Just to summarize, for I know it's sometimes difficult to remember what happened earlier:
Delilah was never murdered. Chloe and Lucifer met at the Gillian Taylor case, what was in the canon season two, episode one. Lucifer helps Chloe with the case.
Lucifer never left hell, he is dividing his time between hell and Lux.
Ella en Chloe became roommates.
Lucifer asked Chloe's help to solve a case in which a lost polonaise by Chopin was stolen.
The third case resulted in someone shooting Chloe, Lucifer protected her with his wings: that is how Chloe, Ella and Trixie found out Lucifer is the devil.
Solving the last case also gave evidence Chloe was right about Palmetto: both Graham and Paolucci took bribes. Lucifer and Chloe just found a 999 key at Palmetto…
Chapter seven: What are you
Chloe lowered her phone and turned her eyes to Lucifer. "First day after Palmetto nobody reported a key missing. Second day after Palmetto two LAPD members reported their 999 key missing. One of them…" She held her breath.
"Yes?" Lucifer asked.
"…was Dan."
"And the other one?"
Chloe gritted her teeth, shook her head. "An officer from another precinct. A uni from a traffic division who had nothing to do with drug gangs."
"Well…" He raised his eyebrows.
"Dan told me to drop it, said I hallucinated, I would damage the reputation of the LAPD. He supported Paolucci. He…" She closed her eyes.
"But while he killed Malcolm Graham, he saved your life," Lucifer said.
"He saved my life?" she almost shouted.
"Malcolm's soul told me he had seen you and was reaching for his gun to shoot you."
"Are you defending Dan?"
Lucifer gave it a thought. "Strangely, yes. The douche deserves to be punished for how he treats you. But you should also realize, he did safe your life."
In the precinct Dan was sitting at his desk. Chloe saw him looking up as soon as she and Lucifer came in and walked to his desk. Dan's lips were trembling, he fiddled with his fingers. She showed him the plastic bag with the 999 key. "Come with us."
She went for a conference room. She could feel Lucifer following her. She didn't check for Dan, but when she turned in the conference room, Dan had followed also.
"There was a latch, Dan. And below it we found this key. Any idea who's key it might be?" she asked as soon as Lucifer had closed the door.
"How should I know?"
"I can have it checked for fingerprints."
He turned pale. "My key was stolen."
"You didn't report it as stolen, only as lost."
"I have no idea when it was stolen or by who."
"Daniel," Lucifer whispered and stepped closer. "Daniel." Their eyes met, Dan swallowed and froze.
"What do you desire, Daniel? What do you really hope to come true?"
"I wish I had never taken that surfboard," Dan stammered. "I can only hope Paolucci won't tell anyone."
"A surfboard?" Chloe asked. "You had an expensive new surfboard half a year ago. I remember asking you how you could afford it."
Dan sank in a chair, arms stretched on the table, his head down. "I took it. The Wideman case. The suspect was a surfer and after he was arrested that board was potential evidence and seized. But I took it out of the evidence room."
Chloe had to dig deep in her memory. "But… that suspect was released later. Not the killer."
"Yes. He reported the board stolen."
"But you had that board?" Chloe snapped.
"Yes! Don't tell me. Yes, bloody hell. The devil made me do it!"
"Me?" Lucifer gave him a bewildered look. "Detective douche, why would I? I didn't even know you're surfing."
Dan didn't react to that, but continued to Chloe: "Malcolm had seen me taking it with me and he threatened to ruin my career. I had to back up his and Anthony's actions."
"Give back the surfboard to the real owner and let Malcolm and Tony drop dead," Lucifer advised. "Well, Malcolm did already."
Dan glared at Lucifer. "They have pictures of me with it." He dropped his head again.
"You stole something Dan. From the LAPD, from the surfer!"
"I know! I regret! I really do. I sorry! But what if Tony gets arrested and talks?"
"Mm. Still Lucifer is right. Give the board back before Tony is arrested and the damage will be less than if you still have the board."
"And then? If Tony still talks and shows that picture?"
Chloe walked to the door. "I don't know, Dan. I only hope Trixie will not suffer from your… whatever this is. Just pray to god he will help you."
"God?" Dan muttered. "Is that all you can offer me? Talking to nothing won't help."
"O, dad is more than nothing," Lucifer said. "But he will ignore you."
Chloe turned to Lucifer. "I want to pray to him to protect Trixie from this. How should I do that?"
"Just fold your hands and say the words in your head." Lucifer shook his head. "But he never listens, never answers."
Dan looked confused and lost to Chloe. Then he raised. "I'm going to get rid of that board."
Dan had left the precinct. Chloe didn't know what he exactly wanted to do with the surfboard. Lucifer had an appointment with Linda Martin, his therapist. So Chloe was alone at her desk finish paperwork, when she got a whatsapp message from Lucifer. 'Linda would also like to hear Chopin's polonaise. Ok if she joins the party?'
'Of course. It is your party,' she answered.
At half past five Chloe was home to pick up Trixie. Ella was going to bring father Frank to the Lux and Lucifer was in the penthouse to prepare his piano rehearsal party.
At home Chloe didn't find Trixie with her sitter, but Trixie together with her mother Penelope. "I sent Julia away. Don't be afraid, I payed her and tipped her well. I just thought it was time for another family diner. See how you and Dan are doing."
"Trixie and I are going out tonight, mom."
"Yes. Trixie told me. I had called Dan and he didn't answer, so I sent him an invite by text, but then Trixie said you and her are going to a nightclub? Honey, she is only eight. That is not legal."
"We are not going to a nightclub, but to a friend's home above that nightclub."
"And Trixie said the guy is called Lucifer and she thinks he is the devil. Is he insane?"
"His name is Lucifer Morningstar and he is the owner of that nightclub, the Lux, and he is also a civilian consultant for the LAPD and my partner. We solve cases together, mom."
"And you're dating?"
"He took me and Trixie to eat ice cream and he made us diner once and tonight he is going to play the piano for us, but also for a few more people."
"And Dan?"
"Dan is my past."
"And Lucifer is your future," her mother concluded. "Well, he plays the piano for you."
"Are you also coming, nana?" Trixie asked.
"I'm not invited, little pumpkin," Penelope said.
Trixie took out her phone and typed something.
"What are you doing, monkey?" Chloe asked.
"I'm asking Lucifer to invite nana."
"No, no. You can't do that."
"I already did, mommy." Seconds later Trixie's phone beeped and Trixie smiled. "It's ok if nana also comes."
So Chloe ended up entering the parking garage of the Lux together with her mother and daughter. Parking space B12 on the second floor should be hers and was indeed empty. More amazing: a sign said: 'reserved Chloe Decker'. Of course her mother noticed.
"You have your own parking spot? How often do you come her?"
"I have never seen it before. It's the first time I park here," Chloe assured her.
"But he gave you your own spot…" Penelope took a deep breath.
Ella's car passed and moved into space B05. Chloe introduced father Frank to her mother and daughter and the five walked to the elevator.
Chloe had tried to guess how Lucifer would react on her mother: not interested, cocky, condescending, flirtatious, everything was possible. But his reaction the moment the elevator door opened startled her.
"No! Really! Detective, you should have told me," he bursted out before she could introduce them. "As I live and breath, Penelope Decker! The famous actress, the vampire queen! She is your mother?"
Elle and Father Frank were a step behind them, Linda and also Maze were standing at the bar. They all looked at Lucifer greeting Penelope.
"You know me?" Penelope asked with a happy smile."
"Mrs Decker, I've seen all your movies. I was at the premiere of Last Blood, of Althea, and that of Vampires in Hell."
"You really were?"
"I remember you wearing a yellow and silver dress at the premiere of Last Blood and your producer spilling a glass of red wine over it."
Penelope frowned and slowly nodded. "Yes. I had forgotten, but yes… That was Carl Noether. He indeed ruined my dress."
Lucifer kissed both her hands. "And now I meet the queen of the 80's science fiction." He turned to Chloe, also kissed both her hands and asked: "What drinks can I get for the three Decker women?"
He had non-alcoholic drinks for Trixie, he had Chloe's favorite wine. He asked father Frank what he wanted: "What can the devil pour for a priest?"
"Does the devil has enough of the wine he poured detective Decker?"
"O ho. I have no idea how much the detective will drink tonight, but I have eight bottles of this wine." Both men looked at Chloe.
"I will never drink eight bottles, Lucifer."
He had some light snacks for them to eat, then played the piano for them "not yet Chopin". After more food he asked father Frank to play, which ended in the devil and the priest playing four hands together, laughing and challenging the other.
"You think they are ready for the Empress' polonaise, detective?" he asked when he and Frank had finished.
Chloe was surprised. "Am I the one in charge for that?"
He slightly bent to her and whispered: "You're in charge of everything, detective."
He played the polonaise twice. Then there was more food and drinks, talking and piano play. Chloe noticed that Trixie talked a lot with Maze, the two of them sitting together on the sofa. At half past eight, Chloe decided it was time to go home. It was already late for Trixie.
At half past ten Trixie was asleep, her mother had gone home and she was on the sofa, thinking the evening over. Linda had seen Lucifer's face. It just came up as something Maze had said some days ago. It hadn't made sense then. It still didn't make sense: everyone could see Lucifer's face. But Maze had related it to Linda knowing Lucifer well. Chloe frowned. That was before she knew Lucifer was the devil and she now realized Linda knows him well, must mean Linda knows Lucifer is the devil. Linda knows too. But what had knowing to do with seen his face. And seen Maze' face, Maze also said that.
She took her phone and called Lucifer. "… when I first met Linda, Maze said she had seen your face. What did Maze mean with those words?"
He was silent for some seconds. "I better come over to your house, detective."
Five minutes later there was a knock on her door. "Lucifer? How did you get here that quick?"
"I flew, detective. Wings, remember." He looked serious, nervous even. They said on sofa and she explained why she asked.
"I have two faces," he explained. "The one you know see and another one, my devil face. Red scalded flesh, no hair, blisters and scars all over. Red shining eyes that burns with the fire of hell. My devil face. It gives nightmares to humans."
She stared at him, trying to imagine. After a shiver and a deep breath she asked: "Can you show me?"
"Detective! It is to frighten people. I don't want to frighten you."
"But you showed Linda."
"That was wrong, she didn't want to see me for two weeks."
Chloe gave it a thought. He didn't speak, only looked at the floor in front of him.
"I thought you wanted us to have a serious date," she said.
"I do, detective. I'm really looking forward to Saturday."
"To learn each other better," she said. "But to learn you better, I need to know your devil face also."
"But it will scare you. Linda panicked."
"Did you warn her upfront? Tell her what to expect?"
"No," he admitted. "But why…"
"I need to see it Lucifer," she repeated. "And I know what to expect."
Now he was thinking it over. He slowly raise and walked to the door. "I will show you. And if you panic or scream, I will leave and I will not contact you unless you contact me. I promise, detective. I will leave if I see it's too much for you."
She nodded, also raised. He was standing at the door, his hand on the knob. They looked at each other. He shook his head, took a deep breath and then his face changed. Red scalded flesh, blisters and scars, as he had said. His eyes pools of fire.
Her eardrums crackled, her stomach clenched, her knees weakened. For a moment she felt as she was going to black out. He moved the knob to open the door.
"Lucifer." Her voice squeaked. She could't understand the sounds herself. He was going to leave, but she had asked for this. "Lucifer." This time it came out clear.
He had opened the door and had already turned. He froze in the movement. "Lucifer, come back in."
He looked half over his shoulder, his face back to the handsome human face. "Detective? Are you sure?"
"Yes." She walked towards him, grabbed his arm and pulled him back. "Tell me about this face."
They talked on the sofa, her arms around his waist, his arms around her shoulders. At midnight they were interrupted by a text message. "Tony Paolucci is arrested," Chloe said.
"I will go home," he said.
"Can't you stay. To sleep."
He looked at her eyebrows raised.
"To sleep in your arms. No sex."
"To sleep in my arms." He kissed her.
Next morning Dan was already in when Chloe and Lucifer entered the precinct. He was tensed and came to her immediately. "They have Tony."
"I know, Dan," she said.
"Two lieutenants of the Internal Affairs Department are interrogating him."
"Of course."
"What if he mentions me?"
"Where is that surfboard?"
"Back to the owner. I had put it at his front door and left. I watched from my car until he came out and found it."
"Than there is nothing more you can do," Chloe said.
Dan went back to his desk, did something on his computer but it didn't look as working.
Halfway the morning, Chloe was called to lieutenant Monroe's office. Although not invited Lucifer went with her.
"You're involved in the Palmetto, Graham and Paolucci affair," Olivia started. "O, in the right way, don't get me wrong. So I want to keep you updated. You know the IAD is interviewing Paolucci."
Chloe nodded.
"They stopped. They had to stop. Paolucci is transferred to a mental hospital. During the arrest tonight he hit an iron bar with his head. There are things he doesn't remember. He still knows Aoudi and Bahamontes. He knows he sold information to both. But he doesn't remember any of his colleagues. Not me, nor you, nor Graham, nor any of us."
"Strange," Chloe said. "Does he fake it? To claim mental disorder once in court?"
"We don't know. That is why he is sent to the hospital."
As soon as they had left the lieutenant's office Lucifer said: "What a coincidence. Now he can't accuse the douche. As you prayed, remember. What are you, detective?"
"What do you mean?"
"You really don't know what I mean?" He grabbed her shoulders and looked her into her eyes, at least a dozen seconds long. "No. I sense you speak the truth. You really don't know."
