, I can buy it."
Vague nod.
I studied him from under my lashes. "You should come with me. Maybe you'll find something for Haru-chan."
That got his attention. He looked up at me like Chika-chan's right, and I am an alien.
"She doesn't want jewelry. Besides, I just got her that fidget ring."
"But girls like presents. When was the last time you gave her something before the ring?"
"Um…"
"Exactly. You need to give her gifts. Show her your romantic side. Maybe it will help her talk to you."
I pulled out my phone and looked up tomorrow on the calendar. Tama-chan had shared his calendar of all the special days with us. "Tomorrow is silly sock day. Send her some socks."
Yep. He definitely thinks I'm an alien with that look.
"I know she doesn't want the fancy, expensive gifts I give Cho-chan and Tama-chan gives Renge, but some cat socks, a black pair and a white pair…she'll like those."
.

Night, Phone call between Haruhi and Chika:
Chika: Why's she calling me so late. "Haruhi. Is everything alright?"
Haruhi: "It's fine. I just got back from dinner with Takashi."
Chika: "Oh. OK. How was dinner?"
Haruhi: "Ravioli. It was excellent."
Chika: Our glutton. Unfortunately, food's just about the only thing that puts a smile on her face since…
Haruhi: "I wanted to talk to you about lunch today."
Chika: "The donations for AJWRC were excellent. One of our highest so far."
Haruhi: "That's good, but that's not what I'm talking about."
Chika: "Oh…?"
Haruhi: "Koizumi-chan." I waited a moment, but he didn't say anything. "I know you're not interested in dating her, but she doesn't yet."
Chika: "What do I do? I keep turning her down…"
Haruhi: "Chika, I don't know what all girls want. We're all individuals. But I would want honesty. Be gentle. Be kind. But tell her you aren't interested in anything other than friendship…if you're even interested in that."
Chika: "I think I might be. She learned a bunch about karate and kendo for me, and we get along. I just don't want…anything else. If she's OK with friends, that'd be OK."
Haruhi: "Then let her know. I don't know her well, but I think she'd be fine with that. Just be clear."
Chika: "I can do that."
Haruhi: "The sooner the better if you want her for a study partner."
Chika: "Yeah, she's smart, and we do study well together." She's always thinking of others. Too bad I can't help her this easily. "I'll talk to her tomorrow. Thanks, Haruhi."
Haruhi: "You're welcome." I covered a yawn. "Good night."
Chika: "Good night."

Wednesday, October 12:
Breakfast, Suoh Mansion #1:
"Absolutely not, Tamaki."
"But Father…"
"No." I squared my shoulders and glared down at him, "Kasanoda-san and Himura-san will not be members of your wedding party."
He learned that pout from his mother. I shot her a quick glance and could tell she was thinking the same thing.
"That fact that I have to even explain why having a yakuza heir as a groomsman and a yakuza head as a bridesmaid concerns me. You should know better. And Renge-chan should definitely know better."
"We thought with Grandmother being gone and all the recent good publicity surrounding Shinobu…"
"No," I cut him off again. "I'm aware that certain arrangements have changed since Mother's passing and haven't said anything because different flowers and food don't matter. However, this country isn't ready for a Suoh wedding to include yakuza." I must remember just how young both of them are. "The prime minister will be there. The princess might even attend after the success of the ball."
"But…"
"Their presence on the On Okuri board and recent good publicity grant them an invitation to attend, but not to be included in the wedding party. Is that clear?"
It took a moment, but he finally responded, "Yes, Sir."
"Good. Now tell me about your co-op opening."

Lunch, Umeko's Tea Room, Morinozuka Estate:
"I'm happy you suggested this, Takashi. We don't spend any time alone anymore."
I suggested this lunch to Mother to discuss Haruhi and her recovery. Now I'm fighting guilt. She's right. We haven't had much time together lately. Not since St. Louis really. Not since Haruhi left, and Mother had to make me see sense.
"I approve of you asking Aoi to help with the interviews. A second opinion never hurts."
Yamamoto. What a disaster. I pride myself on my ability to judge character, and I failed. Though, I suppose it could be argued that I failed in judging Yamamoto's judgement of character. He was unaware of what his husband was doing, but that doesn't excuse him discussing private security matters.
"Now that you're going back to university, are you looking for anything different in an assistant?"
"Not necessarily. They will still act as the point person between me and my businesses most of the time. Prior knowledge of kendo will not be a deciding factor." I cut a piece of grilled fish and slowly ate it. "Although I believe I'll be looking for someone single this time."
She shook her head gently, "That's not necessary. You had a bad experience, but that doesn't mean you need to look for something that's completely different. Having an assistant with a wife may ground him."
I hadn't thought of that.
"Plus," she smiled, "you already have an apartment for a couple."
"It's not relevant. All the finalists are single."
"No, they aren't." She read the confusion on my face easily. All the resumes Aoi-san sent me were for single men. "Aoi and I added three more to the list for today. She was concerned you were eliminating candidates unnecessarily."
"I'll give every candidate fair consideration."
She nodded and sipped her tea. Mothers. They're always looking out for their children.
.
My son may think he has me fooled, but I know he wishes to discuss Haruhi-chan. He's been quite patient, but I'm noticing slight agitation as we get closer to the end of the meal.
I'll help him out. "How was your dinner with Haruhi-chan last night?"
What followed I was not expecting. Panic attacks. I knew she'd had a couple, but two in one day? How many is she having that she's enduring alone?
"If she won't talk to any of us, she needs to see her therapist more than once a week."
"Inoue-sensei hasn't brought it up to me, and she would as Haruhi-chan's guardian. But," I raised my hand to stop him interrupting, "I'll ask the next time I speak with her. It's possible Haruhi-chan isn't telling her about them."
"Haruhi's such a private person, it wouldn't surprise me if she wasn't."
We spoke at length about ways to help her, ways to make sure she knew she could come to us no matter what, no matter the time.
As our dishes were cleared, he asked about the fashion show on Friday.
"Your father and I will attend. We believe it's best to remind the public that we are her guardians and if the public or the press come after her, they are coming after the entire Morinozuka family."
My stoic son was fidgeting, so I asked if he was going.
"Kaoru has asked me not to."
"Really? What's his reasoning?"
"As the face of the line, he'll be escorting her on the carpet. That way he can handle any interviews and discuss what she's wearing. I'd be a distraction to her purpose there."
"Well," I sighed, "he's not wrong. She's there as part of her job, so it makes sense."
"I'll pick her up and escort her to the afterparty. I'll walk Ranka's carpet with her."
"That's appropriate. Akira and I will make an appearance at the party but will only stay briefly."

After Classes, Library/Study Room, Mori/Honey Apartment:
"Haruhi?"
"Hmm?"
She didn't look up from her laptop, so I tried again, "Haruhi?"
Her eyes flicked up to meet mine, "What?"
"We've advertised the other two model positions. Looks like in-person tryouts will be in early November. My line director wants you there for your opinion."
The room went quiet. Not that everyone was talking, but all movement stopped. All typing. All flipping pages.
I looked around at everyone, "What?"
"Kaoru," I turned back to Haruhi, "your director needs to talk to my agent. This is the stuff they're supposed to handle so we stay friends. Remember?"
Oh, shit. Right. Duh.
"Got it. I'll let Omigawa-san know."
"Thanks. If Inokuma-san thinks it's necessary, I'll be there."
I sent a quick email, and nearly fell out of my seat when Shinobu said, "My first gentlemen's club opens on the twenty-first. Anyone want to go?"
"Hell, yeah," Hika grinned, nudging me in the ribs with his elbow.
"Forget it, you two. You aren't eighteen yet, and I can't have the cops breathing down my neck. Gotta run everything above board there."
"What's the theme?"
"Techno, but you aren't eighteen either, Renge."
"I know, but I'm curious."
"Whatever."
"We could do a guy's night," Ritsu glanced up from his phone. "Akito? Tamaki? You in?"
"Techno isn't really my thing." Akito was trying not to look at Yuki. How sweet. The boss had gone scarlet and just shook his head.
"Well, Asshole and I will be there if anyone old enough wants to come." She leaned back and adjusted her eyepatch. When is that coming off? "And if techno isn't your thing, there are four others opening in the next two months." And she told us about the other themes.
"Heaven and hell sounds hot," then Hika laughed at his own pun, and I rolled my eyes at him. "Maybe we could rent a private room and do our birthday party there."
"Not a bad idea."
"Thought you'd like it, Little Brother." He really needs to stop that shit.
"But we all wouldn't be able to be there," Satoshi whined, but he has a point.
Hika just shrugged, "Then we'll have two parties."
"Well, I can't go, but I dare you to invite Honey and Cho," Renge smirked.
"No problem."
"Definitely."
That's when Yuki looked up from her notes, "Where are Honey and Cho? I thought they'd be here."
"You haven't heard?" She shook her head, so Renge continued, "They and all four of their parents and a bunch of lawyers are getting out of town to finalize their marriage contract. In fact," she looked at her phone, "their plane should have taken off about half an hour ago."
"How wonderful," Yuki clasped her hands to her chest like a fan girl in an anime. "I know they both want it so much."
.
Perfect timing.
"Yeah, that reminds me," I looked over at Tamaki and Renge, "Ritsu and I have decided we will not be part of your wedding party."
"Actually…"
My glare shut him up. "It's just not going to work. It's too political, and we're yakuza. I mean, for fuck's sake, I'm the head of a syndicate. I just can't be your bridesmaid. And," I smacked Ritsu's arm, "since we're married, he can't be in it either."
"But…"
"No," I practically growled, "you can't say anything that will change our mind. Your friendship means too much to us to jeopardize it."
.
Well, that solves that.
When he started to speak again, I kicked him under the table. "Later," I whispered.
"Thank you. Tamaki-kun and I appreciate your honesty and your position. We cherish your friendship too. But," I gave them a stern look, "you are still invited and we won't take no for an answer."
"Wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Not fair," Haruhi mumbled under her breath. "She gets out of the dress fitting."

Afternoon, Haninozuka Private Plane:
I wonder what those two are giggling about over there.
"Don't worry," Mei whispered. "It's a good sign. Shows they aren't worried and planning an elopement."
And that's why I left the office for two days despite several important current issues. I do not want them to elope. I do not want grandchildren without a contract and a marriage. I'll keep in touch with the office, if necessary, but this comes first.
.
My son is sitting at the front of the plane with his intended.
I wonder what they're laughing at.
"Stop worrying so much," my wife whispered. "If they're in such a good mood, they aren't worried about the contract. There won't be an elopement."
There better not be. My son and heir cannot disappear and come back married. The business would suffer, and the politics would be disastrous.
.
I hope those two can remain positive for these negotiations. The Cho family lawyer and I have met several times, once with the fathers, and do not have several sections of the contract finalized.
Fortunately, the business section is simple since we are not folding in any businesses from the Cho family.
Unfortunately, from what I've gathered from Kumi-sama, some of the more traditional sections are being called into question by Nomura-sama.
I'll probably be managing expectations as much as negotiations.
.
"Look at this one, Cho-chan," I held up my phone and played the video of the cat knocking over the houseplant.
"How adorable," she squealed, and held up her phone, "but you have to see this one of the bunny jumping up and riding on the dog's back."

Afternoon, Library/Study Room, Mori/Honey Apartment:
I finished writing up my notes from today's patients and submitted them to hospital records.
This short internship is harder than I thought.
Tokyo Main might be the premier hospital in Japan, but that just means we see the most extreme mental health cases. Suicide, schizophrenia, psychotic breaks. And I was not prepared for the level of violence.
And then there's counseling the crime victims.
When that young woman came in yesterday after having been pinned in her car for hours, for the first few seconds all I saw was Haruhi. But this time the woman's son died in the car accident. Died while she watched and could only reach him enough to hold his hand.
I don't think I'm cut out for something like that. I was patching them up just enough to last until they found a permanent therapist. Triage isn't what I want. I want to be that final therapist. I want my patients long term.
I turned toward Yuki-chan when she raised her arms above her head and stretched like a cat. Her top rode up, and I stared at the strip of bare skin across her stomach. Those hip bones…
"See something you like?" she murmured in a voice so sultry I'm sure she's been practicing it.
"Definitely," and I leaned forward and kissed those glossy lips. "Mmmm, what flavor is that?"
"Cotton candy."
"It's as sweet as you are."
"There are four guest rooms in this apartment, you two. Go find one," Hikaru grumbled.
"No shit," Ritsu chimed in.
Yuki-chan blushed a delicious pink and stood up, "Restroom," she mumbled. "I'll be right back."
With my report done and being in between classes, I really don't have anything to do. It's not like I own any businesses like the rest of them.
My eyes wandered over to Yuki-chan's laptop.
Photography lessons?
Interesting.
.
Boring.
This biology really sucks.
"Hey, Haruhi?"
She didn't even look up at Hikaru, "Mmm?"
"You and Cho did a great job decorating this apartment."
That got her attention. "Thanks, but all we did was help the decorator pick out the furniture."
"I'm sure you did more," Mori nodded in agreement, "but whatever." He leaned back in his seat, "I wanted to bring this up when Honey was here, but I'm sure he'll agree."
"To what?" Haruhi's voice was curious and cautious.
"How about we make this place our permanent Wednesday study and dinner spot." He and Kaoru hit Mori with those twin smiles, "What do you think?"
"It's a great idea, Mori-sen…Mori," Tamaki chimed in. "We can have dinner catered in from a different place every week. There's more than enough space for studying, and if we need a reference book or something, we can send a maid or assistant out for it."
"And we'd be able to leave stuff here rather than drag it around," Satoshi pointed to the storage cabinets.
He was hesitating, but we all knew it was a done deal when Haruhi smiled at him, "And when my hand's better, I can cook sometimes."
He gave her those eyes. "Then on behalf of Mitsukuni, I agree." He meant it for all of us but said it just to her. Shit, he's got it bad. So glad he finally pulled his head out of his ass after all that shit in St. Louis.
"Perfect," Renge pulled out a pen, "then let's make a schedule for who picks the restaurant and pays."

Dinner, Haninozuka Hot Spring Private Resort:
"Here's to a productive day tomorrow."
We all held up our glasses to Yorihisa's toast and sipped our wine (all except me, of course). Even Mitsukuni chose wine instead of something sweet. I'm not sure if his taste buds are changing because of the food Cho-chan's making him eat or if he's trying to impress her father.
Appetizers were served and conversation died.
I think her parents, Yorihisa, and I are being overly cautious about upsetting the kids. They've reassured us that they want this contract as much as we do.
The plates were cleared, and Mitsukuni spoke up, "Please don't worry so much." He met all our eyes, "Mother. Father. Daizo-san. Mei-san. Cho-chan and I want to be married. We want to be married with your blessings and a contract.
"I know we decided that tomorrow we'll start formally working on the details, but Cho-chan," he reached out and took her hand, "and I wanted to…"
"Set the tone tonight," she picked up when he faltered, "for the negotiations. We don't want to be confrontational, just tell you what we'd like to happen."
"Yes," he kissed her knuckles. "While we will be married no matter what, we want everyone happy. If we can all come together and be willing to discuss all parts of the contract, this will go well."
"We want to start with everything in the contract on the table." She smiled at Yorihisa, "I know some things seem nonnegotiable, but if every point in the contract is up for discussion, we'll make sure to listen and try to understand your opinions if you do the same for us."
So young. So hopeful.
They both sat there, their huge eyes flicking back and forth among all us parents.
Mei-san spoke up before Yorihisa or Daizo-san could ruin it. "That's an excellent idea, Nomura. I'm sure we all can agree to listen and respect everyone's point of view. After all," she waved her hand, taking in the entire table, "we'll all be family after the marriage."
My turn. "Then I suggest we all finish our dinner and relax tonight. Have a nice soak and prepare for tomorrow."
"I agree."
"Thank you, Mother."
"Yes, thank you."
Perfect. The mothers managed to get us through the first hurdle without the men messing it up.
I looked over at Mei-san, and she nodded.
We'll get us through tomorrow as well.

Dinner, Dining Room, Mori/Honey Apartment:
"I know we don't have a meeting scheduled, but can we talk about On Okuri for a few minutes?"
"Sure, Chika. What's up?"
"I've found new offices. There are enough individual offices to triple the staff if we need to, along with an office for every voting board member, two conference rooms, one that will hold the board, the other big enough for the board and staff. There's a meeting room that can be set for a formal meal seating up to a hundred people, a couple small enough for more intimate gatherings of up to thirty, and the ability to take down the walls between all of them for a larger event. It's the second through fifth floors of a current Haninozuka office building and has underground parking."
"Sounds great. How much?"
Oh, the look on his face. I can't say it. I'm one of them now. It's for good now. The Morinozuka's and this group are my family, and I must stop searching for the things that separate us. I'm on the board. This is as much mine as it is theirs. More so, if I'm honest with myself since I don't believe they'd have ever done it without me showing them the way.
"The Haninozuka real estate branch will be renting it to us for upkeep cost, but it isn't furnished."
"Whatever," Kaoru shook his head. "How much and where do I send it?"
Most of them have their phones out already. This group could take over the world if they wanted.
"Two-hundred-million [~$2 million] each."
I managed to not choak on air.
I don't have that. Not even close.
The only time I had that was when I sold the baby clothes company, and it all went to paying off that debt.
"Same account information as before. If you don't still have it, I'll email you."
Then he looked over at me. "Haruhi, if you don't have that much, please send what you're comfortable with."
What I'm comfortable with.
"If it helps, I'll be sending mine out of my trust fund." I caught Satoshi's eyes and understood what he was saying. I'm a member of the Morinozuka family. He's using that money, so I can use my fund too.
Takashi leaned close, "I'll be using mine as well. It's what Mother and Father gave it to us for. It's your money, not family money."
I took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. "I'll send the full amount, but someone's going to have to show me how."
"You got it," Chika grinned.
.
We were halfway through dinner when I couldn't take it anymore. "Akito, you and Yuki are happily engaged, so I know you aren't staring at my tits, so what are you staring at?"
He shook his head like he was waking up from some dream. Damn, he was off on another planet.
"Sorry," he blushed a cute pink. "Your ruby caught my eye and got me thinking."
"About what?"
"Well, clearly ruby is your signature gemstone."
"Yeah." I reached up and played with my dangly earrings. "Asshole's given me over a dozen different pieces by now."
"And they suit you." And he's blushing harder. Are we sure he's an Ootori? "I guess I was wondering if they were your favorite before he gave you the first one and if everyone here had a favorite."
Can't wait for this fucking eyepatch to come off. It's the eyebrow I can raise by itself.
"I don't think I had a favorite before, but ruby is definitely it now."
I locked eyes with Renge and could tell she was thinking the same thing. Men. Why can't he just ask Yuki what hers is?
"Tamaki-kun's given me several different pieces of jewelry with lots of different gemstones – sapphires, white diamonds, yellow diamonds, black diamonds, even a ruby. I like matching the stones to my outfit rather than having a signature."
"But you must have a favorite, my love," Tamaki leaned forward ready to pounce on the information. "I cannot believe I don't know what it is."
"Well," she's loving this, "I have a favorite stone and a favorite style. Unfortunately, I've never found them together."
Tamaki's practically panting like his dog waiting for a treat.
She smiled indulgently at him and put him out of his misery. "Black opal is my favorite stone, but I've never found it in vintage American jewelry."
"Oh, my love, I'll find it for you. I'll search the ends of the earth…"
She put her finger on his lips.
I feel like I'm watching a bad soap opera.
"It's my favorite stone because it's rare. I only have a pendant. I'd like matching earrings and maybe a bracelet, but no more. It's more special that way."
"Of course, my love. I'll find you the finest earrings made of the most exquisite black opals in existence…"
"They'd make a perfect wedding present." Damn. I should be taking notes.
"And they'll be yours for my bride."
They stared at each other for a few moments. I'm sure they forgot the rest of us are even here.
"Shit, Bu," he whispered in my ear, "makes me want to get you another ruby."
I turned and kissed him quick. "I just want you. Friday after the doc clears it, I just want you."
"You got me. Like you said, it's a life sentence."
.
Akito isn't fooling anyone except maybe Yuki, but this is a good chance for me to learn more about Haruhi. I know she doesn't want to be covered in jewelry, but she must have a favorite. Just one good piece?
I was just about to ask when Renge broke free of Tamaki's gaze and asked for me. "What about you, Haruhi?"
"A favorite gemstone?"
"Sure. You may not have ever be able to afford it, but there must be one you like."
She looked around at all of us but shook her head, "You'll laugh."
"Why on earth would we laugh?"
"It's not exclusive or anything. I just like it."
"Nothing wrong with that."
"OK," her eyes flicked over to me then back to Renge, "Jade."
Jade. Not hard to find and I'm sure I can get her a piece at a price she'll find reasonable.
"Jade's a great choice. And," Renge smiled, "it suits you."
Just as I was thinking about a shopping trip, she turned to me and said, "No."
No?
"Do not buy me any jewelry, Takashi." Her thumb started spinning her ring. "I have this. It's all I need." I must not have done a good job at hiding my disappointment. "However, perhaps something small for a special occasion." I started to smile. "A very special occasion."
"Hn."
.
Ug…Too much sugary sweet love in the air.
For the oldest here and a shrink, Akito's not good at hiding his ulterior motives.
Poor guy. I'll help him out.
"So, Yuki? What about you?"
Kaoru kicked me under the table and winked at me. I smirked back.
"Oh, I like them all as long as they go with what I'm wearing, but I like platinum instead of gold. Gold makes my skin look orange."
She's either a good actor or really didn't know what Akito was driving at. At least he looks like he got his answer.

Late Evening, Haninozuka Hot Spring Private Resort:
I came into the women's baths from the dressing room and found Kumi-san sitting on the edge, her feet dangling in the water.
"You're not having a soak?"
"Not tonight. I'm still quite full from dinner and don't want an upset stomach."
Mother came in behind me and stepped straight into the spring. "Reminds me of when I was pregnant with you, Nomura. Too warm and I'd get nauseous."
Then Mother and I looked at each other and then turned to stare at Kumi-san.
"Are you…"
"…pregnant?"
.
Do I deny?
We aren't ready to tell anyone.
Why didn't I think before suggesting the onsen? The doctor warned me about hot tubs and springs weeks ago. I knew I wouldn't be able to soak.
They're still staring at me.
But I want to talk to someone about the baby. Umeko's wrapped up in Haruhi-chan's recovery, as she should be, so there really isn't anyone…
"Yes?"
"Oh, my heavens," Cho-chan clasped her hands under her chin and bounced in the water, her towel almost coming undone. "That's so wonderful. When are you due? Is it a boy or a girl?" Then she suddenly stopped, "Does Honey-kun know? He hasn't even hinted to me."
"Well…"
"Nomura!"
"It's alright, Mei-san." I gave the girl a smile, "We haven't told anyone yet. Akira and Umeko accidentally found out during the kidnapping."
"How far along?"
"Right at three months. We were going to tell the boys next week."
"It's so exciting. Honey-kun and I will have a baby brother or sister." She's bouncing again.
"Nomura, I'm sure Kumi-san wants you to keep her secret until she can tell her sons."
"Oh," the bouncing stopped again. "I can do that. I can."
"Yorihisa and I will tell them Friday, that way you don't have to keep it for long. I'll invite the Morinozuka's over as well and tell everyone at once."
"That would be wonderful, except…" Now she's biting her lip. "The fashion show is that night."
I refrained from rolling my eyes, but just. Those kids and their schedule. "We'll do it over dinner. It's an evening event, right?"
"Yes. Dinner's perfect."

Late Evening, Mori/Honey Apartment:
"Why are we in my guest room?"
"It's a surprise," he said as he led me over to the dresser. I fought the idea of me taking a guest room, but finally accepted. It gives me a place to change out of my work clothes or uniform when I come over. I would have never felt comfortable doing that in his room.
"I got these for you," he said as he pulled open one of the top drawers.
Socks?
"Socks?"
And not just any socks. Kitty socks, fuzzy socks, sushi socks…
"According to Tamaki, today is 'silly sock day'."
"Of course, it is," but I smiled up at him. At my boyfriend.
At least it isn't jewelry.
"Thanks." I grabbed the black kitty pair and put them on.
.
When she stood up and wiggled her toes, I decided now was as good a time as any.
"Haruhi?"
She's standing in front of me, staring up. That tiny body that's been through so much. A hint of caution in her eyes, like she could tell she wasn't going to like what I'm going to say from the tone of my voice.
I reached up and cupped her cheeks.
"Can you talk about what happened last night?"
A shiver, but she didn't pull away.
"Your first experience with meditation…"
"Experience?" Now she did pull away. "I had a damn panic attack, Takashi. I'd hardly call that an experience." At least she's not walking away.
I'd waited until the rest were gone, until we were alone. I was surprised she wanted to spend any time alone here after last night, but she accepted my offer to stay and then drive her home.
I resisted the urge to reach for her again.
"Maybe if you talk about it, get it out of your system, then meditation would help."
"You want me to try that again?" she asked like I was insane.
"If I knew what happened, I might be able to keep it from happening again."
Her arms came up and wrapped themselves around her, protection from the subject matter. She looked around the room, "Not here."
"Where?"
She hung her head and trudged to the door, "Follow me."
.
I led him to the living room, to that huge sofa Cho and I picked out. Someplace I could curl up and not be close to that meditation room.
I plunked down in the middle of one side, and he took the corner, his head tilted slightly waiting for me.
He's so patient.
I practically bit his head off last night when he asked if I wanted to talk about it. All I wanted to do was get back…home. Get back home and hide. I'm glad I had the energy to call Chika. Gave me something else to think about when I was trying to sleep.
…didn't stop the nightmares, though.
I took a huge, shaky breath and blew it out. Maybe it will actually help if I talk about it. I'd much rather talk about it with Takashi than Inoue-sensei. He was there. He saw what they did. He saw where I was. She didn't.
Another deep breath. This one wasn't as shaky.
"I pictured the koi pond."
His face softened, and the corners of his mouth turned up slightly, "I thought you might."
"I tried to watch the fish. That big orange one that chases all the others?" He nodded. "I tried to picture him following them. Around and around."
.
She looked up into my eyes, pleading for me to understand. "And it was working. I could feel my heart slow down. I could smell the plants and flowers."
I didn't move. Did nothing to encourage or discourage. She's talking, and I don't want to stop her.
"I could see the fish. I could see Koko watching them."
It's almost like she's back there. A small smile when she mentioned the cat.
"Then I saw myself toss them a handful of food." She shivered and curled up tighter. What about feeding the fish could have set off an attack?
Her eyes focused back on me, "You've seen them when they're fed. They jump and splash." I nodded. Her voice dropped to a whisper, "Sometimes the water splashes me."
I still don't understand.
"I threw them the food, and the water splashed me. As soon as that water touched me, I was back in the warehouse." Watching the tears run down her cheeks and not comforting her is killing me, but I must let her get through this. "They were dumping buckets of water on me again."
Oh.
Of course.
She was wet when we rescued her. The doctors were worried about infection.
"It's like it was happening all over again."
Then she lunged into my arms, and I pulled her close.
.
I felt myself practically melt against his chest. His arms cocooning me.
I tried to breathe slowly. My heart's hammering.
Aren't I supposed to feel better now?
His voice rumbled through my body, "I'm sure the fountain running played a part in your panic attack."
The fountain. I forgot about the fountain.
I nodded slightly.
My stomach lurched when his hand left my back, but he was just reaching for the blanket on the back of the sofa. Within seconds, I was wrapped up tight, and our combined body heat was warming me up. I hadn't realized I'd started shivering.
"Thank you," he rumbled.
"For?"
"For trusting me. For talking to me."
I hugged him tighter. "Thank you for listening. I think I feel better."
He kissed the top of my head and squeezed me tighter.
For the first time in a long time, I feel safe.

Night, Mori/Honey Apartment:
Texts between Mori and Umeko:
Umeko: Is Haruhi-chan still there? Nagata said you'd be bringing her home and it's past 11.
Mori: She fell asleep.
Mori: I know she has Ouran tomorrow, but I don't want to wake her.
Umeko: It's obvious she hasn't been sleeping well.
Mori: She's peaceful now.
Umeko: Let her sleep. I'll send Honami-san over with her uniform tomorrow morning.
Mori: Thank you
Umeko: She's not in your room, is she?
Mori: living room sofa
Umeko: good night
Mori: good night
.
I looked down at Haruhi's sleeping face and knew I'd made the right decision. Her face hasn't been this relaxed since before…
After I wrapped us up in the blanket, we talked about random things with long silences between subjects. I was sure she'd fallen asleep several times, but then she'd ask a question.
She finally burrowed down to the point her head was on my thigh, and it was almost eleven before I was sure she'd finally dozed off.
I smiled at the kitty sock poking out from under the blanket.
There's no way I'm waking her up. She needs this.
I love her so much.

Author's Note:
This chapter had more in it than I thought, so I didn't even get to the marriage contract negotiations. Sorry. Next chapter, I promise.
So, two panic attacks for Haruhi, but she talked one of them out with Mori. They'll be getting better, but it has only been two weeks.
The group has settled on Mori/Honey apartment for their Wednesdays. They're getting too big and too famous to just show up at random restaurants, so I went with this idea. Doesn't mean they won't go out randomly.
Pregnancy reveal! She's at three months, so it's time to share the good news. What will be Honey's and Chika's reactions? Mori and Satoshi? Haruhi? It will be a fun scene to write.
.
Next Chapter:
Honey and Cho get a marriage contract…Chika talks to Koizumi…Date night for Yukito…Bu sees the doctor…Chika and the Alien get a sibling…and the fashion show…you'll never guess what Tamaki does…
