Author's Note: Here we are at the halfway mark of the movie arc. I am pretty pleased with myself to have written half of HTTYD into my story. Also, yes, it was my idea to begin the chapter with a nightmare.
Tq3942: Maybe. :P You just need to keep reading the story. I won't spoil anything.
Chapter 10: Teamwork - I
Bright was standing in front of a crowd of Vikings. His eyes were draconic while the Vikings were tough, scary-looking, and held weapons in their hands. One of them soon approached his sister, Luna, who was chained to a pillar in the plaza of Berk. "No, please!"
"Silence!" roared the Viking. "You do not speak to us like that, and you call yourself one of us? Ha!" He raised his ax, holding its hilt with both hands and was prepared to cut Luna's head off, as the Light Fury widened her eyes in fear.
"Luna!" Bright shouted…
…
"Bright, wake up!" Hiccup's voice came to the struggling boy, who trashed on the floor. "You're having a nightmare. Please, wake up!"
Bright's eyes opened, draconic, but soon they relaxed when he saw he was in the Haddock residence and had Hiccup by his side, who smiled in relief. "Wha…" Bright tried to speak, but no words were able to escape him.
"You had a nightmare," Hiccup's soft voice began reassuring his friend. "Relax. Try and think clearly about what you had."
Bright's breathing slowly calmed down. "I…I saw Luna, chained to a pillar…and Vikings, bent on killing both her and me. I'm…scared, Hiccup. What if they find out where she is?"
Hiccup realized his fear. "Hey, don't worry. I'm sure it was all nothing. Remember you are with me, and Toothless might as well have comforted your sister if she, too, had the same nightmare. Am I right?"
"Ye…yeah," Bright nodded. "We tend to experience the same dreams and nightmares often."
Hiccup smiled in reassurance to Bright. "Try and get back to sleep, all right? I'll be right here if you need me." He walked over to his bed and sat down on the edge.
"Hiccup…thanks," Bright thanked him. "For waking me there."
"No problem, that's what friends do."
Friends… Bright thought as Hiccup laid down on his back on the bed again, falling to sleep. Bright looked up the window and saw it was still nighttime. He sighed and went back to sleep.
…
Morning arrived, and Hiccup yawned before noticing Bright nowhere to be found. "Bright?" he called, letting the blanket off his body, and he stood on his feet. His eyes scanned the room, but as he stepped forth, he was soon tackled by a human body and pinned to the floor. "Whoa!" he gasped.
"Ha! Gotcha!" Bright's voice came to Hiccup, who blinked in realization.
"Bright? What were you doing? Trying to scare me to death? Remember you had the nightmare and you should be more careful."
"I am careful," Bright chuckled. "I only tried my new attacking technique."
"By tackling me from behind?"
"Yep!"
Hiccup shook his head fondly and bemused. "You're acting too much like a dragon sometimes, Bright."
"Well, if you were raised by them, what would you do if you stumbled upon a human village for the first time?" Bright countered.
"Honestly? Try my best to act like a human."
Bright snorted in response, humored. "You are acting too human-y to me, Hiccup. If you want to survive, your best option is to strike enemies like a stalking dragon from behind them."
"Har-har!" Hiccup rolled his eyes playfully at him. "Let's just get to the arena where the others are waiting."
"Sure," Bright nodded.
…
"Today is about teamwork," Gobber called. "Work together and you might survive."
A double-wide door began to have gas filling through the cracks. It blasted open, with a cloud of smoke engulfing the ring, swirling around the paired-up teens, who were all carrying buckets of water, poised to throw them.
"Now," Gobber continued, "a wet dragon head can't light its fire. The Hideous Zippleback is extra tricky. One head breathes gas, the other head lights it. Your job is to know which is which."
Fishlegs began muttering to himself, "Razor sharp, serrated teeth. that inject venom for pre-digestion. Prefers an ambush attack, crushing its victims in it…"
"Will you please stop that?" Hiccup whispered, tensed.
"We do not need statistics, thank you very much," Bright added, just as tense as Hiccup.
Snotlout and Tuffnut were moving nervously through the fog, back to back. Snotlout was singing to himself to calm his nerves. "If that dragon shows either of his faces, I'm gonna—" He spotted an approaching shape. Terrifying, he added, "—there!"
Snotlout and Tuffnut hurled the water into the fog.
"Hey!" Astrid groaned.
"It's us, idiots," Ruffnut added in annoyance.
"Your butts are getting bigger," Tuffnut said. "We thought you were a dragon."
Snotlout cooed to Astrid. "Not that there's anything wrong with a dragon-esque figure." However, he got elbowed by her in the face, while Ruffnut dropped Tuffnut with a punch to the throat.
"Wait," Astrid muttered, and they froze. A tail swept out of the fog, taking them down. Their bucket spilled the water out on the floor.
"Oh, I'm hurt." Tuffnut said. "I am very much hurt."
"Changes of survival are dwindling into single digits now…" Fishlegs muttered to Bright and Hiccup.
"Look out!" Bright shouted, as a Zippleback head emerged out of the fog, and Fishlegs hurled his water at it, completely dousing the head. It leered and opened its mouth, spewing gas into the area. "That was not the head which lights!"
"Oh," Fishlegs realized. "Wrong head."
Gas flowed around their legs, and Fishlegs fled in a panic.
"Fishlegs!" Gobber called worryingly.
A clicking sound came from behind them. Sparks light in the smoke.
"Now, Hiccup and Bright!" Gobber shouted.
The other head swept out of the smoke, Hiccup and Bright hurled their waters with all their might. It arced and dropped short out of the dragon's sparking mouth. The dragon grinned, savoring the kill.
"Oh, come on…" Hiccup groaned.
"This shouldn't have gone like this…" Bright added with slight annoyance.
"Run, you two!" Gobber shouted, covering his eyes. "Hiccup! Bright!"
The Zippleback hesitated, sniffing, and then it retreated. The teens got to their feet, watching the display transfixed. Gobber peeked through his fingers to see…
"Back!" Hiccup demanded the Zippleback.
"Back!" Bright added, while the Zippleback retreated from them.
"Back!" Hiccup said. "Don't make me tell you again!" The Zippleback retreated through the door, and into its cave, hissing. "Yes, that's right! Back into your cage!" Hiccup slyly opened his vest, revealing the spotted eel from earlier. He tossed it inside the door, and then slammed it shut. "Now think about what you've done."
They turned to the teens and Gobber, who stared at them, slack-jawed.
"Okay!" Bright said, cutting the ice of the silence. "So are we done? Because we've got some things we need to…" They jogged out of the ring, past the speechless group.
"Yep…see you tomorrow," Hiccup waved farewell.
…
Hiccup cut and stitched leather, while Bright drew and shaped steel. They worked by candlelight, and they were working on a harness, complete with handles and foot pedals.
…
They appeared before Toothless and Luna, with Hiccup holding the new prosthetic while Bright held a saddle for Luna. Toothless and Luna ran off, with the humans chasing them down. "Hey!" they shouted.
Toothless, Hiccup, Bright and Luna were zooming over the ocean. Toothless's tail breaks free, sending Hiccup flying. "Yeah! Whoa!"
…
Hiccup adjusted the harness and used a metal clamp to affix himself to Toothless's saddle.
…
The group zip through the air—Hiccup's rudimentary harness and tail controls are working, barely—and they crash-landed in an open field, while Bright and Luna landed down beside them. Hiccup recovered to find Toothless still rolling around in the tall grass, with Luna joining in the fun. They discovered that it was a patch of 'dragon-nip'. Toothless and Luna writhes on their backs, tongues wagging, in complete bliss.
…
Hiccup grabbed the head as instructed, then discreetly pulled a fistful of 'dragon-nip' and pressed it up to the Gronckle's nose. It immediately stopped struggling and went weak in the knees. Hiccup dropped the handful of dragon-nip to the ground. The Gronckle goes down with it, whimpering and blissful.
