Chapter 15: Making Memories
The lair was quiet in the early morning and Wind was grateful for it. Since meeting Leo, he'd missed the quiet calm of the forest. Although this early morning calm was not quite the same as the serenity of the sunrise over the trees, he would take it.
To Wind's delight he had fallen asleep in a cozy nest. After the emotional melt down in the lair that night none of the brothers wanted to part ways and to Wind's surprise and relief they had decided to have a movie marathon. Donnie, Mikey and even Raph brough pillows and blankets to the pit.
After much debate, and a very long list of reasons from Mikey, they had watched all the Kragnard episodes. A show that Wind would never admit to Mikey was very, very stupid.
Yet Wind had never enjoyed a show more. Not because of the show but more who he was watching it with. Mikey's wide eyes as he lay on his stomach, hands cupping his face, feet kicking in the air in absolute glee. Donnie picking holes in the rather absurd plot, sharing conversation with Wind over the film. Raph rolling his eyes at the lameness, sharing his popcorn with Wind, when not throwing some at the orange clad turtle. Wind didn't even know when he drifted into a comfortable sleep, completely at ease with those around him to drift into the arms of restfulness. When he woke up he loathed to move, comfortable in the nest of blankets and pillows. The others had fallen asleep around him. Mikey was by his side, his mouth hanging open, drool pouring down his face. Raph, slept at his head like a guardian over the three of them. Donnie was on his other side, his face relaxed and restful.
At that moment Wind couldn't imagine any of them taking on the Shredder or the Krangg. They were so young, so innocent. He had to stay there and protect them. His brothers had no idea how dangerous the world around them was! Why they were in New York of all places he'd never understand. But if they were going to stay there in the heart of Krang central then there was no way in the world he could leave them there alone to face the Krang. How could he?!
At that moment, Wind had never felt so compelled to stay. To protect them. His brain was already making the subtle shift of referring to them as 'the brothers' to 'my brothers'. It was…a lot to take in.
"Hmmph" Donnie made a noise, the genius stretching his arms above his head as he stretched.
"Good morning," Wind commented awkwardly.
"Morning," Donnie smiled, the genius's heart smiling as he woke up surrounded by his brothers, all of his brothers. "We must have dozed off during the marathon."
"Best movie marathon ever!" Mikey commented, yawing. "Morning Bros!" his smile was chipper. Wind titled his head; it was as if the youngest turtle just switched a switch from asleep to awake. How does Mikey have this much energy? Wind wondered amused as the orange clad turtle turned to pestering Raph to wake up.
"I'm sleeping" Raph groaned at the youngest ongoing monologue of singsong wake up calls as the orange clad turtle poked him in the forehead.
"Mikey let Raph wake up on his own" Donnie warned.
Wind smiled as he watched the interaction.
Deciding to take his purple clad brother's sage advice Mikey turned his gaze toward Wind.
"Do you want to help me make breakfast?" the orange clad turtle asked, his smile welcoming.
"Sure" Wind smiled, grateful for the invitation. He'd never actually used electronic cooking ware before but how different could it be from campfire cooking?
Wind gaped in horrified awe at the disaster before him. Mikey had said it was going to be simple. A simple common breakfast. Nothing fancy. How had it evolved to..this. Where had things gone so horribly wrong?!
A high pitched annoying beeping continued to blare seemingly from some device on the ceiling, as smoke continued to drift from the dreaded 'toaster'.
The blender was continuing to spray an array of colorful juice as it lay swirling on the floor, splattering the walls and cupboards.
"What is going on?" Donnie asked as the purple clad turtle rushed into the kitchen, his brown eyes wide as they took in the disaster area.
"Dude!" Mikey was on his tail, blue eyes wide. "I only stepped out for a second!"
After explaining and naming the various appliances, Mikey had left a list of instructions and had run out to ask Master Splinter if he wanted any eggs; leaving Wind in charge. He had in fact only been gone a few minutes.
Unsure of how to explain how things had grown out of control so quickly, as he wasn't exactly sure himself! The various appliances seemed to hate him! Wind just stared at the three turtles apologetically, utterly bewildered.
Raph was the last to enter the kitchen waiving a hand to clear the smoke as he coughed. "What is going on. Are you guys cooking or burning down the lair?"
Wind's ears burned in embarrassment.
Thankfully the horrid beeping stopped after Donnie pressed a few buttons on the device. Although the kitchen looked a lot like abstract art at this point, the blender finally stopped painting the kitchen as Mikey unplugged the wayward machine.
"I don't think these are edible" Raph grumbled skeptically as he poked the now very hard eggs.
"Look on the bright side Raph" Mikey smiled. "They would make good frisbees"
"I'm sorry, I don't know what happened!" Wind admitted, eyes wide.
"Dude you totally turned cooking into an ultimate sport or something dude" Mikey commented eyes wide. "I don't think I could do this if I tried."
Raph and Donnie let out loud laughs grabbing their knees.
Wind bowed his head sheepishly. It wasn't like he meant to make a mess.
Cooking over a fire was a lot easier.
"Dude it's fine" Mikey put a reassured hand on his shoulder, his laughter dying down when he noticed his brother's dejected look. "So cooking isn't your strength, no biggy. Good thing, I'm an excellent cook!"
Raph and Donnie shared a look at Mikey's last comment but said nothing.
"Remind me not to let you in the kitchen again" Raph commented though his eyes were teasing not meanesing.
Mikey let out a snicker. "Seriously dude, this is a whole other level. What did you do?"
Wind bowed his head embarrassed.
"I'm almost afraid to ask," Donnie commented looking at the toaster. "How did you even break the toaster? There is only toast in here?"
"That thing is crazy!" Wind defended, narrowing his eyes.
