NA- Dose anyone read these things?
Eh well, this time Cody talks to his General Jedi Obi-wan about Hunters abilities.
Chapter 4 Sense
Cody shook his head and tried to keep a smile form his face as he watched the cadets laughing and joking as they made their way back to where they were meant to be. He saw a brotherhood between them that sometimes didn't happen between Troopers until had been together for years.
He looked to General Obi-wan Kenobi who stood beside him on the cat-walk overlooking the young clones. The Jedi stood with his arms crossed while one hand stroked his beard. It was a habit that his General had when thinking.
Having informed the General of the odd batch of clones, Cody wanted to know Obi-wan's thoughts.
"They all have enhanced skills?" Obi-wan asked.
"I would call them Abilities," Cody said, "Eyesight, Strength, Intelligence, and something very akin to your Jedi senses."
"That is interesting." Obi-wan said, "Are they undergoing Training for these abilities?"
"Other than normal Cadet training it doesn't look like it." Cody told him, "Definitely not with CT-9901, Hunter."
"Which would explain his confusion, when the energy storm hit the city," Obi-wan said "I was watching that training session alongside Shaak Ti, I did not notice any use of the Force at the time but, as you said it may not even be Force related." He looked down at the data pad reviewing the files the Tech had sent.
Cody couldn't help but be impressed with the young clone's skills to slice systems he was not supposed to be in…
"I believe, I would like to speak with Hunter." Obi-wan said to Cody. "If he has enhanced skills, he may need guidance in how to utilize them."
Cody nodded his head. "Of course General," He was pleased to make that happen.
"I can't believe they just grounded him after the incident…" Obi-wan said softly shaking his head.
"Sir?"
Obi-wan shook his head and smiled. "Maybe I just have a soft spot for clones." He said, "You and your brothers are more than just tools to me."
Cody nodded his head with a smile. It was one of the reasons his loyalty lay with the general. Why his trust was 100% with Obi-wan. He could not fathom ever seeing a reason to stop trusting him.
"Shall I set up a meeting for you General?" Cody asked as the young clones separated, leaving Hunter standing there as if waiting for something. If he was quick, he could catch the young clone before he headed off.
Obi-wan smiled at him. If he had been General Skywalker, Cody would have not been surprised to see him jump from the balcony to land in front of Hunter. But Obi-wan had more class then that. He chuckled at Cody.
"No need Cody." He said, "I'll meet with him now since he seems to be waiting." The general nodded down to Hunter whom Cody realized was looking up at them. Watching the Jedi walk to the stairs at the end of the Cat-walk, Cody knew Obi-wan never felt the need to show off.
Hunter waved good bye to the other three but he did not leave to meet up with 99 right away, although he knew the old clone would be waiting for him. He could see the two above on the cat-walk easily enough, Cody and one of the Jedi Generals. He waited a moment to see if either would come to talk to him.
He wasn't surprised when he looked up and saw the Jedi looked down at him with interest. There was something about him that told Hunter to wait where he was. He wasn't disappointed when the General along with Commander Cody came to intercept him.
Hunter had never been close to a Jedi before; He heard stories of course, like all the cadets. But meeting one up close and personal wasn't something Hunter had thought much about until he was standing before the General.
There was something about him that Hunters senses were picking up on but it was hard to tell what it was. General Kenobi stood with his hands on his hips but an easy smile on his face. Hunter cocked his head to the side and his eyes fell on the light-sword at the general's hip. All Jedi had one; Hunter had never seen one up close before…
"Interested in my Lightsaber?" The General asked as he unhooked it from his belt and held it out to Hunter.
Hunter found he felt the energies coming from it, He reached out a hand but did not touch it, "It's not like a blaster." He said, "The energy is there, waiting to be used, not charged up in a battery."
"You can sense that?" General Kenobi asked.
"It's strange." Hunter said and pulled his hand back. "It's like its waiting…sleeping.
General Kenobi looked at the clone as he stared at the lightsabre. "I never heard a clone describe it like that before." It was almost a Jedi response. He took the lightsabre in hand and activated the kyber crystal.
The soft blue light emitted from the sword maid the clone's eyes narrow in a squint. "It's an impressive weapon," He said.
"But one you don't feel a calling too." The General told him rather then asked.
Hunter looked past the blue light to the Generals face, "No…" He finally said. "I don't believe I sense it the way you do." He told the General.
Obi-wan chuckled. "What else do you sense?" He asked looking to Hunter.
"There's a pull to it," Hunter said frowning, "like it's trying to…I don't know, like a magnet but not for metal but energy." He looked to the General. "What does it feel like to you?"
"The energy of a kyber will call to another kyber crystal, which is probably what you are sensing." Obi-wan smiled, "But I can hear the song," He cocked his head to the side. "It 'feels' like an extension of myself." He told Hunter honestly. "Like it is a part of me and I it."
Hunter nodded his head slowly as he understood even though he did not feel that connection as General Kenobi described it.
The General smiled and the glow of the lightsabre disappeared. Hunter blinked his eyes again as the light was no longer hurting them.
"Walk with me Hunter." The general said.
Hunter bit his lip as he thought of old Ninty-nine waiting for him.
As if reading his mind General Kenobi smiled. "Commander Cody can send a message to anyone waiting for you?" He nodded to his Commander.
Hunter looked at the older clone and nodded his head. "Just, Let Ninty-nine know I'll be late?" He asked.
Cody nodded, "Easily done."
General Kenobi nodded his head and smiled at Hunter. "Shall we?"
Hunter nodded his head and Fell into step beside the General. As they walked Hunter got a sense for the Jedi, he had a feeling he was being assessed by the General in turn.
Finally it was Hunter who broke the silence, "You don't think I'm a Jedi." He said.
General Kenobi smiled. "And neither do you." He said.
"No." Hunter said.
"Can I ask why you are sure of that?" Kenobi asked.
Hunter raised a brow at him, "I've heard stories of Jedi." He said. "Moving things with their mind or leaping incredible distances…" He shrugged, "I can't do any of that."
"But you have heightened senses, like a Jedi." General Kenobi said to him. "Senses you sometimes have a hard time interpreting, I believe specialized training will help."
"Are you going to oversee my training?" Hunter asked.
"I don't think I will be able to give you the time you need, But Shaak Ti is an accomplished master and in charge of the clones training." Kenobi told him, "I will speak with her; she may already have suspicions of her own." He chuckled softly. "Either way I believe we can give you the tools needed." The General said.
"Will I be able to be part of a team again?" Hunter asked.
"Do you want to be?"
"Yes, But not my old team."
Kenobi smiled at him. "You wish to be teamed up with the other 99s." He said. "Cody informed me."
"Can you make that happen?" Hunter asked and The General looked to Cody who stood off to the side.
"I can certainly try." He said as he reached out and placed a hand on Hunters shoulder. "But you are the only one who can put the effort in Hunter. Your determination and willingness to push yourself will take you further than anything I or anyone else can do."
Hunter looked at the hand on his shoulder before nodding his head and smiling. "Thank you General." He told him, "I should get back to Ninty-nine."
"Of course," Kenobi said stepping back.
Hunter moved to leave but stopped and looked back at the Jedi. "General," He said. "Tell your lady friend, she has nice taste in perfume." He saw the sudden blush on the Generals face before hurrying off.
"Lady Friend?"Cody asked raising an eyebrow at the General.
Obi-wan Kenobi's ears turned red and he cleared his throat. "Don't you have work to do?" He asked when it was clear the Commander was teasing him.
"Sir, Yes sir." Cody grinned and gave his General a salute.
Kenobi shook his head as he watched Hunter hurry off to find Ninty-nine. That boy was an odd one, and if he hadn't been tested, Obi-wan would have thought him a force wielder. He needed to talk with Shaak Ti, training as a Jedi or at least some parts of it would definitely help the young clone.
The General stood there for a moment then sniffed cuff of his shirt, the scent of the Duchess, Satine Kryze perfume was very faint. He breathed it in and sighed before starting his shoulders and pretended he had not just done that.
Hunter hurried back to Ninty-nine, he felt a little bad for leavening him to do the job alone, but he felt good for connecting with clones that felt as he did.
Misfits, delinquents, defects, bad batch.
It made sense that they had the same 9900's CT number. Clearly something had happened with his batch mates. As he hurried back to the janitorial level Hunter wondered if there was any other 9900's. Maybe he would have Tech look into it.
But for now he was more than pleased with himself. He hadn't thought he would get a team again after he had been demoted. Hunter knew it wasn't a done deal but he had some hope now, and maybe he could be trained to help him with his enhancements.
Ninty-nine looked up as Hunter hurried to his side. The old clone smiled at Hunter and handed him a mop. Taking the mop Hunter sighed softly but nodded his head.
"Sorry for ditching you earlier." He told the old clone.
Ninty-nine chuckled softly, "Did you have fun with your brothers?" he asked.
Hunter cocked his head to the side looking at Ninty-nine as he worked. Ninty-nine called all clones brothers, but had he put a little more enfaces on the word then normal? He wasn't sure but he did smile.
"I think I'm gonna get back on a squad." He told the man then bit his lip. "Not that I don't like working with you."
Ninty-nine chuckled, "You're a soldier, I know being here with me isn't as fun." He told him.
Hunter cocked his head to the side. "You know most of the clone brothers?" He asked.
"I know all my brothers." He told Hunter, "I got a soft spot for the ones that don't fit in."
Hunter nodded his head. Ninty-nine had always been kind to him. Had even taken it upon himself to help the young clone out when he had washed out as a cadet. The other clones on the janitorial staff were not nearly as old as Ninty-nine nor were they as kind hearted.
As they worked, Hunter pushing the mop around the floor, He thought back to the fist day he had been to work with Ninty-nine.
Weeks earlier…
Hunter was angry, more at himself than anyone else, although a close second was his so called team mates. He hadn't ment to fail them all by passing out. But the rest of the team had blamed him, even the instructor blamed him. Saying he just didn't have what it took to be a soldier.
He had tried to keep his tears at bay as he sat in the locker room, changing out of his training gear back into the red and gray uniform all cadets wore. His Uniform however was gone; in its place was the light gray jumper that the janitorial staff wore.
The instructor had told him flat out, the moment he had woken up hours later in the med bay that he was out and no longer a Cadet.
It had been unfair, but everything about life as a clone was unfair. He felt numb as he had changed into the gray uniform. The medical staff had discharged him, they were almost sympathetic but since they couldn't find anything wrong with him other than a few bruises when he had passed out, they wanted him out of there.
He had felt numb as he walked the corridors to the lower decks, It wasn't like they owned anything, clothes were provided, they had sleeping cots assigned, and his was no longer among the cadets.
Hunter wasn't sure what he had been expecting when he had entered the locker room where all the Maintenance Duty Clones stored their gear. There was some other Maintenance Clones in the locker room but they didn't even look up at him. They looked normal, at first glance, but it was clear that they went soldiers.
They didn't have that spark that made a clone a soldier. Hunter wondered what had sent them here but he didn't ask. They ignored him and he wasn't about to give them his life story, short as it was. He just stood there feeling confused and lost when old Ninty-nine came into the room.
Ninty-nine was a little famous, disfigured but always kind. He stopped to talk to each of the clones he passed, but they were too far away for Hunter to hear anything. It wasn't until Ninty-nine shuffled his feet towards Hunter did he take notice of the old clone.
"I got a message saying we've got a new brother." He looked at Hunter, "Oh, You shouldn't be here…" He said softly with a sad sigh.
Hunter couldn't help but look away feeling ashamed, Ninty-nine reached out and placed his hand on Hunters shoulder. "It's all right little Hunter." He said. "Stick with old Ninty-nine, I'll show you the ropes."
Hunter felt the sting of tears in his eyes again, he squeezed them shut, willed them away. Ninty-nine reached out and pulled Hunter into a hug. He was still a child and couldn't help but respond to Ninty-nine kindnesses.
"Don't worry Hunter," Ninty-nine said to him softly, "This isn't the end."
Hunter shook his head as he pushed the memory away. He was grateful to the old clone. He had needed someone when no one was there for him. Hunter didn't want to abandon the old Maintenance Clone but he knew his place was out on the battlefield and not stuck here.
Slipping into the locker room Hunter hurried to follow the old clone as he was restocking the cleaning gear. Ninty-nine looked up and gave him a smile.
"Hunter." He said, "You've been gone all evening." He chuckled. "You made this old clone worry."
"Sorry Ninty-nine." Hunter told him as he got to work helping him restock the cart. He remembered their conversation before and bit his lip. "Do you know any clone brothers that have abilities?"
"You mean like you and your three brothers?" Ninty-nine asked and shook his head. "No, you four were different." He grinned. "I used to watch you as a tiny baby; you always knew where I lost my communication rod." He chuckled.
Hunter blinked. "I don't remember…"
Ninty-nine waved his hand, "You were just out of your cloning tank, only weeks old."
"Oh." Hunter looked at him, "What about the other three?"
Ninty-nine chuckled, "They had their own gifts." He told Hunter, "But you already know this."
Hunter nodded, "Yeah, but were we together just out of the tanks?"
"Of course," Ninty-nine smiled. "I'm surprised you don't remember; you were the oldest. You might not have been the biggest but you always looked out for your brothers."
Cocking his head to the side Hunter picked up the bucket of dirty water and dumped it down the drain. He tried to dredge up any old memories of being with his brothers but mostly he just remembered the smiling face of a young blonde clone. Hunter didn't remember who they were but he couldn't help but feel like he was missing something, or someone. But that clone cadet was probably all grown up now and gone.
"So, we are brothers," Hunter had known there was a connection between them. He had felt it but couldn't say why; he looked back at Ninty-nine, "Why did they split us up?"
"I don't know." Ninty-nine sighed softly, "but that was a mistake."
Hunter nodded, "Well, I'm going to get them back." He said, determined.
Ninty-nine smiled at him and nodded, "I believe you will."
Looking back at Ninty-nine Hunter returned the smile. He couldn't help but feel like the old clone had watched over him and his brothers for longer then they realized. Hunter wasn't sure what the nat-born called the relationship, it was brotherly but it felt like it was more than just that. Brothers watched out for each other yes but brothers didn't guide you when you felt lost. All Clones knew what their role was even if they didn't have guidance, Or at least they shouldn't need it.
Ninty-nine was more than a brother; Hunter couldn't help but feel it even if he could not name what the relationship was.
TBC…
AN-Yep Ninty-nine is like a dad to the bad batch.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter.
Next up Hunter gets some special training, and the boys find out more about their past together.
