Author's Note: This is the rewritten version of "Siblings of Light". I am having this as a separate, revised story because it won't fit with what I originally wrote in the first, rough draft of the piece. I made some mistakes, but I think this makes it up for it (I hope I did better now). Just a little piece of information; this is my FIRST How to Train Your Dragon story, so if I make some small canon mistakes, point them out to me, 'kay? I'll try to stay within the canon as much as possible after the first arc of Bright growing up under the Light Furies.

Chapter 1: The Human Hatchling

Flashwing was flying through the dead of night as Dragons were attacking the human village, and he was careful not to be amongst those who were shot down by the humans with their weapons. This is not going well, he thought to himself as he unexpectedly arrived in a human's nest.

The sound of a hatchling crying came to his draconic ears as they lifted at the sound. Flashwing looked over to a cradle (as humans called it) and noticed the small thing, he never knew he would. There, lying in the cradle, was a smaller human with a small patch of brown hair and blue eyes, which stared curiously at him once it stopped crying.

A hatchling! A human's hatchling, no less, Flashwing couldn't help but smile at the small creature, who tilted its small head as he moved in closer. Why is it here? Is it alone?

To answer his question, the door to the nest opened as a female human stepped in with a sharp weapon in her hand. She looked horrified as the Light Fury looked at her with his green eyes, his white scales lighting up the room by the torches.

"Don't go near him!" she said, in a begging tone. "I don't want you near him, monster!"

"Monster" was rude, calling him that. Was she trying to offend me? wondered Flashwing, staring intensely at the woman who had the same brown hair and blue eyes as the hatchling. He tried to speak to her, but his warbles were the only thing she heard.

"Don't make me do this…" She threatened to step toward him, but hesitation overtook her as she heard her child's laughter as he attempted to play with the Light Fury's tail.

Flashwing noticed this, as well, moving closer to the hatchling. Why is it not afraid of me, a Dragon? Could it be… He never heard or cared about the idea of a human understanding Dragons.

His thoughts were cut off, as the woman tried to attack him, but he accidentally scratched it by one claw. "You fool! You made me hurt him!" he shouted at her in Dragonese, but all she heard was growling and roars, but not for the hatchling, because he immediately stopped crying. Flashwing took notice. He did understand me! he realized.

"Helia!" said a tall, muscular man who barged in the nest with an ax in hand. He looked terrified at the Light Fury who was standing too close to his son. But his brownish eyes locked on the Dragon and he gave a battle cry before charging at Flashwing, who backed away before turning, shielding the hatchling with a wing as the man, the hatchling's father, struck him with his ax. Flashwing grunted painfully before a blast destroyed the rooftop, and Flashwing knew one thing to do.

He grabbed the hatchling in his paw and took off, shocking the two humans.

"No!" they cried out in fear as Flashwing flew off, leaving them behind.

All Flashwing heard was the loud, hurt cry from the man by the woman, Helia's, side.

...

"Magnus, how could you let it fly away with our son?!" Helia demanded her husband, who was horrified at what the Light Fury had done.

"I…I am sorry, Helia," Magnus said apologetically, holding her close as she cried in his chest. "I promise I will look after the tribe with what happened."

"It's not the tribe I am worried about," she whispered, a small whimper escaping her. "It's our son. He's captured by the dragons, and who knows what they will do to him, a human who barely has been born in no more than a day. Just why did this happen?!" She sobbed.

Magnus held her close, comforting her with his sweet, soft words. "Shh, Helia. Everything will be fine. I shall immediately look after our child. I will assemble a few boats to search for him."

Helia nodded, her eyes red due to tears.

Magnus soon carried her to bed and went out to the village. Everything was almost destroyed by the raid of the dragons. A couple of houses were in ruins, and the provisions stall was destroyed in the raid. This can only mean one thing: rebuilding the town, he declared inwardly. He was the chief of the village on this island of the Arctic Scar tribe. And he shall do anything to keep them safe from further harm.

Magnus walked over to a man. "Anything about where the dragons have flown to?"

"Nothing, as of late," the man sighed. He was named Haggard. "You have my condolences for losing your child and the tribe's future chief, Magnus."

"Thank you," Magnus said. "I will do my best to look after the village once I return from my tour to where the dragons have flown."

"And in the meantime, I'll be guarding the village once you return, Chief Magnus," Haggard nodded.

"Thank you, my friend," Magnus smiled. "I am lucky to have a good friend like you."

"Likewise," Haggard laughed heartily. "So, when do you set sail for the Nest?"

"Tomorrow," Magnus replied. "If there are no signs of my son, I don't know what I will do. Helia is heartbroken, and so am I." He looked down to the ground, a small tear falling from his eye.

"You will be fine, Magnus," Haggard assured him by placing a hand on the chief's shoulder. "Be strong. That's what your son would like for his father to be."

"You're right." Magnus straightened himself. He walked away from Haggard.

Flashwing carefully carried the hatchling in his mouth, so as to not hurt him with his teeth as he flew across the ocean with the other Dragons, who had taken livestock from the village. It was still strange to him. Him, a Light Fury, carrying a human hatchling to the Dragon Nest and having stolen it from its parents. It had to be done, he thought to himself. I could not let it be there if it could understand me.

Flashwing passed some rocky obstacles as the fog grew heavier. Soon, an island came into view, and it was filled with white, bluish rocks and had the shape of a nest. Flashwing carefully landed and stepped inside, making his way to the Alpha of the Dragon Nest, Scales.

Scales was a male Light Fury with forest green eyes and white, sparkling scales. His tail had two tailfin, and his wings were folded as Flashwing approached him. "What is it, Flashwing? Have you managed to get something from the human village without leaving it behind?" He meant the livestock from the village the Dragons had been to, and Flashwing nodded. "Well, show me." It wasn't a demand, it was a soft voice that spoke to Flashwing.

Flashwing opened his mouth, letting the hatchling come out on the grassy ground as Scales squinted his eyes to have a good look at it.

"Why have you brought it here?" Scales wanted to know.

"I took it from the nest I was in, because it could understand me," Flashwing replied.

Scales scowled. "No human would understand us. That's sounding absurd, Flashwing."

"I am telling the truth," Flashwing pressed. "I took this hatchling for a reason. When I shouted at the female human, he immediately stopped and looked at me. No other human would be able to do that to someone, let alone a Dragon."

Scales inhaled a breath, sighing. "And yet you took it because…?"

"It was the right thing to do," Flashwing said, holding the hatchling close to his warm scales.

Scales looked deeply thoughtful at him. "All right. Let me allow you to raise this human, but should it prove itself worthy of being amongst us, I shall not judge it for its appearance. Every Dragon who comes here, to the Nest, is someone whose life is worth more than a mindless creature."

"I can take you my word for it; this hatchling is not a mindless creature," Flashwing smiled, still holding the hatchling. "For even if he understood me, I shall raise him with care."

Scales hummed in agreement. "Very well. I entrust this hatchling into your paws."

Flashwing bowed his head respectfully to the Alpha. He did the same thing as he had done, by carrying the hatchling in his mouth as he flew across the Nest to his mate, Lightwing.

Lightwing was a female Light Fury with amethyst eyes and white scales that shone like sunlight. She raised her head while her daughter was asleep. She noticed Flashwing land nearby. "How was your day?" she asked in a soft voice.

"Good," he replied, approaching her, while carefully talking to not crush the hatchling in his mouth.

Lightwing noticed this. "What have you managed to find?"

"A hatchling," he replied, opening his mouth and letting the human hatchling on the soft ground.

Lightwing cooed at the hatchling, but soon saw Flashwing. "Let me guess…you stole it, didn't you?"

"I thought you would say that," Flashwing joked lightly. "No, I sensed that this hatchling could understand us better than the other humans. That's why I took him."

Lightwing leaned in to him and nuzzled his face. "Well, whatever it might be, I'm just glad you came home safely. Luna missed her father, you know."

Flashwing looked at her, guilty in his eyes. "Sorry for being away for a whole day." His apology was accepted by Lightwing leaning down to the human hatchling and nuzzling him gently with her cheek. Soon they went back to their daughter and fell asleep.

Unexpectedly to the two Light Furies, a silent cry came in the middle of the night, as their eyes opened and glanced at each other before realizing it together: it came from the human hatchling.

A small growl from the stomach of the hatchling sounded with its cries, as Lightwing tried to put it at ease by nuzzling, but it proved useless, as the crying continued.

"He's hungry," Flashwing realized.

"Why would you take a newborn hatchling who barely had anything to eat?" Lightwing asked, her voice hardened at the revelation.

They heard paws coming to them. Flashwing became nervous as he saw Scales, who looked directly into their eyes with his piercing green ones.

"This hatchling is disturbing the other Dragons," Scales said. "Please keep it quiet."

"We cannot; he's hungry and we don't know a thing about feeding humans," Flashwing realized.

Scales sighed. "Take a goat, and then let the mother goat nurse him until he's got teeth to bite into fish."

Flashwing grumbled in his stupidity. Why didn't I think of that? Well, the hatchling is my responsibility now. He nodded to Scales, who merely turned and walked away.

Lightwing looked at him for a moment. "Where are you going?"

"Outside for a moment," Flashwing answered. "A mother goat would be able to quell his crying, since he needs food like young sheep and goats do."

Lightwing nodded before returning back to silent the human hatchling for his cries.

Flashwing walked away from his nest and outside the Dragon Nest's entrance before taking flight. Once he did, he flew across the ocean to a small island where goats would be at. He found a mother still attending to her young and silently took the goat with him back to the Dragon Nest.

As he returned, a few Dragons looked at him, mostly at the goat in his grip. "This goat is for the human hatchling," he told them, hoping they would understand.

They stayed at their nests, unmoving as Flashwing came over to his nest where Lightwing stopped briefly to allow him to settle the goat to the ground, and the human hatchling was brought over to the goat before he was quick in silencing his cries while the mother goat was flinching lightly before allowing the human to take her milk.

"Glad that problem was solved," Flashwing sighed in relief.

Lightwing agreed with him. She heard a grunt from her daughter, who had been awake due to the human hatchling's cries.

"Mommy, what was that noise…" Luna started, before seeing the human hatchling for the first time. She was confused. "Why is it here?"

"Luna, meet…" Flashwing started, realizing the human hatchling's name was not given the day prior. "...Bright-Light. Your new brother."

Luna tilted her head at the human, Bright, her brother. Then she smiled happily as the human hatchling was done having his milk from the goat. Lightwing gently took the human in her paw and went over to the nest with a slight hop.

Soon the family fell asleep again.

Days passed by, until weeks came passing for the family of Light Furies. Their unexpected new family member, Bright, was someone who had been hard to feed at first, but soon it grew a lot easier for them to feed him each day while Flashwing went out of the Nest to grab a goat or sheep to have their milk for Bright. Luna was overjoyed to have a brother; she thought she was going to be raised as a lone hatchling by her parents, but eventually luck came her way with a brother (even if said brother was human).

Flashwing was lucky to receive help from both Scales and Lightwing in his care for Bright, who had grown a little bigger during the first three months. His teeth were beginning to show, and he had a struggle to eat raw fish, but he managed to adapt to eating fish once his teeth had grown.

As two years with the human had passed, the family of Light Fury and human began to grow into a new light every day. Flashwing realized Bright needed some warm clothing to keep himself from freezing, and there had been some Dragons who assisted him in taking clothes from villages.

Now Bright, four years old, was beginning to grow into a rebellious, but spirited kid. He would sometimes sneak away from his parents while they were not looking for him, which Luna joined in with him on his small adventures. However, they would get caught by either Flashwing or Lightwing, and be brought back to the nest.

Flashwing was looking for Bright as he searched around the Dragon Nest. "Bright, come out! I know you are still here!"

Aquawing, a Deadly Nadder, looked at him from her nest. "Looking for that kid of yours, Flashwing?"

"You know how troublesome he can be sometimes, Aquawing," Flashwing sighed. "Remember the time he almost fell into your water nest?"

Aquawing chuckled. "Oh, I remember it clearly." When she and her mate was not looking, somehow Bright managed to come into their nest and almost fall into the water, but luckily they found out about his intention and quickly saved him from drowning.

"Sometimes, that kid is a lot of trouble," Flashwing grunted.

"As long as he doesn't attempt that trick again, it's all fine, Flashwing," Aquawing said with a smile.

Flashwing agreed, and soon walked away from her. He had looked around everywhere in the Nest for the hatchling. Where could he be? Certainly not at the Gronckle family nest, nor the Monstrous Nightmare nest. He began to think of the possible nests Bright would be, until his eyes widened. Oh no! The Alpha will not take this lightly! He quickly ran over to the Alpha nest, where he saw Scales playing with Bright, and he soon became relieved.

"Dad!" called Bright excitedly, waving his hand to Flashwing.

"Go to your father now, Bright," Scales said, nudging the human with his nose forward. "He would be worried if you don't."

Bright nodded and ran over to Flashwing, who hugged him with his wings. "Hey, Dad!" His Dragonese speech was getting better by the day that passed, and he was getting the hang of the teachings the other Dragons had for him, since he needed to learn everything about the culture of the Dragons, who were starting to view differently since he first came to the Nest.

"Son, you should know better than running off like that," Flashwing scolded softly. "Your mother was beginning to worry you were taken."

Bright looked down in shame. "Sorry, Dad. I promise to be more careful."

"Good." Flashwing couldn't stay mad at him for more than a minute, and he smiled at Bright. "Come. Let's go back to the nest." He turned and walked away.

"Bye, Alpha Scales!" Bright waved to the Light Fury, who smiled and waved with a paw in response.

Once they were back to the nest, Lightwing gave Bright the motherly scolding eyes. "Bright, for once, could you please not run off from us? You should know not many of the Dragons in the nest would take kindly of you sneaking into their nests."

"Sorry, Mom," Bright apologized. "I promise."

Lightwing's eyes softened and she leaned in and nuzzled Bright's face with her cheek. If he was someone who would not take it personally, Bright would have reacted differently by the gesture she gave him. However, Lightwing was his mother, and he allowed her.

Luna came hopping over to him. "Bright, let's fly together!" Her enthusiasm about flying with her brother had encouraged them to become a pair of Dragon and Rider. Most Dragons in the Dragon Nest found it absurd to allow a human to ride them, but not the Light Furies.

Bright smiled, looking pleadingly to his mother for permission. After a moment, she nodded her permission. Immediately came Bright over to his sister and got onto her back. She spread her wings and took flight toward the entrance.

"Don't be too far away from the Nest!" shouted Flashwing to them.

He could only see Bright waving his hand in answer.
