Chapter 18: Everything Changes

The Next Morning

Misty woke up early in the morning.

She recalled the events of yesterday, and a part of her had hoped that it was all just a dream. However, she had a feeling that it wasn't.

"Today's the day. For better or worse, today is going to be the day that everything changes..."She thought, as she got out of bed.

She did her usual morning routine of showering, brushing her teeth and getting dressed. Once she was done, she went downstairs to where her family was.

She saw her mother, grandmother and both of her brothers were already there, all sitting around the living room, seemingly waiting for her.

Her mother, as soon as she saw her, let out a breath in relief.

"Misty, you're awake..."Mei said in a surprisingly gentle manner.

"How did you sleep?..."Suyin asked.

"Fine, I guess..."Misty said, as she hopes for the best.

"So...uh...about yesterday? Um..."Misty paused, unsure how to go about this.

"You're still wondering if yesterday where we were in China and attacked by an evil dragon actually happened? If that's it, then yes...none of it was a dream..."Martin said, surprising his sister.

"So...it actually happened..."Misty said, surprised but also disappointed.

"Yes, it did..."Mei said, using minor bits of magic to make a fork arrive in her hand.

"It sure did..."Max said, as he even levitated a cookie from the kitchen.

However, his mother took the cookie from him and sent him a strict look.

"Maxwell, it's 7 in the morning! It's too early for sweets!..."Mei said, walking to the kitchen and coming back. "Have an apple instead..."Mei said, though it was more like an order.

Max frowned.

"Aw, Mom. Fine..."The lttle boy said, as he levitated an apple to him instead.

Misty was stunned, but somewhat happy by this development.

"So...I guess I'm not the only sorceress in the family anymore..."Misty said, being more comfortable with it than she thought.

"Indeed. Even so, while I did promise to ease up a bit...I rather not have us rely on magic on everything. We do have to do things for ourselves..."Mei said sternly.

However, she noticed her reading glasses were missing before making them appear in her hand. All eyes were on her and she shrugged as she knew that she just went back on her own words a moment ago.

"But...I suppose every once in a while, it won't hurt for something small...or for emergencies..."Mei said with a small smile, getting an amused look from her own mother.

"That's my girl..."Suyin said, chuckling.

She did hope that this was a sign that her daughter will loosen up and learn more to expand their understanding of their new magical abilities, with safe limitations of course.

Misty smiled slightly, before recalling what was to become of their magic.

"Don't get used to it...without the spell book, we'll be pretty much back to normal before we know it..."Misty said, looking to the book that she had to give up.

Her family heard this, none of them knew what to say exactly to help her feel better. Still, her little brother still felt upset by this development.

"Do you really have to give up the spell book? Just as we started using it?..."Max asked, looking bummed.

Misty knew how he was feeling and grumbled to herself.

"Believe me, I don't wanna do this...but I caused a lot of problems for Danny and Star, as well as their friends. I gotta do something to show how sorry I am. Even if it means giving this up..."Misty said, looking sad about what she had to give up.

Suyin and Mei saw this, knowing how hard this must be for her. As much as they had been amazed and come to like using magic, they also understood this as well.

"Doing the right thing isn't always easy, Misty, but it's always the admirable decision. It's shows that your taking the step into maturity..."Laolao said in a gentle manner.

"Your Laolao is right. Whatever happens, just know that I'm proud of the responsible choice you're making..."Mei said as she saw the expression on her child's face.

"Also...even if magic is amazing, you don't need it to find a happier life..."Mei said, putting a hand on her shoulder.

Misty didn't answer her, instead looking to the book.

"Despite all that happened... I loved having magic. I can do so many amazing things...and I felt special... but I wasted all of it on messing with good people who never did anything wrong to me. I don't deserve these powers..."She said, looking sad.

"You made mistakes, Dearie...and someone tried to take advantage of you. But in the end, you stayed true to yourself and made the right choice in the end. That's marks you as someone true worth calling themselves honorable..."Suyin said, genuinely believing that her granddaughter is doing the right choice.

The rest of the family nodded.

"She's right..."Mei said as the boys agreed.

"In all honesty, I'd like to study and practice how all this magic work but since I've only had these powers for less than day, I won't miss them that much..."Martin said while Max was still eating his apple.

"But I can't speak for our little brother..."He said.

"Magic is cool...I'll miss it but what are we gonna do..."Max said with a shrug.

"Yeah..."Misty said before her mother pulled her closer into a hug.

"Everything will be okay..."She said as the hug was soon accompanied by the rest of the Yang-Smith family.

"I promise you... things will go well. There is at least one good thing to come out of this..." Mei said.

"What's that?..." Misty asked, wondering what she meant.

"We're closer than ever..." Suyin said, smiling at her.

Mei agreed.

"Yes, we are..."She said.

Misty heard this and gently smile at her mother.

"I guess that's true..."She said, realizing that they are right since Misty can't imagine herself doing this with family a month ago.

"It's a silver lining, as the American saying goes..."Suyin said, which causes her to laughing and giggling at her comment.

Misty saw her family smile at her, and felt like a weight was lifted from her shoulders.

"I guess that's an upside..."She thought, feeling better.

The descendants of the Yang clan continued their breakfast as Misty smiled, grateful to have this special family bonding moment with all of them.

However, Misty still felt a little somber about having to give up all her magic, but she knew that she won't be miserable without it.

Later

Due to the stress and danger from yesterday, Mei allowed Misty to stay home from school to rest up and feel better.

Now it was mid afternoon and Misty knew time was closing in.

"I didn't even get to use a spell to visit New York, Japan or Rome. I can't believe I spent so much magic on "dates" with a hologram of all things. How embarrassing..."Misty said in disappointment.

She saw the time and felt anxious for many reasons.

"It's almost time..."She said, looking to the spell book in her hands.

Her older brother saw her and knocked on her door that was left open.

"You okay, sis?..."Martin asked.

"Not really, but I can't delay this. After today, I'm going to go back to being an ordinary girl..."Misty said, sounding upset.

"Ordinary?..."Martin asked, questioning her choice in words.

"Misty, when we were kids, you tried to make a kite out of tinfoil, tape, popsicle sticks, glue and yarn.. Trust me, you were never ordinary..."He said in a joking way.

"Funny..."Misty said, rolling her eyes.

"You know what I mean..."Martin said, trying to cheer his little sister up.

"Is this an attempt to make me feel better? Because it sucks..." Misty said, annoyed.

Martin scratched the side of his head before he tried to give another pep talk.

"Look. I get it... you don't want to feel like the nobody you felt you were before. But, you should know, you're not a nobody...especially to us. I get that you really wanted that guy to like you... and it didn't exactly go right. But... think of this as a learning experience. You now know what NOT to do to get a boyfriend now..."He said.

"How helpful..."Misty said sarcastically.

"You know what I mean..."Her brother said.

"Another silver lining is that we now know about the issues you've been going through...and we can help you. You have your family and we'll help you through them...and me and Laolao will make sure that mom keeps her word to be less "tiger mom" on you, which I hope will take some of the pressure off ya..."He said.

"Yeah..."Misty said, smiling slightly.

"And with the time your gonna get to relax, you can make some real friends, and hopefully you could find love with a guy who, unlike Danny, does love you back..."He said, speaking with a little more confidence in his voice.

Misty took a breath and nodded, feeling less stressed out.

"That part didn't suck..." She said, laughing a bit.

"Good, cause I wasn't lying. We're gonna help you as best as we can. Just give us a clear warning if we end up being overbearing, K?..."Martin said.

"I will..."Misty said.

"Good..."Her brother said with a light chuckle.

Misty smiled, and felt some guilt over past behavior that wasn't due to Wufong's influence.

"Has he always been this nice? Why did I always see him as a overly perfect and arrogant jerk?..."She thought, feeling bad for how she resented her brother in the past.

"Thanks, Martin. I'm sorry for...how mean I was before...and for what I said about you. I shouldn't have said what I said..."She said.

"Well, I realize now that when I was always studying and acting like a "model student", I barely had time to be a true brother to you and Max. We didn't really have a real relationship as siblings. I'm hoping to change that and make up for lost time now..."He said.

"Well...you're off to a good start now..."Misty said, making her brother smile.

"Awesome..."He said.

The two then had a semi-awkward sibling hug with a few pats on their backs, then they both just laugh at themselves.

"I think I can get used to this version of Martin than the "perfect" one from before..."She thought, feeling a little better now.

A few moments later

Misty saw what time it was, knowing that she should go now. Misty soon grabbed the spell book and soon walked out of her house, taking a deep breath.

Her family watched her go.

"I'm heading out..."Misty said.

"Should we go with you?..." Mei asked.

"No... I need to do this myself..." Misty said.

"Okay... but if that blonde tries anything on you, I will find her and I don't care what her boyfriend does to me. I'll certainly give her a stern talking too..." Mei said in a motherly protectiveness.

Misty gave a small smile as she walked away.

"At least I don't feel alone anymore..."Misty thought, as she knew that she and her family were closer than before.

The only thing she can say was a positive change to her life, since getting the book.

Once Misty stepped out the door, she began to face the music.

"Better get this over with..."She thought.

Later

Near the woods

Misty pushed away some loose branches and stepped on some old leaf and twigs that crackled and snapped with every footsteps she took.

"There it is..." She said.

Misty soon arrived to her destination, waiting for the people she has wronged the most.

"Here they come…"She thought, becoming a bit anxious now.

Team Phantom was now in front of the young sorceress, for one reason only.

For the spell book.

"Hi, guys..."Misty waved awkwardly, still a little anxious.

"Do you have it?..." Danny asked, wanting to get to the point.

The dark haired sorceress nodded, knowing they had business to deal with. She pulled the book from her bag and presented it to them.

"Here..." Misty said, handing the book. "For real this time. Wufong's spirit is gone, so it won't reform if hit with something not magic..."She said.

"Are you sure?..." Danny asked, still cautious.

As if to prove a point, Misty opened it and pointed to a small piece missing from one page.

"I tore it off at home and threw it in the oven. It didn't reform. I just figure that bringing it to you guys [would still that I'm not hinding anything. Plus, having you see it destroyed by your own hands might be just what you need to know how truly sorry I am...no more tricks, no more plans, no more...trying to take what's not mine..." Misty said, as she held her head down and held the book out.

"Take it. Burn it, cut it, sit on it, I don't care anymore... do what you want..."She said in defeat, not bothering to fight now.

Danny looked to the group. No one had a reaction. There was only one reason they were here.

"She really seems to have really given in..."He thought, seeing her sincerity.

The ghost boy reached out for the book, only to stop for a moment. He wanted to be sure about something.

"So... he's not in there anymore. But, is anyone else in there?..." Danny asked, wanting to be sure.

"No, just him. Or, there were..." Misty said sincerely.

"Well, at least we don't have to worry of creepy Jiangshi's, psycho superpower stepsisters or guy making teenagers be irresponsible and have a kid..."Star said, crossing her arms.

"Eww! Just hearing about that wannabe vampire creep and that sexist ghostly stone dragon makes sick to my stomach!..." Sam commented in an upset manner.

"Tell me about, just saying all that makes my skin crawl!..." Star said in disgust.

"How do you think I feel? At least none of you are technically RELATED to those creeps..."Misty said bitterly.

"Then maybe we should all stop talking about them and never it up ever again..."Tucker suggested as everyone immediately agreed, including Misty.

"Right... well... Here you go..." Misty said, not even looking at anything but the ground.

"So...you're really not going to fight back?..."Jazz asked.

"No... I've accepted my fate. I'm going to be ordinary again... and stay that way..." Misty said, though she looked sad about it.

"You'd want to be a normal person?..." Sam questioned, not liking that idea.

"No...but you're not the one who almost ruined two people's lives because of an unreciprocated crush that went out of control..." Misty said.

"Fair point..." Sam said, looking away.

Misty turned to Danny, showing him the spell book that had caused so much trouble.

"Well... just take it. Destroy it. I can go home right after. My family and I are happier together now... that I can at least be happy about that. As much as I like magic, I like being rid of all the trouble I caused thanks to it and make things right between us. So... go ahead... destroy it..." She said, making it clear that she won't fight back.

Danny stared at her.

Unlike in the past, he didn't seen any manipulations or deception from the dark haired girl.

He knew that Misty messed up, but she was also a victim in a way too since she had been used as a pawn. He also realized that she deeply regrets everything and wanted to make things right.

"I guess without that creep messing with her mind and amplifying her envy, she's not so bad..."He thought, seeing her sincerity.

He suddenly recalled a bad choice he almost made, that lead to a dark future that was thankfully gone now...all because he was given a second chance to make things right.

He also knew that in a way, Misty didn't even have a real opportunity to have a second chance, since Wufong wouldn't let her. Now that he's gone, she truly feels bad and knows what she did was wrong.

"Maybe that is what she really needs after all, a second chance..."He thought as he sent a look to his girlfriend.

He then turned to Misty, who was still expecting him to destroy the spell book right before her eyes. Danny, to her surprise, pushed the book back.

"Actually... maybe we shouldn't..."He said, not sounding at all upset.

Misty raised her head, having not expected this.

"Huh?..."She asked, wondering if she heard him right.

Danny smiled as he turned to the others, who weren't too surprised by his sudden choice about the book, while Star had a reluctant look on her face.

"We agreed to talk about her, right?..." He asked, knowing that it took a lot of convincing to get his Team to agree to this decision of his.

All of them nodded. But Sam still had that same anger look on her face that she usually wore.

"Uh... what's going on?..." Misty asked, still confused.

"I've been talking with everyone here last night... and if you were truly sorry and meant what you said about wanting to make things right...we'd at least be open to the idea of giving you another chance...provided you agree to certain conditions..."Danny said, shocking Misty.

"Wait...what?..."Misty asked, wondering what is happening.

"Look Misty... let's just say we had a few situations where magic would have been... pretty helpful. And, as far as we know, you're the only magic user we know of..."He said.

"Or at least the one who won't turn us into zoo animals or garbage just for payback against someone thinking like an individual..."Sam said bitterly.

"Uh, what?..."Misty asked, confused by that.

"Long story. Let's just say someone else likes to use magic to mess with us..."Tucker said, noticing the scowl from Sam.

"As I was saying, we need someone who is good with magic. And that someone... is going to have to be with you..."Danny said, shocking the young sorceress even more now.

"Really? You're... trusting me? With the same book I used to cause you trouble?..."Misty asked, sounding hopeful and optimistic.

The ghost boy nodded and looked back to everyone.

"I talked it over with everyone and we all agreed that as long as you don't cause any more trouble and help us out from time to time...that we'd give you another chance..." Danny said.

"Well… most agreed but the rest of us vowed to respect the majority vote..." Star said with arms crossed, making it clear which side she was on.

"Really?..." Misty asked.

"Yes, really. You can keep it..."Danny said.

"Within reason..."Jazz said, wanting to make that clear.

"And it's not like we can trust the other magic use we know..."Tucker said.

"We can trust you... if slightly more..."Sam said, though she said it reluctantly.

She wasn't the only one as Danny's girlfriend was glaring at her and made sure that she stood her boyfriend, while continuing to keep her eyes on Misty.

"I don't, but like I said, I'll respect the majority vote. Just remember that it's your last chance. Very. Last!..." Star said, pointing at her.

The information she was given just sunk in. Misty looked to the book. Memories of every poor choice and their dangerous backfires flooded her mind.

As much as she wanted to keep her magic, she was also worried too.

"But... what if I mess up? What if I relapse?..."Misty asked, looking insecure now.

Danny, however, smiled at her in an encouraging way. Remembering his own slip-ups and mistakes he made back when he first started out when he got into his accident in his parents lab and gain his ghost powers.

"You won't. You had one chance to make me yours forever and it went to ashes because you knew it was wrong. I think you're a better person than you think..." Danny said, nodding in his faith in her.

Misty felt touched and she nearly teared up. However, she knew she needed to hear more than his words alone.

"And… what do they think?..." Misty asked, wanting to hear their opinions.

"Sam?..."Danny asked.

The goth girl just rolled her eyes.

"Sure... whatever. Just don't use any on me. I've grown to really hate magic... something I can't share with other goths or individuals..." Sam said.

"Tucker?..."Danny asked.

The techno geek only shrugged.

"So long as she doesn't make any technology disappear in a snap, then were good. Just remember… you lost your shot as me too..." He said with a smug smile, much to everyone's displeasure.

Misty rolled her eyes at that, before turning to Danny's older sister.

"Jazz?..."Danny asked.

His sister only pondered.

"Well… she never meant to do any physical harm and made good in fixing her problems. And I guess that it's not her fault she has poor experience and poor choices in people to reach out to. So… I will keep an eye on her..."She said, holding out a pen and paper as if to study her.

Danny nodded. He then turned to his girlfriend, who was the only other one who was affected by Misty and was more upset with her than he was.

"Star?..."He asked, hoping to hear her words.

Star sent an icy glare at Misty, before looking at Danny with a much softer expression.

"I'll go along with whatever you think is best, Boo…"She said, though made it clear she was reluctant about it.

"Then it's settled..."Danny said, nodding at Misty.

"You mean...?"

"You can keep the book. And your magic. So long as you're alright with one or two of us checking up on you every week to see how you progressing?..."Danny said, adding an extra condition to try and keep them in the loop with her.

Star did suggest that extra condition, but for a slightly different reason than what she told her boyfriend, which he was aware of and decided to let it be for now.

Misty heard this and felt relief. She nearly cried in joy and took a look at the book she held.

"I won't let you guys down! If you need anyone who can do magic, I can help!..."Misty swung her arm in excitement as she hugged the book with her other arm.

Star then leaned closer to Misty and whispered something into her ear.

"Just remember this Misty...this is your LAST chance. One more strike and that book won't be the only thing getting torn apart..."Star warned.

Misty knew that she was serious and nodded.

"Understood..."Misty gulped audibly, knowing that Star had the best reason to not trust her.

"Star..."Danny said as he pulled her back gently.

Even so, the blonde girl dragged her thumb across her throat, adding a I'm-watching-you gesture as awkward tension slowly dissolved.

However, Danny immediately pinched his girlfriend's cheeks to pull back on her hostility just a little. Which Star reluctantly did, but still gave Misty an icy cold glare.

Misty groaned at the complications of her arrangement, but the prospect of furthering her magical studies was too great to sulk about.

Still, she promised to do so much better than her predecessors and be a lot more responsible with her magic on order to make less mistakes in the future.

Misty then thought that maybe she could even join Team Phantom on some of their exploits and adventures as the newest member of their young crime fighting team. But if she would need some more practice with her magic, before using out on the field.

"I wonder if this means I can become a magical girl like in anime. Maybe I'll even get an adorable little familiar..."She said with a cute face.

"You plan on dressing like them?..."Sam asked, raising a brow.

"Hmm...I don't know if I have the legs for short skirts..."Misty said, thinking about how she'd look like dressed like them.

Danny slapped a hand over Tucker's mouth, knowing the geek had possibly edge-tettering comment on hand. He watched as Misty's idea of being a magical girl grew into a conversation.

All in all, he was happy to have an ally in magic, even if he was on edge from all her time-freezing.

As the girls talk about magical girls and magic in general, t reminded Danny of something he needed to bring up with Misty.

"Uh...so...anyway...uh...I'm willing to give you another chance...but...can you promise not to...freeze time to steal kisses again? I...kinda don't wanna feel on edge and constantly double my reflection of any makeup smudges on my face that aren't from Star..."Danny said, still unnerved by that experience.

Misty blushed and felt mortified, turning red from embarrassment from her past actions.

"I...I'm so sorry. I don't even know what made me think that was ever a good idea. My hormones must have been amplified to affect my brain back then or something because of Wufong..."Misty said, trying to think up of a quick and reasonable excuse.

However, the girls in Team Phantom didn't seem to completely buy that excuse, especially the blonde member of the team.

Star glared at her and slowly walked up to Misty. She was still mad about that, but she also knew that Misty wasn't completely in control of her own actions and didn't deserve to get a black eye for it.

She didn't know how to feel, but tried to make something clear here.

"For the sake of not doing something that might get me arrested, I'm going to assume that was also part of Wufong's control over you..."Star said, trying to calm her anger.

"However, if I EVER find out that you did something like that again, not even your magic will be able to completely fix it!..."Star warned.

"Get it?..."She said harshly, making it very clear Misty'd better get it or else.

"Got it..."Misty said, raising her hand up in a surrendering manner with her book still in one of her hands

"Good..."Star said as her mood and tone did a complete 180.

Danny saw this and couldn't help himself from start at Star with a lovesick expression on his face.

"She's cute when she's all mad and starts playing bad cop...but I can not let her know that I think it's hot. Who knows how she'll use that against me..."He thought.

Danny was then brought back to reality when Star embraced him and kissed him on the cheek.

"What was that for?..."He asked, touching his cheek.

"I saw you staring at me...and I wanted to..."She said playfully.

Danny smiled at that, he was about to kiss her back but his ghost sense went off.

"Oh man..."Danny said.

"What was that?..."Misty asked, confused.

"My ghost sense..."Danny explained, as he looked around while Star and the rest of Team Phantom get ready for another ghost attack.

Soon, they saw a ghostly two headed bear appeared and went on a rampage.

"Ghost time..."Danny said, as everyone else got out their respective ghost fighting weapons.

"I'm Going Ghost!..." Danny called out as he transformed into his heroic ghost from.

"Okay, that's pretty cool..."Misty admitted.

"Can I help?..."She asked, genuinely wanting to join them.

"How about next time? I still have a bit of frustration to let out..."Danny said, politely turning her down.

"Plus, I don't think we need magic just to deal with Yogi's ugly doppelganger..."Tucker pointed out.

"Oh, okay..."Misty said, a bit disappointed at being left out this time.

However, she also knew that she simply needed work hard on earn their trust and she has plenty of resolve to do just that.

The heroes went to deal with the ghost, and Misty stayed back to watch. She witness it and was really impressed with how well everyone worked together in defeating that ghost.

"That was...awesome..."Misty said, a bit awestruck at how amazing they all are.

Misty hoped that someday soon, she could stand beside them as equals. After the ghost was caught, Team Phantom had left.

But not before checking on Misty and confirming that they were on good term. For now.

What happens next will depend on the young sorceress in training, but she was determined to prove to them that she deserves her second chance.

"One day...I'll use my gift for good...just like do Danny..."She thought, determined.

A part of her will always admire the ghost boy, but she accepted now that he will never be hers. But she was also touched by his kindness and willingness to give her another chance.

She wasn't going to blow it again.

She was going to prove that she deserves her second chance by mastering magic on her own and redeeming the Yang clan, and herself by using the gift for good and not evil.

She was going to redeem herself and her clan from all the evil Wufong did...until she could be proud of her lineage again.

Later

Misty soon arrived home, and there was an upbeat look on her face.

"I'm home!..."Misty said, sounding like she's in a much better mood.

All of them raced to the door, wondering what had happened.

"What happened?..." Mei asked, concerned.

"Is the book gone?..." Suyin asked, after checking for any scratches on her granddaughter.

"Did Danny leave his girlfriend for you?..." Max asked, prompting everyone to send disapproving looks at him. "It's a legit question..."He pointed out.

"Nope to both..." Misty said, presenting the book to them.

Everyone was shocked to see that the spell book was back and still intact.

"Wait... he's letting you keep it?..." Mei asked, sounding the most surprised and skeptical.

"Yup!..." Misty said with a smile. "Just as long as it's not used for anything bad and... oh... we still can't mention about our little adventure in China, including not telling anyone about our little adventure in China or Danny's secret..."She said, explaining Danny's decision and making sure that her family knew the condition of the deal.

"Sounds fair..." Suyin said, accepting the terms of this arrangement.

"You mean I can't use magic to sneak into a movie theater?..." Max asked.

"And I can't use it to teleport to class?..." Martin asked, glad that he's got a way to lower he's gas bill.

"No..." Mei said.

"Ugh!..." Both boys went in unison.

"Still, no harm in using it in the house, right?..." Mei asked, trying to compromise with her children.

Suyin then offered everyone some green tea with her own magic, causing everyone laugh and having a great time. Seeing her family using magic brought a smile to Misty's face.

Today marks a new start for the Yang-Smith family, and she could feel like most of her baggage was gone now.
