The Amazon it is! Thanks for reviewing, Nicky Haugh.
Owen had a nightmare on our way to the next destination. "Going down...engine failure..."
"Will you pipe down already?" snapped Alejandro, nudging him.
"Crash position..." Owen cried out, his arms flailing around. Izzy, on one side of him, ducked his fist, but Alejandro got punched in the eye.
Owen finally woke up. "What a terrible dream! Al, what happened?"
"Nothing a little ice and revenge won't fix." Alejandro replied amiably.
"Cool." Owen said. "Wait...did you say revenge?"
"Of course not. Off-topic, do you have any serious allergies?"
"Let's see now..." Owen said thoughtfully.
I punched Owen's shoulder playfully. "This dude'll eat anything." I said. "He doesn't know the meaning of the word 'allergy'. I'm pretty sure he could eat poison ivy and he wouldn't suffer any effects."
For a split second, I thought I saw Alejandro scowl, but his face soon relaxed and the moment was over.
Chef gave Alejandro an eyepatch to wear until his black eye healed, which actually kind of suited him. He reminded me of one of those aristocratic European pirates from movies – the types that would kidnap wealthy unmarried women and princesses, but would treat them with the utmost respect and make sure that when returned (if returned), they would still be innocent, virtuous and healthy.
I started daydreaming about that, taking out my sketchbook and absentmindedly sketching a picture of myself as a young princess and Alejandro as a charming pirate captain, but making sure no one saw it.
I looked up from my picture when I heard Noah choking. He'd been asleep, and a rat had fallen into his mouth. "Stupid economy class!" he complained.
"Being back here has some perks." Tyler argued, smiling across the room at Lindsay, who waved.
I rolled my eyes. "Like we want to see you two flirting all day."
"Next time we get on this plane, we better be back in First Class." Alejandro stated.
"Yeah, cool!" Owen said, his voice with a nervous tone in it. "Let's be a team! A team that gets along, all of us, with everyone forgiving anything that may have happened by accident, or whatever. Yeah!"
I edged up close to Owen. "What's wrong?" I whispered.
"I'm worried that Al doesn't like me much...or at all." he whispered back. "I want him to like me."
I paused, and then remembered something. "I'll let you in on a secret." I told him softly. "I saw a confessional when Alejandro shuddered after saying he had no problem being called Al. I think he doesn't like the name."
Owen sighed. "But I can't pronounce his full name!"
I sighed too. "Well, you may be right that he doesn't like you. But there are some people who just don't. You'll have to deal with it. What I have gotten from what I know about him, he'll work with you for as long as he has to."
I had a snooze for the next hour, and only woke up when Chris' voice filtered through the speakers. "Brace for landing! We've arrived in our next destination – the Amazon, but the runway's a little short..." Now this was a place I'd never been to. According to Chris, they'd been to a few places I'd visited, like Japan and New York, but so far, I hadn't been to any places on the plane that I'd visited before, like Australia, India, China...
Chris' voice broke through my thoughts. "I hope none of the Amazons said this might be lucky for them! That'd be disastrous!"
Our challenge was simple: hike through the jungle to Macchu Picchu, an ancient structure left from the Inca empire. In there would be a golden treasure. The winners would be the ones who found it first. Sounds simple, right?
Well, Chris gave us some warnings. The jungle was too dangerous to travel at night, so we'd have to camp. And we also had to watch out for an ancient tribe called Zing-Zings, who had never encountered modern life.
Cody was given an epipen because of his allergies to insect bites, but Chris wouldn't let him carry it himself. Sierra volunteered immediately, but Chris ignored her and Cody gave Gwen puppy dog eyes until she offered to. And we all got walkie-talkies in case of emergency.
The first problem we came to was a fork in the road. Team Amazon was further behind, but Team Victory was just in front of us.
"Eeny, meeny, miney...left?" Lindsay suggested. She and DJ took off.
"What do you think, left?" Tyler suggested to our team. "Yeah, left. Left is definitely good." We had no choice but to follow him (although we lost Team Victory early on).
We met Chris at a zipline, but there was no T-bar. "Where's the hanging on thingy?" Tyler asked.
"The hanging-on thingy?" Chris repeated.
"You know, the riding stick. The grabby watchamacallit...zipper buckle handle."
I rolled my eyes. "Tyler, stop trying. You're making it sound like something below the belt." Tyler blushed at my pointing out the innuendos and Owen snickered.
Chris gave me a serious look. "Stephanie, this show is rated PG. You bring something like that to attention again, you'll be automatically eliminated."
I shrugged. "Okay, whatever. Sorry, Tyler, I didn't mean to embarrass you...much."
Alejandro spoke up. "We need no T-bar! We are Team Chris is Really Really Really Really Hot!" He used his belt as a T-bar. Owen tried using his hands, and Tyler took off his trackpants and tried using them. They both failed, but Izzy had a plan. She stuffed her pack over Noah and I and sped down, laughing.
We'd gotten a fair way when the sun began to set. "Dusk." Alejandro observed. "We can make camp here."
"Need rest..." groaned Owen. "And water. Oh, nachos would be killer right now."
Noah smirked. "Sure, all we're missing is chips, beef, tomatoes, cheese, salsa..."
"Hey, slow down, guys, I'm making a list!" Izzy said.
I frowned. "Speaking of lists...after my nap on the plane, I've just realized that my sketchbook disappeared. Did I leave it on the plane?"
Alejandro smiled. "I have it." He pulled it out of his pocket. "I meant to give it back to you earlier, but with the challenge...and I kept it because Chef's still on the plane and after I saw him with a game console, I don't put it past him to mess with our possessions."
I felt myself blushing as I took my sketchbook back. "Thanks." I just hoped that he hadn't seen the picture I'd drawn. As far as I could remember, I'd left it open on the plane.
We had no food, but at least we had fire.
Seconds later, a panicked voice came through our walkie-talkie. "Chris, Chris, Chris, it's Gwen! The Zingies with the tree tied up with my hands in Cody's pants, this trouble is big!" Gwen's voice was quick and mixed up, and I had to wonder what she meant.
"Walkie-talkies are for emergencies only." Chris' voice came through.
Gwen repeated her statement.
"Way to go, Cody!" Tyler yelled into our walkie-talkie.
"Thank you!" Cody's voice replied.
Gwen said something else unintelligible, then Courtney's voice came through. "Gwen epippened herself. We need help!"
Chris began "E. Mer. Gen-"
"We're being held at spearpoint by the Zing-Zings!" Heather's voice hissed. "Help! Us! Now!"
Next, Lindsay's voice came through. "We're in first place!" she squealed. "Hi, Tyler!" Tyler waved, and I facepalmed. He did know she couldn't see him, right?
"Okay, Team Amazon," Chris said. "Keep calm, and-" The singing chime played.
"You must be joking." Heather hissed.
"Do we have to sing back-up?" Owen asked.
"No, this one is all Amazon." Chris assured us through the device. "But let's make it end with a little solo...from Heather. And...begin!"
I didn't listen to the song. Something about Gwen using Cody's epipen and not having luck and being likely to be eliminated.
We slept around a fire that probably wouldn't have been built if not for Alejandro. What? We were all town teens, none of us knew a thing about fire. As for Alejandro...well, Chris had mentioned his father was a diplomat. They moved around a lot, right? It could've explained something about his skills.
We were woken up by a growl. "Is that coming from the fire?" Owen asked.
"Fires rarely growl." Noah said shakily.
"Al built it. Maybe Spanish fires growl."
"That's racist, Owen!" I hissed.
Anyway, it wasn't the fire – it was giant caterpillars. I was just glad to get any sleep after we finally got rid of them.
"Daybreak." It seemed as if I'd had no sleep at all when Alejandro woke us with that one word. "No time for head counts. We've got to get to Macchu Picchu and find that treasure. Hurry!" We all obeyed.
Thing was, maybe that was the reason we didn't realize we were missing Owen until we got there. Chris wouldn't let us start looking for the treasure without the whole team. Lindsay and DJ had already started searching for the treasure, while Alejandro went back to find him.
Long story short, Lindsay found the treasure. Team Amazon was back on the plane by the time we left, but they'd lost the challenge. Team Victory was in First Class, and Lindsay invited Tyler to join them.
It turned out to be a reward challenge, although Chris still made Team Amazon vote. Heather got the most votes, but she escaped elimination and got to stay. What a drag.
I flipped open my sketchbook to the picture I'd drawn, seeing if there was any indication of anyone having seen it. I glanced up to see Alejandro glancing at me. His eyes flickered to my sketchbook and I mouthed "Did you see what I'd drawn?"
He gave me an apologetic look, with a nod. "I couldn't help it. It was lying there, open."
I just hoped that he hadn't understood my reasoning behind the casting in the picture. Or, better, that it was not one of my better sketches and he hadn't recognized himself in the pirate.
Steph, Steph, Steph...you don't have that kind of luck, do you? Sorry.
