Chapter 17: Family Reunion
A few days have passed since Hiccup woke up after the battle of Dragon Island. Everything on Berk has returned to normal, with the addition that dragons now roam freely on the island and live with the Vikings. For Bright and Luna, they were happy that Stoick changed his mind about dragons after seeing the heroics of his son on Dragon Island and defeating the Monster.
However, Bright felt like something in him was missing. He didn't know what it could be, but he knew he missed his family. Luna and Toothless noticed it with his expression that he had one day.
"Is there something wrong, Bright?" Toothless asked, walking up with Hiccup behind him.
"Bright?" Hiccup added in the question.
"It's just…" Bright sighed, sitting on the cliff-side of Berk, eyes lowered from the view. "I miss my family."
Luna realized it, nuzzling her brother gently. "It's all right, brother. I miss them, too."
"No, not them," Bright corrected. "Someone else."
Luna pulled back, blinking surprisingly.
"Who?" Toothless asked curiously.
"Yeah, Bright, who could you be missing?" Luna wondered. "We both know that Mom and Dad are worried about us, so they're on their way here to Berk with the Alpha."
Toothless looked at her. "There's an Alpha from the Nest coming here?" He then realized who it could be.
"The Alpha is named Scales," Luna explained. "He is caring to all who are in his home. I wonder why he's coming with our parents, though."
"What's up?" Hiccup asked. "Why are you three having your private talk?" He was still not used to Bright talking with the dragons, but since the boy was raised amongst them, he let it aside.
"Sorry, Hicc," Bright sighed. "It's just that the Alpha of mine and Luna's nest are coming with our parents."
Hiccup took the moment to let the words sink in. "Your Alpha is coming here?!" he gasped in shock. "What would the others think if their dragons suddenly went away from them?"
"Relax," Bright chuckled. "Alpha Scales isn't like that. He's kind, caring, gentle, and the best of his traits is that he respects all dragons—even if they're with humans."
"Huh," Hiccup hummed, crossing his arms. "That's nice to hear. But what about my dad? Should we tell him?"
"Probably," Bright nodded. He stood and walked with Hiccup back into the village. There were a couple of Vikings working on a few items, with the Deadly Nadders and Gronckles assisting them in finding the right item and helping them build.
Some of the other dragons were lounging around on the rooftops, while the owners of the houses were calling up to the dragons to get them down.
Soon, the group of friends made their way to Stoick the Vast, who was with Gobber near the blacksmith stall, while Gobber was hammering on something.
"Oh, Hiccup, Bright," Stoick acknowledged them with a smile. "What brings you two here?"
"Dad, there is something Bright wants to tell you," Hiccup said.
Bright stepped forth. "Chief, the Alpha of my dragon nest is coming to Berk with my parents."
"Oh?" Stoick looked at him. "Your parents are dragons, correct?"
"Yes," Bright nodded.
"Then we should give them a hearty welcome!" Gobber stated. "Since they're your family and all, Bright, and you're one of us, what could go wrong with giving them a hefty greeting?"
"Well, unless it's with weapons, it could go the wrong way," Bright joked, looking at the stack of weapons in the wagon next to Gobber.
"Oh, my bad," Gobber realized, pulling the wagon away.
"So, what's with the downed look, Bright?" Stoick asked.
"Huh?"
"Your expression—something tells me everything's not alright with you," Stoick finished.
"I noticed it too," Gobber stated, returning to them.
Bright blinked, shaking his head dismissively. "Sorry, I've not been feeling well lately."
"Lies," Stoick said knowingly. "I know your lies too well now, Bright. Something's wrong. Go on, tell me."
Bright sighed, as Hiccup was with Toothless to some other place. "Lately, I've been feeling like I'm missing an important part inside me," he told Stoick.
"What part?" Stoick smiled gently.
"Like…I am missing someone who has always been there for me, yet I don't know what it could be."
Stoick looked up, closing his eyes for a moment, then glanced back to Bright. "I know how it feels."
"You do?"
"I've been missing someone who had always been by my side, even when Hiccup was born," Stoick explained. "To tell you the truth, I miss the person with all my heart. But you shouldn't let it get to your head. It could destroy your inner peace."
Bright looked down to the ground while pondering.
Stoick placed a hand on his shoulder. "Just let it go for now. That's my advice for you. When you feel like you need to embrace the sense of loss, don't. It will lead you down the wrong path."
"I see," Bright said at last after a pause. "Thanks, chief. I'll remember your words."
"Good," Stoick smiled, pleased. He then turned to Gobber. "I will go and see what needs to be checked in the village."
"Sure," Gobber nodded. "Have fun!"
Stoick walked off.
Bright walked away with Luna, who was by his side. "You know who I miss, don't you, sis?"
"Beats me," she admitted, shrugging. "I don't know who you miss in reality, brother."
Bright sighed, and decided to join the Riders for their daily routine. Once he arrived at their place in the village, they noticed him and waved excitedly to him.
"Bright, there you are!" Astrid called.
"We were wondering where you've been," Fishlegs added.
"I've been someplace," Bright answered.
"Where? At my place?" Tuffnut asked, eyeing him dangerously.
"Why would he need to be at your place?" Ruffnut asked her twin brother.
"What? He seemed to be the type of guy who could be a thief," Tuffnut shrugged.
"A thief…yeah, right," Ruffnut rolled her eyes. "That could be us, though."
"Ohh…twin thieves," Tuffnut realized. "That could work."
"Guys, something needs to be done for the day," Hiccup started.
"Well, what do you suggest?" Snotlout asked. "Cause I and Hookfang are surely not going to miss any of it."
"Is it about destroying the village? Or someplace else?" Ruffnut asked. Tuffnut put in and they began arguing again.
"No," Hiccup shook his head. "We're most likely going to wait until Bright's parents are here."
"Who could they be?" Astrid wondered curiously.
"Light Furies."
The teens looked at Bright.
"What? I've been adopted by them," Bright shrugged, as if it was 'no big deal'.
"Oh," they realized.
"So, when will they arrive?" Hiccup asked his friend.
"Probably in a few hours, if not a day," Bright answered.
"Then that gives us time to prepare our welcome greeting," Hiccup smiled.
Luna sat with Toothless, who had unknowingly draped a wing over her. She smiled warmly at him, until he realized his move and retreated his wing to his body and flushed in embarrassment.
"I think Toothless loves her, Bright," Astrid said.
"They've always been lovers," Bright teased.
Luna eyed him dangerously and pointed with a claw. "Careful, Bright. You wouldn't want to face my wrath, do you?"
"Oh, what's the matter, sis? Can't handle a little teasing?" Bright asked in dragon tongue.
Luna growled at him.
Meatlug, Fishlegs's Gronckle, glanced nervously between the siblings.
"For the record, Bright, can you not tease me?"
"What? That you absolutely LOVE Toothless with all your heart?" Bright smirked.
That did it. Luna sprung into action, tackling Bright, startling the Riders and their dragons. Luna held Bright's hands with her forepaws and snarled.
"Whoa!" Tuffnut breathed. "Didn't see that coming."
"Me neither," Ruffnut added in shock.
"Luna, stop!" Toothless tried speaking to her. "He didn't mean it!"
"He did mean it!" she growled back, glaring at Bright. "You've been feeling down, Bright. A lot lately. Why? Why don't you just tell us?"
"Oh, I did," Bright's eyes turned into a saddened look.
Luna saw it and stepped away from him, sitting on the ground. "You didn't," she realized.
"What's wrong, Bright?" Astrid asked, coming up to the boy. "You look sad."
"Oh, thank you for stating the obvious, captain," Bright rolled his eyes.
Soon, they saw three forms coming into shape in the distance. Luna's face turned into delight as she ran to the docks, with the Riders and dragons behind her. Bright didn't follow immediately, but soon sighed and ran to catch up with his friends.
At the docks, a group of Vikings were looking into the sky as three Light Furies flew down to land. Murmuring arose from the human crowd, while Stoick silenced them with a hand before he stepped forth.
"Welcome to Berk, Light Furies," he started. "We've been waiting."
"Oh, really?" the female Light Fury raised a brow. Her words were not understood by the humans, who only whispered between themselves.
Luna quickly hopped over the crowd and landed in front of the three dragons. "Mom, Dad, Alpha Scales!" She nuzzled them one at a time, and they nuzzled back.
"You look healthy, dear Luna," the male Light Fury, Flashwing, stated. "Where's Bright?"
"Right here."
They looked at the human who came through the crowd and walked over to them. Bright hugged his dragon parents, and they hugged back.
"Wow, would you look at that?" A Viking whispered. "Bright's so friendly to them."
Stoick smiled, walking up to the family. "Bright, would you introduce us?" he asked gently.
Bright broke his mother's embrace and nodded to the chief. "Sure." He turned to the crowd. "Everyone, I'd like for you to meet my family. The Alpha from our nest is here, too."
Scales, the Light Fury with the green eyes, stepped forth. His rumbling was met with astonishment. "Greetings, humans of Berk. I hope you've been treating our hatchling well."
Bright relayed the words to Stoick, whose smile remained.
"Indeed we have, Alpha Scales," Stoick said. "As you can see, our village has thrived ever since Bright here has arrived at our home."
Scales looked at the chief. "I've heard you had a war with our kin. Is that true?"
A relay from Bright caused a sigh to escape Stoick. "I'm afraid so we had. But the war is long over by now. Dragons freely roam the island, and we're forever grateful for the efforts of a group of Riders who stopped our meaningless fight."
Scales looked at Bright, who nodded in confirmation. "I see," Scales rumbled. "Then where are these Riders of yours?"
Stoick knew from the expression of the Alpha that he wished to see his son. "Hiccup, come here, son!" he called out.
Hiccup pushed through the crowd with Toothless right behind him. Scales eyed them curiously. "I'm here, dad," the boy said, and then blinked. "So everything Bright said was…?"
"True, yes," Stoick nodded before Bright could answer. "These dragons are his family. They are…"
"Their names are Scales, Flashwing and Lightwing," Bright quickly introduced.
"Thank you," Stoick thanked him.
Hiccup looked at Flashwing who had his eyes on him in curiosity, as if judging him from his appearance.
Toothless stepped forth. "Hello. I'm pleased to meet the family of Luna."
"And who is this Night Fury?" Lightwing asked.
"Luna's mate," Bright chuckled. Lightwing widened her eyes.
"Bright, stop it!" Luna warned.
"It's fine, dear. I know he didn't mean it," Lightwing reassured. "So, Night Fury—"
"Toothless."
"That's your name?" Lightwing raised a brow.
Toothless nodded.
"Strange name for a Night Fury…" Flashwing commented.
"Well, not so strange for a human named Bright," Toothless stated.
"Touché," Flashwing laughed.
"What are they speaking?" A Viking asked from the crowd to the chief.
Stoick shrugged, unsure. "Everyone," he called out, "let's gather at the Great Hall. We shall make sure that these Light Furies are welcomed with open arms." He heard cheering from the Vikings as he turned to Bright, "Have a good time with them." His smile grew on his face while Bright nodded in thanks before the chief turned around and walked off with the crowd from the docks.
