Three Months Later

As Emily drew ever closer to the end of her pregnancy, her nesting instincts went into overdrive. Because, however, she wasn't going to be keeping the baby, said nesting instincts didn't have much of an outlet. Which meant that she spent quite a bit of time anxiously pacing and picking her nailbeds to shreds in lieu of something productive to do.

She was doing just that when Alex arrived home after her last class of the day...and it was hardly the first time she'd returned to find Emily having worked herself into a nervous tizzy in her absence.

"Em, you're going to wear a groove in the floor if you aren't careful," she gently chided. But she said it with a tender smile. She approached, resting a hand on Emily's hip as she leaned in to kiss her in greeting.

Instead of responding to that, though, the words that escaped in a rush of air were, "Let'sgetmarried..."

For a few moments, Alex blinked in surprise. "You... You want to..." she stammered.

She nodded, though her expression was sheepish. "I think we should get married," she repeated. A beat. Then, she rushed to add, "I've actually been thinking it for awhile now, but I just feel like the timing is right and I already know you're the person I want to be with for the rest of my life – or afterlife, as the case may be. You said you don't know if you want to get married again, but I was kind of hoping that maybe, you know..."

Alex interrupted her rambling with a soft smile and a whisper of, "I'll marry you."

Neither Alex nor Emily had ever been the type for extravagant, over-the-top weddings. Which is why they'd elected to have a quiet, intimate ceremony at the courthouse. Tara and Rebecca were their only guests, serving as their witnesses.

Emily couldn't stop smiling as she held Alex's hands, listening to the officiant read from the non-traditional ceremony spiel without truly paying attention to it. This was everything she'd always wanted but never truly thought she could have. Alex was everything good and pure and wonderful in the world and the fact that she not only wanted her, but loved her...well, she didn't think she'd ever truly stop being amazed by that fact. (And even if she was a vampire and nearing eight months pregnant, neither of which she was exactly thrilled about, she wasn't going to let either thing put a damper on the day.)

As she slid the ring onto Alex's finger with fingers trembling just the slightest bit, she opened her mouth to repeat after the officiant, but before she could get the words out, the doors burst open and everyone's attention was instantly drawn away from the ceremony at hand.

A meek voice called out, "Sir, you can't go back there!"

The voice was wholly ignored and one James Blake leisurely sauntering into the room. "Well, well, well...what do we have here?"
