To refresh your mind: Delilah was never murdered. Chloe and Lucifer met at the Gillian Taylor case, what was in the canon season two, episode one.

Lucifer never left hell, he is dividing his time between hell and Lux.

Ella en Chloe became roommates.

When someone shot Chloe, Lucifer protected her with his wings: that is how Chloe, Ella and Trixie found out Lucifer is the devil. All three ladies took that reveal well when they next morning discussed it during a breakfast Satan made in Chloe's kitchen…

Lucifer also realized Chloe is something special: immune to his powers and his dad listens to her prayer. Chloe prefers to think that last fact was just coincidence.

Previous chapter was Wesley Cabot case. Dan is on his way to Ryan Goldburg, Chloe and Lucifer just found out Ryan is the murderer, but when they call Dan, he doesn't answer his phone.

Chapter nine:Free will

"Wrong?" Lucifer echoed.

"We have to check on him." Chloe just knew Dan was in trouble, but they had this Jamie Adrienne arrested. "We need to get her to the precinct also."

"We don't know were Daniel is."

"Maybe. I guess at the house of that manager Ryan Goldberg."

"You take Jamie to the precinct," Lucifer proposed. "I go to see what is happening in mr Goldberg's home." He had his phone in his hand and was searching the address with his maps application. "Apartment building. Small. Four floors and Ryan lives on the top floor. Balcony at the south. I go."

"We only have one car. I call for assistance."

Lucifer already walked to the door. "Wings, remember," he said while leaving the apartment. "Balconies are great. Be there in a few minutes."

Chloe was left lightly shocked and confused after Lucifer had departed. Then she took a deep breath and looked at the sobbing and trembling Jamie. Nothing she could do: even if she was going to leave Jamie unattended and ran for her car, Lucifer would be at Ryan's apartment long before she would. She pushed Jamie to that car, put her in the back and headed for the precinct. She bite nails, frustrated by the loss of time and nervous about what might be happening at Ryan's place. Her phone rang.

"Lucifer?"

"Yes, detective. Gliding down to Ryan's. Apartment is on fire."

"What?"

"Almost landed."

She heard sounds, breaking glass, Lucifer's voice saying something. Crackling of burning fire. Stumbling. Again something breaking. Then silence apart from wind flowing past the microphone of his mobile.

"Lucifer?" she shouted.

"Bringing Daniel to the roof of the next building, detective." His voice came from some distance of the mobile. "He seems unharmed."

Wings flapped, a soft bump, Lucifer's voice again. "You have the keys of those cuffs, Daniel?"

"What?" That was Dan's voice, hardly hearable.

"Forget it," Lucifer said after a short silence. "Take my phone and update the detective. I'm going to get that other person."

"Lucifer!" Chloe shouted in her phone. There came no reaction. "Dan!"

"He has wings," Dan whispered.

"What happened, Dan?"

"He has wings."

"Are you ok, Dan?"

"He has wings," was again the only reaction.

"Detective Espinoza," she said.

"What?"

"Detective Espinoza. Case. Please report what happened."

"I… He put on a fire. I was bound, handcuffs."

It was not exactly a clear and concise report, but at least it was something else than he has wings. "Who put on a fire, Dan?"

"Kimo van Zandt."

"How did he come…"

"He comes." Dan suddenly shouted again. "He is flying. He has wings,"

It didn't take Chloe much to imagine what was happening on Dan's side. Lucifer had gone to pick up a second person from the burning apartment and very likely was now coming back with whoever that person was. "O, my God," she murmured. "Don't let me deal with two men in panic for his wings."

"You have wings," Dan said, not in the phone this time.

"Yes, Daniel," she could just hear Lucifer saying. "And now they are put away. Better? Did you update the detective?"

"Wings…"

"Give me the phone. Ok. Detective?" Lucifer's voice became clear with those last two words.

"What happened, Lucifer?"

"As you know, I saw the apartment on fire. I went in and found two men on the floor, both were bound. One was Dan, who is still looking at me eyes wide and mouth open as a goldfish that has fallen out of his bowl, and some guy I don't know. I first brought Dan to the flat roof of the next building and then picked up the second man."

"Who is the second guy?" Chloe asked.

"He was and still is unconscious, but he is breathing. Daniel, please attention for your case. Who is this?"

"You have wings," she heard Dan answer.

"O, bollocks. You talk with him, detective."

Apparently Lucifer had given the phone to Dan again for now Dan's voice came clear: "Chlo', he has wings."

"I know Lucifer has wings, Dan. White glowing wings. I have seen them before."

"What? You know? Chlo', don't you understand what that means?"

"That he never lied about what he is, Dan. He always tells everyone he is the devil and he is. It is just us that think he is an actor."

"He will take you to hell. He will take me to hell."

"He will not, Dan. He is my partner, my best friend and you are a detective with a case to solve, detective Espinoza. Who is that second person?"

After some seconds of silence, Dan answered: "Ryan. Ryan Goldburg."

"And what has Kimo van Zandt to do with it?"

She heard Dan take some deep breaths. "I came at the apartment. Kimo van Zandt answered the door and he said Ryan was not at home. He invited me in, suddenly hold up a gun and telling me to turn. He must have hit me on the head. Next thing I remember I was on the ground and bound. I told him to release me, he said I had bad luck."

Dan went silent again, then whispered: "You knew. You think he is your friend."

"He is, Dan," Chloe answered. "What about bad luck?"

"This Ryan is still unconscious," Lucifer interrupted.

"Can you get him from the roof down to the street?" Chloe asked.

"Of course, detective. There is a stairway from the roof down into the building. Else I would not have chosen this roof." Lucifer sounded a bit offended. "I will carry him down, than Daniel can continue his story."

She heard sounds, a door, footsteps. "Dan?" she asked. "Bad luck?"

"Kimo was going to kill Ryan because Ryan had killed Wesley and Kimo was going to revenge him. I should not have come to witness, Kimo said. While I was bound on the floor my phone rang twice. Kimo took it and broke it. A minute later Ryan came home and Kimo knocked him on the head. He also cuffed Ryan's hands. He started that fire and left and then… You knew. He is…"

"I'm almost at the precinct," Chloe interrupted him. "Going to deliver Jamie. You should call an ambulance if Ryan is still unconscious."

"My phone is lost," Dan answered. "I can't call."

"You have Lucifer's phone. The one you're talking in at the moment."

Dan and Lucifer arrived in the precinct half an hour later. They had Ryan Goldburg with them. "He opened his eyes just after you finished the call," Lucifer explained.

"How did Dan react after the call?" Chloe whispered, looking at a pale Dan that was delivering Ryan to a colleague.

"He didn't say a word. He drove, I was sitting next to Ryan in the back."

"Did Ryan see your wings?"

Lucifer shook his head. "He was out all the time between me stepping into his apartment and reaching the street level with him."

"Thank god," Chloe said.

"I don't think dad cared," Lucifer said.

Chloe smiled for a second. Then she frowned; she had asked his dad to not let her deal with two men in panic… But that was after Kimo had already knocked Ryan down, so it couldn't be related. She hold her breath for a second. Could it? No, again it had to be just a coincidence. Dan came to her desk, looking anxious at Lucifer

"So," Lucifer said. "To summarize: Ryan and Jamie took money from Wesley and Kimo?"

"Looks like," Chloe said. "Wesley found out Ryan did, told Jamie and Kimo, not knowing Jamie was in with Ryan. Jamie told Ryan. Ryan killed Wesley. Kimo wanted to revenge Wesley by killing Ryan."

"And our Daniel just had the bad luck of walking in at the wrong time," Lucifer finished the summary.

"Why are you here?" Dan asked. "What do you want from my wife?"

"Your wife?" Lucifer asked with his brows raised. He shrugged and answered: "I'm here to help your ex-wife. What else?"

"He saved your life, Dan," Chloe added to it. "And helped to solve your case."

"But he is…" Dan was still looking pale and shivering. Before he could say more, Ella did come out of her lab and hugged first Chloe and then Lucifer.

"Another case solved," she said. "So time for something important. Did you already ask him what to wear?"

A bit confused Chloe blinked her eyes. "Yes. No. I mean: we did not yet discuss that. No."

Ella turned to Lucifer. "You should have given her a hint by now."

"What do you mean, miss Lopez?"

"You really know nothing about dating, do you? I hope you have planned something. For instance, if you plan a walk along the beach, she needs comfy shoes and maybe swimming clothes. If you take her to a concert she needs a dress and high heels. Whatever you plan, don't tell it, but give a hint on what to wear."

"Dating?" Dan stammered.

"They plan a date tomorrow," Ella said to him. "I told Chloe to ask what to wear, but apparently she did not. Not yet."

Ella looked at Lucifer.

"Well," he said, taking a deep breath. "A bit what she is wearing right now… I…" He frowned and slowly nodded. "I understand. Well…"

"Elegant pumps?" Ella pressed on.

"O, no." Lucifer shook his head. "We will… be walking a bit. Uphill for maybe a mile and really off road. Or… Maybe, yes. Pumps. I will provide boots for the detective and take those pumps with me. Also a bit downhill and than after she can wear the pumps when we have diner."

"Boots?" Chloe asked.

"Date?" Dan asked again.

"Don't say too much," Ella said to Lucifer. "And clothes?"

"Definitely no dress or skirt." He turned to Chloe. "Jeans. I have everything to wear over that ready."

"Boots and everything to wear over that? I really wonder…" Chloe started.

"Don't give it away," Ella warned and gave Lucifer another hug. "Chloe, just call or text me as soon as you arrive at wherever you go. I want to know as soon as possible."

"I don't think we will have mobile coverage for the first hour or so," Lucifer said. "Not before we reach the restaurant."

"What?" Chloe asked.

"Where…" Ella started and then shook her head.

"Date?" Dan persisted.

"I just told you," Ella answered a bit annoyed. "Tomorrow."

"But he is…" Dan closed his mouth.

"Dan saw his wings," Chloe whispered to Ella. "Lucifer saved him from a burning house."

"Ella knows?" Dan almost shouted. Colleagues around looked up.

"Keep your voice down," Chloe hissed. "Yes, she does, come." She grabbed Dan's arm and pulled him to Ella's lab. Ella and Lucifer followed.

"She knows. You know. He will take us…"

"He saved your live," Chloe interrupted him.

"Why?"

"For the detective, for your offspring," Lucifer answered. "I don't fancy telling the urchin her father died."

"Trixie!" Dan shouted. "You want her soul."

"O, dad." Lucifer sighed. He rolled his eyes and dropped in a chair. "There we go again."

"He does not," Ella said. "He saved you, he saved Chloe and I think he also saved Trix."

"What? How?"

Ella pushed Dan in a chair and told him how Bahamontes had tried to shoot Chloe. It ended with Dan staring at the table and whispering. "I should thank you?" He didn't look at Lucifer while saying it.

"Yes, you should," Ella said.

"Thanks." He still didn't look at Lucifer.

Saturday their date was planned. Trixie would be with Dan and Chloe had promised to app her as soon as she could use her phone.

"Where can he go so that you have no mobile coverage?" Dan asked when he came to pick up Trixie. "Are you sure it is safe?"

"I am, Dan."

"What does it mean there is no coverage? What if he takes you to hell?"

"There are no restaurants in hell," Chloe answered.

"Maybe to a ship on the ocean," Trixie said.

"For that destination boots wouldn't make sense," Ella said. "More in the mountains, but that's a long drive."

An hour after Dan and Trixie had left, the corvette parked in front of Chloe's house. Lucifer came out with in his left hand a large, filled backpack and in his right his phone and what looked as a smaller, empty backpack.

Chloe rushed to the door to open it and heard him say: "...all in the sky?… Then we take Nordvagen, Maze. You can cancel the other three… yes. I know…. Nine hours difference… Doesn't matter. It's dark anyway. Bye. Hi, detective."

He lowered the phone, dropped the two backpacks and kissed her hand. "I brought the right clothing." Ella also came and Chloe and Ella looked at the snow boots, winter clothes and balaclava he took out of the large backpack. "You go… Somewhere cold?" Ella asked.

"Indeed. We dress up, detective, and we go."

"How…"

"We fly, detective. Our shoes in the small backpack. These trousers and jackets over our clothes. It will be below ten Fahrenheit where we land."

He brought her to the north of Norway, in Europe. "Ten pm local time, detective," he said when he set her in the snow. "Sunset was five hours ago. So it should be dark." He smiled.

It wasn't dark. They were standing on a snowed slope between trees. The pure white snow would most likely have given enough light to see, but it was the sky that was overwhelming. Chloe looked up, mouth open, in wonder. The sky was filled with green curtains and red and blue dots that were slowly dancing above them. "The Northern Lights, detective," he whispered. "We walk up hill to get a better view."

He guided her through the pristine snow to the hill summit where she had a clear view of the sky. After half an hour and taking many pictures with their phones he said: "Shall we go on, detective. Down that direction." He pointed and she saw a building with light behind the windows.

It appeared to be a restaurant where Lucifer had reserved a table. They took off the winter clothes and boots and put on their shoes.

"It was wonderful, Lucifer," she said. She sent a few of her own pictures and one picture Lucifer had taken of her face lighted by the Northern Light to Ella and Trixie. After hesitating shortly she sent one to Dan also.

"We had some luck," Lucifer admitted. "The lights are great this evening."

"What would you have done if they were not?"

"I had three other restaurants reserved in kind alike places," he said. "On Greenland, on Iceland and in Russia. I had them all reporting to Maze on how the Lights were locally."

"All just for me?"

"Just for you? Detective!" He took her hand and kissed it. "Giving you a perfect date is the only priority for me."

Why me, was what she almost asked, but she decided not to say it. "You have been here before on other dates?"

"As I told you, I have never been on a date. I had sex each night, but never dated."

In de background there was a life band playing and after some songs she realized it were all favorites of her from the eighties. "You told them what to play?"

"Of course. I checked with miss Lopez and the urchin on what you like."

A waiter brought them wine and an amuse. The man explained in Norwegian what it was, what Lucifer translated for her. They talked between the courses: about music, the eighties, movies, dates, her father, his siblings and his fall. It turned out to be a seven-course diner.

"… of course I checked. Your dad is not in hell, so he is in heaven."

"Can he look down on us?"

"That is not how it works. Souls are not walking on clouds. I checked with my sister Saraquel and your dad has a cabin close to a river bank were he can go fishing and he plays a lot of horseshoe throwing." That was just after the soup. "He is proud of you."

"… The first five thousand years – measured on Earth, for times goes different in hell – I stayed down there, as dad had ordered. But I became angry, annoyed, sad, frustrated and one day I just flew to Earth and disrupted a battle that was just going on. Amenadiel, my eldest brother, came and ordered me back." That he told her during a roll with salmon, cream cheese and salad. "He still does once a month or so, saying I should stay in hell full time. I simply ignore the fool."

"So it was all about free will?" Chloe asked during the last course: ice with a rich and creamy yellow liquor and chocolate sauce.

"Yes. Dad gave it to you humans and not to us."

"No storming heaven to overthrow your dad?"

"It was just me alone in front of his working room talking with dad. I admit I shouted, but that was all."

They landed on the balcony of Lux' penthouse at ten o'clock. "I have nothing planned after, detective. We can get a drink in the Lux or I can bring you home."

"Or we can stay in the penthouse," she said.

He smiled. "If that is allowed by the rules you humans put on dating, it would be marvelous. So you want a drink?"

"Just some water. I'm not planning any other drinks."

"Oh?"

She laid her arms around his waist and put her face against his shoulder. "Did Maze tell the truth? Did you not sleep with anyone since Ella and I visited the Lux?"

"That's true," he whispered.

"Why?" She could guess his answer, but wanted him to say it.

"You expect the guy you're dating to go for a monogamous, exclusive relation."

"You will get bored by just me."

"Give me the change to prove I will not. Let's do the two more dates as soon as possible."

She looked up to his face. "Two more dates? Why?"

"Ella explained me about no sex for the third date."

"Did she? You're not dating Ella."

"No, detective. I'm dating you."

"And I never talked about a three date rule." She turned him around and slowly pushed him in the direction of his bedroom. "Free will, you know. That's what we humans have to ignore rules on dating."

"That's why I also wanted free will." He laughed, lifted her in his arms and carried her to his bed.

Next morning he brought her breakfast in bed. For that he had a large tray with legs under it which he could place over them when they sat next to each other against the cushions. He had brought almost everything she could imagine to take as breakfast. "What I don't get…"

"Yes, detective."

"Angels follow your dad's orders."

"Always. No free will."

"Your dad ordered you to rule hell and stay there?"

"He did. Exactly."

"But you don't obey him, you nowadays spend more time in LA than in hell."

"Of course. You have seen hell, well two spots of it. Would you want to live there?"

"But you choose to do differently. Doesn't that show you have free will?"

He stopped eating and stared at the wall. "Free… I… Only after many thousand years I decided to ignore his orders, detective."

"So it took you many thousand years to develop free will? But you did, you choose."

Slowly Lucifer started to grin. "You think. I bet dad didn't expect this to…" The grin disappeared from his face and he frowned. "Or did he…"
