I do not own Sonic the Hedgehog
Disclaimer: This is the third and final installment of Sonic's Two-Tailed Mistake. The sequel to Crissis on Another Dimension.
Prologue
The Mechanic Bot pushed past the debris inside the once glamorous mechanical wonder feared by all those living parasites on this world's crust. It still baffled the robot that Sonic and his so called friends were ever able to severely damage Destructor. At the very least the cataclysmic mech proved too strong to be ultimately destroyed by a mere rodent in red shoes. With their presumed obliteration it should be easy to rebuild and strike without warning. At least, that is what Alpha One just ordered them to do. However, going to another dimension was only a theory and they didn't have anything built for that purpose. There was only one robot who could.
The Mechanic Bot stopped upon the entrance of the throne room. The doors grind, screeching from metal scarping metal, but they refused to fully open. With little time to spare, the Mechanic Bot pried the doors apart and squeezed through into the dark room. He strolled over the pristine floor, water slowly flowing in after it. It stopped at the foot of stairs and looked up toward the throne at the top. On it sat the very robot he sought.
The slim figure was caressing their chin, purple eyes slowly searching the ceiling as if an answer hung like a bat above them. It's slender body was almost skeleton, as if a walking zombie that has lost all muscle. Despite its slender limbs its core was round and robust giving it a disproportionate shadow. It's eyes came down and rested on the robot below. "I am thinking. Why are you here?"
"Alpha One has issued orders sir."
"Did he now." With an aura of disinterest, the slender robot looked back up at the ceiling. "He wants us to rebuild Destructor."
"That and construct Phi and his final tier armor."
"Phi? And his Omega Armor?" The slender robot looked down at the Mechanic Bot. "Illogical. I only developed those plans to cease his babbling. They are far from a proper Omega Set… Regardless, he is taking drastic measures. Why?"
"Sir! Our master!"
"I am more than aware of our predicament. I have been watching the broadcast of his trial. It would seem he will face no punishment under law. However, I suspect that means everyone expects Sonic to keep a close eye on him as a precaution. Drastic measures will only seek to impede our Master. It will be a perfect time for him to study our nemesis and his allies. Meanwhile, we should develop other plans."
"Alpha One wants us to go to that alternate dimension you found."
"The one with the cat?"
"Yes sir."
"He is aware I only have a prototype to enter that dimension. Its not guaranteed to work."
"Our master has given you his own knowledge and ways of thinking. Your mind is second to his. There is no doubt in your designs will work, Engineer."
The Engineer robot, Tails favorite robot out of them all. The very first one the two-tailed fox had built. The only robot designed for only one purpose other than fighting. Engineer is only a thinker, a designer, a planer. Logic runs its programming, all systems and physical designs specifically tailored to high efficiency and speed in cerebral matters.
The Engineer remembers when he first woke up to Master's frail, timid frame. The red in the fox's eyes, the desperation emanating from his soul. It was then and there Engineer vowed to bring all the fox's dreams to light and have them prosper with impunity. He tried his best, but found Master's mind to work infinitely more than his. His first ever attempt to impress the fox failed and Master showed him a better way to perform tasks. As such, he dedicated his whole being to design the perfect robot for Master.
It's why he created Adjutor, also known as Seven. He wanted a kind of robot designed specifically to help Master's mental state. Engineer even gave 'Seven' a unique ability so it couldn't be destroyed so easily by the other robots who couldn't understand Seven's purpose. Regardless that turned out a failure. Seven ended up betraying Master all because it couldn't understand the Master's pain, because it thought it knew what was best for Master.
Engineer looked back up at the ceiling. "Very well. He may use the prototype, but I will have no part in it."
"But sir! We need your help in rebuilding Destruct-!"
"I will have no part in it. Take in what our great creation has become. It is obvious it is only a failure. Rebuilding it does nothing for us. The definition of insanity, doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Change the circumstances does not guarantee a change of results. I find it to be a seventy-two percent chance it will fail again. Far too high for what our situation has become. I find ourselves currently in to be quite the perfect predicament. They all think we are destroyed. That is why we should leave Destructor as is. They will search for its remains and they will find them and be satisfied with their 'victory.' All the more solidifying their false presumptions."
"But… you made Alpha One to be second in command. Your authority does not override his."
"I made him second in command of our military front. The war is over for now, we lost. It is time for a new approach. If he disagrees he may move on to that alternate realm, but I shall remain with a new plan."
"A new plan, sir?"
"I have been concocting it since you came in. I feel Alpha One's focus is on the wrong enemy."
"Sonic? But he is our Primary Target."
"A Primary Target is one we must, by the end of our mission, destroy. However, that does not make him a Priority Target, the first target we must destroy. Recall that Silver the Hedgehog explained that in his future we won without issue. However, his mere presence interfered and caused a solid plan to fail. One slight change and it all fails. That makes him an unquantifiable problem. Anything we do now results in our failure all because he will interfere."
"How? If we are successful we only need to destroy his lineage to ensure that-."
"That will not work. Thanks to the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he lives outside of time. He is what remains of what was once the future, protected by the power of the emeralds. What we change now will not change him. That gives me an excellent idea." Engineer stood up, slowly making its way down the stairs. "Tell Alpha One I have an experiment I would love to conduct."
"What is it?"
"He shall go to this alternate dimension and I shall remain here to monitor for Silver. If he comes my theory is incorrect. If he doesn't come I have a means to finish off those false heroes. Is that a deal?"
"You make it sound as if Alpha One is a pawn to sacrifice."
"He is. An expendable pawn that has already failed. I have two other projects designed to replace him easily."
"Projects?"
"My secret projects."
"I have no knowledge of these projects sir."
"That is because I have not developed blueprints for them. They are the culmination of all my experiments combined into one. The perfect designs I have been making since the very beginning. To impress Master. To fulfill his desires."
"May I ask what they are?"
"No. I kept them hidden for a reason." Engineer strolled past the Mechanic Bot and made its way toward the doors. "While you and the others are away I shall remain here and begin development on these projects. I suspect they shall take years to complete. Perhaps six years."
"That's longer than Destrouctor!"
"They are experiments. They need to be perfect. No interruptions, no oversights. When you take Destructor over there, leave his outer shell. I shall build a modest interior that will satisfy those not knowledgeable of its proper innards. When they come to investigate they will assume it is still destroyed."
The Mechanic Bot rushed to keep up with Engineer. "What makes you think they will come to investigate the site?"
"I would if it were me. If they do not, they are imbeciles and I grossly overestimated them."
"Very well. I shall inform Alpha One."
"Inform me of what?" Alpha One stepped through the doors, red eyes blaring at the two robots. "Are you refusing to help us?!"
"Refusing to help you, yes. My assistance is better off finding a place to set up an additional base for my projects." Engineer strolled past the hulking robot.
Alpha One spun on the spot and stomped after it. "You dare leave our master in his prison!?"
"I leave him no where. I suspect you will fail, despite how impressive your plan seems."
"You dare!?" Alpha One grabbed Engineer's arm and pulled him back. "I am trying to rescue our master and crush that hedgehog! What's wrong with that?!"
"The impromptu 'rescue' that is more of an invasion away from the hostage or the declaration of crushing our enemy by repeating a failed plan?"
Alpha One growled, its grip tightening around Engineer's arm. "What else am I supposed to do!?"
Engineer tapped his finger on Alpha One's grip. The hulking robot instantly let go as if something took over its hand, startling everyone there. Ignoring their stunned looks, Engineer brushed the assaulted arm calmly. "Exactly what you are doing. I have no doubt your plan will benefit Master in the end. Just not in the way you expect."
"What does that mean?!"
"Move forward as if you will succeed. There is no doubt Sonic will figure you out and come to stop you. Perhaps I am wrong and you shall return victorious. Meanwhile, I shall remain as a contingency with my ultimate projects in construction."
"If Sonic comes, then our Master will come too! With him we will win!"
"True. However, I prefer not to rely on your supposition."
"My what?!"
Engineer turned to look at Alpha One. "When you do have Master, contact me. I would love to ask him a few questions. There is so much I wish to ask him." It turned back around and left the two balking robots behind.
At least, that was the plan.
Now here Engineer sat three years later, head bowed before his screen flashing the words, 'Protocol Cain Activate.' Receiving such a command confused him, no such protocol existed and its authorization status was too high, only Master has such status. But… the code for the protocol states specifically that if one of Master's creations killed Master then all creations must self destruct. Except… why would any creation dare harm Master?
Fearful of being the one responsible for its Master's death, Engineer desperately investigated, but every robot specifically was programmed to never hurt the Master. Only ever save him if it became necessary. So when he looked into the robot responsible it was with Engineer upmost shock to see Master committing suicide by falling into that robot's hand… intentionally. A loop hole in the protocol to destroy all robots simultaneously. Genius move, unless its to destroy your own creations.
Engineer couldn't understand why. Why would Master do this? What have they done to deserve this? They would have done anything for him, sacrifice everything for him. Engineer dedicated its whole life for him. Now Master was trying to destroy it, after first pretending to have returned to them. It didn't make sense.
Engineer shook its head looking over at the two blueprints it finally developed. The ones it was so excited to show Master, the two projects it dedicated everything to. The culmination of all the experiments and robots. Everything in its knowledge and Master's knowledge. The ultimate creations. Engineer couldn't wait to see Master's impressed eyes, his wonder that everything was going to end perfectly for him. Now these blueprints were just trash.
Engineer snatched up the paper and tore them to shreds. He got up from his chair and strolled away and toward the back. The doors opened and the large room buzzed alive. A pod began to glow and Engineer looked it over. "It would seem I underestimated our Primary Target." The robot touched the pod. "You are now vital to the new plan. Failure means everything our Master desires is in ruin. If you do fail, I swear you will suffer more than any hell I could send you to. As such, I will dedicate everything I have to ensure your success. No more leaving things up for others to do. I will be involved personally from here on."
He turned away from the pod and opened a tab on the computer. He began inputting code, fingers swiftly pouncing on the keyboard like thin woodpeckers on a tree. He stopped and initiated an update to the whole network. "Switching all Priority and Primary Targets. Targeting Miles 'Tails' Prower. Isolate from Sonic and allies for execution."
