"Can people come back from the dead?" asks Sophie. They are on their way to the memorial, Kendall and Roman in the middle of the car, the kids in the back.
"Sure," says Roman. Kendall glares at him. "I mean, technically," says Roman hastily. "Sometimes, if someone's heart stops, they can do CPR — that's where they pump on the chest, like this," Roman demonstrates the motion with his hands. "And their heart starts working again. So they were technically dead, but only for a few minutes. And sometimes, if somebody drowns—" Kendall really wishes he would shut up. "They can pump the chest until all the water comes back up, and hey presto, they're alive again."
"Cool!" says Sophie.
"Did they do CPR on Grandpa?" asks Iverson, not looking up from his tablet.
"Yeah, they did," says Kendall. "But it didn't work."
"Because he didn't have a heart. I'm just kidding." Kendall glares at Roman again.
"So is Grandpa in heaven now?" asks Sophie.
"Nah," says Roman. "Assuming there is an afterlife, he's in the bad place for sure."
"Will you stop fucking talking?" says Kendall through gritted teeth. "He's joking, you guys."
The car arrives at what is now Connor and Willa's home. Kendall looks to see if Tom and Shiv have arrived yet. It will be the first time he's seen Shiv since he lost the company.
"You ready for this?" Roman asks Kendall.
"No," he replies. "Let's do this."
