Alma glanced around feeling really overwhelmed. So much had happened in the past twelve hours, her big argument with Mirabel, Casita falling, the miracle going out, Mirabel disappearing, finding Mirabel and Bruno, returning home, and now they were rebuilding Caista with the help from everyone in town.
At the moment they had stopped for lunch, the women of Encanto bringing out large pots of food to feed the whole village, as parents gathered young children to them.
She had to giggle at one toddler's antics. She was using Luisa as a shield, giggling loudly as her father chased after her. Luisa seemed to be enjoying it too as she scooped the little girl up suddenly and spun in a tight circle, both of them giggling loudly. The father lunge at them, and Luisa stepped to the side, with a smirk, only to trip on a pile of rubble that hadn't been cleared up yet.
The father immediately stepped forward, offering Luisa a hand up, only for Luisa to pull him down on top of her, and unaware of the audience, gave him a kiss on the lips.
At first Alma was alarmed, was this man cheating on his wife with Luisa? Oh the scandals, the damage it would do to their reputation, it would destroy all those involved.
"Mama," a voice called out, as a hand touched her elbow, Julieta appearing out of apparent thin air, "We're meeting over there for lunch," she nodded to a place under the shade of a tree, where a large blanket had been spread and the family was gathering.
Alma nodded, "Julieta, do you know that man over there with Luisa?" she asked. She was trying to change, if this really was something to worry about, she would allow Julieta to do the worrying.
"Who, Tomas Rivera, of course I know him, he's been dating Luisa for a year and a half now."
"But what about his wife?" Alma demanded, "Luisa can't ruin a marriage like this."
"His wife died when Sofia was only a couple of months old," Julieta explained softly, "He helped Luisa, a couple of years ago. She got up the courage to ask Diego Velez to a dance, and he mocked her for it. She was in tears when Tomas stumbled upon them. He helped her home and kept checking up on her. Agustin and I weren't that surprise when he asked her out once she turned eighteen."
"Why wasn't I informed about this relationship?"
"They didn't want to make a big deal out of it," Julieta explained, "They saw how Isabela and Mariano were being hounded, and they didn't want the whole village looking at their love life as some sort of free entertainment. Luisa wanted things to be simple. Just her, Tomas, and little Sofia."
Alma nodded, frowning a little, "You're Padre and I had a small wedding, a simple wedding, just us the priest and our closest friends," she sighed loudly.
"No family?" Julieta asked, glancing at her mother in surprise, "You never talk about them."
"My parents didn't approve of Pedro," Alma admitted, "I wouldn't listen," she chuckled, nudging Julieta slightly, "Your youngest gets that from me."
Julieta blinked in surprise at the joke, "I like to think that's a good thing," she announced, "That she listens to her heart and does what truly makes her happy. I wish Isabela would take a leaf out of Mirabel's book," she sighed, "and stop doing things just to make other people happy."
Luisa voice cut through their conversation, "Mama, Abuela, what!" she seemed surprised to see them, and honestly so was Alma, she had gotten so side tracked in her own memories that she had forgotten why they had been brought up in the first place. Luisa glanced at them and then over at where she had just came from, "Um, how much of that did you see?"
"Enough that I'm going to have to have you go find that man and invite him to have lunch with us," Alma announced, "I want to get to know my future nieto and bisnieta."
Luisa's eyes grew round in surprise, "You aren't mad?" she asked, "I mean I kept our relationship a secret. He's older than I am, and already lost a wife."
"I probably will never move on from your Abuelo," Alma insisted, "But if Tomas is ready to move on, and he makes you happy, then you have my blessing."
Luisa glanced at Julieta in surprise, only to have her nod at her in understanding. A slow smile spread across her face, "I'm going to go find Tomas," she announced, running off.
Alma and Julieta shook their heads in unison, "Ay," they said in unison, "young love."
…
Camilo sighed in relief as his Abuela and Tia arrived at the blanket, both of them slowly and awkwardly lowering themselves to the ground with plates full of food.
"Finally, Mami wouldn't let me get seconds until everyone else got first."
"Where's Luisa, couldn't you find her?" Agustin asked.
Alma answered with a chuckle, "Ay we found her alright," she shook her head amusedly, "she'll be arriving soon, I think she has someone she'd like us to meet."
"Wait," Isabela exclaimed, "Luisa has a boyfriend?"
"Si, I accidentally caught them enjoying a private moment together," Alma announced, making several members of her family blush.
"It was just a little tickle fight," Luisa protested, appearing with little three year old Sofia balanced on her shoulders, a plate in one hand and three cups pinched together in the other, Tomas right behind her with two more plates.
"Um," Luisa said slowly, setting the cups down on the ground, while Sofia clung to her hair for balance, "Familia, I'd like you to meet Tomas Rivera, my, um, boyfriend. Tomas, mi familia."
…
Maria Gonzalez was eager to discover anything that she can twist around to make someone else look bad, especially any member of the Madrigal family. After all they can't be all that perfect now can they. Bruno went about cursing people and Pepa purposely summons clouds whenever she wants just to mess with people. Julieta, well something had to be wrong with her, or she wouldn't have had a dud of a child. Perhaps the problem was Mirabel wasn't Julieta's or more likely, not Agustin's.
She, of course, was helping with the rebuilding, it was the right, Christlike, thing to do, and if she came across some sort of juicy tidbit, some dark family secret hidden in the rubble, all the better for her.
"Tomas!" a voice called out with an amused chuckle from somewhere behind a pile of rubble, "Give that back."
"Come get it," a deeper, male voice called out, "Come on Luisa, you want it?"
Luisa, as in Luisa Madrigal? Maria licked her lips in excitement, what type of dirty secret was she hiding from everyone.
She tiptoed over and peered around a large chuck of wall. Luisa Madrigal and Tomas Rivera were alone, with no one else in sight, chasing each other around like toddlers playing tag.
Luisa took a giant leap and grabbed hold of Tomas, dragging him down with her, "Caught you," she said with a smirk.
"Oh, you've caught me a long time ago," Tomas insisted, pressing his lips against hers.
Luisa chuckled, "Can't blame me, you stole my heart."
"Well, I'll just have to give you mine in exchange."
Maria's eyes narrowed as Luisa kissed the man. This was totally uncalled for, unseemly, did Julieta not teach her daughter anything about decorum? She was going to have to talk to Alma about this, and anyone else that would listen.
…
Alma was going over blueprints with Mirabel, Julieta, and Bruno when she heard someone call her name. Bruno immediately paled.
"It's Senora Toxica," Mirabel announced.
"Mirabe…" Alma started only to stop when Julieta shook her head sharply at her, her mouth pressed into a thin line.
"Be careful what you say," Julieta hissed, "That woman can twist the most innocent comment into something ugly."
"She's the one who started the whole, I make bad things happen," Bruno added.
"She makes Isabela look like a saint."
"Alma," Maria cried out, "There you are, I've been looking for you. You need to do something about Luisa, her behavor is inexcusable. She's setting a terrible example. Some might even question her upbringing, the way she was carrying on with that Tomas Rivera."
Julieta sighed, "Tomas Rivera and Luisa are courting," she announced, "It is perfectly acceptable for them to flirt."
"They weren't flirting," Maria insisted, "They were…" she trailed off, "You know what," she finally finished, lamely.
"I don't know what," Julieta snapped, taking a step forward, "But I do know you. You take something small, and you twist it into something bigger just to stir up trouble. I bet that Tomas and Luisa did nothing more than steal a kiss while they thought that they had some privacy. It's none of your concern."
Maria opened her mouth, but got cut off by Alma, "Maria, get out of my sight, I will not listen to you complain about my family like that. Luisa is a good girl with a good head on her shoulders. Any more cruel comments about my family will result in your exile, do I make myself clear?"
"But Tomas…" Maria started.
"Will in the near future be my grandson-in-law," Alma snapped, "And therefore is included in my anti-slander policy. Do not test my patient."
Maria huffed, before stomping away, grumbling under her breath.
"Um," Bruno said slowly, "I don't know if you realize this, but you just, sort of, told Maria Toxica that Luisa and Tomas are engaged, and knowing her…"
"She'll claim that we're trying to do a cover-up by having her get engaged without a proper courtship," Alma cried out, "Luisa will be humiliated. I better go find her."
