The breakfast was 7:30 am like always in their household and Caroline didn't have a choice but to put on casual clothes, jeans and a shirt and go join the brothers for breakfast.
She looked herself in the mirror first and she looked so tired and last night's crying was reflected in her face. She applied more make up than she usually did to hide all that and left the room.
When she got to the dining room, Elijah didn't say anything to her while Klaus surprised her with a hello that seemed genuinely sincere.
"Good morning, Caroline, so good of you to join us."
"Of course, like I have a choice in the matter."
The husband and wife glared at each other while Klaus couldn't be happier.
"You seem so tired, didn't sleep well?" Klaus asked her. His interest in her seemed genuine. She felt the same last night but at the same time, having made that grave error with Mikael, Klaus had to know that she was off-limits.
"I slept fine, everything is fine, Klaus." She tried to push him away showing disinterest in him but Klaus wasn't having it.
"You sure, maybe you heard our conversation last night and that made you sleepless?" Klaus asked and it didn't feel genuine caring. Then something changed in his expression and he said, "Caroline, Elijah, why don't we talk about the elephant in the room."
"So Caroline, last night I learned that you did a grave mistake by sleeping with our father and betraying your husband in the worst way possible."
"But I believe in second chances and so does my brother."
Both glared at him.
"While he is sleeping with someone you hate, he's still giving you everything you want, doesn't he? So you don't have to sleep with anyone while you still have everything one could ever dream of. Do you know how many women wish to be in your place, Caroline?"
Caroline stared at him in bewilderment. 'I he joking right now?'
"GO. FUCK. YOURSELF. KLAUS!" she yelled and flashed away to her room.
She only heard Klaus laugh and say, "She's feisty, I like her."
She went and undressed herself and decided to take a hot bath in her ridiculously huge tub.
When she was laying there, in the tub filled with foams and salts, eyes closed, she felt everything bad fall away and as she heard the elevator doors open and close, she was sure the brothers left to take care of business in town, meaning there was always someone to kill or maim.
She kept her eyes shut and relaxed when his voice nearly made her jump, "Can I join you, sweetheart?"
"KLAUS! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?" Her hands instinctively tried to cover herself.
"Relax, I don't see anything. You didn't answer my question, though?" Klaus asked walking to the tub and sitting on the edge.
"What? You most certainly can't. GET OUT!"
"Now, now, is that any way to treat your guests?" He asked as he made circles in the water with his finger.
"I don't remember politeness etiquette to say that I have to share a bath with my husband's brother."
Klaus chuckled, "I was just joking, love. I actually came to check on you. I'm sorry if I was harsh back there but Elijah needed to hear that I was on his side with this."
"You are not?"
"It's complicated, sweetheart. While I understand my brother's rage toward you, I myself would have handled it quite differently."
"And what would you have done?" Caroline asked curiously.
"Firstly, I would never stop sleeping with you no matter what you did. But every bad deed does need to get punished, so I would find other ways to make you suffer for awhile." He said, looking at the water and playing with the foam above her legs.
"Other ways, that wouldn't include sleeping with my enemies?"
"Yes, If I would have you in my bed, I couldn't even think about sleeping with someone else."
"So how would you have punished me?"
"I would have found other ways to humiliate you."
"Like?"
"Oh, I don't want to give my secrets away. Maybe one day I'll need to use them on you."
"Klaus, you heard what happened with Mikael. That means I am off-limits to you. But there are a lot of beautiful girls in this world, go find someone else." She did her best to sound serious enough to push him away, but he was Elijah's brother so she should know that he's not the one to give up so easily.
"I've met a lot of you girls in my 1000 years of existing in this world but I have never met anyone like you. There's no way I'm letting you go now." He turned to look at her and something unspoken was said between them that she couldn't exactly put in words.
"Klaus, I'm off-limits. You heard Elijah, he doesn't forgive and he doesn't forget. And he definitely would never let me go."
"We'll just have to see about that, won't we. But first, answer me this." He edged closer to her.
"If Elijah wasn't in the picture, would you consider-"
"I don't know, Klaus, I just met you yesterday." Caroline said shaking his head. "And it doesn't matter what would happen if he wasn't in the picture. He is. And I can't entertain those thoughts. So, please leave, as I want to come out now."
Then he did something totally unexpected: he leaned in and kissed her forehead for a second and while keeping his face close to her, he whispered, "It's going to be alright, I promise."
And with that promise in the air, he left and shut the door behind him, leaving her feeling perplexed.
'What just happened?'
When she came out of her bedroom, she noticed that both Maria and Klaus were gone, as in she was alone in the apartment. But Maria was suppose to be there the whole day. Maybe Klaus sent her somewhere?
She thought about going out, but she didn't know when Elijah would order her to come back so she couldn't really go anywhere for long as long as he was in town.
So after flipping the tv channels for a while, she grew tired of that, went to her book case, chose another novel to get lost in and she did, she was so lost in it that she didn't even notice Elijah returning with his brother.
"Oh god, what are you reading, Caroline?" Klaus asked her, making her jump a little.
Elijah was just as disgusted by it, but he was used to it, so he just went to pour them a drink.
Klaus grabbed the book and read the title out loud, "'The True Love Experiment' by Christina Lauren."
"Ugh, Caroline, if you like romance novels, at least read the classics like something from Jane Austen or Emily Bronte." He commented while handing the book back to her. "You should really screen her reading habits, brother."
"Firstly, what makes you think I haven't read them already? And secondly, both of you are insufferable. Clearly brothers."
After saying that she left them alone and Klaus couldn't help but chuckle.
"So Niklaus, have you thought about working for me. I could really use someone like you, a good strategist, to advise me while I rule the West."
"Elijah, I have been in America less than 24 hours and you already want an answer from me. I still need time to think about it." Klaus said and after thinking a little, "I will take you up on your offer with a little condition attached to it."
"And what's that?"
"You let me befriend your wife."
"Excuse me?"
Caroline was listening and thought that she was going to have an aneurysm. 'What the hell was he doing?'
"You and Caroline are both so miserable, let me be both of your friend and maybe I could help fix whatever is broken between the two of you."
"So you want to join her shopping sprees and lunches with her besties?"
"Precisely, I'll be her shadow, her security guard if you will, when I'm not busy advising you, that is."
'Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Please say 'no' to that, Elijah. Please don't let him fool you.'
Caroline was quite horrified listening how Klaus planned to insert himself into her life.
Elijah sighed heavily, "Okay, but If I find out that you two-"
"I promise." Klaus said seriously and then smiled, saying, "Let's drink to that, shall we?"
'This is not going to end well for any of us.'
Rest of the day Caroline stayed in her room except the dinner time. The dinner was spent mostly Caroline fuming and glaring at Klaus, while Klaus and Elijah talked business.
The next morning. At breakfast.
"Caroline, now that you have my brother watching your every move, you can go wherever the hell you want, as long as he is accompanying you."
Klaus smiled at her and asked her casually, "As Elijah doesn't need me today. I have the day free. Do you want to go somewhere?"
Caroline just stared at Klaus for the longest time before saying, "Fine, I want to meet Hayley and Rebekah. Go to the day spa with them."
"Klaus looked at Elijah questioningly?"
"Her best friends, Hayley Marshall is a werewolf and Rebekah Martinez is fellow baby vampire," Elijah explained to Klaus, disgust evident in his voice. He really disliked them. "Yes, you can go. I'll make the arrangements and you can call them."
"Actually, let me do the arrangements, Elijah, so you can focus on your own dealings."
"Fine."
And with that Elijah went out while Klaus started making some calls and Caroline went to get ready.
She was currently in the middle of changing her shirt with her back turned toward the door and suddenly she felt someone looking at her.
"Klaus, could you stop creeping around when I'm naked?" She said without looking at him and putting a new blouse on.
"It's not my fault that you don't know how to close the door. And 'creep around'? What does that mean?"
"It means that you act like a creep who doesn't know how to properly behave around married women, Klaus."
"Okay, the reservations are done by 11:00 am, it's 8:45 right now? So how would you like us to spend the free time on our hands?" Klaus asked flashing behind her and starting to caress her hair.
"Not doing anything remotely close to that," she huffed and turned away from him to go to her huge walk-in closet to choose the jacket and the accessories for her outfit. "Why are you trying to make both of our lives complicated like that?"
"I didn't know I was doing that," was Klaus' response to that as he leaned on the doorframe of the closet watching as she went through her jackets.
Caroline took a second to glare at him and then asked, "What do I think will happen if you and I spend so much time together, huh? Why on earth would you offer something so dangerous to your brother and I can't understand what he was thinking accepting that proposal."
"First answer would be, that I think that all our, yours and mine, dreams will come true soon," that was met with more glaring from her.
"Second is that Caroline, I love living dangerously, and the third answer is that he misses his brother. It's clouding his judgment for now."
"For now?"
"Yeah, after a while when he gets used to me he might end the deal, but if I can keep up the pretences, then he won't suspect a thing."
"What would he even suspect?" Caroline asked, faking confusion while trying to push the truth away.
"Don't play dumb, sweetheart, you know what." He said as he closed the distance between them and started caressing her hair once again while looking intently at her.
Feeling him be so close and shamelessly throwing himself at her, part of her wanted to jump his bones right then and there.
As if Klaus had seen that thought flicker through her mind, he leaned in and before he could kiss her, she pushed him away and darted out of the room like he had stung her with something.
"No!"
"No?" He chuckled, following her to the living room where she was holding her phone with her back turned towards him.
"Yes, No. Besides, I have to call my friends so they would know when to show up."
"It's done already, Caroline." Klaus said rolling his eyes.
"What?" Caroline said as she turned around to see that he was holding a black leather jacket and red platform high heels.
"I told you I'd make all the arrangements."
"Firstly, 'yes' to the jacket, 'no' to the shoes. And secondly, 5 minutes ago you didn't even know who Rebekah and Hayley were and now you have called them already."
"Well, I didn't personally, one of my men did and do you really want to know how fast I can get the information that I need?"
"Never mind," Caroline said as she grabbed the jacket from him and put it on and then grabbed the shoes to put them back.
"What's wrong with the shoes, Caroline," Klaus sighed.
"Too flashy for a casual Thursday,"
"They're not. They balance out your too safe and casual Thursday look perfectly. Giving it the much needed accent.
Caroline stared at him while considering it.
"Put them on for a moment and look at your whole outfit."
Caroline did as told and looked at herself in the full length mirror.
"You are right, they're perfect."
Klaus smiled smugly behind her, his expression visible in the mirror.
"Elijah never does things like that for me. Not even before everything happened."
"Things like…?" He asked, caressing her hair again.
"What's with the hair caressing today, Klaus?"
"I just love your soft hair and it's the only place I can touch you without you freaking out on me."
"What? I'm freaking out right now, Klaus."
Klaus just chuckled and raised his hands in surrender, "I won't do it again for now. You didn't answer my question. What things Elijah never does for you?"
"Things like calling my friends to arrange our dates or choosing what I wear because it actually looks good on me. He just tells me 'wear that sexy little dress so I can show you off'"
Klaus laughed and then asked seriously, "What dates?"
"Er, our meetings at lunch or whatever. We call them lovingly 'dates'. I sometimes forget how old you two are and don't always get the lingo."
A wave of relief washed over him after that and he asked, "Are you ready to go now?"
Caroline looked at her phone clock, it showed 9:53. "It's a little early don't you think."
"Yes, I know, we'll make a quick stop. There's something I want to show you."
"Okay, I'll grab my things and we'll go."
"I'll take the bag, sweetheart."
Klaus flashed away for a second and then he was back next to her, "Shall we go?"
The quick stop was at an art gallery.
"Art gallery? You want to visit an art gallery?" Caroline asked when she peeked out of the window.
"Just humour me, would you?"
"Fine, fine, let's go look at some art." Caroline sighed heavily.
They got out of the car and walked in. It was a showing of different winter landscapes from various artists.
They slowly walked through some of them and finally, in front of a large and beautiful painting Klaus asked her, "Now, what do you think of this one?"
"It's beautiful. So beautiful, it's almost haunting." Caroline commented.
"I'm glad you like it as it's actually mine and soon it will decorate-"
"Wait, what do you mean it's yours? You brought it?"
"No, Caroline, I painted it. Look," And Klaus gestured at the little label next to the painting that confirmed it.
"Wow, I didn't know you could paint."
"Don't feel bad. A lot of people don't know that."
"Still, wow…Is it the only painting here that's yours?"
"Yes, for now. Okay, that's all I wanted to show you. Let's go, as otherwise you'll be late to your 'date' with the girls."
Caroline looked at her watch, it was 10:35 already.
"You're right, let's go."
When they got to the spa, Klaus walked in with her.
"You are just sending me off, right? You are not coming to the spa area?"
"Of course, I will. I have to keep my eye on you at all times. That was the deal I made with my brother."
Caroline rolled her eyes.
When they got inside the building, the foyer was totally empty. Only Hayley and Rebekah were sitting there, waiting for her.
"Caroline! Hey. What's going on? Where are all the people?" Hayley asked as they came to hug her.
"And who's that?" Rebekah gushed, eating Klaus with her eyes as she looked at him up and down.
"Hayley and Rebekah, this is my brother in law, Klaus."
"Oh. It's very nice to meet you, Klaus," Hayley said.
"Yes, so good to finally meet one of Caroline's new family members." Rebekah gushed.
"The pleasure is all mine, girls. If you are important to Caroline, then you are most certainly important to me and my brother."
He couldn't help but chuckle as all their faces mirrored the same expression, that he was naïve to think that.
"Klaus, where are all the other people?"
Klaus rolled his eyes, "You wanted to spa with your girlfriends, I made it happen. The spa is yours for the rest of the day. Isn't that what Elijah usually does for you?"
All three shook their heads in confusion.
"Oh, well, enjoy it then."
Caroline went to the dressing room with the girls.
When they got there, Rebekah said, "I can't believe he did that. Is he joining us inside?".
"He most certainly won't. But he's gonna be there though, like a security guard."
"Since when do you need a security guard?" Hayley asked.
"I don't. But Elijah thought it would be a good idea to keep a closer eye on me."
"Cause you would so cheat on him with his brother after that fiasco with his father." Hayley rolled her eyes.
"I don't know what he's thinking and I don't care. If Klaus is the price to pay to spend more time with my best friends. Then I'll deal."
"Aw…we love you too, honey." Rebekah said to her. And they hugged once more.
** When they got to the spa and water center area, Klaus was already there, with just his shorts on, laying on one of the chairs. And suddenly Caroline felt completely naked as she saw how he was checking her out.
'Maybe spa wasn't such a good idea.' She thought and told the girls, "Let's hit the saunas first."
When they got back, they immediately went for the jacuzzi which was Caroline's own favourite in every spa.
They spent there at least 2 hours, relaxing and gossiping about their acquaintances. Caroline told them not to touch the subject of Klaus and Elijah because she knew Klaus was listening.
Finally they all went to have some massages and there they were alone, besides the staff of course.
"Your brother in law is totally into you, Caroline." Rebekah told her.
"I know. He's been quite difficult."
"What? This is the perfect opportunity, to bang him while he's in town."
"What, no! You know what would happen if Elijah found out. He'd kill me. And he's going to stay in town actually."
"What?" Hayley and Rebekah shrieked.
"He's going to work for his brother, babysitting me is just one of his new tasks."
"Wow, your life has suddenly become quite interesting," Hayley said.
"No, it's quite usual, except for a shadow I now have everywhere I go."
"If you say so," Rebekah said smiling and they changed the subject and talked about their lives.
When they were driving back to the apartment, Klaus asked her if she had good time with her besties.
"The best. Thank you so much, for getting rid of everyone besides the staff."
"It's nothing. Don't even mention it. Now," he edged closer to her, "what do you want to do with the rest of the evening?"
"Klaus, please!" He said, as he was once again unbearably close to her and this time the confined space made it worse.
"Please, what?" He murmured.
"Stop it."
"Stop what?" Klaus asked her.
"Stop playing dumb and stop flirting with me and just STOP, Klaus." She told him while Sitting as far away from him as the limo made it possible.
Klaus rolled his eyes and Caroline saw the first signs of frustration on his face.
"Let's just go home, Klaus. I don't want to go anywhere anymore."
"Fine."
The first thing she did when she walked to the apartment, was to go hide from him in the master bedroom. She closed the door and made sure to lock it.
Then she laid down on the bed and opened her eyes 3 hours later when Maria's voice at the other side of the door said, "Dinner is served, Mrs Mikaelson"
She quickly fixed herself and went to have dinner. For her surprise, only Klaus was there. Elijah wasn't there and Maria was gone too.
"Where are Elijah and Maria, by the way?" Caroline asked him while sitting down at the table opposite him.
"Well, Elijah needed to do something tonight and I sent Maria away."
"I wish you hadn't done that, it's awkward enough as it is."
Klaus raised a brow, "Awkward? Since when are things awkward between us."
"Since you started to made those shameless advances toward me."
"Since the beginning then." Klaus was amused.
"Glad it amuses you how you are trying to ruin my life."
"Cause you have such a good life going here." Klaus rolled his eyes.
"What? As you said it yourself, a lot of women would kill to have that kind of life."
"Maybe. But you could have so much more. You could have wealth AND passion AND love AND purpose in your life."
"Love and passion are overrated."
"Oh, they so aren't." Klaus mused, looking at her with those passionate eyes of his.
All this talk about passion made her quite aroused but she had to end the whole thing before it went out of hands.
"Klaus, I'm not interested, really. And I will never ever sleep with you." Caroline told him and went to her bedroom and when she turned to close the door, Klaus was faster. When she turned around after locking the door, she was startled to find him standing in the room.
"Klaus!" She jumped.
Then she turned around, she opened the door and stood there holding the door and motioning him to leave.
He appeared to do just that when suddenly the door closed with a bang and she was pinned between him and the door.
"Caroline," he murmured so unbelievably close to her, "I can't to that. I can't stay away from you. You are all I can think about."
"Klaus-"
But she was cut off with his lips crashing on her in a passionate kiss. He tried to fight it, but he was so much stronger. Eventually she let go and started kissing him back. Allowing his tongue entrance to her mouth.
She couldn't deny, ever since their first meeting, she had dreamed about this moment.
While he trailed his kisses along side her neck, she let out a small moan. Then he started to undress her and it took all her willpower to push him away, to open the door and flash to the elevator and close the door before he could enter it. Before the doors closed, she heard him say her name, his tone very vulnerable and maybe even worried a little.
When he got downstairs, she was gone. He looked for her everywhere and a panic set in him. Elijah was coming home in few hours and the last thing he needed, was to be scolded by his brother that he had lost Caroline. Besides, he didn't want him to back down on their deal, so he needed to find her before Elijah got home.
Luckily, for him, his men weren't total morons and already he got a call that one of them followed her to a bar close by.
He found her sitting at the bar, drinking Mojito. So with a new plan hatched in his mind, he went to sit next to her.
"What do you want now, Klaus?"
"I want you to come back home and I promise I'll behave myself from now on."
"Really? How long will that last, I wonder?"
"Indefinitely."
"So you could start again any time you wish."
"Yes, but I won't. For the time being."
Caroline huffed but said, "I guess I won't have a better deal with you, so let's go."
When they got back, Elijah was waiting for them.
"So where are you two coming so late in the evening?"
