Chapter 28: The Prison Inmates
It began like any ordinary day. Wake up, looking at a hard bed, gray walls, wash up, use the toilet and get ready for your day. Then go eat food and go work in the prison. Eat, sleep, rinse, repeat.
You don't use the Internet, you watch tv under limited circumstances, you can use phones briefly, and mail and books have to be supervised as well as any visits with anyone.
It's a lonely life, but you make the most of it. After all, you're here because you committed a robbery, a murder, something less than innocuous. Maybe you're here because you're innocent, which is less than likely, but if you are, sorry about that.
You see this existence until the day it all ends for you.
Maybe it goes fast. Maybe it goes slowly. Either way, it's an agonizing way to go out, watching your cell mate become a zombie and feast on you. Seeing your guts is not good for the soul.
Over half of you are dead. One half hides in a special place but eventually die and turn to monsters.
A young guard protects several men, but then he goes to check on something and never comes back.
"Where do you think Kevin went?" Tomas asked.
"Dunno. He ain't here." Oscar said.
"That doesn't make sense." The other guy said, and the other two in the group agreed.
They knew something weird was happening. They hadn't heard from the other guys in a long time. They'd been surviving off the baked beans and using the toilets and stuff.
They talked when things were quiet and slept in shifts. Things turned violent sometimes but they were able to calm things down.
Axel was the guy who calmed down Tomas.
Then that group entered.
"My old lady?"
A flurry of questions left their mouths. They had no idea what had become of the world they were familiar with.
Oh god, it's changed to match their own world.
And then one does the unthinkable and kills one of them. So he gets axed.
Oscar and Axel choose to go with the group. The last one refuses.
He sets the monsters on them.
He gets eaten alive as a punishment.
"My older brother…"
Axel opens his mouth to speak.
A gunshot can be heard.
Axel's world goes white as he's shot in the head and he dies instantly.
Meanwhile, Oscar the gentle man gets shot in Woodbury.
They may have been on the show briefly, but we never forgot them.
