Later That Week
"That's it for class today. Don't forget the essay is due tomorrow, 300 words." Arizona's voice sounded as the bell rang.
"Can't we get till Monday?" they had spent the last fifteen minutes of class trying to negotiate.
They were warming up to her.
"How about I change it to Friday? But that means you'll have to bring it to the staff room since i don't have you that day."
They knew that was probably as late as they would get so took it.
"What class do you have next?" she liked watching her students' interactions with one another in other classes. Knowing the way her students thought and responded helped in her own classes with what worked best for them.
"PE with Ms.Torres" a short answer from Lin, as she rushed out to get to the changing room before it got too full.
"I just might look in." Arizona didn't have any other classes until after lunch, and here was her opening to get to know some more about her students outside of her class.
Plus Callie would be there.
Fifteen minutes later Arizona walked into an animated school gym.
She took a seat on one of the benches happy she had choosen to wear a pant-suit today.
She hadn't seen Callie walking up to her , "Hello there." Callie said witha small smile.
"I don't think I've ever seen a PE class where everyone looked glad to be there." Arizona said looking around impressed.
"I try to make it fun for them." she said taking a seat next to Arizona and continuing, "They have the other classes stressing them out enough, so this is the class where they get to forget everything for a while."
"I'm sure they appreciate that."
"I hope so." she said, "So what brings you to my class this morning?" Callie was glad Arizona came by.
"I had some free so i thought I'd come and watch them for a while, get to know them a little better." What she wanted to add was, "I also am intrigued by you and want to know everything about you." but she didn't have the courage to say it.
"I can tell you that they are a great bunch." Callie said looking ahead at them.
"I caught on to that." Arizona conceded.
"See over there? By the hoops."
Arizona looked in the direction she was pointing.
"She's a natural. I help with her shooting at lunch twice a week. Her parents refuse to let her got anywhere near the school's basketball team, they don't want her in any "boy's sports", the thing is that she could go all the way. She's in here every chance she has to practice."
"Wow, so they wouldn't budge at all?" Arizona liked that Callie cared so much.
"I'm trying to work out something, but so far, no." Callie sighed, "I let her practice with the team a little after school and take her home before her parents get home from work. She's top of the class every year and they still put pressure on her to do more. She uses basketball as an escape and I help where I can."
"I'm sure it helps to have a teacher who is willing to listen and be there."
Callie shrugged, "Any good teacher would do that. I'm sure you would." Callie said looking into Arizona's eyes.
"Wow are her eyes beautiful!"Arizona thought. They're these dark brown orbs that lead into a beautiful garden that is Callie's soul.
She snapped out of her thoughts when she remembered she was having a conversation with her and anwered, "I would. Teaching is about encouraging dreams and leading kids on a path to achieve them. Sometimes all it takes is one teacher caring, to help them discover passions and talent they didn't know they had." Someone who was invested in what they did as much as she was, she could talk to Callie all day, "Taking time out to learn about them and give an extra push they don't get from the parents goes a long way."
Here Callie was, talking to someone who shared her passion for students' development, someone who had just as big a heart as she did, someone who Callie wouldn't mind spending more time around.
With that, the bell rang for the start of lunch.
"Ok everyone, enjoy lunch." Callie said then turned to Arizona. "You're heading back up to the staff room right?"
"Yes, you too?" Arizona asked.
"I am but I have to pack up the equipment, would you mind helping?"
"Sure."
"You can put the balls into that big box next to you." Callie started on rearranging the scattered chairs.
"Oh, i was supposed to ask, how are you feeling?"
Callie gave her a confused looked.
"I saw you in the break room the other day, the Biology teacher was there with you, Addison i think she told me her name was."
"Oh yeah. I wasn't having the best day, forgot my lunch." She didn't really want to elaborate on it.
"Ah yes, sounds like the start to every bad day."
Callie chuckled, "So you ready to go?"
"Yup"
With that they headed out.
*Author's Note*
Callie and Arizona talk more in this chapter and they are getting to learn about one another. I'm thinking to add another chapter with this one.
