Chapter 2 : Pregnant Pauses
Harry felt as though he was going to be sick. The shock of seeing so many people alive when yesterday they were dead to him, was indescribable. His eyes constantly moved to look at the faces that he had not seen in years, drinking in their features. Sirius, Remus, Tonks, Fred, Mad- Eye and Dumbledore. He even missed the sneer that seemed permanently present on Severus Snape's face. It was like he was living in his own memory, seeing all of those faces looking at him. Only this time, it was for a much more complicated reason.
The Order members, which were not going to be included in this discussion, left after a brief chat with Dumbledore, though not after throwing sly looks at Harry and Ginny.
The Weasleys, Hermione, the professors and others all sat around the table in the kitchen. Harry and Ginny stood in front of it, their hands clasped together, as close to the door as they could possibly be. It was Harry who chose to stand there - after all, when in doubt, know your way out. It was an Auror thing, which he thought would be handy to remember considering the stares that were being sent his way from the Weasley brothers.
Bill, the oldest, was scrutinising the two, his eyes darting between the two. Fred and George, naturally, found the situation amusing. Surely they had easily inferred that Harry and Ginny were a couple now, obvious from the recent display of affection. But the person who Harry was worried about was Ron. His best mate. He hadn't spoken much, even not expressing himself with his usual 'Bloody hell' after witnessing the kiss between his sister and his best mate. He was just there; with his face blank. Harry had to suppress a snort.
Harry's other best friend, Hermione was looking at him in concern, no doubt forming her own conclusions in her brilliant mind.
"Well, now that we are all comfortable, why don't you enlighten us on what has been going on with the two of you?" Dumbledore politely questioned. Harry noted that he did not look him directly in the eye.
"Why would you think that there is something wrong?" Ginny whispered after she had licked her dry lips.
"Well, dearest sister," one of the twins said.
"This morning you screamed bloody murder-" The other carried on.
"Then passed out."
"And when young Harry here arrives-"
"You run at him -"
"And have a passionate moment-"
"Quite a public one, I must say-"
"Aww, bless them Gred. They've gone all red!"
"Boys!" Mrs. Weasley snapped. Her gaze had been alternating from looking suspicious, to looking annoyed at the twins, to looking concerned at Ginny and Harry.
"And Harry told us that we best sit down for what you were going to say." Arthur interjected quietly. Nobody else said anything - they just watched the two teenagers fidget under their gazes. Moody's magical eye was whizzing all over the place as if he thought there was something they had hidden that could get them into trouble.
Neither Harry nor Ginny said anything. They were too busy trying to think of what to say and how to say it.
"Harry."
The black-haired boy's head snapped up to look at the owner of the soft voice. His eyes met with the grey ones of his godfather, Sirius Black. Harry had not seen his godfather in years and his heart clenched as he looked into the face that showed nothing but concern.
"Harry," Sirius repeated. "Just tell us. We won't get mad. We can help you. What's going on? Have you done something? Has Ginny done something? Is it something to do with Voldemort?"
"No," Harry finally answered. "It... It has nothing to do with Voldemort." He glanced at Ginny and saw that she was looking at him, their expressions mirrored in confused thought. "At least.. We don't... don't think so..."
Moody sighed, "Well spit it out then boy! We don't have all day!" he barked at Harry. Harry opened his mouth to say something - anything - when he was interrupted by a high-pitched voice coming from next to him.
"I'm pregnant!"
Harry's head snapped sideways to look at his wife, now almost a fourteen-year-old girl, his mouth dropping open in horror. Ginny had both hands clamped to her mouth, her expression clearly showing that she hadn't meant to blurt that part out just like that.
There was silence for a few moments in the kitchen of number 12 Grimmauld Place - something that had not happened recently - before all hell broke loose.
"WHAT?" Molly Weasley's high pitched shriek drowned out the deep rumbles of her sons as they - plus Arthur - all jumped to their feet.
Sirius' mouth hung open; his eyes wide. He had not been expecting that at all. And judging from the way he was swinging his eyes between Harry, Ginny and their intertwined hands, he had no doubts over who he thought the father was. But when this had happened, he did not know.
Remus had his hand clamped on Sirius' arm as if to either hold himself upright or keep Sirius in his seat. He had come to the same conclusion as his friend and his head was spinning as he tried to think of what to say, or what to do. Tonks was sat next to him, her hair a stark white and one of her hands clamped over her mouth. She had spent a little time with the youngest Weasley over the summer and she could not believe that she had never picked up on the fact that she was with child.
Moody and Kingsley just tried to remain neutral. After all, they did not know the two young kids, but they all knew that having a baby in the middle of a war was never an ideal situation, but adding in the fact that she was just a teen, the whole situation was a disaster.
Snape's sneer became more pronounced as his thoughts ran through his head. 'I knew it was just a matter of time. I'm a little surprised it took so long actually. I would have thought boys would just have to sneeze at her in order to get her pregnant, considering the mother she has...'
McGonagall just sat with her hand clutched to her chest as she stared at her two young Gryffindors while Dumbledore sat quietly besides her, the only indication that he had heard anything was the way that his eyebrows narrowed a little in thought.
Molly was still shrieking, the hysteria she was feeling oozing out of her mouth.
"What have you done, you silly little girl! I thought we taught you better than that! Whose is it? WHOSE IS IT?"
At her last shriek, everyone went silent as they stared at the couple in front of them. Harry was just staring blankly at everyone while Ginny was quietly crying.
It was Ron that broke the silence.
"It was you wasn't it?" he asked, his voice a deathly whisper.
"YOU'RE THE ONE WHO GOT HER PREGNANT!" he roared. And then before Harry could open his mouth to defend himself, Ron lunged at him.
An invisible barrier rose between the two boys as Dumbledore rose to his feet, wand in hand.
"Enough!" his voice echoed around the crowded room. "Mr. Weasley, please take your seat. I have a few questions of my own." Ron made no indication to move until a stunned Hermione grabbed his arm and pulled him back to his seat. Everyone else had sat down as soon as Dumbledore spoke and Molly had buried her head in her husband's shoulder.
"Now, Ginevra. Are you absolutely positive that you are pregnant?" Dumbledore kindly asked her. Ginny choked back another sob and nodded her head. Mrs Weasley let out another loud wail.
"And just who is the father of your child?"
Ginny didn't seem to be able to answer, so it was Harry who spoke as he pulled her into his arms in a gesture that was equally for protection as it was for comfort.
"I am."
Sirius wearily rubbed his hand over his eyes as Mr Weasley and the boys all started to rise from their seats, murder in their eyes. However, they quickly sat down again as Dumbledore raised his hand in a peaceful gesture.
"I see," he nodded to the two, watching as Ginny pressed her face into Harry's chest, "and just when was this baby conceived?"
Harry looked up into the piercing blue eyes of his headmaster, pleased when he did not look away and instead maintained the eye contact. They stared at each other as Harry tried to determine exactly how much the old headmaster knew or had at least guessed.
He swallowed before answering.
"May 2004."
The silence pressed heavily on their eardrums. Everyone was now staring at them, their faces a mixture of disbelief and blank confusion. Molly, who had finally lifted her head from Arthur's shoulder, looked as though she was about to faint. Snape, who had been inwardly laughing at Potter's stupidity, now looked as if he had been clubbed around the head by a troll.
"B-but... That's not p-p-possible!" Tonks stuttered. It seemed as though the majority of the room agreed with that statement.
"Indeed, one would think so." Dumbledore continued, his head tilted to one side, the usual twinkle shining in his eyes. "However, I am inclined to believe that it is true. How did you get here, my boy?"
"We don't know, sir."
"So, you have no idea? Then how do we know you're not making it up? And if you have been brought back in time, then why are you... you?" Tonks asked.
"Then why are they what?" Sirius asked her, a bewildered look on his face.
"I think she means, if they came back in time, why do they still look nearly 14 and 15 years old?" Remus answered as he heaved a great sigh.
Everyone turned to look at Harry and Ginny, but they looked just as lost as everyone else.
"I would suggest that the two of you tell us everything you can remember about this whole thing. Maybe it would also help to ease Molly's mind if you also informed us of the nature of your relationship," Dumbledore prompted.
Harry nodded before leading Ginny to sit down in the two chairs that they had neglected before. Ginny's tears had stopped, but she still clung to Harry. It was almost as if she felt she would blurt out more things if she spoke again and the way she glance furtively at her family showed just how afraid she was still and had been of their reactions.
"Ginny and I first got together towards the end of my sixth year. We dated for about two months. Unfortunately, I had to break it off with her as I... had things to do outside of Hogwarts."
"What things? Surely they weren't so important that you would end things with my little sister!" Ron hissed at Harry. The twins, who stood on either side of their younger brother, nodded their heads in agreement, their usually happy faces clouded uncharacteristically with a cold seriousness.
This time, it was Ginny who answered after a quick glance at her husband. They couldn't say too much. If they did, the whole timeline would be changed. And that may not be a good thing.
"We cannot tell you," her voice became harsh as she cut off her brother who had opened his mouth to retort. "No, Ron! If we say too much, then everything could change. All you have to know is that those things Harry had to do, were the most important things in the world. It was literally a matter of life and death - and not just his own life, but the life and survival of the whole wizarding world! So yes Ronald, I would say that they were important enough for Harry to break up with me!"
Again, the atmosphere plummeted into a harsh depression as everyone registered what Ginny had just said.
"Did things really get that bad?" Hermione asked quietly.
"They got worse than that, but we cannot say. At least not yet," Harry answered her. He looked at everyone in the room, pleading for their understanding.
"Very well, my dear boy. Perhaps in time you will be able to divulge these things. Would you like to continue?" Dumbledore spoke.
Harry nodded, then took in a deep breath as he started to speak again. "After I was done with these things, nobody was in danger anymore. Voldemort was dead."
"Dead?" was the general outcry from the occupants of the room. Everyone leaned forwards in their chairs, including Snape, waiting for their unspoken questions to be answered. Dumbledore lost the kind expression to adopt an imploringly serious one. He looked into the green eyes of his pupil, searching for the truth.
"Yes. Dead. Again, we cannot say how yet." Although he was answering the whole room, Harry's gaze remained locked on Dumbledore. As he stared into his blue eyes, one thought crossed his brain. 'Prophecy'.
Dumbledore's eyes widened slightly and then he gave a small nod to the boy - or was it man? - in front of him. Harry carried on, his voice rising to be heard over the beginnings of questions.
"After Voldemort was dead, Ginny and I began to see each other again and after about 3 years of dating, in Christmas of 2000, I proposed to her. We got married the following year and have been happy since then. Until yesterday."
"Yesterday? What happened yesterday?" Hermione asked.
"Yesterday for us, in 2004," Ginny answered her, "We were at the Burrow, having dinner with our family when we announced that I was pregnant..."
"So, wait. For you two yesterday is actually 9 years into the future?" Sirius butted in, his finger pointing between the two of them.
"Yes. Yesterday was our third wedding anniversary," Ginny smiled, her hand drifting down to her stomach.
There was another short bout of silence.
"I am so confused!" Tonks groaned. Many people nodded and grunted their agreement.
Harry snorted, "You're telling us! Yesterday, I was having the time of my life, I went to bed as normal. Today, I wake up in my adolescent body, in my bedroom at number four Privet Drive - a place I said I would never step foot in again!" He threw his hands up in the air with a growl of frustration, before burying his head in them.
The females in the room couldn't help but be sympathetic towards the young man. Most of them believed the two youngsters. After all, it was a little too complicated to just be made up.
"Did something similar happen to you, Miss Weasley?" McGonagall asked her. If it were true, then this was a very unique and bewildering situation.
Ginny shrugged, "A little. I woke up this morning to be sick, and when I looked in the mirror, I looked like this." She gestured to her younger body with a frown. "That was when I started to scream."
Despite themselves, the Weasley twins couldn't quite hold in their soft chuckles.
"So, what you mean is that somehow your future memories and thoughts were transported back in time to your adolescent bodies, as well as the child you are impregnated with?" Kingsley picked up the questioning with his deep, slow voice He had quietly been listening and gathering up what he could in order to make sense of the situation.
Ginny and Harry looked at each other for a few moments. "It would seem so, yes."
The silence that yet again befell the kitchen was one of thoughtfulness this time as everyone digested the situation.
"What I would like to know," Snape finally drawled. Harry was actually surprised it took so long for him to open his mouth. "Is if Mr Potter and Miss Weasley have any proof that what they say is true. After all, I wouldn't put it past the insufferable brat to spin a tale like this just to get himself out of trouble."
"Severus," Dumbledore warned in a low voice.
"It is okay, sir," Harry answered as he turned to face the potions professor. He may not like the man, but he respected and admired him for the role he was playing. It couldn't be easy, and after all, he had saved Harry's life on numerous occasions. "We know about the doe."
The people in the room had the pleasure of seeing Severus Snape's jaw drop. A few people had to hide their sniggers, even as they wondered what Harry was going on about. Dumbledore didn't even bother to hide his smile or twinkle.
"H-how do you know about that?" Although his voice had begun as a small whisper, Snape's voice grew into a harsh growl towards the end.
Harry couldn't help but smile, "I saw it."
Snape was silent for a few more moments before the sneer was back on his face. "Well, I do not think that is adequate proof. You could have known about that before." The look on his face clearly showed that he had hoped that wasn't the case.
Harry and Ginny once more looked at each other. They knew what they could say to make everyone believe them, but could they tell them? They would have too, not only would it prove they were telling the truth, but it could also help avoid silly situations, many arguments and help end things quicker this time around. They had no idea whether they could return to their own time. No, the others could be kept on a need-to-know basis.
It was Mad-eye who spoke up, "Veritaserum would be useful".
Unsurprisingly, Snape agreed with him, "Yes…. But unfortunately, my store is currently depleted. However, rest assured, I would get right onto it."
Bill voiced his opinion, "What about Legilimency?"
Everyone turned as one to their leader, the headmaster.
"Using Veritaserum, or -"
"Sorry Professor for interrupting. We have absolutely no qualms with both the proposed methods; however, we all need to tread carefully. Knowing the future beforehand could have drastic consequences," Harry said.
"What do you suggest then, Harry?" Dumbledore asked calmly.
Before Harry could answer, Ginny whispered in his ear, "How about we skirt around? Tell them some personal things, like Snape's Patronus? Or even better, the Order missions?"
Harry found this perfectly agreeable. "Alright. We know what the Order is guarding in the Department of Mysteries."
The effect of this statement on the Order of the Phoenix was huge. When they heard that they knew of the prophecy, several mouths dropped open. The Weasley boys and Hermione just looked curious while Molly and Arthur shared a panicked look with some other members. Moody had both eyes fixed on the young couple and narrowed suspiciously. Sirius and Remus shared a quick look with each other and Snape's sneer became more pronounced.
"The sheer audacity you have for meddling in issues is simply astounding. I warned you Dumbledore. The boy is just as arrogant as his father -"
"Yes, yes," Ginny waved Snape off before he could continue his usual tirade, "we all know what you are going to say."
"Professor," Harry said wearily, "If you do not have something constructive to say, please hold your tongue. It may save you some trouble."
Snape swelled in anger, "Why you insolent little -"
"Severus," Dumbledore warned again.
"I will thank you Snivellus for not calling my godson names. That too in my house," Sirius interjected.
"Of course. I should have known the mutt's influence start to exhibit in Potter," sneered Snape. "Although it is no surprise considering his father, he too used to stuck up his nose -" Harry had had enough.
"Speaking of eavesdropping, I distinctly remember a young boy living in Spinner's End hanging around a girl, who he found out to be a Muggleborn witch. The boy introduced the girl about magic and the Wizarding World. They both became friends but went into different houses at Hogwarts. The girl tried to remain friends with the boy but then, in a bout of jealousy and hatred he called her a 'Mudblood' and thus ended their friendship," Harry couldn't stop once he had begun. It was so good for once to snap back at Snape.
"You know, I don't condone in any way what my father put you through at Hogwarts. James Potter may have been a bully, but at least he had the guts to grow up. Whereas you," scoffed Harry, "Even after his death, after all these years you are still stuck in that petty schoolyard rivalry. So, when Harry Potter started Hogwarts, it became very easy to view him only as James Potter's son; because the only other alternative was a constant reminder of what you lost and what you couldn't save," his voice rising with each word, "And you couldn't tolerate that, could you? The son of Lily Evans with her eyes -"
"ENOUGH !" bellowed Snape.
"So you see, people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. You, Professor Snape are just like my Aunt Petunia. You know her, don't you? She was jealous of my mother, the fact that she was magical. You are excellent at bearing grudges just as she is."
Heavy silence followed. Snape's eyes were wide and he sat stunned. As did the rest of the listeners. Sirius and Remus, the two Marauders, had easily interpreted who the girl and the boy were. So did Dumbledore.
Snape finally found his voice and turned his glare to the headmaster, "What have you been telling him?"
"Nothing," answered Dumbledore, "and judging by Sirius and Remus' expressions, I expect they didn't tell either."
"The only way I would have known that is because I found out in the future. Not exactly a trivial thing, you see, realizing after seven years that the man who was a right foul git with a dark past, was in fact trying to save me all along," said Harry.
"Harry – ", Dumbledore began. However Harry continued.
"Sirius, you had a brother Regulus Arcturus Black who became a Death Eater. He died but you don't know when and how. Andromeda Black is your cousin. She was blasted off the family tree when she married Ted Tonks, a Muggleborn who is your father," he directed his gaze towards Tonks.
Ginny who was silent upto this point, decided to add two knuts of her own.
"Tonks, you started changing your hair colour on the day of your birth. Your favourite charm is the Jelly-Legs Jinx, presumably because you are clumsy yourself." The said woman protested half-heartedly. "Kingsley's patronus is a lynx. Remus, Fenrir Greyback bit you as a child in revenge because your father spoke out against him."
"And...," Ginny found herself stumped at Mad-Eye. "Well, we don't know much about you." Mad-Eye looked pleased at this, his eye whizzing in his socket.
Harry was now spouting out details as he remembered, "Professor Dumbledore, I know about your siblings Ariana and Aberfoth. I also know who you befriended during your youth. Bathilda Bagshot introduced the two of you. 'For the Greater Good' was your motto. And it was your desire to reunite the Deathly Hallows, one of which you have in your possession. I have one too, as I am the heir of Ignotus Peverell."
The Weasleys, Hermione and the Order members couldn't help but remain confused. It was not the time to explain. The comment had hit it's target.
"Also, you were the one to bring Tom Riddle his Hogwarts letter. I know you have been researching about his past. I also know for a fact, that currently Hagrid is on an Order mission with Madame Maxime to try to rally support from the giants," completed Harry.
"Oh and your favourite jam is raspberry," he added after a while.
"How does Harry know all that? How do I know that? Because we have been through this before. Most importantly, I am now two months pregnant," she ignored the reactions of her family. "Harry and I didn't even really have a friendship at this point in time. When would we even gotten together in the last few months? Harry, Ron and Hermione have been attached to the hip, what with the whole Triwizard Tournament. Surely Harry isn't a one who would take advantage. And do I seem foolish to take such a step at this age? I know better."
"So, the only thing that makes sense is we are telling the truth. We have somehow overnight travelled back in time," she finished.
No one spoke.
"It seems they are telling the truth", Dumbledore said plainly. He cast a glance around him and saw others who were included in Harry and Ginny's outburst, nodding in agreement.
"So…," Ginny began, feeling relieved that their strange predicament was believed, "How do we proceed further?"
"You didn't use a time turner, did you?" Hermione asked timidly.
The couple shook their heads.
"Even if they did, they wouldn't appear as the ages they are now," Lupin said.
"Are you both certain, that you didn't use any form of magic or device that could perhaps have anything to do with this situation?" Dumbledore followed.
"No sir," replied Harry.
Ginny knew she had to put forth the burning question, "Can we return to our time?"
Harry squeezed her hand in comfort. Quick glances and looks were thrown at each other by the occupants before fixing their eyes at the young couple.
"Once we find out the cause of your time travel, it might be possible," answered Dumbledore.
"Accepting you travelled back in time, what can you safely say?" Sirius asked.
Harry hesitated a bit before answering, "Like we explained earlier, Voldemort was defeated in May 1998, completely died I might add, and since then the wizarding world has been rebuilt and progressed. All Death Eaters and Voldemort's cronies were either killed or locked up in Azkaban for life. Everyone went on with their lives. Ginny and I, we both started our careers, got married, until yesterday when….."
Harry suddenly broke off. Ginny glanced at him sideways and saw her teenage husband looking pale and stiff.
"Harry?"
Harry was staring into the distance, his face all of a sudden becoming deathly white. His breathing was becoming highly irregular and Ginny could feel his body trembling slightly beside hers.
"Harry! What is it?" she asked again.
She was about to shook him, when Hermione let out a scream. She was pointing at Harry… no, at Harry's chest.
It was then Ginny glanced down at his chest and gasped. His shirt was getting red. Red with blood. She had only looked into Harry's face, when his eyes rolled back and he crumpled into his seat, unconscious.
