Once Dawn entered the bathroom in the nearly empty hallway, May quickly locked the main door and pulled the phone out of her pocket, making sure no one could walk in on them as Dawn smiled excitedly.
"You got it?!" she squealed.
"Yeah." May nodded as she punched in Drew's passcode and unlocked the screen. Dawn eagerly looked over her shoulder as May scrolled to the text messaging app.
"Let's find those text messages." the girls opened up the app and looked through the recent list of conversations. To very little surprise, they found that the top conversion, the most recent one, was an exchange with Ash.
"Jackpot…" May whispered as she opened the text thread and both girls started reading the most recent text exchange, which from the timestamps they could tell happened the morning she and Ash bumped into each other.
Drew: What happened back there? Why were you talking to her?
Ash: It was an accident...we just ran into each other.
Drew: We talked about this. You have to stay away from her.
Ash: I know that...and I fully intend to do that...I can't hurt her...not again...
Drew: As long as we stick with this she won't ever be hurt again.
Ash: I hope that's true...I'm trusting you to take care of her...
Drew: I will. There's no doubt there.
May's throat went dry as she read the exchange and Dawn placed a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her.
"So they do have some kind of an agreement…" she whispered.
"It sure sounds like it…" Dawn nodded in agreement. "But what did Ash mean about hurting you?"
"I don't know…" May sighed. "He'd never hurt me…"
"At least not on purpose…maybe they're talking about the accident? Maybe they were both involved somehow?"
"Maybe…but if they were there then why aren't either of them injured at all? And I know for a fact that Ash doesn't drink. He doesn't even like the smell of alcohol…" May pointed out.
"I know...I'm not entirely sure either. Maybe try older conversations…? You said they never run in the same crowds so maybe their very first conversation will give us more clues." Dawn offered.
"Worth a shot…" May agreed as she hit the button that takes her to the very top of the conversation thread.
"Hey check it out. The oldest message is from the day after your accident." Dawn realized, pointing at the message timestamp.
"Sure enough…" May whispered as she began reading the messages.
Drew: Ash? This is Drew. I got your number from May's phone.
Ash: Is she awake...?
Drew: No...
Ash: Oh...then what do you want...?
Drew: I'm letting you know that May's family and friends are meeting with me to discuss what happens next when she wakes up. I think you should be there.
Ash: But...
Drew: I know what we already talked about things. But I want to fully iron out the details with everyone so we can all work together for her.
Ash: ...Ok...
"They talked before this conversation? That had to have been the night of the accident." Dawn realized.
"What would they have been talking about that night? Especially since I went to the dance with Ash…?" the distressed brunette asked.
"I don't know…" Dawn sighed. "Is there anything else in there?"
"Hang on." May answered as she quickly scrolled through the rest of the conversations between Ash and Drew. There were only a handful of others, but each just continued to affirm that both of them agreed that Ash would stay away from her without going into specifics. "Dang it…"
"Maybe there's something else in there we can get clues from? Like pictures or voicemails?" the bluenette offered an alternative.
"Right…" May nodded as she opened up the voicemail app and began looking through the inbox.
"There's one." Dawn pointed out. "Dated the day you came back to school."
"Please be something useful…" she mumbled as she hit play and Ash's recorded voice came through the phone's speaker.
"Hey Drew...it's Ash. I'm assuming you already know about May's memory loss...but look you don't have to worry. I'm not going to use it as an excuse to try and get back together with her...I agreed that I'd stay away from her to keep her safe and that's what I intend to do...if anything it'll make it easier on her if she doesn't remember we ever dated...just please...please take good care of her...ok bye…" he explained before he hung up. The room remained quiet as May lowered the phone in her hand, tearing up.
"Oh, May…" Dawn whispered as she wrapped her friend in a hug.
"Why are they doing this to me…?" she mumbled as the tears slid down her cheeks.
"It's not fair I know…" Dawn assured her as she rubbed her friend's back. "But we're so close...don't lose hope yet…"
"Right…" she muttered under her breath. The two stayed still for a little while longer under Dawn slowly released May from the embrace.
"We should head back before the guys get worried…" she reminded May, who simply nodded in response, drying her eyes as best she could. Dawn gave her one more hug for support and the two of them headed back into the dance. Dawn made her way over to Kenny to resume her date for now, while May stood in the doorway, hurting badly and unsure of what to do. After a moment, she noticed Drew waving her over. Before she could stop herself, she ran into his arms and began crying into his chest. He caught her with a hint of surprise, wrapping his arms around her.
"You ok May?"
"I'm fine…I just need a minute…" she whispered, keeping her face hidden in his chest.
"I understand…I'm here for you." Drew promised as he stroked her back, allowing her to cry into his suit without a word. May's inner thoughts were in complete turmoil. She missed Ash dearly, yet she also really did enjoy Drew's company. She was angry at both of them for keeping secrets from her, but she also longed for the familiar and loving friendship she had with each of them. She just didn't know what to do. And in the height of her frustration, she suddenly felt Drew kiss her forehead. She slowly lifted her head and looked up at him. His emerald eyes were filled with concern for her, and in her confusion, May let herself speak without thinking.
"You missed…" her comment made him chuckle.
"My mistake." he joked as he then proceeded to kiss her lips instead. May kissed him back and Drew held her close, allowing a soft moan to pass between them. May knew it was wrong, and even while doing it she felt horrible. She didn't love Drew. She still loved Ash. Despite knowing in her brain how wrong it was to take advantage of Drew this way, she just needed to feel like someone besides Dawn cared about her, even if it was only for a moment. It was only when Drew's tongue moved into her mouth and began to battle her tongue did she snap out of it and refocused herself before it went any further. She battled his tongue back, but only to distract him as she slipped the phone back into his pocket unnoticed. No sooner had she done so, than Drew slowly pulled his lips away for air, leaving both teens panting. "You're the most wonderful girl I've ever met May…"
"You're…something else yourself…" she replied as she blushed bright red.
"Shall we hit the dance floor again?" he offered.
"Sure…" she nodded, prompting Drew to lead her back out into the crowd.
Later on that night, after what felt like an eternity, Drew finished dancing to the last song with May, dipping her gently and smiling at her as the band thanked everyone and wished them all a good night. May gave him a small smile back as he then helped her back up.
"Looks like we're one of the last ones here." he commented.
"Guess so." she agreed.
"Then please allow me to take you home my lady." he chuckled.
"Thank you kind sir." she said with a giggle of her own. Drew then took her hand in his and walked her to his car. They both got in and started driving back towards May's house. They were both quiet for a moment before May decided to try and clear the air as much as she could. "Thanks for tonight…I had fun."
"Of course. I had a good night too." he replied. He reached a hand over and squeezed her hand lovingly for emphasis, and May couldn't help but smile at the sweet gesture. He smiled back as they eventually pulled into her driveway where he then opened the door for her and helped her out of the car.
"See ya around." she said politely as she turned to go inside, but Drew's grip on her hand tightened a little, stopping her gently.
"Before you go…" he whispered. She turned back towards him, only to be greeted by yet another kiss. Knowing this would be the last one of the night, May gave in one last time to her weakness and began to kiss him back. Drew ran his thumb along the back of her hand as his tongue entered her mouth and both of them shared a moan of delight. After a moment longer, they both pulled away and he smiled at her. "See you on Monday."
"Sounds good…" she said quietly with a nod. Flashing her one last smile, Drew got back into his car before driving off into the night. May stood alone in the driveway for a moment, before taking a deep breath and heading inside. She went up to her room where Glaceon was sleeping on her bed. She began undressing and getting ready for bed as her mind tried to make sense out of everything that had happened that night. Not only had she learned for sure that Ash and Drew were working together to keep the truth from her, but at the same time she had given in to the advances of another man, even though she knew that her heart belonged to Ash and Ash alone. And she didn't know the answer as to why for either question. She groaned to herself in frustration, which was just loud enough to wake Glaceon from her slumber.
"Gla…?"
"Oh…sorry Glaceon." she apologized. Glaceon simply shook out her fur and smiled at May.
"Gla!" she responded happily. May chuckled a little and plopped down on the bed next to her friend and stroked her fur.
"I hate to admit it…but I had a good time." she sighed, making Glaeon's ears perk up.
"Glace gla glaceon?" she asked. May still couldn't understand her, but she could make an educated guess about what the question was.
"Uh…well…I guess I'm feeling a little conflicted." she admitted.
"Gla?"
"I still love Ash with all my heart…but being out with Drew tonight…I don't know it made me feel really good…" she explained, causing Glaceon's eyes to widen in surprise.
"Eon?!"
"I don't know what to do…" she sighed as Glaceon nuzzled her for comfort. "I guess I'm just wondering if I'm doing the right thing pushing forward like this…it'd be so much easier if I could just love Drew the way I love Ash…if I just stopped digging…" her self reflection was suddenly interrupted when her cell started ringing, startling them both.
"Eon?" Glaceon wondered. May picked up her phone and she saw Dawn's number on the screen, so she answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Hey! You back home now?" Dawn asked.
"Yeah just getting ready for bed." she nodded.
"Great! So let's talk next steps. We got a lot of good info tonight." the bluenette started, but May quickly cut her off.
"Actually can we talk for a moment? I need to get something off my chest."
"What's up?"
"I'm starting to feel…conflicted." she admitted.
"Conflicted?"
"I'm just…starting to wonder if all this work we're doing is worth it…what if I just let it go and gave Drew a chance?" she wondered, making Dawn gasp in surprise.
"Wait what?! I thought you didn't like Drew that way!"
"I don't but….it's just this whole investigation is taking a toll on me Dawn…I'm hurting…" she explained sadly. Dawn was quiet on her end for a few moments, before she finally spoke up again.
"...I think you're just lonely." she declared.
"Lonely?"
"Think about it. You wake up after what, to you, was a normal night's sleep. Only to find that half your friends are hiding something from you and your best friend is completely avoiding you. Then you find out that you actually were in a relationship with the guy you always wanted, and now he wants nothing to do with you. Then to top it off, your previous best friend is interested in rekindling an even deeper relationship than you had before." she elaborated.
"What are you saying?" May questioned her.
"With all that emotional conflict going on at once, is it any wonder that you would gravitate towards the one person who is showing you the attention you wanted?" she pointed out.
"I didn't think of it that way…but what do I do…?" May asked.
"May I can't tell you what to do...ultimately it depends on what you want. If your long-term goal is to reunite with Ash, getting overly friendly with Drew is not going to help that...but if you want to forget all this and be with Drew...then I guess we can just end the investigation here." she laid everything on the table. May bit her lower lip, knowing she wouldn't make a solid decision tonight after everything that happened.
"I'll think on it…" she promised.
"Think quickly. The longer we wait to continue this investigation, the harder it'll be to find evidence." Dawn reminded her.
"Alright...I'll talk to you soon." May assured her.
"Alright…goodnight." Dawn sighed as she hung up the call. May set her phone aside and laid down in her bed, feeling just as lost as when she first woke up in that hospital room. Glaceon walked over and cuddled up into her arms, purring in an effort to cheer her up. It only did a little bit.
"What am I going to do Glaceon…?"
