The 1980s; in a secret SHIELD facility in a private office there was a young African American agent sitting down to face his handler for this mission; the agent was looking at a framed photo of him and Nick Fury Sr an eyepatch wearing brown haired strong man. He was a United States Colonel in the late 1930s-1940s who was very in your face and never share to share his opinions; never ashamed to be out with his African American wife and anyone who would bother them would spend weeks in a hospital room. Very outspoken that the US should involve themselves in World War II when it broke out and never trusted the Nazis; helped found the secret agency the Strategic Scientific Reserve meant to fight Nazi agents in the US and to discretely help fight them. Their biggest success came with the one and only test subject of Project: Rebirth known as Captain America who became a symbol of national pride and for the war effort after Pearl Harbor.
After the war he went to espionage joining the SSR's successor SHIELD and ended up becoming director; only to go out in a field mission against the organisation Enclave only to end up dead. During his time as an agent and director; he had led successful missions in saving the world and was even an ally to the X-Men even at the height of anti-Mutant hysteria which hadn't died down yet. Involving himself after the death of his good friend John Garrett who was the espionage agent who helped recruit him for SHIELD.
"You know that Director Dugan was hesitant about you being given this mission; he had reserves after you going in after your old man went in! Yet you still insist on doing this." the handler said sternly as the Agent Nick Fury Jr just smirked in response; his godfather Timothy 'Dum-Dum' Dugan replaced his father as the Director and he and the late Fury Sr knew eachother back when Dugan was a member of Fury's own military task force that he was the field leader of nicknamed the Howling Commandos. "Well tell me what you know about the enemy?" the handler asked.
"A group backing a terrorist cell; a collection of scientists with science decades beyond the rest of the world seeking to de-stabilise the world's governments and rebuild everything with a technocratic government with them in charge." Fury replied and then looked more serious. "Trust me; I aim to personally avenge my old man and uncle John and shut their operations down personally! I am going to destroy everything that they ever worked for!" Fury swore and the handler shook his head.
"Confidence... Let's hope that it's that and not arrogance... The Enclave are not to be underestimated with; our intelligence states that they are working on cyborgs with prosthetics making them stronger than most humans. You and your team will need this; special EMP bombs stronger than what is out there. Our best minds spent ages designing and perfecting them." the handler said showing the schematics.
"One more thing; keep in mind to look out for this powerful energy source that the Enclave had gotten their hands on. Archaeologists discovered it and SHIELD were sent in to investigate; that was the mission where Agent Garrett met his demise and the Enclave had retrieved it." the handler explained showing a file with descriptions of a glowing orange stone.
Fury led his team into the base and went to work disabling the security system and went forth stealthily but soon they were surrounded armed agents and soon a fight went out; a figure in black body armor with orange lines attacked Fury from behind and he was spaced out.
Once he gianed consciousness he saw that he was strapped into a room facing some smug looking people in white uniforms in front of a pod that had a label on it reading. "So the Junior Fury thought that he could take on the Enclave when even his legendary father failed and was killed in! So sad but the least that the Enclave High Council could do is show you the ultimate weapon that will bring forth our utopia!" said one of them motioning for the pod.
"For years we have worked on creating the perfect specimen; working on DNA samples of the strongest humans and enhancing them and using all sorts of mutant DNA. Our best samples and once we got them to work together we have created this artificial birthing danger and the power source shall bring him to life; this power source is beyond anything that this planet has ever seen! Has the power of souls itself and with it; our perfect being shall destroy all the corrupt governments of the world and we shall bring the entire planet together into a perfect society! Our genius shall create a utopia like no other!" said another of them as Fury raised an eyebrow.
"You know that all this rubbish about creating a perfect human sounds like eugenics which the Nazis were big into; they also seeked to create a worldwide empire and how did that go for them again?" Fury mocked as they shook their heads at him.
"Joke while you can but should we introduce you the tool that shall finish you off like he has done to your team and father. Come on Agent Deathlok!" said another of the Enclave High Councillors and out came the figure and Fury's eyes widened as he recognised the face of the brain haired moustached man.
"Hello Junior; surprised to see me?" asked the face of John Garrett.
"Uncle John... You died and... You are working for them?" Fury asked feeling absolutely shocked and betrayed.
"All that time working for the government and SHIELD, side by side with your father... What did it get me in the end... An explosion when I went to retrieve the rock, left for dead and they took me in... Replaced most of my dying useless human parts with machines and made me better than what I was before! They may have nearly killed me but made me better so why shouldn't I repay what they had done for me!" Garrett smirked as Fury was outraged.
"Dad... He spent weeks mourning you... We all did... You were honoured as a hero at your private funeral... He insisted on chasing after the Enclave to avenge you..." ranted Fury as Garrett shook his head.
"A thankless job all this espionage; I did know in the back of my dead that if I was killed in the line of duty then they would have a cover story for my death! I wasn't even thanked with being made director; when Stoner retired they gave the job to the Howling Commando that I brought in the organisation in the first place! I took pleasure in seeing his furious face before I ended his life!" ranted Garrett as Fury shook his head.
"I am going to bury you for this Garrett!" Fury ranted as Garret looked amused.
"How? We took all your fancy bombs and they are far away from you!" Garrett asked pointing to a bag at a table and he and the Enclave High Council looked confused as Fury smirked.
"Yeah but did you take the remote detonator underneath my thumb's fingertips?" Fury asked managing to reach for his thumbs and set off the EMP bombs which caused an explosion that rocked the lab and Fury got himself free and stole a high tech gun from a guard and began firing at everyone there and the explosion set off the birthing pod which seemed to be powering up since before Fury was captured.
Fury was grabbed at the throat by Garrett who took a knife while grunting from his damaged cybernetic body; "You always did want to be like your daddy... How about I help with that?" Garrett asked with Fury yelling in pain as he was knifed in his left eye.
However the pod opened up and out came a figure of a muscular large man with glowing golden coloured skin and hair who was totally nude and in his hand he was holding a glowing orange rock; the remaining Enclave High Councillors came up to him excitedly with one saying "we are your creators and you are our perfect specimen... You shall be named Adam."
"I know of my creators and your purpose in creating me and yet; I want no part of it. My destiny and what I am shall be mine to figure out." Adam said as he then flew up into the sky and tore into the roof as he flew to the sky.
"Well... Never expected that..." Fury yelled as he managed to shoot the damaged Garrett dead and then shot the remaining Enclave High Councillors dead as they were yelling at Adam to come back.
Soon SHIELD were called in and took into custody the survivors and confiscated all the remaining tech. Fury was sent to an emergency suite in a SHIELD medical facility and was visited by the smiling Director Dugan to check up on him. "Don't mind me; how is everything?" Fury asked as Dugan sighed.
"The Enclave's tech shall be useful as better used by us than against us. Seemed that they were working on Life Model Decoys... Basically robots able to pass as humans; hoping to replace world leaders and important figures. Will be useful to see about using them for body doubles but how about you... Garrett's betrayal has stung me so I can't imagine how you took it or how your father did..." Dugan told him and Fury shook his head.
"Dad ever told me that the hardest part of the job of espionage is knowing who to trust and it looked like that not even he was paranoid enough... Still we got them in the end!" Fury smiled and Dugan nodded and took out a and opened it up to reveal an eyepatch.
"This was your old man's favourite; he would be proud of his boy." Dugan said as Fury smirked as he put it over his damaged eye. "One more thing; we found the pod there and whatever files on it was so hidden that we are struggling to uncover it. Any ideas on what was inside?" Dugan asked as Fury laughed.
"No way in hell would anyone believe me if I told the story..." laughed Fury.
Funny how this originally one time Fantastic Four character Him (yes, that was all he was called in his first appearance) would become such a big Marvel space character. Plus while his role in the movie Guardians Volume 3 was small; I loved the movie and while I don't think it was as bad as reports made it sound like; still heavy for animal lovers but satisfying to see the outcome of the fate of the High Evolutionary and Gunn succeeded in his mission to make the cruellest MCU villain. Not as bleak as early reviews said it was as it still had it's levity and the final song and dance was wonderful. Plus set to the Beastie Boys is one of the best MCU fight scenes in a long while and quite possibly rivalling the arrow scene with Come a Little Bit Closer from Volume 2 in the competition for best fight scene in the Guardians scene.
Plus Cosmo is good dog and don't try to argue this; this point makes more sense to those that saw the movie.
