Update : Hey guys so I've updated this story completely because it was getting bleak and even boring that way so do reread this, it's the same au but from a different angle and direction. Also I've taken the liberty of changing some date of births of the characters so that some are close in age while others are a bit far away so that Anne gets time to breath.
Because I'm a sucker for organized charts and table thingies here is the table thingy, as I mentioned earlier this story is set more than 30 years earlier than the time Rilla of Ingleside is set at because no war, yayy. I changed the timeline completely but here ya go.It's 1880 in the first part of this story when it's actually 1910 in the original timeline. Also I completely changed some ages of the characters so you can refer to this whenever you feel confused.

I'm really stupid I mean who writes 5 stories and then starts another. But I have a schedule for their posting time's worked out and I had this idea while reading Kim Blythe's One Heart, One Love, One Family. In this story there is no war. There is only a war of hearts, of friendship and young love. I hope that it doesn't turn too boring. Enjoyyy!
I've edited the ages quite a bit but there it is.
" They say, home is where the heart is. But that's not where mine lives." From London Boy by T.S
"When will we reach??!!"
The auburn headed boy looked up from his book and grinned at the girl sitting next to him.
"I dunno, why don't you ask the train operator?" he winked at her as she rolled her eyes at him.
"I might just do that." she observed after a moment, getting down from the seat and extending her hand towards the compartment door.
"Oh no, you can't, Faith!" Di Blythe spoke up loudly, looking horrified at the idea.
Ignoring her, the so called Faith made her way through the open door and she would have certainly succeeded in doing what Jem had said- no one could say Faith Meredith wasn't stubborn- but someone entered the compartment bumping into her, and all thoughts were immediately forgotten as she scrambled up from the ground, accepting Walter's sincere apologies.
"Why were you running?" Nan Blythe peered at Walter from beneath her lashes, distrustfully. "You never run."
"I... umm -It was... I was erm..." Walter stuttered uncomfortably, fortunately saved by the arrival of another lad entering the compartment uninvited.
"I suppose I can provide that bit of information." Ken Ford grinned in a way that could make every lady or sometimes lads swoon at his feet, but the Ingleside crew were fully immune to his charms.
"So...??" Jem asked curiously as Walter flushed even a deeper red.
"He might have had an encounter with Trisha Pye.
"Oh no, not that girl again." Nan groaned as Faith exchanged a look with Di.
"What did she want?" Di, the more sensible one of the twins, asked.
"Well." Ken smirked slyly. "She might have hinted for Walter to take her to the reception next week and he might have rejected a bit too bluntly."
Both Nan and Di covered their heads with their hands, groaning simultaneously while Faith tried not to laugh. Besides her, Jem winked at her again, choking with laughter himself.
"And he may or may not have a crowd of girls following him now." Ken continued, aware of the commotion he was causing.
At this everyone burst into laughter, as Walter glared at them darkly, muttering something about being supportive family and all that.
Jem who was as oblivious to girls and their mannerisms as his mother had once been, peered at Ken confusedly.
"Why were they following him?" he asked curiously.
"Oh Jem, you silly. Trisha Pye has been spreading rumors all about that Walter is her beau." Nan wiggled her eyebrows as Walter hid his bright red face in his hands.
"And since no one dared to go against her, they accepted her word and didn't even dare to look at him. And now, seeing as Walter rejected her in front of everyone, they think they have a chance with him and every one of them is following him around, hoping he'd ask her." she giggled again as Jem looked even more confused if that was even possible.
"But why do they want to go with him?" he asked again gazing at Walter curiously. He couldn't imagine why the girls would be interested by Walter's poems and fanciful speeches. They all enjoyed hearing them in Rainbow Valley but he knew his brother was shy and he wouldn't want to mingle with all those girls. Then why were they making him uncomfortable??
"You're just as much clueless as those girls." Nan retorted.
"Urgh Jem, can't you see?? Walter is by far the handsomest boy in Queen's and they're all falling over him in hopes that he'll take one of them to the reception." Faith snapped.
Walter lifted his head slightly when he heard Faith say that he was handsome. Faith was the absolute ideal of beauty, his ideal. She never noticed him in that way but he had dreamed about her in hopes that remained rather feeble.
He didn't look at Jem because if he did, he would have been astonished.
Jem's calm and good natured expression was twisted into something unrecognisable. Confusion, hurt and jealousy? Jem didn't know that himself, of course he didn't. He just felt a sudden ache, kind of a twisted pain in his heart when Faith had called Walter handsome. But Walter was handsome, he knew that. Miss Cornelia and Susan and sometimes even Mother and Father remarked on how handsome Walter was.
But why did he suddenly feel this weird gnawing at his heart? To disguise this sudden feeling, his face took on a sly and coy expression.
"And what's your opinion, Faith. Who's the handsomest Blythe, do tell?"
She scoffed.
"As if I'm going to answer that"
He raised an eyebrow. "So you do think it's me."
"No I don't." she retorted, sticking her tongue out at him.
"Do tell then."
"Yes, do tell Faith." Di and Nan edged on as Ken and Walter stared from the corner.
"Shirley." Faith replied instantly, smirking slyly while Di and Nan grinned. Walter sighed in relief while thinking at the back of his mind that it wouldn't have been too bad if she had indeed picked him.
Jem, meanwhile looked crestfallen at her response, though schooling his featured into that same sturdy expression.
Before someone could say anything, there was a crash and a freckled face appeared on the side of the door.
"Jerry, here you are." Jem all but dragged him in, not seeing Una slip in with him. But that was alright. Una was used to people not noticing her, and it didn't matter anymore. She stood on the edge, when someone whispered in her ear, almost making her jump in terror.
"It's me." Walter smiled warmly and she felt her heart beating more fastly.
"Hello." she replied shyly.
Meanwhile Nan inclined her head the other way as soon as Jerry came in.
Di copied her twin, pausing to glare at him darkly before whispering something in Nan's ear. Jerry, in his defence, passed an apologetic glance at Di before politely muttering Good day to Nan and took a seat besides Jem.
"Quarrel again?" Jem asked Jerry sympathetically and loudly, as Faith glared at him to shut up.
Jerry nodded in assent while Nan still kept her head faced the other way.
The mist on the window loomed up and down before clearing in the spots where Nan and Jerry's reflections could be clearly seen. Behind them Walter and Una were deep in conversation, not noticing how their future was being hinted. And the small spot in the middle was being occupied by the faces of Jem and Faith, looking anything but happy at the awkward silence. The sun came in and the reflections slowly erased, not before both the Blythes and the Meredith's could feel something being written for forever in their destinies.
